Fall 2023 Season Brochure

FALL 2023 SEASON

We acknowledge and pay respect to Lenape people past, present, and coming in the future. We acknowledge and offer deep gratitude to Lenapehoking where our theater sits - the land, the waters of the Lenape homeland.

Writing this note before the launch of yet another season, we pause to think about the role New York Live Arts plays in our performing arts ecosystem with its disappearing festivals, residencies, funding, and the concurrent birth of big new venues. It is hard to tell the direction of the current from within. Perhaps it is best for our organization to be an organic entity with interconnected and breathing parts in perpetual evolution. We feel very grateful to the people - co-workers, board members, supporters, artists, collaborators, partners, producers, peers, audience members — that collectively make meaning of what we do. We continue to support the creation of new work by artists at all stages of their careers, some of which will have their premiere in the Spring. This Fall, we are honored to partner with Dance Reflections by Van Cleef and Arpels, DIA, Performa, Villa Albertine and Crossing the Line/FIAF to present genre bending works by Smaïl Kanouté, Gisèle Vienne, Dorothée Munyaneza and Juni One Set. The works explore themes of violence, love, community, resilience, transformation, through the imagination, vision, craft and artistry of an intergenerational group of artists. And, if you missed the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company’s recent sold out run of Curriculum II, you will have another opportunity to catch it in October.

See you at New York Live Arts.

Welcome!

Conceived and directed by Jones and choreographed by Jones with Janet Wong and the Company, the poetic quilt - sewn of text, lecture as narration, live song, sound and visual installation, and the Company’s distinctive movement lexicon - applies ideas from great minds Achille Mbembe, Louis Chude-Sokei, and Sylvia Wynter. SMAÏL KANOUTÉ

Never Twenty One

SEP 27, 730PM

Co-presented with French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF)’s Crossing the Line Festival and Villa Albertine, as part of the Albertine Dance Season

OFF-SITE @ Florence Gould Hall

55 East 59th Street, NY, NY

French-Malian choreographer/dancer Smaïl Kanouté’s Never Twenty One makes its U.S. premiere in a FIAF co-presentation with New York Live Arts and Villa Albertine. Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement’s #Never21 hashtag, this deeply resonant piece pays tribute to young people of color who have lost their lives to gun violence all over the world before reaching the age of 21. The dancers’ intense movement draws on contemporary and intuitive dance, krump, popping, and baile funk in recounting the stories of many broken lives.

GIS È LE VIENNE

L’Étang

OCT 21 & 23, 730PM

OCT 22, 4PM

Presented with Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels Festival

An adaptation of an early work by the Swiss writer Robert Walser, L’Étang reveals an intricate tale of filial love. It is the story of a boy who feels unloved by his mother and, at the lowest point of his despair, pretends to commit suicide in order to see her love for him one last time. The two actresses, Adèle Haenel and Julie Shanahan, embody one and two characters respectively while lending their voices to the others. Several levels of perception of reality and temporality, interiority and exteriority coexist. In examining the conventions of the theater and the family, L’Étang notably raises the question of the shared representation of reality, the social norm, and what we see.

JUNI ONE SET

Boy mother / faceless bloom

NOV 16-18, 730PM

Presented with Dia Art Foundation as part of Performa Biennial 2023

Dia and New York Live Arts present the New York premiere of Boy mother / faceless bloom, a stage work by Juni One Set, a collaboration of Senga Nengudi, eddy kwon, and Haruko Crow Nishimura & Joshua Kohl of Degenerate Art Ensemble. The work is presented in conjunction with the long-term exhibition of Nengudi’s work on view at Dia Beacon, as part of Performa Biennial 2023.

Threading mythology and autobiography, while drawing from the diverse lineages of queer, anti-colonial, and care-based artistic practices, Boy mother / faceless bloom is an interdisciplinary performance work. Dance, music, poetry, ritual, and sculptural installation converge to tell a story of transformation, transgression, and the formation of new trancestral lines.

2023-2024 RANDJELOVIĆ/STRYKER RESIDENT COMMISSIONED ARTIST

Miguel Gutierrez is a choreographer, composer, performer, singer, writer, educator, podcaster, visual artist, and arts advocate who has been based in Lenapehoking/Brooklyn for twenty five years. His work creates empathetic and irreverent spaces outside of traditional discourse – he believes in an approach to art making that is fierce, fragile, empathetic, political, and poetic.

The Randjelović/Stryker Resident Commissioned Artist program is one of the nation’s most comprehensive mid-career choreographer awards, providing two years of full-time salary, health benefits, studio time, a major commission of a new work to premiere at New York Live Arts, and artistic, administrative and production support. The goal of the residency is for Live Arts to be in collaboration with the artist in the creation of a work that may not have been possible without this kind of support, as well as building a structure towards a sustainable career that lasts beyond the residency.

The Randjelović/Stryker Resident Commissioned Artist Program is made possible with lead funding from Mellon Foundation and has been named for lead donors Jon Stryker and New York Live Arts board Vice-chair Slobodan Randjelović.
