LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
That most wonderful time of year has arrivedPAWLIDAY!!! And with that comes celebrations, comradery, and love! Yes, the PAWliday season is all about togetherness, bonding with your family (especially your furrever one) and creating memories. And we could not be more excited to be a part of your preparation for a legendary 2024 PAWliday!
It is so hard to believe that the new version of Pet Lifestyles Magazine is a year old. Since that first new issue featuring Best Friends Animal Society CEO Julie Castle on the cover, we have changed the way we look at PLM and what each issue really means. That November 2023 issue was the very first Adoption Edition, and it was combined with PAWliday. This year, because there is so much happening in the rescue and advocacy communities, we felt separating Adoption and PAWliday would serve our readers, and the community, far better. And it’s going to remain that way go-forward!
Inside this PAWliday Edition, we put together the best content to help you through the season with your furrever one. Whether it is tips and tricks to get you through holiday meals or at-home parties or just general days with your furry friends; gifts for the four legged (and sometimes three-legged) ones as well as the passionate pet parent or animal advocate in your life; or information about adoption, the PAWliday Edition is packed with pawesome stories.
And in 2025, every issue of Pet Lifestyles Magazine is being lovingly dedicated to our packmates at Best Friends Animal Society and their “No-Kill Nation” goal! As such I want to encourage each and every one of you to please adopt, foster, volunteer and/or donate today with Best Friends. Only together can we make a difference and “Save Them All.” To learn more, please visit www.bestfriends.org.
Have a very Happy, Safe and Healthy PAWliday season!
Stay pawesome,

Daniel Henney recalls getting a constant nudge in his stomach that kept telling him he is being called to do “something meaningful” but he couldn’t figure out what that was until fate answered the question for him. Henney, best known for his roles on Criminal Minds, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, Big Hero 6, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine was filming a TV show in Seoul, when the actor learned how restaurants were offering dog meat on the menu. “I was shocked,” Henney tells Pet Lifestyles Magazine, “and it affected me in so many ways, I cannot describe.” It was at that moment Henney knew what he was destined to do but, he just needed to find the right partner to make it happen. As luck would have it, The Human Society International (HSI) was looking to collaborate with a well-known public figure in that region. Since Henney was an A-lister in Korea who also spoke the language, a partnership was born.
Henney immersed himself in this cause and learned about why this practice is still occurring in the 21st century. “You have to go back and re-read history,” Henney tells PLM, “Eating dog meat was born from a time of the war when people were facing famine and occupation in the country, and this is how they fed their people. Unfortunately, no one has done away with it so it’s still happening today.” In the ten years the actor has been collaborating with HSI to ban this practice, Henney tells PLM, “I have seen big changes taking place such as transforming these meat farms into blueberry farms and gaining support from the younger generation.”
SPREADING THE MESSAGE
Another way Henney is spreading this message to a larger audience, is by hosting the annual To the Rescue! gala supporting the animal protection work of Humane Society International and the Humane Society of the United States at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City which took place on November 1st with a special appearance by actress Amy Sedaris. This year’s event shined a spotlight on the work Humane Society International and the Humane Society of the United States is doing to end the dog and cat meat trades in various parts of the world, including in South Korea, China, Indonesia, India and Vietnam. Henney’s determination to use his celebrity powers until this matter is fully eradicated resulted in HSI raising over two million dollars at this event!
A LIFELONG DOG PARENT
Henney has not only rescued dogs from these meat farms, but he has also been a dog owner since he was a little boy. “I grew up in a small town in Michigan of 900 people.” Henney tells PLM, “We were the only Asian people so there were moments when I felt like an outsider. My dogs were my only source of friendship.” Henney’s love for dogs continued to grow as he became an adult, which is why it was important for him to be surrounded by his four-legged besties when he was not portraying makebelieve characters on a movie/television set.
Cue in Roscoe and Juliette, two Golden Retrievers Henney and his wife adopted from two different meat farms. “Rosco was the sweetest boy,” Henney shares, “He was very open and accepting to Julie, as we call her, when we decided to add her to the family. Roscoe,” Henney goes onto say, “was stuck to her, which was very good for Julie as she did not know how to bond because she was tied and locked in a steel crate and would only be allowed to come out for breeding for puppies.” Although Henney gets chocked-up revealing the cruelty Julie experienced, he breaks out in laughter when he adds, “After Roscoe met her, he loved to jump on her, hug her, lick her, sleep on her, he taught her how to shake, ask for food and he was a great big brother.” Although Roscoe passed away in September 2024, Henney says Julie is thriving despite her limitations to develop and grow properly because of the abuse she endured when she was a puppy.
Henney who spends six months out of the year shooting his latest fantasy series, Wheel of Time in the Czech Republic tells PLM, “I make sure to Facetime my wife and dogs every day and watch videos of all their funny shenanigans. I also have a house on Lake Michigan where Julie and I go for walks on the trails, the dunes and her favorite, play catch the ball in the forest.”
JENNIFER ESPOSITO
DOGS ARE MORE THAN MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY
By Ilyssa Panitz
Actress Jennifer Esposito is best known for her roles as a no-nonsense Detective on Blue Bloods, NCIS, and Law & Order: SVU. But these days, she can be found behind the camera for her latest project, Fresh Kills, a film she headlines, wrote and directed for Amazon Prime and Apple TV.
“When I wasn’t able to find satisfying roles,” Esposito tells our sister magazine, Pet Lifestyle Magazine, “It motivated me to create a script and pitch it to Hollywood.” Esposito finds the work fulfilling, and she credits her dogs with ingraining a permanent smile on her face and bringing laughter into her New York home.
In this interview, Esposito reveals why her dogs are in a league of their own and how they pulled this Hollywood star out of tough times when no one else could.
Tell us more about how being a dog Mom. I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have dogs. Dogs are the best things on earth. I would take dogs over anybody, and my husband would agree.
How long have you been a dog Mom?
I begged my mom when I was a kid to get a dog, and she did. When I was on my own at 18, I got a Golden Retriever named Frankie Beans, who I describe as the one and only love of my life. I had him for 17 years, and he was with me through everything. When Frankie Beans got sick, I found a 13-pound Goldendoodle named Goose, and now I have him and a Sheepadoodle named Gus, who is 85 pounds and a sweetheart.
How did you decide what breed was right for you?
I recommend you do your research before getting a dog. The only time I didn’t do much research was when I got my Sheepadoodle. Here is something people should know: there is a herding aspect to them, at least with Gus there is, because he tries to herd the squirrels in the yard, and when they don’t come to him, he gets frustrated. It is hilarious to watch.
What other vital considerations should be on our radar?
People must understand dogs are more than cute members of the family. You must understand what the dog is about, what the dog needs, and how a dog fits into your life because having a dog is a responsibility and obligation. Yes, it will bring you so much joy, but it is not a decision you should make on a whim.
What are some of the significant differences with all your dogs?
Goose is my protector. He may be only 13 pounds, but if anyone comes near me, it’s like he’s thinking, “Don’t even think about it!” Goose likes to have his bed underneath mine. We call it his apartment. He loves being cozy underneath there. He is also extremely intuitive. If I shed a tear in silence, he senses it, immediately jumps up on my bed and lays on my chest. He is the sweetest little man.
What do you like to do with your dogs when you are not on a television set?
We like to play in the yard, be in nature, or go for a long walk on the beach. They love to run, catch sticks and stroll on our favorite hiking trail. When they sense I want to go to the park or beach, they start running around the house and get all excited.
Dogs are reportedly known to help lower stress. Do you agree? I have had a lot of stress over the years and Frankie Beans was there. At one point in my life, I got sick with Celiac Disease, and it was Frankie Beans who would sit with me on the floor when I was in so much pain. He never left my side or walked to the door to signal he needed to go outside. He just stayed with me, and I credit that dog with saving my life. Goose is like that too, which is why I get so much joy from my animals.
Fresh Kills starring Jennifer Esposito and Sopranos alum Annabella Sciorra is now airing on Amazon Prime and Apple TV.
JOHN O’HURLEY
IT’S A DOGGIE, DOG WORLD FOR THIS ACTOR
By Ilyssa Panitz
For over 23 years, John O’Hurley has spent his Thanksgiving in the doghouse, and he wouldn’t have it any other way. Luckily for him, it’s all part of a day’s work and a job he loves discussing, especially in this exclusive interview with our sister magazine, Pet Lifestyles Magazine. O’Hurley, best known for his role as John Peterman in the NBC series Seinfeld and Dancing with the Stars, has been co-hosting The National Dog Show alongside David Frei, the dean of dog show commentators, since The National Dog Show premiered on the Peacock Network in 2002, following the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
O’Hurley, who has had dogs since he was four years old, tells us, “The National Dog Show is a family-oriented program that appeals to everyone. Okay, maybe not cats, but it’s in a wonderful slot. After the Parade and before football. So, as I jokingly say, “Dogs until two.”
As of 2023, over 25 million people reportedly watched The National Dog Show, where 2,000 dogs representing 205 recognized breeds by the American Kennel Club competed for Best of Breed, First in Group, and the coveted title of Best in Show.
PREPARATION IS KEY
For his part, O’Hurley makes it his business to school himself on the topic of dogs by conducting extensive research and studying his notes before the cameras start rolling. “I have to do my homework,” O’Hurley tells us, “Because each of the dogs is distinct, they have different functions, they have historical experiences, and the judges base their decisions on written specifications I need to talk about and describe to our audience.”
How are the contestants chosen from a pool of millions? Regarding the audition process, a seasoned expert panel views the applicants vying for a spot. O’Hurley says, “There are thousands of dog shows across the country that are AKC certified and where people are constantly showing their dogs. To be a considered candidate on The National Dog Show,” O’Hurley says, “Dogs must win their breed category.”
There are seven categories: Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding. You can learn more about each by visiting The National Dog Show’s website and clicking “The Seven Groups” under Event/Vendor Info. To find which specific group your dog falls under, look for the “Meet the Breeds” tab, where you will see a complete list identifying each breed.
THE SHOW MUST GO ON
Like any television series or Hollywood movie set, a lot goes on behind the scenes. At The National Dog Show, for example, dogs take part in an all-day priming process because each dog must be well groomed. The dogs also need a proper haircut since their overall appearance is part of their score. When picking a winner, O’Hurley explains, “It is not about the cutest dog but what is the perfect representation of what that breed should be.”
Away from the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Philadelphia, where the show takes place and more than 20,000 people attend every year, O’Hurley likes to be at home playing with his two rescues, Charlotte and Mia. They keep him active all day long because, as he puts it, “they have a little bit of terrier in them.”

A YEAR OF BEST FRIENDS ANIMAL SOCIETY
FOCUSING ON THE BEST CHANCE WE HAVE TO “SAVE THEM ALL”
By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
In 2016, Julie Castle, CEO of Best Friends Animal Society, drew a line in the sand by calling for The United States of America to become a No-Kill Nation in 2025. And while we are well on our way to achieving this lofty goal, we aren’t there yet. As such, Pet Lifestyles Magazine is dedicating our four issues in 2025 to Best Friends Animal Society, their mission and goal.
In every issue next year, we will feature a special section dedicated to Best Friends Animal Society. Here you will find information about Best Friends’ programs, their community outreach, updates on their No-Kill Nation goal and more. And just so that you understand what the term “no-kill” means, according to Best Friends Animal Society: For a shelter to achieve what is considered no-kill, 90% of the cats and dogs coming into the shelter must be saved. Typically, no more than 10% of dogs and cats entering shelters are suffering from irreparable medical or behavioral issues that compromise their quality of life and prevent them from being rehomed, so that’s how Best Friends Animal Society arrived at the 90% benchmark.
Best Friends Animal Society has six lifesaving centers in various markets across the country, including the legendary Best Friends Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. Throughout 2025, we will talk about each of the Lifesaving Centers as well as the many programs and benefits the Sanctuary provides the animal rescue and advocacy communities. You will also learn about various local animal welfare organizations that Best Friends works with as part of the Best Friends Network to achieve this success. As Best Friends’ website so eloquently states it, “While the Sanctuary remains the heart and soul of Best Friends, we now have lifesaving centers and programs in Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, New York City, Houston, Northwest Arkansas and other areas. In addition, through our national network of partners, lifesaving tactics are being implemented in shelters and rescue groups across the country.”
The Best Friends Network is comprised of more than 5,000 shelters, rescue groups, and support organizations, all working to achieve the No-Kill Nation goal. And while animal advocacy and rescue networks are not new, the Best Friends Network has literally redefined what this kind of endeavor can achieve. From offering shared resources to helping increase exposure for adoptables to new audiences and everything in between, the Best Friends Network has become the global gold standard in animal welfare consortia.
In animal advocacy and rescue, it is the day-to-day staff and volunteers that do the heavy lifting and dedicate so much to saving our furrever ones. In each issue, we will also profile Best Friends Animal Society staff and volunteers. Learn about why and how they got involved in rescue, how they ended up working with Best Friends and what they’re doing to make a difference in the lives of our furrever ones.
In each issue, we will also focus on how you can help Best Friends Animal Society achieve the landmark goal that Julie Castle set in 2016. From volunteering to fostering to adopting and donating, there are countless ways you can help make a difference in the lives of a furrever one.
Lastly, we will talk about the many partners involved in Best Friends Animal Society’s programming. From movie studios to consumer brands to publishers, Best Friends leverages their relationships with some of the biggest and best companies in the country to help achieve their goals. By partnering with a movie studio, as they have done many times, Best Friends is able to effectively message to a film’s audience the need for adoption, fostering, volunteering and donating. That translates into millions of more Americans seeing the need for these beautiful animals to be helped.
And just so we are being 100% transparent - Pet Lifestyles Magazine is not paid by Best Friends Animal Society to fill 2025’s editions with their messaging, programs and information. We are doing this because it is our duty to help the community. It is part of our DNA. Best Friends Animal Society are our packmates. And they are the best chance we have to, as Best Friends always puts it so pawfectly, “Save Them All.”
TIPS & TRICKS
TO KEEP YOUR PET SAFE DURING HOME ENTERTAINING
By Kate Perry
That wonderful time of year is upon us with homes filled with laughter, joy and the pitter patter of little paws running amok. Every holiday season, I get asked for advice on how to keep pets entertained, or how to keep them well-behaved, as people have family and friend gatherings throughout the Holiday Season.
Typically, cats leave most house guests alone and are fairly wellbehaved during the holidays. That is unless you are making a traditional Italian Christmas dinner, in which case when you start to make the Feast of the Seven Fishes, make sure to keep any felines out of the kitchen or you may find one or two less servings will be available for your guests! But, when it comes to canines, it can be tricky depending on the size of your home, how many guests you have over, or how well-behaved those guests are!
• Make sure you contain your pooch in a safe area while unattended, either in a crate, playpen, or gated-off area. Supply safe toys and chew bones to keep them distracted. My recommendations include: Busy Buddy Twist and Treat or 3” hollow, sterilized bones, filled with yummy treats (cream cheese, peanut butter, cottage cheese, yogurt). We also recommend stuff-less skinny, soft toys.
• For cats, if you have a concern about them interacting with your guests, then contain them in a bedroom where they will be safe and comfortable. As long as it is only for a couple of hours at most, you won’t even have to move their litter box!
• If your dog is a social butterfly, make sure that you are keeping a close watch on them. Let them enjoy brief moments of interaction and then put them in a safe area so that you too can enjoy the festivities.
• Decorations, plants and Christmas trees are beautiful and make the home smell welcoming, but they are not necessarily pet-friendly. Here are some issues to look out for:
o Tree ornaments, tinsel, candles, dreidels, wrapping paper and ribbons - Dangers: choking, burns, intestinal blockage, stomach infections. Symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, pain, fever.
o Mistletoe, Poinsettia, Xmas tree pine needles, holly - Dangers: gastric distress, mouth irritation/ allergies and death. Symptoms: drooling, stomach pain, shock, difficulty breathing, vomiting.
o Cords & Lights - Dangers: electric shock, death, burns. Symptoms: abnormal breathing and heartbeat, loss of consciousness.
o Food & Drinks - When it comes to food and drinks, watch out for tainted water (someone always “spills” into Fido’s water bowl), chocolate (especially dark chocolate), fat trimmings, nuts (especially macadamia, almonds, walnuts, pistachios). You also want to be mindful of sap in Christmas tree water, and the satin stand cover. Dangers: Pancreatitis with fatty foods. Gastric and respiratory distress from sap water can also cause seizures, coma. Symptoms: Vomiting, tremors, difficulty in breathing.
o Alcohol - If you are serving alcohol, or have guests that are partaking in recreational marijuana, be mindful of where your pets are. While we may all enjoy imbibing, it can be lethal to pets, especially in larger quantities.
When it comes to Christmas day, or throughout Hanukah, remember that wrapping paper can act as prey to our furrever friends. For cats particularly, they love reflective wrapping paper. For dogs, any kind of wrapping paper can be considered their nemesis of the moment! The best method to avoid any issues is to ball up the paper and then toss it down a hallway or across the room for your pets to play with for a moment...but only a moment as they can swallow the paper and those dyes can make them sick. This allows them momentary play to satisfy their prey drive.
Lastly, many people think that pets are a wonderful gift for the season. Please do not purchase a puppy or kitten or “chick” for anyone. Often this results in disaster and a visit to the local animal shelter to surrender that animal. While the gift is intended as well-meaning, there are a lot of factors to consider. In this case, I would recommend a stuffed toy cat or dog.
HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS
By John Dake
As the Holiday Season arrives, so do new challenges for pet parents, particularly new ones. With adoption levels lower this season than in prior years, we wanted to spend some time helping those who may be new to being a pet parent during the busiest time of year for all of us. Especially for delicious holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas where pitfalls come in larger volumes and potential dangers are around every corner for the novice pet parent.
THANKSGIVING:
The most popular holiday for family gatherings is Thanksgiving. This celebration often involves decadent tables full of tasty treats as well as travel to your family or hosting visiting guests in your home.
• Remember that turkey in moderation is fine for most pets, but your pet largely eats the same diet for every meal every day and may have a negative reaction to new treats. If you want your pet to enjoy in the festivities of the meal, please restrict access to a limited amount of lean protein if they can tolerate that. Avoid any skin or bones that can cause GI obstruction or pancreatitis.
• Not every pet is welcoming of new people in their home, so if your pet struggles with this, talk to your vet at least a week before the holiday to discuss how to manage this. Their recommendations may include medication to be given, so you need some time to obtain the medication and make sure it has the intended effects on your pet.
• If travel is in your plans, please make sure your pet is up to date on vaccines. You may also need sedatives, so ask your vet well in advance. Also, if your pet is on medication make sure you have plenty for the duration of the trip. Finally, if travel is not inclusive of your pet, make sure you have a trusted pet sitter or day care facility lined up. This is a busy time of year in which case you may run into limited availability!
CHRISTMAS AND HANNUKAH:
Between wrapping paper, tinsel on the trees and Holly plants, a decorated home is beautiful, but it can also be lethal to a pet.
• Dogs love to chase crumpled wrapping paper. However, many of these papers (usually the cheaper versions that come from China) contain chemicals that can be harmful to your pet. You can still throw the crumpled-up ball of Christmas joy down the hall for your dog to chase it, but make sure that he or she does not ingest it.
• Holly plants are lethal to dogs, and children. Specifically, the berries on these beautiful, seasonal plants are toxic. If you want to have them in your home, please make sure that they are out of reach of your dog, cat or child. Signs of toxicity include vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy, but it is safest to just not allow your pet access to these plants at all. Other toxic plants include Lilies and poinsettia; Lily toxicity can be fatal to cats and Poinsettia can cause irritation of the mouth, stomach and esophagus, so again, please prevent access for your pets.
• Tinsel is one of those things that families love to argue about. Many love them for their simple shine and ability to add accent to a Christmas tree. Then again, many hate them because they are messy and when the family dog eats them, their poop is often lined with silver-streaks. Tinsel is okay to use, like many things, but please use in moderation. Just be mindful that if your dog does ingest tinsel, you must monitor the dog’s defecation. If your dog is having trouble passing tinsel, and you see some hanging out of their rectum as they poop, please do not pull the tinsel string out. You can damage your dog’s rectum and intestines. Normally, a dog can express these kinds of things out with some effort (you will note the dog may “rock back and forth” on its hind legs a little as it tries to ease the tinsel out). However, if your dog is distressed and this is the reason, then you need to contact your vet or an animal ER (we recommend Veterinary Emergency Group). It is better to err on the side of caution here.
The same rules for Thanksgiving apply to other holidays this season in terms of treats, decadent foods and more. The last thing anyone wants to do is have their furrever friend not feeling well during the holidays. Not only does it add stress to an already stressful time, but it can also be heart-breaking to watch your pet being sick.
ADOPTING SPECIAL NEEDS CATS
WHY IT CAN BE SO REWARDING & SPECIAL
By Stephen Quandt
The holidays are a time of togetherness, and sometimes loneliness too, and they are a time for giving and receiving love. A time to help others and to spread love and joy. Oftentimes the best gift we can receive is the gift we give to others. Few things feel as good as helping others feel needed and loved, which reflects back to us.
In the spirit of giving I want to propose a special type of cat to adopt. This is a type of cat that is often called “special needs;” meaning they have only 3 legs, or they’re blind, deaf, or have some type of perceived “defect.” Before you say something like, “I don’t want a cat with a problem” please give me a chance and read on.
THEY’RE JUST THEMSELVES
Special needs cats don’t see themselves as special needs. They’re just themselves. And they don’t really have any special needs. The truth is that all of these cats, the wobbly cats, the three-legged cats, or the blind or deaf cats are so grateful to be loved that you both forget about any perceived shortcomings, and you realize they don’t have shortcomings at all. It’s one of the things to love about them, their ability to jump up on your sofa with only one rear leg, or the blind cat who navigates your home like a race car driver (Ok, almost like one!). And they’re amazing conversation starters! I promise you every single person who meets your special cat will ask, “So how do they get around with being x, y, or z?” And I also promise your answer will always be, “Just amazingly, thank you!”
Years ago, my husband and I went to adopt a companion for our senior cat after he lost his brother. We were going to do the right and smart thing and adopt an older cat for him. A colleague at the ASPCA where I volunteered at the time knew we were looking and she said, “We have a little blind-from-birth kitten who was found with her siblings in a box by the side of the Pelham Parkway in the Bronx, would you like to look at her?” What was I going to say, “No?” Absolutely not! One look and one plaintive meow from her and the next thing we knew we were bringing her home the day after Christmas and named her “Jenny” after our vet. This past October she celebrated her thirteenth birthday and our love for her is boundless. She is the smartest cat we have ever had and so good at mapping her world in her head that people often mistake her for sighted. What she has is sight without vision.
When I was doing adoptions at the ASPCA a couple came in and said they wanted a bonded pair of cats. I showed them several pairs and none were quite right. So I said, “I have one more pair I can show you.” As I opened the door to the kennel I explained that both of these cats were blind, that they loved each other, and we didn’t want to split them up.” For twenty minutes I talked about the joy of having a blind cat and all the incredible things Jenny has taught me. And as they started to close the kennel door the wife looked at me with tears in her eyes and she said, “We’ll take them both.”
ASSESSING THE BEHAVIOR
Just recently at the Animal Care Centers of NYC where I work in feline behavior, I was reassessing a cat named Panama with three legs who came to us fearful and upset. But in the time he spent with us, he had blossomed and I gave him a new assessment – a beginner” cat suitable for first time adopters just as this family walked in to look at him. They had come in looking to adopt a harder-to-adopt cat and I told them that even though he was now great behaviorally, he was still harder to adopt because of the recently amputated leg. They fell in love and took him home the same day.
I watch people walk past the sweetest of cats all the time, passing them by because of one perceived defect or another. Be the person who pauses for a second as you start to walk past that kennel. Turn your head back and look at them quietly looking at you, yearning for a better life. You can change their life and yours for the better, forever. Happy Holidays!
BORN IN A DOG FIGHTING RING
THE TRUE STORY OF ROLO EDMOND HILLMAN
By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
Once you start rescuing animals, it becomes an addiction you can’t, or rather don’t want to, shake. I started at the ripe old age of six. Yes, my first rescue came in the form of a wild kitten born in a cornfield in upstate New York who lived to be almost 21 years old and had the most incredible life. Fast forward some 30 years, and my wife and I found ourselves adopting Rolo, a PitLab puppy that was born to kill in a dog fight ring who became the epicenter of our lives.
I will never forget the phone call I received about one of the most reprehensible dog fighting rings ever busted in New York City history. An old friend of mine who was an undercover NYPD detective in the Bronx told me about this dog fighting ring he was investigating. I had met him working with the NYPD Animal Enforcement Unit which I advised from time to time. I was horrified by stories of the endless height of cages on top of cages filled with puppies being groomed to fight next to adult dogs that had clearly already been fighting. It was in this anonymous warehouse guarded by thugs carrying AR-15s; a place akin only to the third ring of hell for anyone with a heart, or soul.
At this warehouse, the endless cages of puppies were flanked by cages filled with “bait dogs.” Bait dogs are typically stolen off the street from unsuspecting pet parents who were inside either stores or coffee shops foolish enough to tie up their furrever one to a parking meter, tree box border or pole outside, unprotected. According to the ASPCA, over two million dogs are stolen every year with roughly 25% of them being used as bait dogs in major metro areas like New York.
When my friend told me about the dog fights that would go until 5am, and the hundreds upon hundreds of humans betting on dogs to kill, my stomach would churn. I remember tearing up thinking about how scared those poor puppies were that were being groomed to kill, let alone the dogs that used to live on Park Avenue, pampered, who now found themselves fighting for their lives against dogs at least twice their size. I remember thinking about how I would feel if our dog Snickers were stolen or used to fight (since she was 55 pounds of muscle in a Bull Mastiff-American Staffy Mix body). My heart would break with even the passing imagined image of another dog trying to kill our girl. Little did I know that is exactly what would happen just a year later. I will get back to that in a minute.
FREEDOM FROM THE RING
When my detective friend called me about a week later to tell me that they busted the fight ring, I was ecstatic. Hundreds of puppies and bait dogs had been seized from the ring by the NYPD and brought to Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC). That was, and still is, the protocol for law enforcement in New York as ACC is contracted by the NYC Department of Health and Human Services to manage all of New York City’s animals. That includes animals that are seized as evidence in a criminal or civil case. The only problem with this policy is that when you are caring for hundreds of animals related to a crime, none of them are allowed to be adopted out because they are classified as evidence in a court case. In other words, they are property under the custody of the NYPD and therefore have no rights.
A few days passed after the ring was busted, my wife texted me an intake photo of a puppy named Arnie who was in the ring being groomed. She wanted to see if we could foster him to ensure that he would get along with our girl, Snickers. We both noticed in the photos that he already had a couple of scars around his head. But the look on his face was full of fear, yet we could see the hope in this little boy’s eyes.
Knowing the law and the likelihood that it wouldn’t be possible, I still called ACC’s Executive Director, who I had been working with for a few years at that point, to see if I could get Arnie released into my custody. As she correctly reminded me, he was evidence in a criminal case. So, I told her to expect a call from the NYPD releasing her of responsibility and to transfer Arnie into the custody of a rescue that we work with so that we could foster him. Having as many friends at One Police Plaza as I have, I called downtown to see what I could do. I had to make the case that there were hundreds of dogs as evidence and that ACC is limited in their space, so releasing Arnie would be the humane thing to do. Thankfully a Captain agreed with me and instructed ACC to release him. ACC couldn’t believe this happened, as it never did before, and happily released Arnie to the rescue we were working with.
A couple of days later, we took Arnie in and became virtually instant foster failures. Kylie and I have always had a food name theme for the animals in our lives (ie –Snickers), so we scrambled to come up with a name because Arnie just wasn’t going to cut it. We landed on a childhood favorite candy of mine, Rolo! For the next year, Rolo and Snickers would play, roughhouse and put massive smiles on our faces the size of which I cannot even describe. Then one day, everything changed.
You see, when a dog (or any sentient being for that matter) is being groomed to kill from birth, it is not something that ever goes away completely. There will always be a trigger (ie – a smell, a sound, a sight, or a situation) they will react to. And one night around 2am, we found out the hard way that fight rings have a longer effect on animals than even we knew.
LASTING EFFECTS OF VIOLENCE IN THE RING
I was in LA for the Grammy Awards, staying at a friend’s house in the Hollywood Hills. We were watching a movie in his home theater when my phone started to frantically ring. I saw it was Kylie and knew it was after 2am in NY, so I picked up right away to hear sobbing and tears. Rolo had tried to kill Snickers.
Anger, sadness, confusion all took over my psyche. Kylie and a dear friend who lived in our building took Snickers and Rolo to the emergency vet as they were both bleeding profusely, with Snickers taking the lion’s share of damage. I could not imagine losing her, let alone seeing another sunrise without having her in our lives. Snickers was our first pet together and the literal center of our lives. I could hear the fear in Kylie’s voice that our little girl was going to die, and so I started imagining the worst-case scenario for my family.
Thankfully both dogs were taken care of, though Snickers’ healing and recovery time took months. We knew we had to do something about Rolo, but first we needed to really understand what caused this to happen. How did he go from being our sweet little boy to turning into the spawn of Satan in a millisecond? We came to discover that Rolo started viewing me as the Alpha dog in the house, while Kylie was considered a resource for him. As I had been gone for a week at that point, and Kylie was giving a treat to Snickers at the time, he snapped. He became enraged with jealousy. And he reacted in the primal way he was taught in that ring.
NEVER SURRENDER
So, the first question I am sure many of you have is, “when did you surrender Rolo?” We didn’t. Yes, I know to many that sounds crazy. Friends of mine would ask me when we were “getting rid of him.” My response was usually akin to this specific response I gave to one of my oldest friends, “Never. When are you getting rid of that child of yours who I had to call in a favor to get released from jail for assault?” Yes, you might think we are crazy, but we took responsibility for Rolo the day we adopted him. He, like Snickers, was our furrchild. There was no way we were ever going to let him go that way.
Unfortunately, resource guarding and jealousy can become a way of life for an animal. As such, twice more, again when I was travelling for an extended period of time, Rolo tried to end Snickers’ life. To be fair, he also began exhibiting some severe mood swings at that time and would randomly act out against another dog he usually happily played with. It became clear that the sweet boy that we still very much loved needed to be handled in a completely different way so as to ensure he and Snickers were safe, well cared for and that he was still able to enjoy his life.
A WORKABLE SOLUTION
So, we installed a gate system in our apartment so that neither he nor Snickers could ever physically come into contact again. Mind you these gates were slatted so that they could still see and smell each other or say hi through the slats. And they did every single day with their tails wagging. Granted, there were times that this gate system became cumbersome as we would use a holding area in our kitchen to “swap” the dogs out from their respective sides of the apartment. This way, they were still able to smell each other in different rooms, and they virtually lived together but were safely separated. And, yes, it was a bit painful for us to have to navigate this and maintain the gate system, but it was worth every minute spent doing so for our furrever ones. We were very careful to allot the same time for each dog in our living room where we spent most of our time. This way neither ever felt left out.
We also began muzzle training Rolo for his own protection because under the law, if a canine kills another animal, that canine is likely going to be euthanized by the city. And while Snickers and Rolo never cuddled again, that muzzle training did allow us to have them physically in the same space to sniff each other and say hi without the gates. However, those moments were fleeting to say the least and few and far between as we didn’t want to tempt fate again.
Believe it or not, Rolo actually lived a very happy life. We never gave up on him. We never surrendered to the endless comments from friends and concerned neighbors. Rolo was our furrbaby. Nothing in the world would ever change that. He spent hours a day being walked and played with as if nothing had ever happened. The only difference was the muzzle and the gates which he didn’t mind at all.
Some six years later, Snickers was diagnosed with lymphoma. On the day we decided to send her over the Rainbow Bridge after giving her every treat and steak imaginable, our vet came to the apartment to humanely euthanize Snickers in her favorite place, our bed, with Kylie and I cuddling her. She passed away peacefully, in our arms, taking a part of our hearts with her.
I will never forget the blood curdling screams that Rolo let out the minute that Snickers left us. As I sit here writing this, I am literally crying my eyes out thinking about those screams after her peaceful passing. It was as if Rolo was dying himself because his big sister was gone. At least that is how it sounded. We had been scheduled to move to another apartment a few days after Snickers’ passing, so we were thankful that Rolo wouldn’t have to be reminded every day that his big sister passed away in that apartment. He spent the last days there looking for his big sister. You could tell he missed her.
And for nine months, Rolo was the literal epicenter of our lives. All of our love and attention was dedicated to him. Then fate gave us one final twist; Rolo was diagnosed with a splenectal sarcoma. All of a sudden, one morning he stopped eating and didn’t want to walk. For the first time in eight years, Rolo wanted me to carry him. Sadly it was a literal death sentence even we could not justify fighting as it would have meant he would suffer between surgery that had less than a 10% chance of success and what we knew would be a virtually impossible recovery for him. So, that day, Kylie and I spent hours cuddling him on the floor of our vet’s office saying goodbye to our little prince. And right before it was time to send him over the Bridge, he looked at both of us as if to say, “It’s okay. My time has come. Thank you for being my Mom and Dad. I love you.” Even now, I can see that look on his face in my mind which provides little comfort as we miss him ever so much.
While this is both a beautiful and heartbreaking story, I want to make sure that you understand one very specific reality; dogs are animals and you can never know how they are going to behave when confronted with new or unique situations. Fight ring dogs are a dime a dozen in major metro areas. But please know that 99.9% of them will never be like Rolo was. They will have their own idiosyncrasies, their own wants and desires like any other dog for sure, and will likely never get into a fight. But when difficulty, adversity or even an attempt on another animal’s life happens, please remember that you took responsibility for the life of that dog. Remember that you adopted them to be a member of your family. That is how we looked at Rolo, and we don’t regret a single decision we made for him. Even Snickers on her last days made an effort to show Rolo more love than usual through those slats. It was beautiful to watch and heartbreaking at the same time.
Rolo spent his life as the spokesdog for our now former animal advocacy, Rock & Rawhide, helping thousands of dogs, cats, and rabbits get into loving and responsible homes. People in our neighborhood would go out of their way to say hello to him. And other dogs loved to play with him. Rolo Edmond Hillman had a pawesome life that most dogs can only dream of.
In Rolo’s honor, I humbly ask that you consider donating to Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) this holiday season, especially in light of the current population overflow crisis shelters across the country are experiencing.

THE GIFT OF GIVING
AN ALTERNATIVE TO TRADITIONAL PRESENTS
By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
That most wonderful time of year is upon us. No, I am not referring to Christmas Day. I am referring to that most wonderful time for charities when people across the globe give their hard-earned money to help with whatever the mission they are supporting. Aptly named Giving Tuesday, the largest single non-profit donation day of the year falls after right Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
Yes, it is hard to believe that over three billion dollars will be donated to help organizations across the globe on this single day; especially after seeing the endless images of people climbing all over each other, often getting into fights, to get to the best Black Friday deals. That is why this year we have decided to put together a list of organizations that we work with whom we know are responsible and will use your donations for their mission statements rather than at a high administrative cost.
You can either donate to these organizations for their Giving Tuesday initiatives, or you can make a donation in someone else’s name as a gift to give them this holiday season. Sometimes the best gift you can give someone during the holiday season is the gift of giving. This is especially true for those Secret Santa gifts we all have challenges shopping for!
GREY2KUSA
Formed in 2001, GREY2K USA Worldwide is the largest greyhound protection organization in the world. As a non-profit entity, we work to pass stronger greyhound protection laws and end the cruelty of dog racing on both national and international levels. We also promote the rescue and adoption of greyhounds across the globe. Greyhound racing is cruel and inhumane and should be prohibited. GREY2K USA was the first organization to successfully outlaw dog racing using the ballot initiative process. In November 2008, the citizens of Massachusetts chose compassion over cruelty and voted 56% - 44% to close Raynham and Wonderland Greyhound Parks. On November 6, 2018, Floridians voted 69% - 31% to phase out dog racing in the Sunshine State, ordering the closure of twelve historic tracks.
Since their formation, dozens of American dog tracks have closed for live racing, and dog racing is now illegal in 43 states. We also engage all around the globe to end the cruelty of commercial dog racing in the five other jurisdictions where it currently exists and have blocked the introduction of greyhound gambling to countries such as South Africa, Jamaica and the Philippines. When it comes to your pet, there is nothing more important than their health. Part of that is maintaining their schedule, ensuring a well-balanced diet and an exercise routine that keeps them both mentally and physically stimulated. And often their health, just like in humans, affects their behavior. If your dog starts acting out, or begins to shift their behavior, there may be an underlying health issue you need to look out for. But fear not as the most common explanation for these shifts is usually stress or anxiety. And there’s a no-nonsense solution for these issues thanks to Dr. Terry Fossum and her Dr. Fossum’s Pet Care line of products.
Dr. Fossum’s Pet Care products are designed to tackle a myriad of issues including cognitive decline, stress and anxiety, allergies and mobility decline. The founder, Dr. Terry Fossum, has been a celebrated, respected and beloved veterinarian for over 40 years. Dr. Fossum, and her partner, Dr. Richard (Dick) Gebhart, became vets because they love animals. Dr. Fossum’s husband is also a veterinarian and two of Dick’s sons and a daughter-in-law are veterinarians. In other words, it’s all in the family, so to speak. All of them have literally dedicated their entire lives to helping veterinarians, pets, and pet owners. According to Dr. Fossum, “As veterinarians, our mission is to provide science-based products for veterinarians, their clients, and the companion animals we all love.

All of them have literally dedicated their entire lives to helping veterinarians, pets, and pet owners. According to Dr. Fossum, “As veterinarians, our mission is to provide science-based products for veterinarians, their clients, and the companion animals we all love.”
And it shows in virtually everything Dr. Fossum’s Pet Care does. From the power of the products themselves to the design of the packaging to their powerful education program called Fossum’s University, this is a company that doesn’t just say they love animals, they show it in every way.
Fossum’s University is an online repository of educational videos and information that helps veterinarians and pet parents alike to better understand the efficacy of CBD. Dr. Fossum is a board-certified veterinary surgeon that for the past 25+ years has written the textbook on Small Animal Surgery. It is literally used by veterinarians all over the world. So why did Dr. Fossum create this education path for her brand? “What I have come to know is that many veterinarians lack any knowledge of CBD. Our goal is to change that by providing quality education to both veterinarians and pet owners,” said the award winning veterinarian.
So why did the doctor partners create this incredibly pawesome and powerful line of products? As is commensurate in the pet products space, it all started because of a dog. Dr. Fossum has a dog named “Dirty Dan.” He is a beautiful, sweet, 10-year-old Labrador. Dan was born with an elbow issue, causing him mobility problems as he got older.
His elbow condition started making him lame as he aged. Because he likes to swim and hike (and steal ball caps and shoes), Dr. Fossum started looking for alternative therapies to the common drugs that veterinarians would normally prescribe. She did this because she knew many of them had the potential to cause serious side effects. It was then that Doctors Fossum and Gebhart decided that they would produce the highest quality and most efficacious products possible. They wanted the line to contain products that pet owners and veterinarians could believe in. And what better way to prove that than have the original inspiration for the line continue on his regimen every day. “Dirty Dan” is given the product every day, and for the first time in years, he is no longer lame.
Before I continue, you should be aware that our Spokesdog, Brioreo, has been testing Dr. Fossum’s Rejuvenator line for over six months. Why? Over the summer, we noticed that Bri started exhibiting signs of heightened anxiety and stress at night due to a series of fireworks that had been set off at various events over the course of a couple of weeks in lower Manhattan. Rather than put her on a narcotic or relaxant of some type, we wanted to approach this issue in a more natural way. So, we started to explore CBD products and what dosages she needed given her weight. And because CBD products can be hit or miss depending on the brand, the dosage and more, I knew I had to go to the expert. So, I reached out to Dr. Fossum’s team to see if there was a product they recommended.
Sure enough, the Rejuvenator line tackled Bri’s challenges. Over the course of a couple of months after using the products, we began noticing Bri had a much calmer disposition when being walked outside. Even when a fireworks display was launched, Bri reacted, but nowhere near as much. And when we got home, she was acting her normal self which would not have been the case had she not been on Dr. Fossum’s Rejuvenator! In other words, it works and you need to check this line out for yourselves!
To celebrate PAWliday, our packmates at Dr. Fossum’s have issued a 25% discount on any product they sell for our readers!

Throughout the year, we receive hundreds upon hundreds of toys, clothing, accessories and personal care products for our spokesdog, Brioreo, to test out. For this year’s PAWliday, we thought you might want to see what made her list of favorite things as a guide for your furrever one’s gifts! In other words, the following products have Bri’s paw of approval!
Please remember that Bri is a high-energy, large breed dog who weighs 58 pounds. So we looked at Bri’s favorites that do come in various sizes for our smaller breed furrever ones!
JOLLY PETS
Bri loves to play fetch with the Mini Jolly Soccer all from Jolly Pets. We take all three balls, throwing them down our long hallway, one at a time. As Bri brings them back to us, we throw the next one. It is one of her all-time favorite games to play and the JollyFlex™ material allows for the ball to last longer. The balls can be punctured and will not deflate, keeping their shape.

RAHR DOG BALL
I have said it until I am blue in the face (pun intended) – this toy is way too well designed and constructed to be called a ball. I call it “The Rahr.” Bri loves to rough house play with this incredible toy, getting her best chew on. And yet nearly a year later, with heavy play virtually every single day, The Rahr only has surface scratches on it with no actual damage to the toy. It’s THE pawesomest (and likely last) “ball” you will ever buy for your furrever one! And, just a reminder, every time you purchase one at Rahr Dog, one is donated to a shelter pet!

PETSIES
While this may not be one of Bri’s favorites, it sure is one of ours! We fell in love with Petsies this year when they made this plushy of our spokesdog, Brioreo. The likeness is incredible. The quality is pawesome. They also did a bobblehead version of our girl. And everyone who sees these in our offices ask who did them! Petsies was created by Budsies, a company that turns your drawings and artwork into custom plushies, your photos into lookalike plush dolls, and other unique keepsakes. Their personalized, handmade gifts are perfect for the PAWliday season!

THE RAHR FAMILY
TEXAS POWER COUPLE GIVES BACK IN A REAL WAY
By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
Ihave known Tara Harper Rahr for decades. Caring, incredibly talented, beautiful and vigilant in her fight to help our furrever friends. Her husband, Fritz Rahr, is exactly the same. You’ve seen their non-profit, Rahr to the Rescue, as well as the PAWESOME toy (what I call “The Rahr”), which they refer to as the RahrDog Ball, featured in Pet Lifestyles Magazine quite a few times. For PAWliday this year, we had to catch up with the Texas-based power couple to help our readers understand just how PAWSOME they truly are.
While then Tara Harper had excelled in the design and manufacturing arm of her family’s holdings, Fritz, had a successful career working our nation’s railroads as a sales director. In 2004, he started Rahr & Sons Brewing, a microbrewery. And while mainstay beer brands ruled the market at the time, Fritz managed to grow the business exponentially over the years. In 2011, Tara left the business to only return in 2019, co-founding Blushly with her family. Blushly is currently one of the hottest beauty brands in the marketplace, selling through on QVC every time the beautiful animal rescuer appears to demo her products.
The Texas power couple then started Rahr To The Rescue to help further their mutual love of helping furrever friends find new, loving and responsible homes. As a way to support their mission, Tara and Fritz also put together the RahrDog Ball which helps shelter animals through fundraising as well as donations of the incredible toy to shelter pets.
But we wanted to know how this couple met and what led to their meteoric rise in the rescue world. So, when we asked Tara and Fritz how they met, they pointed me to an article that was published by The New York Times on August 7, 2020. According to that story, and confirmed by the couple, “In September 2017, Rahr messaged Harper on Facebook. “I reached out to her after I saw her comment on a mutual topic of interest.” Rahr says he couldn’t help himself. “I had to ask Tara out on a date,” Rahr said, “There was something captivating about Tara. Her love and passion for dog rescues really hit home for me. I would do anything for my dogs and from what I could tell, Tara would do that and a lot more.
And while that first “ask” didn’t work out the way Fritz had wanted, his vigilance in pursuing his fellow animal advocate and rescuer paid off. Their first date was in October 2017, and they were married on July 11, 2020. Of course, it was a special rescue animal that cemented the relationship for Tara in 2018.
After only about seven months of dating, Tara told Fritz that she needed to drive eight hours, roundtrip, to pick up an elderly and neglected German shepherd. And since they had only been together a short time, Tara assumed Fritz would not accompany her. Not only was Tara happily incorrect but spending the entire day in the car with Fritz and then seeing the rescue dog rest its paw on Fritz’s arm after he had bathed what Tara described as a smelly, dirty dog, was the last piece needed for Tara to know she had found her life partner.
Tara and Fritz are the kind of people who go to the ends of the Earth for friends and family. And obviously the same is true of their sentiment for, and support of, rescue animals. They have laughed in the face of adversity a couple of times, even when they were getting married. As it was during the heart of the pandemic, they were not going to let the lockdowns dampen their special day. So rather than risking having their guests potentially get sick, but still wanting to have their friends witness their nuptials, they hosted their ceremony on Zoom and haven’t looked back since.
Another example of how their love has helped them face a challenge was just two years after their wedding. Fritz had been diagnosed with stage three colorectal cancer. Not one to give up without a fight, Fritz turned his brewery business over to his sons to focus full time on his treatment while Tara took on the role of nursing him back to health. And in just two years, Fritz not only beat his prognosis, but he has also returned to his normal routine, running the brewery and helping our furrever friends. But now he has an additional mission to embark on, helping to raise awareness of how important early cancer detection really is.
Given how busy, entrepreneurial and dedicated they both are, we asked Tara and Fritz, “What is a day in the life of the Rahr’s like?” Tara tells PLM, “Every day is an adventure. We have 8 dogs and 2 fosters. The morning starts with Fritz making coffee and I start the feeding at the ‘zoo.’ Every dog has a different diet and different medical needs. Fritz and I work together in all of our companies. Every day is extremely different. One day we are tasting a new beer he has developed and the next day he’s corralling our dogs, keeping them quiet so I can go live on air on QVC. No day is the same.”
Now given how much our Spokesdog, Brioreo, loves what I call “The Rahr,” which is the RahrDog Ball, I had to ask how long this incredible toy took to develop and what was the inspiration behind it. According to Tara and Fritz, “Approximately 5 years ago we had the idea that we needed to do something more for all of the dogs who spend 24 hours in a cage in a shelter or rescue. We thought there has to be something we can do to help the dogs waiting on their forever home. We developed an indestructible dog ball to provide mental stimulation and to relieve stress. The buy one, give one ball give-back program was born. It is a fantastic initiative that aims to help shelter dogs across the United States. This program ensures that shelter dogs receive the proper stimulation they need by providing them with balls. These balls can help combat boredom and aggression, leading to increased adoptions and happier dogs. Additionally, this program can help ensure that shelter dogs have the opportunity to play, which can improve their overall well-being.”
The buy one, give one program they are referring to can be found at RahrDog.com where if you purchase one ball, another is donated to a shelter dog. According to Tara, “At the heart of our ball give-back program is the commitment to helping shelter dogs in need. That’s why for every ball purchased, we donate one ball to a shelter dog in need. This means that not only can you provide your own furry friend with a fun toy to play with, but you can also make a difference in the lives of shelter dogs across the United States.”
So of course we had to know, given the philanthropy of it, what was the inspiration for their founding of Rahr to the Rescue? Tara responded, “When we first started dating, we immediately started having adoption events and fundraisers at the brewery. We quickly realized we could do much more. In 2020 we officially created Rahr to the Rescue. We provide and hosts locations for adoption events, provide funding for life saving surgeries for dogs at rescue groups and shelters and creates awareness of the dog overpopulation problem in Dallas/ Fort Worth.”
As the entrepreneurial spirit is so strong with the power couple, I just had to ask them, “How does Blushly, Rahr Brewing and your other endeavors factor into your rescue and dog toy business?”
After thinking for a moment, they responded, “We bring a business background to our charity and Rahr Dog. Rahr Brewing is a gold medal winning beer company and Blushly is an award-winning beauty line. We took our business experience to develop an exceptional dog ball that truly saves dogs lives. As an example, you would think developing an indestructible dog ball would be easy considering that there are so many that claim to be indestructible on the market. It was extremely difficult. We spent years in development with our manufacturer to come up with a virtually indestructible ball that floats and is very mouth feel friendly. It was important that the ball was as tough as possible but yet dogs still wanted to play with it. We needed to consider that this ball would be with extremely strong dogs 24/7 and it was their only outlet for playing and releasing energy and anxiety. The ball needed to be big enough not to swallow, tough enough to last, bouncy and still fun.”
In this journalist’s humble opinion, you will never find another couple like Fritz and Tara Rahr. Both so loving, smart, dedicated and hardworking, not to mention handsome and beautiful, it is refreshing to see such a pawesome pair find true love with each other, and the rescues they make. Thank you for being so PAWFECT!

HOW SPECIALLY TRAINED DOGS ARE HELPING PEOPLE THROUGH A DIVORCE
By Ilyssa Panitz
In 1967, the Holmes and Rahe stress scale was created to measure an individual’s level of stress, based on 43-different life events. After a person completes a form filled with an array of questions, the responses are calculated. The latest results reveal that divorce and marital separation are only overshadowed by death in terms of stress levels. In addition to causing a person’s stress to soar, a divorce can also take a toll on their mental, emotional and physical health. According to the American Psychological Association, divorce can lead to increased anxiety, depression, loneliness, lack of self-esteem and feelings of insecurity, which is why in addition to talking to a licensed professional, such as a therapist, people are also seeking the aide of dogs to help them get through this difficult time.
PetHelpful.com says dogs ranked as being the most popular household pet, where approximately 45% of U.S. households, or about 65.1 million households, own a dog. Not only can dogs uplift the mood and dynamic in a home because they make great companions and are playful, but Zebra.com, a website offering all kinds of insurance including pet insurance, found 74% of pet owners believe their mental health improved after getting a pet, which is why they are growing in popularity in comforting people during a crisis.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SUPPORT ANIMALS
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) reports there are roughly 500,000 service dogs, and 200,000 emotional support animals specially trained to comfort a person in pain. Linda Keehn of Positive Canine Training and Services, LLC. tells Pet Lifestyles Magazine, “When it comes to working with dogs there are; Therapy Dogs, Emotional Support Animals and Service Dogs.” She explains, “Therapy dogs are used to help someone else,” and Nancy George-Michalson, Executive Director of New York Therapy Animals, Inc. adds, “A therapy dog along with their human partner (called a team) can benefit many people.”
“Service dogs,” Keehn says, “work for their owners and are task trained such as acting as a guide dog for someone who is visually impaired whereas an Emotional Support Animal provides emotional support to a specific person, such as their owner or handler.”
“In a situation that impacts a person emotionally, such as a divorce,” George-Michalson tells Pet Lifestyles Magazine, “they would probably seek the aid of a Therapy Dog or an Emotionally Support Animal (ESA), which are being used by some psychologists who invite the animals into their practice or have patients bring in their own emotional support dogs to further advance their recovery.”
George-Michalson says, “Other benefits the dogs have included a person’s blood pressure and heart rate decrease; breathing slows, feeling of relaxation, they are good for social interaction, connection, conversation, interpersonal communication, attention, they lessen isolation, bring out smiles, provide stability, establish trust plus a dog is nonjudgmental.”
Everyone handles their divorce differently, and for anyone needing a little extra encouragement, working with or getting a dog can be a great option. But Keehn says it is important to know the differences so you understand the parameters because some dogs have certain limitations as to where they are allowed to go. For example, Keehn says, “Therapy dogs do not have public access except when they are invited into places such as a psychologist’s office, hospital or a support group. Service dogs are allowed public access such as going to restaurant and stores while an Emotional Support Animal is not allowed public access but could live in housing that may not normally accept animals.”
Another distinction between the three categories of dogs is in the training. George-Michalson tells PLM, “To register a therapy dog at the New York Therapy Animals, Inc. there are requirements such as attending the organization’s seven-week education and training program that culminates in an evaluation assessment to pass and to then volunteer with our many partnerships. The dog must also be approved for health, safety, and appropriate temperament by their veterinarian.”
An Emotional Support Animal, according to the American Kennel Club may be trained for a specific owner, not specific tasks because they are considered to be a companion animal to help with anxiety, depression, and loneliness.”
A divorce is like an earthquake. It can shake and break-apart a person’s foundation, sometimes without warning and leave them feeling rattled and vulnerable. This is why more divorceés are aligning themselves with pets because, experts say, these furry buddies bring consistency, create a sense of normalcy, help build a new routine including caring for the dog, walking and exercising with the dog, playing with the dog plus they provide structure and familiarity during an uncertain time.
BEST FRIENDS NETWORK MEMBER PROFILE
MT. PLEASANT ANIMAL SHELTER
By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
In this issue, we announced that we would be dedicating all four 2025 issues to Best Friends Animal Society, giving the legendary organization a special section in each issue. Part of that section includes profiles on members of the Best Friends Network. Rather than wait until 2025, we wanted to give you a sneak peek as to what that looks like. This is Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter:
I have worked with Mount Pleasant Animal Shelter in East Hanover, New Jersey for almost 20 years. It is one of my favorite shelters in the country as their approach to animal care, compassion as well as adopters and fosters is bar none the best, in my humble opinion. I used to go to Mt. Pleasant almost every other weekend for years as my wife Kylie and I would deliver tough chew toys for their dogs, and other toys for their cat population while helping to promote their facility through our former advocacy, Rock & Rawhide. Their Director, Lorri Coppola is a very dear friend and one of the most dedicated people I have ever seen in rescue.
For more than 50 years, Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter has been providing exceptional care for homeless animals, working tirelessly to find a permanent, loving home for every cat and dog they serve. Their priority is to save abandoned animals within the community; but it doesn’t end there. Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter also partners with shelters around the country to save at risk animals from being euthanized.
Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter never euthanizes any animal for time or space reasons. Adoptable animals reside in their care, and custody, until they find their forever home. In other words, Mt. Pleasant staff and volunteers become their loving family until they become a part of a new loving and responsible family.
Best Friends Network
As a member of the Best Friends Network, Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter has access to over 5,000 other organizations’ resources. When asked why she loves to be a part of the Best Friends Network, Executive Director Lorri Coppola tells us, “What’s not to love about Best Friends Network! As a Shelter Director, I think what I love most are the tools they have available for shelters and their commitment to supporting animals nationwide. The resources they provide make them a trusted place to go for accurate and up-to-date information. They are working hard, inspiring others, and making a huge impact on the lives of shelters pets, and the sustainability of the shelters that house them.”
Kennel Enrichment
The kennel environment is, quite frankly, not natural. Sometimes this can stress a dog to a point where he or she might appear aggressive – even when they are not. This program is designed to stimulate dogs emotionally, physically, and mentally to help eliminate stress and avoid shelter burnout. Activities include multiple daily walks, playtime, music, outdoor time, and socialization.
Free-Roaming Cattery
Cats weren’t meant to be caged. Mt. Pleasant’s feline population have their freedom to roam around two catteries which allow them to interact with each other and enjoy ample attention from potential adopters. Grab a toy and start playing – you know you want to.
Education & Outreach
Mt. Pleasant’s Petucation program focuses on safe interaction with the community. It is the best I have seen to date from a local shelter. Students and adults alike are treated to free lessons on humane care and treatment of animals. The shelter’s dogs travel with Outreach Coordinators to visit schools and workplaces, alike.
Progressive Animal Care
All of Mt. Pleasant’s animals are microchipped, vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and receive exceptional veterinary care prior to adoption. These are essentials for responsible pet owners. In other words, Mt. Pleasant is giving new pet parents a paw up to make sure they have all the information they need with their new furrever one.
Lorri Coppola, Executive Director
There are not enough kind words on Earth to describe Lorri Coppola. Frankly, I wish every shelter and rescue could replicate her, but technology hasn’t gotten that advanced yet. Lorri’s dedication to her team and the animals, compassion for pets everywhere, and clear passion for rescue and advocacy are inspiring. Having worked with Lorri in and out of Mt. Pleasant, I am honored to also be able to call her my friend. And when you go to Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter, you will see the kind of impact this incredibly pawesome woman has made on the lives of not only the animals in her charge, but the people who work there as well.
Thank you, Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter for being a part of the solution; and for being such a pawesome member of the Best Friends Network.
JORDAN LIPPNER
CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD, SOUTHAMPTON ANIMAL SHELTER FOUNDATION
By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
Jordan Lippner is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation. Jordan is a committed animal advocate who believes that animals enhance our lives and deserve to be treated with love and dignity. This is Jordan’s take on the shelter and what it means to him.
The Southampton Animal Shelter is truly an amazing organization. Founded over 15 years ago when the Town of Southampton was on the verge of shuttering its town-run shelter, they are now the leading no-kill open admission animal shelter on Long Island. This is essential to Southampton’s mission and one of the key elements that distinguishes us from many of the other animal shelters out there. While many shelters will pick and choose which animals they rescue, Southampton Animal Shelter opens their doors to the many cats, dogs, bunnies, birds, and assorted other animals that get abandoned by their human families for various reasons, be it financial, time commitment, relocation or change of heart. This is in addition to taking in strays and rescuing animals from kill shelters around the state and elsewhere. But the organization does not simply take in these animals. They care for them, nourish them, provide any necessary training and medical care and ultimately place them in loving homes.
While the mission is locally focused in Southampton, they periodically reach beyond when the need arises and they have the space. For example, this past September, as hurricanes were about to ravage the Caribbean, they partnered with a pilot and shelters that were in the path of the storms to fly out and save numerous dogs from both Puerto Rico and St. Bart’s. This is in addition to the work they have done over the years pulling hundreds of dogs off of death row at various local kill shelters. All told, the Southampton Animal Shelter has saved, trained, healed and housed over a hundred thousand perfectly fun-loving animals from homelessness and death, and in turn placed with them in their forever homes. This vital work does not just benefit the animals, but as Jordan can personally attest to, people’s lives are immensely enriched and enhanced by adopting an animal. It is a beautifully symbiotic relationship. A story they like to tell (because it is true); Jordan was a 40-year old bachelor in the City until he rescued his first dog, Jack. The impact he had on Jordan was instantaneous. It is no coincidence that literally two weeks later he had the first date with the woman who would become the love of his life.
The Southampton Animal Shelter also invests in helping to educate the public about the benefits of rescuing an animal versus buying one at a pet store or from a breeder. They emphasize three key points in their outreach: First, mixed-breed dogs are typically far healthier than pure bred dogs. Pure bred dogs are the result of too much inbreeding and often have health complications and shorter lifespans. Second, you may find any breed you want at a shelter, be it at the Southampton Animal Shelter or elsewhere, including pure breeds. For example, Jordan and his wife have three rescues, two of which are pure bred Shih Tzus. Third, pet stores notoriously support puppy mills, which lock dogs in cages 24/7 with little to no medical care, force them to breed and then ship out their puppies for sale. When you buy at a pet store you are literally funding the torture and abuse of animals. So, in the end, if you are looking to enhance your world, visit the Southampton Animal Shelter, or stop by your local shelter and see the amazing animals who are looking for their forever homes. Jordan promises you won’t regret it!
Jordan is a lifelong New Yorker, having graduated the Rye Country Day School, Union College and Fordham Law School. His accomplished legal career has taken him from the AmLaw 15 law firm Hogan Lovells, to his years as Deputy General Counsel for News Corp to the head of employment and commercial litigation for The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, where he has been practicing since 2018. He happily left the city behind and now resides full time with his wife Dr. Jennifer Jablow in Water Mill, with their three senior rescue dogs, Jax, Suki and Sabrina.
ADOPTION CRISIS: WHAT IS HAPPENING
ANIMAL CARE CENTERS OF NYC (ACC)
By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
Before the pandemic, the live release rate at Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) was hovering around 92%. That means that over 90% of all of the animals in ACC’s charge found loving and responsible homes. ACC takes in over 30,000 dogs, cats, rabbits and other animals every single year. That means that more than 27,000 animals that were surrendered or found as a stray made their way into a new home. According to Best Friends Animal Society, that means that ACC was a no-kill shelter. Then the pandemic ended and everything changed for the worst; not just for ACC, but for municipal shelters in major metro areas across the country.
During the pandemic, you could hear cries of joy and celebration as municipal shelters across the country were emptied, en masse, by people who wanted to have a companion as we were locked into our homes. Rescues and shelters alike sent out email blasts extolling adopters across the nation for bringing more animals into loving and responsible homes, essentially emptying out facilities of their charges.
Once the pandemic ended, that wonderful thing known as “the human condition” reared its ugly head. As workers were ordered back to their cubicles, endless amounts of animals were returned to the very facilities they were adopted from. Most cited that they didn’t feel comfortable leaving a dog or cat at home alone during the day while they were at work. Many others stated that they simply didn’t understand what they were getting themselves into before they adopted as they were desperate for companionship during the lockdowns. Either way, what these people did was reprehensible on every level I can possibly think of.
Taking a former shelter dog or cat into a home for more than a year, enjoying their companionship and love to only thank them by returning them to the very prison you sprung them from is one of the most disgusting and selfish things I have ever bore witness to in my life. And I have seen A LOT of horrific things in my 48 years on this Earth. But that is exactly what happened once people were allowed to congregate and return to their offices again. Sadly, the return rate skyrocketed by percentages you cannot even begin to fathom once the lockdowns were over. And that was only the beginning of the problem we are facing today. As an example, last week, ACC suspended canine intake at their various locations due to severe overcapacity issues. That means ACC, despite lining their hallways with cages to compensate for larger populations, is full and can legally no longer take in canine surrenders until they lift the suspension.
But before I get too deep into this, there are some things you need to understand about municipal shelters, and why humane euthanization is happening in such high volumes again. And given the issues with ACC right now, I am going to use them as the example to illustrate everything. First off, so we are clear, ACC is contracted by the New York City Department of Health and Human Services to care for New York City’s animals. As such, ACC is required by law to take in every animal that shows up on their doorstep. Now that leads to the heart of the issue for what is happening at ACC right now. A municipal shelter only has so much space. That space is paid for by the municipality and there is a set budget, usually with some semblance of a buffer for emergencies, like a natural disaster when animals end up being taken to shelters en masse. However, that budget buffer only lasts so long. Especially in an economically challenged environment where people are surrendering their animals left and right because they can no longer afford to feed their pets, veterinary care, and more.
That means that ACC is going to keep hitting its maximum capacity threshold because there are so many surrenders. But, again, there is only so much space that is available. And when capacity is reached, sadly, ACC has no choice but to humanely euthanize for space. That is the contractual obligation they must abide by according to the NYC Department of Health and Human Services. It is also the law in the city. No, I don’t think that is ok. No caring human would. However, that doesn’t mean that you cannot appreciate the difficult place that ACC has been put in by having to make very difficult choices to euthanize to free up space. No, it isn’t the right thing to do, but what other choice is there for a municipal shelter? I know a lot of people at ACC personally and professionally. I can tell you without any doubt in my mind that none of these people who work or volunteer at ACC want to euthanize an animal. Especially a perfectly good dog or cat, just to make room for another stray or surrender. But that is what the law requires. To ignore that would lead to even larger problems.
So, what is the solution for ACC? Well, they are taking all of the right steps right now to try and get as many animals into new, loving and responsible homes. ACC is heavily promoting not only adoptions, but also foster programs, they have shut down canine intake and are also offering alternative solutions to those seeking to surrender. Those solutions include free veterinary care, food from the ACC pantry that they stock up on to help adopters, and even rental assistance help through the city’s Human Resources Administration. In other words, ACC is doing everything they are legally allowed to do to help bring this crisis to a close.
I know everyone looks to demonize someone else for their perceived crimes. Especially jurying by all of the negative and threatening posts we are seeing all over social media and the like. However, the slamming of ACC is just not right. Do they make mistakes? Yes. Don’t we all? Yes. All these naysayers and people going against ACC are doing is turning off potential adopters. After all, who wants to adopt from a place that is being described as “hell for animals” or “the place where you go to die?” No one. And therein lies the problem. As well intended as the protesters of ACC are, they are actually creating a larger problem. ACC staff are working their proverbial tails off to try and resolve this situation against some pretty heavy headwinds. Now I think our readers know me well enough to know I always call out the troublemakers and those who seek to do our furrever ones harm. That is not the case here. ACC is doing the right thing.
Rather than lead with hate and anger, wouldn’t it be better for our furrever ones to support ACC and help them resolve this crisis before more lives are lost?

THE FINAL WORD
WHERE HAVE ALL OF THE HEROES GONE? WHERE HAVE ALL OF THE HEROES GONE?
By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
Roughly 15 years ago, my wife and I started an animal advocacy organization called Rock & Rawhide. Its mission was to increase the level of adoptions of dogs and cats in shelters and rescues through promotion, distraction therapy and community outreach. We spent over a decade working night and day with the rescue and advocacy communities to get more animals into loving and responsible homes.. We worked with ACC, rescues, City Hall, the City Council and more to help ACC achieve a 92% live release rate. Through promotions, media partnerships and events, we helped save over 100,000 animals. We were called “heroes.” And while I may not agree with that moniker for something that should be a given in terms of people helping animals, it took a lot of “heroes” to make that happen. Today, I don’t see any heroes. I only see snake oil salespeople.
Back then, we leveraged our relationships with ABC, NBC, CBS, Elvis Duran & The Morning Show, iHeartRadio, Petco Foundation and Petco stores to promote adoption in ways they never had before. We worked with countless rescues to host events, promotions, and to drive more awareness of the need for animal adoption and fostering. And we succeeded given the live release rate at ACC, the levels of donations being made to rescues and shelters, as well as the general positive sentiment for adoption had skyrocketed.
As the pandemic waned on, we closed Rock & Rawhide because we felt our mission had been accomplished when shelters and rescues across the country were emptied out. Sadly, we had too much faith in humanity and took our eye off the ball. Then the pandemic ended, return rates skyrocketed while adoption rates stayed low and the current population overflow crisis began.
Before the pandemic, you had rescue organizations whose founders embezzled millions of dollars for their own personal expenses such as backyard renovations, breast enhancement surgery, facial reconstruction, mortgage payments and more. We even saw one rescue founder who bought a BMW with the proceeds from her non-profit. All done under the guise of “rescue expenses.” These are the people who would drive up pledges for dogs in urgent need (ie – dogs who were on the euthanization list wherein they would need tens of thousands of dollars to cover surgical costs, etc), collect the money and then leave the dog at the shelter, or even worse, take the dog and dump it at a boarding facility; effectively taking that dog from one prison to another. That is not rescue. That is fraud. And it is still happening. These people are not rescuers. They are not “heroes.” They are criminals.
The real “heroes” back then were our rescue organization partners (the honest ones), shelter staff and volunteers, as well as supporters of the community who were in it for the right reasons – to rescue. Today, while fraud has been curtailed somewhat because of the aftereffects of the pandemic and inflation (ie – people donating less, more paperwork required by the IRS and state, etc.), there are still significant challenges in the community. Those heroes I mentioned earlier have become few and far between in a community that was once known for its cohesion – a community once known to go to the ends of the Earth to increase adoptions.
When you think about animal rescue and advocacy, you think about warm, cuddly pets; kumbaya and zen moments; as well as groups of people surrounded by these beautiful animals. Unfortunately, all of that has changed to the point that I no longer recognize so much of the community after having spent 40 years in it. We have an opportunity to change the paradigm back to that inclusive, loving community we once were versus the rat’s nest of social climbers and self-aggrandizing wannabes that have polluted it.
There is only one organization I can think of that bridges the divide between recue, shelter, community and adopters; Best Friends Animal Society. And their “No-Kill Nation” goal in 2025 is achievable.
THE FINAL WORD: Only together can the animal rescue and advocacy communities affect positive change. Only together can we make a difference and, as Best Friends puts it, “Save Them All.” Please join me in supporting Best Friends Animal Society’s No-Kill Nation goal in 2025 at bestfriends.org.
