I could not think of a better way to celebrate the entrepreneur theme of this issue than to feature Mr. Wonderful himself, Kevin O’Leary, on the cover.

Long known for his capitalist savvy on the hit show Shark Tank, O’Leary has served as an inspiration to entrepreneurs across the globe for decades. elcome to the hot days of summer and some cool places to have fun. For me personally it’s the time of year when the kids are home from college and it gives us more time than usual to spend quality time together and make some new family memories. One of my favorite weeks of summer is traveling “Down the Shore” to Jerseys number one vacation destination for us it’s the Wildwoods. And as you will see that in one of our featured stories in this issue, Morey’s Piers is the place to play, stay and have fun. Who doesn’t love relaxing on the beach, splashing down at some awesome waterparks, going on some thrilling rides, playing “claw” machines in the arcade or just catching the fireworks show every Friday night. Let’s also not forget the boardwalk food, the famous Curly Fries make sure when you order get a bucket, maybe you in the mood for extra large slice at Jumbos, or a great sit down seafood dinner at Joe’s Fish with a perfect view on the entire pier and ocean.

Just remember at Morey’s Piers there’s something for everyone, you won’t be disappointed.

THE MAVERICK OF BUSINESS & INSPIRATION OF ENTREPRENEURS

here’s a certain cadence to New York’s business elite—the blend of intellect, swagger, and an almost kinetic drive to win. Few embody that rhythm quite like the “Maverick of Business,” Kevin O’Leary. Known to millions as “Mr. Wonderful,” a household name from ABC’s Shark Tank, O’Leary has long transcended the confines of television. He’s a capitalist philosopher. A venture architect. A champion, and sometimes a critic, of modern entrepreneurship. Yet always an inspiration to those that fight to achieve the lofty goals this legend has achieved in his own career.

For New Yorkers, O’Leary represents more than fame. He represents the very spirit of this city’s evolution: tireless, unapologetic, driven by the idea that the American Dream is still alive—as long as you’re willing to work for it.

Over the course of his career, O’Leary has worn many hats: software magnate, television icon, venture capitalist, political commentator, wine purveyor, and most recently, a champion of Main Street dining.

At the heart of it all lies one unshakable philosophy: numbers don’t lie, and discipline builds empires.

FROM BASEMENT STARTUP TO BOARDROOM VISIONARY Kevin O’Leary’s origin story is less about privilege and more about resourcefulness. Born in Montreal in 1954, O’Leary’s early life was marked by loss—his father passed away when he was young. His mother, Georgette, a savvy investor in her own right, passed down lessons that would later shape O’Leary’s financial DNA. She taught him about dividends and how to manage risk long before he set foot in a business classroom.

After earning an MBA from the Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario, O’Leary cofounded SoftKey Software Products in 1986 from his basement. What followed was a whirlwind of acquisitions and aggressive growth, culminating in the $4.2 billion sale of the company to Mattel in 1999. While the merger itself proved turbulent for Mattel, the transaction solidified O’Leary’s credentials as a dealmaker.

O’Leary could have retired quietly after the deal. Instead, he doubled down. He launched O’Leary Funds, a mutual fund company focused on conservative investing, and eventually transitioned into television, where his blunt, no-nonsense persona found fertile ground.

THE RISE OF O’LEARY VENTURES While Shark Tank cemented O’Leary’s fame, it also became a strategic platform for what would become his real legacy: O’Leary Ventures. The firm isn’t just another venture capital shop—it’s a philosophy in motion.

O’Leary Ventures invests in companies that exhibit strong fundamentals, scalable models, and exceptional leadership. But there’s a twist: emotional discipline is mandatory. “I don’t care how great your product is,” O’Leary often says. “If you don’t know your numbers, you don’t deserve my money.”

His portfolio is as diverse as the entrepreneurs behind it. From kitchen equipment brands such as Bertello Pizza Oven to fintech trailblazers such as Beanstox (which O’Leary co-founded), the firm has developed a reputation for investing in companies that combine profit with principle. O’Leary himself sits on boards, mentors founders, and isn’t afraid to roll up his sleeves.

He doesn’t just fund startups—he helps scale them.

One standout example is his early backing of Wicked Good Cupcakes, which became a viral dessert success after a deal on Shark Tank—and was eventually acquired

by Hickory Farms. That deal encapsulates O’Leary’s style: quick to spot potential, disciplined about exit.

Other Shark Tank deals included: Groovebook, a photo-printing app subscription service acquired by Shutterfly for $14.5 million.

Plated, a meal-kit delivery service acquired by Albertson’s for $300 million, with O’Leary’s stake netting him a significant profit.

NEW YORK’S INFLUENCE Though Canadian by birth, Kevin O’Leary is a New Yorker at heart. He’s often said that New York City is the “epicenter of ambition,” a testing ground where only the truly tenacious survive.

O’Leary’s frequent visits to New York—whether meeting portfolio companies, attending financial conferences, or taping television appearances—have only deepened his connection to the city. “There’s an honesty in this town,” he says. “People either perform or they don’t. That’s how I run my investments.”

He’s also invested directly in New York-based ventures.

His approach is hands-on, especially with consumer-facing businesses that benefit from the city’s cultural cachet. As he puts it, “If it can make it in New York, it can scale anywhere.”

ENTER THE DUMPLING GAME In early 2024, Kevin O’Leary made headlines again with a major move: O’Leary Ventures, alongside Matt Higgins (another Shark Tank alum), led a multimillion-dollar investment into Brooklyn Dumpling Shop (BDS), the highgrowth hospitality and culinary-driven concept providing distinct takes on classic menu items and Asian-inspired cuisine founded by hospitality veteran Stratis Morfogen. Now, I have always been brutally honest about my support of Stratis. We have been friends for over 30 years, and I have literally been to every single venue he has ever opened, managed and promoted including his latest venture, Diner24. So, when Stratis told me about his idea to launch Brooklyn Dumpling Shop, I was automatically a huge fan.

The concept was born during the pandemic, combining traditional dumpling recipes with a contactless, locker-based ordering system.

Think classic New York deli meets futuristic automation—with flavors at that time that ranged from pastrami dumplings to Philly cheesesteak and Korean barbecue. And every time I turned around, they were innovating a new dumpling or bowl flavor like Mac & Cheese and Kung Pao Chicken (yes, in dumpling form!).

O’Leary recognized not just a strong product, but an efficient model. In a LinkedIn post, O’Leary commented on his investment, “I was thrilled to come across Brooklyn Dumpling Shop. It’s a distinct fast-casual concept with fantastic food, leveraging technology and omni-channel points of sale. My team and I invested based on it being quality food, in a category with incredible growth potential, and supporting small business owners living their dream of entrepreneurship through franchising.”

With ambitions to scale rapidly, O’Leary saw a rare blend of taste, tech, and timing.

His investment wasn’t passive. He helped bring on Jeff Galletly, a former executive at Tim Hortons and Restaurant Brands International, to lead as CEO and accelerate expansion through franchising.

Today, BDS boasts over 15 locations with more on the way, offering additional fusions like chicken parmesan dumplings, bao bun bites, and the cold noodle salad. To keep the brand fresh, Galletly continues to introduce new flavors and is focused on the growth of the brand across the globe. They just launched a consumer-packaged goods (CPG) line and formed partnerships with like-minded entities such as Legends Hospitality—a move that has landed their dumplings, as we talked about in the May issue, at Yankee Stadium and more venues.

O’Leary’s belief in the brand is more than lip service. “Everything tastes better in a dumpling,” he joked—but beneath that levity is his signature thesis: solve a problem, scale the model, protect margins, and stay focused.

In a food-service sector plagued by rising labor costs and razor-thin margins, Brooklyn Dumpling Shop offers an antidote—brilliance without sacrificing flavor, and branding that feels both local and global. “It’s the only dumpling I’ve ever had that tastes like a New York sandwich,” O’Leary said.

With the full force of O’Leary Ventures behind it, the brand is on track for exponential growth in 2025. Personally, I am waiting for the team to change the Pepperoni Dumpling which is currently gluten-free – I like my gluten. After all, pizza and dumplings are two of New York’s favorite culinary sins.

THE HEART BEHIND THE HARDLINE Despite his public image as a ruthless investor, those who work closely with Kevin O’Leary tell a different story.

Many of the entrepreneurs who O’Leary has invested in have commented that the shark’s heart is just as big as his bite. While he is known as being a demanding investor, he’s equally known for being fiercely loyal to those who are prepared and put the work in. It has been said that if that is the case, O’Leary will literally go to war on an entrepreneur’s behalf. We have all seen it on Shark Tank update segments, or even just by hearing the way O’Leary speaks on his many appearances on FOX and CNN. O’Leary’s passion for entrepreneurship is deeply personal. “I grew up watching my mother manage her own investment portfolio,” he recalls. “She taught me the value of independence. That’s what I want to give to founders—freedom through structure.”

In recent years, O’Leary has become an outspoken advocate for financial literacy. He’s launched free online courses, partnered with schools, and even written books on money management. His message is consistent: learn the language of money or be at the mercy of those who do.

POLITICS, POLICY, AND THE SMALL BUSINESS FIGHT O’Leary hasn’t shied away from politics either. In 2017, he briefly ran for leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada, positioning himself as a fiscal hawk and pro-business reformer. Though he eventually dropped out, his campaign focused heavily on reducing corporate taxes and simplifying regulatory frameworks—messages that still resonate in small business circles.

He’s also been a vocal critic of government overreach during the pandemic, particularly policies that he believes punished small businesses while favoring big box corporations. “We watched thousands of Main Street businesses die while Amazon flourished,” he says. “That’s unacceptable.”

In interviews, O’Leary had called for targeted relief programs, simplified loan processes, and a “post-COVID Marshall Plan” to revitalize urban entrepreneurship. His influence is such that policymakers often reach out for input—even if they don’t always agree with him.

THE NEXT CHAPTER: WHAT DRIVES O’LEARY NOW At 70, Kevin O’Leary shows no signs of slowing down. If anything, he’s more energized than ever.

When he’s not on ABC with Shark Tank (which just wrapped its latest season set to air in the fall), he’s expanding his other holdings like O’Leary Fine Wines, a direct-to-consumer label that pairs his signature red blend with his economic philosophy (“No bottle over $20—it’s about value”).

But perhaps what is most exciting right now is how Kevin O’Leary can help the everyday person with their investment goals. As an example, earlier I referenced Beanstox which O’Leary co-founded. KEVIN O’LEARY, IN HIS OWN WORDS We asked O’Leary to share a few thoughts on what he’s learned—and what still excites him.

On risk: “Risk is a tool. Not a threat. You just need to know how to measure it.”

On failure: “Failure is part of the process. If you’re not failing, you’re not pushing hard enough.”

On legacy: “My legacy isn’t money. It’s impact. I want people to say, ‘Because of him, I built something.’”

CONCLUSION: A BLUEPRINT FOR BOLDNESS In a world filled with buzzwords and billion-dollar valuations, Kevin O’Leary remains refreshingly grounded. He believes in hard numbers, clear goals, and the transformative power of ownership. He’s built empires, helped others build theirs, and continues to evolve with a business world that’s anything but static. He is fiercely loyal and does have a heart for those that put the work in. But don’t kid yourself, while he may have a heart, he also knows when to differentiate and take the emotion out of the deal.

To call him just a shark is to miss the point. Kevin O’Leary is a builder. Of wealth, of companies, of people.

And that, perhaps, is the most wonderful thing of all.

WHERE SUMMER & BEING A KID LIVES ON

here’s something magnetic about the Jersey Shore in the summer. For New Yorkers, it’s a quick escape route from concrete to coastline. A place to reset, recharge, and maybe ride a roller coaster or two. But there’s one particular stretch of shoreline that has its own rhythm, a pulse that beats louder than the rest. And ya’ll know that is my jam. At the heart of that pulse is Morey’s Piers in Wildwood, New Jersey.

To say Morey’s Piers is an amusement park would be like calling the Empire State Building a tall office.

Technically accurate for sure, but it misses the point at the same time. Morey’s is a multi-generational, multi-pier marvel. It’s where nostalgia, thrill, beach life, and boardwalk charm all collide. And for me—a lifelong New Yorker with a deep appreciation for multi-generation institutions that get it right—Morey’s is more than just a weekend getaway. It’s tradition. It’s memory. It’s summer.

A JERSEY SHORE LEGEND Since 1969, when brothers Jack and Will Morey set up a giant fiberglass slide on Surfside Pier, this family-run wonderland has been evolving.

Today, it spans three massive piers—Surfside, Mariner’s, and Adventure—and includes two expansive water parks, dozens of rides, and some of the best shore-side eats you’ll ever find.

And the wild thing? It still feels like home. Even as it grows and modernizes, there’s something comfortingly familiar about Morey’s. Maybe it’s the sound of the tram car on the boardwalk announcing, “Watch the Tram Car, please!” or the way the smell of Curley’s Fries drifts on the ocean breeze. It all works together to remind you that this isn’t just another boardwalk—it’s a living, breathing piece of Americana. And that unto itself is pure gold!

Morey’s hasn’t just grown—it’s evolved. The design of each pier reflects a different mood. Surfside feels youthful and electric. Mariner’s is classic and family-focused. Adventure Pier, with its towering rides and urban artwork, caters to the wild hearts. That diversity in vibe is intentional. It’s like stepping into a different story depending on which pier you enter.

RIDE THE WAVES, THEN RIDE THE COASTER I usually start my day in Wildwood with a long walk on the beach, letting the Atlantic do its thing on my stress levels. After all, writing and managing a magazine in New York is not exactly a walk in the park!

Then it’s straight to Mariner’s Pier to ride the Giant Wheel. At 156 feet, it gives you the lay of the land—and the ocean. The views are pure magic and exactly what the doctor ordered. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Cape May. It’s the calm before the storm because from there, it’s time to turn up the volume.

The Sea Serpent is a classic—a looping coaster that’s been giving thrill seekers their fix for decades. Then there’s the Great White, a wooden coaster with more rumble than a subway car during rush hour. For something newer, the Runaway Tram is a familyfriendly ride that serves as a nod to Wildwood’s iconic tram cars. It’s a smooth ride but still enough to get the adrenaline going.

But it’s not just coasters. There’s something for every age and thrill level. From the swaying Samba Balloon ride for toddlers to the adrenalinepumping SkyCoaster, it’s impossible not to find your flavor of fun. A common thematic at Morey’s Piers where there is always something for everyone, no matter their taste or want.

WATER PARKS IN THE SKY From Florida to New York to New Jersey and beyond, I’ve been to plenty of water parks in my time. But there’s something surreal about floating down a lazy river or plunging down a water slide while overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. That’s the Ocean Oasis and Raging Waters experience.

Ocean Oasis is more of a chill, adult vibe—with a swim-up bar and private cabanas that make you feel like you’re in a Caribbean resort. Raging Waters, on the other hand, is more about family fun. Body slides, tube rides, rope swings—the works. It’s the perfect way to cool off after you’ve baked on the beach or screamed your lungs out on a coaster.

One of my favorite spots is the Cliff Dive slide.

Standing at the top, wind blowing, boardwalk buzzing below—it’s as close as I’ve come to feeling like I could fly. Then there’s the River Adventure, where you drift past waterfalls, under bridges, and into moments of absolute bliss.

FOODIE HEAVEN Anyone who knows me knows how much of a foodie I am. So when I tell say you know you’re at a legit boardwalk when the food is half the reason you came, you know I am being serious.

At Morey’s, the culinary game is next-level. Yes, there are the staples — Curley’s Fries (worth the hype), funnel cakes, deepfried Oreos, and jumbo slices of pizza bigger than your head.

But then there are the surprises.

Stubborn Bros. Beach Bar & Grille serves up ahi tuna tacos and craft cocktails, while PigDog Beach Bar is your go-to for BBQ and frozen margaritas right on the sand. There’s something about eating with your feet in the sand that just makes everything taste better. If you are looking for some killer seafood, Joe’s Fish Co has some of the freshest in the area, packed with deliciousness and is a perennial favorite. With live music throughout the summer and a killer ocean view from the upstairs deck and bar, this place has a great vibe that will make those signature drinks taste even greater than they already are!

Now, the grand-daddy of all culinary destinations at the piers has to be Founders Grub & Pub. This joint is a true celebration of those who chase their dreams and make the impossible, possible. And when they say they put the extra in extraordinary, they aren’t kidding, delivering some of the most vibrant, flavor packed fare in the region. Not to mention cocktails that set the tone for the culinary journey!

And for the grownups, the nightlife scene is low-key but solid.

Live bands, cold drinks, and ocean breezes? Yes, please. More, please!

Morey’s even puts on food festivals. Their annual Curley’s Fry Eating Contest is a fan favorite. And for those who lean gourmet, seasonal tastings and local chef spotlights have turned the piers into an under-the-radar culinary hot spot.

HOST OF 102.7 FM’S KAREN CARSON IN THE MORNING

very day like clockwork Karen Carson gets up at 3am, hits the gym by 3:45am for a workout, and is behind the microphone at 102.7-FM by 6am to start headlining her four-hour radio show, Karen Carson in The Morning. In many ways Karen considers herself to be an open book, since pretty much every topic is fair game on her program except politics. The studio she has been broadcasting from since 2017, has also become a saving grace because it pulled Carson up from some difficult and challenging times. During this exclusive interview with New York Lifestyles Magazine (NYLM), we got to know a lot more about Karen, including, why, after so much heartache, she’s singing a happy tune.

NYLM: When did you know you wanted to be on the radio?

Karen Carson: In college. I joined WMCX Monmouth University’s radio station, and I remember being terrified to go on the radio even though it was only 13 watts and it only went out to the parking lot. During one of the holiday breaks, the station manager put me on the air every single day and it just clicked for me.

NYLM: If you couldn’t work in radio, did you have a back-up career plan?

Karen Carson: A helicopter pilot, a pharmacist or an archeologist.

They were all on the list.

NYLM: What were your favorite stations or DJ’s you listened to growing up that inspired you?

Karen Carson: I loved Carol Miller on WNEW. I thought she sounded so cool. I also was a fan of Valerie Smaldone.

NYLM: Talk to me about the road to starring on the hottest show at 102.7 and becoming one of the most famous voices of NY? Karen Carson: There are always obstacles. In radio you can lose your job quickly and fast without warning. One day you are talking to your listeners and the next day it can be ripped away because a new company is coming in.

NYLM: Did that ever happen to you?

Karen Carson: I remember when I was in my 20’s working at a rock station in Honolulu when management came in, let us all go, and I had to move off the island because it was too expensive.

NYLM: Sounds like the path came with a setback and disappointment. What did you do?

Karen Carson: I moved back home and became a 25-year-old intern. I was using my own money to work in radio because I knew I wanted to be around it since it was exciting, mysterious and back then no one knew what you looked like.

NYLM: When did things turn a corner?

Karen Carson: Someone heard me down at the Jersey Shore on WJLK-FM and said there was an opening in New York, and I should apply. I did and I got the job!

NYLM: New York is the number one media market. Did you feel like you made it?

Karen Carson: New York is really cut-throat. If the station is not doing well, the powers that be come in because it’s a money game and they will rip it off the air. That happened multiple times, but I knew I had more to give so I kept going.

NYLM: You have been a staple here in New York for over three decades.

Karen Carson: I had a lot of opportunities, and you have to grab each one and hope it works. I have been at 102.7 for almost 15-years. WOW, I can’t believe I said that. I mean I have worked everywhere. Lite-FM, Q-104, KTU, 105.1 and now I am here. It’s not the easiest, most secure job to have but I love it.

NYLM: Radio Executive Jim Ryan told Radio Insider WNEW’s success is largely based around the morning show with Karen Carson? What is your reaction to that statement?

Karen Caron: I was really happy he said that. If anyone was instrumental in building this show it was Jim Ryan. He is a brilliant genius in the industry because he demands perfection. I had two failed morning shows before this and yet Jim believed in me. I mean who gets three chances?

NYLM: What comes to mind when you hear you have been a staple on the airwaves for over 30-years?

Karen Carson: It’s weird to hear you say that and it makes me really emotional. There are so many people like me out there and so many women.

I see myself as a mom. As someone who has been through it all, while working full-time and commuting to Manhattan.

NYLM: I listen to your program, and I notice you share a lot of your personal life on the air. Why so?

Karen Carson: I want to be real and connect with people. I went through a divorce, I lost my mom, yeah, I share it with people because I want them to know I am just like everybody else. There are days that I mess up. I once called The American Authors The American Idols (laughs), so yeah, I am like an idiot sometimes (laughs), but I think all of this can be funny, and it’s the laughter that gets us through those tough times.

NYLM: Has sharing your experience with divorce provided comfort?

Karen Carson: Yes, and I feel great because I was terrified at first to do it. I am supposed to be funny, not serious. The listeners give me the courage to do that. Life is hard on everybody. For me, I never dealt with the loss of anyone in my family and then all at once my mom died, I got divorced two weeks later, my husband left the house, my father moved in, all my kids were gone, and I became an empty nester. I mean you can’t make this up! It was like boom-boom-boom! I was like, “come on, what is next?”

As much as I try to find the humor I also share when it’s hard.

NYLM: Why was it important to make this public?

Karen Carson: I have always hated that word divorce, even when I was a child. There is such a stigma and ugliness when you say it. Divorce is really sad and the people that suffer the most are the children. But the more I showed little parts of myself, without upsetting my kids or if the guys threw out questions when I started talking about it like how you felt, what was that like, answering them helped me tell the story. The more I told the story the more I was like, “I can’t believe I just did that.” It was only after I saw the texts and phone calls coming in and people relating to what I said made me brave and gave me the strength to talk about it more because I saw it was helping people who were going through the same thing.

Everything came together for me when I was open and thought, “I can’t be the only one going through this, there has to be others.”

NYLM: You have accomplished so much in your career.

What is still left on the to-do list?

Karen Carson: I want to create a video that goes viral on TikTok (laughs).

NYLM: What is something no one knows about you?

Karen Carson: I want to be a good Gardner. Gardening is turning into my drug, and I am obsessed with getting in the dirt, planting, and creating. I also want to be the best mom, and keep getting better at doing what I do.

MEET THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE MORNINGS A BLAST KAREN CARSON, ANTHONY MALERBA (AKA INTERN ANTHONY) AND JOHNNY MINGIONE. The secret behind their success and popularity, even on social media where together they have a combined 85,100 followers on Instagram, starts with their on-air and real-life chemistry, which NYLM got to personally witness during a visit to their Manhattan office.

“We don’t try to be perfect,” Carson tells NYLM. “Totally,” Malerba chimes in, “It’s the realness that makes us who we are because aren’t pretending to be polished and like everything is sun and rainbows all the time and I think that makes us relatable to people.” Mingione excitedly nods and says, “We’re a happy dysfunctional family who likes to air our dirty laundry on the air. Anything we fight about or discuss; we bring to the show and then laugh about it.”

In some regards, fate brought these great talents together into one studio. After headlining two failed morning radio shows, Carson was tapped by radio executive Jim Ryan to come to 102.7 where Malerba was beginning his career as an intern, hence his nickname. Malerba’s wit and humor quickly impressed Carson, and so he got his big break. Fast forward to 2019, when Mingione was let go from the now defunct WPLJ-FM. Upon his dismissal, he posted a funny video that caught Carson’s eye, and she added him to the mix. “I was a little nervous when Anthony came on board,” Malerba confesses, “Because if there’s two of the same people on one team, one of them may not be needed but as we got to know each other, we realized we are more different than we are alike.”

As it turns out their differences are what make for non-stop conversation, endless jokes and constant banter that continue during hit song and commercial breaks. Mingione laughs and says, “Anthony is from Bensonhurst; Karen is from New Jersey, and I am from Long Island, so not only do we have a variety of backgrounds in the room, but we also have good coverage of the metro area.” The group also pokes fun at how they were born in different decades; Carson is a single mom dating someone new, Malerba is a newlywed and Mingione is tying the knot in October 2025, which Carson will officiate. Yet they have the same goal, creating a four-hour block of escapism where listeners can tune out the pressures of life and join in the laughs. “We have a responsibility to make people happy, Mingione adds, “And like the rest of the world we too have dealt with break-ups, divorces, deaths, ailing parents, sending kids to college, becoming empty nesters but when we cry it’s to each other because we are family. Then we rally and give it our all in every broadcast.”

“We go through a lot more behind the scenes than our audience realizes,” Malerba adds, “And as much as this show is a diversion for listeners, these four hours are a distraction from our lives too.”

Carson, Malerba, and Mingione never stop working to come up with creative content to make this block of time highly entertaining. “We write out the show the day before,” Carson says, “We begin by laying out where and when we want to talk about certain topics, we look for sound, guests, and after we go home, we are on the phone talking to one another, texting in a group chat, emailing all day until we go to bed and jot down ideas on the weekends.” When they segway to ads or music, Carson, Malerba, and Mingione go into overdrive by dividing and conquering responsibilities to make videos, edit the next segment, prep a caller or put the finishing touches on a social media post.

Carson also devotes hours scrolling through social media preparing for the popular segment, Can’t Beat Karen, where listeners try and win $1,000 by out-smarting Carson, a pop-culture junkie, by answering five questions in three second increments, which are put together

by Malerba. Blown Off, another fan favorite, centers on Carson, Malerba, and Mingione trying to get a couple back together by attempting to send them on a date they pay for and then there’s their annual holiday toy drive for children in need, which in 2024 collected record breaking 11,000 gifts.

According to Malerba, “The beauty of our show is anything can happen at any minute,” while Mingione adds, “I think the core of our magic is we have similar hearts and a lot of respect for each other.” As our time is wrapping up, Carson, Malerba and Mingione go in for a group hug where Carson concluded, “Not only do I get to work with these guys, but we are so blessed, honored and lucky to be doing a job we truly love and have a passion for.”

ove over Antibes and Cannes, your beaches may be lovely and great for vacationing, but your style has nothing on New York. Especially in the summer. Everyone knows that no one quite does summer chic like the Big Apple. The city is a melting pot of inspiration at the forefront of what’s trending in fashion, which is why the world continues to look at what we’re wearing. Whether sailing on the Hudson, strolling down the High Line or having that special dinner for two, here’s a run-down of this summer’s hottest trends to keep you looking fab through to Labor Day. THE LINEN EFFECT You know it’s summer when one of the most viral trends on social media comes back from its hibernation season - namely “the linen effect.” The fashion theory professes how anyone, especially guys, immediately experience a glow up when donning a white linen shirt. The same can be said for ladies and it doesn’t just stop at white linen shirts – pants, dresses, blazers, shorts – the linen effect is very real and spans beyond white. Shades of blue, navy, coral, beige, crème, even olivegreen tones are all safe bets this summer. Their lightweight breathability makes them your best friend for those scorching summer days when you want to look cool and not sweat through your clothes as linen is absorbent and dries faster than cotton. Linen also looks expensive making it perfect for a night out on the town or a weekend out east in Montauk!

THE PERFECT KNIT Counter-intuitive to what many would consider a summer textile, crochet is one of the most popular trends for both men and women this season thanks to the breathability of knit patterns.

Especially when you factor in the scorcher of a summer we are predicted to have!

Crochet provides coverage but more importantly provides an avenue for air to flow keeping you cool during the warmer months. This is a hot trend in tops. A crochet overshirt is an easy way to make a casual outfit look elevated or to dress down a stuffy, buttoned-up ensemble. Simply pair it with a tank underneath and you’re good to go. Crochet polos are also popular and fun way to break from the typical short-sleeve collared shirt of seasons past. From Zara to Saks, you’ll have no problem getting your hands on one around the city.

RAFFIA HARVEST SEASON Summer also signifies the start of raffia season – the time of the year where those raffia bags and totes are the ‘it’ bag of the summer. Not only is raffia one of the most environmentally friendly textiles but its quintessential summer and easy to find everywhere from H&M to Prada, Loewe, Bottega Veneta and beyond. Simply take a stroll down Madison Ave and you will find no shortage of raffia accessories to compliment your summer chic attire. If you are also all about the latest bag charm craze, yes, raffia is also Labubu-friendly – feel free to accessorize – they want to enjoy summer, too.

IT’S OK TO FLIP-FLOP Wicked’s Jonathan Bailey recently ignited a big debate while promoting his latest film – he wore flip flops to the red carpet. At first, reactions were mixed but the end verdict was that it was a very chic risk that paid off, further cementing his style icon status. The secret was in the styling, and this applies to everyone this summer. There’s a time and place for Havaianas and that’s at the beach or on the road when you’re vacationing and relaxing with family a la style Lampoon. If we’re looking to pull off summer chic in the city then we need to pay attention to the material, color and how we’re pairing them with our attire.

Leather is always a safe bet when deciding to wear flip-flops this season. Neutral colors generally pair well with most outfits. Should you find yourself wearing black this summer, a monochromatic look with black sandals is a very classy and elevated way to let your toes breathe while looking stylish. Now be advised - consider scoring the bottom of your sandals to create traction and prevent slipping before heading out the door! Those Hermes Izmir sandals are beautiful but they can also be very dangerous when walking on cobblestone or slippery sidewalks – this is the summer to live our best life not one to be remembered as fashion roadkill.

Remember, this is the season to have fun and take risks - be loud, proud, bold and stand out!

ROSCOE MOUNTAIN CLUB A YEAR-ROUND CATSKILLS RETREAT

t may be true that the old Borscht Belt resorts have long since been shuttered, but the Catskills are very much alive. And there are still many great places to enjoy the natural beauty and peaceful environment this region has to offer. One resort that stands out is Roscoe Mountain Club (RMC).

Formerly The Tennanah Lake Golf and Tennis Club, the resort has a history rooted in the Catskills region. Established in 1926, it’s the oldest golf course in Sullivan County.

GREAT VIEWS – GREAT GOLF RMC offers 1,000 pristine acres, a 60-mile view of the Catskill Mountains, glorious sunsets, and a long list of activities. Tops on that list is the 18-hole, par 71 championship golf course. The RMC course offers gorgeous mountain scenery and was recognized in 2024 as one of “America’s 25 Friendliest Public Golf Courses”

TROUT TOWN USA Another popular activity at RMC, and in the town of Roscoe, is fishing. As a matter of fact, Roscoe, NY has been known as “Trout Town USA” for decades – both here and overseas. Five of America’s top trout streams and numbers of reservoirs and lakes are located within a short distance. Trout fishermen’s grand slam - brook, brown and rainbow trout – are the prime target for anglers.

Roscoe Mountain Club boasts one of the most pristine bass fishing lakes in the Catskills. Their private 40-acre lake offers some of the best largemouth bass and yellow perch fishing around. The resort itself offers Full Day, Half Day and Introductory/Youth fishing trips and a variety of Fish & Stay Packages. One package, the Drive & Fly, offers it all – room, dinner, guided Fly-Fishing Trip and 18 holes of golf.

A number of other recreational activities keep guests going all day. Serious pickleball players will love RMC’s six immaculately maintained courts. How about a private pickleball party?

Reserve a court or two and include a cocktail bar, light food, and servers. Winter brings opportunities to enjoy RMC’s 1000 acres with snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and ice skating on the refrigerated rink. RMC offers a variety of free skate sessions as well as adult and youth hockey options.

Families and groups will have a great time gathering at The Lounge located in the beautiful, rustic-designed Barn. RMC’s 2and 3-bedroom Townhomes are set on a hillside overlooking the lake and feature full kitchens, dining rooms, living rooms, gas fireplaces, and exterior porches. And they are walking distance to the lake’s boat house. Larger families or small groups will love the Frankel House with 5 bedrooms or the 6-bedroom Burt’s Lodge.

The former firehouse turned brewery has been completely transformed from the initial 400-square foot tasting room to a sprawling 1,600-square foot tasting room, brewery, gift shop and beer garden. Open year-round, the brewery has live music on weekends and a pub menu with perfect accompaniments for their well-crafted brews. The beer garden, with its fire pits and lawn games, draws a crowd on those pleasant Catskills days.

AREA ATTRACTIONS Hopefully you find time to explore the area around Roscoe, as there are many things to see and do. As mentioned previously, the area boasts world-class trout fishing. A number of top rate fly stores offer hand-tied flies, expert instruction, and guided trips. Fly enthusiasts will want to visit the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum, situated on the banks of the famed Willowemoc Creek.

Music lovers will want to check the concert schedule at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, about a 30-minute drive from RMC. A visit to the Museum at Bethel Woods re-creates the nostalgic 1969 Woodstock experience. How about a night at the theater? The Forestburgh Playhouse has been entertaining Sullivan Catskills audiences since 1947.

From enjoying the great outdoors on a canoe or kayak trip on the scenic Delaware River in the summer or ski Holiday Mountain in the winter, this resort and region has it all. HIGH STAKES, SOOTHING SPAS, STUPENDOUS CULTURE

aratoga Springs was the Disneyland of nineteenth-century America,” quips James D. Parillo, executive director of the Saratoga Springs History Museum, located not coincidentally in the city’s both famous and infamous former Canfield Casino – more about that gaming venue in a minute.

The so-called Gilded Age (roughly from 1865 to the early 20th century), dubbed thusly from a lesser-known Mark Twain tome, The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today (1873), has come to signify a period of extraordinary economic and industrial growth—railroads were constructed and flourished; mechanized and automated factories mushroomed; political corruption was burnished to perfection; and chicanery blossomed: hooligans and hoodlums rubbed elbows with the elite; politicians and prostitutes (okay, ladies of the night) were brazenly seen side-by-side; and dubious business deals were made over and under the table. In short, it was the Wild West on the East Coast.

A HEADY HISTORY During those heady days, it was not uncommon to see the likes of broad-shouldered politicians from Boss Tweed’s Tammany Hall network, with, say, gambling legend Diamond Jim Brady, or impresario Florenz Ziegfeld, or sundry Whitneys, Vanderbilts, Morgans, or Goulds—and throw into that mix, a duo like John Warne “Bet-a-Million” Gates and his quadruple-threat paramour, Lillian Russell, acclaimed for her beauty, style, voice, and stage presence.

Among this gallimaufry of “gilded” gents was former heavyweight boxing champion John Morrissey, who was elected to Congress in 1866. He was also among the founding members of the renowned Saratoga Race Course, established in 1863, which is the oldest in America. Morrissey established the Saratoga Clubhouse in 1870 and in 1874 at the behest of the Congress and Empire Springwater Company; the southern section of adjacent Congress Park benefitted from a “little gardening” by the nascent landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted.

After Morrissey’s untimely death in 1878, ownership of the clubhouse (a casino, really, with the mantra, “No ladies, no locals, no credit”), was passed on to a business duo, and ultimately, to Richard Albert Canfield, who became the outright single owner in 1884, and thus the Canfield Casino was firmly established.

Today the Canfield Casino is one of the city’s most treasured landmarks (replete with its stained glass, coffered ceiling) — a lovely event venue and the site of the Saratoga Springs History Museum. This cultural institution. with a wealth of 16,000 artifacts and over 300,000 archival photographs, showcases an in-depth, eclectic, and fascinating mix of memorabilia, from tableware to curiosities — like three-dimensional artwork made of (gasp!) human hair and elaborate scherenschnitte (scissor-cut, silhouetted pictures).

You will find much more to mesmerize you when visiting this charming town, an easy train ride some 175 miles north of Gotham and nestled in the Capital-Saratoga Region. I spent a mere three days there and was sorry I didn’t have more time — make sure to plan your trip so you can take in everything, including toothsome culinary experiences, gambling glee, singular and sinful shopping, compelling culture, and wellness indulgences.

SARATOGA SPRINGS Not the least of which is the famous waters. To the Mohawks and other indigenous peoples, the area was known as Serachtague, or “place of swift water,” the result of fissures in the earth’s surface, that produced waters rich in minerals—ideal for “the cure.” Thus, did Saratoga Springs become known as the Queen of the Spas.

Today, you can still go to the legendary Mineral Baths at the Roosevelt Baths & Spa, which clings to its décor and ambience of yesteryear (ca. 1935), a combination of politesse, pampering, and procedures that are homey and comfy; after a 40-minute soak in a giant porcelain tub, I felt both relaxed and reinvigorated.

OFF TO THE RACES Another must-see is the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. While the official racing season is 49 days (July 10 to September 1, which included, earlier in the summer, the Belmont Stakes and Fourth of July Festival), the museum is open year-round.

Here you’ll find a replica of a typical starting gate and stalls, a wall of jockeys’ famed, framed racing silks, iconic saddles from noteworthy thoroughbreds, and even an exhibit of three mixtures of earthy compositions—dirt, turf, and synthetic—that constitute the grounds of various racetracks. (Don’t forget to don your most fabulous hat for the races!)

If you have not tanked up on the plentiful fare at the racetrack, where there are also fun food trucks, I would suggest a few eateries, each proffering different experiences: For breakfast, do not miss Sweet Mimi’s Café—and go early; natives queue up with the roosters for the pancakes and French toast that cascade off the plate, and the biscuits that melt in your mouth (take home some raspberry almond bread). For a leisurely meal of down-home cooking, I chose Lago

by Druthers, with a peaceful panorama of Saratoga Lake and tasty comfort food. For my “big night out,” I found Prime, with a bucolic view of the Saratoga National Golf Club, absolutely outstanding, and I’m still slavering over my starter (crab tater tots) and my dessert (peanut butter skillet). Need I say more? And while you’re happily shopping on the main drag, aptly called Broadway, take a half-block detour to Bocage Champagne Bar, an absolute oasis of bubbly.

A highlight for me was an evening at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. (The season runs from mid-May to the end of September.)

SPAC, as it’s known, is the summer home to the New York City Ballet, and the Philadelphia Orchestra, under the expert baton of Yannick Nézet-Séguin. (Appearing with the Philadelphia Orchestra in individual performances are Renée Flemming and Cynthia Erivo.)

Last season, I had the good fortune to get tickets for Richard Strauss’s rarely heard symphonic work, “An Alpine Symphony,” a tone poem that is truly a religious experience. Also on tap this summer are celebrated, big-time contemporary performers, including Jason Aldean, Avril Lavigne, Bonnie Raitt, and Shania Twain, all part of presentations from Live Nation. Other bold-face names performing this summer include just about everything and everyone, from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center to Jerry Seinfeld.

Psst: Make time, too, for a visit to The National Bottle Museum, dedicated to showcasing the area’s bottled waters (think Saratoga Springs, the only naturally carbonated mineral springs east of the Rocky Mountains) and the Saratoga County History Center, which is currently mounting the exhibit In the Saratoga Style: Potato Chips and Their Regional Folklore. NAUTICAL SURPRISES AWAIT

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED WHEN SAILING WITH VIRGIN VOYAGES

y husband and I are eating our breakfast in The Galley, the food hall aboard Virgin Voyages’ Valiant Lady, when a silver-haired man with a white T-shirt and jeans comes strolling by us.

Other heads turn and then point, and a few bold Sailors (Virgin Voyages’ name for guests on its ships) approach the man. Yes, he smiles and takes a selfie with them. Sir Richard Branson, Virgin founder and self-made billionaire, is just making his way through the window-filled dining space just like every other guest.

This unexpected moment is one of many we experienced during our five-night “Celebration Voyage” roundtrip from Miami with stops in Cozumel and Virgin Voyages’ private beach club in Bimini, The Bahamas. Branson lives in the Caribbean and popped over for the day as part of the themed cruise. Members of Virgin’s executive team had been sailing with us from the start of the cruise, mingling with the guests—leading a Bingo game, participating in sunrise yoga on deck, or helping out at trivia. Virgin’s very approachable CEO warmly answered guests’ questions and suggestions whether they stopped him in the elevator or at the Grounds Club coffee spot.

Reggaeton guest star Nicky Jam entertained the crowd onboard and then again at the private beach club. This was followed by another surprise Branson appearance that ended with him literally jumping into the pool fully-clothed to join the crowd.

Next year this cruise has been renamed the “Red Hot Sailing Club Voyage” to pay tribute to its loyal guest program. It will take place on Virgin’s new ship Brilliant Lady, which debuts in September 2025. She will sail for nine nights from Miami to the Caribbean on March 12, 2026, with stops in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; St. John’s, Antigua; Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis; and The Beach Club at Bimini, The Bahamas. Once again, Virgin promises surprise guests and live performances, and special events hosted by Virgin executives and brand partners.

Unexpected moments, however, are a part of every Virgin cruise.

For example, each sailing features a Scarlet Night when guests are encouraged to dress in their favorite red clothing. The night is capped off with a party on the pool deck where guests are encouraged to jump into the pool fully clothed (much like Branson at The Beach Club). As an adults-only cruise line with no dress code and with individuality encouraged, on that night and all nights, attire is often part of the experience itself with guests proudly promenading their outfits along the main entertainment deck.

This carefree attitude continues with some of the entertainment featuring “nauti” innuendo, such as the “The Miss Behave Show”.

There is also a drag queen show. Other offerings included live music played in intimate areas throughout the ship. On this sailing, choices included featured guest artist Selkii, former The Voice contestant, singing soulful tunes. Besides Bingo and trivia, popular cruise activities came in the form of puzzle competitions, a host of board games to borrow at The Social Club, craft classes, and private karaoke booths.

UPSCALE OFFERINGS Despite Virgin’s four ships hosting some 2,770 guests, the line features unexpected upscale touches in its dining and accommodations. It may have a laissez faire attitude when it comes to its dress code, but it remains very serious about its culinary offerings with 20-plus choices. There are no dining rooms, only small specialty restaurants—without the upcharge you may see on other ships. Reservations are necessary, but walk-ins are possible especially for duos. Our favorites were Extra Virgin, treating us to top-notch regional Italian fare, and The Wake, the ship’s steak and seafood restaurant. Among the other choices are The Test Kitchen for small creative multi-course bites—with an option for vegetarians, as well as a Mexican restaurant, and hands-on interactive Korean barbeque place.

For luxury accommodations, each of Virgin’s ships feature 78 RockStar Quarters or onboard suites. The RockStar treatment begins with an exclusive VIP pathway to the ship during embarkation and continues with priority access to onboard entertainment, dining reservations, and excursions. There is also a RockStar agent to help with any requests. RockStars have exclusive access to Richard’s Rooftop, a secluded private club on deck with two hot tubs, daybeds, and its own bar. Every suite features full bars and cocktail kits with the first round on the house, upgraded bedding, and bath amenities.

The two “Massive Suites” are the ship’s largest at 2,147 square feet each. They come with their own music room, which can also be used as an extra bedroom and includes guitars and an amplifier and a vinyl turntable in the adjacent living room. They have large private terraces with hot tubs and outdoor showers, circular conversation pits, two hammocks, and outdoor dining tables for six.

Stepping away from the typical cruise in another way, every Virgin voyage not only includes all dining and entertainment, but also gratuities, WiFi, sodas, juices, and unlimited group fitness classes— just another unexpected plus when it comes to sailing on Virgin.

During my latest visit to the British capital, I had the privilege of experiencing this neoclassical masterpiece firsthand. This decision wasn’t easy, and I hold no resentment towards him and know it’s for the better, but I can’t help but feel an overall sense of emptiness. I feel some guilt wondering how it got to this point and if I’m at fault, and I’m also left wondering if and when I’ll find someone. How do I beat these feelings and come out of this funk?

Sincerely, Divorced Dame Dear Divorced Dame, It’s perfectly natural to feel a sense of defeat after you’ve ended a marriage. Afterall, something has died. You need to allow yourself the time to mourn what you once loved and lived as well as mourn what could have been with your now ex-spouse in the future.

That process takes time and can cause the same pain and stages of grief as the death of a living being. Those stages include denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. The stages can flipflop, repeat, and subside and then return. There is no rhyme nor reason to how process plays out. You just need to allow yourself to sit with the pain, as uncomfortable as it may seem or feel to get through it. And you will get through it!

It sounds as though you may presently be experiencing both the stages of bargaining (when you try and revisit what could have been or what you should have done defiantly to change your circumstances) as well as depression comorbidly. We can all revisit choices and think about ways we could have done better in any life circumstance. However, you should trust yourself to know that at the time you acted in your best interest and made the best decision for you based on the evidence and knowledge you had in hand. If you think you could have done things better or differently, my advice is to take those lessons and hold them close so you can bring them into your next chapter. Whether it’s with a romantic partner, a newfound friendship (or as unsettling circumstances arise with old friendships) those new lessons will serve you with a new set of skills. That is always the best way we can learn from our mistakes and/or “failures.” When we can turn them into future strengths and sources of power, we always win!

Regarding entering into a new romantic relationship, only you can know when you’re ready to tackle the dating world again. My advice is to be patient with yourself and look at each prospective suitor as an experience to grow and learn about yourself: What you want in a partner, what you don’t want and the type of partner you aspire to be this time around. The dating cycle can also bring turmoil and triumph along the way so be sure you allow yourself the necessary time to heal and mend from this encounter, first.

Best wishes on your new chapter and when you are ready to turn the page into love, do so with excitement and joy. The options toward new happiness are endless!

ENDLESS SUMMER GRILLING RECIPES, TIPS, AND PRODUCTS

ummer grilling is something I look forward to all year long. It’s a season that encourages creativity in the kitchen, and on the grill. It’s an open invitation to experiment with new techniques, take bold culinary risks, and enjoy unhurried meals with friends and family. The slower rhythm of summer allows time to reconnect, relax, and truly savor the joy of preparing something special sizzling or smoking on the grill. And for me, that kind of experience is priceless.

Summer also happens to be the most socially charged time of year, packed with backyard gatherings, beach picnics, and late-night hangouts where food is the common denominator. It’s when party food shines—party ribs, wings, sliders, hot dogs, sausages—you name it. These dishes aren’t just crowd-pleasers; they’re playful, nostalgic, and endlessly customizable. The fun is in how creative you want to get, especially when it comes to layering flavors. Whether you start with spicy and finish with sweet, or vice versa, the possibilities are endless—and always delicious.

RIBS GLORIOUS RIBS Party Ribs are THE easiest and most flavor packed, simple thing you can offer at a cookout, backyard party, etc. And there are tons of ways to do them. What differentiates one set of party ribs from another is in the rub and the sauce you either use or make. Feel free to use whatever your preference is.

The only caveat in this recipe is the volume of ribs. If you are going to make 2 or 3 racks, then you need to multiply the ingredients by that amount.

SP-arty Ribs Ingredients 1 Rack – St. Louis Style Ribs 1/2 Cup of Your Favorite Rub 1 Stick of Salted Butter, Cubed 1/3 Cup Dark Brown Sugar (you can use light brown if you want a lighter flavor) 3 Tablespoons of Clover Honey 1 Cup of Your Favorite BBQ Sauce Instructions Preheat the smoker to 275 degrees.

Remove the membrane from the underside of the ribs and then cut between bones separating into individual ribs. Season the ribs generously on all sides with your rub.

Let the ribs sit at room temperature for 30 minutes minimally, but preferably for an hour, for the rub to really set.

Place directly on the smoker, meat side up for about 90 minutes, until the internal temperature is 170°F (best to use a wireless meat thermometer like Meater or Typher). Flip the ribs every 20 - 30 minutes so that you get an even cook all around.

Transfer the ribs to a large pan such as a disposable foil roasting pan. Add the butter, sugar, and honey. Then add enough BBQ sauce to coat the ribs well, about a cup.

Mix and toss the ribs well to evenly coat. Cover with foil, then place in smoker. Cook an additional 45 minutes or until temperature reads 205°F and then remove from the smoker.

Rest 10 minutes before serving.

Sean-Patrick’s Hot & Smoked Candied Baby Backs The “candied” description refers to the caramelization of the sauce on top which becomes akin to a visit to the candy store! If made correctly, the flavor profile from the sauce, and the caramelization of it, will set your soul on a sweet adventure, balanced by the hot honey underneath!

Ingredients 1 Rack Baby Back Ribs 1/2 Cup Frugoni’s Seasonings TX.SP (Salt & Pepper) 4 Tb Salted Butter 1/2 Cup Light Brown Sugar 1/4 Cup Mike’s Hot Honey 1 1/2 Cup Cackalacky Cheerwine Sweet Sauce Instructions Preheat your smoker to 200°F. Remove the membrane. Rub with Frugoni’s Seasonings TX.SP. Place the seasoned baby back ribs on the grates of your smoker, meat side up, and smoke for 2 hours. Then remove from the smoker and turn the temperature up to 250°F. Create an aluminum boat and place the ribs inside. Pour a cup of apple juice over the ribs into the boat and seal the aluminum foil.

Return the ribs to the smoker for another hour.

Remove the ribs from the apple juice bath. Lay out a piece of butcher paper. Put the ribs, meat side up, on top and drizzle Mike’s Hot Honey over the top. Sprinkle brown sugar across and lay on the tabs of butter. Close the butcher paper up and put back in the smoker for an hour.

Then remove, and turn the temperature of the grill up to 350°F. Brush with Cackalacky Cheerwine Sweet Sauce twice so it creates a decent, but not overpowering layer. Return the ribs to the smoker when it hits 350.

This is the part where the top gets “candied.” Make sure you only leave your ribs on the smoker grill for about 15 minutes. Brush the rack at the 5- and 10-minute marks with a thin layer of the Cackalacky Cheerwine Sweet Sauce. Please note that you should not leave the grill unattended as the sugar from the sauce and juice can burn very easily.

Let the ribs rest for about 15 minutes off the grill. Serve and enjoy!

HOT DOGS & SAUSAGES Everyone loves a great hot dog or sausage, especially at a backyard BBQ. And when it comes grilling them, many overcomplicate it. This is a simple, no-nonsense way to make your favorite dogs and sausages: For either, start by preheating the grill and creating a two-zone fire with a hot side and a cooler side. To cook hot dogs, place them over the hot side of the grill for searing and browning, then move them to a cooler side to finish cooking through. Watch them closely to prevent burning and rotate them frequently for even cooking and grill marks. The hot dogs are done when they are plumped up and have a slightly burst appearance, and reach an internal temperature of 160°F With sausages, it’s the opposite where you place the sausages on the cooler side to cook through first (about 8-10 mins to 160°F for pork, 165°F for chicken or turkey), then sear them on the hot side for color and flavor (about 2-3 mins per side). This method helps prevent the sausages from drying out or splitting.

Whether it’s a sausage or a hot dog, remember that toppings and sauces are always the deal maker! Personally, I prefer peppers and onions on top of my sausages. On dogs, I’ll take sauerkraut and McCaffrey’s yellow mustard (mccaffreybrands.com) every day. But remember, you can also be creative with your toppings, too! Be bold and try some new things this summer!

BURGERS AND STEAKS When it comes to burgers, while I believe in the basics being the best, the truth is that ground brisket will deliver a much better flavor experience. Yes, it has a higher fat content level than traditional ground meat, but for a cookout, it’s off the charts on flavor. Ratcliff Premium Meats (ratcliffpremiummeats.com) sent me a couple of pounds that just blew the doors off most of my normal suppliers. Ratcliff is also who sells NFL Offensive Tackle Trent Brown’s Brown Ranch beef ribeye steaks which are like butter. Ratcliff is currently selling “Trent Brown’s Top Picks Bundle” which includes a flank steak, tri tip steak, 2 ribeye steaks and 6 beef patties for $110. In my opinion, it’s worth every penny and then some!

Ground Brisket Burgers You don’t need to overcomplicate this. Burgers should be simple and let the meat deliver the flavor. Just remember that with a higher fat content, brisket needs to be watched on the grill more closely as they are more prone to burning.

Ingredients 1 1/2 pounds ground brisket Frugoni’s Seasonings TX.SP (Salt & Pepper), garlic powder 4 slices cheese (optional) 4 hamburger buns, split; toasted Instructions Split the meat into 4 equal portions. Hand shape each portion into a 3/4-inch-thick burger and make a depression in the center with your thumb. Season both sides of each burger with salt, pepper and garlic.

Heat a gas grill to high or heat coals in a charcoal grill until they glow bright orange and ash over. Grill the burgers until golden brown and slightly charred, about 3 minutes.

Flip. Cook until golden brown and slightly charred on the second side, 3 – 4 minutes for medium rare or until cooked to desired degree of doneness.

Add the cheese, if using, to the tops of the burgers during the last minute of cooking and top with a cover, close the grill cover, or tent the burgers with aluminum foil to melt the cheese properly.

Sandwich the hot burgers between the toasted buns and serve immediately.

Grilled Ribeye Steaks A true cookout requires steaks. Personally, I have found that ribeye steaks are the most popular in a crowd and you won’t find a better-quality cut than Trent Brown’s Brown Ranch ribeye beef steaks at Ratcliff. When you do have that cookout with ribeyes, here are some simple tips to get your grill on with this cut for a few guests at a time based on 1-inch-thick steaks: Preheat the grill: Get your grill hot before placing the steaks on it. Aim for a high heat setting, around 450-500°F. Clean the grates: Clean the grill grates with a grill brush.

Consider two-zone grilling: Many recommend the two-zone grilling method, where one half of the grill is on high heat for searing, and the other half is off for finishing the cooking with indirect heat.

Sear the steaks: Place the ribeye steaks on the hot grill and sear each side for about 2-3 minutes to develop a nice crust.

Finish cooking: After searing, move the steaks to a cooler part of the grill to finish cooking to your desired doneness.

Use a meat thermometer: The best way to determine when your steak is ready is by using a meat thermometer. Most prefer medium-rare which is about 130-140°F and takes roughly 4 – 5 minutes per side.

Don’t overcrowd the grill: Make sure there’s enough space between the steaks on the grill to allow for even cooking.

Resting: Let the steaks rest: Remove the steaks from the grill and let them rest for 5-10 minutes (or longer for thicker steaks) before slicing. This allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, making it tender and juicy.

Slice against the grain: When slicing, cut across the grain for maximum tenderness.

Chef Andrew Molen’s Chimichurri Marinade & Sauce The hardest part of making Chimichurri Steak is not in grilling the steak, but in making sure you get the actual chimichurri sauce done correctly! This recipe makes both an incredible sauce and marinade.

Ingredients 1/2 Cup EVOO 4 Tablespoons Red Wine Vinegar 4 Tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar 1/2 Cup Parsley Finely Chopped 1/2 Cup Cilantro, Finely Chopped 3-4 Cloves Garlic, Finely Chopped or Minced 6 Sliced Pieces or 1 1/2 Hot Cherry Peppers 3/4 Teaspoon Dried Oregano 4 Tablespoons Lime Juice 1 Teaspoon Coarse Salt Level 1/2 Teaspoon Pepper to Taste Instructions Put all ingredients into a food processor. Pulse chop/mix the ingredients until blended, but the cherry peppers are still in chunks. If using as a marinade, immediately.

ntrepreneurs are a tough breed, especially in the hospitality space. Sometimes referred to as “foodpreneurs,” they are rare, but incredibly nimble and creative. As this is the Entrepreneurs issue, I wanted to highlight three in particular that are near and dear to my heart when it comes to their offerings, and locations.

Chris Barish & Julie Mulligan Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer, TenderCrush & The Lookup Rooftop Chris and Julie, with Chef Stephen Parker, rocked the fast casual space in 2015 by launching Black Tap (blacktap.com) which has literally defined what a great burger is globally. Add to it the foodpreneurs’ trend-quaking CrazyShake phenomenon and you have the perfect storm of entrepreneurial innovation!

Now the couple is at it again with TenderCrush (tender-crush.com) which aims to define New York Style Crispy Chicken while disrupting the space even further with their I Scream Tender, a play on an ice cream novelty debuting at the TenderCrush location in SoHo this month. The team also have The Lookup Rooftop at the Kixby Hotel (thelookuprooftop.com) which serves some of the yummiest views of the Empire State Building alongside their delicious cocktails and fare.

Carlos Suarez Bobo, Claudette, Roey’s and Rosemary’s Carlos Suarez is one of those rare foodpreneurs who blends vision, heart, and community into every dish and dining room he touches. A former Wall Streeter turned restaurateur; Carlos pivoted from finance to follow his passion for hospitality—launching Bobo (bobonyc.com) in the West Village in 2007. But he didn’t stop there. THE TASTE OF SUMMER MEMORIES

rowing up, summer was always about fresh and flavorful produce, brilliant barbecue, movie theater popcorn and an insatiable desire for fairground treats. So, this month, I wanted to take you on a trip down memory lane and learn how to make some summertime yumminess of your own!

When it came to fresh produce, I was spoiled as a Manhattan kid who spent his weekends in the Hudson Valley. Especially during the summer. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of shucking fresh corn from Mr. Potts’ farm in Tivoli, just as my dad and I were wrapping up grilling steaks for our Saturday night dinner. I remember going to farm stands, and farms themselves, in towns like Red Hood, Rhinebeck, Tivoli and around the Taconic region. Whether it was running to get berries from “The Wayside Stand” by Montgomery Place Orchards just west of Red Hook or grabbing fruit pies at Meisner’s Heritage Farm stand outside of Hudson, there was always an abundance of yumminess in the summer air.

In honor of that, I thought a little summer pie was in order. As strange as this sounds, I am not a fan of Apple Pie in the summer because prime apple picking season is in the Fall (YUMMO!). During July/August, I prefer more traditional summer flavors, like strawberries!

Sullivan’s Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Ingredients 1 Cup Cane Sugar 1/2 Teaspoon Pure Vanilla Extract 1/2 Teaspoon Salt 1 Tablespoon Orange Juice 1/2 Cup All-Purpose Flour 1 Pound Rhubarb, Cut Into ¼-Inch Slices 4 Cups Fresh Strawberries, Hulled and Quartered 1 (14.1 Ounce) Package Pastry for a Double Crust 9-Inch Pie 2 Tablespoons Irish Butter, Chopped 1 Large Egg Yolk 2 Tablespoons Coarse Sugar for Sprinkling Garnish

Instructions While the oven preheats to 400°F, mix flour and sugar together in a large bowl, set aside.

Add strawberries, chopped rhubarb, vanilla extract, orange juice and salt to a bowl and stir. Then mix with sugar and flour bowl, let stand for 30 – 40 minutes. Pour filling into prepared pie crust (layering bottom dough into the tin). Add butter chunks evenly across the top of the filling.

Take the dough for the top crust onto a floured surface, and using a pastry wheel, sharp knife, or pizza cutter, cut strips 1/2- to 1-inch wide. Carefully thread the strips over and under one another, pulling back strips as necessary to weave. Press the edges of the strips into the bottom pie crust edges to seal. Use a small knife to trim off excess dough. Seal edges of top and bottom crust where they meet with water. Lightly brush top lattice with egg yolk. Sprinkle with coarse sugar.

Place the pie onto a large baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes. Keeping the pie in the oven, turn the temperature down to 350°F and bake for an additional 30 minutes. After the first 20 minutes of bake time, you should wrap the rim of the pie crust with foil so it just covers the crust to prevent the edges from browning too quickly. Cool pie on wire rack for about 2 hours to let the filling thicken and set.

Serve with vanilla ice cream and enjoy!

A TASTY AF-FAIR OF FOOD Now when it comes to those nostalgia fueled moments of fairground food, I always look back to those scorching childhood summer days at the Dutchess County Fair at the end of August. After riding the Gravitron, because no one was silly enough to eat before that gravity sucking adventure, there was nothing like strolling along the Midway eating cotton candy, or being on the Ferris wheel enjoying a funnel cake or bag of zeppoles. Yes, fair and carnival food is certainly a tempt of fate as you board the cholesterol roller coaster ride, but it is worth every triglyceride – until the stomachache hits you the next morning if you ate too many fried Oreos, corn dogs or sweet Italian sausages and peppers!

Midway Funnel Cake You can’t go to a street fair, carnival or county fair without having funnel cake! This is a no-nonsense simple recipe I’ve used for years for backyard parties.

Ingredients 1 1/3 Cups All-Purpose Flour 1 1/2 Tablespoons White Sugar 3/4 Teaspoon Baking Powder 1/4 Teaspoon Salt 1 Egg 3/4 – 1 Cup Whole Milk 1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract 1/3 Cup Confectioners’ Sugar for Dusting Vegetable Oil for Frying Instructions Using a heavy pan, fill with oil (about 1-inch deep) and heat to 375°F. In a large bowl, beat together egg, vanilla extract, and 3/4 cup of milk (reserve 1/4 cup). Using the same bowl, sift flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder in; beat together until mixture is smooth. If mixture is too thick, slowly add more milk to thin it out.

If you have a funnel, pour batter through it over hot oil in a circular motion to form a rounded mesh. If you don’t have a funnel, you can use a measuring cup and pour it in a thin stream in a circular motion into the hot oil. Fry in hot oil until bottom is golden brown; flip and continue cooking until golden brown all over. Drain on paper towels. Repeat until the batter is gone.

Sprinkle cakes with confectioners’ sugar through a sifter while still hot.

County Fair Fried Ice Cream This one always amazed me. Think about it – fried ice cream. And I used to watch them do this at a few different fairs and street festivals.

It was messy as all hell, complicated and used a lot of oil. But it was one of the tastiest fair treats I had ever had. So, I put myself through the ringer to develop this alternative that still delivers the same flavor punch and crunch the original does, but without the pain of oil, and certainly the extra fat!

Ingredients 5 Cups Corn Flakes Cereal 1 Cup Sweetened Shredded Coconut 2 1/2 Tsp Ground Cinnamon 1/2 Cup Salted Butter 1 Quart of Vanilla Ice Cream, Firm Enough To Shape But Just Soft Enough To Scoop Honey Instructions Crush the cornflakes to small bits.

Melt butter in a nonstick medium size fry pan over medium heat. Stir in crushed cornflakes, coconut, cinnamon and increase heat to just under medium-high.

Pan fry mixture, stirring constantly until golden brown (corn flakes and coconut should be crispened up a bit), 2 – 3 minutes.

Remove from heat, pour mixture in a shallow bowl, letting cool. Remove ice cream from freezer and scoop out desired serving (8 single and 4 double scoops are in each quart). Using gloved hands, shape into a ball.

As soon as ice cream balls are formed, drop into cornflake/Coconut mix and roll to evenly coat. Pressing mix into outside of ice cream ball for a thicker crust.

Freeze for 15 minutes to harden ice cream and keep frozen until ready to serve. When ready, place ball into a bowl, and drizzle honey over the top. You can also use hot fudge, chocolate syrup or whatever other topping you want. Enjoy!

SPIRITS OF THE CITY Like my love for the culinary arts, my affection for mixology has come from a lifetime of being around Master Mixologists like “King Cocktail” Dale DeGroff (who I have known since I was “knee-high”), “The Cocktail Guru” Jonathan Pogash and Clover Club founder Julie Reiner. Held at Chicago’s iconic Lyric Opera, the sold-out event welcomed almost 2,000 attendees and delivered a compelling message. The James Beard Foundation isn’t just handing out medals; it’s setting the compass for how the food world evolves.

A FOUNDATION ROOTED IN PURPOSE For decades, the James Beard Foundation has stood at the crossroads of culinary heritage and progress. Established in 1986 in memory of legendary cookbook author and teacher James Beard, the Foundation has grown into a national nonprofit focused on “Good Food for Good®.” Its initiatives span from leadership training and education to advocacy work, all with an emphasis on building a more equitable, sustainable, and culturally rich food ecosystem..

The annual Awards—first held in 1990—are the most visible expression of this mission. Over time, the categories have expanded to reflect the industry’s evolution, including new awards for beverage professionals and regional talent. But more importantly, the criteria have shifted to include the broader impact of the honorees: how they treat their teams, how they serve their communities, and how they contribute to a thriving, inclusive food culture.

As CEO Clare Reichenbach stated during this year’s ceremony, “These outstanding professionals are the epitome of Good Food for Good®, elevating our industry’s standards and redefining what’s possible in American cuisine.”

NEW YORK CITY AT THE HELM Unsurprisingly, New York City left a significant mark this year.

Chef Jungsik Yim of Jungsik received Outstanding Chef, a milestone for modern Korean cuisine in America. Yim’s artistry reflects the global maturity of the city’s dining scene—fusing tradition with modernity in a way few chefs can replicate.

Atomix, a temple of sensory storytelling and hospitality in Manhattan, earned the Outstanding Hospitality honor. Atomix doesn’t just serve a meal—it crafts an experience. This award highlights the emotional intelligence and care that can turn dining into something transcendent.

Ignacio “Nacho” Jimenez, founder of East Village’s Superbueno, was named Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service. Jimenez’s cocktails are more than beverages—they are expressions of culture and identity, spotlighting Mexican flavors in a sophisticated, entirely new format.

ACROSS THE COUNTRY, STORIES OF IMPACT This year’s winners stretched from Tulsa to Providence, Phoenix to Portland, telling a wider and richer story about America’s food identity.

Phila Lorn, named Emerging Chef, is making waves at Mawn in Philadelphia, where his Cambodian-rooted dishes deliver deeply personal and culturally layered cuisine. HONORING TRADITION AND HUMANITY The America’s Classics awards continue to be among the most cherished recognitions. A MODERN AMERICAN STEAKHOUSE WITH THE WOW FACTOR

onterey is situated at 37 East 50th Street, close to the Lotte Palace Hotel, Saks Fifth Avenue and St. Patrick’s Cathedral, making it ideal to visit after a day of sightseeing and shopping—but you should make a dedicated trip here just for a mind-blowing elevated American steakhouse meal! The atmosphere is elegant and airy—the main dining room almost looks something you would see on a luxury cruise line, complete with white nautical style metal railings along the upper tiers. The ceilings are sky high; the walls are in cool colors and the curvy brass ceiling lamps with round bulbs have strong Midcentury Modern vibes.

A TOUCH OF RETRO FLAIR Before you say that there are a million upscale steakhouse and/ or Modern American venues in the city, let me point out that Monterey has several unique, charming retro touches including the aforementioned Jetsons-style ceiling lamps and curved orange velvet dining booths on the outer edges of the main floor. The series of tall arched shelves of liquor behind the bar almost looks like a library of spirits.

There are two particular retro touches that I fell in love with that I have not seen in any Manhattan fine dining establishments before.

One is the stunningly beautiful cream-colored seven-foot prime rib cart. Guests pick out their own piece from the whole rib roast, getting the optional “au jus” and a cup of heavenly horseradish cream. Someone at the MTA should consider adding a larger version of this long cylindrical cart to the ends of select subway cars—it would attract more passengers and bring in a sophisticated dining crowd!

I asked Executive Chef James Tracey (who trained at the American Culinary Institute and has worked at the likes of Craft, Gramercy Tavern and Lespinasse) about how the prime rib cart concept came up and he revealed, “One of our partners, Dudi Sasson, and myself liked the idea of the prime rib cart and what it brings to the space. The space is large and open, compared to traditional steakhouses, which tend to be dark and a little cramped. We jumped on the opportunity to bring life to the space with table side elements. I think we have one of the best prime rib in the city and our Friday and Saturday night special (which is only $75 including an appetizer and dessert) is a great deal.”

Before you ask, YES—I had the prime rib which is about a 14 or 15-ounce aged prime cut and comes with ultra smooth mashed potatoes. My meat was sided with the Crispy Artichokes with Meyer Lemon appetizer as well as the Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Bacon, two highly satisfying EVOO laden dishes. This was quite a lot of food and could easily have served two people.

The other special touch, that I have previously only encountered in New Orleans, is Bananas Foster prepared at your table on a cart with gas burners; part of the secret to this indulgent dessert is using slightly underripe bananas. Order this and you will see that the flames and the buttery rum scent makes heads turn all around you—plus there will be lots of “oohs” and “aahs.” As for portion size, this classic Creole dessert can satisfy two or three folks with sweet tooths—and to make things even more special, it comes topped with candied pecans and large dollops of homemade vanilla ice cream.

I did try my guest’s Bananas Foster and it knocked me out but I had heard so much about Monterey’s Cloud Cake that I had to try it. This dessert features layers of soft, fluffy cake that almost melt in your mouth. The Cloud Cake features homemade whipped cream, light yellow cake layers, a little bit of strawberry coulis and a touch of fresh lime juice. Last but not least, it’s topped with 24K gold leaf. This is a perfect choice for those who enjoy a lighter, less rich dessert but still want something delicious and satisfying.

I had to ask Executive Chef Tracey what his perfect meal at his resto would be and he responded, “I love our Comté & Onion Bread, Barbecued Prawns, Crispy Artichokes, Porterhouse Steak and Chocolate Soufflé. That would essentially be my perfect meal at Monterey.”

A “MIXED BAG” CROWD What kind of crowd does Monterey bring out being that it is smack dab in the center of the city’s most famous midtown sites? Tracey states, “Our clientele is mostly midtown business guests with a splash of tourists and some regulars. We are a few years in now and are hoping to continue to grow and have more people discover us. Our amazing private events spaces have been getting a lot of traction lately – we book parties from 15 all the way up to 240 people, and the team and I love hosting these celebrations.”

STELLAR RATINGS You might have noticed that Monterey has 4.5 star and up ratings on Yelp.

One of the keys to their success is hands-on ingredient sourcing by Chef Tracey and his kitchen staff. He reveals, “I have a great group of about five to seven trusted seafood vendors that I work with, depending on what they specialize in. My philosophy is always to go for the best sourcing, even if it means ordering from multiple places. I use La Frieda for all our dry-aged meats. We use local vegetables whenever they’re in season, particularly for daily specials.”

For seafood enthusiasts, Monterey’s offerings are, pardon the pun, “off the hook.” The Tuna Tartare, seafood tower known as the Monterey Plateau, Half Dozen Oysters platter, and Roast Branzino with Roasted Cauliflower, Caper Berries and Romanesco Sauce are bestsellers. The wine cellar is extensive and Beverage Director Aviram Turgeman has handpicked highly rated bottles from Spain, France and Italy.

Overall, Monterey strives to deliver not just a meal, but an experience that guests will remember. You will be surprised not only by the amazing quality of the food, but by the friendly staff and how promptly everything that you order comes out of the kitchen. Everyone working at Monterey seems to genuinely enjoy their job and connecting with guests. Chef Tracey is possibly the staffer most satisfied with his job, however. He concludes with a smile, “Opening Monterey was a joy simply because of how beautiful and different the space is. I’ve been able to build my own team that I love to work with every day.”

The consummate hostess, culinary tastemaker, and lifestyle expert returned to her showbiz roots recently, reclaiming the spotlight in style with a dazzling two-night cabaret performance at The Laurie Beechman Theatre in Midtown Manhattan. Her new one-woman show, Girl Talk, was a resounding hit, selling out and culminating in standing ovations from a rapturous crowd.

MOVIE FAVORITES RETURN SUPERMAN PG-13 Marvel fans of James Gunn’s unique style as the writer-director of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” trilogy and “The Suicide Squad” are excited to see what he does for DC Comics with his re-boot of the “Superman” franchise. It’s a whole new beginning for DC Studios, with David Corenswet reimagining the role of Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Add in other favorites (we’d watch it just for Hoult) like Alan Tudyk, Nathan Fillion, and Wendell Pierce and it just may be the superhero reboot of the summer.

THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS Not yet rated If Pedro Pascal has anything to say about it, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is going to be the summer’s big reboot, as the popular star takes the lead as Reed Richards, aka Mister Fantastic. He and his fellow astronauts played by Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach are transformed into superheroes while on a space mission in this retro 1960s good-vs.-evil superheroes story. Set back when the original Stan LeeJack Kirby Marvel Comic about the Four was released, this is a true new beginning for this amazing foursome.

JURASSIC WORLD: REBIRTH PG-13 Who knew that when “Jurassic Park” released in 1993 that over 30 years later Steven Spielberg would be on his seventh iteration in 2025? Serving as executive producer for all the movies, Spielberg keeps giving audiences what they want – more dinosaurs! “Jurassic World: Rebirth” begins a new chapter in the ongoing story, with Scarlett Johansson taking on the role as leader of a covert operation returning to the original Jurassic Park island. Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey and Rupert Friend join in the inevitable mayhem as once again humans decide to mess with dinosaurs.

FREAKIER FRIDAY Not yet rated The mother-daughter body switch idea has fascinated moviegoers since Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris first brought it to life in “Freaky Friday” in 1976 (when Jodie was just 14 years old). And now it’s back yet again, as Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan return to follow up their version, made in 2003 when Lindsay was 17. This sequel also stars Hark Harmon and Chad Michael Murray from that version, proving that in Hollywood you can go home again when strange magic is involved.

THE NAKED GUN Not yet rated Liam Neeson isn’t exactly a Hollywood comedic legend, but when the chance to play Frank Drebin Jr. came along, he jumped at the opportunity.

Following in Leslie Neilsen’s footsteps as his son in the legendary “The Naked Gun” comedy franchise may shift Neeson’s career in a whole new direction, playing the bumbling detective’s son with the same savoir faire. Pamela Anderson, Danny Huston, and Paul Walter Hauser join in the mayhem.

BIG CREATORS AND TOP STARS HIT THE SMALL SCREEN ALIEN: EARTH F/X and Hulu We’ll basically watch anything Noah Hawley creates, after he won us (and the world) over with “Fargo,” his deliciously dark crime series that got 70 Emmy nominations over five seasons. So since he is the force behind “Alien: Earth,” the continuation of the “Alien” franchise made for the small screen, we’re in. This iteration looks at the beginning of the horrific sci-fi tale, set two years before the first terrifying film (released in 1979). Sydney Chandler, Timothy Olyphant, and Essie Davis star in this much-anticipated new series.

CHIEF OF WAR Apple TV+ Jason Momoa not only stars in but is also the moving force and creator behind “Chief of War,” the new miniseries devoted to bringing the fascinating story of Hawaii’s unification to the world. Set in the late 1700s, the epic follows what happened when separate kings ruled each of the Hawaiian Islands, all vying for control. Momoa plays a famed warrior swept up in the conflicts in this bloody true tale of Hawaii’s history, performed by a predominantly Polynesian cast.

THE TERMINAL LIST: DARK WOLF Prime Video Taylor Kitsch continues his leading role in this prequel to 2022’s popular spy-thriller series “The Terminal List,” going back in time to remember how he transitioned from being a Navy SEAL into a covert CIA agent. There’s lots of action and taut adventure in this one, too, and Chris Pratt also reprises his role in the earlier series. Luke Hemsworth, Tom Hopper, and Robert Wisdom also co-star.

THE THURSDAY MURDER CLUB Netflix This much-anticipated Netflix movie adaptation of Richard Osman’s internationally best-selling “The Thursday Murder Club” has a dream cast to match his incredibly clever storytelling. The premise is simple: four retirees who live in an English retirement community are a bit bored, so when a mysterious series of events occur near their homes, they jump into solving the mystery with gusto. With Helen Mirren leading the way and Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, and Celia Imrie following happily along, this fearsome foursome is on the case. Naomi Ackie, David Tennant, and Richard E. Grant are also along for the very fun ride.

TOO MUCH Netflix Lena Dunham returns to series television with this romantic comedy, but this time she leaves the acting to others. Instead, Dunham is concentrating on directing and writing, giving fans the tribulations of Jessica, an American woman (Megan Stalter of “Hanks” fame) who moves to London when her love life in the US falls apart. When she meets Felix (Will Sharpe), modern romance develops – or does it? With an all-star cast including Naomi Watts, Kit Harrington, Emily Ratajkowski, and Andrew Scott, something sexy seems bound to happen.

As part of The Met’s Corporate Patron Program, Loews Regency is now offering its guests private thematic tours of the museum’s world-renowned collection. Personally, I can’t wait to see how The Met’s educators bring these stories to life when the galleries are silent and still, save for the whispers of a small group of art lovers and the soft creak of museum floors.

BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD UNLEASHES PETS ONTO THE SMALL SCREEN

ince September 2019, Bryce Dallas Howard has been travelling the world talking to adults and children from all diverse areas and backgrounds for a documentary called PETS. Despite their different ages, countries where they reside or languages they speak, the one thing everyone has in common is the extraordinary relationship and love they have for their furry companions.

Now airing on Disney+, PETS is a 79-minute film, centering on a wide range of interviews with individuals who live with an eclectic group of pets including an owl, a 1,000-pound pig, a physically challenged pig, dogs, cats, goats, cows, rabbits, chickens and a snake.

Howard, a long-time animal enthusiast told NYLM, “Pets bring out the best of people in many ways, and I wanted to celebrate the hilarity, the absurdity, the brilliance, and profound greatness of that relationship so many of us can relate to.”

The movie opens by questioning kids, who are standing in front of a turquoise screen, to individually explain what their pet means to them. “There were a lot of things I heard that were pretty consistent,” Howard tells us, “Because when kids have a pet, it’s their first relationship with someone other than a human and their thought process is, ‘I’m in charge of this. I need to be the responsible one,’ and the more I questioned them the more I realized these youngsters were mini grown-ups with very strong opinions, tons of great stories, and theories about why they get so much pleasure and joy from their pets.”

In addition to showcasing the joy and laughter having a pet brings, another point Howard conveys though a series of many conversations, “love is love is love is love,” and as Howard puts it, “that’s an important message to remember because people can have greater adoration for others, such as a pet, who they see as a vital member of their family.”

Howard, who produces and directs the film, with the support of dad Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Documentaries, also incorporates original footage of a day in the life of the people she profiles and the bond they have with their beloved pets. Take for example, Kristin Hartness and Jay Yontz, co-founders of Ziggy’s Refuge Farm Sanctuary in North Carolina who take in and care for dozens of animals suffering from severe disability.

Or Sergi Basoli, who kayaks around the world with his rescue dog, Nirvana.

Howard tells NYLM, “There are lots of individuals who are doing wonderful things for and with their pets and we get to capture and spotlight it in this production.” Producer Elizabeth Jameson, who is a casting director with four pets and well connected in the rescue space, used her professional and personal background to help locate the pets’ parents you meet in the movie.

While the tone of the film is fun, family friendly, and upbeat, Howard also adds, it was important to add another component, the passing of a pet. “It’s hard to make a film like this without addressing pet loss because we know there will also come a time when you need to say goodbye.” During the making of PETS Howard says she was surprised to learn, “Culturally, there is not a lot of space for pet grief and yet up to 70% of households in the US have a pet.” Howard adds, “When someone loses a pet, we really don’t know what the protocol or space is.

It’s still a big deal and no one should go through it alone, especially youngsters.”

Howard was given permission to gently discuss death with the children, which she said sent a powerful message about the bereavement process because the first encounter some children may have with dying is when they lose a pet. “Although the physical presence is no longer there,” Howards tells us, “The love and memories remain forever and that was reinforced when a child recalled the moment, he saw two white butterflies and described how they symbolized his two dogs that died. It was such a beautiful moment and was a powerful sentiment that still stays with me today.”

hen we adopted our dog, Brioreo, we were told she was an American StaffordshireDachshund mix. At first glance, it made sense — she had the broad smile and stocky build of a Staffie, paired with some quirky proportions, like her ears, that hinted at a Dachshund’s signature charm. But something about her — her strength and athleticism, her herding instincts, even her insanely acute alertness— had us wondering if there was more to the story. A DAZZLING EVENING WITH THE MANHATTAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC

here are few venues more emblematic of New York glamour than the Rainbow Room.

Perched high above Rockefeller Plaza, this storied space has played host to some of the city’s most renowned and elegant affairs. But on a spring night in 2025, the Rainbow Room belonged to the future of music in our fair city. The Manhattan School of Music (MSM) held its annual gala, a glittering celebration of talent, community, and philanthropy—one that soared on the wings of unforgettable performances, heartfelt tributes, and a profound commitment to musical excellence.

As a longtime participant in New York’s cultural heartbeat, I’ve attended more than my fair share of fundraisers and black-tie events. But MSM’s gala didn’t just strike a chord—it composed an entire symphony. The atmosphere buzzed with anticipation as notable guests, including Hillary Rodham Clinton, Alec Baldwin, and Hilaria Baldwin, gathered to honor a powerhouse of global arts education. It was a night not merely of spectacle, but of substance.

The evening was emceed charismatically by MSM alumnus and celebrated countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo. A magnetic figure in the world of opera, Costanzo brought both gravitas and warmth to the proceedings, weaving personal anecdotes into introductions that reminded us all of the real impact MSM has on its students.

At the heart of the night’s celebration was the International Advisory Board (IAB), chaired by Carla Bossi-Comelli. The IAB’s unwavering financial and global support has empowered MSM to broaden its reach and continue attracting the brightest young musicians from around the world. My former neighbor from the El Dorado on Central Park West, Alec Baldwin, in a deeply personal presentation, lauded the board’s tireless advocacy and its role in sustaining MSM’s mission. And when Hillary Clinton took to the podium, her remarks underscored the vital role of the arts in bridging cultural divides and fostering understanding—a mission MSM pursues every day.

Of course, the music itself was the soul of the evening. The performances were nothing short of breathtaking, showcasing the sheer range and depth of MSM’s artistic universe. Jazz, opera, Broadway, and classical compositions converged in a program that felt like a love letter to the school’s diverse curriculum.

Grammy-nominated jazz pianist Christian Sands lit up the room with a virtuosic solo rendition of Stephen Sondheim’s “Company.” His fingers danced across the keys with effortless brilliance, reaffirming jazz’s central place at MSM. The moment was electric—equal parts reverence and innovation.

Then came the “Sign-Off Medley,” an inspired arrangement by the remarkable Ingrid Jensen. Blending Herbie Hancock’s “Maiden Voyage,” Joe Hamilton’s “I’m So Glad We Had This Time Together,” and the beloved “Over the Rainbow,” it brought together an eclectic ensemble of talents—June Cavlan, Bernie Williams, Ted Rosenthal, John Benitez, Kabelo Mokhatla, and Jensen herself—for a performance that radiated joy and emotional resonance.

by Hannah Jones and Costanzo himself, with Myra Huang providing exquisite piano accompaniment. From poignant arias to a lush popular standard, their vocal prowess brought tears to more than a few eyes in the room.

And then, the crescendo: a full-throttle performance of Felix Mendelssohn’s String Octet in E-flat major, Op. 20 (iv. Presto). The ensemble—comprised entirely of MSM alumni and graduating students—delivered the piece with precision and passion. Ilmar Gavilan, I-Jung Huang, Jinwoo Lee, Julia Choi, Shmuel Katz, Cong Wu, Tommy Mesa, and Niles Luther commanded the stage, each musician contributing to a performance that was both technically stunning and emotionally rich.

Looking around the room during this final act, I saw something extraordinary: the future of music, not in abstract, but in motion— composed of individuals deeply trained, deeply inspired, and deeply committed to their craft. MSM doesn’t just teach music; it builds artists who shape the world through sound.

The Rainbow Room, decked in crystal and candlelight, hummed with the voices of MSM’s past, present, and future. Notable guests— Maribel Lieberman, Rupert Holmes, Bernie Williams, Noémi K. Neidorff, Crystal Morris, Ann Ziff, and others—mingled with students and faculty, sharing laughter and stories. Lorraine Gallard, Chair of the MSM Board of Trustees, alongside President James Gandre, offered words of thanks that were as moving as the music itself. It was, in every sense, a night of harmony.

Founded in 1918 by visionary educator Janet Daniels Schenck, MSM has grown from a community music school into one of the most respected conservatories in the world. Today, the School serves more than 1,000 students from over 50 countries and nearly every U.S. state. Its faculty boasts artists from the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and the very best of Broadway and jazz. With programs spanning classical, jazz, and musical theatre, MSM offers training from the Precollege level through doctoral studies.

Beyond the stage, its outreach touches 6,000 schoolchildren through arts-in-education and 2,000 more through its acclaimed Distance Learning Program.

What makes MSM truly special, however, is its ethos: a belief that music matters, not just as entertainment or performance, but as a force for personal transformation and societal connection.

That spirit echoed throughout the gala—from the performances that stirred our souls to the speeches that reminded us why the arts are essential. It’s no wonder MSM has become a magnet for global talent. It’s not simply that the school turns out exceptional musicians. It’s that it prepares them to change the world.

As the evening drew to a close, the applause lingered like a final note held in suspension—one that resonated not just through the Rainbow Room, but across the city and the hearts of everyone present. The Manhattan School of Music had once again reminded us of the extraordinary power of education, artistry, and community. And as the stars glittered over Manhattan, the School’s legacy shone even brighter.

MY NEW YORK STORY KELLY KELLZ

rom Rodney Dangerfield to Andrew “Dice” Clay to George Carlin and everyone in between, I’ve met a ton of comedians in my time. They all have their own “New York moments.” But occasionally, I meet someone whose story isn’t just entertaining, but also inspires. Kelly Kellz is one of those people. The moment I sat down with the Atlanta-based comedian, I knew we were in for laugh-laden roller coaster ride of memories.

Kelly Kellz’ time in New York wasn’t a visitor. She wasn’t just here to do a show or two. She lived New York. She breathed it. Our fair city transformed the Milwaukee native into this wildly popular comic we see today. When I asked her about how she got started in the city, she told me, “I hit the ground running. I was literally performing one to five times a day—small bars, open mics, wherever I could get stage time.

Then came the big clubs, like Salsa Con Fuego.”

She took in every part of the city with wide-eyed wonder and wide-open arms. “At first though I did the tourist thing,” she said with a laugh. “Statue of Liberty? Check. Junior’s Cheesecake?

Check—and yes, I had seconds. Sal’s corned beef? Changed my life.”

But as we all know, the true New York experience comes with unexpected lessons. One of Kelly’s first accommodations was through a sorority sister who offered her a place to stay. “She swore it would save me money on hotels,” Kelly recalled. “What she didn’t mention? She lived in Far Rockaway. By the time I got into the city every day, I felt like I’d flown in from another state.” Still, she doesn’t regret it.

“It added to the story. And that’s what this city does—it gives you stories you’ll be telling for the rest of your life.”

Eventually, she made her way to Mount Vernon. “Technically not one of the five boroughs,” she admitted, “but baby, we were close to the 5 train, and that’s what really matters.” It was there, on the streets and sidewalks of New York’s northern border, that she fell in love with one of the city’s greatest culinary traditions: the food truck.

“I had never eaten off a food truck before,” she said. “But New York food trucks? They’re different. They’re spiritual. The halal food especially?

Life-changing. I still dream about it

I was eager to learn what her big “a-ha” moment was. “It was the night that I was booked at Caroline’s on Broadway,” she said as if she were talking about the Holy Grail in a Catholic church.

For comics, Caroline’s was more than a venue. It was a rite of passage. And Kelly didn’t just perform there—she hosted a sold-out show with none other than the legendary Dick Gregory. “Yes, that Dick Gregory,” she laughed, though there was a reverence in her voice when she said his name. “Sitting with him backstage, hearing his stories, soaking in his presence—it was life-changing. He spoke with so much purpose. That night, I realized I wasn’t just working a job. I was answering a calling.”

That moment alone could define a New York story. But with Kelly, it was only the beginning.

As Kelly shared these stories with me, I couldn’t help but notice how she spoke about New York. Not with nostalgia, but with gratitude. This wasn’t just a pit stop in her career. It was a proving ground. A place that demanded everything from her and gave her more than she could’ve imagined in return.

“New York wasn’t just a city to me,” she said, leaning in. “It taught me how to push past my limits. I found out who I was supposed to be on those stages. I found my voice. And I found the courage to use it.”

New York doesn’t just build careers—it builds people. And in the case of Kelly Kellz, it built a powerhouse. A woman who knows exactly who she is; not just funny—but fearless. And that’s what makes this city magical. It doesn’t just change your address. It changes your life.

THE FINAL WORD NEW YORK: WHAT’S YOUR DREAM?

n the 1990 blockbuster, Pretty Woman, the film closes with a man walking across the street under the fire escape that Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) climbs to profess his love for Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts), saying, “Welcome to Hollywood. What’s Your Dream? Everybody comes here.

This is Hollywood, land of dreams…” To be honest, it is one of my favorite pop culture references because, frankly, that is exactly what New York has always been; the place where dreams are made, where entrepreneurs come to succeed.

Think about it – movies and music in pop culture are the perfect historical landmarks for the pulse of the time periods in which they come from. And throughout modern history, New York has always been portrayed as the land of opportunity. After all, where do you think the phrase, “If I can make it there, I can make it anywhere” comes from?

Yes, it was popularized by Frank Sinatra in the 1980 song New York, New York. But it refers to the idea that New York City is one of the toughest, most competitive, and most demanding places in the world—whether in business, the arts, or personal ambition. There is a reason why it is played at Yankee Stadium when the team wins during baseball season.

Remember, for centuries New York has served as the launching pad for some of the most successful businesses in history including American Express, Estee Lauder, Tiffany & Co, Calvin Klein and so many more. Since the days our fair city was called New Amsterdam, people from across the globe have sought to launch their wildest entrepreneurial endeavors in the five boroughs. Even in today’s crazy rollercoaster ride of cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence, some of the most powerful players in those sectors got their start in New York. And they all started with a dream. Isn’t that part of what being an entrepreneur is?

You have to be tough as nails to succeed here. Some would say ruthless. And what you achieve in New York is likely adaptable to virtually anywhere in the world. Now yes, much of what I am referring to is how you execute your approach to business, and what business philosophy it is rooted in. In this case, I prefer to think more in respect of our cover interview, Kevin O’Leary. Yes, he is famous for being a shark. But he is also known for being fiercely loyal and dedicated to entrepreneurs who prove themselves.

Those who work their asses off and fight for every dollar they earn. He is, after all, a capitalist – one of the smartest and most talented on our planet. Trust me when I tell you to heed his advice and learn from, to reference Star Wars, the Jedi Master of entrepreneurs.

And since we are talking Mr. Wonderful, I have to reference the thing that made him a household name, Shark Tank: a show that is produced in Culver City, California; or, essentially, the idea of Hollywood. It used to be that anything “tinsel” related came out of that area. Well, that hasn’t been true in a long time. New York surpassed Los Angeles as a focal point for film and television development ages ago.

And, despite the recent hangover effect of the pandemic’s geo-shift of residency and commerce, people are starting to return to the city. Not offices mind you, but the city itself.

That spells a positive move for all the aforementioned sectors from both a commercial and consumer point of view. Though whether that trend continues largely depends on both this year’s mayoral and next year’s gubernatorial elections given the unpopular figures currently in office, and their policies that have shaped post-pandemic life in what is now the most expensive city in the US to live in. So that poses the question; is there a possibility that New York won’t be the land of dreams anymore?

Is it dead or dying?

THE FINAL WORD This city has been considered “dead” so many times over the last three centuries, it may as well be a vampire. Yet New York keeps coming back – and delivering the very outcome those seek who are bold enough to dream and pursue them. In other words, New York is the land of dreams.

You just have to understand how to work for it and never give up. Be that entrepreneur that Kevin O’Leary wants to make a deal with. After all, isn’t that a dream for so many?
