For this issue we met with three fabulous people who make this world a better place. What we found with these individuals is that they love their work with a passion. Mindie Barnett, a PR executive, explains how she makes it all work— effortlessly. Businesswoman, speaker, and mom are just a few of her titles. But she does it all with grace and elegance. ow does a strong woman navigate work, employee relationships, and life in a world that still feels uncomfortable with strong women?

For Mindie Barnett, the keyword is boundaries. She has learned you don’t need to always say yes to everyone and everything to be successful. Instead, the word “no” is part of her vocabulary, and she feels resting and recharging allow her to be at 100 percent instead of exhausted.

Mindie Barnett is the CEO & Founder of MB and Associates Public Relations, a full-service public relations firm specializing in medical, law, hospitality, beauty, professional, lifestyle, home décor, and non-profit clients, among others. As a PR professional, Mindie focuses on helping businesses penetrate targeted markets and attain high visibility by garnering positive buzz and media attention. More importantly, however, she measures her success according to her impact on driving her clients’ businesses forward. Before we dig in, our readers would like to get to know you a bit more. Can you tell us a bit about your childhood backstory?

I grew up in a suburb of Philadelphia, in the quaint town of Medford, New Jersey. I have one sibling, my sister, Carolyn, who is 4-years younger than me, and we are still close with my parents today. I grew up with solid role models from my parents and quickly learned the importance of setting goals and learning from mistakes.

I was always a fan of the stage and engaged in singing, dancing, acting, and modeling throughout my childhood and into high school. In addition, I was a cheerleader throughout high school and into college and competed in Miss America’s preliminary pageants.

Tell us what led you to this TV broadcast career path.

I’ve always loved the stage and was also an avid writer my entire life. I loved English, creative writing and had a passion for social studies and current events. So, I combined all three and turned it into a career!

Are there any memorable moments that happened to you during your broadcast career?

Too many to mention. I loved meeting the viewers, and I enjoyed being an intricate part of the communities. I covered

9/11 and was at Ground Zero on 9/12; while a reporter at News 12 New Jersey, I did an undercover story about the Bloods and the Crips, when they were coming to the forefront, with the Paterson, New Jersey police, and more. However, getting to know the subjects of the stories touched me the most. When the camera was off, it was just me and the subject. Being able to connect with them and impact their lives in some small way made me most proud—for instance, putting someone in touch with a resource who just lost her home in a fire or helping a mother who was distraught over a crime against her child.

After your broadcast career, you transitioned into public relations. How did it happen?

After spending ten years in television news, I decided I wanted more than just an amazing professional life. I also wanted to be closer to home and my parents, so I left the field and took a job working at a public relations firm in Philadelphia.

Unfortunately, it was not a fit, and out of default and to make ends meet, I launched MB and Associates. It was supposed to be temporary, but now two office locations later and 18-plus years in the industry, we are one of the most sought-after media strategists in the country. We represent business leaders from various sectors, including technology, medicine, law, retail, beauty, authors, and more. We work with media all over the US with a presence in New York City and Philadelphia and Los Angeles on the horizon soon.

Which three traits do you think were most instrumental to your success?

My ability to persevere, dedication, and drive are attributed to my career success, personal survival, and a new journey into graduate school while running a business, launching a book, and being a present and active single mom to two children.

Let’s now jump to the primary focus of our interview: Your new book, You Don’t Need To Be A Bitch To Be A Boss, and how society still feels uncomfortable with strong women. Why do you think this is so?

I think much of society still feels women should remain in the background, and as a result, many women attempt to combat this issue by presenting to be a bitch. But that is not only unnecessary to get ahead; it’s detrimental. Instead, women should embrace their femininity and (like men) lead with empathy and a sense of warmth and care.

That doesn’t make us less-than nor weak. It makes us human.

It makes us better respected in the boardroom. I believe that it’s still an evolving phenomenon with women active in the workforce. But we are here to stay. So, we need to get used to putting our best face forward.

Share a story from your own experience that illustrates this idea?

She made every shoot we executed difficult, continually tried to turn teamwork into a competition, and more. Again, I suspect because that was her methodology. However, I do not think she was solely acting in such a maladaptive way towards me. Instead, that was how she felt she needed to behave to earn respect among her peers and her clients, which was an unfortunate display and counterproductive.

What should a powerful woman do when others feel uneasy around her?

Try and look at the picture from their point of view to best serve the situation. If you can look at a scene from another’s perspective (by enacting empathy), you will be able to surpass most complexities. Of course, you can’t change who you are, nor should you, but you can try and be openminded to others’ opinions and perspectives.

What do we need to do to change the unease around powerful women?

We need to look at women as people. We need to look at other ethnicities in the same way. We are all human beings.

We are all equal and different simultaneously, and that’s what makes us all beautiful.

In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges faced by women leaders?

The biggest challenge a woman faces in the workplace is another woman! Women are their own worst enemies, and that notion and ways to combat it is the premise of my book.

One of the tips I share is to look at another as inspiration, not competition. The only person you should compete with is who you see in the mirror. →

About four years ago, for assorted reasons, a New York City PR firm hired me to spearhead the consumer component of her client’s public relations campaign. The client was a plastic surgeon from the Upper East Side, and aesthetic medicine is genuinely my specialty in the medical realm. As a result, I was able to secure a tremendous amount of press for this practice, and my colleague who hired me was pleased but always attempted to show her “muscles” whenever possible.

Let’s now shift our discussion to a slightly different direction. This is a question that everyone with a job must contend with. Was it challenging to fit your personal and family life into your business and career?

It’s a constant struggle! My kids are now 10 and 13, and while they’re now self-sufficient and can be left alone at home on a snow day, while I head to the office, they have a host of other items on my to-do list now: sports schedules, social schedules, grueling schoolwork. So, I try to be the best mom, publicist, and entrepreneur I can be and give myself a break. Some days may mean leaning in more on the mom side. Other days may demand a more extended day at the office or on-site at a shoot. More recently, it has included fitting in a book tour. But in the end, it magically all seems to balance out.

What tipping point helped you achieve a greater balance or equilibrium between your work life and personal life?

I honestly do not think I have one. My scale is presently much heavier on the work-life side of the scale. Running my business, authoring books, keynote speaking, appearing at book signings, and hosting my podcast The Race for the Ring eat up most of my time these days. Then maintaining a full-time graduate school course schedule at Pepperdine University (MS in clinical psychology in 2024) completes the picture. I don’t have a lot of time for socializing. I do have amazing friends and, of course, my kids are at the top of the heap, but I’m anxious to reevaluate my daily calendar in a few years and make much more time for me.

How much of an emphasis do you place on your appearance? Do you see beauty as superficial, or is it something that has inherent value for a leader in a public context?

Appearance and image are crucial in leadership and life. I don’t believe a woman needs to be a super model but taking pride in one’s appearance and presentation speaks volumes.

This is such an appropriate question for me personally! I turned 48 on January 30th and have spent more time in the morning assessing my changing appearance. I’ve gotten a bit curvier than I used to be, and I can see that my OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE

face has aged over the last five or so years when I look back at photos.

I think it’s a little sad to me as I have always had that pressure to look “good” in my TV career and throughout life. But my mind is more enriched from experiences, education, and life. I think while my face may not be as beautiful as it was when I was 28 or even 38, my mind is much more so and, in the end, that has more weight in my world.

I’ll always take care of myself, my skin, workout and more, but know that what’s inside—my inner beauty—far outshines what I see in my reflection.

How is this similar or different for men?

Most women think men don’t get old, they become distinguished, but they get old! Representing plastic surgeons, I see many men in the waiting rooms! Men feel pressure to look young to maintain a competitive edge, especially in tech, where the younger folks are usually the ones in the corner offices. In that industry, especially, the younger you are, the smarter you are and the more sought after you become.

Lastly, what are the five things you need to thrive and succeed as a powerful woman?

Sleep I cannot function or even pretend to be smart if I don’t get at least 8 hours of sleep at night.

Exercise Even if it’s just taking a 30-minute walk, I need to move my body every day. I love to spin, do barre, and hot yoga and I need to work out for my health and mental sanity. It helps me focus on the day ahead.

Sounding boards This could be a best friend (I am blessed to have many!), my mom or dad, or a colleague; I need to have dialogue to collaborate, to share insights, and to connect each day.

Coffee I must have a steamy latte each morning when I rise and another on my way to the office, or I am an outright mess.

Affirmation I need to feel love every day. Some examples of this include the love I get from hugging my kids, squeezing my dogs, having an uplifting talk with a client or friend that’s supportive and positive. I crave connection and cannot survive without it—even for a day.

He soon realized brands did not have enough of a holistic, genuine way to talk to consumers, nor a way for marketers to interpret their true sentiments. A born “connector” whose friendliness, curiosity, and interest in hearing from others has guided much of his career, Krasinski worked to develop a new solution to offer marketers a way to give consumers more of a say in how they are marketed. Working with his colleague Lynne Lipinski, he launched a firm called the Epicenter Experience charged with this very mandate. Now, after years of development, they are debuting The People Platform, a new tool that fills this promise.

GIVING CONSUMERS A VOICE

“The People Platform is disruptive technology that shifts power back to consumers while giving marketers a deeper understanding of their consumers’ habits through a realtime experience,” Krasinski said. “This is about building trust between people and brands and giving consumers more influence over their spending and purchases. Giving them the most important voice makes sense. The People Platform is a new stage and microphone for people to share experiences and information in an effective and more valuable way.”

It’s just one of the tools Krasinski envisions. And he envisions them in a tranquil setting he’s developed for big thinkers just like himself. The born entrepreneur purchased and renovated a picturesque property he’s branded The Farmhouse, where he hopes to host retreats, salons, sabbaticals, and other opportunities for emerging leaders to dream and draw out creativity, innovation, and thoughts. The home, situated on a beautiful lake in Plymouth, MA., includes spacious meeting spaces, five suites for guests, chef ’s kitchen, tavern, pool deck and cabana, a conversation porch, and outdoor spaces.

“I always imagined creating a physical place, surrounded by nature, where all people would feel at home, connect through face-to-face interaction, and be inspired to be vulnerable enough to discover their purpose,” he says.

“My interactions inspire the Farmhouse with so many unique and interesting people around the world and the creative collaborations to lead change.”

Tell us about your platform.

Epicenter Experience believes that people are the epicenter. Why is this good for people?

People have an understanding and a valuable perspective based on their daily interactions with our world. What did you find when developing this platform?

We saw that marketers had been focused on mass-advertising approaches for the most part. In fact, 60 percent of marketers told us they do not have the tools and processes to connect with consumers directly. In the Experience Economy era that we live in, consumers expect a tailored, relevant experience with the brands and companies they interface with daily. Marketers needed a solution to understand consumer behavior with more specificity and reach their customers more personally and targeted.

What was your inspiration?

I have always been fascinated by people and how they make decisions, and why a particular product becomes a fad or trend. I care deeply about people as human beings. So, I set a goal for myself early on in my life to try to meet everyone in the world. Yes, it was a tall order; however, in addition to being 6’9”, which wasn’t enough, my love for technology as an enabler to create solutions that allow people to take control of their world and care for others in tangible ways.

Why start The Farmhouse?

I created it to bring people together to connect, collaborate, create, and communicate to develop solutions facing all people. The Farmhouse was designed to be inviting, inspiring, and combined with nature so people can gather to lead change in our world. Throughout my professional career, I have connected with people to design and create technology solutions to make their lives easier and more valuable. The many connections I’ve made with creators worldwide helped me realize that, while technology is a wonderful way to connect people, there is no substitute for face-to-face interactions.

Your brother, actor John Krasinski, did a series of good news reports during COVID. Does this desire to share and implement positivity run in the family?

Caring and positivity are fundamental to my approach to life. Both John and I were raised with a core family value of caring for everyone. My dad was a doctor, and his passion in life was caring for his patients and their families. He taught us early on that we had received such talents as people, and we should share those with others to bring hope and inspiration to others. This indeed stayed with me. In 2016 I launched the company to share my talents in technology to commit to caring for others. In 2020, John decided to share his talents as an actor and launched Some Good News, so Dad’s teachings had a lasting impact on him.

AN INTERVIEW WITH HARRY BENSON 60+ YEARS OF LEGENDARY WORK

midst the drama of WWII with bombs dropping overhead on his Glasgow birthplace, Harry Benson somehow, someway managed an avoid the turmoil. He took to photography and, in 1946, sold his first photo to a local publication. Years passed, and while still honing his skills Harry made another vital decision.

The young photographer’s excitement to pursue a career prompted him to go to Fleet Street and the London Daily Express. There he became a staff photographer where one day he received an assignment to photograph The Beatles’ first tour of Paris, ending in the USA. It was 1964. For more than 60 years, Harry has cataloged celebrity portraits contracted by top magazines in the country. During the time, he received exclusive access to Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch, Joe Namath’s bachelor pad, and Truman Capote’s masked ball.

His talents have also taken him to aim his lens on the Washington, DC crowd and photographed every US president from Dwight D. Eisenhower to Joe Biden, the erection and fall of the Berlin Wall, and the 1960s Civil Rights marches and the pro and anti-Vietnam riots. And, yes, there were times he feared for his life on the job, most notably documenting the Troubles in Northern Ireland. But it’s when he caught the horror on Ethel Kennedy’s face in the Ambassador Hotel after her husband, Senator Robert Kennedy, was assassinated that America’s heart skipped a beat.

Harry has photographed an amazing range of subjects, including portraits of significant figures, including Sir Winston Churchill, HRH Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Diana, Andy Warhol, Mohammed Ali, Dr. Martin Luther King, and entertainers The Rolling Stones, The Who, Greta Garbo, Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, Jack Nicholson, Amy Winehouse, and Brad Pitt. Benson covered wars in the Gulf, Bosnia, Afghanistan, and the list goes on.

THE MAKING OF A GREAT PHOTO

This incredibly talented photographer has taken some of the most extraordinary images of living history. He’s come face to face with more great people and events than anyone today. Quite simply, he has had this uncanny instinct for what makes a great photograph.

The stories of his fans and former subjects are documented in Harry Benson: Shoot First (HULU).

Dan Rather, Alec Baldwin, Sharon Stone, Andre Leon Talley, and Ralph Lauren, among others, share their stories on the man with the lens. It’s a profile of the man behind many images which have become iconic—and can be viewed at New York’s StaleyWise Gallery.

The master lensman has also been honored and awarded countless times during his career. The most notable in 2009, when he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Then in 2017, the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Center of Photography in New York.

Now with many best-selling books to his credit, the 92-year-old is unyielding in his beliefs when it comes to photography. He and his business partner-wife, Gigi, were more than welcoming when photographer Neil Tandy and I met at their apartment. By the end, Harry Benson was holding open the door to the elevator, continuing with his stories.

What inspired you to turn to photography as a career?

Definitely growing up in wartime Scotland and listening to Churchill’s magnificent speeches as we huddled around the radio. It was first-hand drama as Glasgow was bombed each night.

However much your subjects like you, why have you always kept your distance?

I was there to photograph and to inform. I was not there to become best friends with the subject and do their bidding. That would make me their publicist—not a photojournalist. With My father was on home-guard duty the night Rudolph Hess bailed out that said, I’ve always enjoyed meeting people and learning of his plane over Glasgow and was captured, saying he wanted to make about them before photographing them. And, happily, I can’t peace between Germany and Great Britain. I remember it so well. That’s remember anyone turning me down for a second take. when I realized I wanted to be there at the center of what was happening, not on the edge looking in. It was exciting.

How did you interact with celebrity publicists during that period?

Tell us what it was like working on Fleet Street.

London’s Fleet Street was great fun and extremely competitive. There were I’ve always tried to work with publicists in a business-like 8 or 9 daily newspapers. You were only as good as your last exclusive, and fashion, although they are very controlling today. Their power I soon wanted to beat them all. Is that day in June still fresh in your mind?

Absolutely. Senator Kennedy had just won the California Democratic primary and was at the podium of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles when he said, “It’s on to Chicago and let’s win there.” When Kennedy started toward the kitchen, I followed, thinking it was the quickest way out of the crowded room. Then I heard a girl scream. I knew we had stepped out of happiness into hell. I pushed my way forward and stood up on the kitchen counter. It was absolute chaos, screaming, pushing, complete bedlam. Five other people were shot around me. As I finished a roll of film, I stuffed it in my sock, so that if the police demanded it, I would give them only the roll currently in my camera. I called the FBI afterward to see if they would like to see my film, but no one ever returned my call.

One of your famous photographs is Greta Garbo swimming at a public beach. Did you ever think you crossed the line and invaded a celebrity’s privacy?

No, I didn’t trespass. She was on a public beach and didn’t even know I was there. I didn’t disturb her holiday, nor did I chase after her.

The Back Story: I was having dinner at a hotel in Antigua, and at the next table was Greta Garbo The owner of the hotel whispered to me who she was and said she was staying at the hotel. The next day I went boating with friends when Garbo just came floating nearby and I photographed her and I’m glad I had the opportunity to do so. I remember my mother and father talking about the Great Garbo, the beauty who wanted to be alone and there she was in front of me.

Just think, without publicity, a celebrity or politician would not be famous. They can’t turn it off and on whenever they please.

One fascinating public figure you befriended was Michael Jackson. You’ve visited his Neverland Ranch, to which no one was allowed access. How did you gain his trust?

Michael liked the stories I was doing for LIFE magazine and the fact that I wasn’t in awe of him. I was respectful, which is how I approached each story.

We first met in Colorado in 1984. I was wearing a Scottish tweed hacking jacket. Michael commented on it, so I gave it to him. He was delighted and put it on and twirled around for the camera. He realized I was not there to debunk him but to document his lifestyle and career for the fans who idolized him.

Why do you think some of your best images are those that “just happened?”

Spontaneous photographs to me, ones that cannot be repeated, are what I’ve always looked for. That’s why I liked photographing in a person’s environment rather than in a studio. Taking away the veneer of celebrity, of a controlled look, is key. I wanted the subject to be themselves.

Michael was easy to photograph because he was so talented. If a photogenic subject dances in front of your camera wearing a glittering costume, it eases the pressure to get a good photograph.

I want to take a picture that will make you stop and look, not skip or turn the page of the magazine.

At Neverland, I was told we had to stay outside, so we started in the flower-filled garden and moved on to the Ferris wheel and go-carts. When the publicist left, I asked Michael if we could go inside as I needed a cover for LIFE and several inside pages to fill. Michael said all right in his very soft voice, and in we went.

He showed me his great house and I started photographing. We started in the living room and moved upstairs to the bedroom. I always like to photograph people in their bedrooms; it’s the most private room in the house.

What did you prefer during your career: hardcore photojournalism or portrait?

I would have to say photojournalism. Taking a photograph that defines a bit of history—one that cannot happen again.

What has been your number one motivation during the years?

My motivation was certainly never money or fame. You might say it has been curiosity. You might also say it was a competitiveness and wanting to be at the center of what was happening in the world and always striving to get the best photograph that day.

BOB RICHARDS FROM SPREADSHEET TO HARDCOVER

taut WWII thriller with a surprise setting is at the heart of Bob Richards’ new novel Triangle of Treason, which reveals the strategic importance of Bermuda for the Allies during the war.

The book’s page-turning stories of high stakes espionage—its main character is a retired British Captain turned Hitler spy—provides winter escapism and education.

“Instead of writing a boring history book that hardly anybody would read, I thought, why not wrap an exciting novel around that history?” Richards says.

“Triangle of Treason is the result of that intention.

Inspired by the likes of Ken Follet—my literary hero—the book is more than just a spy thriller. It is a fascinating and entertaining read embedded in military and geopolitical history.”

And there’s no one better to tell it than author Richards, a native of Bermuda who rose to become its Minister of Finance. He grew up during segregation and witnessed its demise, transforming into a strategic military outpost. Richards helped usher in its emergence as a financial pivot in the middle of the Atlantic. All this gave him unique, often privileged insight into Bermuda’s rich past. Now, trading a spreadsheet for a hardcover, he proves he knows the formula for crafting a compelling story as well.

What inspired you to write this WWII thriller?

I grew up taking the ferry to and from school.

Hence, my love of boats. After that era passed, I started researching them for a book. I eventually concluded that nobody wanted to read a boring book about old ferryboats. Also, I grew up hearing endless stories from my parents about the war. So, I melded these two elements into a fictional tale during that era involving my favorite subjects: ferries, submarines, and WWII history.

Many people don’t know about how integral Bermuda was to WWII. How vital was the island?

Most people think the US bases here were part of the Lend-Lease Act between the US and UK. That’s not true, at least for the Naval seaplane base in my book. In 1938-39, US officials observed the deteriorating situation in Europe and asked the question, “What if Britain falls. How would it affect us?” One look at the map highlighted that it would be intolerable to have a Nazi-controlled Bermuda.

So, in 1939. before war was declared in Europe, the US began arrangements for a seaplane base in Bermuda. They identified Morgan’s Island as an ideal spot, but the US Neutrality Act forbade a military lease to be established with a foreign power that was at war. Morgan’s island was privately owned, and the papers were signed by the Bermudian owner who was living in New York, but it would not be legal until Bermuda stamp duty was paid. So, the lawyer had to fly back to Bermuda to get the agreement stamped. He did so, and three days later, Britain declared war against Germany OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE

How else was Bermuda involved in WWII and fighting the Axis powers?

All German forces used the Enigma, but their navy’s encryption was robust and challenging to break. That’s why the capture of U-Boats was so critically important.

Bermuda played a role in one actual life capture. In 1944, the US Navy captured U-505 in the mid-Atlantic with its Enigma and intact codebooks. U-505 was towed to Bermuda and hidden from the world for the remainder of the war. U-505 is now on display at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Your reference to local flavors in Triangle of Treason includes popular bars, restaurants, and meetings spots. Was this intentional? What do you think this gives the story?

Authenticity! There is nothing in this story that couldn’t have happened. Today, you can visit Bermuda and trace Hooks and Becky Jones, Swordfish, and Captain Grant’s footsteps.

What do you hope readers will take away from your novel after reading Triangle of Treason?

I hope the takeaway is how unique Bermuda is, being shaped from inception back in the 1600s and by the intersection of the three elements. Namely the British, the American, and the Caribbean. Hence the Triangle.

Despite our miniature size, we have played critical roles in the transatlantic geopolitical rivalries over the centuries.

Our location is our natural resource. The other takeaway is that I hope people can sense how amazingly beautiful my island is. The truth is, no words can describe what I have the privilege to see every day.

Do you have plans to write more WWII thrillers? What fascinates you most about this period?

The plan is to write two more novels. One is about Bermuda’s pivotal role in the Cold War; the other is our crucial role in America’s efforts to put a man on the moon (NASA). What fascinates me most about WWII is that it may have been the last war where the line between the good guys and the bad guys was so clear.

Now the latest Genesis to drive into the record books is the 2022 GV70, the brand’s new take on a luxury compact SUV (we loved the larger GV80, released in 2021), which recently was awarded MotorTrend magazine’s prestigious SUV of the Year prize. As we took it through its paces driving throughout Manhattan and into Connecticut, it didn’t take long to agree that the GV70 is a sporty ride that delivers on all fronts.

Starting at $41,000, the base model has a 2.5T engine (a 2.5-liter engine with a turbocharger), while the top-of-the-line version has a 3.5T twin-turbo V6 for about $57,600; impressive pricing that beats other luxury offerings in its class. The just-completed Laura Gonzales design incorporates classic and contemporary fabric-covered walls, hand-crafted furnishings, and fine accessories. The 5000-square foot Spa Guerlain includes an indoor swimming pool.

We ate at classic, trendy, Michelin-star restaurants, bistros, brasseries, and museum cafés. We recommend the following: Aux Lyonnais Alain Ducasse—who heads 19 Michelin-star restaurants upgrades the traditional Bouchon, famed for silk worker-lunches in Lyon. Along with a famous “workers-priced” meal, there are unique specialties: escargots in puff pastry, Volaille de Bresse (chicken), and roasted plums.

Ducasse-sur-Seine This is a super-special, dress-up dinner (or lunch) with paired wines onboard an exclusive yacht that cruises the Seine for 2.5 hours; there’s time between the five courses to photograph the lighted cityscape from the deck.

L’Écrin The exquisite Hôtel de Crillon houses a tiny, 24-seat restaurant in a jewel box-like salon. First, the Maitre d’ asks guests about food preferences; then, Michelin-starred Chef Christopher Hache prepares the magnificent multi-course meal with paired wines, accordingly.

Le Gabriel This memorable multi-course lunch takes place within La Reserve, a small, elite hotel. Its gastronomic restaurant, within an embossed leather-lined salon (chairs have shelves that slide out to perch a purse!) is where two-star Michelin chef Jérôme Banctel serves his best!

Le Tout-Paris We scored a table at 10 pm on a Sunday at the oh-sopopular, all-day brasserie on the 7th floor at the new Cheval Blanc Hotel. After appetizers, early evening, we shared an excellent— generously-sized—steak and Pont Neuf fries and admired views over the Seine, from Notre Dame to the Eiffel Tower.

Museum Cafés Parisian museums offer casual, albeit destination, dining where we ate onion soup, pozza or pasta and really enjoyed Loulou, a chic Mediterranean café inside Musée des Arts Décoratifs, and the brasserie, Café Campana, at the Musée d’Orsay.

PANAMA’S PARADISE A LUSH PRIVATE ISLAND ESCAPE

inter is upon us and as the cold winds blow off the Hudson River and down the neck of your coat, consider the alternative. A Panamanian private island called Isla Palenque. In just about five hours from New York, you can be sitting on a warm beach, sipping a rum drink and soaking up the sunshine in seclusion.

You’ll fly in and out of Panama City, a vibrant place with much to see and do, so plan time on your trip there. We booked a city tour with Truly Panama on our way back from Isla Palenque and discovered a fantastic local eatery called La Tapa del Coco. That’s where chef-owner Isaac Villaverde whips up his special Afro-Panamanian fare in a casual, welcoming setting.

Try the shrimp curry or have a few empanadas, all washed down with Tiny Winey (their house craft beer) or a luscious coconut mojito.

We loved visiting the Casco Viejo, one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods going through a recent revitalization.

It’s full of old buildings (like the Iglesia de San Jose, built in the 1670s), many of which are renovated and housing incredible restaurants and beautiful galleries. Look for the Karavan Gallery, which is filled with spectacular works from local artists—check out the colorful toucans created in Jaqué; they are incredible! Finally, make time to head over to Panama Viejo and the UNESCO World Heritage archeological site. Founded in 1519, this is a fascinating place to learn about colonialism in the New World.

YOUR PRIVATE ISLAND

To get to Isla Palenque, you’ll take a second quick flight to David (heading into the more rural part of Panama, heading west toward the Costa Rican border on the Pacific side). From there, the island’s friendly crew will drive you to Boca Chica port, where a boat ride across the Gulf of Chiriqui delivers you to the tropical paradise that is Isla Palenque Resort.

With just eight secluded beachfront bungalows, a villa estate (bring the whole family and have a completely private experience) and assorted deserted beaches to claim as your own for a day, this exclusive island truly is the ultimate escape. Think of a welcoming but never intrusive staff, delicious meals, and lots of activities (or none) to fill your days and nights.

You won’t see migrating whales in the winter months, but humpbacks, orcas, and pilot whales are in the nearby protected waters of Chiriqui National Marine Park from May to November, which is a quick boat trip from the island. Dolphins frolic in the waves, too, and you might see a sea turtle meander by as well. In addition, there are unique snorkeling spots to visit and kayaks or stand-up boards to paddle out into the all-year-round warm waters.

Isla Palenque is a sustainable resort, so expect to find all-organic food and products as well as ecologically sound construction techniques used in all the structures. It all adds up to a place that feels integrated into the rainforest that surrounds it; slip down the palm-lined path from your bungalow to the ocean, and you’ll understand what we mean.

Don’t miss getting into the island’s rainforest, where remnants of ancient civilizations remain. Follow Jose Chiavarria, the resort’s experience coordinator, into the jungle, where he’ll point out everything from archeological digs to termite mounds and regale you with tales of long-ago times. Or learn to forage for local fruits and herbs and take a fishing lesson and bring in a catch for dinner.

Evenings bring salsa dance classes, rum tasting interludes, and leisurely dining either at your villa, on the beach, or in the lovely communal palapa. Be sure to taste the little bread rolls that come with every meal. They are decadently delicious, and don’t miss the daily ceviche and tiradito offerings, for you will never have fresher fish.

Whatever your pleasure, Isla Palenque aims to please—and usually succeeds. It’s a magical place that reminds us of simpler times, especially when you slip into your outdoor bathtub, take a soak and watch a tiny lizard slither by, listen to the birds singing and laugh at the howler monkeys high in the treetops letting out their thunderous yells. Then, you’ll know for sure that you’re not in the big city anymore!

As the Arctic winds reach New York City streets with chilly glances, more than ever it is time to head to South Florida. Travelers, of course, must keep aware of the latest from the Omicron saga, but since Florida has generally taken the mask mandates with the same caution that they take a forecast of snow, pragmatic restrictions should suffice to ensure a safe and pleasing vacation.

On the streets of Miami, however, the Cuban influences, as well as most other ethnicities, paint the walls and dinner plates with a cornucopia of color, fabrics and textures.

A trip to the constellation of Miami, Brickell and Wynwood will provide both sustenance for the luxurious indulgences for the traveler’s soul; after a second year of a pandemic, don’t we all deserve it? The restaurants of Miami, the shopping in Brickell, and the art scene of Wynwood are the perfect pairing for a memorable trip along this South Florida journey.

STAY

Novotel Miami Brickell offers both comfort and luxury wrapped in a decor that radiates with essential Miami. After Accor’s acquisition of Atton Hotels in 2018, the transition into Novotel has become a tale of survival and rebirth.

EAT

Among the endless places to eat in Miami, Fugato which is technically in Coral Gables, would be a wise choice.

For connoisseurs of risotto, this is the crown jewel. The porcini risotto bursts with flavor and compliments any of the other dishes. Highlights include boneless short ribs, lobster ravioli, chevre croquettes, and sugarcrusted salmon. The service is impeccable and the ambiance serene and refined.

Spanglish is a Miami dining experience that is not to be missed. The evening begins with some of the most unique signature cocktails, such as a Paparazzi, made with dill infused tequila, passion and lime juices, plus other surprises, and served in a zoom camera lens (yes, you heard correctly). Diners can start the meal off with Queso ‘e Cabra, local savory goat cheese Pana Cotta, encrusted in a dark rum and pineapple gelee. The Delmonico Ribeye for 2 is a carnivore’s delight, served with charred purple sweet potato and seared onions.

Sweeten the palate with a dessert of homemade ice cream or sorbet.

Osteria Morini is a short walk from the Miami Botanical Gardens and the impressive Holocaust Memorial. The restaurant has a casual and welcoming vibe, but the food is seriously gourmet. Located in the Kimpton Hotel Palomar, Osteria Morini offers a lunch, brunch and dinner menu that is rich with Italian specialties prepared with great attention to distinct flavor. Many dishes burst with the flavor of rosemary, parmesan cheese and truffles. The rigatoni with wild mushrooms, rosemary and truffles will remain in one’s flavorful scrapbook for a long time.

Brickell Here you will find a project that began twenty years ago and revived over the past five.

• Brickell City Centre is central to the commercial growth of the area. This open-air mall offers shoppers an aesthetic conducive to the ideal customer experience. The nine-acre complex houses Saks Fifth Avenue, luxury shops, residential towers and a hotel. The retail area is easily accessible on the third floor via the Eighth street Metromover, a fully autonomous train that stops at twenty stations throughout its route. The design of the City Centre allows light to filter in from all angles, like a giant ribcage enclosing the body of the complex.

Wynwood It started out as a working-class neighborhood connected through industry with the surrounding Design and Garment districts. Just around the time the street art movement was taking hold of the open spaces and the closed consciousnesses of several major cities (1985), neighborhood developer Tony Goldman was attending a conference in Miami, and toured the abandoned art deco buildings of Miami. By the mid-2000s, he was buying abandoned buildings in Wynwood where he saw the potential for the natural progression that happens when artists turn distressed neighborhoods into chic cultural centers.

• Museum of Graffiti is considered “the first museum,” according to their website, “in the world exclusively dedicated to the evolution of the graffiti art form.” Once inside, visitors are met with archival videos, mostly news reports, displaying a panorama of the social resistance to graffiti. Yet, the museum traces the roots of graffiti from the simple tagging of names upon city walls to the complex artistry of some of the world’s most respected graffiti artists. Dr. Heather Dunn, an artist and writer stated, “The museum show displayed an insightful history of the evolution of graffiti writing from the early 1980’s to the present.” Exhibits included photos of subway cars turned into moving canvases, an exhibit on the history of graffiti, a display of the work of FUZI, and much more.

If the Museum of Graffiti offers a guided path through a curated history, the streets of Wynwood constitute a community of street and graffiti artists for whom the visible spaces of the town become an ever-changing canvas of personal and social statements. Be sure to visit Wynwood Walls as well, an outdoor museum of memorable and sizeable street art by many of the big names in the genre.

Besides the convenience of being so close in proximity, the triumvirate of Miami, Brickell and Wynwood offer sights and tastes for all manner of traveler. Pack your walking shoes and prepare yourself for a journey that pleases the eyes and the stomach as you experience chefs who create art upon a plate and artists who create statements upon a wall.

he bucolic borough of Saddle River, New Jersey, is home to actors, athletes, entertainment moguls, internationally recognized CEOs, musicians, entrepreneurs, a past US president, and all who appreciate the privacy and beauty of small-town living. Saddle River residents prioritize privacy and beauty, and that hasn’t changed since my family fell in love with its charm and moved here four decades ago.

Let’s talk about proximity to Manhattan! We are between 15 and 18 miles to the George Washington Bridge. Without traffic, I have been in my theater seat within 30 minutes. To live this lifestyle and have New York City a stone’s throw away is the cherry on top of a fabulous sundae at Serendipity 3.

GETTING TO KNOW SADDLE RIVER

I am a big fan of the renowned and Michelin-starred Saddle River Inn, located in town. It is rustic, charming, and just plain yummy. We also are home to its more casual sister restaurant, The Saddle River Cafe. Within 10 minutes of the center of town, options range from the refined and elegant Esty Street, Varka, and the landmark Ho-Ho-Kus Inn and Tavern to several excellent casual dining options.

During the past two years of the pandemic, local restaurants have been offering delivery, curbside pickup, and very creative (and warm!) outdoor spaces. Many of us have established long-term relationships with the owners as we support each other through this time. That is one of the perks of living in a small-town environment. SADDLE RIVER STATS

We are about one mile wide and three miles long. The picturesque Saddle River runs North to South through town. Several mountain ridges and streams, brooks, ponds, and rolling lawns.

The zoning is a minimum of two acres. However, there are also smaller lots that were subdivided before the two-acre zoning law.

The beauty of Saddle River is in the diversity of the architecture. From a small cottage (between $1 to $2 million) to a significant gated estate (between $5 and $20 million), it’s all here: Hampton’s style, brick manors, stone chateaus, contemporary farmhouses, and traditional ranches and colonials.

AROUND TOWN THE FINANCIAL DISTRICT

he landscape of the Financial District (FiDi), where New York’s history as a city all began has seen many changes. The skyscrapers and canyons of today’s FiDi stand where the tiny Dutch settlement, and later the prime residential enclave of post-Revolutionary New York once flourished.

The narrow alleys of the area are a reminder of the scale of colonial America. However, except for a few fragments of old foundations, not a single building erected during the 40 years of Dutch rule remains. When the British Army withdrew in 1783 after seven years of occupation, the village of New York—which covered ten blocks north from what is now Battery Park—lay almost totally in ruins.

But once New York City pulled itself together and began to push north, the city grew swiftly. Two blocks of low-rise commercial buildings from this early surge of development have survived: the Fraunces Tavern block and Schermerhorn Row. Today, the entire area has been transformed from where cattle once grazed at Bowling Green Park. Now, FiDi features converted condos, bars, restaurants, parks, memorials, and new construction soaring into the sky. HEAD OVER HEELS FOR BROADWAY

rom infatuation to flirtation to seduction and everything in between, New York theater has you and your amour de jour covered. Whether it’s Aladdin and Jasmine canoodling on a flying carpet or “Bobbie baby, Bobbie bubi, Bobbie” driving a trio of persons crazy in Company, Broadway can’t help but emerge as the quintessential come-hither when it comes to passion.

Which is why, in this fiercely romantic month of St. Valentine, I’m sticking to affairs of the heart, exclusively in shows that I love.

ROMANCING THE STAGE With its gorgeous, gothic passion wrapped in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic music, The Phantom of the Opera has been seducing audiences longer than any other show in Broadway history. And while the crashing chandelier may have shed its opening night novelty, it hasn’t lost its power to awe. Many besotted phantoms and spellbinding Christine Daaé’s later, “Music of the Night” is filling the Majestic Theatre with a primary cast now boasting its first AfricanAmerican leading lady, Emilie Kouatchou.

Another production with a Belle Époque backdrop and a Best Musical Tony Award (this one newly minted) is Moulin Rouge! a spectacular mash up of jukebox score, real and fictional characters, eroticism, and true love. Emerging as a physical homage to the landmark Parisian cabaret down to its famous illuminated windmill and red velvet trappings, the show is based on the Baz Luhrman film of the same name. The difference is, here you enter the world of can-can and Toulouse-Lautrec down aisles peppered with flirtatious courtesans in salacious costumes.

C’est magnifique.

Culled from Greek legend, Hadestown’s melding of two mythical love stories has become one of Broadway’s most unique and haunting musicals.

A stylized New Orleans is where a trio Fates and a silken Hermes (André De Shields) set the stage for the musician Orpheus (Reeve Carney) to first meet his beloved Eurydice (Eva Noblezada). Their tale of young love becomes juxtaposed and ultimately entwined with the faltering relationship king of the Underworld, Hades (Patrick Page), and his queen, Persephone (Amber Gray).

The most recent twosome to sing and dance their way into the 2021-2022 season are flimflammer Harold Hill (Hugh Jackman) and Marian (“the librarian”) Paroo (Sutton Foster). This musical comedy dream duo is making the hot-ticket revival of Meredith Willson’s The Music Man soar off the sell-out charts, so keep your eye on the date night prize and book ASAP. Performances begin February 10th at the Winter Garden Theatre.

And speaking of new arrivals, the real-life love story between Tony winner Matthew Broderick and Emmy winner Sarah Jessica Parker will be Page Six fodder as they rev up for their first performance in Neil Simon’s classic comedy, Plaza Suite. A series of one-acts, each set in the same hotel room, have the stars – whose 30th wedding anniversary is May 19th –playing three different couples caught in relationship conundrums ranging from poignant to hilarious. Performances begin February 25th at Broadway’s Hudson Theatre.

ROMANTIC INTERLUDES MARRY ME PG-13 Jennifer Lopez joins up with Colombian singing sensation Maluma in this pop-star romantic comedy about two top singers whose impending onstage nuptials are scuttled when she discovers his cheatin’ heart.

That’s what legendary producer Dick Wolf thought, and the network agreed. So, fans of the crime and punishment show, rejoice! It’s back, with Sam Waterston and Anthony Anderson both returning in their original roles, supported by Jeffrey Donovan, Camryn Manheim and Hugh Dancy.

PAM & TOMMY Hulu If you’re old enough to remember the sex-tape scandal that surrounded then-married couple Pamela Anderson (of Baywatch fame) and Tommy Lee (from Motley Crue), you may not care about this eight-part miniseries that chronicles it from start to finish. But when you see Lily James channeling Pam and Sebastian Stan doing Tommy, together with the crazy twists and turns the story takes, you’ll change your mind and get sucked right in.

REACHER Prime Video Bringing Jack Reacher to the small screen, after the ridiculous Tom Cruise two-film interlude that first brought novelist Lee Child’s larger-than-life character off the pages, the new series producers are trying a little harder to get it right. Standing 6’5” in the books (Cruise is a foot shorter) and using his size as a key part of his tough persona, Reacher is a big bruiser. This time, 6’2” Alan Ritchson takes on the lead, which ought to be better. But why Joe Manganiello isn’t the go-to guy to star as Reacher we will never understand.

SUSPICION Apple TV+ Uma Thurman stars as an American media mogul whose son is kidnapped in the first episode of this tense series.

International authorities identify four Brits as the possible kidnappers and the chase is on. Meanwhile, the suspects (including Kunal Nayyar of The Big Bang Theory) and Elizabeth Henstridge (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) claim innocence as the action heats up and the mystery deepens.

David Oyelowo costars in this creepy psychological thriller based on JP Delaney’s best-selling novel.

INVENTING ANNA Netflix Marking Shonda Rhimes’ first foray as a Netflix showrunner after her $100 million deal with the streamer, this series follows a real-life story of a German woman who conned New Yorkers out of nearly $300,000 before she got caught. Ozark favorite Julia Garner stars, with Anna Chlumsky, Laverne Cox, and Anna Deavere Smith offering support in this muchanticipated show from the creator of Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal.

VIKINGS: VALHALLA Netflix It’s 100 years after the exploits of Vikings, the History Channel hit, as this sequel begins.

Now found on Netflix, this time the characters include familiar historical names like Leif Eriksson and William the Conqueror. Set during the 11th century, this actionpacked series is once again created/executive produced

New York Lifestyles Magazine sat down with Anthony Morali to discuss his interest in solar energy, the assets of having solar energy, and the latest solar canopy project.

What is the importance of solar energy?

Solar energy is accessible and healthy. However, we want more independent energy sources so we can get away from the dependency on fossil fuels that requires oil, gas, and coal to be burned, causing severe repercussions to the environment.

How did you first get involved with solar energy?

After graduating from Pratt Institute with a degree in architecture, I wanted to design with the thought of being energy efficient and environmentally friendly. In 2004, I founded and developed SolarRail, a building integrated photovoltaic application that incorporates the benefits of thin-film photovoltaics with structural glazing to create balcony railings, terrace walls, or guardrails that generate electricity. I wanted whatever I was developing free of fossil fuel dependency. I make everything through Passive Design Architecture, integrating architecture and the environment, whether designing a building with open spaces for healthy airflow or designing a glass wall solar film system for a building’s windows.

What can you tell us about projects like the Solar Greenhouse?

While it is being developed even further, the Solar Greenhouse is essential to the Food Growth Industry.

Roofs with vegetation have been shown to extend roof life, conserve energy, and reduce stormwater runoff and air pollution; recent studies show that they can also improve the performance of solar panels.

Plants reduce a roof ’s contribution to the urban heat island effect by cooling the surrounding air through evaporation; this cooling can also help photovoltaic panels perform more efficiently. The Solar Greenhouse provides a controlled environment that supplies energy to the irrigation systems to ensure a flow of water.

What can you tell us about the latest solar canopy project?

The Solar Canopies are multi-functional. Their design provides a lot of energy and is excellent for placement in used space or storage areas. These overhead solar panel installations can be installed in parking lots or other open areas. In addition, a solar canopy can reduce the energy a building or site needs to operate. During peak sunlight midday, your facility can run off the power generated by the solar canopy. When the amount of green energy collected exceeds the moment’s needs, that power is then saved to your system for later use.

What do you see in the future for solar energy and Green Stream Holdings?

As the world evolves, moving towards clean, green energy is a team effort involving a universal mindset. Thankfully the last few years, legislation has made it easier for clean energy like Solar energy to be the way of the future. In New York State, the powerplants are being shut down in favor of several microgrids supplying renewable energy. In New York City, new buildings are no longer allowed to use gas as a power source, as solar and other renewable energy sources will provide more power to these infrastructures. Green Stream understands this is not only good for the environment but also the long-term economic structure. With the way technology is constantly developing, we will be able to have solar canopies and batteries that can charge, store, and supply endless energy to your home, car, building, business, and eventually entire cities in the next 5 to 10 years.

MARILYN CHINITZ: GUTS, MOXIE, & A LITTLE DETECTIVE WORK

he’s represented Tom Cruise and Michael Douglas. She was named one of New York’s 50 Top Women Lawyers and has appeared numerous times on The Today Show and 20/20 for her expertise in law. She even hosts a popular podcast. But solving a murder was not something Marilyn Chinitz, one of the legal world’s most prominent matrimony attorneys, was expected to do.

And yet, the instincts she has developed throughout her career told her something was amiss when she learned a woman had been murdered in her New York home during a contentious divorce and buried quickly after. “I said [to the victim’s siblings] ‘You’ve buried your sister. I think the husband killed her,” Chinitz says, years later. So, the family hired a private investigator, found evidence, and had the body exhumed based on her intuition.

The husband was eventually convicted of murder.

It’s all in a day’s work for Chinitz, a partner for the prestigious legal firm Blank Rome LLP, with 600 attorneys spread across 14 offices, including New York and Shanghai.

Chinitz, who graduated with honors from New York University and attained her law degree from Yeshiva University Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, is widely seen as one of her profession’s most skilled negotiators. However, her expertise in premarital and postnuptial agreements, spousal and child support, complex financial arrangements, same-sex divorce/dissolution matters, and paternity cases are what makes her so sought after. She has also litigated several cross-border and international custody cases, one of which involved returning abducted children in proceedings filed under The Hague Convention, and regularly cooperates with foreign counsels abroad.

One case illustrates the ingenuity she brings to her cases: When she learned that a parent in an opposing divorce case had fled to Italy with her child illegally, she hired a private detective to pose as a bride looking for a dress and sent her to the woman’s family bridal shop. Once again, her instincts proved correct. “You look back and think, Wow, this is like a movie!” Chinitz said. “There isn’t a story I haven’t heard.”

It’s not all cloak and dagger. Most of the time, Chinitz advises clients on the realities of matrimony law and assesses their resolve if that’s something they want to do. “You can educate them as to whether or not divorce is something that they want to embark on,” she says.

“Once I understand their reasoning, I can extrapolate what their motivations are and how they are thinking. You know right away if somebody says, I’m done, I want to move on, but you also know if somebody is hesitant and making decisions without full knowledge or having done their due diligence. I like the idea of people at least trying to be cooperative,” Chinitz says. “Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn’t.”

One of the most sensitive areas she deals with is child custody and support agreements, which are rife with tension. Chinitz advises her clients to start with the children’s needs. “The lifestyle your children have enjoyed throughout your marriage is and should be a valid consideration in setting the correct child support amount,” she says. “However, parties must be realistic as well. Most people spend most of what they make and live beyond their means. Even the more affluent clients may experience sacrifices when having to establish two households, decrease budgets, increase travel expenses, and live with the realities of increased responsibility as single parents.”

It’s just one of the many obstacles Chinitz navigates throughout her day and manages successfully.

Outside of the courtroom, Chinitz, the proud mother of two accomplished adult children, loves cycling around the city and is a devoted participant in fundraising drives. A globetrotter at heart, she also loves to travel to international destinations.

From a new white clinic atop New York City’s skyline, Dr. Dendy Engelman is a sight for fixed eyes: attractive, petite, kind, and full of Southern charm and sass.

She is her own best advertisement and one of the city’s best cosmetic dermatologists, with a clientele that keeps her booked months at a time.

Engelman (or “Dr. Dendy,” as she is often called) is a board-certified MD and Mohs surgeon and a star attraction at Gotham’s Shafer Clinic.

In addition, she is recognized by many as an expert hand in beauty’s best friends, like neurotoxins, injectable fillers, chemical peels, and the latest facial and body sculpting technology.

Her latest enthusiasm is Emo sculpt NEO, a non-invasive body treatment to eliminate fat cells while toning and strengthening muscles. Another tip of expert advice is to select a product with hyaluronic acid, a vital ingredient to fight moisture loss by binding one thousand times its molecular weight of water in the skin. Injected into the skin (Juvéderm, Restylane) or used topically in serums or moisturizers, it produces a youthful plumping effect combating dry skin, one of the most common complaints of aging.

Engelman is the first to admit creating an at-home beauty regimen can be difficult, especially if it involves store-bought cosmetics.

“It is so overwhelming,” she acknowledges. “You have ladies at the counter who are telling you about how this potion is the next big thing.

It’s a facelift in a jar. And that’s quite compelling. So many marketing claims have no backup to what they’re saying. I wish I could stand there and help guide people where to go and what to invest in,” she says, laughing.
