SPIRIT OF CHANGE s we turn the calendar, we welcome the transition from long days to the hope of better days ahead. A new president brings a signal of hope. While we can’t change the past, the future days can impact, influence, and change our present actions. This month we chose to profile noteworthy individuals who affect change and make a difference in the world—whether large or small. Our cover feature on Charlie Siem alludes to change in the music world. Read what he has been doing and the launch of his new album. Up in The Bronx, Maria Di Rende is shedding new light on a difficult transition from indoor to outdoor dining at Enzo’s of Arthur Avenue. Not only will she not give up, but she has added a new takeout outlet for diners. Then, there’s Hannah Fastov, the young designer who has turned the fashion world upside down with her Puffle bag. This year look for Hannah’s newest design—a tribute to New York City and its resilience. Finally, another change-maker is David Noto, the Italian entrepreneur who has made Prosecco a household name. His Altaneve Prosecco is sipped by the rich, famous—and the rest of us. See his story on why he left finance behind to create this beloved wine. And, of course, we couldn’t mention February without a nod to Valentine’s Day. Throughout the issue, you’ll find gifts for that special someone, getaways to spark a romance, and even a deep dark brownie to whip up, too. With change comes positive outlooks and the dawning of a better New York City. In the spirit of changes in the world today, Michael Jackson probably said it best in his song, “Man In The Mirror.” “If you wanna make the world a better place, Take a look at yourself and make a change.” As New Yorkers, we’re used to change. This city will come back! See you next issue…

MAKING BEAUTIFUL MUSIC WITH STYLE & SOPHISTICATION By Bailey Beckett Photographed at The Villa San Michele, Florence | Photography by Gilles-Marie Zimmerman

e’s been photographed by Karl Lagerfeld. Appeared as the face of Dior. Serenaded Lady Gaga. Performed with The Who. Charlie Siem, the 34-year-old violinist, has changed classical music rules over the last decade, bringing youth, energy, and elan to the age-old genre.

FEBRUARY 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 13

14 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | FEBRUARY 2021

With dramatic strokes of his Guarneri del Gesù violin, an instrument that dates to the 1700s and insured for $10 million, Siem’s theatrical flourishes, impeccable style, and movie quality charisma has brought new, unexpected audiences around the world. With his new album Between the Clouds, Siem is again bringing the past to the present with a selection of classics that include Kreisler, Sarasate, Paganini, Elgar, and Wieniawski. It was recorded in a salon-style form evocative of Parisian nights, complemented by pianist Itamar Golan. “It’s a collection of virtuoso pieces that Itamar and myself have played together in concert over the last few years,” says Siem. “It’s a very personal selection from the core repertoire that was a joy to record.” Vanity Fair summed it up perfectly: “When Charlie Siem gets the tiger under the chin, it purrs.” New York Lifestyles caught up with the virtuoso where he has spent the pandemic.

I’ve always played the violin—I picked up on it when I was three, and I’ve never looked back. What’s the inspiration behind Between the Clouds? It’s a collection of some of my favorite lollipop pieces for violin and piano. It features a curated selection of encore tracks—firework pieces that you put in a recital program after the sonata. We put this thing together in terms of the edits and getting the album finalized during the lockdown, and I felt between the clouds. I didn’t know necessarily where I was going, in a philosophical sense. Did you always want to become a violinist? I’ve always played the violin—I picked up on it when I was three, and I’ve never looked back. It was my mother who introduced me to the instrument. She used to play tapes of music, and I really fell in love with it. The repertoire for the violin is extraordinary; there’s so much variety. Some great pieces I used to listen to as a child are inspirational, and they really stimulated my imagination. Deep inside, I had a calling. I had to be very disciplined. I was in school, so I would get up at about 5:30 in the morning and do about two hours before school. Then I practiced on my lunch break for an hour. And then I practiced for three hours when I came home. How did you develop your elegant performance style? I relate something of myself within the music’s meaning. You play and interpret a piece of music that has thousands of notes, make them all fit together, fill phrases and, as it were, lift the architecture of the music into the air so that it creates something coherent and relatable to an audience. FEBRUARY 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 15

What are some of your fondest musical memories? When I was 11, I played in Tel Aviv—the Vivaldi concerto for four violins with Ida Haendel, one of the great violinists of all time, whom I studied with, and Shlomo Mintz, who is also my teacher. That was a great memory for me. Also, when I first played with the Oslo Philharmonic (I’m half Norwegian). I also remember playing with the Royal Philharmonic in Kenwood House, which is this big open-air venue in London, when I was 17. When I wrote my own piece, one or two years ago, and recorded this with the English Chamber Orchestra, that was a special moment for me because I’ve never written a piece before. How does being so well-traveled affect your music? Playing the violin is a very technical thing, and traveling is distracting because the best way to be good at the violin is to stay in one place and practice. But traveling is a great privilege, and I enjoy it as much as I can. I don’t know if that affects the way you play, but I think it affects how you enjoy music and what you get out of music. Your breadth of understanding is expanded when you travel because you see various cultures meet hugely different people, which opens you up. It makes you more aware of the differences in the world. And this allows you to be more generous in the way you express yourself in the music.

With his new album Between the Clouds, Siem is again bringing the past to the present with a selection of classics… You’ve performed in New York many times. What’s your favorite part of the city? New York has always represented a cultural center, and I am charged with its energy each time I visit. Whether it’s Broadway, the Met, Carnegie Hall, or Lincoln Center, I am overwhelmed by the richness in that great city. You have also become a style ambassador for designers like Karl Lagerfeld. When did this develop? By chance. I was playing a concert, and I was asked the next day to be in the Dunhill campaign. I thought this was a great way to get exposure as a violinist, so I said yes. That’s how it started. I’ve done a few things in the fashion world, and I continue to do things with those guys because I can meet many interesting people, and it doesn’t take much time. And I get paid very well! If you’re lucky to work with great photographers, they make everything happen. It’s different than music, but the same principles apply. It’s a challenge whenever you go on the stage to do the best you can and be at your highest level. Why do you think the fashion world has taken such a liking to you? I’ve got my personal style, and I feel strong about who I am. I don’t think of myself as a fashionable person. I don’t follow the fashion of today. I do something unusual for the fashion world to use—they don’t have many violinists. It’s an unusual but kind of glamorous connection. What is your style secret? The key to me is wearing clothes that fit you in a very complimentary way and are tailored to your body shape. Also, not to wear flamboyant clothes. You don’t want people to notice the clothes and not the person. I wouldn’t say I like too many colors. I keep it simple. LIFE & STYLE

VALENTINE’S DAY EDITION By Griffin Miller

ver the last year, we’ve eaten one too many pizza slices, tossed back a slew of unhealthy beverages, watched the love of our life parade around in sweats and underwear, and closed our eyes as we walked by mirrors, knowing the hair horrors that lurk there. Enough, I say! It’s February… month of Valentine amore. Let’s put some romance back into a romance! After all, we sort of recall how to dress up (Hint: the basics live in our memory banks and closets). And posh dining can be had at home, too! So, dig out that favorite soundtrack and indulge in my favorite Valentine delights—from bonbons to flowers to trivets! LUXE & LUSCIOUS HAUTE ALLURE When exquisite caviar for two arrives in a handsome cooler, expect the kind of romantic repast in which heart-shaped sparks will serendipitously fly! Or spread the love with a caviar soirée, virtually or in-home, available in sets with crème fraîche, cocktail blini, and mother-of-pearl caviar spoons. San Fran’s The Caviar Co. holds the key to exquisite taste with their dazzling selection of caviar options and gift boxes, all ready to ship from the West Coast. Info: thecaviarco.com.

On the femme side of Valentine’s gifting, I’m with Beyoncé: “Put a Ring on It.” Over the years, I’ve added to my ring collection in a significant way. I have to say I am seduced by Blue Nile’s stunning array of lab-grown diamond rings ranging from engagement, wedding, stackable, to my personal favorite, their Diamond Round & Princess Bypass Ring. A wraparound design with two stones that don’t quite kiss—forever locked in amorous anticipation. Info: bluenile.com.

BROADWAY BY CANDLELIGHT

OURS TRULY

For thousands of other New Yorkers and me, Broadway and the theater community’s absence has been devastating, which is why I was thrilled to learn about Stagedoor Candles. Caskey Hunsader founded the company while on COVID hiatus from his work as a stage manager, hand-pouring candles and creating room sprays and diffusers in scents inspired by Broadway characters. For V-Day: “The French Lovers Collection” built around Les Misérables. As for setting the mood, Caseky suggests playing the cast album by candlelight, “…and remembering what’s so magical about Broadway.” Amen. Info: stagedoorcandles.com.

With their varied pink hues and distinctive allure, Rosé wines offer vino connoisseurs and neophytes alike the perfect quaff with which to toast the year’s most sensual holiday. A standout in this singular genre is Rotari Brut Rosé 2014. Originating in The Dolomites’ heart and comprised of both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, this elegant Rosé serves up enticing aromas matched by an irresistible body and flavor. Perfect for sharing via Zoom, Skype, FaceTime, etc. Info: rotari.it/en-us.

FOREVER FABULOUS

A CUT ABOVE

Anyone who pegs women as the sole recipients of flowers on Valentine’s Day should take a page out of my playbook: I had a bouquet sent to my husband in his office—a surprise that revealed that guys appreciate floral gestures as much as, well, the next guy. Should your dude suffer from allergies, or fuss over floral shelf life, opt for Unwilted, purveyor of stunning, upscale, handcrafted, to-die-for paper flower arrangements. Pictured is a little number called “Saffron Lust”—a title that says, “resist at your own risk”! Info: unwilted.com.

Leave it to Omaha Steaks to create a sumptuous Valentine’s Day meal seemingly designed to seduce even the most finicky foodie. Should surf & turf meet your criteria for plated passion, I leave it to you to consider this five-star menu for four: Butcher’s Cut Filet Mignons (with a side of their signature steak sauce), Maine Lobster Tail Halves, scalloped potatoes, creamed corn, and a decadent quartet of individual chocolate soufflés. To rearrange the Bard a bit: “If food be the music of love, play on”! Info: omahasteaks.com.

LEGALLY FROND Interested in going a little rogue this Valentine’s Day? Then might I propose a little unexpected greenery to grace your tabletop: Graf-Lantz’s Marijuana Leaf Trivets. Masterfully crafted from crème de la Merino wool felt, these whimsical trivets offer superior thermal protection (they’re also antimicrobial and water & stain resistant). Besides, they look cool should you want to purpose them into a distinctively sculpted base for your favorite flower-filled vase. Info: graf-lantz.com.

HEARTFELT

CONFECTION PERFECTION

A little edgy and extremely eco, the OMM YEAH! Heart of Life Valentine’s Day necklace presents the ultimate way to share the love with a one-of-a-kind pewter heart pendant etched with the Tree of Life and backed by a red silk ribbon made from Indian sari remnants. More than a mere fashion statement, the piece and its design serve as a reminder of how valuable tree-planting can be in combating climate change and celebrates the “organic beauty and inherent respect for the earth and its peoples.” Beyond beautiful. Info: ommyeah.com.

It would be oh, so very wrong to omit the heavenly essence of Valentine’s Day for people like me: chocolate. Skipping the drug store array, I am all for taking the bean of temptation to the stratosphere with VESTA Chocolate Bonbons (milkbased or vegan—your choice). Handmade in six Valentine-infused flavors with such evocative names as Passion Fruit, Champagne, Raspberry Rose, and Strawberries & Cream. And do not get me started on the luscious quotient. Little bonbon gems—what could be better? Info: vestachocolate.com. •

UNDER THE ITALIAN SUN LUXURIATING IN THE PLEASURES OF LIFE By Lori Simmons Zelenko

or the designing duo behind the Eau d’Italie fragrance collection, lightning, you could say, struck as they sat on the terrace of their family hotel, Le Sirenuse Positano, one of the most glorious resorts in the world. It’s a location John Steinbeck felt was “a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.” The dream, however, nearly became a nightmare after 9/11. Facing a canceled silver anniversary gala with a worldwide coterie of A-listers held in abeyance, what to do? How to bring Le Sirenuse to guests who couldn’t be there to celebrate? Gathered on their terrace, surrounded by the essence of nearby lemon groves, the earthen scent of sun-warmed terracotta tiles, and the alluring freshness of bountiful blossoms all embraced by sea-salted air the idea came to them like love at first sight: Create a fragrance to invite their dear friends to experience Le Sirenuse every day, wherever in the world they might be. The answer was clear for this designing duo: Marina Sersale, a documentary filmmaker, whose family began Le Sirenuse in their summer home, an 18thcentury palazzo overlooking the glistening blue bay of Positano, and her husband Sebastián Alvarez Murena, an esteemed journalist from Argentina, conceptualized a fragrance story to share their love of Italy and in particular, the Amalfi Coast. Their first scent, Eau d’Italie, was introduced 20 years ago, a bergamot-rich parfum that, like any successful siren, seduces both men and women. No wonder David Bowie became the scent’s biggest fan. 20 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | FEBRUARY 2021

Le Sirenuse

FROM ITALY WITH AMORE From one flirtation with scent, many romances followed. Intended originally as a lovely souvenir of time passed at Le Sirenuse, the fragrances quickly took a path all their own. From Positano to Rome to the U.S. to so many points abroad. Armchair adventure today is a necessity, so what better way than a fragrance to let you imagine being in Italy, inhaling the scents that make a visit there so memorable? What began as a loving gesture has produced 11 fragrances in the Eau d’Italie Collection with the newest, Jasmine Leather—a timeless Italian combination of leather and Jasmine which is set to launch this month. We wondered if they are thinking of making their collection an even dozen. “But of course! We are constantly working on new fragrances. It’s a bit like a pot which is always on the fire and boiling. At some point, something in there is ready,” so confess Marina and Sebastián, delighted to satisfy those whose appetite for Eau d’Italie is unceasing. “There will be more to come, no doubt about it!”

FUTURE PERFECT As we look to the future, how do we assess the recent past? “2020 has been a hideous year. A painful year, worse in many respects than the aftermath of 9/11 when the fragrance collection was born,” Sebastián and Marina reveal. Marina and Sebastián, hope these fragrances will remind us of the pleasures of life. “We cannot let joyfulness escape us any longer,” remark these two who have proven so adept at bringing darkness into light. The power of scent is hardly unfamiliar to Sebastián and Marina, yet it has never been more critical than it is today. “I think this crazy year we have been through has taught us to travel with our minds.” As you may know, nothing can transport you faster to a place you dream of than fragrance. There is no image, no words, to take you beyond the scent of a place, a time, an individual you cherish. Don’t we all want to be transported somewhere magical, somewhere that surrounds us in beauty and kindness?”

A CLASSIC SCENT As we forge into 2021, Marina and Sebastián have a message. “From the bottom of our hearts, our message is: dare to be free, dare to be happy. Let fragrances choose you. Trust your senses.”

Marina & Sebastian

Accept Eau d’Italie’s invitation to take you on a fantastic voyage. The fragrance is launching at Bergdorf Goodman this month and may be purchased at bergdorfgoodman.com. • FEBRUARY 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 21

THE LODGE AT WOODLOCH LOVE IN THE QUIET VALLEY By Sandy Samuels

an you remember the last time you sat by the fire listening to a live performer, even one singing behind a Plexiglass barrier? Marc Von Em, a talented vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter gave us the gift of “normalcy” by singing James Taylor, Harry Chapin, Nat King Cole, and a myriad of folk, rock and soulful songs, his way. It was wonderful, especially after a languid afternoon in and out of the sauna, steam, whirlpools, and swimming pool. Couples have nuzzled in this land of love since the time of the Delaware Indians, who snuggled in one-room bark wigwams near the riverbanks; they named their home Poconos, which translates to “quiet valley between two mountains.” The region’s pristine Delaware River and its lakes, streams, ponds, woodlands, and hilltops lured future generations to the area, especially honeymooners. If they drove on country roads, as I did this January 2021, they might have seen polka-dotted snow patches, waterfalls frozen to rock faces, smoke rising from farmhouse chimneys, mega-stacks of split wood, and long, slate fences.

POCONO PERFECTION When The Lodge at Woodloch first opened in 2006, I couldn’t wait to visit because I knew that top spa consultants, Ginny and John Lopis, had influenced its conception and design. I was aware of their work at Canyon Ranch in Arizona, The Cloister at Sea Island in Georgia, and Doral Saturnia, in Miami, all of which were their former prestigious clients and some of my favorite spa destinations. For his part, my late husband was always eager for a romantic getaway and especially for one in northeastern Pennsylvania, where he had spent the happiest time of his youth at Camp Navajo, in nearby Honesdale. And a romantic retreat it was. We both appreciated the beauty of the place, the natural environment, the many roaring fireplaces, and co-ed whirlpools. He was unabashedly happy that there was a bar (an atypical spa amenity), and we both enjoyed the refined dining atmosphere. Years later, and even alone, I found the calm, beautiful, and magical ambiance of Woodloch a welcome antidote to stay-at-home COVIDera life. On a secluded, 500-acre parcel amid a forest, the venue is adjacent to the privately-held, 1200-acre tract that’s part of Woodloch Pines, the Kiesendahl family’s ever-popular, 900-room, family resort. The timeless architecture of this sprawling, warm and detail-laden, selfcontained hospitality and wellness complex reminds me of a contemporary Adirondack camp, with gorgeous woodwork, slate walls, coffered ceilings, and vaulted 17.5-foot-high window walls that integrate the dramatic woodland backdrop. FEBRUARY 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 23

The entry to this mountain chalet is a garden foyer with an interactive centerpiece display featuring three oversized crystal “singing” bowls, which sit on a circular, sculpturally-carved wooden stand. (If you stroke the bowl, the sound waves “are tuned to energy centers in your body, called chakras, specifically the Root, Heart, and Third Eye chakras.”) Straight ahead, they’ve added a spacious living room, the Chakra Lounge, with its various seating areas and stone-fronted fireplace. On the left, there’s the reception and the entrance to TREE Restaurant. The Maitre d’ is stationed behind a plexiglass partition facing a comfy sofa and large armchairs in front of the enormous, oversized fireplace on a high slate wall that separates it from the intimate library, with its wooden bookcases. That space is now used for five socially distant dining tables, and my favorite table faces the window wall. The hallway on the left continues towards a tri-level 58-room hotel, past a casual Garden Lounge with another fireplace, and a 9.5-footwide Gallery Hall, where the walls are studded with seasonal artwork. Art is integral to the Lodge; there’s a full-time Artist in Residence, Debra McGiniss, several art instructors, and a newly expanded Art Studio under the new living room, with several classes daily, all designed to challenge and gratify intellectually curious guests.

ROOMS WITH A VIEW

Accommodations are spacious, comfortable, and well thought out, with reading lights over the bed, plenty of drawers and shelves for storage, and a large LG-TV, with lots of cable channels and movies. The woodsy décor features forest-green, leaf-patterned carpet, wooden furniture, sculptural, raw edge tree plank that frames a mirror, an indoor contemporary Adirondack slotted chair with a twig frame. The armchair and hassock are placed to take advantage of the veranda’s view and beyond, through the window walls. Bathrooms have marble floor tiles, a shower with a seat, a lighted mirror sits between double sinks on the granite counter, and there’s a wooden bench below.

FIRST-CLASS SPA The building’s right-hand wing leads from the entry past the very well-stocked spa boutique and salon to spa reception and the entire 40,000 square foot spa complex. There are his/her spa facilities with spacious lounges, locker rooms (9 private shower areas in the ladies’ locker room), sauna, steam, and whirlpool behind the reception desk. The wet facility leads to the exciting co-ed window-walled, multi-sensory indoor pool complex, the Aqua Garden, which features dramatic waterfalls that cascade from one whirlpool to another adjacent to the pool; the pool deck opens outside to a heated patio floor and another whirlpool. Fitness facilities are mostly on an upper level, with a 3500-square foot cardio-weight space, spinning and rowing studios, and more. The lower- level houses 27-cabins for customized treatments: facials, mud baths, Native Sage Stone Massage, and Lavender Garden Dream. Christine (who wore a face shield over her mask) was the practitioner for my much-needed, longmissed facial. My skin appreciated an exfoliation with the HydraFacial machine and sucked in all the super serums, antioxidants, and hyaluronic acid applied during the service. The myriad services on the spa menu include massages for couples. 24 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | FEBRUARY 2021

NATURE’S BOUNTY Outdoors, there are many activities—and relaxation spaces—within the woodland setting around a private 15-acre lake. I opted to explore as much as I could of the three gardens, five-miles of well-marked trails, a labyrinth, an orchard and apiary, and Blackmore Farm, which raises some of the produce served. There are organized classes, walks, hikes, plus bikes and kayaks. (Tennis and golf are available at the nearby country club.) My stay started with a Cooking Class shortly after I arrived. I went to the Demo Kitchen, where I learned some new techniques for making Clams Casino, Oysters Rockefeller, and Mussels Marinière from Brooks, the Demonstration Chef. I missed the nutritionist’s presentation of healthy dishes because I decided to take advantage of the indoor pool complex, where I also took an Aqua-Jog class. One of the most significant advantages of staying at a spa is the option to eat healthfully. Here, at TREE Restaurant, it’s fine dining with beautifully executed, four-course meals served by a long-experienced and loyal staff; at dinner, they are presented at a table with Frette napkins and tablecloths. The choices feature organic, local, farm-raised, and “best quality” ingredients; the options also include many gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan items. But, be assured, this is not deprivation dining; you need to choose carefully and order wisely, if you want low-calorie meals. Along with freshly made juices, grilled fish, chicken and salads, and wonderfully prepared vegetables, heartier items and specialties are also served at every meal. I ordered a Korean Steak Bowl with tender top cap beef, for one lunch, and atoned with a grilled chicken breast, at another. For dinner, I was amazed at the loin pork chop’s size and tenderness, with a demi-glace sauce swooshed on the plate. For my last dinner the classic 10 oz. Strip steak was a perfect choice. I even opted for an Open Face Crab Benedict for breakfast, which might have been a no-no, had I not ordered the Hollandaise on the side. I don’t know how fattening the brownies, cheesecake, and crème brûlée are, but I can assure you they were tasty. I noticed a TREEhouse Bloody Mary, with organic vodka and a French Mimosa on the menu even at breakfast. I never saw many people while I was there (I was told there were 52 guests), but at dinner, there were mostly couples at the ten tables in the large dining room and a few in the library, the evening before. The Lodge at Woodloch is undoubtedly an idyllic choice for a Valentine’s Day retreat; it’s also a delightful year-round destination. Enjoy! In addition to additional hand sanitizer stations throughout the property, upgraded filtration and ionization systems have been added. Most importantly, no one enters the room once it is occupied. ARUBA MAGIC

AN IDEAL WORKCATION IN PARADISE By Rachel Rogers

ruba wants you. The tiny island—part of the Dutch Caribbean—has opened its doors to travelers who want to spend the pandemic in paradise. And why not? With magnificent beaches, diverse culinary delights, an amazing landscape outside the hurricane belt, Aruba is the ideal place to do a “workation.” Not only has the island implemented stringent sanitation protocols for businesses, but various hotels and villas are offering amazing deals, along with serious sanitizer. And you can bring your cat and dog, too! They don’t call it “One Happy Island” for nothing. The southwestern shore of the island is a seven-mile stretch of white sand beach, which includes the world-famous Palm Beach and Eagle Beach, where you can wind surf, snorkel, and jet ski. (You can also grab Açaí bowls and other delicious and healthy fare from Eduardo’s Beach Shack on Palm Beach.) Arikok National Park, on the northeastern coast, is a desert-like ecological preserve with a variety of animal and plant life. It’s also home to the California Lighthouse, and Natural Pool, which was formed by the rugged coast and rock formations. If you’re more interested in indoor activities, you can stop by one of the many hotel casinos, which are still open (masks required). Aruba Ray’s Comedy, at the Holiday Inn, brings world class comedians to the island.

WHERE TO STAY

There are all sorts of accommodations on the island, from timeshares to bed and breakfasts to five-star hotels. Here are some favorites.

Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino

Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino Situated on Palm Beach, the resort boasts modern room decor with an upscale feeling and beach chic ambiance. The eight-story complex has 414 rooms and 24 suites, each one with a 100-squarefoot balcony overlooking the shimmering Caribbean Sea. The main free-form pool and its cascading waterfalls look directly out to the ocean and features a popular swim-up bar. There’s also a casino and 6,500 square-foot Mandara Spa, the largest spa on the island. Within walking distance are the courts at Moomba Beach, which set the stage for a friendly or competitive game of beach tennis (a hybrid of tennis and beach volleyball.) Atardi is a pop-up restaurant right on the beach; you can dine with your toes in the sand. Try the Macadamian Crusted Grouper and the Red Snapper. You won’t be sorry. Info: marriott.com. Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort and Spa

Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort and Spa Situated on 12 acres of luxe waterfront, here is the perfect getaway. The resort recently underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation, which includes Trankilo, a new adults-only pool with 10 private cabanas and the transformed ZoiA Spa. Indeed, they take wellness seriously here: The minute you step into the open-air lobby with its magical ocean views, you’ll feel yourself starting to chill. “Given the times we are currently living, wellness and wellbeing are more important than ever,” says Avery Shipley, the hotel’s Wellness Wellbeing Ambassador. To that end, the hotel is offering a range of classes, including morning and full moon yoga, Qigong, tennis, hiking, mountain biking and, of course, water sports. They also hold mixology classes, so you can finesse your cocktail-making skills. Info: hyatt.com.

Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort The resort’s owner and CEO, Ewald Biemans, has a clear-cut vision for what the property is and what it is not. It’s adult only. It’s quiet. You won’t hear “Margaritaville” anywhere. In fact, if a guest arrives and discovers the experience they’re seeking is better suited for another property, Biemans will give the guest the keys to the resort car so they can find a different hotel that’s a better fit for them.

Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort

Bucuti & Tara has been voted TripAdvisor’s #1 Resort in the Caribbean and Most Romantic Hotel in the World. Facilities include a beach bar with daily Happy Hour, daily Healthy Hour (with discounts on smoothies!), day spa, movies on the beach, gift shop, fitness center, a freshwater pool, car rental desk, multilingual concierge staff, and spacious beach with comfortable lounge chairs. The previous year’s winner? Apple. Yes. That Apple. Info: bucuti.com. Aruba Ocean Villas Situated in the small town of Savaneta, you’ll find the only overwater villas on the island. Perfect for a romantic getaway, it’s tranquil and dreamy and an official partner of Aruba Tourism Authority’s “Happily Ever After Guarantee.” As part of the program, weddings and honeymoons booked for 2021 can be postponed for up to a year from the original date. Its tranquil dreamy ambiance lures the rest of us to kick-back and relax. Spend your getaway sipping a cocktail in a hammock. JEWELS OF THE CARIBBEAN A GUIDE TO PLANNING YOUR TRIP NOW OR LATER By Patricia Canole

he Caribbean’s blue-and-green patchwork of islands and sea curves softly southward from Florida’s tip. Within just a few hours, you can be lunching beside the murmuring surf, meandering beautiful beaches, or pondering a papaya-colored moon that peeks through the palms.

So, if the world of island choices seems overwhelming, don’t worry. Follow our trail through the sands of the most tranquil islands in the sun. This sampler gives glimpses of inviting isles. Read on.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Latin flair is in the air in DR. It is full of warm hospitality, coupled with the grace of days gone by, and the sophisticated vivacity of the 21st century—all cloaked in plenty of Spanish charm. Part of the island of Hispaniola (Haiti is the other half), it is circled with beaches and clear aquamarine waters for as far as you see. Legendary resort towns such as La Romana, Punta Cana, Cap Cana, Samana, Puerto Plata dot the coastline, offering plenty of tropical fun. Try your hand at river rafting or perhaps opt for some mountain biking. Then trace the paths of colonial history (downtown Santo Domingo is a World Heritage site), go whale watching or scuba diving. Get out into the countryside for opportunities to meet with locals and even visit a sugar plantation. Raw sugar never tasted so good! This is an island where memories are around every corner! Info: godominicanrepublic.com.

JAMAICA

Jamaica stands out as more than an island. It’s a mini-continent that travelers often consider the Caribbean’s lushest, loveliest destination. Forested blue-green mountains rise from the island’s spine and roll down to golden sands along the 200-mile-long north coast. Simply put, Jamaica displays some of the most beautiful island scenery. Negril is a favorite haven for those wishing to bask in the dazzling seven-mile strip of beach. Here you can watch divers jump into the clear Caribbean from the cliffs. If you’re feeling adventuresome, then head to Ocho Rios and walk up the cascading Dunn’s River Falls. In sleepy Port Antonio, go rafting on the Rio Grande, flanked by the majestic Blue Mountains. Old plantation houses dot the island and a visit to Montego Bay will find many high-end resorts. Kingston, the capital and cultural hub, is the focal point on the south shore. Explore the city and nearby Spanish town, once the island’s capital, or visit sleepy mountain villages. The scenery along the way is breathtaking. Info: visitjamaica.com. 28 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | FEBRUARY 2021

PUERTO RICO

A salsa beat, fast and sexy, sets the pace. Island meets urban in the capital, San Juan, where nightclubs and open-air cafes energize a romantic Old World setting of cobbled streets and balconied buildings. Beaches of every kind— windswept, surf-ready, and diver’s delight—ring this US commonwealth, backed by a mountainous interior of vast caves and lush forests. Even nature makes music in P.R. The island’s coqui frog, a wee fellow with a powerful song, thrives in the El Yunque rainforest. For more creature comforts, take a post-sundown swim in Phosphorescent Bay, where microscopic organisms cause your breaststroke to glow in the dark. And for spelunkers, explore one of the world’s largest cave networks at Rio Camuy. Info: discoverpuertorico.com.

ST. BARTS

Take a bit of the Riviera, add a touch of the Brittany countryside, place it all in the Caribbean, and you’ll find yourself in St. Barthélemy (its proper name), a tiny—just 8 square miles—paradise that’s as French as Cannes, but much closer to home. A playground of the rich and famous, this little island has plenty to attract honeymooners, too. Even in high season, crowds are rare on St. Barts’ many gorgeous beaches. Winding roads over the hilly terrain afford spectacular views of the wide-open land stretching to the water. You can luxuriate on the gorgeous white sand Anse de Flamands, lined by crystal clear azure water, or hop in a minimoke, a glorified golf cart, to discover the island’s rural regions. Then head for Gustavia, the capital, home of such chic boutiques as Versace, Ralph Lauren, and the local Stéphane & Bernard. Nightlife comprises dining on fine French cuisine while watching the sunset and perhaps listening to some piano music. Info: saintbarth-tourisme.com. •

Editor’s Note: At press time, most Caribbean islands reopened to welcome tourism, with protocols in place to protect visitors and residents against COVID-19. However, there are strict public health procedures with openings, most of which require travelers to produce proof of a COVID-free test. Check each country’s website for more up-to-date requirements as the number of cases globally and in the US has remained high.

AROUND TOWN MURRAY HILL By Linette Semino

ncompassing East 34th to 42nd Streets and from Madison Avenue to the East River, Murray Hill is one of the most walkable neighborhoods in Manhattan. It is a lovely neighborhood with a rich history that offers attainable luxury and views to inspire. HISTORY & CULTURE This neighborhood was named for Robert Murray, the head of a respected mercantile family that settled in the area in the 18th century. Other notable early residents include J. P. Morgan, who in 1882 built a brownstone freestanding mansion on Madison Avenue at East 36th Street. Today it is part of The Morgan Library & Museum. Over time, Murray Hill’s pedigree increased, becoming an upscale neighborhood during the 20th century. Now, this vibrant neighborhood has a mix of townhouses on side streets and multi-apartment or commercial buildings on the avenues. There are several modern new construction buildings between Third and First Avenues, providing a mix of historic and modern structures. By the end of the 19th century, when J.P. Morgan moved to Kips Bay, a gentlemen’s agreement had been established restricting the streets of Murray Hill to private homes. Until the invasion of high-rise hotels and apartments in the 1920s, it was a neighborhood of elegant mansions, many of which still stand. In addition, Murray Hill also contains several cultural institutions, as well as missions and consulates to the nearby United Nations headquarters. Murray Hill has it all including renown restaurants, various gyms, yoga studios, bike paths, parks for dogs, and all types of outdoor activities for active people. Everyone falls in love with the welcoming, down-to-earth energy in this convenient and comfortable neighborhood.

REAL ESTATE INVESTING LEARNING FROM THE BEST By Esther Reizes-Lowenbein

am always amazed at the successful commercial real estate investors I come across. All of them present with similar philosophies, goals, objectives, and a positive, fun outlook on life. Those attributes are consistent even though the individuals and their businesses differ. Ellie Perlman is a female in the industry, and an attorney turned investor; John, a successful self-storage investor, and JC found his niche in a specific market. ELLIE PERLMAN JOHN MANES John Manes Born in Israel, Ellie became a real estate attorney. She envied the fun on the investor side of the table and wanted to join the action, so she attended MIT and earned an MBA degree to learn about finances and marketing. As a proponent of education, Ellie attended many conferences and classes and found much information about the multi-family CRE asset. Starting as a property manager to eventually founding Blue Lake Capital, together with her team, she has 500+ units under her belt. She fine-tuned her hiring skills and learned to delegate well. The investors that join her syndications need to have experience and tolerance for risk. When asked about being a minority in the business, Ellie says that she does not see a difference between her skin color, gender, or intelligence. According to her, people sabotage their success because of their background, not their hard work. She believes that there are more successful women in the industry; they are not as vocal about their success. Although the job is difficult, it is her most satisfying job, and Ellie enjoys it. She also enjoys riding sports cars and winter skiing. Ellie Perlman

The ten dollars he splurged on a book, explaining how to buy, fix up, and manage properties, still pays off till this very day. He has a great work ethic and dramatically admires his team that oversees 16 properties with 130 investors. John implements tasks he learns from watching others. Interviewing John was super fun as he has an infectious laugh and a positive outlook on life. John likes to give back whenever he can. THE ZOOM BOOM

A PERFECT STORM FOR PLASTIC SURGERY By AP Connolly

ith workers spending more time on Zoom, Skype, and other social media platforms, they’ve also noticed it hasn’t been the most flattering of times. Yes, you might say it’s become a perfect storm of sorts. It’s taken on a new priority for those of us working from home who realize we won’t be returning to an office anytime soon. But Zoom and other platforms are only partly responsible for the spike in interest, and simple injectable procedures aren’t the only ones in high demand. Today, most cosmetic surgeries concentrate on the chin, jawline, and neck because the camera angles accentuate those features. Recovery time is made much more manageable with minor post-operative swelling hidden with a mask. And for those who have considered cosmetic surgery—facelifts, breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, etc.—it’s changed. We met with Board Certified Dr. Norman Rowe of Rowe Plastic Surgery with practices in Manhattan, New Jersey, and Long Island. He shed light on the latest skin and body rejuvenation through both surgical and non-invasive procedures. Tell us about why you entered the field of plastic surgery. I am interested in how things work and try to improve on them. I love art and the creative process, so plastic surgery extends my qualities and strengths and satisfies me. What advances have been made in the industry over the last few years? I feel that the non-surgical options for anti-aging, such as laser therapies, have made the most significant leaps forward. In the past, these modalities did not produce the results we see today. Also, the downtime is much less with the more recent advances. 40 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | FEBRUARY 2021

Consultation with a patient

Who is the typical patient, and what is the most used service? My patients have one thing in common; they are young and vibrant at heart and want to display this outwardly. Most of my patients are women who desire their pre-pregnancy bodies once again. These treatments include breast lifts and tummy tucks. I also see many women who want to improve on their “tired” looking faces. My male clientele wants to look vital and remain in the workplace. These men usually seek liposuction and hair replacement treatments. What is the difference between cosmetic/reconstructive plastic surgery? Technically, cosmetic surgery improves something the patient already has. In contrast, reconstructive surgery is when we make a body part because the patient is missing it through a congenital disability or cancer resection. I, however, look at cosmetic and reconstructive surgery as similar. They are both surgeries of the soul. Both fields make the patient feel complete and whole. Tell us a few of the most sought-after cosmetic procedures offered by your practice. Most of the procedures I’ve performed are surgical-based. I offer the newest anti-aging treatments, including skin and body rejuvenation through both surgical and non-invasive methods. And although I am improving on all areas of the body, my particular interest is in breast surgery (lifts, reductions, and augmentations), tummy tucks, eyelid rejuvenation, and rhinoplasties (nose jobs). However, I also enjoy non-surgical treatments for patients, such as Botox, fillers, laser skin rejuvenation, and laser fat reduction. What is the first step for someone considering plastic/cosmetic surgery? Do your homework! You are your best advocate. Be comfortable with the surgeon and feel confident that he/she can deliver what you expect. Ensure this medical professional is a board-certified plastic surgeon, not someone just calling themselves a plastic surgeon.

Dr. Rowe

Walk us through an example of a consultation with a patient. Once the patient makes their appointment, the initial consultation can either be in person or virtual. Many patients find the virtual option easy. I require photographs sent in by the patient of the body part we will discuss virtually. If the patient proceeds with surgery after the virtual meeting or seen in person, we meet, discuss what the patient wants to address, and then examine the patient. Following this, I discuss what is possible for the patient, and we decide if this is what the patient wants to achieve. If they wish to proceed, we schedule a date and a follow-up visit to answer any further questions. Now that we live in a pandemic world, most contact with others is via Zoom/video conferencing. How has it affected operations at your practice? I have been offering virtual consults for years. However, they have increased considerably during the pandemic and will always be a method to visit with a patient in my practice. It’s very convenient. I feel that this probably was the only bright side of the pandemic. What kinds of services have been most popular during the past year? Does this differ from what services are traditionally popular? Surgeries have increased. Patients tell me working remotely, and with no end in sight, they want to get the surgery they have always desired but didn’t have the time. Patients can get most procedures quickly and be Zooming within a couple of days. Our non-surgical treatments have also increased and include Botox, filler, and skin resurfacing. I think this is because of the Zoom effect. People are taking a second look at themselves more than ever. With an increased focus on the face, what other procedures would you recommend for becoming Zoom-ready? Take care of your skin, which is a brilliant start. Besides primary daily skincare visits, see your plastic surgeon two-to-three times a year for skin resurfacing, Botox treatment, or fillers as needed. As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. GET COZY WITH HYGGE

A RITUAL TO HELP IN THIS TIME OF SOCIAL DISTANCING By Melanie Carden

ygge (pronounced hoo-ga) is the foundation of Danish life. Loosely translated, it means cozy and content, but it’s so much more. In this winter series, I’ll explore this concept and offer suggestions on how to “live more hygge.” The word is both noun and adjective—something can be described as hygge (“this old, tattered blanket is so hygge”). Or you can make plans to hygge with close friends and family (“let’s stay in, play board games, and drink mulled wine”). Denmark—long-known as one of the happiest countries—has built its culture around the importance of rejuvenation through moments of cultivated contentment. From burning candles in their workspace to curating cozy moments in all aspects of everyday life—they prioritize emotional well-being. Taking cues from Meil Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute, Copenhagen, and author of The Little Book of Hygge, I’ll cobble together bits of cozy wisdom to help us through this most challenging of winters. Hygge is a feeling, and it requires no expense whatsoever. A favorite chipped mug is just as hygge as a new one. Relish your faded favorites or treat yourself to a coveted frock—but make time in your life to rejuvenate.

SEE THE LIGHT Creating pockets of ambient light are at the core of hygge life. Avoid heavily perfumed candles. Opt for unscented or those lightly scented with pure essential oils to create space for authenticity. These handmade, eco-friendly candles from Satya + Sage offer a balance of ritual and beauty. Info: satyasage.com.

WARMING SPIRITS Be still and imbibe in a small-batch spirit. Cooper’s Daughter—a New Yorkbased distillery—offers this Black Walnut Bourbon. It is aged in American White Oak barrels but finished in barrels that stored black walnut syrup tapped from the distillery’s own trees. It lingers and is exquisite for fireside sips and tempting toddies. Info: available from doorstep.market.

COZY COFFEE From the French press to inexpensive drip, coffee is 100 percent cozy. Sip with intention—savor it. Whether you use a dented family-heirloom carafe or this sleek Saeco Xelsis machine made for espresso aficionados —you’ll be on your way to achieving a hygge moment. Bonus: it offers 15 beverage choices, 7 profile options, and near-endless customization. Info: philips.com.

DURABLE SIMPLICITY Hygge honors simplicity. Merino wool—durable, insulating, and breathable—brings unparalleled comfort to the hyggelig (hoo-ga-lee) life. These natural fibers require less washing and resist wrinkles— perfect for adventure, travel, or snuggling. Versatile selections, like this refined sweatshirt, help declutter your life, leaving you focused on the things that matter most. Info: unboundmerino.com. 42 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | FEBRUARY 2021

CASHMERE CALM To experience cashmere is to be transported into radiant, otherworldly bliss. I’m certain the gods on Mt. Olympus long-mingled over ambrosia, swathed in cashmere. Include a touch of cashmere in your hyggekrog (cozy nook) as a whisper to your soul: it’s time to be still and rejuvenate. This gracious wrap is a quiet exhale within modern-day demands. Info: garnethill.com.

SNUG CLOGS From Austria, with love. Stegmann has been handcrafting quintessentially cozy woolen clogs for 130 years. While we applaud Merino wool, the company makes sure that rarer sheep and their fine wools are protected and celebrated. Traditional clogs for men and women—but also a new, dare I say, sexy clog: the Liesel Skimmer. Info: stegmann.com.

WARMING TRENDS

Hunkering down for quiet time is a requirement of a hygge life. Watching movies counts, but bonus points if you welcome quiet endeavors— reading or board games. Get started with the many offerings at We Are Knitters. Info: weareknitters.com.

Your comfort is paramount when you’re getting your hygge on. Slough off the day’s laborious tasks, curl up with some hot cocoa, and relax. Whether you grab your favorite pair of threadbare sweats or a sublimely patterned treat from Print Fresh loungewear— you’re in for a night of absolute contentment. Info: printfresh.com.

Being warm—especially when Mother Nature gifts us the wonders of her rain, snow, and winds—is exceptionally comforting. The ingenious minds at Kickee Pants make clothes that eschew restrictive designs and this Sherpa blanket whose destiny is all things hygge. A hearty, hardworking blanket with a gilded-pinecone-wink toward the great outdoors. Info: kickeepants.com.

HEAD OUT & HUNKER IN

YOU, ME & TEA

ME TIME Self-care comes in essential forms (nutrition and fresh air) and the outermost ripples of healing and soothing. Hygge encourages the joyful afterglow of indulgent moments. Sweet treats are very hyggelig—as is a bit of pampering. Antipodes of New Zealand and their Aura Manuka Honey Mask is a skincare anomaly: immediate skin-softening results. Info: antipodes.com.

You know what’s “extra hyggelig?” Outdoor activities and then hunkering down for some R & R. Aktiv’s sustainable Scandinavian clothing provides such an adventurous balance. Featuring ruggedly elegant options for adventure, Aktiv is one-stop shopping for men and women alike. They offer snuggly Nordic slippers and leg warmers, too—perfect for post-hike hot toddy time. Info: aktiv.com.

Sitting with friends, sharing tea—simple, yet restorative. Quiet Sunday afternoon on your own? Light the flame under the kettle and brew a perfect mug of steeped tea leaves. Ensure a steady flow of distinctive blends; allow Sips By to curate the finest selections for you. Info: sipsby.com. •

SWCRF’s Dr Waxman and members of the SWCRF Scientific Advisory Board in Hainan in 2019 as part of a forum on aging and cancer

DR. SAMUEL WAXMAN AN INTERNATIONAL EFFORT TO ERADICATE CANCER By Lillian Langtry

ince its inception in 1976, The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF), an international non-profit organization dedicated to curing and preventing cancer, has awarded more than $100 million to support the work of more than 200 researchers across the globe. Founded by Samuel Waxman, M.D., a notable oncologist and physician-scientist at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the Foundation is a cancer research pioneer, and its mission is to eradicate cancer. The SWCRF unique approach funds cutting-edge research that identifies and corrects abnormal gene function that causes cancer and develops minimally toxic treatments for patients. Through the Foundation’s collaborative group of world-class scientists, the Institute Without Walls (IWW) investigators share information and tools to speed breakthroughs in cancer treatments.

BREAKING BARRIERS

Waxman’s passion for curing cancer and research started with the idea that collaboration—across expertise, research institutions, and even national borders—is the key to breaking down obstacles and achieving more breakthroughs. Through the SWCRF/IWW, they now fund a network of 50 researchers in North America, Asia, and Israel. In fact, the SWCRF has funded numerous research collaborations at academic research institutions in China. One such research collaboration led to discovering a treatment for a form of leukemia and improving patient survival rate from less than 25 percent to greater than 95 percent. These successful research collaborations led to a new SWCRF partnership in China that is poised to advance research tackling age as the leading risk factor for cancer. The SWCRF partnered with Hainan Medical University and Ruijin Hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine to form the International Center for Aging and Cancer (ICAC) in Hainan, China. ICAC is a Sino-U.S. non-profit scientific research institution established to promote global research and cultivate talent in aging and cancer research and scholarship. Waxman, named Honorary Director of ICAC and along with members of the SWCF/IWW are serving in an advisory capacity. An inauguration ceremony and conference were held in Hainan, China, this past December 2020 to celebrate the launch. “This center is an important achievement as we are addressing the major risk for cancer, and that is aging. The incidence of cancer is rising considerably among the world’s aging population, and with the number of adults over age 50 growing, cancer will quite frankly become a worldwide epidemic,” said Waxman. He went on to say that the “International Center for Aging and Cancer will devote resources to bringing together scientists who are studying aging with those studying cancer to tackle this global public health crisis. This center will be fully committed to transparency, reciprocity, and adherence to scientific integrity norms,” he went on the say. 44 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | FEBRUARY 2021

A NEW LIGHT

Ruibao Ren, Director of Shanghai Institute of Hematology and coorganizer of the ICAC inauguration and conference, added, “The recognition of aging roles in the development of cancer expands the theoretic paradigm for cancer. The meaning of aging here is more pathological, rather than merely a reflection of age,” said Ren. “Finding aberrant factors that allow cancerous cells to grow, spread, and resist therapies will not only shed new lights on the understanding of cancer but provide new opportunities for effective therapy and prevention. We will continue to work together to fight the global challenge of cancer.” Over the last several years, the SWCRF initiated a focus on aging and cancer. In 2018, the Foundation partnered with the National Cancer Institute and National Institute on Aging for a two-year, $3 million intramural and extramural research collaboration. In 2019, the SWCRF partnered with Wiley to publish a new scientific peerreviewed open access journal titled Aging and Cancer that is focused on understanding how the process of aging is linked to cancer. Waxman approached China’s clinical and research leaders in 2015 about establishing an international research center after many years of working with investigators on cancer research. His collaboration which started in the 1980s developed a cure for Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL), a once deadly form of leukemia. The treatment with a greater than 95 percent success rate has led to many more discoveries that have improved the lives of those dealing with cancer. Last year, Dr. Samuel Waxman was honored with the prestigious Jacobi Medallion from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. This recognition represents Dr. Waxman’s dedication to clinical and research excellence and the trust placed in him by so many throughout his distinguished career as an oncologist, hematologist, research scientist, founder, and CEO of the SWCRF. MONEY MATTERS

RETIREMENT PLANNING HOW TO KEEP AFLOAT DURING THE PANDEMIC By Albert Lalonde

OVID-19 took a heavy toll on the U.S. economy in 2020, causing millions of job losses and forcing many businesses to close. It also affected lots of retirement plans in the process. A survey by the Pew Research Center found that 36 percent of Americans who save regularly are saving less because of the pandemic, and one-third said they’ve had to dip into their retirement savings to pay bills. This is unsettling news. But there is good news. Vaccines for COVID-19 bring hope for a return to a more stable world. The economy has shown signs of recovering. While much economic uncertainty remains in the months ahead, there are some essential things you can do in the new year to help your retirement savings.

CUSTOMIZE YOUR BUDGET

Remember to pay yourself first. Be sure to have three things within your budget: how much you’re taking in after taxes, how much you’re spending, and how much you’re saving. If you’re not sure where your money is going, track spending using a spreadsheet or an online budgeting app for 60 days. Determine how much money you need to cover your fixed monthly expenses and how much you’d like to put away for other goals such as retirement. The rule of thumb is to save 10–15 percent of pre-tax income, including any employer match, starting in your 20s for retirement. If you delay, add about 10 percent for every decade missed. Review your emergency funds and have four to six months’ worth of essential living expenses set aside in a savings vehicle.

MANAGE YOUR DEBT

For most people, some debt level is a practical necessity; however, problems arise when debt becomes the master, not the other way around. To stay in charge, keep your total debt load manageable. Don’t confuse what you can borrow with what you should borrow. Keep the monthly costs of owning a home (principal, interest, taxes, and insurance) below 28 percent of your pre-tax income and your total monthly debt below 36 percent of your pre-tax income. Eliminate high-cost, non-deductible consumer debt, and avoid borrowing to purchase depreciating assets. Try to pay off credit card debt and consider merging your debt into a lowrate Home Equity Loan or Line of Credit (HELOC).

OPTIMIZE YOUR PORTFOLIO

We all share the goal of achieving better investment results. Create a written plan that will help you stay disciplined in all kinds of markets. Focus foremost on your overall investment mix. After committing to a savings plan, how you invest is your next important decision. Have a targeted asset allocation—that is, the overall mix of stocks, bonds, and cash in your portfolio. Make sure it’s still in sync with your long-term objectives, risk tolerance, and time horizon. Diversification can help reduce risk and be a critical factor in reaching your goals but consider taxes. Place relatively taxefficient investments, like ETFs and municipal bonds, in taxable accounts, and put relatively tax-inefficient assets, like mutual funds and Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITS) in tax-advantaged accounts. Tax-advantaged accounts include retirement accounts, such as a Traditional or Roth Individual Retirement Account (IRA). If you trade frequently, do so in taxadvantaged versions to help reduce your tax bill.

PROTECT YOUR ESTATE

An estate plan may seem like something only for the wealthy, but there are simple steps everyone should take, especially after a year we just went through. Without proper beneficiary designations, a will, and other essential measures, attorneys, probate courts, and tax agencies may decide the fate of your estate or minor. Review your beneficiaries, especially for retirement accounts, annuities, and life insurance. The beneficiary designation is your first line of defense. Therefore, keep information on beneficiaries up-to-date to ensure the proceeds of life insurance policies and retirement accounts are consistent with your wishes, your will, and other documents. Update or prepare your will and remember that it isn’t just about transferring assets. It can provide for your dependents’ support and care and help you avoid the costs and delays associated with dying without one (intestate). We recommend working with an experienced lawyer or estate planning attorney. If your estate is large and complex and you want to spell out how your estate should be used in detail, consider a revocable living trust. The cost for a revocable living trust is typically more expensive. Next, have in place durable powers of attorney for health care or patient advocate assignments. In these documents, appoint trusted and competent individuals to decide on your behalf if you become incapacitated. Make sure they understand your medical wishes. Lastly, take care of important estate documents. Remember, you don’t have to do everything at once. There’s a lot you can do to improve your financial health. Take one step at a time and continuously make minor improvements throughout the year. WEEKEND BRUNCH DINING IN THE CITY YOU LOVE By Patricia Canole

here are so many things to love about a weekend brunch, a meal where you can order breakfast bites like eggs (any style), pancakes, bacon on the side, or even savory dishes like burgers and BLTs. Add a Bloody Mary or Mimosa, and you have the fixings for the elements of a good meal—even in this age of pandemic. With indoor dining banned indefinitely, restaurants have been creative in their outdoor dining presentations. Heaters, enclosed greenhouses, bubble-like igloos make dining a more pleasurable experience for any New Yorker. So be adventurous and hit the brunch scene on Valentine’s Day weekend (or for that matter any weekend!). Here are two offerings that will not disappoint.

AMALI Located on the Upper East Side is Amali Restaurant. Former General Manager of Resto, James Mallios, opened this favorite farm-to-table Mediterranean restaurant ten years ago. Since then, it has received critical praise for its outstanding cuisine and sustainable practices from the James Beard Foundation, The New York Times, and most wine publications. The curated wine list consists of over 400 labels to please all tastes. The name Amali is inspired by a region encompassing much of the modern-day Mediterranean. It signifies the cultural commonality shared by many countries in the area. And although Amali’s indoor dining experience captures a comfy and modern-designed feel with rustic woods and a warm atmosphere, the outdoor space is just as inviting with a soothing ambiance and a menu to match. Executive Chef Alex Tubero’s menu draws its influences from classic ingredients such as seasonal vegetables, whole grains, olive oil, cheese, meat, and fish. What’s unique about Amali is it sources food the way they do in the Mediterranean— locally. It makes a difference in the food and dining experience. 46 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | FEBRUARY 2021

Executive Chef Alex Tubero

There is an excellent Santorini Breakfast with assorted cheeses and charcuterie and daily pastry or Shakshuka with tomato, hen eggs, and flatbread. For hearty appetites, try the Leg of Lamb Sandwich with mint, horseradish, and fries. The pasta portions range from an excellent Tagliatelle Bolognese with Parmigiano Reggiano to an addictive Frascatelli with calamari, red prawn, king crab, and breadcrumbs. Not to be outdone are the Smoked Trout and Cascun Farms Chicken entrée salads. Tiganethes with raw honey and candied walnut or Chocolate Cake are great choices to complete your dining adventure. It’s often difficult trying to find authentic-style Mediterranean food in Manhattan. Reserve a table at Amali for a farm-to-table dining experience that is sure to have you coming back for more. TEN HOPE WINTER GARDEN Ten Hope is a welcome addition to the Williamsburg neighborhood. Perched on Hope Street, it will instantly transport you away from a strained New York City and into a calm, little world in the shadow of the Williamsburg Bridge. Owner Bill Zanros, who has brought us Governor’s Beach Club and Ambrose Beer & Lobster, invites diners to the outdoor Winter Garden, a perfect setting for a weekend brunch with family and friends. The spacious vine-draped 2,500-square-foot patio is nestled next to the main restaurant, complete with heaters for dining comfort. Start in style with a Mimosa or Bloody Mary. Or perhaps a specialty cocktail will surprise and delight. A popular favorite is the Jalapeno Margarita, which balances a kick from its spice to the beverage’s natural sweetness. Wine and Champagne by the glass and bottle, as well as draft and bottled beer, are also on the menu.

Breakfast at Ten Hope Winter Garden

Executive Chef Travis McGinty’s hints of Mediterranean cuisine is undoubtedly noticed in the appetizer Mezze Platter of tahini hummus, whipped feta, babaganoush, and taramasalata served with freshly warmed flatbread and olive oil. The brunch entrees satisfy with Lemon Ricotta Pancakes and wild berry compote. For those who prefer taking a much more traditional route, opt for the 8 oz. Classic Cheeseburger topped with white American cheese, caramelized onion aioli, bread and butter pickles and a side of fries. The menu also features a tempting Breakfast Bowl of seasoned potatoes, sausage, gravy, mozzarella, poached egg topped with parsley oil. A splendid way to complete this meal: Cheesecake (of course!) with fruit compote.

THE COOP A NEW WAY TO DINE By Harry Brads

t didn’t take long for the owners of Southampton Social Club, Union Burger Bar, and Union Sushi & Steak to create a new concept in Southampton. Restaurateurs Ian Duke and David Hilty have opened the first ghost kitchen called The Coop. And, as food guru Ian puts it, The Coop serves chicken that is “scrumptious.” Within the Southampton Social Club (closed during the off-season but open for private events only), The Coop’s ghost kitchen enables customers to order delivery with curbside pickup via the website or phone. Besides the website menu, there are daily specials. While there will be no indoor or outdoor dining, The Coop will be available for catering small gatherings and events. “With the success of Union Burger Bar, it was absolutely part of crossing the idea of there being a ghost kitchen because of the number of take-out and to-go business we’ve done these past couple of months. Now that dining outside is nearly impossible, we think there’ll even be a further rise in people wanting to phone and order delivery,” Ian Duke says. “We’re excited because we’re keeping people employed. In fact, we’re employing more. We’re just trying to continue through this horrible pandemic.”

Available on Uber Eats, Grub Hub, and Door Dash, a variety of fried and rotisserie chicken options are featured with a wide assortment of sides. A few items to note that separate The Coop from others include the Barbecue Chicken Sandwich with Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce, chipotle mayo, cabbage, and apple slaw. The biscuits topped with Fried Chicken and covered in a rich sausage gravy are to die for, and the Fried Chicken Bowl brings mashed potatoes, fried chicken, corn, scallions, cheddar cheese, and rich gravy together for a dish best described as simply fantastic!

Wings with Bleu Cheese

You can also order as many as 100 wings for a party (the chef recommends the mango habanero sauce, but the others available include Louisiana hot sauce, teriyaki and BBQ), and that comes with homemade bleu cheese, celery, and carrots. The menu also consists of a Chicken Caesar Salad and Hamptons Wedge Salad with applewood bacon bits. Altogether, there are various sides, including biscuits, creamed and fresh corn, glazed honey carrots, mac and cheese, and sweet potato fries. Beverages include ice cream floats, soft drinks, house-made sweetened and unsweetened iced tea, bottled beer, wine, and sparkling cocktails.

A SUPER SUNDAY If you’re looking to cater an informal Super Bowl Sunday or a family dinner, consider The Coop. Delivery is available to New York City. The Dinner Party Package features an abundance of signature dishes, including 32 Wings with a choice of sauce; 12-piece satchel of Fried Chicken; 3 breasts, thighs, wings and drumsticks; one whole Rotisserie Chicken, and 6 large sides of your choice. “Ultimately, I find people always have conflicting perspectives on what they want to eat. What we’re doing is incorporating the best of both worlds. There’s the ridiculously great tasting fried chicken and the mashed potatoes with gravy and creamy corn,” Ian says. “But we’re also going to have the healthy rotisserie chicken with fresh sides like Brussels sprouts and roasted broccoli that are all farm to table. The chicken that we’re using is cage-free, antibiotic-free, and hormone-free. There’s something for everybody.” Despite the pandemic and shutdowns, owner Ian Duke has soldiered on during these challenging times. Along with The Coop, he and his team have launched the awardwinning Sushi and Steak in Southampton and the smash hit outdoor restaurant The Baylander (built on an actual aircraft carrier) on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. These plus the team’s Southampton Social Club, Lucky’s Famous Burgers, Prohibition Live Music Bar, and Union Burger Bar complete the culinary package. L’AMICO

ARTISANAL PIZZA AND MORE By Anne Raso

tep into L’Amico, and you will feel like you’re in a cozy mountain cabin and industrial downtown loft at the same time! With its two gorgeous copper-clad wood ovens, the kitchen presents a comfortable setting with high-beamed ceilings, pendant lighting, mahogany tables, and cozy booths. And at press time, there are plenty of seating arrangements with heating devices, too. Having pizza at L’Amico is a must, and I place it on my NYC Top Ten Pizza list. You can get anything from mushrooms and truffles to homemade tomato sauce and fresh mozzarella on your pie—and one is big enough to cover two people for lunch or dinner. I tried the no-sauce pizza with truffles and assorted mushrooms, and I dream of going back for another one! And if pasta is more your “ultimate food,” know that it’s made fresh every day with at least a dozen variations. At the helm of L’Amico is renowned Executive Chef Laurent Tourondel, whose experience is a mixed bag that ranges from cooking in the French Navy to five-star French eateries (and beyond)! He tells New York Lifestyles, “My culinary background is Italian. Growing up, I would help my Italian grandmother with her famous Sunday suppers; however, my culinary education is Classic French. One of the first positions I held was as Chef to the Admiral of the French Navy. I traveled to London where I worked at the famed Gentleman’s Club, Boodles, and worked under notable chefs at Troisgros and Restaurant Ledoyen in France, and Restaurant Mercury at the Hotel InterContinental in Moscow. I decided to plant my Italian roots in New York and, in 2015, opened L’Amico.”

THE SECRET’S IN THE DOUGH We asked Chef Laurent the most popular menu favorites, and he replied, “Definitely octopus, the Malfadine Vongle, and our pizza, of course! Other than our wood-burning ovens, what makes our pizza so special is the temperature and humidity of the dough during the proofing process.”

Farmer’s Pizza

Let’s add right here that L’Amico serves many American classic comfort food dishes, including what is arguably the best Marinated Skirt Steak over sautéed escarole. There’s also a killer burger, BBQ meats, and poultry cooked over wood. Desserts are large and shareable, with the warm, soft Apple Tart with homemade gelato and legendary Tiramisu being popular choices. Of course, with COVID, it’s not been easy for any New York restaurant this past year. But with a creative spirit, they have endured. “We have increased deliveries, which is a big change and something we haven’t done before,” he explained. “We have added temperature checks stations for staff and guests, as well as hand sanitizing stations. We also extended our outdoor patio by building an enclosed seating structure and added heat lamps to them.” Located in the Eventi Hotel (at 30th Street and Sixth Avenue), L’Amico has a random mixture of clientele. Chef Laurent reveals, “In the past, our clients have been a mix of business- people, locals, and tourists. We would also get many event-goers since we are a stone’s throw away from MSG—show nights were big nights! Now, due to current world events, we are seeing a lot of foot traffic coming in and local neighborhood folks.” What does Executive Chef Laurent look forward to in the future for his beloved and chic eatery? It’s simple: “I’m looking forward to everything going back to normal after COVID and cooking for our regular clientele. We will be back stronger!” Executive Chef Laurent Tourondel

COMING SOON What dishes are being added at L’Amico for the first quarter of 2021? Executive Chef Laurent says that they are being developed as we go to press, but fans of the eatery should “keep an eye out on our website or Instagram.” L’Amico is a winner for many reasons, but the most obvious ones are the freshness and authenticity of the cuisine, a friendly and accommodating wait staff, a warm rustic setting with plenty of leg space at your table, and huge portions that can be shared. L’Amico is consistent with quality and portion size and welcomes individuals just wanting to come in and sit at the elegant bar after work as well as families. (Happy Hour is officially 5 to 9 pm every day, and it’s an excellent opportunity to share appetizers like Peekytoe Crab Crostino and highly creative artisanal drinks like the gin-based L’Amico Negroni.) Sunday brunch is a real deal at $12-$23 per entrée. For more information on L’Amico, visit lamico.nyc. • FEBRUARY 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 49

WHISKEY OR WHISKY

EITHER WAY IT’S ALWAYS A FAVORITE By Jeff & Stephanie Sylva

cotch, Bourbon, and Rye. Most people are somewhat familiar with these spirits. But then there are Irish Whiskey and Canadian Whisky and a whole host of other countries. Let’s see if we can simplify things. First, the spelling: One commonly held school of thought is “whiskey” is used in the U.S. and Ireland, while “whisky” is used in every other whiskyproducing country. THE USA Let’s begin with American whiskeys, of which several types and some federal regulations are governing the distillation of American whiskeys. Bourbon whiskey must be produced from a mash that comprises at least 51 percent corn, and like most American whiskeys, must be distilled to no more than 80 percent alcohol by volume (note: this is not the final bottle proof) and barreled at no more than 125 proof. Only water may be added, with no coloring or flavoring. And as with all the American whiskeys, except corn whiskey (often referred to as moonshine) and Tennessee whiskey, they must be aged in new charred oak barrels. Let’s clear up one misconception about Bourbon. Some may insist that Bourbon has to be made in Kentucky—it doesn’t. Just look at the proliferation of micro-distilleries opening throughout the U.S. and the many fine Bourbons they are creating. But if they want to put Bourbon on their label, they must follow the regulations mentioned above, and they can’t call it “Kentucky Bourbon.” SCOTLAND Like the U.S., Scotland has government regulations for production of Scotch whisky. The two most significant being that the whisky must be distilled in Scotland (seems reasonable considering the label is using the term “Scotch”), and the spirit must be aged a minimum of three years in oak casks. Although the process that gives Scotch its distinctive flavor is a closely guarded secret, much is attributed to Scottish distilleries’ soft water and the introduction of peat in the kiln or oven in which the malt is dried, giving the malt its distinctive smoky flavor. CANADA This whisky style includes the very popular Crown Royal, Canadian Club, and Seagram’s brands. It must be produced and aged in Canada, be distilled from a fermented mash of cereal grain, and be aged in wood barrels for not less than three years. There are few other restrictions beyond these. IRELAND Finally, another famous whiskey in the U.S. is Irish Whiskey. Typically distilled three times, Irish Whiskey must be produced in Ireland and be aged in wooden casks for no less than three years (although it is relatively longer than that). Unpeated malt (you know the Irish have to distinguish themselves from the Brits or Scots) is almost always used. • 50 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | FEBRUARY 2021

GREAT BITES DEEP FUDGE BROWNIE By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman

rom The Big Game to Valentine’s Day, February is an incredible month to be a lover of all-things food. For Valentine’s Day, I love to make my wife a special dinner or dessert. And knowing how tired people are of take-out and outdoor dining in the cold, I thought this month I would focus on one simple thing: A Deep Fudge Brownie! This may sound more pedestrian than normal for me, but when it comes to brownies, this is far from the norm! Ingredients 1 cup unsalted butter (melted and hot) 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 cup white sugar 1 ¼ cup packed light brown sugar 4 large white eggs, at room temperature 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (needs to be high quality) 8 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips ½ teaspoon of confectioner’s sugar per brownie for dusting Preparation Preheat oven to 350°F and grease an 8x12-inch baking pan with either butter or cooking oil spray. Whisk together melted butter, oil and sugars in a medium-size bowl until well-combined. Add the eggs and vanilla, beating for about a minute (until the color turns light brown). Sift in flour, cocoa powder and salt. Gently stir the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until JUST combined (do not over mix as it will make the brownies less fudgy). Stir in 3/4 of the chocolate pieces. Spread batter into baking pan, using a spatula to even out the top. Sprinkle on remaining semi-sweet chips. Bake for 30 minutes for a very fudgy texture (you want to make sure that the chocolate is set; gently shift the pan to make sure that it doesn’t jiggle). If you prefer more cake-like brownies, bake for an additional 10-15 minutes. Remove from oven and sit on counter for 15 minutes. Once cooled, cut evenly in 2-inch squares. As you want to be sure your brownie is served in the best possible way, buy a heart-shaped cookie cutter. Place the heart brownie on a plate, dusting with confectioners’ sugar. For an extra special display, dust the plate around the heart brownie with red sanding sugar. Bon Appetit!

Late one night, while posting a dating video, she receives an unexpected response from the polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, one of the most iconic leaders of the 20th century. Shipwrecked and stranded on an iceberg in the Antarctic, Shackleton reaches across space and time to share his heroic journey with her. Against all odds, they discover that their greatest inspiration lies within each other.

Taking its inspiration from Shakespeare, this hilarious romp recounts the backstage and on-stage antics of two feuding romances during an out-of-town tryout for a musical adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew. This Tony winner for “Best Revival” stars Brent Barrett, Rachel York, Nancy Anderson, and Michael Berresse as the squabbling couples whose offstage disputes entangle them with a pair of songand-dance gangsters and a pompous U.S. Army General.

But little do they know the anonymous pen pals they have both been falling for happen to be each other! Will love blossom once their identities are finally revealed?

FROM HERE TO ETERNITY

AN AMERICAN IN PARIS

Pearl Harbor, 1941. When the troubled Private Prewitt falls for the kind-hearted escort club girl Lorene and his platoon sergeant, Warden, embarks on a dangerous affair with his commanding officer’s wife, Karen, the lives of both men are set on a course, they cannot control. From Here To Eternity, Sir Tim Rice’s epic new musical is adapted from one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century, a gripping tale of illicit love and army life, which translates into a breath-taking, romantic, and excitingly original show.

This breathtakingly beautiful Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, inspired by the Oscar-winning MGM film, tells the impassioned story of discovering love in the City of Light. Jerry Mulligan is an American GI striving to make it as a painter in a city suddenly bursting with hope and possibility. Following a chance encounter with a beautiful young dancer named Lise, Paris’s streets become the backdrop to a sensuous, modern romance of art, friendship, and love in the aftermath of war.

ROMEO & JULIET

MISS SAIGON

Set in Verona, Italy, this is the tragic story of two star-crossed lovers. The Capulets and the Montagues have been engaged in an ancient feud that has been lost to time. However, when Romeo of the house of Montague and Juliet of the house of Capulet meet and fall in love, nothing can stop them from being together, not even death. Starring Orlando Bloom & Condola Rashad.

The spectacular 25th Anniversary Gala Performance of this acclaimed new production of the global stage sensation was described as “the most thrilling, soaring and emotionally stirring musical with magnificent performances” by the Daily Telegraph and “the greatest musical of all time” by the Daily Mail. Starring Tony Award nominee Eva Noblezada, the epic love story tells the tragic tale of young bar girl Kim, orphaned by war, who falls in love with American GI Chris—but their lives are torn apart by the fall of Saigon.

THE KING AND I This gorgeous musical tells the story of the tempestuous relationship between the King of Siam (played by Tony Award nominee Ken Watanabe) and Anna (played by Tony Award winner Kelli O’Hara), a British schoolteacher whom he invites to teach his many wives and children. With one of the finest scores ever written, including “Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Getting to Know You,” and “Shall We Dance,” and featuring a company of over 50 world-class performers, The King and I is a testament to the lavish heritage of gloriously romantic musical theater. • FEBRUARY 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 53

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

ON THE SMALL SCREEN By Jenny Peters

BIG MOVIES PIVOT TO SMALL SCREENS BARB & STAR GO TO VISTA DEL MAR Lionsgate/On Demand Like most of the movies included here, Barb & Star Go to Vista del Mar was expected to be a big box-office hit for Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo. That pair scored an Oscar nomination for their first screenwriting collaboration, 2011’s Bridesmaids. This comedy is their follow up, as they co-star as sheltered Midwestern gals who head to Florida for a fun-in-the-sun getaway that goes hilariously wrong in every way. BLITHE SPIRIT IFC Films/On Demand Noel Coward’s timeless comedy of séances, ghosts, and assorted craziness returns yet again to the screen, this time with Judi Dench playing wacky Madame Acarti and Dan Stevens as the novelist with two wives (one alive, one not so much). Isla Fisher and Leslie Mann round out the lunacy here; and once you’ve seen this one, try David Lean’s 1945 classic Oscar-winning take, too, with Margaret Rutherford and Rex Harrison in fine form. JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH HBO Max The Oscars are odd this year, as films releasing until February 28, 2021, are eligible for 2020 nominations. This intense movie that is getting a lot of late-entry traction follows the Black Panther movement in ‘60s Illinois and is inspired by true events. It stars LaKeith Stanfield, Daniel Kaluuya, Jesse Plemons, and Martin Sheen and is directed by first-time helmer Shaka King. MALCOLM & MARIE Netflix Emotional highs and lows hit this couple as they celebrate an important day. Emmy winner Zendaya and John David Washington star in this romantic two-hander shot during COVID-19 restrictions. They are the only people we see throughout this film which was originally planned for theatrical release. THE UNITED STATES VS. BILLIE HOLIDAY Hulu Andra Day stars—and sings—in this fact-based story of Billie Holiday’s fraught relationship with the FBI throughout the ‘40s and ‘50s. Oscar nominee Lee Daniels directs this disturbing, emotional look at what one of the world’s greatest singers went through in the years before the Civil Rights movement took hold in America. Trevante Rhodes and Natasha Lyonne co-star. 54 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | FEBRUARY 2021

TELEVISION REBOOTS CLARICE CBS In this movie-to-TV reboot, FBI agent Clarice Starling, familiar from The Silence of the Lambs 1991 film and the earlier 1988 novel, is back at work, one year after facing off with serial killer Hannibal Lecter. Starring Rebecca Breeds as the woman whose bravery is tempered by her emotional fragility, this series has her chasing down other bad guys (and gals). THE EQUALIZER CBS Queen Latifah takes over the role that Edward Woodward made his own in the 1980s and Denzel Washington took to the big screen in two outings in the 2010s. She’s doing the same shtick, as a former CIA operative now acting as a vigilante and avenger secretly fighting the evil forces of big city New York. SUPERMAN & LOIS The CW It may seem like Superman & Lois never actually left, but this reboot of the 1993 TV series Lois and Clark sets itself apart by having the superhero now married to Lois and with two sons to raise. They live in Smallville (naturally), where evil is lurking. Emmanuelle Chriqui and Dylan Walsh join leads Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch in this oft-told, actionpacked love story.

ACTORS TURNED FILM DIRECTORS FALLING Quiver/On Demand What does a successful actor do when he turns 60? Directs a movie, of course! At least that’s what Viggo Mortensen did, with Falling. He also stars in his debut-directing outing which is a drama of a gay family man whose conservative elderly father (Lance Henriksen) moves in and makes everyone miserable. LAND Focus Features/On Demand Actress Robin Wright took her time settling into a film director’s chair (she’s 54), but she spent hours practicing on the set of House of Cards, getting 10 episodes at the helm under her belt there. In Land, Wright also stars, as a woman at the edge of her rope, choosing to face death in the wilderness to life in the rat race. • FEBRUARY 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 55

NEW YORK, NY

ENTREPRENEUR’S CORNER DAVID NOTO, ALTANEVE PROSECCO By Lori Simmons Zelenko

hances are you’ve sipped Altaneve the luxury Prosecco exquisitely crafted by former financier David Noto, perhaps at a favorite restaurant sitting elbow to elbow with Justin Timberlake (an Altaneve fan)? Or maybe cheering on a random royal at a Polo match out East? Or even imbibing at a film festival filled with personalities whose names resonate around the globe. Altaneve Prosecco is beautiful in its presentation, elegant and award-winning, and has been deemed “Best Prosecco in The World” by The Wall Street Journal Marketwatch. As told by the charming entrepreneur who brought it stateside from the snowcapped mountains in the north of Italy, the story behind this Italian sparkler intrigues as much as this effervescent wine’s delicious taste. Dividing his time between New York City and Italy, David Noto’s constant companion is his Jack Russell Terrier, named Caoilie, a presence during wine-making and at all but the most glamorous of tastings. This pup is a true connoisseur who like his owner, joyfully embraces all that life—and Prosecco—has to offer. Let’s start at the beginning. Why did you start making Prosecco? The answer is simple. Prosecco is my favorite wine. But there is more to it than that. I grew up in a wine-making family, where my father was the first generation that did not make wine, so instead of making it, he taught me about it: wine regions and varieties. After careers in the business world—engineering, finance, etc.—I was unhappy with my life direction. So, I looked for something more meaningful and gratifying. This quest led me to an Executive MBA, and after graduation, I did some soul searching - that’s when I chose to start producing my favorite wine: Prosecco! We launched Altaneve informally in the USA in 2012. 58 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | FEBRUARY 2021

How did the name Altaneve come about? When searching for a name for my new company/brand, I knew I didn’t want to use my family name, but rather one that was unique and evoked wonderful imagery. My father and I came up with “Altaneve” because it was reminiscent of the Dolomites’ snow-capped peaks that you can see above the Valdobbiadene vineyards. With Altaneve, you have crafted a luxury positioning. What was your thinking in separating your brand from the Prosecco pack? As it turns out, when I launched the company nine years ago, there was no other company that was targeting the luxury segment of Prosecco, especially in the U.S., so the positioning turned out to be a perfect fit. It was apparent from the start that if I were to make the highest quality Prosecco, crafted in the most exclusive Prosecco-producing region, I could not cut corners; the only way to make the company feasible was to target the luxury market. You chose specific terrain to grow and harvest the grapes for Altaneve. What are some advantages of the land in this part of Italy? In the whole Prosecco growing region, Valdobbiadene is the only town to have tall mountains immediately behind it on two sides, which trap the salt-laden rain clouds as they roll across the Veneto plain. Hence, the rainfall continually replenishes the salinity in the limestone soil. The town’s soil contains magnesium, dolomite, and quartz, adding an extraordinary floral elegance and a complex minerality to our wines. By contrast, Prosecco made from grapes grown in other regions are very fruity and often lack depth and complexity. This terroir yields the wine we launched initially, Prosecco Superiore DOCG (the highest certification of Prosecco), which has a highly refined taste and complexity. And more recently, we released a Prosecco DOC, which retains the crispness and fine bubbles of its other siblings, but at a lower price point. A sparkling red will be coming in 2022. We also have Altaneve Z, the pinnacle of what Prosecco wine can be. We only produce 1,500 bottles each year of this wine, which offers both the depth and complexity of a Champagne while maintaining the signature crisp freshness of a great Prosecco. Altaneve parallels Champagne in some respects, yet there are differences. Help us understand what sets your Prosecco apart. I love Champagne, and I appreciate the comparison, but Prosecco and Champagne are entirely different. However, the exceptional Glera grapes, the selective hand harvesting, and the longer fermentation process used to produce Altaneve give our wine more complexity and a softer, more delicate bubble. These features do more closely resemble champagne than our peers’ Proseccos. If there are three things to remember about Altaneve, I would like all who enjoy our wine to understand and appreciate that our Prosecco is highest-in-quality, natural (no additives), and healthy (low in sulfites and calories). However, I also think these are the tenets of great wines everywhere, so Altaneve is pleased to be considered among the coveted brands found on the shelves of fine wine and spirits shops, among them New York City’s esteemed Sherry-Lehman. MY NEW YORK STORY

MARIA DI RENDE, ENZO’S OF ARTHUR AVENUE By Patricia Canole

ou’ll often find Maria Di Rende, a mother of five, making the rounds at Enzo’s Restaurant of Arthur Avenue. Nearly three years ago, Maria became a full-on restaurateur after her husband, Enzo, suddenly died. But with hard work and family support, Maria is preserving his legacy while introducing her own ideas to the restaurant. Since her husband’s passing, she has taken charge of the business while raising their five daughters. She has stayed true to Enzo’s mission but has now added her own vision. “You must always have a sense of purpose in what you do,” she told us, recalling how she got through those tough moments. “My reason was to make sure that what my husband wanted would continue.” After Enzo’s death, Maria had a lot to learn. Yes, she was apprehensive. But the operations came naturally. She could count on family support—her aunt, uncle, and cousin—and trust them with important tasks, like menu specials. Maria often thinks about being the head of the family business, a role never considered for her grandmother and mother. The secret to success is something she’s learned on the job, and it comes from within. “I tell my daughters to do what you think is best and prove it to yourself,” she said. New York Lifestyles met with Maria recently and learned even more about this fascinating woman. 60 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | FEBRUARY 2021

Maria Di Rende

Tell us about growing up in the Belmont section of The Bronx. My grandparents first immigrated from Calabria, Italy, and settled in the Bronx. They started working in the food industry, making mozzarella for the Calabria Pork Store on Arthur Avenue. My grandfather was affectionately known as the ‘mozzarella man’ around the neighborhood. The store is now owned and operated by my brother Peter and has become famous for its visual sausage chandelier. When I was 16, Arthur Avenue was where I met Enzo whose family was also from the neighborhood because he worked at his father›s restaurant. After your marriage to Enzo, was it a given that you both would open a restaurant on Arthur Avenue? Since Enzo graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, he always dreamt of opening his own business. Originally, Enzo’s of Arthur Avenue first opened as a café named Café Pompeo with approximately 30 seats in 1991. Café Pompeo then expanded, was renamed, and became a restaurant, Enzo’s of Arthur Avenue, in 2005 with about 50 seats. We expanded the restaurant once more to 180 seats due to increased demand in 2016. The restaurant became known for some of his signature dishes, including fried meatballs, eggplant parmigiana, and stuffed calamari, some neighborhood favorites.

Even if this year has been an extremely tough year for the restaurant and hospitality industry, we’re resilient and are here to stay.

Enzo’s Pizza

During the early years of your marriage, with Enzo as chef/owner, it must have been challenging for you to be bringing up a family of five girls. Were you involved with the restaurant at that point? During the early years of Enzo’s of Arthur Avenue, I was a full-time mother of our five young daughters—Isabella, Juliana, Victoria, Gabriella, and Francesca—while Enzo worked at the restaurant. Although I didn’t have a formalized position at the restaurant, we helped and spent time together as a family whenever we could. After Enzo’s passing, was there any question about keeping the restaurant and continuing the tradition? I knew I wanted to continue the tradition for both Enzo and my daughters. I knew it would be a challenge, but I wanted to do it to honor him and his hard work and passion for the culinary arts. Enzo put his life into the restaurant for our family, and I was going to do the same. Today, more challenges: The pandemic has created one hurdle after another for restaurants all over the city? But it seems after my brief visit to Enzo’s and Arthur Avenue, I sensed that everyone looks out for one another. We are like family here. We are all family businesses—many of which have spanned over multiple generations and some for over a century. We all love what we do. We want this area to thrive because it’s our livelihood. What is your hope for Enzo’s? I hope Enzo’s continues its successful path and becomes a household name. Enzo’s has a very loyal customer following, and I hope for that to grow even more. I would hope for the restaurant to expand on the quality that Enzo created. With the newly opened Enzo’s On The Go in the Arthur Avenue Retail Market across the street, we sell our fresh pasta and other dishes so that customers can also enjoy Enzo’s at home. Even if this year has been an extremely tough year for the restaurant and hospitality industry, we’re resilient and are here to stay. What are your signature dishes at Enzo’s? Do you offer seasonal options? Our most famous dish is our Fried Meatballs appetizer and the Pork Chop Alla Enzo with hot vinegar peppers. Every day we have different specials and incorporate the freshest products available within each season. Have your daughters expressed an interest in being involved with restaurant life? “My oldest daughter Isabella currently works at the restaurant and helps out whenever it is needed. Juliana helps make pasta at the restaurant too. As much as the five of them love the restaurant, their future is their own choice to make.” Well said, Maria!

A NEW YORK RANT MUSIC IS THE GREAT UNITER By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman

ome of my fondest childhood memories are singing along with my mother in the car to classics like “Johnny B. Goode” by Chuck Berry, “Blue Suede Shoes” by Elvis Presley, “Cupid” by Sam Cooke, and many, many more. With my father, music was more centered around the ’60s and ’70s hitmakers like Chicago, Cream, Hendrix, Joplin, Dylan, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. My obsession only furthered my fascination with music for Michael Jackson, Madonna, and the one-hit wonders of the Decade of Decadence. In other words, my parents made sure I had an incredibly diverse upbringing concerning music genres and types. It didn’t matter if it was a Beethoven symphony, a tune from the Swing era, or the earliest Rap hits. My parents made sure I understood music’s importance from a historical and pop culture perspective. It wasn’t about entertainment. It was about history and the “time capsule” effect that certain songs provide.

A LYRICAL HISTORY

Think about Don McLean’s “American Pie” whose overall thematic centered on the loss of innocence of the early Rock ‘n Roll generation (“the day the music died” refers to the tragic 1959 plane crash that took the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper). For a more contemporary example, think about the outrage by Democrats that President George W. Bush was making war in Iraq at the beginning of this century, which led to Green Day’s “American Idiot.” And a lot of my fellow “Why Bother”-generation (GenX) was raised the same way. However, in my experience, most Millennials and GenZ members have a limited understanding of Rock ‘n Roll history, let alone popular music, at least other than what they learn by watching older acts promoting their latest releases on American Idol or America’s Got Talent. So, my issue and consequent rant, is why did younger Baby Boomer and older GenX parents fail so miserably in raising their Millennial and GenZ children with an understanding and appreciation of music? The 21st century might have been vastly different for our city, let alone our country, if they had.

Madonna

TOGETHER WITH MUSIC As an example, there is one thing that I think we can all agree on; music is the great uniter. Think about it. From festivals to concerts to even listening parties, music is the rarest of the rare in terms of bringing people together. And while the music festival business has exploded in the last 20 years, that had nothing to do with bringing people together but rather everything to do with corporate and music industry greed. At least with 1985’s We Are The World, Farm Aid, and Live Aid, it was more about helping to stop famine and bring about awareness of those nations, and populations, that were suffering from starvation (what the PC crowd ridiculously refers to as “food insecurity” in developed nations). Yes, this generation has operations like the Global Citizens Festival, which on its face seems altruistic (I will not dive into the politics behind this one right now). But that is one example amongst a plethora of corporate-driven festivals that only seek one thing—profitability. Remember, music and music history help children perform better in mathematics, the sciences, and composition. Why on God’s green earth do we fail to provide our children with experiences in such an essential aspect of life? Music is a unique historical glance at the period those songs were written. To ignore music is to divide people and shun the lessons history has tried to teach us. That may explain why we are in the mess we are. Chuck Berry

Here’s to hoping that the next generation will have a better appreciation of such an important part of our lives—and the past. •

TIME OUT WITH… HANNAH FASTOV, DESIGNER By Bailey Beckett

he’s the CEO and founder of Go Dash Dot, who previously worked in merchandising and product development for highend fashion houses. Today, she has created a virtual market for something truly versatile: stylish bags for women that go from workout to go out. With a collection that includes totes, backpacks, crossbodies and her own signature Puffle (a re-imagined duffel worn as a hand-shoulder or crossbody bag), Go Dash Dot has generated a loyal fan base. “I knew Go Dash Dot was going to work when I saw people reacting to the bags precisely the same way I did when I came up with the concept—immediately understanding the necessity of a bag like ours.” Fastov went on to tell us, “My inspiration comes from major fashion houses. We look for trending silhouettes and fabrications and then redesign them to fit the Go Dash Dot aesthetic—fashionable, functional, yet timeless.” Of course, the young designer will always listen to the advice and opinions of others. “As a young, female entrepreneur with minimal business experience, I often felt overwhelmed and underqualified to be making business decisions. But I have learned that no one knows Go Dash Dot better than me.”

A TRIBUTE TO NYC Fastov’s latest design is dedicated to New York City. “I wanted to create something that celebrates the strength of New York while reflecting the humanity we showed during the worst of 2020,” she recently told New York Lifestyles. Speaking on a Zoom call, the young entrepreneur is her usual peppy and confident self and told us she’s debuting her very first dedicated creation. The New York Rose Tote, a bag honoring her hometown and its strength and perseverance and especially its people who showed courage during the worst of the pandemic. How times have changed. It was just a year ago Fastov presented her new collection for 2020—a series of stylish and functional bags including the signature Puffle which instantly became the go-to bag. While bags are aplenty, Go Dash Dot had an angle: its creations could serve every part of your day: morning, afternoon and night, whether at work, the gym, social occasions, even travel and vacations. Spacious, with pockets galore, the bags could fit laptops, workout gear, water bottles and just about anything you need in your day-to-day life.

Hannah Fastov

A FLORAL INSPIRATION But it was the pandemic that forced Fastov to change course. The “girl on the go” had indeed stopped. As she saw the world change before her eyes, the now 30-year-old leader was inspired by what she witnessed beyond the headlines: humanity and braveness in such tragedy. Specifically, New York where she resides on the Upper East Side responded to the pandemic. “The New York Rose Tote celebrates the resiliency of this city,” says Fastov. “We got each other through it, which is what New Yorkers do every day. We may have been beaten down, but we are resilient and will come back stronger than ever.” Fastov named the bag after the Lenten Rose, a flower that grows in New York under the harshest conditions. “The rose starts to bloom during the last six weeks of winter signaling the start of a new season, a new beginning,” says Fastov. “That is exactly what our limited-edition New York Rose symbolizes. The start of a new beginning.” The limited-edition Jet-Black design (a shade Go Dash Dot never used until now) includes special features like all Go Dash Dot bags.
