Jason Aldean And Country’s Elite Take

A PRELUDE TO SUMMER IS HERE!

You have to love a magazine cover that features an award-winning, number one performing singer like Jason Aldean, headlining Barefoot Country Music Festival, as a way to celebrate the start to summer!

Now, let’s talk about that summer plan, shall we? I have always looked at each month in the late winter through mid-spring as an investment into the next month, all building into a crescendo of beauty, warmth and seasonal bliss as summer arrives. Think about it this way – we have always said “April showers bring May flowers.” And as we approach the unofficial kickoff to summer, Memorial Day, we have poured an enormous amount of information into this issue to help you achieve that crescendo!

“A Prelude to Summer” is all about getting our readers ready for summer. It’s packed with event lists, tips and tricks, new product reviews, recipes, and more to help prepare you for the most fun time of year. As an example, you will find a story about summer weekend planning that talks about how to properly map out your groceries and entertainment so you can have the most fun, delicious summer while still tackling those backyard BBQs, pool parties and at home soirees! Even in my Great Bites column, with our friends at FreshDirect, we included recipes for everything from Cinco de Mayo to Memorial Day.

Don’t forget to check out our newly expanded Health and Wellness section, as well as some of our travel stories including ever popular and incredible regional destinations like The Mill House and The George. My friend, Dr. Jennifer Ashton even got in on the fun again this issue with her story about the Faux-Po to help get your hair runway-ready for that summer bash.

And for my fellow Star Wars fans, “May the Fourth Be With You!”

Stay Real. Keep Rockin’.

PUBLISHER’S LETTER

A TASTE OF SUMMER IN THE AIR

May is the perfect time of year when being outdoors never felt so good. It’s when nature awakens our senses and infuses the air with the sweet fragrance of blossoms. It’s also a time when family and friends do special evenings in the park or on rooftops to watch classic movies and enjoy their sweet tooth snacks. In a city so culturally rich there are so many museum exhibitions, art shows to explore, and a array of dance performances, live music and Broadway shows to take in.

I don’t care if you have a little country in your blood or your a two steppin bull riding maniac. The Barefoot Country Music Fest is circling its wagons once again for the fifth year in a row and landing back on the beaches of Wildwood NJ. It will once again turn the Jersey shore into the must place to be.

With such superstar power of Jason Aldean, the one and only Jelly Roll, and the undeniable talents of Lainey Wilson, Rascal Flatts, Boyz II Men and so many more. Four days and nights of all the country music your body can absorb, try that in a small town.

If your the sporting type like myself, why not make a visit to Yankee Stadium and cheer on our hometown favorite Bronx Bombers. While your there you have to try some of their new culinary offerings. The food experience once again has been elevated with the delicious dumpling delights from the Brooklyn Dumpling Shop, savory BBQ from Mighty Quinn’s and let’s not forget a true fan favorite Petrone’s tiramisu in a souvenir Yankee helmet and so much more. To read all about this culinary grand slam see our food feature “Take me out to the ballgame” inside this issue.

Of course, May is for recognizing the woman who loved, cared and made you what you are today: Mothers. Cherish her with flowers, or surprise her with a Sunday brunch. And for those mothers who have left us, you will always be in our hearts. “Who’s the best? Your the best.” Love you, Mom.

A special remembrance, too, to those who have served in the Armed Forces and sacrificed their lives to give us the freedoms we enjoy today.

Enjoy your month... and see you next issue.

BAREFOOT ON THE BOARDWALK

HOW JASON ALDEAN AND COUNTRY’S ELITE ARE TAKING OVER THE JERSEY SHORE IN 2025

There’s something unmistakably special about a summer evening on the Jersey Shore: the scent of saltwater taffy, the hum of the boardwalk beneath your feet, and now—thanks to the Barefoot Country Music Festival (BCMF) — the thunderous twang of guitars and the roar of tens of thousands of country fans singing along in unison. From June 19th to 22nd, 2025, the beach town of Wildwood, New Jersey, will be transformed into a country music mecca for the fifth edition of the Barefoot Country Music Festival. And this year, it’s not just any headliner bringing the heat to the Shore— Jason Aldean, the genre’s long-reigning rock-country rebel, is anchoring the lineup in what promises to be a defining performance of the summer.

FROM NASHVILLE TO THE NORTH ATLANTIC

When you think of country music’s typical hotspots, locales like Nashville, Dallas, or even Atlanta come to mind. You don’t think of New York, the Hamptons or the Jersey Shore. But for one long weekend every summer, a remarkable shift happens: country fans from all over the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and beyond descend on Wildwood. BCMF turns the Shore into rhinestone rocker and fan heaven. They come for the music, the beachside vibe, and an unforgettable experience.

Started in 2021, the Barefoot Country Music Festival has grown from a daring idea into one of the largest outdoor country music events on the East Coast.

Held on the beach adjacent to the historic Wildwood Boardwalk, the event uniquely blends seaside charm with stadium-level spectacle.

With more than 40 artists spread across multiple stages, it’s a celebration of everything country stands for: stories, soul, and shared experience.

This year, that experience reaches new heights with the arrival of country’s most notorious and beloved rebel; Jason Aldean. His no-holds-barred approach to live performance and genre-defying catalog make him an ideal centerpiece for what has quickly become the most anticipated country fest of the summer season.

JASON ALDEAN: FULL THROTTLE TO THE SHORE

For Jason Aldean, 2025 marks a return to the road in massive fashion. The “Full Throttle Tour”, which kicked off in late spring, is one of the most anticipated tours in country music this year. And his BCMF performance, set for Saturday night under the stars, is expected to be the emotional and musical climax of the weekend.

Aldean’s journey is well-known: a Georgia-born singer who fought for years to find his place in Nashville, only to redefine modern country once he arrived. With chart-topping hits like “Dirt Road Anthem,” “My Kinda Party,” “She’s Country,” and the contemplative “You Make It Easy,” Aldean has spent nearly two decades walking the line between country grit and arena rock polish. That duality is what makes him not only relevant—but irreplaceable. In recent years, hits like “Try That In A Small Town,” “Let Your Boys be Country,” and “Highway Desperado” have all cemented Aldean’s reign at the top of the Opry.

BCMF producers reportedly designed much of the 2025 festival’s structure around Aldean’s headline slot, aiming to give him a massive stage to deliver a career-spanning setlist that fans will be talking about long after summer ends.

And Aldean’s take on it? “There’s something about the Jersey crowd—they bring energy that’s just wild,” he told reporters during a recent stop on his tour. “Playing on a beach with 40,000 people, waves crashing nearby, everyone barefoot and singing along? That’s what country music should feel like— real, rowdy, and full of life.”

THE LINEUP: A SYMPHONY OF COUNTRY VOICES

Of course, Jason Aldean is just the tip of the musical iceberg at BCMF 2025. This year’s lineup reads like a curated Spotify playlist of today’s most buzzed-about acts.

Joining Aldean on the headliner slate is Lainey Wilson, the bell-bottomed outlaw who’s taking home awards as fast as she’s collecting fans. Her blend of classic country, swampy soul, and modern empowerment anthems is expected to be a standout.

To close-out the headline section, Jelly Roll, the Nashville rapper-turned-balladeer whose emotional storytelling has taken over airwaves and arenas, returns to BCMF for his second appearance—this time with a bigger stage and even more fans. Jelly Roll recently made headlines for his critically acclaimed performances as well as an incredible weight loss journey.

ENDLESS TALENT

Rascal Flatts, fresh off a reunion announcement, are bringing decades of feelgood, harmony-laden hits to Sunday night.

Jordan Davis: Davis’s smooth vocals and catchy tunes have quickly propelled him to stardom.

Megan Moroney: A rising star, Moroney’s authentic songwriting resonates with fans seeking genuine narratives.

Chris Janson: Known for his high-energy performances, Janson’s charisma is infectious.

Warren Zeiders: With a voice that exudes raw emotion, Zeiders is a name to watch.

Boyz II Men: Adding a touch of R&B flair, the inclusion of the legendary crooners showcases BCMF’s commitment to musical diversity.

Other featured artists include Colt Ford, and newcomers who are expected to break out by summer’s end.

From legends to fresh faces, the talent pool is deep—and incredibly diverse. Festival organizers say that’s by design, “We want to showcase the full spectrum of country music,” said BCMF Executive Producer Rob Pederson. “Jason [Aldean] might be the anchor, but we’re building an experience that spans generations, tastes, and regions. If you love country in any form, BCMF 2025 is for you.”

THE VIP EXPERIENCE: COUNTRY IN STYLE

While general admission tickets grant access to the full slate of performances, BCMF has become increasingly known for its luxurious VIP offerings. For New York-based country fans who want comfort and convenience, the SVIP (Super VIP) package is worth the investment.

SVIP passholders enjoy frontrow access, exclusive lounges with elevated food and beverage options, luxury restrooms, artist meet-and-greets, and more. There’s even a raised platform with ocean views—perfect for Instagram-able sunset shots while your favorite act plays on stage.

Aldean’s team is rumored to have collaborated on some unique SVIP activations for his Saturday set, including custom cocktails and an on-site merch launch.

GRAND OLE OPRY

Anyone who knows or loves country music knows the granddaddy of all venues, The Grand Ole Opry. This year, the Opry and BCMF are teaming up for a once-in-alifetime celebration of country’s yesterday, today and tomorrow! From Opry icons to today’s rising stars, BCMF has packed this weekend with performances that are the stuff legend is truly made of.

OPRY NEXTSTAGE AT BCMF

Every year, BCMF brings the best and brightest of country’s charts, as well as the stars of tomorrow. But this year, Opry’s NextStage program is turning up the volume with Kaitlin Butts, Bayker Blankenship, and Tigirlily Gold!

As BCMF and Opry have stated, “These future superstars will be taking the stage throughout the weekend, alongside NextStage alumni like Lainey Wilson, Warren Zeiders, and Megan Moroney. That’s some serious talent, y’all.”

A PIECE OF HISTORY MAKES ITS BCMF DEBUT

If you have ever visited the The Grand Ole Opry, you would have seen the legendary mic stand. And for those country fans who haven’t seen it, now’s your chance! As BCMF has told New York Lifestyles Magazine, “The Grand Ole Opry’s legendary mic stand is leaving Music City and heading to the BCMF stage! That means some of your favorite artists will be singing straight into country music history—but with a whole lot more sand between their toes.”

NEW YORK MEETS NASHVILLE

And no, we are not talking about a former hit TV show. For New Yorkers — especially those craving a summer escape without booking a flight out of the tri-state — BCMF is just a few hours away. Hop on the Garden State Parkway, take the ferry from Long Island, or organize a group bus rental and you’re there.

But it’s not just about convenience. There’s a cultural synergy happening here. New York City has always been a hub of musical evolution. And in recent years, country music has exploded in popularity across the five boroughs and all demographics. Whether it’s honky-tonk nights in Brooklyn bars, country line dancing in Queens, or Jason Aldean blaring from rooftop parties on the Upper West Side, New Yorkers are embracing country in all its forms.

BCMF offers a chance for those fans to connect not just with the music, but with a broader community of like-minded revelers. Here, boots meet Birkenstocks, cowboy hats mix with Yankees caps, and music erases the lines between urban and rural.

BCMF’S LEGACY: LOOKING AHEAD

With its fifth anniversary, BCMF isn’t just another summer event—it’s cementing its legacy as a cornerstone of East Coast music culture. It is has quickly become country’s northeast home.

Each year, the festival grows larger and larger with bigger productions, stronger partnerships and increasingly popular talent! And if Jason Aldean’s involvement is any indicator, it’s clear that the biggest names in the business see BCMF as a must-play destination.

What started as a novel idea has evolved into a lifestyle movement — one that blends freedom, music, and the kind of joy that can only be found under open skies with bare feet in the sand.

PACK YOUR BOOTS, GRAB YOUR SHADES

So, here’s your call to action, New Yorkers: skip the Hamptons for a weekend. Forget the Hudson Valley for this week in June. Instead, head south and immerse yourself in a weekend where Southern hospitality meets Atlantic coast cool.

The Barefoot Country Music Festival 2025 isn’t just a concert. It’s a statement. And it’s one you won’t want to miss.

SUMMER WEEKEND PLANNING

ULTIMATE FOOD AND SOUND MAKE A GREAT SUMMER

Ahh summer is almost here! The smell of fresh cut grass as we lay in Sheep’s Meadow in Central Park, the flowers blooming across the sidewalk boxes adorning buildings and trees, the hustle and bustle of city bars and clubs Tuesday through Thursday nights and summer weekends away are almost upon us. Then again, so are the Friday sounds of bumper-to-bumper traffic for weekend excursions to the Hamptons, Jersey Shore and Hudson Valley.

It often seems that no matter what you do or how well you plan, the traffic out of New York never goes away during the summer. Congestion pricing be damned. And, yes, the reverse is also true on Sunday afternoon when everyone runs back to the city. Though in recent years, with Work From Home being more prevalent, that pattern has eased considerably as people are now coming back at different times. So, while the travel situation may be somewhat dicey, and often random, that does not mean that planning for the rest of your summer needs to be.

However, there are some challenges when it comes to weekending in the area. As an example, when I was growing up, I remember my parents had two sets of virtually everything needed: one for our apartment in the city and one for our country house. That can get expensive, fast. Now if you have a weekend share in the area, obviously you can be a little more mobile in your choices of what to have and where. However, there is one staple that no one can escape planning for: food.

FOOD PLANNING FOR SUMMER WEEKENDS

Now I know the ‘90s supermodel diet of a piece of gum, endless cigarettes and Diet Coke died a few years back, so this is even more important now. And considering how many of our readers have children, and parties at their weekend homes, I thought I’d pass along a trick that has worked for me for over 20 years.

Basically, you arrange to have two different food deliveries across your week. One of the reasons this has worked out so well for my family is because we use the same grocery delivery service we are accustomed to for both week and weekend deliveries, FreshDirect. Yes, FreshDirect delivers to the Hamptons and Jersey Shore. That way I am familiar with the products they sell and the produce they carry (also not having to worry about local produce stands and the concern that they may not have enough product). I also know that I am still supporting local farms and farmers since FreshDirect buys directly from local farms and cooperatives on Long Island, in Upstate New York and in New Jersey. Ordering twice a week also cuts down on food waste and can save some dollars as you won’t have to worry about produce or prepared foods spoiling.

The first delivery should be on Monday night, in case you decide to hump it out under the sun for an extra six or eight hours. That delivery should be about 70% of your normal volume of vegetables and protein, as well as snacks, for Monday through Thursday. And don’t forget to order healthy snacks for the kiddos for the car ride to whatever fab destination you are heading to!

Since most people leave late Thursday night or early Friday morning for regional weekend destinations, schedule your delivery for Friday morning using FreshDirect’s delivery service to the Hamptons and Jersey Shore. That should be roughly 30% of your normal weekly grocery bill, plus whatever supplies you need for the weekend’s activities like a BBQ or party. Yes, FreshDirect sells charcoal, lighter fluid, bamboo sticks and more if you want to get your grill on! And when it comes to entertaining and catering, they have incredible cheese boards, charcuterie, appetizers, nibbles, snack packs and even easy to heat and serve entrees!

Now, if you are summering in the Hudson Valley, that is a little different. Your second delivery should be to your apartment Thursday night or very first thing Friday morning depending on when you plan to leave for parts north. And remember that a large cooler (like an Igloo) can be your best friend when traveling between homes. Though I have found that FreshDirect’s bags are great for transporting!

To save time, you might want to consider a few of FreshDirect’s meal kits or prepared dishes. They are made with local, fresh ingredients and are YUMMO! The meal kits can also make actual cooking easy and offer a variety of flavors and options you may not normally be comfortable making on your own. Those aside, I love their rotisserie chicken for a variety of reasons, but most importantly because it’s fresh, juicy and the leftover chicken can be used to also make other dishes on other nights, or sandwiches for picnic lunches the next day or two. It can also save you calories that can be reserved for that margarita or glass of rose!

Now, just to be clear, I have been a FreshDirect customer since their second week in business so, yes, I am a little biased. But I also tell it like it is. That is why friends call me for advice. As an example, last summer, a friend of mine called me because she was having a cocktail party and BBQ the next day. It was a new home for her and didn’t have the supplies she needed. She wasn’t even sure what to get since she normally doesn’t do that kind of thing and didn’t want to be embarrassed asking her boyfriend, who was actually barbecuing for guests. Knowing they deliver to Southampton, I sent her to FreshDirect’s website right away. She ordered racks of ribs, pre-formed burgers, hot dogs and buns as well as chips, salsa, vodka, mixers, beer and soda (FreshDirect delivers alcohol to customers, but you need to show a valid ID to prove you are over 21). All of it delivered the next day and she was floored. She now orders from FreshDirect multiple times a week.

Another perk to using FreshDirect is that they have a ton of recipes on their blog if you are looking to step up your game. As an example, in my Great Bites column in this issue, you will find a recipe for an incredible frozen chili mango margarita that would make you a legend at your next BBQ or party!

Now, don’t kid yourself, you won’t be able to plan everything out. We are human after all. So don’t get upset if you forget the limes, or sea salt. There is always a corner store nearby, though nearby may be 10 miles away or more!

PLAY THAT FUNKY MUSIC

Now that we have the food sorted, let’s talk sound. After all, during the summer, you want to make sure you’ve got delicious taste and sound!

Whether by the pool, at the beach or having a rager on the patio, you want to make sure that your sound is up to snuff to ensure optimal entertainment! Whether it’s just for you, or including your family, friends and neighbors, having a great sound system is vital!

My friends at iLive sent me this incredible Bluetooth Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer and Satellite Speakers. It’s perfect for your TV setup at the weekend house or share as it’s versatile and won’t set you back too much. It doesn’t matter which connection you use (Bluetooth, aux-in, HDMI, etc.), the various sound modes deliver impressive sound, and you don’t need to worry about that bass - it’s there! Whether connecting to your flatscreen, iPad or iPhone, it delivers a perfect array of acoustics that runs the gamut of personal enjoyment on your couch while binging the latest hot series or making everyone scream and shout along to a popular song while enjoying that mojito!

If you are heading to the beach, or just jamming out in the backyard and don’t want to spring for an entire sound system, you can still get incredible high-fidelity sound without breaking the bank too. The Bose SoundLink Max is their most powerful portable and delivers the same level of incredible sound as the legendary speaker brand’s home collection does. If you are down for a backyard blowout with more than 20 people, or powerful pool party, you should consider the Bose S1 Pro+ Allin-One Powered Portable Bluetooth Speaker Wireless PA System as it also has slots for microphones, instruments and the like. It delivers sound as if you had a full backyard setup!

This brings up the next issue, if you are going to be the DJ, or just manage the playlist, there are a couple of things to consider. No matter your choice of music, always make sure that you are using optimal sound equipment for everyone’s enjoyment! If everything is playing through Bluetooth, then you can use your mobile, be it iPhone or otherwise. But my suggestion is to grab the latest iPad Air that just came out in March. Killer hardware (new M3 chip!) that can make managing playlists, or even being your alter-ego DJ, so much easier. Or, if you want a less expensive model, Apple also just released a new version of the iPad that has a ton of power under the hood as well. One thing to consider is that the iPad Air does come with Apple Intelligence on-board which is incredible unto itself and may help you personally and professionally in your daily tasks. With either model, your friends can also chip in their songs through Apple Music if they want by sharing specific tracks, albums or their own curated playlists. The same applies if you are using Apple iPhone 16 and older models.

Have a delicious and sound-ful summer!

THE LOOK

SUMMER HAIR TRENDS

Like clothing and accessories, hairstyles also follow seasonal trends and much like fashion, hair also recycles and takes inspiration from the past. And with summer’s arrival, it’s time to start thinking about changing up your look.

As you head to the beach for that summer splash, to a club in SoHo or to a friend’s for a backyard BBQ, remember that hair is the ultimate accessory. Inspired by a few different decades, this season you can expect to see a common thread in how we sport our hair – it will be all about ease and looking effortlessly stylish.

THE BOB

If you caught last month’s issue, our cover star Carrie Preston was a foreshadow of this month’s style report. Her look was an easter egg similar to those from the White Lotus, revealing what is going to be one of the hottest looks for the summer.

With Mike White’s five-star drama we were shocked, amused and perhaps even upset at the characters but the true breakout star of the season came via the bob hairstyle’s starring role as seen on Leslie Bibb and Carrie Coon. Let’s be honest – those monologues wouldn’t have been quite as iconic if they were sporting any other style. They both proved that this classic cut whose origins can be traced to the early 1900’s has made a return and is much more versatile than we thought. A full century and a quarter later, it’s very much relevant and proving to be one of the most popular styles of the year. Whether A-line, clean cut, layered or messy, it’s a very easy and practical style to sport. A little Kérastase gold hair oil and some Oribe texturizing spray or curl cream and you’re set. It’s a style that flatters all hair colors and textures and is perfect for an on-the-go lifestyle.

NINETIES VOLUME IS BACK

Going short however isn’t an option for all and that’s understandable, hair is a journey. For those who are fans of longer locks, we have two words for you, ‘nineties’ volume.’ Blowouts have always been popular but nonquiet like that of Cindy Crawford. Who can forget her iconic mane both on and off the runway, which catapulted her to become the style icon of a generation. Whether straight or wavy, adding volume completely transforms your hair, and the once daunting task of blowing out your own hair at home has now become much easier thanks to a variety of heat tools now widely available such as Dyson’s Supersonic hair dryer or the countless hair air brushes you can find at any beauty retailer. You can now be your own stylist and create volume in a matter of minutes versus sitting in a salon chair for hours. I guess that means reruns of MTV House of Style and Beverly Hills 90210 are on order for those rainy Sunday afternoons!

BOHO CHIC

Now if a bohemian aesthetic is more your style, we’re happy to report that the boho-chic renaissance we’re seeing in fashion also is shaping hair this summer. Relaxed, tousled, messy waves are very much in and if you want to get creative and have fun, you can add a few different-sized braids to fit your attire or occasion. What makes Boho-chic hair popular this summer is that it’s easy and low maintenance to style. The key to pulling this look off is keeping your hair hydrated and healthy, which can also apply to all other hairstyles. Hair masks will be your best ally especially during the warmer months when hair can easily dry out.

GUYS MAKING WAVES

For guys, if you have length, this summer will be about embracing the curls as waved textures are very much in. This is the summer to let it grow. If medium, longer hair is an option for you, embrace your SoCal seaside dreams as surfer hair is very much on the forecast.

If longer hair is not an option for you, resist the urge to cut, at least on the top. Neo-quiffs a la Pedro Pascal and undone pompadours as seen on David Beckham are a great stylish option for the summer that allow you to stay light and cool thanks to their shorter sides and longer tops. However, contrary to the way we were introduced to these styles in the ‘50s, both are now meant to be messier and more relaxed. We’re not looking for a classic Elvis Presley hair silhouette – instead we’re channeling Elvis’ hairstyle on a lazy Sunday or a day at the beach. Ditch the extra-hold hair gel for a lighter and moldable hair cream or pomade. You want your hair to lightly hold while retaining some movement – this combination will be your recipe to pulling off an effortlessly cool look.

Whether you’re staying in the city or setting out to experience your own White Lotus journey this summer, don’t skip on channeling your inner Vidal Sassoon along the way. Summer is the time to have fun and take risks in leveling up your style, beginning with your hair.

SPOIL MOMS AND GRADS: GRACIOUS GIFTS AND A BIT OF QUIRKINESS

The month of May might very well be my favorite month with all its perky flowers and gentle breezes. It’s also when we set aside time to celebrate mothers and all the people in our lives who selflessly dole out mom-like mentoring throughout the year. At the same time, May is also abuzz with college graduations and young adults striking out on their own. So, to my earlier point: what’s not to love? All of these meaningful milestones inspire plenty of gift-giving, and I think we can do better than a soulless gift card, as practical as it may be. So, I’ve gathered some of my favorites—an eclectic mix of thoughtful baubles, keepsakes, and stellar gifts with a wink of quirkiness.

FLORAL WITH FLAIRE

The Bouqs Co catalog of arrangements is among the most creative I’ve seen in recent years. Of course, you can order a traditional and oh-so lovely bouquet of sunflowers, but the brand’s superpower lies in its mastery of the eclectic. The spring collection offers cheery tulips for Mom but also showstoppers like purple anemones, succulent stems, and delphinium. The website also offers astrology-based arrangement suggestions as well as sameday and next-day delivery options and subscriptions. Info: bouqs.com

RECYCLED SAIL CLOTH TOTE

This hard-working tote—one of Sea Bags best designs—is created from recycled sail cloth, sourced from the bustling waterfront in Portland, Maine. It’s a great gift for a beach-loving mom or any New Englander, at heart. Present the bag on its own or use it to create a themed gift by adding beach-day essentials or tablescape accessories and a gift card for an epic Boston lobster roll kit. Info: seabags.com

A ZERO-PROOF SIP OF ROSE

If the special mom in your life prefers her floral notes in a glass, Figlia’s zero-proof Aperitivo makes a fabulous gift. With hints of rose, bitter orange, and clove, it’s really lovely as is, but garnish is a strip of orange peel for pizzazz. There’s no added sugar or preservatives, which sets it apart from many of the non-alcoholic beverages on the shelves these days. Make it an extra special Mother’s Day gift by pairing it with a set of vintage cocktail glasses. Info: drinkfiglia.com

LOBSTER LOVE

Keeping with the lobster theme, I wanted to share this suggestion for one of the ultimate lobster rolls in the Northeast—Pauli’s North End in Boston. Sure, there’s mixed feeling about the Red Sox, but Boston’s famous Italian enclave, The North End, is a heavenly gastro-haven. Pauli’s is known for its overstuffed sandwiches and has been featured on Good Morning America and Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The lobster rolls are behemoths and are luckily available from Goldbelly.

GOLD FOR THE GRAD

May is also a special time of year because it’s when most college students walk for graduation. I love this simple, elegant Juliette Bracelet from Arleo Collection as a graduation gift for a loved one. It makes a big statement for under $300 with its unique custom lattice design and dazzling18 karat gold. The pull chain closure is finished with moissanite stones, and it feels like an heirloom in the making, so go the extra mile and buy a single sheet of exquisite gift wrap from a stationary store.

MOM’S NEW GO-TO

The Moby brand created a product that makes everyone wonder why it took so long. People have been hoisting babies onto their hips since the beginning of time, and now there’s finally a Hip Seat to help offset the weight and help keep baby comfy. It’s basically a fanny pack with a built-in baby seat—and it’s brilliant, really. Stash your little one’s essentials, a wallet, and more. It offers four positions for feeding, face-to-face, side carry, and front facing, plus it adjusts as the baby gets bigger. This easy-to-wash invention is a game-changer. Info: mobywrap.com

A PEARLED CANDLE?

For the mom or grandmother that loves candles but has too many candles, it’s time for a Foton candle. Pour the pearled candle beads into any container, add the wick, and light—such a simple yet revolutionary idea. In theory, you can re-use a typical candle container, but it’s a major headache to clean and usually get thrown out. Foton eliminates that waste and allows for oodles of creativity, especially knowing the beads float. Explore the website for ideas and gather some DIY supplies like succulents or seashells to inspire mom’s creative side. Info: fotoncandle.com

FOR THE WITTY MOMS

Perhaps the most excellent of all the gifts within this gift guide, Brass Monkey’s Salty Birds Sticker Book really elicits joy—sarcastic, unbridled joy. The under-$10 set includes beautifully illustrated bird stickers, each with a snarky little comment—perfect for adorning notebooks, to-do lists, or anyplace that needs a little pop of sarcasm. While you’re on the website, grab the A Trillion Things Every Mom Will Do Prompted Journal. Its bright and cheery cover screams spring, and the prompts on the inside are both heartwarming and humorous. Info: brassmonkeygoods.com

BOOKISH DELIGHT

Give the moms in your life what they crave most—a bit of quiet time. Stop into a local indie bookstore to score a great read. Then, in a basket or tote bag, create a gift of bookish delights. Consider adding an additional bookstore gift card, wine, cozy lap blanket, a clip-on reading light, flowers, and one of these sweet Leather Stitched Heart Bookmarks from Alexis Drake— available in black, ruby, lavender, and platinum. For an extra special gift tote, opt for the brand’s buttery soft Market Tote. Info: alexisdrake.com

FROM DORM TO APARTMENT

I think we can all agree that dorm rooms have certainly come a long way, but there’s still a special magic when you move into your first postcollege apartment. All-Clad’s HA1 Expert Nonstick Cookware 7-Piece Set is the Goldilocks of starter sets— not too big, and not too small. The slightly oversized pieces mean that you can forgo with larger sets that take up a lot of cabinet space. The scratchresistant, hard anodized nonstick set is oven ready, up to 500-degrees, which further increases its versatility. Info: www.all-clad.com

SPRING’S LOVE NOTES--BOTTLED

If you’re looking for the perfect wine to buy by the case for a Mother’s Day or graduation brunch, consider Varvaglione’s Bianco Puglia IGP Bio 12 e mezzo. Its price is low. Its standards are exceedingly high. This aromatic organic wine channels its Apulian territory through light herbaceous notes, bright citrus, and well-balanced acidity. Add long minimalist bins to the table and allow the bottles—and their gorgeous labels—to be incorporated into the table setting. Add a few bottles of high-end champagne, and voilà!

TEA—BUT

MAKE IT BOOZY

I love these Sayso cocktail starters for picnics or any scenario where you want to simplify the craft cocktail supplies. Ingenious, really. The Sayso concept packs all the craft cocktail goodness into one itty bitty teabag. So, all you need to do is add liquid and your spirit of choice. Looking to stay zero-proof? Just skip the booze and add more water or seltzer. Varieties like Skinny Hibiscus Cosmopolitan, Skinny Spicy Margarita, and Skinny Cardamom Paloma keep the sugar close to zilch and Espresso Martini delivers all the java vibes with just 5 grams. SPRING KNIT, PERFECTED

If you’ve been reading this column for some time, you know that I value versatility, and this spring knit delivers, big time. First of all, it’s a gorgeous cotton-cashmere blend. But it’s the easy, breezy mesh design that keeps this sweater in the rotation for multiple seasons. Mom can wear it untucked with leggings or half-tucked with jeans or a skirt, and it’s got coastal chic down to a science. In fact, this Velvet brand Kanan Cotton Cashmere Mesh Sweater and the lobster claw Sea Bag mentioned earlier would be a fantastic gift combination.

HERBAL, SOULFUL GIFTS

Golden milk—a healthy, antiinflammatory drink—just so happens to be one of the coziest, most scrumptious sips as well. Anima Mundi Apothecary’s website offers a scroll-like list of herbal goodness, medicinal petals, and elixirs, but the Golden Sun Milk blend was one of the first gifts I thought of for this month. The energizing adaptogenic chai, used in traditional Ayurvedic wellness, blends beneficial herbs and spices (including cinnamon and ginger), which is mixed with warm milk and a bit of honey. Look for a lovely mug on Etsy or a makers’ market and wrap it up with the Golden Sun Milk blend and the Coconut Cream dairy-free creamer. Recipe tips are available on the website as well.

KEEPSAKE SEASON

We’re celebrating moms and college grads, but the keepsake season includes weddings and Father’s Day, which is just around the corner. Artifact Rising offers a wonderful selection of customized photo albums, but it’s their Scrapbook Album that has me most excited. The kit includes prompts, adhesive, envelopes for keepsakes, and a promotional code for ten free Everyday Prints—a great opportunity to pre-print some meaningful images to include in the gift. It’s perfect as is, but if you want to dive deeper into the theme, include additional scrapbooking accessories.

CASTLES ON THE LOIRE

A FASCINATION WITH A BEAUTIFUL HISTORY REALIZED

Apicture book called The Châteaux of the Loire I love first lured me to the Loire Valley, in 1976; my grandniece’s fascination with castles inspired our recent addon trip, there, from Paris.

I booked tickets for the 68-minute high-speed Trains à Grande Vitesse (TGV) via Rail Europe from Gare Montparnasse to Saint Pierre-des-Corps, outside Tours, where we picked up a Citroën rental car. Our subsequent four-day castle-to-castle drive included visits to chateaux and strolls through the adjacent towns that date from the feudal era, where we sampled local cheese, sipped Vouvray and savored macarons. Each mid-afternoon, we checked into one of the three best hotels along the eastern region of the Val de Loire, where we relished spa treatments, dinners and overnight stays.

CHÂTEAU ROYAL D’AMBOISE

From the train, we headed towards Amboise and Château Royal d’Amboise, a medieval fortress which Charles VII transformed into a 15th century Renaissance palace. This bird-lovers paradise is launching its first overnight bivouac in summer 2025 that will include dinner and a nocturnal garden exploration. Just a fifteenminute walk from the palace, visitors reach the Château Clos du Lucé, where Leonardo da Vinci spent his last years and is buried in the little, gothic 15th century Saint-Hubert Chapel.

CHÂTEAU DE CHAMBORD

King Francis I commissioned the enchanting Château de Chambord in 1519, intending to display his power and use the largest enclosed park in Europe as a hunting lodge. The architecture blends the best of French Renaissance and Medieval styles and ultimately inspired Walt Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Its 13,500 acres are encircled by a 20-mile wall, equivalent to the size of Paris and showcase French formal gardens that were restored in 2017, to the specifications of a 1734 drawing. The palace interior, with its amazing intertwining double helix staircase is attributed to Leonardo da Vinci.

RELAIS DE CHAMBORD

Relais de Chambord sits on palace grounds near the castle within what used to be a farmhouse and stables, in the 19th century. The 55-room hotel is a Small Luxury Hotels of the World affiliate, which prestigious French architect, Michel Wilmotte, recently upgraded. Our light-filled corner room viewed the extraordinary castle; there were similar views from the unique barge called La Toue du Relais, a suite-boat moored in the Cosson River, and the barrel-shaped hot tub on the spa terrace! At Le Grand Saint Michel restaurant, we sipped Château de Chambord wine by the fire in the bar and ate Loire Valley comfort food in the country house-inspired dining room: an amuse, foie gras plus pasta with truffles.

CHÂTEAU ROYAL DE BLOIS

The history of the Royal Chateau of Blois dates from King Louis XII who arranged to have the oldest part of the chateau constructed before he died in 1515 and his successor, King François I, who added the Renaissance wing with its unique open circular staircase. That addition accounts for the castle’s status as one of the most prestigious Renaissance monuments in France.

FLEUR DE LOIRE

On the other side of the river, Michelin two-star chef Christophe Hay lovingly transformed a former riverfront hospice which views the castle into Fleur de Loire, a 44-room and 12-suite hotel, which opened in mid-2022. The Relais & Chateaux affiliate is built within the original structure and features a contemporary décor in which the eco-dedicated Gault & Millau “Chef of the Year 2021” also houses his destination restaurant, Restaurant Christophe Hay, one of Les Grandes Tables du Monde and the Sisley Spa and swimming pool. Amour Blanc, his more casual venue, is located within his adjacent, newly built, stone and glass, riverfront building.

CHÂTEAU DE CHEVERNY

Château de Cheverny is privately owned and occupied by the same family for more than six centuries and houses treasures that include lovely antiques, such as a Louis XIV chest of drawers in the Boulle style and a 17th century Gobelin tapestry. Outside, there’s a maze, a vegetable garden, a tulip garden and kennel.

© LesSourcesDeCheverny

CHÂTEAU DE CHENONCEAU

Our final castle visit was to Château de Chenonceau, where we walked on the tree-bordered Grande Allée through the park and past trees planted in Versailles-like boxes. The interior is beautifully and authentically furnished in period décor and, because we happened to visit before a scheduled gala event, the table was set formally in the long gallery that Catherine de’ Medici added as a bridge across the Cher River.

CHÂTEAU D’ARTIGNY

I was on a mission to return to Château d’Artigny, where I had stayed with my late husband, in 1976, in the hotel that François Coty, the famed perfumer, had formerly built as his country estate. Though it was 25 miles beyond Chenonceau, I reserved a table for Sunday brunch before our late-day train trip via TGV that stopped directly at Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport. The station is located directly beneath the Sheraton Paris Airport Hotel, where we overnighted before flying back to the states, because the hotel’s front door opens into Terminal 2 and our gates!

A Caveat: Château d’Artigny plans to close at the end of 2025, for a total renovation and is scheduled to reopen in 2027. That’s reason enough to plan my next trip to the Loire!

A REMARKABLE PLACE GRAND JUNCTION

DISCOVER COLORADO’S WESTERN WONDERLAND

There’s a good reason they call Grand Junction “grand,” which you’ll discover the moment your plane begins to descend, and you get your first glimpse of the Grand Mesa that overlooks that Western Colorado city.

That massive flat-top mountain is the largest in the world, rising to 10,000 feet and encompassing over 500 square miles, with over three million acres protected as part of the Grand Mesa National Forest. That huge, forested mesa also boasts over 300 lakes. Looking down on it from the sky is breathtaking on a sunny day.

And sunny days are a part of Grand Junction’s many appealing qualities, as it averages 250 of those each year because of its high desert ecosystem, which is a distinct contrast to the mesa’s alpine climate, where plenty of snow falls in the winter months. It’s a fascinating contrast, with the alpine mesa to the east of the city and the desert-like Colorado Plateau to the west, and a microclimate in between where Colorado’s wine country is thriving.

And we haven’t even gotten to the grandness of that Colorado Plateau, which marks the beginning of that vast arid expanse that defines much of Utah and Arizona’s magical landscapes. Just an hour east of Moab and the famed national parks of Arches and Canyonlands are the Rattlesnake Arches and the Colorado National Monument, which are just outside of Grand Junction.

It’s the eastern edge of the Colorado Plateau, and a place filled with incredible rock formations, arches and incredible vistas. And the best part about it? No crowds! So while you’re hiking in through the serene gorgeousness of the Rattlesnake Arches, think of the hordes of tourists an hour away, waiting for hours in a literally endless line of cars just to get into Arches.

In the words of the latest hip travel trend, Grand Junction, the Colorado National Monument, Rattlesnake Arches and Grand Mesa are “dupes” for the overcrowded spots just off to the west – gorgeous places that allow you to truly feel like you’ve left the world behind. Plus, without the crowds, you just might see a pack of wild horses here, a lone bighorn sheep or even a luxuriously coated fox racing past.

These can be rugged places, where scampering over rocks, climbing up and down shale-covered hills and peeking into caves and arch formations take some fortitude. Campsites are dotted throughout both the monument and up on the mesa, but hotels are also plentiful in Grand Junction and lovely secluded lodges are found across the Grand Mesa, so roughing it isn’t necessary if it isn’t your idea of fun.

Choose an expert tour guide like Greg Gnesios, an ex-National Park Service ranger-manager, who will drive you through the monument and fill your head with lots of interesting history about the region with plenty of stops along the way. Or perhaps join an Adrenaline Driven Adventure Tour and jump into an RZR for a bumpy ride to the trailhead of the Rattlesnake Arches, and then hike into the incredible landscape that unfolds before you, as the birds sing, the blue lizards sun themselves on rocks and the whole world seems like a beautiful place.

Up on Grand Mesa, find an outdoor paradise in every season, from spring and summer’s hiking, biking, fishing, rafting and wildlife encounters (think moose, deer, elk and more) to winter’s skiing, snowshoeing and ice fishing in a winter wonderland. Less adventurous? Then drive the spectacular, 63mile Grand Mesa Scenic Byway that wends you through four different eco-zones in one road trip.

Be sure to go outside when full darkness comes upon Grand Junction, and get away from the city lights, where you’ll discover that the dark skies in this region are bursting with stars, planets and other observable phenomenon out in the solar system. If you’re really serious about astronomy and astrophotography faraway, the Grand Mesa Observatory has professional remote imaging equipment available for rent, as well as powerful telescopes.

WINE, DINE, BREWS AND BOOZE, PLUS ENSTROM’S

All this natural scenery and adventuring naturally works up an appetite, and Grand Junction is well up to the task of satisfying your culinary needs. The lively and sophisticated foodie scene here ranges from cozy breakfast spots to a perennially James Beard-nominated restaurant, while the drinking scene is first-rate, with over 30 wineries, eight breweries and three distilleries ready to serve up the libations you love.

Try out Main Street Bagels for a hearty breakfast in a place very popular with locals, or hit Roots Gastrohub to fuel up for the day, or stop in there for lunch after a morning of outdoor adventures.

Bin 707 Foodbar, helmed by Josh Niernberg, is the James Beard honoree, an easygoing dinner place on Main Street that serves up seasonal dishes (many which are locally sourced) that are both beautiful and delicious. Taste the Elk Tartare if it is on the menu, and don’t miss having one of their elevated pizzas, that give a whole new meaning to baked dough topped with wonderful things. And be certain to have a piece of sweet pie for dessert there, too.

Helping to serve this college town’s need for beer is Trail Life Brewing, which combines house-brewed beers with an eclectic choice of foods, from burgers to curries to Bahn-mi sandwiches, while the quirky and fun scene at Highlands Distillery includes their gin, vodka, rum and whiskey house-created spirits, served up by outdoor fireplaces, inside a yurt and in a more traditional bar setting. Try their Whipped Painkiller and the Blarney Stone cocktails, and make sure to have a designated driver.

And then there’s Enstrom Candies, that little slice of heaven on earth, where the family-owned factory and store have been creating toffee perfection since 1960. If you’ve never tasted their famous Almond Toffee (we’re partial to the dark chocolate version), you’ve got to stop by for a sample. But be warned, you’re probably going to be carrying at least a pound of that incomparable sweet treat home in your carry on.

Do remember to look out the plane’s window again as you go, for the views are even more spectacular once you’ve been immersed in this Western Colorado wonderland and understand just how great it truly is.

MILL HOUSE INN

CHARMS GUESTS WITH FIVE-STAR TLC

An hour after scheduling my dreaded but necessary ankle replacement, my husband Paul and I booked a pre-surgery sojourn. The getaway choice was a no-brainer. For the past six years when in need of pampering, rejuvenation and a spiritual pick-me-up, we return like homing pigeons to this cozy 10-room, year-round Bed and Breakfast in the heart of East Hampton Village.

Located across from the 1806 Hook Windmill, the Inn has never failed to provide us with a luxe sojourn replete with an endless supply of home-made chocolate chip cookies, hot apple cider and a drool-worthy breakfast featuring seven different coffee beans ground fresh daily. (Breakfast orders must be placed by 8 PM the prior evening.) The most important ingredient: the convivial staff’s passion for doing whatever it takes to make guests feels like family. Here’s looking at you, Dawn!

Originally constructed in 1790 as a Cape Cod “Salt Box’ style private dwelling, by 1860 a new owner had transformed the house into a community hub. Services were offered to local Catholics ranging from farmers to former first lady Julia Gardiner Tyler. With the 1895 arrival of the Long Island Rail Road, Mill House officially became one of the Hamptons’ first inns.

Subsequent renovations and expansions over the years - the sole original remnant are the beams in the ground floor ceiling - modernized the Mill House without diminishing its singular character. Each room in the three-story main house boasts an individual theme and includes a fireplace, frette sheets and feather mattress bed topped by a stuffed black dog. Want to bring Fido or Fifi? Book a dog-friendly suite with a private entrance. At check in your fur baby will receive homemade treats, poop bags, bowls and doggie bed.

An adjacent property is the Graybarn Cottage, transformed in 1969 from a potato barn to a four-bedroom, four-bathroom estate with multiple living areas, stocked gourmet kitchen, wine fridge, reading nook, hot tub, private 40’ heated saltwater Gunite swimming pool, gas barbecue and access to a personal assistant.

Some quirky Mill House lore: in 1999, when Gary and Sylvia Muller purchased the Inn, the fire department requested an address change – from 33 to 31 North Main Street. A few years later the couple purchased the building behind the Inn, necessitating another address change. The guest rooms, once tagged with names like ‘America’s Cup’ and ‘Hampton Classic’ are currently known by numbers. This has led to a seemingly ersatz arrangement sans Room One, Two or Three, with Room Four located on the second floor and Suite Eleven on the ground floor.

There might be some musical rooms during your stay: General manager Kenny’s motto is: “I upgrade everybody unless we’re sold out.” Proviso: Don’t expect this treat during high season.

YOUR WISH, THEIR COMMAND

Before your arrival, expect to be asked what you’d like to experience during your stay – beyond the standard accoutrements such as complimentary parking permits for nearby Egypt Beach, towels and chair, along with lining up your dinner reservations. Kenny, who laughingly explains, “Guests are food oriented,” typically recommends nearby, won’t-break-the-bank eateries like East Hampton Grill (home of scrumptious rosemary buttermilk biscuits) local favorite Rowdy Hall and Bostwick’s Chowder House’s lobster rolls. The most requested reservation is for the Tuscan-themed East Hampton institution Nick & Toni’s.

In the weeks leading up to our summer 2021 visit, Personal Assistant Dawn kept my inbox filled with potential East End activities such as a Full Flower Moon Hike sponsored by the South Fork Natural History Museum and Nature Center and a wine dinner at Wölffer estate.

This was the weekend when the Mill House gang won my heart forever by sending up chocolate covered strawberries after hearing this was my first outing since successfully completing treatment for breast cancer which had been diagnosed at the beginning of the COVID lockdowns.

While I’ve never requested (as has one beloved pop star) one red rose next to the nightstand at all times, as well as a specific lightbulb in the lamp, it’s comforting to know practically any wishes would be granted.

I’m easy to please. My best Mill House moments are reading and munching homemade cookies on the Inn’s spacious front porch, followed by a soak in our room’s deep, two-person tub staring at the stars through the skylight. Now, that’s healing!

For more information about Mill House Inn, go to millhouseinn.com or call 631-324-9766.

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF’S NOTE: It is important to note that Gary Muller passed away last year. I had personally met both Sylvia and Gary in the early 2000’s at an event I was hosting in the Hamptons. Both were the warmest, genuine and most approachable people I had met in a long time. On behalf of New York Lifestyles Magazine, please accept our sincerest condolences to such a kind and wonderful family, both Muller and Mill House Inn, on the passing of Gary.

THE GEORGE

A CHIC BOUTIQUE HOTEL IN MONTCLAIR, NJ

“Boutique…the type of hotel that is charming, intimate, and often smaller in size. Unlike traditional hotels, which can feel impersonal or standardized, boutique hotels aim to create a more authentic and personalized experience.” – Swiss Hotel Management School.

When the husband and wife team of Steven Plofker and makeup mogul Bobbi Brown decided to re-make the neglected Georgian Inn in their hometown of Montclair, NJ, they created the quintessential “boutique hotel.” The George, a stylish 31-room hotel in the heart of Montclair, reflects the creative flair that Bobbi brought to her cosmetic empire and the entrepreneurial genius of Steven’s eye for development.

A LANDMARK BUILDING

Approaching the front of The George, one can’t help but be impressed with the stately feel of this historic building. Originally built in 1902 as a private home for Charles Van Vleck, a Master architect for many Rockefeller properties and New York department store buildings, it later became The Georgian Inn, a residential hotel for short-term stays. Granted landmark status in 2008, the building was purchased in 2010. Then in 2012 began its metamorphosis into the upscale, chic retreat that the owners like to describe as “modern style with historic bones.”

Following a full-scale renovation, owing much of the stylistic design and unique touches to Bobbi’s imaginative eye, The George opened in 2018. Many original features were thankfully preserved – stained glass windows, exposed brick, grand fireplaces, and artistic woodwork are just some of the “historic bones.”

UNIQUE ROOMS

At check-in, it’s hard to miss one of the property’s unique central themes – a collection of framed photos and art pieces reflecting a particular room’s name. The walls of both the Lobbyoriginally the grand main hall of the estate - and the adjoining Library – with its comfy chairs and blazing fireplace –are adorned with all things “George.” There’s George Washington, of course, and George Harrison, George Foreman, Boy George, and even a “racy” picture of George Costanza.

None of The George’s rooms are numbered: they are named. We had the pleasure of staying in the Dylan suite with its pictures of Bob Dylan, his son Jacob, Matt Dillon, Dylan Thomas, Dylan McDermott, and others.

Each of the guest rooms is uniquely designed and configured, but all have the signature amenities of The George’s partners. Some of the guestroom amenities include dreamy Casper mattresses and bedding, Nespresso machines, Audio Pro Bluetooth speakers, and EO bath products.

Ctsy: Stephanie Sylva

AMENITIES GALORE

Guests will enjoy the complimentary European-style continental breakfast of fresh local pastries, fresh fruit, charcuterie, and juices. Kick start your evening with the complimentary wine service in the Library each day from 5:00 to 7:00. Relax in front of the fire with a glass of wine and your choice of book from the curated collection of coffee table books.

Got a sweet tooth? Satisfy it with a treat from the complimentary candy closet or ice cream freezer. A plate of fresh- baked cookies is offered in the afternoons. Work out in the nicely equipped gym (appropriately named Jim). Relax around the outdoor firepit when weather permits. Bring your pet along, as The George is dog friendly.

GREAT DINING CHOICES

The George does not serve lunch or dinner, but it does have an excellent relationship with a myriad of local restaurants. Montclair is a mecca for foodies with a superb collection of dining choices in a variety of cuisines and price ranges. Reception can provide a list of recommended restaurants.

Our choice? Definitely Faubourg, a modern French brasserie with a great vibe. Located in an inviting bi-level venue with a great indoor-outdoor setting, Faubourg Montclair offers French-inspired fare, a thoughtful wine list, and inspired craft cocktails. In no way is the venue presumptuous – rather the service is attentive, helpful, and friendly. The fare was nothing short of exquisite. Many of the items are casual and hearty, typical of a brasserie.

Opened in 2019, Faubourg’s Montclair location was named as one of “North Jersey’s Best New Restaurants” of the year by NorthJersey.com Suburban Essex Magazine has it on its “Best of Essex” list, and NJ Monthly annually lists it among “The Best Restaurants in New Jersey.

A DIVERSE TOWN

Located 12 miles from Manhattan, Montclair is a diverse, progressive suburb, often referred to as “New Jersey’s Brooklyn.”

A vibrant arts & culture scene, the result of the town’s history as an artist’s retreat from Manhattan, is thriving in Montclair. Browse the many boutique shops and art galleries, sit in on a set of live music at the Montclair Brewery, the Outpost in the Burbs, or one of the many cafes and coffee shops. Or check out a major act on the schedule at the Wellmont Theater. The city has numerous special events, including its nationally recognized Montclair Film Festival, the Montclair Jazz Festival, Food and Wine Festival, and Literary Festival.

Other attractions include the Van Vleck Gardens and the Montclair Art Museum. Brookdale Park was designed by Olmstead Firm, the same architects who created Central Park and Brooklyn’s own Prospect Park. Montclair has enough of the right vibe that celebrities such Stephen Colbert and actor Patrick Wilson, in addition to the aforementioned Bobbi Brown, have made it their home. With six NJ Transit train stops in town, getting here from NYC is a snap.

AQUALANE SHORES REFINED

REIMAGINING WATERFRONT ELEGANCE IN NAPLES

In a city synonymous with world-class coastal living, few neighborhoods match the prestige and privacy of Aqualane Shores. Nestled between Old Naples and Port Royal, this exclusive waterfront enclave offers the best of all worlds: deep-water access, architectural elegance, and a heartbeat’s proximity to downtown. At 2020 7th Street South, a new standard of luxury has arrived—a $20.995 million estate that’s as serene as it is stunning.

Designed by Stofft Cooney Architects and brought to life by Toscana Homes, this 2023 masterpiece is the epitome of modern Florida living. Sophisticated yet livable, expansive yet intimate, the residence spans 6,603 square feet of interior space, with five bedrooms, five full bathrooms, and two halfbaths—all masterfully orchestrated on a generous .37-acre corner lot along 225 feet of canal frontage.

DESIGN THAT BREATHES

From the moment you step through the grand entrance, the home exudes a sense of calm and coastal confidence. Carrie Brigham’s interior design infuses each space with understated glamour— white oak floors, tailored millwork, and soft, sunwashed textures reflect the light that pours through floor-to-ceiling windows.

The architecture’s clean lines are softened by the natural palette, while thoughtful spatial flow makes entertaining feel effortless. Whether you’re hosting a cocktail evening or enjoying a quiet moment by the pool, the home adapts with grace.

WATERFRONT LIVING IN EVERY DETAIL

What sets this home apart, even in a market full of luxury, is how intimately it engages with the water. Southwest-facing rear exposure ensures breathtaking golden-hour views, while multiple pocketing glass doors erase the boundary between indoors and out.

Outside, a resort-style pool and spa anchor the living experience. The firepit lounge, outdoor dining pavilion, and fully equipped summer kitchen create the kind of alfresco experience that Naples homeowners covet year-round. And with a private dock offering direct, bridge-free access to the Gulf, boaters will find their paradise here.

THE HEART OF THE HOME

Inside, the kitchen is both a showpiece and a workhorse. Highend appliances—including Wolfe gas cooking, double ovens, and a Sub-Zero refrigerator—complement custom cabinetry and a massive center island. The open-concept floorplan flows easily into the living and dining areas, where a fireplace and built-in bar offer perfect places to gather.

A club room adds versatility—use it as a home office, media center, or fitness retreat—all while gazing out over wide water views.

A SANCTUARY OF REST

The primary suite is nothing short of a spa-like retreat. With large windows facing the canal, a luxurious soaking tub, dual vanities, and a multi-head rain shower, it offers a daily escape without ever leaving home. The suite also includes two spacious walk-in closets and a private seating area, ideal for unwinding in solitude.

Each of the four guest bedrooms is en-suite, designed with the same level of detail and comfort as the owner’s quarters. Whether hosting family or entertaining guests, the home delivers hotel-level hospitality in a private residential setting.

AQUALANE SHORES: TIMELESS, TUCKED-AWAY LUXURY

With its meandering canals and direct access to Naples Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, Aqualane Shores remains one of the city’s most sought-after communities. It offers a rare combination: tranquil waterfront living with walkability to Naples’ vibrant Third Street South, home to boutiques, fine dining, galleries, and farmers markets.

For those seeking discretion, architectural excellence, and seamless water access, this neighborhood delivers—and 2020 7th Street South embodies it all.

A HOME THAT DEFINES NAPLES LIVING

In a market where luxury is often expected, this property manages to surprise. It’s not just new—it’s visionary. It’s not just large—it’s livable. And it’s not just waterfront—it’s a front-row seat to the best of the Naples lifestyle.

With design pedigree, rare water frontage, and exceptional craftsmanship, 2020 7th Street South is more than a listing—it’s an invitation to live beautifully.

The estate’s Balinese inspiration is immediately evident, from the organic textures to the seamless integration of interior and exterior living spaces. Originally built in 1972 and extensively re-envisioned in 2015, the residence now spans nearly 30,000 square feet of living space, with every detail curated for beauty, comfort, and escapism.

OCEANFRONT LIVING REIMAGINED

This is not just about beachfront views—this is about owning the view. The estate commands over 300 feet of private ocean frontage, matched by a similar stretch along the Intracoastal, offering dual access to deep blue waters and calm yacht-ready canals. The lush grounds unfold like a botanical garden, guiding residents through palmlined paths, reflection pools, and shaded pavilions, each more serene than the last.

Inside, the main residence includes nine bedrooms and a stunning 16 bathrooms. Seven of the bedrooms boast unobstructed ocean views; the remaining two are tucked into Zen-like garden enclaves. Vaulted ceilings rise up to 30 feet high, with bespoke furnishings and architectural flourishes that draw upon Eastern design principles— flow, balance, and an uninterrupted connection to nature.

DESIGNED FOR INDULGENCE

Every inch of 1370 S Ocean Boulevard feels like an invitation to unwind. A private screening room, billiards lounge, and wine cellar cater to refined downtime, while a spa wing—with massage suite, full gym, and even a hair salon—rivals any five-star retreat. The kitchen and dining spaces are appointed for both function and beauty, ideal for everything from chef-catered dinners to casual al fresco breakfasts.

Step outside and the resort experience continues. A saltwater pool anchors the rear terrace, complete with cascading waterfalls and a winding waterslide—playful additions that don’t compromise the estate’s serenity. A fully outfitted summer kitchen stands ready for seasonal entertaining, while the private dock offers direct Intracoastal access for boating enthusiasts.

A STORY OF PRESTIGE

Manalapan is known for discretion, luxury, and long-time generational wealth, but this address comes with a particularly storied history. Past owners include philanthropist Lois Pope and British billionaire Christopher Rokos. Rokos, who acquired the property in 2017 for $40 million, invested heavily in its renovation, preserving its soul while modernizing every amenity.

Today, the home is a turnkey masterpiece, being offered fully furnished. The interiors were crafted by the award-winning team at Marc-Michaels Interior Design, whose signature style blends sophistication with livable elegance. Their design not only honors the estate’s Balinese spirit, but elevates it with tailored luxury that’s both indulgent and timeless.

LIFESTYLE AND LEGACY

Ownership at 1370 S Ocean Boulevard also includes coveted membership at the La Coquille Club within Eau Palm Beach Resort, just minutes away. It’s a touchpoint to Palm Beach society and adds to the overall value and exclusivity of this offering.

But the real allure lies in the lifestyle: the sense of total privacy, the seamless flow of indoor and outdoor living, and the rare dualwaterfront location that allows for both sunrise and sunset views— an experience money can seldom buy.

A RARE OPPORTUNITY

As one of the most significant residential listings in Florida, this estate doesn’t just offer a place to live. It offers a way to live—immersed in beauty, surrounded by water, wrapped in total serenity. For those looking to make a legacy purchase, 1370 S Ocean Boulevard is less a real estate opportunity and more a once-in-a-lifetime invitation.

TENNIS WELLNESS & THE 47-WEEK WORKOUT

WHY IT’S TIME TO GET BACK ON THE TENNIS COURT

For many New Yorkers, tennis conjures up iconic images of the U.S. Open – the electric energy of late-summer matches under the lights. Names of my childhood like McEnroe, Connors, Navratilova, King, Evert and Agassi come to mind. For today, Federer, Djokovic, Nadal, Williams and Graf are prevalent. But beyond the glamour of pro play lies an underappreciated truth: tennis is one of the most complete, accessible, and enduring forms of exercise available to people of all ages. At a time when wellness has taken center stage in our fair city, and with the resurgence of racket sports in the cultural ethos, it’s time to reconsider the tennis court not just as a stage for champions, but as a training ground for everyday health.

HE

HIDDEN ENGINE BEHIND AMERICAN TENNIS

While the U.S. Open enjoys the spotlight each September, the real lifeblood of the sport is beating strong the other 47 weeks of the year. At the home of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, programming continues year-round—from junior and senior sessions to adaptive tennis for players with disabilities, birthday parties, seasonal camps, and tournament play.

According to Dale Evans, Director of Tennis Operations, USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, “This infrastructure isn’t just about tennis—it’s about community health.”

Evans continued, “We run every kind of program you can think of—adult leagues, kids’ camps, school break clinics. We are basically the other 47 weeks.”

This consistent programming provides the foundation for what experts are increasingly recognizing as a top-tier sport for both fitness and longevity.

THE FITNESS SECRET IN PLAIN SIGHT

It turns out, tennis isn’t just fun—it’s one of the healthiest sports in the world. In fact, studies have shown that tennis can increase a person’s average life expectancy by nearly 10 years. That’s a staggering, and very true, figure. According to Evans, the key to this is in the sport’s unique blend of physical demands: anaerobic bursts of speed, agility, balance, and coordination, all packed into an ever-changing rhythm of play.

Each point lasts just 7 to 11 seconds on average. That translates to a series of short, explosive sprints, sharp directional changes, and lightning-fast reflexes. Unlike jogging or steady-state cardio, tennis provides dynamic high-intensity interval training (HIIT) in disguise. The sport engages every muscle group—legs for lateral movement, core for balance, arms and shoulders for serves and overheads, and the brain for constant tactical recalibration.

“Tennis is really a fusion of multiple sports,” said Evans. “You’ve got the throwing mechanics of baseball, the footwork of soccer, the handeye coordination of volleyball, and the sprint bursts of basketball. It’s rare to find all those components in a single game.”

Even solo hitting—on a wall or with a ball machine—provides an aerobic and muscular workout that’s accessible to anyone with a racquet and a few spare minutes.

THE SOCIAL MULTIPLIER

Still, it’s not just the physicality of tennis that makes it special—it’s the built-in social structure. Unlike many recreational sports that fall off in adulthood due to logistics or time commitments, tennis adapts. You can rally one-on-one, play doubles, join a local ladder, or just hit against a wall. For New Yorkers, that flexibility is gold. As an example, my Dad, who was a highly successful ad executive and agency owner that traveled most weeks of the year, used to use a backboard at West 91st street playground at the wee hours of the morning. That still allowed him to be at his desk at dawn. Then on weekends, at our country club upstate, he would play against friends, participate in tournaments and doubles matches as well.

“Tennis is a sport where promotions are discussed, marriages are born, and lifelong friendships are formed,” said Evans. “It’s a multigenerational game. You can play with your kids or your grandkids. And unlike team sports like baseball or basketball, you don’t need a full roster—just a partner or a court.”

The USTA’s “Drive for 35” initiative aims to have 35 million Americans playing the sport by 2035. It’s an ambitious goal, but one grounded in the belief that tennis can be more than recreation—it can be a national health solution.

PICKLEBALL VS. TENNIS: THE RACKET RIVALRY

Of course, any conversation about tennis today inevitably brushes up against the very loud rise of pickleball. With its sharp paddle hits and smaller courts, the game has spread rapidly across the country, taking over parks and community centers. For some tennis loyalists, that growth feels like an encroachment. In my humble opinion, pickleball has become a manic and very unhealthy obsession in our city.

“There’s nothing more annoying than trying to play tennis and hearing the pop-pop-pop of pickleball paddles next door,” said a Manhattan resident who plays tennis near a pickleball court and happens to live near one as well. “It’s taken over a lot of the old tennis spaces and the players are as obnoxious as the cyclists in Central Park that don’t heed signs or signals.”

But USTA leaders see the dynamic differently. “Pickleball actually borrowed a lot from tennis’ playbook,” Evsn noted, citing adult league structures, community engagement, and social play. The real difference, they argue, lies in physicality.

“Pickleball is almost entirely lateral—it lacks the forward, backward, and vertical movement that makes tennis a full-body challenge,” he said. “Tennis players sprint, stop, jump, and shift constantly. It’s peaks and valleys of intensity. That’s why the physical benefits are so pronounced.”

Still, both sports offer social value. For those craving more dynamic movement, varied exercise, and longevity-building benefits, tennis retains the edge.

COMING BACK TO THE COURT

For many Gen Xers who grew up watching the McEnroeConnors rivalry, or even playing at public courts around NYC, the love of the game never faded. What faded was access. With court space in Manhattan limited (and increasingly privatized), and the demands of adult life weighing down, tennis fell off the calendar.

But now, with the wellness conversation shifting toward sustainable lifestyle changes and subtle daily movement, tennis may be ripe for a renaissance.

“There are courts in Central Park, Riverside Park, Queens, Brooklyn—it’s not always easy, but it’s possible,” said Evans. “Even if you only hit once a week, that’s a huge step for your health.”

Programs like Tennis on Campus and adaptive tennis have also opened the game to wider audiences, offering college students and players with disabilities a new way in. For middle-aged New Yorkers, that means more flexibility than ever.

And it doesn’t take much to restart. A racquet. A court. A friend. The only thing missing is you!

SET, MATCH

Tennis isn’t just a sport—it’s a full-body, all-ages, social wellness solution hidden in plain sight. It builds muscle. It boosts brain function. It connects people. And yes, it even adds years to your life.

So, whether you’re picking up a racquet for the first time or dusting one off after a couple of decades, the court is waiting. And with public facilities across the city and new programming rolling out each season, there’s never been a better time to serve up a healthier future.

THE FAUX-PO

A LIFESAVER ON SO MANY LEVELS

In today’s world of filters and optics, it can be easy to think that everyone’s appearance is perfect. When I started having hair problems, I was very public about the fact that I was using wigs and clip-on pony’s both on TV and off. Every time I shared this; it went viral. Hair loss affects millions of women. Yet hiding it is so common that when I spoke openly about it, the issue really resonated. Here’s my story.

When I experienced extreme hair breakage, I did what I’ve done hundreds of times in the operating room during a critical moment — I went into fullon medical response mode. Except this time, the patient was me, and the emergency was my hair (Ok, this might be slightly over-dramatized, but you get the point of the analogy).

This was not a case of a few split ends. My hair was breaking in ways I hadn’t seen before, and the more I tried to cover it up with styling, the worse it became. As a physician, I knew I had to take a step back, cast a wide net, and think like a clinician. What’s the cause? What are the risks? What’s the treatment? My hair needed help, fast.

I had to make sweeping changes like stopping highlights and daily styling, focusing on nutrition and supporting my hair from the inside out with targeted supplements; scaling back on shampoos and heat, product, and pulling that happens from styling for television every day. Just like stopping a bleed in the ER, I had to “stop the bleeding” on my head.

What I didn’t expect: the solution wasn’t just medical. It was also emotional and behavioral. I needed a confidence boost, something that allowed me to show up to work or social events, feel polished, and still give my hair the rest it desperately needed. That’s when I found my faux-po — a faux ponytail.

Let me say this clearly: the faux-po saved me. She was easy, elegant, and gave me that professional edge onair while allowing my real hair to rest underneath. She’s what I like to call a “resuscitative accessory”— both fashionable and functional. Like a stylish little CPR for my scalp.

But it wasn’t just the faux-po. It was an all-out hair version of 911. Here’s what worked for me, and what might work for you:

REST: A major part of my hair situation was due to an occupational hazard. Having my hair professionally styled 5 days a week for 12 years when I was the Chief Medical Correspondent at ABC News destroyed my hair. The heat, the pulling, the products, the studio lights- it was a recipe for disaster. “Resting” it, with my faux-po, allowed me to still look presentable on air, or out with friends, but not subject my whole head to frequent styling damage.

WRAP IT UP: I did this too! I figured if it could work for J Lo, maybe it could work for me too! On days that my hair was a mess, but I had to go out, I would wrap my head in a chic silk scarf! It was more than a fashion accessory, it was protective. A snug wrap keeps hair from tangling and breaking. Plus, on days when shedding is especially frustrating, a wrap can shield both your strands and your self-esteem.

RECONSIDER COLOR: Personally, I used to get my hair highlighted roughly every 10 weeks. But once my hair was in crisis, I spaced that out to 12. It may not seem like a lot, but every little bit helps. If you’re going through a hair setback, now may be the perfect time to reconnect with your natural color. Or, if you do color, look for ammonia-free formulas. They’re less aggressive.

BRUSH EASY: Any hair expert will tell you: the weakest time for your hair is when it is wet. I know this presents a conundrum: how are you supposed to detangle your hair after washing it if you can’t brush it? Just give it some time to become damp (not wet) and use a wide tooth comb. And don’t brush your hair 100 times a day. I don’t.

PRODUCT TEMPERANCE: Scan ingredient lists— if alcohol is high on the label, think twice. Look for hydrating formulas and avoid those promising extreme hold or volume at the cost of strand health.

FIND YOUR SHAMPOO SWEET SPOT: There’s no one-size-fitsall. I now shampoo every 3–4 days, depending on how my scalp feels. Experiment until you find what keeps your hair clean but not stripped. It’s a balance between resting your hair and keeping your scalp clean.

THE BRAVE NEW WORLD OF WIGS AND HAIR PIECES: This was the single most helpful thing I did! Sometimes, the best thing you can do is take your hair out of the equation entirely—and that’s where wigs, clipins, and faux-ponytails come in. I never thought I’d wear one, but now I can say I love mine! Even though my hair has recovered, I will never stop using my faux-po! Choosing a faux-po or wig doesn’t mean giving up. It means taking control. It’s low-maintenance, polished, and gives your natural hair the space to breathe and repair. Plus, you can have fun with it—try a different length, wave, or color without any damage. It’s as much about saving time and preserving my hair as it is about fashion! I have been so transparent about my faux-po and I think that is why it’s worked for me. I don’t try to pass it off as my real hair, any more than I would try to pass off my lashes with mascara as being naturally long! To me, it’s no different than changing my earrings. And I love how easy it is!

FROM BREAKAGE TO BREAKTHROUGH: Resuscitating my hair was medical, emotional, and aesthetic. And just like in medicine, the key was being proactive, informed, and patient. If you’re going through something similar, know this: you’re not alone. There are beautiful, practical tools— like the faux-po—that can help you feel like you again. It requires time and patience, but your hair can improve!

STAYING FIT WHILE HAVING SUMMER FUN IS EASY

Summer can be a blast—but it’s also easy to fall off your health and fitness game with all the travel, parties, and dietary indulgences. The key is consistency and simplicity, not perfection. Here’s my realistic, actionable approach to staying active, maintaining your metabolism, keeping your body feeling “New York” good, wherever you are!

SUMMER FITNESS SURVIVAL ADVICE

During the summer, every weekend presents an opportunity to ignore your health and wellness. Let’s be honest, it is summer, and you are spending time with family and friends over a barbecue, at a pool or beach party or bouncing between clubs and bars. You are going to skip workouts, eat food you normally wouldn’t and more. My advice is to shift your mindset to “minimum effective dose.’’ Instead of skipping workouts altogether because they’re not perfect, aim for short, efficient sessions. These should be about 15–30 minutes each. After all, something is always better than nothing.

You can also use travel and parties as built-in movement opportunities. Think about this: when you are outdoors, walk or bike whenever possible. At a club or bar, dance! Dance at backyard parties if the groove is there. Of course, you are going to want to spend time lazing around the pool or beach. And there is nothing wrong with that. But you can also blend that with active excursions on trips to offset some of the time lost!

DON’T WAIT FOR MOTIVATION—SET TRIGGERS AND ROUTINES

Getting motivated to work out during a vacation or on a weekend of parties and the pool is not simple. But it is important to set triggers and either establish or re-establish healthy routines during the week. Try this:

• Morning = short workout

• Travel = walk/jog in new area

• Party day = fasted morning movement and hydration

• Hotel room = bodyweight circuit

MITIGATE INDULGENCES, DON’T STRESS THEM

I love party weekends and excursions to the beach are a blast. But that doesn’t mean you have to suffer for your party-mood! You need to remember to hydrate before and after drinking. Always eat protein and veggies before drinking. The next day, just reset and move forward. If you need to rest for a headache, then just remind yourself next time you’re out that you need to drink more water before and after drinking. The rule of thumb is 1:1, so for every drink with one ounce of grain alcohol, you need to one glass of water.

NO-EQUIPMENT EXERCISE PLAN

When you travel, or take that quick weekend jaunt, you don’t need to sign up to the local gym for the trip to stay fit. Try these moves as they hit all major muscle groups, boost your metabolism, and can be done “anywhere” — hotel room, beach, park, or living room.

Full Body Warm-Up (3–5 mins total)

These prep your joints, raise your core temperature, and activate key muscles.

1. Full body warmup known as World’s Greatest Stretch because it’s full body that targets core activation, joint mobility, upper and lower body dynamic movements.

Steps: fold forward to try and touch your toes. As you are moving forward, brace your movement with your hands and walk them out until you’re in a starting pushup position. From here, rotate your right foot forward and “step” it to the outside of your right hand. From here, rotate your right hand and torso up to the right. Come back to the starting position by rotating back down, stepping back to pushup starting position, and walking your hands back toward your feet until standing. 5 per side alternating.

2. Jumping Jacks (30 sec)

Gets heart rate up, opens up chest and shoulders while warming hips and ankles.

Metabolism Boosting Full-Body Strength Moves

Do 2–3 rounds of 30 seconds each, minimal rest between moves.

1. Bodyweight Squat to Press-Upward

While holding any weight (get creative) in your hands at shoulder height, squat down into a traditional squat and on the way up press upward toward the sky. Total body metabolism boost**

2. Planking Shoulder Taps (30 sec-60 sec)

While holding starting pushup position, brace your core and alternate tapping each shoulder while moving as little as possible.

Cardio Options

1. High Knees (30-60 seconds)

While standing simply march each leg alternative and driving your knees upward. As you progress, you’ll be able to jog in place while maintaining driving your knees upward.

2. Mountain Climbers (30-60 sec)

Same concept as choice 1 but you are horizontal holding the starting pushup position

3. Jump rope WITH NO ROPE (30 - 60 sec)

Simply pretend to be holding the handle of a jumprope in each hand (it’s more fun and impactful than you’d think) PLUS you don’t have to worry about tripping over the rope and starting over!

QUICK BONUS TIPS FOR STICKING WITH IT

• Download a timer app or save this routine on your notes app.

• Hungover? A light walk and a ton of water are your best friends. No guilt.

• Partying later? Morning workout with sweating will help metabolize later indulgences better.

PMT DANCE HOW DANCING CAN HELP KEEP

THAT SUMMER FIGURE

A pillar in the community for over 24 years, PMT Dance welcomes dancers of any experience and ability. I found owner and founder Pavan Thimmaiah 8 years ago when I was looking for 1:1 break dancing lessons to get me ready to surprise my guests on wedding day – this coming from someone that didn’t have a lick of dance experience and dare I say very little “musicality” as the pros refer to it, in my blood.

I was able to learn the basic, enough to put on a bit of a show come wedding day, but only because I was physically and mentally ready to challenge myself and take it on. Dance, whether it’s breaking, hip hop, choreography, club dance or even just comfortably moving on the dance floor is a great way to get some exercise during the summer months that offer parties and social gatherings!

And, if you are looking for someone to help teach you, I would highly recommend PMT Dance to anyone of any skill level. They offer a variety of Hip Hop, Popping, Street Jazz and Breaking classes to help get you ready for the dancefloor anywhere! To learn more, please visit pmthouseofdance.com

HEALTHY MOUTH, HEALTHY BODY

THE SILENT SHIFT: HOW MENOPAUSE IMPACTS YOUR TEETH AND GUM HEALTH

Menopause is a natural part of aging. While hot flashes, mood swings, and changes in menstrual cycles are well-known symptoms, one lesser-discussed, yet important, area it affects is oral health—particularly teeth and gums. ONE in four women will lose a tooth in the first five years of menopause due to gum and bone loss! As hormone levels drop, especially estrogen, a major impact can happen.

HORMONAL CHANGES AND ORAL HEALTH

Estrogen plays a vital role in maintaining the health of bones— including the jawbone that supports your teeth—and mucous membranes like the gums. During menopause, declining estrogen levels can lead to several dental issues, such as: dry mouth (xerostomia), gum inflammation (gingivitis), increased risk of periodontal disease, bone loss, tooth sensitivity and mobility.

These symptoms may creep in slowly but can become quite noticeable over time, especially if dental hygiene isn’t a top priority.

DRY MOUTH: A COMMON AND DISRUPTIVE SYMPTOM

One of the most prevalent oral symptoms during menopause is dry mouth. Saliva isn’t just there to keep the mouth moist; it’s essential for washing away food particles, neutralizing acids, and preventing bacterial overgrowth. When saliva production decreases due to hormonal changes, your risk for cavities, gum disease, and oral infections increases. Women can complain of burning mouths, difficulty swallowing food, and bad breath.

GUM DISEASE AND BLEEDING GUMS

Hormonal fluctuations can make gums more sensitive, red, and prone to bleeding—even with routine brushing and flossing. This inflammation can be an early sign of gingivitis, which, if left untreated, may progress into periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease is a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue and can destroy the bone that supports your teeth. In postmenopausal women, this risk is significantly increased due to reduced estrogen and, consequently, decreased bone density.

BONE LOSS AND TOOTH LOSS

Osteoporosis is commonly associated with menopause, and the jawbone is no exception. As bone density diminishes, the structural support for teeth weakens. This can lead to loose teeth, shifting of teeth and an increased risk of tooth loss.

Studies show that postmenopausal women with osteoporosis are three times more likely to experience tooth loss compared to women without bone loss.

BURNING MOUTH SYNDROME

A lesser-known condition that may arise during or after menopause is burning mouth syndrome (BMS). It causes a painful, burning sensation in the tongue, lips, and other areas of the mouth, often without any visible signs. Though the exact cause is not fully understood, hormonal changes are believed to be a contributing factor. BMS can be frustrating and negatively impact quality of life, especially when paired with dry mouth.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PROTECT YOUR ORAL HEALTH

The good news? While menopause can affect your teeth and gums, preventive care and lifestyle changes can go a long way in maintaining a healthy mouth.

Here are some tips:

• Stay hydrated: Drinking water frequently can help relieve dry mouth and flush away food particles.

• Good oral hygiene: Brush twice daily with a ph balanced toothpaste with minerals like hydroxyapatite that can strengthen teeth and help with sensitivity and floss daily. I recommend intelliWHiTe Hap 10 + super paste or Smile Saver.

• Visit your dentist regularly: A dentist can detect early signs of gum disease or bone loss and suggest treatment options.

• Eat a bone-friendly diet: Foods rich in calcium and vitamin D help maintain bone density.

• Consider hormone therapy: For some women, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may help reduce symptoms of menopause, including those affecting the mouth.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Menopause is a significant life transition that impacts much more than reproductive health. Paying attention to oral symptoms—like dry mouth, bleeding gums, or increased tooth sensitivity—can help you catch problems early and protect your smile for years to come.

If you’re approaching or going through menopause speak to your dentist about keeping your oral health up to par when navigating these hormonal changes.

THE MINDIE METHOD

ADDRESSING LIFE’S DISPARITIES

Psychotherapist, wellness coach, author, and speaker Mindie Barnett answers your questions about life, navigating these stressful and uncertain times, and steering you down a more straight forward path. We welcome your questions and invite you to contact Mindie at:  mindiesmusings1@gmail.com

Mindie is available for in-person and virtual psychotherapy sessions via her Executive Health by Mindie Barnett Psychotherapy practice. Her expertise is in interpersonal relationships, overcoming depression, coping with anxiety and avoiding and overcoming burnout among many other wellness areas. Life coaching and career coaching are also areas she excels in. For more information or to schedule a session visit mbexecutivehealth.com

Dear Mindie,

I’m ashamed to admit it, but I am the other woman. I don’t want to be but I am. I met my boyfriend “Alex” two years ago at a hotel bar in the city, after having a girls’ night out with three friends. He was there, alone, as he was traveling for business, and we were immediately drawn to each other. At first, we were friends. We exchanged some laughs at the bar and then our phone numbers and stayed in touch with texts and eventually calls. That turned into a dinner, the next time he was in town, which turned into another get-together and then an intentional visit to New York to see me. That visit was when we became lovers and we’ve been seeing each other once a month (sometimes more) ever since. In between we text and call and Facetime a lot.

He says he’s not happy. How could he be? He’s with me, not her, for intimacy and connection! But he doesn’t have a plan to leave. He has two teenage children and says he’ll consider divorcing his wife when they go off to college. But how can I be sure? I’m in my forties and I don’t want to waste my best years waiting to see if he will follow through. I don’t want to give up on my soulmate, though, and make a mistake and leave if he is my person. Please help!

Sincerely, Love Lost

Dear Love Lost,

Affairs are messy. You’re in a triangular relationship with your boyfriend and his wife. This is not a healthy romantic dyad and it’s not reality. That’s the first element you need to understand and accept. There are many reasons why men cheat. Sometimes it’s because they’re unhappy in their marriage, they are looking for validation or they lack self-esteem, just to name a few. However, you need to dig deep and search for the reasons you are willing to accept a fraction of what a healthy romantic relationship is supposed to look like, in addition to the fact you are lacking a real partnership. My hypothesis is that you lack self-esteem in some small way or have been a victim of some sort of interpersonal trauma, you may not even be aware of.

My best advice is that you end this relationship immediately. From my perspective, he has already made his choice and that is to remain in his marriage and with his family. You can only act on what’s going on here and now.

There is also no easy way to end things so the faster and the swifter, the better. A phone call or text is best so that you are not putting yourself in a situation to get manipulated back into his fold, should you connect in person. Know that you must also allow yourself the necessary time to mourn. While you didn’t share a life with this person, you did share a connection, and you need to give yourself permission to heal. Leaning on friends, family and seeking the help of a professional therapist will also help you not only move past this period feeling more resilient but provide you with a solid foundation to begin your next relationship from a healthier place.

Best of luck in love and life!

ROOTS MINDFUL ACUPUNCTURE

A SANCTUARY FOR THE BODY-MIND CONNECTION IN MIDTOWN

Healing from the inside out sounds dreamy. Something that would be more natural, less toxic than we are used to, and maybe longer lasting than Western Medicine. But does it work and is there proof?

Yes. Yes. Yes.

I sat down with Dr. Michiko Yoshifuji DAc., Dipl. Ac., L.Ac of ROOTS Mindful Acupuncture on East 41st Street near Bryant Park. Yes, she has a lot of accolades and letters after her name. But I wanted to know more about the human Michiko - the one who volunteered at a clinic for underprivileged patients in rural Nepal, and the woman who believes that her mindful and kind approach can really change lives.

Michiko’s practice is set in a beautiful space that feels like a spa –with crystals hanging from the ceiling and even a moss wall feature. Gorgeous and orchestrated with patient healing in mind, Michiko created a Feng Shui design where each session room is unique and incorporates the five elements – wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. It feels centering, safe, peaceful and oasis-like in crazy NYC.

Michiko knew that ROOTS Mindful Acupuncture needed to be a sanctuary for her patients, many of whom are stressed out professionals, as well as couples with infertility issues, and patients with medical conditions that aren’t being fully supported elsewhere.

Chiso is credited for introducing acupuncture to Japan in the sixth century. Prior, acupuncture was used in China from around 100 BCE. Since then, Japanese acupuncture for medical reasons, and even beauty, is as popular as getting your hair or nails done. A preventative approach for both ailments and wrinkles is the norm (Michiko said it is like toxin-free Botox!), throwing pills at sicknesses just isn’t the go-to solution.

A whole-body approach is taken in Japanese acupuncture, and that’s where our appointment started. Michiko asked me questions I’ve never been asked by my PCP. “Let me see the color of your tongue” (I need to drink more water) “let me touch your skin”, and more.

It was clear that Michiko wasn’t only interested in the problem, she wanted to explore the underlying cause be it physical, mental or emotional. Michiko explained “in acupuncture we treat the root cause, we don’t mask symptoms, we want to treat the reason for the imbalance in the body that is leading to disease and pain. Then, we can regain the flow of Qi, or vital energy, through the body.”

I was willing to give it a go. Any practice that’s been around for 1,500+ years seems like one to believe. And Michiko had such a calm about her that I didn’t mind she was about to stab me with a bunch of little needles.

As I relaxed, Michiko started inserting the needles into various parts of my body. I barely felt a thing. Japanese acupuncture uses very fine needles, and at ROOTS, Michiko uses the highest quality needles to ensure her patients have the best experience possible.

With close to 25 needles, I lay in a state of utter relaxation while the acupuncture did its thing. I felt relaxed, centered, and knew as I lay there I’d want to come back for more.

Michiko has a very kind, trusting and endearing nature where even her touch feels like positive energy is traveling through to you.

It was that kindness that brought Michiko to rural Nepal in 2023 to volunteer for an underserved community. Her biggest take away: “these beautiful people had no running water, electricity; the comforts we are used to. There wasn’t a doctor nearby. Yet they were not stressed much. They had ailments from hard labor and the life they lived, but they were so happy and full of light. In NYC we have everything we want at our fingertips, and so much stress. We need to learn to be more mindful and centered, for the sake of our health.”

We could all learn to be a little less stressed and have more gratitude. And when that feels too difficult to achieve, Michiko is there to help us.

I’ll definitely visit ROOTS again. Since my appointment I’ve tried to live more mindfully. Somehow, just knowing that Michiko is there for when I have jetlag, feel burned out, or have pain, is super comforting. Needles and all.

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME

YANKEE STADIUM HITS A CULINARY GRAND SLAM

Ihave spent every summer of my life going to Yankee Stadium. After all, I am a second-generation New York Yankees fan. And I can tell you the day that they opened the new Yankee Stadium, I was in awe of the homerun the team hit with their new fare. And while it has improved every season since, 2025’s culinary offerings are truly a World Series-level win!

The Yankees have once again elevated the fan experience by unveiling a refreshed food and beverage menu that pays homage to New York’s melting pot of flavors. From iconic five borough favorites to gourmet reimagining of ballpark classics, there’s never been a better reason to arrive at the game hungry.

A TASTE OF THE WORLD

This year, the stadium brought in a wave of new vendors, with fare from across the globe, each adding their own spice to the game-day ritual.

Brooklyn Dumpling Shop, created by restaurateur and friend Stratis Morfogen during the pandemic, known for its flavorful combinations and distinct cuisine, now brings its creative, handheld dumplings to the Bronx. Think buffalo chicken, kung pao, and Korean BBQ rib eye, each one packed with punch and flavor — ideal for fans who want something quick, delicious, and different.

Adding Caribbean flair to the mix, Caribbean Food Delights serves a Stuffed Jamaican Beef Patty that’s both savory and spicy. The patty is sliced open and filled with jerk BBQ aioli and cilantrolime slaw — a fusion that’s drawing long lines before first pitch.

Nuchas Empanadas offers a nod to Argentina with their portable pastries stuffed with everything from beef and chipotle chicken to a vegan pinto bean blend. These flaky, flavorful options are perfect for grabbing between innings.

At “Bondi Sushi,” located at the Audi Club, you will be able to get your sushi fix with Nigiri, hot and crispy hand rolls, sashimi or craveable crispy rice.

On the sweeter side, Sweet P Bakery delivers not only jumbo cookies like snickerdoodles filled with dulce de leche, but also an inspiring mission: employing adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, giving fans a chance to support a good cause while indulging their sweet tooth.

GOURMET TWISTS ON GAME-DAY CLASSICS

Some of the most buzzed-about offerings come from returning favorites with new creations that aim to wow.

Celebrity chef Christian Petroni, a Bronx native and Food Network star, debuts “Nonna’s Meatballs” — crispy fried meatballs served with cheesy garlic bread and marinara, a nostalgic taste of Italian-American comfort food. It’s important to note that Petroni also appeared on “Beat Bobby Flay” with the culinary legend himself (who has Bobby’s Burgers located in section 132). For dessert, Petroni serves up a showstopping tiramisu layered in a Yankees mini helmet — the kind of over-the-top treat that Instagram dreams are made of. And let’s not forget about the dessert that Petroni worked with NY legend Mister Softee to create: a sundae with vanilla ice cream, hazelnut hot fudge, cannoli praline crunch, and vanilla panna!

Lobel’s, a name synonymous with high-end meats, now offers BBQ filet-tip loaded tater tots. This hearty dish combines tender steak, cheddar, and crispy onions over a bed of tots — a five-star twist on ballpark comfort food.

Mighty Quinn’s, a NYC BBQ staple, joins the roster with a chipotle BBQ chicken sandwich that balances smoky, tangy, and sweet flavors. It’s served with crunchy slaw and pickles, giving fans a Southern-inspired treat without leaving the Bronx.

DESSERTS & DRINKS THAT SWING FOR THE FENCES

Dessert and drink options round out the menu with playful and refreshing options. The Candy Corner Shake — a rainbow-sprinkled vanilla ice cream shake topped with whipped cream, strawberry sauce, cotton candy, and a lollipop — is made for kids and nostalgic adults alike.

Petroni’s tiramisu is another fan favorite, but Yankee Stadium also caters to beer lovers with its New York Legendary Ale, brewed exclusively in partnership with Goose Island for the Yankees. It’s a smooth, golden ale that’s quickly become a fan favorite.

SOMETHING FOR EVERY FAN

Yes, my favorite team thought of people like my wife too (she’s a veghead while I am a caveman carnivore)! Vegan and gluten-free options are everywhere at Yankee Stadium, from falafel bowls and Beyond Burgers to chickpea salads and gluten-free chicken tenders. No one is left out of the feast.

And who could forget about our favorite grocery delivery company? At the FreshDirect Terrace (above the visitor’s bullpen), fans can enjoy a FreshDirect Pineapple Cup which has fresh cut pineapple, sweet & spicy chamoy sauce, with a lime wedge. And, yes, it is something my wife can eat!

IL BUCO ALIMENTARI

RUSTIC MEDITERRANIAN ON A WHOLE NEW LEVEL

Il Buco Alimentari, a rustic Mediterranean eatery located in the heart of Noho, almost right next door to the late artist Jean Michel Basquiat’s old studio, is a true standout. It’s one of the few places that makes their own breads, cheeses and salumeria items. Set in an old lumber supply store, Al Buco Alimentari has high tin ceilings, exposed brick walls and an open kitchen placed way in the back; the dining room is large but you can see your dishes being prepared no matter how far away you’re seated. What’s especially endearing about Il Buco Alimentari space is that the front third of its space is used as old-fashioned Italian deli with charcuterie, cheese, homemade bread and more for sale.

Speaking of bread, when you sit down at your table you will be brought the most amazing rustic breads ranging anywhere from whole wheat to sourdough to olive. It’s likely that the loaves only came out of the oven five or six hours before you sat down, and when you take a bite, you’ll swear it’s the best bread in town—especially since it is served with opaque herbed deep green EVOO that is reminiscent of pesto.

HOUSE MADE IS THE ONLY WAY

We just had to tell Executive Chef Amelia Kirk that we were very impressed that so many classic Italian items are house made, and how the bread blew us away. We loved both the sourdough and olive bread and hope to go back to try new types in the near future, even if it just means running to the front store area to buy some fresh loaves to go. Which breads are the most popular? Kirk reveals, “I believe our most popular breads currently are the Filone, Olive Filone and Whole Wheat. I feel like the Filone is a very simple sourdough. We bake it with a nice thin crust; it has a soft and creamy crumb and a mild tang from the sourdough levain. The Olive Filone is a fan favorite because of those same qualities but with the addition of the buttery/briny olive. The whole wheat is pretty special since we are sourcing NY state regenerative farmed whole wheat that is stone ground in Brooklyn by one of the only mills here in the city. We tend to bake our bread slightly darker than most bakeries here in the city (resulting in a deep crunch in the crust).”

A lot of guests just come in for plates of the 15 or so cured meats made on site paired with the aforementioned breads. While Il Buco Alimentari can easily use the same imported meats that other high end restos serve, they make all their own charcuterie from Prosciutto to Bresaola (most of which are made with house-cured heritage breed pork).

Why go through all the fuss? Kirk answers, “Preservation is an incredibly important technique that’s integral to culinary development. It is an ancient practice that is worth preserving. The ability to cure and age our own salumi is a worthwhile practice to continue to produce for our company. We don’t know many other groups producing the same salumi. It’s such a gift to be able to train and pass on these techniques to future generations of cooks.”

FRESH IS THE NAME OF THE GAME

When the New York Lifestyles Magazine foodie team went to Il Buco Alimentari, we partook of some of the aforementioned cured meats as our apps and we have to now announce that you have not tasted great prosciutto until you’ve tasted it made locally! All the charcuterie was all great but we were particularly in love with the prosciutto as it was so fresh—just for the record, it was softer and less salty that the prosciutto that you buy commercially.

We then moved on to sharing a dish of Il Buco Alimentari’s much acclaimed homemade pasta and chose the Celeriac Agnolotti served with Parmesan Brodo, Sesame and Black Truffle. The warm, buttery sauce with hints of truffle was one for the record books of the city’s best sauces! The pasta was tender and almost sweet.

ENTREES THAT YOU’LL CRAVE

We were almost full by the time we got to our entrées. The Wagyu Bavette was served medium rare with Onion Escabeche, Raclette and Maitake Mushrooms. It was a generous portion of beef, about eight ounces and full of rich flavor--accented by the market fresh lightly cooked onions.

The Grilled Black Sea Bass is highly raved about on Yelp! and did not disappoint. It’s served with Squash Puree, Shrimp Butter, Fino Sherry and Roasted Grapes for an incredible mix of flavors.

We also split the Delicata Squash as a side—it was sliced with the skin left on and topped with Brown Butter Ponzu, Pepitas and Shiso. What a sweet and wonderful side (and it was actually healthy)! Our other shared side was the Roasted Sunchokes with Sunflower Butter and Beemsters Gouda. These sunchokes were roasted until they had brown and crispy edges, and the soft gouda was the perfect flavor accent.

DRAMATIC DESSERTS

The desserts at Il Buco Alimentari vary week to week but they will also be surprisingly unique; there are modern spins on classics like Flourless Chocolate Cake and Zabaglione. There are house made cheese platters and gelato selections as well. We shared the incredible Olive Oil Cake (which was topped with Poached Quince and Vin Jaune) and the Crostata (sided with Poached Pear, Fig Jam and Yogurt Gelato). Both items were served warm and the fruit used tasted fresh picked.

We asked Kirk what the most popular items on the Il Buco Alimentari menu are and she remarked that they included “the Lattuga Salad, Spaghetti with Bottarga, Whole Roasted Branzino, and Fried Artichokes. My personal favorites right now are the Chittara Neri A La Vongole and the Branzino.”

Being in a notoriously “arty” neighborhood, Il Buco Alimentari has a lot of customers with adventurous palettes. We had to ask Kirk about the mix of guests and she responded, “Our clientele is relatively varied; we have a lot of neighborhood regulars as well as longtime supporters, artists, creatives and out-of-towners.”

The bottom line is that Il Buco Alimentari is unique because of nearly everything being created from scratch right down to the cheeses. The staff is warm and will treat you like family from the moment you set foot in the door. The outdoor tables are great for people watching when the weather is nice.

Chef Kirk’s love for Il Buco Alimentari grows deeper the longer that she works there. She concludes with a smile, “I’ve worked in the restaurant industry over the last 17 years. The highlight of working at Il Buco Alimentari has been the ability to collaborate with talented people, and opportunity to work with high quality, seasonal ingredients. The history here is important to NY restaurants, and having grown up here, important to me.”

Coming up next for the restaurant will be adding more locally sourced seafood, and Chef Kirk says she is working her magic on creating different versions of crudo with citrus and the Japanese chili citrus paste known as Green Cara Cara Kosho.

GREAT BITES

MAY IS DELICIOUS: CINCO DE MAYO, MEMORIAL DAY & MOM

May is a brilliant month for culinary. A lot of creativity goes into spring flavors and then there’s the start of summer grilling season. Put Mother’s Day (the biggest restaurant day of the year) right in the middle, and it makes this month even more special! Just thinking about it makes me want to scream YUMMO!

Every May, I try to help our readers celebrate Cinco de Mayo (the day Mexico defeated the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862). This year I just couldn’t help myself and called my friends at FreshDirect (FD) to chip in (pun intended). And they delivered (yes, another pun) in their usual classy, professional style! Both my guacamole and salsa fresca recipes are fresh and full of flavor, so try to serve within two hours of making them (one hour in the fridge to set) for the best experience.

FRESHDIRECT’S CHILI MANGO MARGARITA

Instructions

Place Tajín seasoning on a plate. Halve the lime, then rub one of the cut sides over the rims of two tumblers. Dip the rims into the Tajín and set aside. Squeeze the juice from the lime.

Slice down the sides of the pits inside the mangos and remove the flesh in chunks. Place in a blender, along with the lime juice, tepache, tequila, and Grand Mariner. Blend on high until smooth.

Add the ice and continue blending until thick and frosty. Pour into prepared glasses and serve.

MEMORIAL DAY: THE START OF GRILLING SEASON

Memorial Day serves as the unofficial kickoff to summer, and grilling season. For me, Memorial Day evokes a lot of memories with my Dad. He started teaching me how to barbecue on a charcoal grill when I was just six years old and, yes, safety was a big part of that first lesson! I then spent every summer thereafter learning about barbecue, the ins and outs of the grill, flavors, meats and more from him. My Dad is the reason why I have loved to barbecue for 43 years and am so passionate about a good old fashioned charcoal grill. And I couldn’t be more thankful.

Check out the NYLM Instagram account to see some of the below recipes being made with Josh Axelband, who runs Axelband Kitchen. Josh is one of my best friends and has become an incredible Instagram influencer.

SP’S BARBECUE RIBS

Nothing says summer quite like barbecued ribs, be it baby back, St. Louis-style, or short. If you know what you are doing with them, the flavor of BBQ ribs can be incredible. This is an easy recipe I put together years ago that delivers a flavor-packed experience that you will love for years to come:

Ingredients

• 2½ tablespoons kosher salt

• 1 tablespoon dry mustard

• 1 ½ teaspoon paprika

• 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

• 2 teaspoons garlic powder

• ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

• 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

• ¼ bottle of honey

• 8 pounds baby back pork ribs (8 racks) or St. Louis-style spareribs (4 racks) – FD sells a fav - Hickory Nut Gap

• Low-sodium chicken broth

• 1½ cups barbecue sauce – unless homemade, FD sells my fav - Sweet Baby Ray’s

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350°. Combine spices in a small bowl. Place rack(s) of ribs on a double layer of foil; rub ribs with honey as the binding agent. Sprinkle rub all over ribs and pat into the meat. Wrap racks individually and divide between 2 baking sheets.

Bake ribs until very tender but not falling apart (this is not a fall-off-the-bone recipe): about 2 hours for baby backs and 3 hours for spareribs. Carefully unwrap ribs; pour any juices from foil into a heatproof 4-cup measure. Let ribs cool completely. If you want to do this ahead, you can: Ribs can be baked up to 3 days before (honestly, the flavor will be more developed, and the chill on the ribs will hold them together better on the grill as they heat through). Cover and chill juices. Rewrap ribs in foil and chill.

Build a medium-hot fire in a charcoal grill or heat a gas grill to high. Add broth or water to rib juices to measure 1 1/2 cups. Blend barbecue sauce by whisking.

Grill ribs, basting with barbecue sauce blend and turn frequently, until properly covered and heated throughout, about 7-10 minutes. Transfer to a cutting board; cut between ribs. You can transfer to whatever serving platter you are using and offer extra sauce on the side.

SIMPLE BURGERS ARE BEST

Now let’s talk real all-American BBQ: hamburgers. Simpler is often better! Try this recipe out for grilling burgers. All you need is salt, pepper and garlic powder. The meat should bring the flavor, not endless sauces and spices. Add condiments and toppings for palate preference.

Ingredients

• 1 1/2 pounds ground meat - 80/20 blend. FreshDirect sells Pat LaFrieda pre-formed as well as their own brand – both YUMMO! (If you can get to a real butcher, try a 50/50 ground sirloin & brisket blend)

• Kosher salt, freshly ground black pepper, garlic powder

• 1 1/2 tablespoons oil (canola preferred)

• 4 slices cheese (optional)

• 4 hamburger buns, split; toasted

Instructions

Split the meat into 4 equal portions. Hand shape each portion into a 3/4-inch-thick burger and make a depression in the center with your thumb. Season both sides of each burger with salt, pepper and garlic.

Heat a gas grill to high or heat coals in a charcoal grill until they glow bright orange and ash over. Brush your meat patties with oil on both sides. Grill the burgers until golden brown and slightly charred, about 3 minutes.

Flip. Cook until golden brown and slightly charred on the second side, 4 minutes for medium rare or until cooked to desired degree of doneness.

Add the cheese, if using, to the tops of the burgers during the last minute of cooking and top with a cover, close the grill cover, or tent the burgers with aluminum foil to melt the cheese properly.

Sandwich the hot burgers between the toasted buns and serve immediately.

I love my friends at FreshDirect. We’ve been cooking together for the last two months. Their produce, meats and variety of grocery offerings is just perfect for anyone looking to step up their quality game, especially with spring and summer offerings. SPIRITS OF THE CITY (AND SUMMER)

There are two notables I have to mention in this month’s column: El Bandido Yankee Tequila and Hendrick’s Gin OASIUM.

El Bandido Yankee has quickly become a new favorite tequila of mine. They literally stole my affection; well, they are bandits after all! If you go to NYLM’s Instagram, you will see a video I did of the above FreshDirect Chile Mango Margarita recipe using both their recommended brand as well as El Bandido Yankee Reposado. Try that out as the flavor profile was insanely YUMMO!

To see cocktail recipes and more, please visit ElBandidoYankee.com

Now onto my friends at Hendrick’s Gin. Their new OASIUM variant is brilliant. The aromatics on this are incredible and complimented so beautifully by the citrus finish. I’ve been a fan of Hendrick’s for decades, so when I tell you this one is a winner, you know I really do love it. There are a few cocktail recipes on their website to try, my favorite being the Hendrick’s Gin OASIUM Pegu Club:

Ingredients

• 2 oz Hendrick’s Gin OASIUM

• 1 oz orange liqueur

• ½ oz fresh lime juice

Instructions

Add all ingredients into a shaker with ice. Shake well. Strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a twist of lime or orange peel.

Hendrick’s Gin is truly a brilliant brand with so much craft and creativity behind it. And it has always remained constant! To see this and other recipes, please visit Hendricksgin.com

DOGS LIKE NO OTHER

I’ve talked about my pal Stratis Morfogen and his Diner 24 before. And as I have always said, when it comes to Stratis, I am a huge fan. Have been since we started our friendship some 30+ years ago. I’ve loved virtually every business he has ever opened including Phillipe, Brooklyn Chop House, Brooklyn Dumpling Shop and many, many more. But he is killing it at Diner 24 on East 22nd Street and Third Avenue in the old Lyric Diner space many of us used to hang out in.

It seems like Stratis is rolling out a new dish or creating some different every day at Diner 24. His latest and greatest is called the Mega Dog. Essentially an incredible foot long dog that is so thick it is a meal unto itself. And OMG they are YUMMO! Try the Spicy Bolognese or Bacon Wrapped Mega Dog. Other variants are available, but all come with fries, slaw, mustard and pickles. And if you want sauerkraut, it’s only available on the 24 Mega Dog (plain). The others are already fully loaded with delectable ingredients!

MOTHER’S DAY LOVE

There’s something deeply meaningful about cooking dinner for Mom on Mother’s Day. While flowers and cards are lovely, preparing a meal with your own hands is a something infinitely more special. Think of it as an edible love letter made of aromatics and flavors that represent your love and adoration for the woman who brought you into this world.

The kitchen then becomes a place of tribute to the woman who crafted all of those wonderful childhood meals you yearn to eat again (and that doesn’t mean your husband/wife is a bad cook!). Whether it was Monday Meatloaf, Tuesday tortellini, the Sunday roast or just sitting at the kitchen or dining room table with Mom having pizza on Friday night, those memories are special. And can be the best way to celebrate your love for her.

Now planning the meal is an entirely different thing. Whether it’s her favorite roast chicken with rosemary potatoes, a creamy risotto with spring peas, or a perfectly seared piece of salmon, the goal is to honor her tastes. Maybe it’s a dish she taught you how to make when you were younger, or one she always orders at her favorite restaurant. Either way, the effort and thoughtfulness behind the meal are what make it unforgettable. Even if you aren’t a “home chef” or adept at cooking, believe it or not, the effort is what matters. And remember, this is coming from a guy whose Mom started teaching him how to cook when he was five!

Remember that effort in the kitchen is, as the GI Joe cartoon used to say when I was a boy, only half the battle. Setting the table is just as important. Add some fresh flowers, light a few candles, and maybe even print a little menu. This is her night off — no dishes, no cleanup, just laughter, good conversation, and delicious bites crafted just for her.

Just remember, for this Mother’s Day, the main ingredient is love…and it doesn’t matter if the pasta’s slightly overcooked or the dessert didn’t rise — to Mom, it’s perfect because it’s from you.

For me personally, I want to wish my Mom a very Happy Mother’s Day. Thank you for all that you have taught me, the love you have shown me, and the compassion with which you raised me alongside Dad. I love you, Mom.

SNACK BITES

Why didn’t any of you tell me that during the pandemic, the mad geniuses at Frito-Lay released a variation of their Funyuns product, combining it with Lay’s potato chips?!?! The way Lay’s describes it: “Lay’s Wavy Funyuns combine the savory onion flavor of Funyuns to the crunchy ridges of Original Lay’s Wavy for a tasty, flavorful snack.”

Um, ARE WE KIDDING? It’s flavor heaven for a Funyuns and/or Lay’s fan! You must try this as I literally cannot get enough of them!

The Weeknd (the singer who is also known as Abel Tesfaye) takes the leading role in this thriller, his first feature film as an actor playing a fictional character. Of course, the title is taken from his most recent hit album and his character’s name is “The Weeknd,” so you might wonder where the lines blur. Go along for the ride and discover just how crazy things can get, with Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan in supporting roles as this surreal action flick unfolds.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – THE FINAL RECKONING

Not yet rated Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt for the eighth cinematic outing of the Mission: Impossible team in this companion piece to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, picking up as that one left off. But don’t assume that this once-again action-packed movie is the “final” flick in the franchise that began in 1996, because Cruise and writer-director Christopher McQuarrie have not ruled out more. So, if crowds return to the multiplex to follow the now 29-year-old tale of the IMF and its fearless leader, they will return.

The newest foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe throws together a gang of misfit superheroes who have devolved into a bunch of degenerates. As they team up on a dangerous mission, it’s hard to tell if there are any good guys in their mix. Actors happy to take home a big Marvel paycheck in this new MCU-franchise hopeful include Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Lewis Pullman, Olga Kurylenko, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. We’re just hoping they explain the asterisk in the title.

LILO & STITCH

PG

Lilo & Stitch is Disney’s latest foray into turning their beloved animated features into live-action family flicks, which seemed like a pretty good idea until Snow White released in March and fell flat. This one’s got a lot more laughs, the beautiful Hawaiian scenery and Maia Kealoha, the adorable eight-year-old who plays Lilo, going for it. Plus, Hannah Waddingham and Zach Galifianakis add their general wackiness to the cast, so your kids may clamor to see this one again and again.

When Wes Anderson releases a new movie, we’re usually the first in line, because his visual style alone makes his films incredibly fun to watch. Then add in the always weird and wacky cast of characters he creates and his odd way of telling unexpected stories and we are sucked in every time. His newest stars Benecio del Toro as a wealthy businessman who deals in munitions and Mia Threapleton as his daughter, a nun. Joining in the mayhem are Anderson regulars Jeffrey Wright, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Bryan Cranston, Hope Davis and Benedict Cumberbatch, along with Michael Cera and Riz Ahmed, proving again that when Wes Anderson asks, great actors come running.

BEST FRIENDS ANIMAL SOCIETY AND THE NO-KILL NATION GOAL

A MISSION OF COMPASSION AND CHANGE

In the heart of America’s animal welfare movement, one organization has dared to dream bigger and bolder than any before: Best Friends Animal Society. Under the pawesome leadership of CEO Julie Castle, the organization has transformed what was once considered an impossible ambition — the creation of a No-Kill Nation — into a goal within reach. With 2025 now underway, that goal is no longer an aspiration, but rapidly becoming a reality.

The concept of a “No-Kill Nation” can be easily misunderstood. Rather than suggesting that every single animal can or should be saved, the benchmark is 90%— a humane, data-driven threshold that acknowledges both the limits of veterinary science and the tragic realities of abuse and untreatable illness. As Julie Castle herself explains, this standard is both practical and compassionate. It ensures that shelters are not judged by unrealistic expectations, but by their efforts to save every healthy and treatable animal in their care.

Julie’s rallying cry began in 2016, when she publicly declared that the United States would achieve No-Kill status by 2025. Critics scoffed, calling it an impossible feat. But Julie, ever the determined maverick, saw it differently. Backed by the values of Best Friends Animal Society and a network of passionate animal advocates, she launched one of the most ambitious efforts in the history of animal welfare.

Since then, the numbers have spoken for themselves. From 17 million shelter deaths in per year in 1984 to approximately 415,000 today, the decline is nothing short of revolutionary. That progress has been fueled by a combination of technology, coalition-building, and grassroots mobilization. Best Friends created data-sharing platforms, invested in infrastructure, and launched national campaigns that transformed awareness into action.

A defining moment came in early 2025 when a wildfire ravaged Los Angeles, overwhelming shelters and threatening countless animal lives. Best Friends’ nationwide network sprang into action, relocating more than 1,700 animals within days. The response underscored the strength of a decentralized, collaborative system—a philosophy that Julie has championed from the beginning. In her world, no shelter is too small, no community too remote to be part of the solution.

In fact, it’s often the smallest shelters that have the biggest impact. Many of the remaining shelters that haven’t reached no-kill status are just a few dozen adoptions away. Recognizing this, Best Friends shifted focus to rural communities, offering mentorship, financial support, and boots-on-the-ground assistance. One striking example occurred in Texas, where a single-employee shelter caring for 800 animals reached no-kill status with the help of a Best Friends partner organization.

But while Julie and her team have made monumental strides, challenges persist. A surge in pet purchases from breeders and online platforms has taken place in recent years. Yet even here, glimmers of hope remain. In cities like Chicago and Nashville, shelters are seeing record adoption rates, particularly for cats, suggesting that awareness campaigns are once again resonating.

The No-Kill movement is about more than hitting a number. It’s a cultural transformation—one that reimagines the role of shelters, prioritizes preventive care over crisis response, and champions the idea that animals are family. Best Friends is already working with architects and urban planners to redesign shelter spaces that reflect this philosophy, creating environments filled with natural light, mental stimulation, and opportunities for meaningful human-animal connection.

And when the No-Kill Nation goal is reached this year, that doesn’t mean the work will stop. Instead, it will evolve. The focus will shift from saving lives in crisis to preventing animals from ending up in shelters in the first place. Education, community engagement, and accessible veterinary care will form the bedrock of the next generation of animal welfare.

Julie Castle’s leadership is a testament to what’s possible when vision meets heart. She’s not building an empire—she’s building a legacy of compassion. If she has her way, every shelter in America will follow suit. And if that happens, her greatest wish may come true: that Best Friends Animal Society will have worked itself out of a job, to only help start a new, more compassionate movement toward what can only be called animal equality.

THE CANINE CONNECTION

LIVING LONGER AND STRONGER TOGETHER

Life with a dog is full of joy, love, and companionship. But did you know that your furry friend might just be the key to a longer, healthier life for both of you? As research into longevity science continues to grow, one surprising discovery that has emerged is that the simple act of sharing your life with a dog can improve your health and extend your lifespan.

LONGEVITY: A SIMILAR CONNECTION

Humans and dogs share more in common than many people may realize, especially when it comes to aging. The growing field of longevity science is revealing that the bond between people and dogs goes beyond emotional support, it’s also about biological benefits. Dogs age similarly to us, so studying their life spans gives scientists valuable insights into human aging as well. Research shows that dog owners tend to live longer, recover faster from heart attacks, and even enjoy better brain health. One study even suggests that having a dog could reduce brain age by up to 15 years.

But the benefits don’t stop there. From encouraging daily exercise to providing emotional support, dogs naturally promote healthier lifestyles. Their boundless energy and need for routine walks keep owners physically active, while their unconditional love helps lower stress and anxiety, key factors in heart health and longevity. Given all these health perks, it’s no surprise that having a dog as your wellness partner can make a huge difference in both physical and mental fitness. But just as dogs enhance our lives, we owe it to them to ensure they stay healthy, too. That’s why prioritizing proper nutrition, regular exercise, and overall well-being for both you and your pup is essential.

NUTRITION: SUPPLEMENTATION IS KEY

A healthy diet is essential for longevity for you and your canine companion. The right food and supplements can help both of you live healthier lives, deter age-related illnesses, and keep you feeling energized. We can’t always get all the nutrition we need from food. It’s even more difficult sometimes for pets to get the nutrition they need, especially if their diet consists mainly of kibble. Some supplements I recommend for pets may sound familiar because they are also beneficial for people. If you are just getting started on a supplement plan, here’s the top three nutrients I recommend:

1. Probiotics for Gut: The gut plays a role in your overall health and your dog’s, too. A balanced gut microbiome supports everything from digestion to immune function and even mental health. Probiotics are a great way to improve gut health for both you and your dog, reducing inflammation and boosting immunity.

Make sure to choose a probiotic that’s formulated for your dog’s digestive system as human probiotics are great for us, they’re not suitable for dogs.

2. Fortetropin for Muscle: One powerful supplement that’s gaining attention in veterinarian and sports medicine circles is Fortetropin, a natural bioactive compound derived from raw fertilized egg yolk. This ingredient is also beneficial for humans as research has also shown that Fortetropin increases muscle protein synthesis by 18% in aging adults, even without adding exercise to their routines. When it comes to pets, studies show Fortetropin is a game-changer as it promotes muscle health, speeds up recovery after surgery, and helps delay muscle aging. For older dogs or those recovering from an injury, Fortetropin can help them regain their strength and vitality quickly. To get the benefits of Fortetropin look for this studied ingredient in MYOS PET for dogs and cats, and MYOS MD for humans.

3. Collagen for Joint and Skin: Collagen is the protein that keeps joints flexible and skinglowing for humans but also provides the same benefits for dogs. Regardless of if you are a dog or a human, our bodies produce less collagen, the older we get, which can lead to joint stiffness, reduced mobility, and a duller appearance.

For dogs, collagen also supports the skin, reducing irritation and dryness, which is especially important for senior pets. For people, it strengthens skin elasticity, reduces wrinkles, and supports joint health, which is important as you age.

EXERCISE: TAKING IT UP A NOTCH

Exercise is the most accessible and simplest ingredient to living a longer, healthier life. Partnering with your dog as your fitness buddy not only helps both of you stay fit but also deepens your bond, and boosts your mood, so you can enjoy a healthier life. Walks are a great start, but they are not enough to really move the longevity needle. Here are some of my go-to exercises that can take your routine to the next level:

• Water activities like swimming and paddleboarding are perfect low-impact exercises that build muscle strength and support joint health, making them perfect for dogs of all ages, especially seniors or those with arthritis. Swimming is gentle on the joints, while paddleboarding challenges your balance and strengthens your core, all while offering stress-relieving and cardiovascular benefits.

• “Doga” is a unique twist on your standard yoga class that engages your dog. Incorporate it after a walk by taking a few minutes to stretch and relax with your dog. It improves flexibility and reduces stress for both of you. Plus, stretching together strengthens your bond and promotes relaxation.

• “Doggy Ninja Warrior,” as I’ve coined it, is a fun and engaging training workout. Simply set up an agility course at home using household objects like cones and cushions. Then guide your dog through the course. This type of exercise builds physical strength, coordination, and mental focus. The teamwork involved enhances your relationship while improving cognitive function for both you and your pet.

Engaging in these activities together will help keep you and your dog strong, active, and connected.

AGE IS JUST A NUMBER: BE PROACTIVE IN PREVENTING DECLINE

Aging isn’t something anyone likes to think about, but the good news is that you can do something about it. By focusing on exercise, nutrition, and mental stimulation, both you and your canine companion can stay strong and active well into your golden years. If your dog seems to be slowing down, don’t just assume it’s due to aging. Pain, arthritis, or muscle weakness could be the cause, but with the right exercise and nutrition, these issues can often be improved. By staying consistent with supplements and proactive with exercise routines, you can help your furry friend stay mobile, happy, and healthy.

MY NEW YORK STORY

I DISCOVERED MY HOME, MY COMMUNITY

Why New York? I get asked that question a lot. Some ask because of the city’s intimidating size. Others’ curiosity is sparked because I didn’t grow up here or have family nearby. And many ask because raising four kids in New York City isn’t exactly typical.

Growing up, I always imagined living here. New York has everything — world-class food, photography studios, museums, incredible shopping, and it’s walkable! Beyond that, its pulse, endless energy, and passion for life is what I’ve never felt anywhere else (and I’ve been to a lot of places). What surprises people, though, is that New York also offers something far less obvious: a real sense of community.

Despite its size, New York is made up of tightly woven neighborhoods. Each of these pockets create a kind of “village within the city” feel — a small-town experience in the middle of it all.

I moved to New York long before the pandemic. My first apartment was in Chelsea, then the West Village, and eventually, when I met my now-husband, we settled on the Upper East Side.

When the pandemic began, it crystalized for me that New York would be where I laid down roots. When others left, I stayed. We welcomed our first son. I saw neighbors looking out for each other. I’ll never forget how my building encouraged older neighbors to leave grocery lists outside their door so we could handle their shopping. Pretty soon it hit me; I wanted to commit to making New York my forever home. We laid down roots and bought a home.

I often say it, probably too often, but we hit the jackpot. Within weeks of moving in, our block association closed the street to plant flower boxes. Neighbors introduced themselves — to us, to our kids, even to our dog.

I also found that the neighborhood was filled with creatives: photographers, videographers, florists, and content creators of all types. As one myself, I found endless inspiration being surrounded by other creatives; they drove me to improve myself. My sense of identity beyond my roles as a wife and mother grew.

Little did I know what was to come. In mid-July, one of our neighbors warned us that the block takes Halloween VERY seriously. We started seeing signs right after Labor Day. A townhouse across the street began adding decorations every night – beginning with a spider web, quickly progressing to witches riding brooms below its windows. Businesses replaced their summer flowers with red and orange mums. A 12-foot skeleton appeared in front of another home. Not wanting to miss out, we decorated with pumpkins and skeletons. That first Halloween, we handed out 8,000 pieces of candy — and ran out before 6:30 p.m.

It was such a blast that we kept decorating. For the holidays that year, it was two nutcrackers playing music. It’s now turned into a year-round obsession. We added a flower arch above our front door. For Valentine’s Day, we covered our stoop in conversation hearts. We don’t let a season pass without a fun new floral design. I love the smiles it brings and how many people stop to take a photo or say thank you. It’s a small gesture that makes this big city feel more connected and has led to me meeting so many neighbors and feeling closer to the community.

I’ve thought a lot about what helps neighborhoods like ours hold onto that sense of community, especially in a transient place like New York. A big part of it is the businesses — some rooted in the neighborhood for generations yet fully in the now, with founders who use digital tools to stay connected and engaged, alongside newer spots adding to the neighborhood’s charm.

Two local staples that have shaped ours are Orwasher’s and Butterfield Market. Orwasher’s has been in the same storefront since 1916. Keith Cohen, owner and CEO, estimates they’ve made over 500 million loaves of bread. With lines out the door, they could easily move to a bigger location, but they don’t. I didn’t even think I liked scones until I started going there daily. Now, if they sell out of my favorite cinnamon scone before I arrive, I feel a pang of heartbreak.

Butterfield Market is a charming grocery. My kids love stopping at their walk-up ice cream window. Sure, it’s not the healthiest habit, but our nightly walks often end there anyway.

Butterfield Market has been part of the neighborhood since 1915 and is so uniquely integrated with the neighborhood. One of the partners, and CMO of Butterfield Market, Joelle Obsatz, grew up right upstairs. Joelle now gets to watch her children grow up there too! She puts it best, “It’s more than just a neighborhood — it’s families, friendships, and local businesses all supporting one another, generation after generation.”

But it’s not just about the old favorites. Newer businesses matter just as much. When I say I’m “grabbing a drink with the neighbors,” that could mean the family next door — or it could mean Alice McCarney and Deb Dedivanovic, the proprietors of AD Hair Studio, right across the street from my home. They’ve become part of our extended family. They even keep a fridge stocked with juice boxes and candy so our kids can stop by after school. They are long-time Upper East Siders but are relatively new to the block. They’ve had a salon for more than 20 years on the Upper East Side but only moved to the block two years ago.

Speaking of grabbing a drink, it often happens at the neighborhood’s newest addition, Nightly’s! Massimo Lusardi, the Founder/Owner of In Tune Hospitality opened Nightly’s last year but he’s been a neighborhood mainstay for more than 40 years. I love talking to Massimo since he has such a unique perspective. Massimo once told me, “It’s a true NYC neighborhood that hasn’t lost its sense of community regardless of the new development it’s seen in the past decade. It’s a lovely blend of pre-war buildings and modern high rises that share a common detail: they’re in an area that feels like home.!”

One of my favorite things to do is add my favorite neighborhood spots to a guide in Apple Maps and share it with my friends. That shared guide is my go-to when I think about where I’m heading out!

That’s what makes our neighborhood so special, it’s not just the beautiful brownstones or tree-lined streets. It’s the way people show up for each other, whether that means planting flowers, swapping ingredients, or sharing a stoop. It’s a mix of old-school traditions and new connections, all woven together by people who care.

So, “Why New York?” Because it’s where I found my people.

TIME OUT WITH…

In a world where buzzwords like “inclusion” and “impact” often get diluted, one organization is truly delivering on both—one bag of popcorn at a time. Nestled in Ridgefield, Connecticut, the Prospector Theater has spent the past decade offering more than just movies. It’s built a mission around employment with dignity for individuals with disabilities, called “Prospects.” And from that mission has emerged a remarkable offshoot: Prospector Popcorn, a gourmet snack brand now delighting customers across the country while championing inclusive employment.

FROM SILVER SCREEN TO SNACK SUPREME

Prospector Popcorn didn’t start as a business plan. It started as a lifeline.

“When the pandemic forced us to shut down the theater, we had to get creative,” Wenke recalled. “We needed to keep Prospects working and find a way to keep revenue coming in.” The solution? Take their most beloved concession item—gourmet popcorn—and turn it into a standalone enterprise.

The timing couldn’t have been better. As moviegoers stayed home, the world still craved comfort—and flavor. With bold options like Classic Caramel, Cheddar Caramel, and a fan-favorite Belgian Chocolate Toffee, Prospector Popcorn exploded in popularity. “The bags are flying off the shelves as quickly as we can stock them,” Wenke said. “We make all our popcorn with fresh ingredients, and package it right at the theater.”

But while the product is indulgent, the purpose behind it is even more fulfilling.

THE POWER OF “SPARKLE”

The Prospector Theater currently employs about 120 individuals, affectionately called “Prospects.” Seventy-five percent of them self-identify as having a disability. But at the Prospector, everyone wears the same black attire, works side-by-side, and shares equal footing—whether they’re in the box office or the boardroom.

“Inclusion isn’t just a mission statement here,” Wenke said. “It’s woven into our DNA.”

At the core of that inclusivity is a unique concept called “sparkle.” Each Prospect is encouraged to discover and share their unique passion, which is then translated into meaningful work.

“One guy told us, ‘I love inflating things,’” Wenke laughed. “So he ended up working in events and creating balloon bouquets.” Another enjoyed performance—so they found a role for him as an usher introducing films to audiences.

“It’s all about discovering that ‘sparkle’ and leveraging it,” Wenke explained. “Once you do that, people shine. It’s no longer about what someone can’t do. It’s about finding where they thrive.”

HOLLYWOOD ROOTS, HUMAN IMPACT

Wenke’s own journey into this world wasn’t traditional. With a background in theater, he had no prior experience running a nonprofit or a movie theater. But this changed when he met Valerie Jensen, Founder and Visionary of the Prospector.

“She had this idea that we could create meaningful jobs for people with disabilities by tapping into their talents,” he said. “Not having the ‘right’ background didn’t make me afraid of trying new things.”

Skeptics initially dismissed the project as unsustainable charity work. But under Jensen, President, and Wenke’s leadership as then Director of Operations since 2015 (now CEO), the Prospector has flourished as a fully operational, first-run theater competing in a crowded entertainment market—while keeping its mission front and center. “We’ve proven them wrong,” he said. “We have the best workforce on the planet. Our mission is different—but our quality is the same, if not better.”

GROWTH WITH HEART

Today, Prospector Popcorn isn’t just a pandemic pivot—it’s a thriving brand with its own identity. Its online storefront is booming, and discussions are already underway about scaling up operations and expanding into new markets. With every new bag sold, more jobs are created, more sparkles are discovered, and more perceptions are shifted.

But for Wenke, the greatest reward isn’t the rave reviews. It’s the transformation he sees every day—from confidence gained, to friendships formed, to lives uplifted by the power of purpose-driven work.

A MISSION YOU CAN TASTE

Whether you’re a foodie in search of your next favorite snack or someone passionate about supporting inclusive initiatives, Prospector Popcorn delivers on both fronts. And it all stems from one simple belief: that everyone deserves the chance to sparkle. And they’re making a difference, one kernel at a time.

THE FINAL WORD

WHAT IS A NEIGHBORHOOD

Throughout my life, I have lived by specific rules that have shaped over my life journey. One of them has always been, “If you take care of your neighborhood, your neighborhood will take care of you.” Remember, I am a third generation, Manhattan-born and bred. There aren’t many of us “natives” who stay here for their entire lives. I have. Sadly, most of my fellow New Yorkers have not believed in that aforementioned philosophy in some time.

Yes, there have been moments in the last 25 years that would contradict that such as 9/11, the blackout of 2003, SuperStorm Sandy and more. But those are fleeting moments in time that require comradery for survival, whether physical or emotional matter not.

What I am talking about are the everyday New Yorkers, like me, that know the people in their community. Those that walk around their neighborhood and know the people who work in stores, the managers, and dishwashers at restaurants, and that protect the vulnerable who need it from whatever evil is present, perceived or otherwise. In other words, those who take care of their neighborhood. Tragically, these people are few and far between.

NEIGHBORHOOD OF YESTERDAY

When I was a little boy, growing up on Central Park West in one of the most amazing buildings in the world, the El Dorado, the Upper West Side still had a neighborhood mentality. Granted, parts of it were extremely dangerous, but back in the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s, what wasn’t in this town? I remember my nanny, Henrietta Lumpkins, walking me down 91st street to Columbus Avenue. We would stop at D’Agostino’s (when the actual D’Agostino family still owned it) to pick up some essentials for the day, talking to the manager and cashiers who all knew us. Then we would go a block south to 90th and stop in Arthur’s, one of the last soda fountains in the city, to pick up pretzels and the like for my morning at the playground. We knew the owner’s daughter who at one point photographed my mother for a university project and her portfolio. She managed the mornings at Arthur’s. I would sit at the fountain talking to the nice lady behind the counter (I don’t remember her name sadly though I think it was Mary). Then we would go next door to Rappaport Pharmacy to see the older brother, Alan (no one liked the younger brother with the mustache), who always made a big deal of saying hi to us. And as we made our way down Columbus Avenue and weaved back to Central Park, we would see a myriad of neighborhood characters who we would always say hello to. Even when we went to the Loews movie theater on 84th and Broadway, we knew everyone who worked there, and they knew us.

Fast forward to my teen years. At night, I would still go down to D’Agostino’s and say hi, then head south to the corner of 89th & Columbus and stop into Winston’s Deli (Arthur’s was long gone) to talk to Ralph behind the counter, pick up whatever was needed and then head into Bella Luna (which is now on the corner of 88th and Columbus) for dinner and cocktails before heading out bar or club hopping. I knew everyone in our neighborhood. And they knew me. My point is that back then, no matter your upbringing or class, people still grew up believing in neighborhood sentiment.

FAITH RESTORED

I remember thinking recently that this mentality was all but gone. Since my health crisis in January, I have pretty much been home bound with only the ability to venture a couple of blocks. My next-door neighbors Jeff, Brooke, and their daughter (whose name I won’t publish for privacy reasons), are amazing. Same with Natella (who lives a few buildings over) who helped me at the ER that fateful January 13th. And the seniors in my building that I normally help to care for have just been incredible. Friends around Gramercy have asked Kylie how I am doing, as have the store owners and workers around my neighborhood. So, that has restored some of my faith in this mentality.

I do have to say special thanks to a dear friend in public relations who recently introduced me to a couple, via video chat, that really reminded me of why I have always believed in the “neighborhood” mentality. They also helped me remember why I have chosen to spend the last 48 (almost 49) years living in our great city. I think you’ll understand why when you read the My New York Story by Kristi Hemric piece a couple of pages before this column.

THE FINAL WORD
