Spring 2022 Professional Development Series April 19th - 21st, 2022

Greetings, During the spring recess, we will have an opportunity to meet, share, and learn through a series of workshops and roundtable discussions. The goal of the spring series is two-fold; First, site staff will have an opportunity to connect directly with department teams and external partners to explore a skill, share student-learning experiences, and discuss curriculum implementation strategies through a series of workshops. Secondly, the Spring PD series will offer a space for staff to share expertise, observations, and recommendations through moderated roundtable discussions. SCHEDULE The Spring Professional Development Series will be held on April 19th, 20th, and 21st with sessions offered between 10:30 am and 6:20 pm. Each day we will have a morning and evening block of sessions to accommodate all staff schedules. All staff are invited to participate in sessions throughout the day, but we ask that you remain within the number of hours you normally work per week. The morning sessions are: 10:00 am - 10:30 am 10:35 am - 11:35 am 11:40 am - 12:40 pm 12:50pm - 1:50pm

Wellness that Grows: Self -Care techniques for educators and the students they teach Spreading the Vibration of Yoga to Kids. Yogi Beans is a yoga experience committed to introducing young people to a healthy and lifelong activity that is noncompetitive, non-judgmental, physically challenging, and a ton of fun!

While caring for the needs of your students it's also essential that you take time to care for yourself. This workshop will focus on self-care techniques for educators including guided journaling prompts to help you identify where you can add more self care into your life. You will learn breathing techniques, movements, and meditations that can aid in relaxation and stress-relief for yourself as well as the students you teach. Mets on the Move - Program Orientation The Mets on the Move program orientation will provide an overview of program structure, tracking data, materials and incentives. The Mets on the Move Virtual Program is a fitness curriculum for kids to do in the comfort of their own home, testing their abilities, strengthening their bodies and staying motivated mentally and physically.

This session is intended and required for sites participating in this program. Spring 2022 Professional Development Series Tuesday, April 19th, 2022 AM Session Dancing Classrooms NYC & Empathy II This session will expand on the first “Dancing Classrooms NYC & Empathy” Professional Development sessions hosted in February 2022.

For over 26 years Dancing Classrooms has partnered with schools and community-based organizations to cultivate essential life skills in children through the joyful art and practice of social dance. To date we have served over 600,000 young people worldwide. Our vision is schools and communities where every child is connected, respected and given an environment in which to thrive.

The mission of Dancing Classrooms NYC (DCNYC) is to cultivate essential life skills in children through the joyful art and practice of social dance. With the vision to create schools and communities where every child is connected, respected and given an environment in which to thrive. Although students participating in the DCNY Core Residency learn El Merengue, Foxtrot, La Rumba, Tango, Swing, and Waltz — what they truly learn is teamwork, collaboration, confidence, respect, and elegance. With empathetic understanding being front of mind, attendees of this training will continue to get a taste of the 20 lesson, DCNYC Core Residency journey. Participants will not only get up on their feet and experience the joy of social dance, they will also be exposed to instructional/pedagogical tools implemented by DCNYC Teaching Artists that ensure students partake in a positive social-emotional learning experience. Change Impact is a social impact consultancy and minority- and woman-owned business (M/WBE). Since launching in April 2017, Change Impact has trained over 16,000 professionals, raised $140 million in multi-year grants for clients, and completed more than 70 strategic projects for partners ranging from start-up non-profits to school districts to intl mission-driven companies.

Identity is the cornerstone of our personality. Young people are evolving toward who they want to be and as youth professionals, you must be ready to support them in this journey. In this session, we will be discussing the many ways in which people can identify along the lines of gender and sexuality, best practices in affirming our youth on their journey, and challenging our own assumptions about LGBTQIA+ people. The NFHS, based in Indianapolis, Indiana, is the national leader and advocate for high school athletics as well as fine and performing arts programs. Within our 51 member state associations (including Washington, D.C.), we serve 19,500 high schools and more than 12 million young people.

The National Federation of State High School Associations has teamed up with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to educate coaches, officials, parents and students on the importance of proper concussion recognition and management in high school sports. This course highlights the impact of sports-related concussion on athletes, teaches how to recognize a suspected concussion, and provides protocols to manage a suspected concussion with steps to help players return to play safely after a concussion. Each state's requirements for concussion management are included as part of the course. A Spanish track is also available for this course.

Supporting Student Writers with Quill: A Grammar EdTech Resource Quill, a nonprofit organization, has adapted research-based writing instruction into a free, open source digital platform. All of our content is free to use for students and teachers, although we do have a premium model we sell to schools.

Quill helps students produce succinct, powerful sentences. We provide research-based writing practice through five learning tools. Using our powerful diagnostic tools, educators can quickly identify students' writing needs and assign differentiated writing practice based on diagnostic performance. Then, Quill's short, 10-15 minute independent practice activities provide instant, adaptive feedback to help students develop their sentence construction and grammar skills. BioBus helps K-12 and college students in New York City discover, explore, and pursue science. We focus on students excluded from the scientific community due to factors such as race, gender, economic status, and physical access.

We'll take a look at how energy, voice, and movement all play a role in your classroom presence. Positive Guidance

Diane Shirley-Wright is a NYS SAC Credential Instructor, Advisor and Endorser. She is the founder of DS Health and Safety Trainings, Inc, that specializes in offering a holistic approach to wellness through the mind, body, and heart. She is on a mission to supporting professionals in meeting their personal and professional goals.

Positive Guidance is essential for creating a safe and supportive environment. Positive guidance is about helping children learn self-control. Child Care workers can cultivate an environment where children are able to learn and practice appropriate and acceptable behaviors. In the interactive training, participants will reflect upon punishment vs discipline, discuss positive guidance techniques and strategies to help children modify their own behavior. ExpandED Schools is a nonprofit dedicated to its mission of closing the learning gap by increasing access to enriched education experiences.

Want to liven up your STEM Program? Bring some biology into the picture! Join staff from the New York Hall of Science has they walk educators through how to capture prey like an ogre-faced spider. This course highlights the impact of sports-related concussion on athletes, teaches how to recognize a suspected concussion, and provides protocols to manage a suspected concussion with steps to help players return to play safely after a concussion. Each state's requirements for concussion management are included as part of the course. A Spanish track is also available for this course.

We will work collectively to build a program that focuses on the Meta World, board games, and console gaming. Tennis 101 with USTA Eastern

The USTA Eastern Section, based in White Plains, N.Y., is a not-for-profit community service organization whose mission is to promote and develop the growth of tennis.

This session will provide attendees with the knowledge, skills & activities to successfully implement tennis programming at their site. It will take place in person and is intended to be hands on. Attendees should come dressed appropriately in athletic gear and sneakers. Lunch will be provided. This session is intended and required for sites participating in this program. Van Gogh Museum Education Program- Amsterdamvv

The Van Gogh Museum (VGM) is internationally known as one of the most prominent art museums in the world. Its reputation is due to its unique collection as well as the in-house expertise about Vincent van Gogh and the art of his time.

In this introduction into the Van Gogh Education we will provide all the tools and methods to conduct the Van Gogh Museum Program across New York Edge locations. We encourage staff from all disciplines to take part in this inspiring workshop! The lesson program centers around a high-quality replica masterpiece that will be brought into the classroom and will form the central starting point for the exploration of the life and work of Vincent van Gogh. The curriculum consists of 5 interactive, playful classes about Vincent van Gogh, and his materials, techniques and use of color. First and foremost the children will also create their own works based on their learnings. The program goes beyond facts and figures about this famous painter: it also brings to the forefront topics such as being different and overcoming adversity, and in the process teaches children important 21st century skills such as critical thinking and problem solving. ExpandED Schools is a nonprofit dedicated to its mission of closing the learning gap by increasing access to enriched education experiences.

STEM Educators Academy is a professional learning and technical assistance program for afterschool providers across New York City. Join program staff from ExpandED Schools to explore how programs across the city build capacity for their STEM programs by creating collaborative teaching teams and incorporating youth feedback into their program design. You’ll leave with tools you can use to assess your current programs strengths and to identify ways to build out new elements into your site’s approach to STEM. By identifying some of the barriers we will determine what kinds of goals can be set to improve communication and what resources can be used to fill in the gap. Creating Physically Safe Environments is essential for young people to learn. Child Care workers can create a safe physical environment by focusing on their guidelines and practices. During the training, participants will review local and state regulations, reflect upon their child care program’s systems and create strategies to ensure that the program is physically safe to meet children’s needs. 5:20pm - 6:20pm Roundtable Discussions Summer Training Roundtable Talks "How can you get in the mix?" This session aims to identify the talent we have at our sites and develop ways to empower them to step up and facilitate training workshops. Our discussion will be around what training our Site Staff would like to facilitate. We will discuss ideas for new training, ways to improve previously offered training and what skill sets the roundtable participants have that can support NYE in getting ready for Summer 2022. This course highlights the impact of sports-related concussion on athletes, teaches how to recognize a suspected concussion, and provides protocols to manage a suspected concussion with steps to help players return to play safely after a concussion.
