Art Show rolls out big prizes

The 40th Woodend Lions Art Show opens at St Ambrose Hall on Friday, March 6 with a gala evening that offers guests the first glimpse of the artwork and a chance to take home an original painting, photograph, sculpture or alternative 3D piece of art.

Tickets are available at $25 including drinks and canapés. Winners of prizes totalling more than $3750 will be announced on opening night.

This year’s show marks a new partnership between Lions and Macedon Ranges Art Trail aimed at rejuvenating the event and raising funds for community projects as well as providing an arena for artists to sell their work and Had a clear out? Love a bargain?

we will close up shop at about 2pm (depending on through traffic). You can keep your garage sale going longer or close up then too. Don’t forget there will be quite a few households on the map and you will want to let everyone have a go at getting around you all.

This is one of the Woodend Neighbourhood House’s main fundraising events for the year and we are so excited that it can be one of your main fundraisers too. These funds will help us keep on running the courses, activities, projects and events that you love us for and we all get to recycle and repurpose things along the way. Last year other garage sale participants reported that they had a flood of visitors and made money to help them with their own personal funding targets too.

Program Launch & Concert A stunning and exciting program of events, speakers, concerts and exhibitions which will make the 2015 Woodend Winter Arts Festival one of the most vibrant yet, will be launched with a special concert on 28 March.

The launch concert features Romanza Andaluza - two remarkable virtuosos who will take the audience on a vivid and seductive round-the-world journey; from the highlands of Appalachia to Rio’s backstreets and from the villages of Bulgaria to the elegance of Paris.

The international flavour is reflected in the 2015 program, which embraces foreign affairs, foreign correspondents and the best of international and Australian music and literary talent – some of them famous, some of them soon to be.

Romanza Andaluza comprises London-born Elizabeth Layton international violin soloist, chamber musician, and leader of the BBC Scottish Symphony and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and ARIA-nominated guitarist Alex Tsiboulski. Australian born Alex has an international reputation as a stunningly talented classical guitarist, winning prizes in both the Havana and Tokyo International Guitar Competitions. Together, they combine their passion for the music and mastery of their instruments in a duo of rare intuitive collaboration.

New date for Tylden Fair Saturday 14th March It’s on again! Keep the 14th March free and come and join in all the fun of this wonderful community event. Always a great day out for the family, this year’s carnival is set to celebrate our children, our families and our community.

Come along and bring the kids for all the excitement of the fair!

The RIDES! So many we can’t list them all here – but highlights include the Music Trip, the ever popular Giant Fibreglass Slide and the 20 Seater Chair-o-plane!

This year will once again see the return of the incredible wood chop display and other regulars including the animal farm, spinning wheel, silent auction, book stall, cake stall and cupcake decorating, mini golf, hair spray and stands for local CFA, Ambulance, St Johns and the SES. Have your face painted, buy some plants, grab some great food and score a bargain at the trash & treasure. PLUS all the food, music and carnival stalls you’ll love.

We’ll also be running our stage show “Woodend’s Got Talent”, a talent competition for 5-18 year olds that’s been a huge success in previous years and really gets the crowd moving. Registration forms are available at the St Ambrose School office.

This year’s carnival line-up is looking fantastic and I’d like to encourage everyone in Woodend and the broader community to attend and have a great day!

The Tylden Primary School Fair has moved to the 21st of March.The fair this year will boast an array of new activities with a distinct country flavour.

The tractor pull competition has now dropped off the program due to the change of date, but will be replaced by wood chopping, a tug of war and sheep dog trials.

Also back this year are the very popular camel rides, trackless train, bungee trampolines, jumping castle, inflatable mega olympic obstacle course, mini golf, hay toss and much more.

The stalls including locally grown produce, (including much from the school’s own Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program), trash and treasure, secondhand books, plants, and a great range of silent auction goods will also be there on the day.

If you feel like munching a hamburger while watching the wood chopping, or enjoying a Devonshire Tea while watching the kids play mini golf, then come along on Saturday 21 March between 10 and 3pm to Tylden Primary School, 11 Clowes Street, Tylden for a fun day out.

Seeking Descendants of Woodend WW1 Servicemen and Women In 1918 the community of Woodend, deeply affected by the loss of local servicemen and women in WW1, planted 162 oak trees along what became known as the Avenue of Honour.

This was later extended to 185 trees with copper nameplates attached however only 70 of these have been located and are displayed at the Woodend RSL. In 2013 the RSL, with the assistance of the Woodend and District Heritage Society and Macedon Ranges Shire Council revived the idea of a monument at the southern end of the Avenue.

The memorial will consist of a black granite Wall of Remembrance, 2.4m high and 4.5m wide with an inscription explaining the history and the list of names.

Local sculptors, Embrace Art, have donated a 3m high granite sculpture to complement the Wall.

Red Cross Calling is the one time of year when local Red Cross members, community groups, schools and individuals can all work together to raise money for Red Cross through local fundraising events.

Get involved throughout March by conducting a collection or organising a fundraising activity, a doorknock of your local area or a coin collection in a shopping centre, at an intersection or in the CBD can be easy to organise.

The Red Cross Calling team can help you obtain permission and provide you with all the equipment and materials you need. Fundraising activities can be as simple as a cake stall, morning tea or sausage sizzle, so get everyone together and put some 'fun' into fundraising!

Approvals have been obtained and funding received from the Federal Government, the State Government and Macedon Ranges Shire Council.

Woodend Landcare are helping with the site clearance and Woodend Rotary will restore the golf club fence that defines the site. Works will commence in a few weeks and we expect that the memorial will be opened on the 97th anniversary in September.

We are endeavouring to contact more of the families of those remembered by the trees as we would like these descendants to take part in the opening ceremony. Contact details, including the list of names assigned to trees, are available on www.woodendavenueofhonour.org.

Thanks to people power, Woodend Primary School (WPS) has switched to solar energy. The completed ‘Here Comes the Sun’ project will benefit the school for decades.

‘WPS now has the second-largest solar panel array for a Victorian school, and the largest for a public school,’ said WPS Principal, Andy Kozak.

‘Here Comes the Sun was led and mostly funded by our wonderful community. We thought it would take us three years, but we completed it in just 14 months!’

The final solar panels were installed on the school's roofs this month, bringing the total to 140 panels. The Australianmade panels generate up to 35kW of clean energy, or most of the school's daytime needs.

The school celebrated this achievement with a special assembly on 16 February, at which the many sponsors of Stage 2 of the project were thanked publicly.

The project cost $72,000. $38,000 came from local fundraising activities and dozens of community sponsors.

Major sponsors were Woodend Rotary Club, Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group and Trentham and Districts Community Branch of Bendigo Bank. A Sustainability Victoria grant provided $16,000 and WPS invested $18,000.

‘The savings on power bills will return the school’s investment in under 2 years and will be used to enhance the school's facilities and resources for decades to come,’ Mr Kozak explained.

‘In addition to the financial benefit, by reducing greenhouse emissions, Woodend Primary School is fighting climate change for the future wellbeing of our students and the rest of us.’ The installer of the solar panels was BREAZE (Ballarat Renewable Energy and Zero Emissions), a non-profit organisation.

‘Woodend Primary's goal is zero power bills and zero net greenhouse emissions. Our focus now is energy efficiency,’ Mr Kozak said. ‘We'll start by replacing inefficient lights and heaters and we’ll achieve our goal faster with ongoing community support. Dedication ceremony

Heritage Walk 2015 On Sunday March 22 Woodend & District Heritage Society will host the official dedication of another six plaques and trees on Woodend’s Heritage Walk. This annual ceremony honors and records the stories of people who live or have lived and worked in this district from its earliest days.

The six latest plaques are in memory and appreciation of • Dr. Ted Liefman • Ivan and Marie Londish • Ken and Pat Murphy • Rev Dr WF Paton and Mrs Mi Paton and family • Jack & Joan Walters and William & Florence Comeadow • Woodend Playgroup The Dedication Ceremony begins at 1.30 pm on Heritage Walk, adjacent to the Five Mile Creek, between the Swimming Pool and the Visitor Information Centre (approx.). The Kyneton Municipal Band will provide a musical interlude before and after the Ceremony.

The Ceremony will be followed by afternoon tea at Woodend Tennis Club, and a display of photographs relating to each plaque will be set up for viewing in the Old Woodend Court House (home of the W&DHS).

Families, Friends and members of the Community are warmly invited to attend.

On Friday March 6 at St Andrew’s Uniting Church, Woodend the annual World Day of Prayer service will be held commencing at 7.30 pm, followed by supper.

This year the focus is on the Bahamas; a beautiful holiday destination comprising 700 islands.

The community of this tropical holiday destination is struggling with the issues of family violence and child abuse.

Social Services Minister for the Bahamas, Melanie Griffin has identified domestic violence as the precursor for many other crimes committed in the Bahamas.

We in Australia are also grappling with the same issues and trying to understand the origins of family violence in our communities.

We also are trying to address the terrible trauma and loss of life as a consequence of violence in the home.

Come and join your hearts and voices with the WDP committee of the Bahamas in a colourful and poignant time of reflection .

We celebrate the touch of Jesus who brings courage, strength and healing through his love.

The company raises $1 million in cash through borrowing and pays it to Jill. Jack retains control of the company as part of the settlement.

Jill is deemed to have received a dividend of $1 million and tax is payable at marginal rates. Franking credits may be attached at the discretion of the director.

Had the settlement been by way of transferring property to Jill this would still represent a dividend to Jill. There would also be Capital Gains Tax (CGT) consequences.

This is one of the many financial issues to consider during a divorce. Be sure you get appropriate advice when considering any settlement.

Your community radio station 100.7 Highlands FM ventured across to Cricket Willows, Hepburn Springs on Australia Day to take part in the Central Highlands T/20 Cricket Grand finals.

This was an historic day for the station, broadcasting the Division two Grand final between Carngham and Avoca, followed by the exciting Division one clash between Gisborne and Campbells Creek.

The support from all four clubs was outstanding and showcased the great camaraderie between sporting clubs and the media. Despite not having access to the signal of the station off air, they did have access to our online streaming (highlandsfm.org.au), both Carngham and Avoca provided special guest commentators to join Highlands FM presenter Chris Yeend to provide detailed and entertaining analysis of the big game. Carngham won the match convincingly in a game that provided plenty of big hits, great catches and wickets.

The Division one clash had Gisborne Dragons president Andrew Headberry who provided his services for the match while scorekeepers from both clubs provided details on bowling and batting figures through-out the day. Like the final against Riddell, Gisborne held the trophy aloft at the end of the day against Campbells Creek to be crowned the Central Highlands Division One champions and advance to the next stage that will take place early next year.

The day was a big success for the station, thanks to technical director Geoff Murray who set up speakers to enable the commentary to be heard on the ground and through-out the crowd. Highlands FM provided the equipment for post match ceremonies of both games for supporters to hear at the ground and via radio.

This was outstanding exposure for the station, made possible by all four participating clubs, the outstanding team at Cricket Willows, GDCA secretary Rob McIntyre and Campbell Waring from the Central Highlands Cricket Association. Without the support of these members, the day would not have been as successful.

Highlands FM enjoyed a super year in 2014, broadcasting the 2014 Macedon Ranges Relay for Life, more than 40 matches in the RDFNL including 18 finals, the 2014 Kyneton Cup, Woodend Children’s Park Halloween event among many others. This is an exciting time to be part of the station, either in the community or in the studio.

National Youth Science Forum

A Rotary Club initive The Rotary National Youth Science Forum (Nerd camp) was honestly two of the best weeks of my life.

The forum took place in January at the Australian National University in Canberra involving around 200 Year 11 students from around Australia, a handful of overseas students and 20 ‘staffies’. The ‘staffies’ are students from the past few years who volunteer their time to act as mentors and leaders, making it a camp run by youth, for youth.

They say that the people you meet on NYSF become friends for life because you get to spend two weeks living with like-minded and outgoing people who have a passion for science. My experience was no different and I now have a wonderful network of science-loving friends from Australia and overseas.

I was a member of Florey, a group with a focus on biomedical research. With this group we visited a number of different research centres and laboratories including the John Curtin Medical Research Centre and a pathology laboratory where we analysed biopsy samples, including a bowel and a section of a lung, and located cancer growths and tumours.

We also went to the AIS where we saw the latest high performance analysis equipment, as well as drug testing laboratories and the altitude athlete housing. We were even able to learn some of practical skills such as defibrillating a patient and putting on plaster casts in a real ambulance.

A highlight was a video conference held between Questacon in Canberra and the headquarters of CERN in Switzerland which gave us the opportunity to meet some very esteemed scientists and discuss a range of scientific topics including the operation of the Large Hadron Collider.

Upgrade for local reservoir

Western Water this month begins the second stage of an upgrade of the Orde Hill Reservoir in Mt Macedon.

Orde Hill Reservoir is a feeder storage for the Graham Brock Reservoir, which supplies drinking water to Woodend.

The $550,000 project will involve improving the vehicle access roads to ensure staff and contractors have better access for routine safety inspections and maintenance work.

Surface drains are also being improved to reduce soil erosion during heavy rain that can cause runoff into Willimingongon Creek.

Residents may temporarily notice some extra traffic and noise related to the upgrade, but Western Water will minimise this wherever possible.

The Orde Hill Reservoir, which can store up to 250 million litres of drinking water, is a closed catchment with no public access allowed.

Trespassing in a closed catchment can compromise the safety of our drinking water, and lead to prosecution and heavy fines.

Trappers make an impact

With simple wire traps our members have trapped more than 1700 Indian mynas in the last 12 months. MRIMAG’s goal is the reduction and control of numbers of this invasive pest species and we are thrilled with these results.

But the icing on the cake is feedback on the return of native birdlife. Jenny Zimmerman, a trapper in Woodend, said “I had a flock of a dozen Indian mynas which pretty much ruled my garden. In my first month of trapping I very easily caught 13 mynas, and that pretty much cleared my garden of them. Last spring a pair started checking out nextdoor’s eaves for a possible nesting site: I moved the trap closer and caught three birds. Since then, no mynas to speak of.

“What I have noticed – and this has been quite dramatic and exciting – is a marked increase in the smaller native birds in my garden: two species of thornbills; silvereyes; smaller honeyeaters such as yellow-faced and white-eared; blue wrens; a pair of grey fantails and red-browed firetails.

These birds did occur before, but their frequency and numbers have increased. That gives me all the reason I need to persist with my trapping.”

The winning colour purple

New Leaves has won Woodend’s inaugural Paint the Town Purple competition, organised to promote the 2015 Lancefield/Macedon Ranges Relay For Life.

Judge, Donn Gray, was impressed by the book store’s thoughtful window display with its handmade bunting, purple books and flowers. A donation box in store was also considered a great gesture.

The business, which was taken over by new owners Woody and Kristi High and relocated to the corner of Anslow and High streets last year, was one of several along the town’s main shopping strip that took up an invitation by the Relay For Life committee to promote this year’s fundraiser for the Cancer Council Victoria*.

Incorporating the Relay For Life message of hope, the participants created attractive promotions and organisers have acknowledged their efforts by awarding a free quarter page advertisement in the New Woodend Star to New Leaves and presenting certificates. (see below) Other businesses who participated included Color Me Cooper, Warner’s Jewellers, Woodend Newsagency, Black Forest Meats, Pabulous Cafe and Bourkie’s Bakehouse.

Similar competitions were held in Lancefield and Romsey and it is hoped the promotion will get stronger each year.

2015 Workshop launch Following its successful public forums in 2014, PS My Family Matters is launching a series of more informal workshops for 2015.

‘The purpose of these workshops will be to enable carers to talk to specific service providers, in a more relaxed, informal manner’ said President, Tamara Wilson, recently honored for community service in the Australia Day awards ‘We have found that carers of those with a mental health issue value the opportunity to meet with people like themselves and to talk about their experiences. Having a specifc service provider in that gathering will allow people to get relevant information, ask questions and share experience with others.’

The workshops series will start on 11th March when Carers Victoria will talk to the group about their role in the community and the Carers Recognition Act and take questions. The workshop will run from 10am-noon. Call 0475 269 965 for more details and to register your interest.

Further workshops will run every two months for the rest of the year and the calendar for these will be published on the website at www.psmfm.org.au and in local media.

This will be an opportunity for carers to come along, have a coffee and just chat.’ Coffee for Carers will run on the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 10am at Café LaCibo in Gisborne. The next ones will be 17th March and 21st April.

a messaage from the Mayor In February, Woodendians were again busy organizing important events.

These included the official opening of the refurbished Woodend Tennis Courts, the launch of Woodend Primary School's Solar Panel installation and the Macedon Ranges Sustainable Living Festival.

I love that we are so committed to healthy living, involving people in local events and reducing our environmental footprint on this part of the planet.

Although I have been limited in my mobility due to a recent foot operation, I have been trying to attend as many events as possible.You may have noticed my current mode of transport: my knee scooter: Thanks to Dr Peter Ferguson for recommending it.

March 2015 Physiotherapy changes Brooke Street Medical Centre has had physiotherapists as tenants since its inception and has worked with a range of providers over the years under this model.

For some time we have been keen to better integrate the role of physiotherapy within the wider teamwork model championed by Brooke Street Medical Centre. We have therefore taken the step of employing a physiotherapist for the first time.

Scouts Big Day Out

On Sunday, 15th February, Over 40 Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, Leaders and Parents from 2nd Woodend Scout Group, joined 13,000 other scouting members and friends in Melbourne for Big Day Scout.

The day started with a treasure hunt around the lane ways of Melbourne. Specially created Street Art with a Scout theme formed the clues. Everyone started at Federation Square with Clue 1 sent to their team's smart phone and off they headed to explore the lane ways of the City and find the artwork. Photo evidence was taken and submitted. Once accepted, the next clue was revealed on the phone! Melbourne was awash with Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers joining in the race! 2nd Woodend Venturers were first in with all correct answers to the clues and each won back packs plus a portable stereo system for their unit.

Next stop, the Myer Music Bowl for the Investiture of Victoria's New Chief Scout, actor Shane Jacobsen and entertainment from Sarah de Bono, Rob Mills and other Australian performers.

Major equine centre explored

Macedon Ranges Shire Council is inviting community comment on the findings of a feasibility study into establishing a regional equine centre in the shire capable of hosting world-class events.

The study scopes the possibility of establishing a centre that will attract and host a range of competitions, events and other equine activities. It has been informed by broad consultation with the equine industry, including state and national stakeholders, the Macedon Ranges Equine Industry Network (REIN), business owners, as well as local horseriding clubs which are located in the major towns across the shire: Woodend, Lancefield, Kyneton, Gisborne, Riddells Creek and Bullengarook.

Woodend Pony Club has participated in the study by responding to a questionnaire. The Club has been in operation since 1963 and has a full membership base of 56 riders with approximately 100 parents and friends that support these riders.

The study has looked at a range of facilities options including indoor and outdoor arenas, stabling, yards, exhibition, entertainment and conference facilities. It has also considered other possible uses such as dog and agricultural shows and exhibitions.

Celebrating women in emergency services

Women in the Macedon Ranges Shire who work or volunteer for emergency services will be celebrated as part of an International Women’s Day afternoon tea to be held in Bendigo on Sunday 8 March.

The afternoon tea, which will focus on the theme for this year, ‘Staying Safe—Making it Happen’, is being organised by the CFA and SES in partnership with Macedon Ranges Shire Council, City of Greater Bendigo, and Mount Alexander Shire Council.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council Mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson is calling for everyone to get involved and help recognise the important role that women play in keeping our communities safe.

“This is a great opportunity to support our local women and the great work they do across the many local emergency services in our region,” she said.

Special guests will include the Minister for Emergency Services, Hon. Jane Garrett; Emergency Services Commissioner, Craig Lapsley and Barfold resident, Professor Elaine Murphy – a serving CFA volunteer and Black Saturday survivor.

“Women play a huge and often unrecognised role in responding to emergencies, and an even greater role in education and post-disaster recovery,” said John Parker, Assistant Chief Officer, SES North West Region.

“We want to recognise and celebrate this, and encourage women to consider emergency services as a vocation or volunteering alternative,” he said.

CFA Assistant Chief Officer and Chair of the Violence Prevention Advisory Group, Mike Wassing, understands the importance of gender equality in emergency services.

“There is a well-documented link between gender equality, violence prevention and community safety.

“Family violence has no boundaries and affects women from all walks of life. If we remain silent, we condone this violence. Emergency Services have a shared responsibility for emergency response, but we also have a shared responsibility to help create safer communities, particularly for women and girls,’ he said.

The celebrations will begin at 2pm at Lake Weeroona Pavilion, Weeroona Ave, Bendigo.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council will be providing a free bus service to transport people to and from the event. The club was contacted by organisers with a weeks notice but showing a great ‘can-do attitude’ enthusiastically took up the challenge to support the prominent event.

Several Rotarians and partners arrived early to set up the Rotary marquee and commenced preparations for 150 bacon and egg sandwiches. Rotary Assistant Governor David Bourke also joined in to help the event and soak up the atmosphere.

The weather was lovely ensuring everyone in attendance including the riders could enjoy the event, although the uphill riding did look challenging.

The crowd in attendance appreciated the efforts of the Rotarians with many including Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas commenting that the bacon and egg sandwiches were the best.

Riders took off at 10.30 am and after a loop around the Macedon area came past the starting point again, to the delight of the crowd, and then continued to Bendigo for the end of the first stage. The race continued around Victoria ending on Sunday 8th February at Arthurs Seat.

Many local racing fans will remember with disappointment, the Australia Day Picnic Races of 2011. Kangaroos invaded the course at Hanging Rock leading to the cancellation of the iconic race day, due to very real safety concerns. News stories showing the kangaroos hopping down the home straight flashed around the world, from North America to Europe.

A solution needed to be found to protect the kangaroos, whilst still allowing for the historic races to be conducted in a safe and orderly manner. Woodend Pony Club to the rescue. For the last two years, members from the club have attended the race days to assist as volunteer riders or “roo shooers”.

Early morning on a race day, after Hanging Rock rangers have opened gates and swept through the course, the girls from the Pony Club walk their mounts through the central course area to clear any remaining kangaroos out to the east paddock. The kangaroo mob once contained in the large outer reserve area is then monitored and herded if necessary by the Pony Club riders. It’s a long day, with the girls working in shifts until the last race has finished.

This Australia Day seven girls from the Club (along with their parents) were on hand to volunteer their services as “roo shooers”. It is an invaluable service for a much loved local event and a pretty amazing experience for any young person to list on their resume. The Woodend Pony Club currently has approximately 50 members, ranging in age from 6 to 23 and meets at the Woodend Race Course Reserve in Forest Street. The erection of signs and information within the Yelka Park area in Carlsruhe is nearing completion.

Information boards will contain information on the traditional owners of the area and how they lived with and from the country. This will occur within the next couple of months. A plaque is also being made for the grave of William Jones who was buried in 1847.

There is still a small amount of money available to do work within the Carlsruhe area. Road and footpath upgrades

Woodend and Carlsruhe Trucks and rollers have been out in full force on the shire’s roads, including a number of roads in and around Woodend and Carlsruhe.

New bitumen and gravel has been laid over sections of sealed and unsealed roads to ensure the safe passage of motorists, and some sections of road and footpath have been reconstructed.

In Woodend, sections of Anslow Street and Morris Road have been resealed, and 90 metres of new footpath has been constructed along Owen Street. Council will also shortly start the reconstruction of a 300m length of Ashbourne Road between Booths Lane and Donalds Road.

In Carlsruhe, sections of Carlsruhe-Central Road, Cheveley Road, Garth Road, Three Chain Road have been resealed.Council wishes to thank residents for their support and understanding during these construction and renewal projects.

The Woodend Unit of Red Cross had its first meeting for 2015 on the 5th February. In the preceding couple of months, Red Cross has been active supporting communities affected by bushfire in both Victoria and South Australia, where some of the worst bushfires since Ash Wednesday in 1983 were experienced. Locally, our emergency service volunteers from Woodend supported fire fighters at the Metcalfe fires on multiple occasions, providing food and sustenance, opened and ran a relief and registration centre for those affected by fires on the northern outskirts of Kyneton.

Red Cross Calling Local members of Red Cross will be out and about in March for Red Cross Calling to raise funds to enable Australian Red Cross to continue its work supporting people affected by emergencies and hardship. Anything you can donate is welcome.

Other ways you can help Australian Red Cross – Donate blood. One donation can save three lives. Make an appointment at the Sunbury Donor Centre at the Sunbury Memorial Hall, or find an alternative donor centre, by calling 13 14 95.

Experience the mystery and magic of Hanging Rock at night by camping out at the Rock on Saturday 21 March.

The Rock will be open for one night only to a limited number of campers who want to have a Hanging Rock experience like never before.

Mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson said, “Come along and enjoy an evening in the great outdoors; join in a guided night walk exploring the reserve’s flora and fauna, or simply relax with friends and family in beautiful surrounds.

“On a night walk last year I was lucky enough to spot a Boobook owl and it was such as amazing experience to be under the stars, looking for native animals,” she said.

The local SES will be providing a sausage sizzle on the night, and bacon and eggs for breakfast on Sunday morning for a small fee.

Camps can set up from 4pm on Saturday 21 March, and must be packed up by 11am on Sunday 22 March.

Campers are welcome to arrive earlier and stay later, but camps must be set up and packed up during the designated times.

“Camping is not usually permitted at the Rock, so this is a great opportunity to be one of the few that can say they have spent the night at this magical location,” Cr Anderson said.

Bookings are essential, with a limited number of places available on a first in, first served basis. Book online at mrsc. vic.gov.au/CampOut or contact Council’s Recreation team on (03) 5421 1468.

Camping fees are $21 per adult, $12.50 per child and $54 per family. School and organised groups are also welcome to attend. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Hanging Rock by moonlight

A Fresh Start Thanks to all of the volunteers that came along to our February Working Bee, which focused mainly on the outside area.

New mulch, kindly donated by RT Edgar Macedon Ranges, was spread around the play equipment and the sandpit was refilled.

Our outdoor toys received a wash down, bikes were serviced and trees were pruned ready for a big year. The inside play area also received a good tidy up.

There are plenty of activities and events coming up as Woodend Playgroup confirms its 2015 calendar.

The highlight of the year will be a trivia night to be held on Saturday 1 August. Other dates include: March 28 – Cake Stall May 29 – Quarterly Drinks for Playgroup families June 5 – Woodend Winter Arts Festival Soup Stall We look forward to seeing you at these events during the year, and if you’re part of the Woodend Playgroup community, maybe you might like to volunteer your time to help out.

What’s on at Buffalo Sports Stadium

It has been a busy start to 2015 at Buffalo Sports Stadium, as all of our programs re-commence. We have been excited to unveil the impeccable court floor which has been fully refurbished over summer. The $14,000 works included a complete sand back and line marking resulting in a fantastic playing surface.

Our team leader, Christina Kennedy, has returned from maternity leave. Christina is available at Buffalo Sports Stadium on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Call in if you have any queries, or contact Christina at ckennedy@mrsc.vic.gov.au.

We still have vacancies for another two teams for our Monday morning netball competition and players are needed for our round robin mixed volleyball competition.

Term 1 programs We have a range of programs available for preschool children.

Tiny Tackers Dance, Kindergym and Mini Maestros music classes are taking enrolments for Term 1, 2015. For older children we offer several sports programs including basketball, netball and indoor soccer. Circus classes, Studio 2 dance and Hip Hop classes are also available.

Fitness classes are available including the ‘family friendly’ Metafit classes with Libby, Zumba classes with Imogen and for our mature-age members we offer both Strength for Health and Heart Moves classes. Adult sports include volleyball, basketball, netball and indoor soccer.

Basketball development – best of both worlds!

We are very fortunate in Woodend that we are able to offer our young basketballers amazing development opportunities in both the country and metro arenas.

In January, three Woodend girls played in state teams at the Southern Cross Challenge in Bendigo. We also have four Macedon Ranges rep teams competing at Basketball Victoria Country’s tournaments in 2015.

Congratulations to our Under 18 boys team (pictured) who have qualified to play in the Division 1 and 2 competition. Many thanks to the coaches, parents and managers who are making these great opportunities possible.

On top of these country opportunities, juniors can play for Woodend Hawks in the Sunbury basketball competition.

This offers a higher level of competition and the chance to try out for Sunbury Jets rep teams that play across Melbourne. In 2015, we have more than 100 Woodend Hawks players with almost 20 in high level, Sunbury Jets teams.

Play basketball this winter Our local summer competitions are finishing soon and the winter season will be played across Terms 2 and 3.

The importance of clear, accurate directions When calling ‘000’ to register a fire or incident alert for the CFA, SES, police or ambulance, it is extremely important that you give very clear directions as to the location. If you are making a CFA fire call, here is the sort of information the operator will ask for: Where is your emergency? What is the location?

When we get clear and precise directions, it means that we are able to go directly to the actual scene as quickly as possible. However, if directions are vague, we have to spend many valuable minutes actually searching … and you would be amazed how sometimes they can be hundreds of metres, or even kilometres, away from the actual scene.

Nominate the number, street and area of the property, a nearby landmark, nearest crossroads … anything that will direct an appliance faster to the scene. Preferably, please stay at the scene so that you can direct vehicles to the exact location.

What is the type of incident? Building fire, home fire, bush fire, etc..

How many people are involved? Are there people in the house or car? Is other assistance required? Ambulance or police? What’s your name, address and telephone number?

Contact details in case we need to follow-up with you later.

This is also important, as the CFA incident controller may wish to call you to get more specific directions if they were not initially clear, or talk to you about what you actually saw.

If the incident has already been reported, we will advise you and may not need as many details.

If you are deaf or have a speech or hearing impairment – call 106.

The 106 Text Emergency Relay Service is provided as part of the National Relay Service and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Suspicious Behavior If you witness suspicious behaviour ring Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Bushfire arson can have a devastating impact on the community and the environment. So, be observant in your local area. Can you identify a person, or vehicle, you observed where a bushfire occurred, or do you know of someone who has been lighting fires? If so, you can confidentially call Crime Stoppers or file an online ‘information report’ via the Crime Stoppers Website.

Stereographs

Some of you may have been fortunate enough to view the exhibition of Victorian stereographs held at the Bendigo Art Gallery some time ago. The Bendigo Art Gallery has most generously donated copies to the various historical societies of those that are of particular interest to their area.

Our seven stereographs are now framed and are available for viewing at the Woodend & District Heritage Society Centre at the Old Courthouse in Forest St Woodend on Wednesdays 10am-12:30pm, 1:30-4:30pm. The photos date from 1861 and give a fascinating glimpse of the past.

When viewed stereoscopically the two images are combined in the brain to produce 3-D depth perception. The invention of the Brewster Stereoscope by the Scottish scientist Sir David Brewster in 1849 provided a template for all later stereoscopes At the World's Fair in London in 1851, Queen Victoria was so impressed by the stereoscopes on display that her enthusiasm for three-dimensional photography soon made it a popular form of entertainment world-wide.

This stimulated the mass production of stereo photography which peaked around the turn of the century. It lost popularity as movies became more common.
