In honour of New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services’ 150th anniversary, 10 vintage fire trucks will be featured in this year’s Royal City Show and Shine, which returns on Sunday—July 10. “When we have had one or two trucks in the past, there was a lot of interest. We think the number of trucks this year will be a big draw,” said the event’s chair Bill Shannon of the Downtown BIA. The fire department is celebrating its anniversary in July, which works well with the timing of the show and shine, said Shannon. NWFRS is B.C.’s oldest established fire service and will celebrate its official birthday on July 24. All trucks featured in the event have been refurbished and are from Metro Vancouver. The trucks were built anywhere from 1920 to 1963, with vehicles such as a 1920 American LaFrance, a 1946 Ford pumper and a 1963 Hub. In addition to the fire trucks, there will be an estimated 350 cars on display at the show and shine, which takes place on Columbia Street the entire length of the Downtown. Shannon said the cars range from early 20th century models to new energy efficient cars. “We have cars that are from yesterday, today and tomorrow.” Shannon, a retired university professor and owner of the Scholar’s Quay Antique Mall, has been involved with the show and shine and the Downtown New Westminster BIA for 12 years. He says the BIA, which puts on the event, is focusing more on the car show than on other entertainment. “We have withdrawn from bringing in new items and are going with the best of the car show, so we are paring it down a little bit.” Changes in staff of

the BIA from late 2010 to March 2011 caused delays in planning, which usually starts in September or October, said Shannon. The Canada Post strike also caused problems, since exhibitors couldn’t receive their registration packages in the mail. Instead, Shannon says the BIA has contacted registrants by email and phone, and is confident there will be a good turnout of exhibitors. In terms of visitors to the show and shine, which is New Westminster’s largest single-day event of the year, Shannon anticipates about 100,000 will show up for the event, which also includes live entertainment and, on the Saturday, the annual poker run.
