Travis is co-owner of Vancouver Circus School, based at River Market. Having grown up in the world of circus and trampoline, he has never known a life without either. Travis started competitive trampoline at age 6, and went on to win the Western Canadian title a few times over. Following a near-fatal car accident, Travis and his father Aaron decided to develop the Vancouver Circus School. The school is an active contributor to the community, donating classes to fundraisers, and performing in events such as the Pier Park opening, Hyack Festival, Sapperton Day, etc. Travis is currently in Thailand with a group of instructors volunteering their time to build an acrobatic and hip-hop school for orphaned and at-risk youth.

Mark is co-founder of Take Root, the development company leading the revitalization of River Market in New Westminster. Passionately curious about people and places, he started out as a Disney Imagineer and indulged a childhood dream to be a Disney character. He has a bachelor degree in Civil Engineering and a master of science in Engineering Management from Stanford University. He serves on the board of the Vancouver Contemporary Art Gallery and the New Westminster Economic Development Advisory Committee. At the River Market his company set out to create a new model for public market with a vision dubbed Food 360. The market is a finalist in the Real Estate Foundation of BC Land Awards.
Patrick is an environmental scientist by profession, an environmentalist by conscience, and a volunteer by nature. He is past president of the New Westminster Environmental Partners, vice president of the BC Environmental Managers Association, a board member of the Royal City Curling Club, and serves on several civic committees in New West. He can often be found rabble-rousing on topics of local interest, from the future of the Pattullo Bridge to solid waste management in the city. Through his blog “New Westminster –in my back yard”, and a social media presence under the tag “NWimby,” he is rarely without an opinion on local, regional or global politics. He is also a terrible gardener, but trying really hard to improve.

Paul is the owner and CEO for Techno Monkey Media Inc, a media production company which he founded in 2003. He is active in his community, currently serving on the board of directors for the Downtown New Westminster Business Improvement Association, the board of executives for the BC Professional Videographers Association, and the board of directors for The Animal Show on Shaw TV, helping move pets from animal shelters into homes. Paul has produced thousands of hours of video content, and is a YouTube partner with his videos exceeding 3.8 million views. He has devoted many hours to organizing and directing independent film projects over the years.
Farhan is head coach of the Hyacks football team at NWSS, and was responsible for re-launching the football program at the school. He has been coaching BC high school football for more than 20 years, and this season that just finished was his 10th as a head coach. This past April, he was named Provincial Scholastic Coach of the Year at the BC Lions Orange Helmet Awards. Following the 2004 season he was named runner up for the NFL/CFL National High School Coach of the Year. He is currently employed as a national reporter for TSN and CTV, which often has him covering the Canucks and Lions. Lalji, his wife Mary and son Lukas live in New Westminster.

Peter is president and senior systems analyst at Artefactual Systems, an open-source software service provider that is spearheading the development of systems that manage the digital collections of hundreds of archives and libraries worldwide. He has served as a director of the McBride-Sapperton Residents’ Association since 2005 and volunteers with the Royal City Youth Soccer Club and the New Westminster Montessori Society. For his leadership in the open-source movement Peter has been recognized with a distinguished alumni award from UBC. Thirteen employees work out of Artefactual’s office in the historic Hart Block building on Columbia Street. He believes in New West and so does his staff—one just bought a condo on Carnarvon Street.

Peter is general manager of the River’s Reach pub, where he’s been for 10 years helping it to be recognized as one of B.C.’s top 20 pubs. He’s worked his way up in restaurants, hotels, bars and pubs, in kitchens and out front, for a time working in Banff/Lake Louise with Fairmont Hotels. He is a cancer survivor, diagnosed in 2009 with kidney cancer. He also runs a consulting company, Peter Saran Inc., which helps troubled bars turn their fortunes around. He’s actively involved in the community, helping fund the Salvation Army’s cold weather shelter, Christmas dinner, and clothes and toys. Other groups supported include Monarch Place, United Way, , Hyack football and Salmonbellies lacrosse. /riversreach
Jonina wears many hats—parent, school teacher, New West school trustee, and outdoor play advocate—but her message is the same: a great city is one that constantly strengthens the capacity of its youth. As founder of Growing Up Urban (GUU) and the popular summer games night, GUU Nights, Jonina promotes opportunities for outdoor play, natural playscapes and healthy child development. As a trustee, Jonina champions the benefits of students walking, cycling and taking transit to school. Her initiatives to promote safe and active travel have led to the school district developing a School Travel Planning Policy that will be one of the first school travel policies in B.C. /joninacampbell

Paul opened Heritage Grill on Columbia Street seven years ago, seeing potential for a live music venue in an area poorly served. His goal is to bring all genres of music and people together, and create a hub central to Metro Vancouver. Paul hosts everything from burlesque shows and drag shows to slam poetry and philosopher cafés. He launched a scholarship program for NWSS jazz band, and donates to the food bank, Camp Mumba (helping kids under age 16 affected by HIV/AIDS), the RCH foundation. Every year, the Grill hosts a free Christmas turkey dinner for the community. Paul says the changes in Downtown New West are incredible. It’s about time, he says, and it’s great for the city, and the arts and culture community. Change is good as New West is thriving with local talent.
Born and raised in New Westminster, Sandon is currently the Youth Services Coordinator for the City of New Westminster. He programmed this summer’s outdoor movies series and is part of several city initiatives including the Westminster Pier Park project. Outside of work, Sandon was one of the founders and chair of New West KidSport— an organization committed to raising funds for kids in New Westminster to participate in organized sports. He believes in “tomorrow’s future” and is also closely involved with Easter Seals 24 Hour Relay which sends hundreds of kids with disabilities from around B.C. to summer camp each year.

Ruby is volunteer coordinator with City of New Westminster parks, culture and recreation where she engages volunteers to build community capacity. Before joining the city, her fundraising company managed the New Westminster Youth Centre fundraising campaign, raising $230,000, assisted with the $16.6m infrastructure grant for Westminster Pier Park, prepared the federal and provincial funding grants to host the City’s Olympic Torch event, managed Fraser River Discovery Centre’s fundraising program, and provided fundraising and event management consultation services to numerous other organizations. She developed the inaugural BC Lung Association’s Climb the Wall for Clean Air at the Wall Centre Hotel, and currently serves on the board of the New West Chamber of Commerce.

Mark Brand is the guest speaker at the NextUP cocktail soirée on Saturday, Nov. 10 at Inn at the Quay, and has been a trailblazer in Vancouver’s Gastown. Brand, whose NextUP appearance is presented by Salient, has been in the restaurant business 25 years, starting at 12 in an East Vancouver pizza shop. He opened Boneta in 2007, and followed that with The Diamond, Sea Monster Sushi and, recently, Save-On-Meats. The latter resurrected a butcher shop that had been an institution on Hastings Street for more than 50 years before closing in 2008. His efforts were the subject of a documentary series on Oprah’s OWN network. He’s also branched out into clothing, with Sharks & Monsters, and art, with the Catalog Gallery. Brand is a firm believer in the social responsibility of his businesses, nourishing his community as well as the needs and desires of his customers. Stacy is executive director of Community Volunteer Connections, the volunteer centre for New West and the TriCities. The group puts on the annual New Westminster Festival of Volunteers, which brings together 45 local organizations and connects them to new volunteers. Stacy has a Masters in Counselling from SFU, and worked as a suicide intervention counsellor before moving into non-profit management. She is currently Vice President of Volunteer BC. Outside of her career, Stacy has been an animal shelter volunteer and board director for the Royal City Humane Society, and now as a board director for NewWest.TV, pursuing the dream of starting community access television here in New Westminster.

Catherine Ouellet-Martin
Andrew is owner of Wild Rice restaurant at the River Market. For years, he dreamed of creating a modern Chinese restaurant serving locally sourced food. His farm-totable philosophy was passed down from his grandmother. His first Wild Rice restaurant opened ten years ago in Vancouver’s Chinatown, which was followed by a proliferation of new eateries in the area. Now in New West he’s breaking new ground again, and finally has his dream location on the water. He is a charter member of both the Ocean Wise and Green Table Society. As an advocate for B.C. he has developed a wine and beer list that focuses on our province.
Catherine is executive director of the Fraser River Discovery Centre, where they have aims to expand exhibits into the second floor next year. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and a Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Public History from SFU in addition to having done archaeology and anthropology field studies in Europe. Catherine’s past experiences include work in historic sites, museums and archaeological sites along the shores of the Mighty Fraser.

Jonathan is in his third term on New West City Council. He serves as chair of the parks and recreation, bicycle and pedestrian, and master transportation plan committees. Outside council, Jonathan is a grad student in the Urban Studies program at SFU, his studies focusing on transportation and housing. His commitment to building a sustainable urban environment extends to his personal life as well. His family lives in Downtown New West, where walking and public transportation are their main forms of getting around.

Tej is executive director of Tourism New Westminster. She was born and raised here and has been a May Queen, Miss New Westminster deputy ambassador and student council president. She spearheaded the creation of NEXT New West, a networking group of young professionals, and is the founder of the Herman Dhillon Memorial Foundation, an organization that raises money and awards a bursary to athletes at NWSS. She loves to plan parties and raise money at the same time, such as the recent Haunted Halloween bash which supported KidSport New West. Her recent 30th birthday raised $3,000 for the RCH Foundation. She believes in New West’s resurgence so much she recently purchased a condo in the Trapp + Holbrook development on Columbia Street.

Melissa’s passion for putting together outside-the-box parties led to the creation of her company Pretty Up Parties. A passionate foodie Melissa celebrates New West’s growing vegan culture on her blog thehungrytaurus. com. The many events she has organized locally include a Vegan Culinary Bike Tour, a Sinfully Divine Dessert Night Pop Up Restaurant, a Vegan Wine & Uncheese Event, a Seed Swap and Garden Planning Workshop, a Vegan Pop Up Picnic, “Un”cooking Kids Culinary Classes at River Market, and a lunch hour dance event at River Market called Lunch Beat. Ray was born and raised in the Royal City, graduating from NWSS in 1987. He played Jr. A and Sr. A Lacrosse for the Salmonbellies and as part of his commitment to giving back to the community, he is currently the assistant general manager of the Jr. A team. He spent over a decade in Downtown Vancouver as a stock trader and broker, before returning to New Westminster to begin Cloud 9, a confectionary manufacturer and wholesale company. After rebranding Cloud 9 in 2011 and creating Cloud 9 gluten-free flour, he opened the first gluten-free bakery in New Westminster on Royal Avenue. Along with looking after a growing business and coaching, Ray and his wife Carin are raising two children in the neighbourhood where he grew up.

Kendra is executive director of the Downtown New Westminster BIA, launched the Multicultural Festival almost a decade ago, and this year led the re-launch and rebranding of that festival and the Royal City Show & Shine. In the past she worked at the Royal City Star Riverboat Casino as marketing and HR coordinator, then manager of food & beverage operations, and was part of the start-up team at Starlight Casino when it opened in 2007. As the face of the BIA, she has recently enjoyed working with others on projects such as the opening of Westminster Pier Park and the Downtown Mosaic Tile Project. She serves on the executive of Community Volunteer Connections and Tourism New Westminster.

Michael’s owns Redbrick, a funky home furnishings shop on Sixth Street. He is a designer from the east coast who previously owned three home stores that had been featured in the pages of numerous publications including Canadian House and Home and Style At Home. Passionate not only for his new retail location at Sixth and Carnarvon, Michael is involved in his new community, serving as vice president for the Downtown BIA as well as other committees and community based organizations to help further the revitalization of his beloved new hometown.
Blair is communications manager for the City of New Westminster. With two decades of experience in strategic communications and public relations, he has worked on Parliament Hill, and in Victoria as a senior advisor to a cabinet minister. In 1998, he launched a communications consultancy serving private and non-profit clients. In 2008, he was hired as the City of New Westminster’s first communications manager. He has since led the city’s re-branding efforts, guided the development of a new corporate website and recently spearheaded a social media push that has seen the city engage a new generation of citizens. He is also a founding member of NEXT New West.
