Alleged robber nabbed

The tale of The Unexploded Boer Local man’s book about his years as a young man has become a smash hit in South Africa

New Westminster police arrested a man last Friday (Jan. 27) following a bank robbery who is believed to have been responsible for two other bank robberies in Burnaby and Àve in Edmonton. Police said they were called to the Bank of Montreal on 10th Street at 1:51 p.m. where staff said a man had produced a note, threatened to have a gun and demanded cash. Shortly afterward, they found a man matching the description and the money. Police have recommended charges against Eldon Peters and his custody was transferred to Burnaby RCMP, which has taken control of the investigation.

To get out of prison he acted crazy so he could be sent to a psychiatric hospital. That scared him even more than jail, so he escaped. “I pleaded insanity and then made a break from the nut house.” Rautenbach spent years hopping from country to country, living in places like London, Paris and Afghanistan. “There was no adventure. I was a refugee even though I didn’t know it. I found every possible way to survive. I was very adept at stealing food while pretending to be a tourist.”

Downtown parkade safe from wrecking ball for a while City tells BIA it won’t be coming down this year or next Grant Granger ggranger@newwestnewsleader.com

Although its long-term survival may be in doubt, New Westminster’s Front Street parkade isn’t going away any time soon. Despite fears of local merchants, fueled by a vision released by the city in September that called for removal of the western half of the parkade to make way for an overpass to access the waterfront at the foot of Sixth Street, it’s a long way from being demolished. “The parkade is not coming down tomorrow, it’s not coming down in 2012, it’s not coming down in 2013. It’s not coming down until a long-term strategy for parking Downtown is developed,” city engineer Jim Lowrie told a town hall meeting organized by the Downtown Business Improvement Association on Tuesday. Lowrie said the city is looking at six months to develop the strategy and then the rest of the year to do public consultation. “Implementation, of course, will take a lot longer than that,” said Lowrie. He told the gathering the city would be willing to put together some more information on the issue for discussion at another meeting in about a month. “We’re doing the studies and at the end of the day we’re going to have a better space. [Demolition] certainly isn’t imminent,” said Mayor Wayne Wright. But that doesn’t mean everything is loveydovey between the city and the merchants. While

Lowrie said the city is working toward making the Downtown more conducive to pedestrians, cyclists and transit users, the merchants insist they need somewhere for their customers to park. Urban Gypsy owner Jason McGill complained there are only seven parking stalls near his Columbia Street store and they’re often full. He said he sells six-foot dining room tables and they can’t be taken away by customers on SkyTrain or by bicycle. BIA representative Dan O’Hearn told the audience of about 40 that even though there are new projects currently being built Downtown, there will be few additional spots that could potentially replace those at the parkade. He said the new civic centre parking will only serve the facility and the of¿ce workers in the Àoors above it. He pointed out other projects are actually getting a break from the city on their required parking. Lowrie noted a survey showed the parkade is only used about 40 per cent of the time, and there is lots of parking sitting empty at the new Plaza 88 complex. O’Hearn said the uncertainty of the parkade’s future is inhibiting the signing of long-term leases by merchants in the area. The BIA suggested the parkade could be marketed better by selling monthly SkyTrain commuter parking, offering lower rates, or even by having free ¿rst-hour parking for merchant customers. In response to the park-and-ride suggestion, Lowrie said SkyTrain commuters have had 25 years to park there and haven’t. He suggested the Braid or Sapperton stations would be more appropriate. ADRIAN RAESIDE:

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

Photo opportunity As followers of local media already know, Surrey-Fleetwood MLA Jagrup Brar spent last month walking in someone else’s shoes. Meeting the challenge raised by the Raise The Rates group, he has tried to subsist on the $610 monthly welfare rate. And, as many have pointed out, the shoes he was wearing were not his: he had the luxury of being able to walk away from them; he isn’t poor, or unemployed; and he knew throughout his ordeal that he would, in the end, return to his family, with the certainty of ¿nding a roof over his head and knowing where his next meal is coming from. But, at the very least, Brar has had a taste, ¿rsthand, of what it’s like to be poor and marginalized in our society. That’s more than can be said of many politicians from all levels, whose idea of getting their hands dirty is donning a hardhat and rolling up their sleeves for a photo op and a few well-scripted platitudes, before rolling off to lunch – leaving actual policy in the hands of bureaucrats. If the NDP MLA’s journey was a self-serving publicity stunt, it is clearly one that cost him a little more in physical discomfort than many politicians have risked over the course of numerous terms in of¿ce. And Brar’s exercise in poverty has, at the very least, got people discussing an issue too often side-stepped by the more squeamish among us, it has reached at least some level of inarguable value. The MLA claims his experience has made him a changed man. We can hope that change becomes manifest in more activism on behalf of the poor in his own riding and beyond. We can hope he motivates other leaders to provide policy alternatives to address the vicious cycle of poverty. Unless there is meaningful follow-up by people of conscience, Brar’s experience – no matter how earnest and well-intended – will end up being considered just another photo-op. And that would be a shame. —Black Press

A changing slice of the city In one of life’s ironies, about two months after I moved to New Westminster I was offered my big chance at the editor’s chair at a little newspaper in Tsawwassen. Every morning the 40-minute (give or take) drive felt like going on a business trip, leaving an urban, gritty city and travelling through farmland before eventually arriving in a little beach town that resembled California’s Carmel. It was so different. Even the weather often shifted from cloud and grey to stark sunshine by the time I rolled into work. (A friend said that’s how Tsawwassen got its name: the ¿rst natives arrived from the usual West Coast gloom to ¿nd that suddenly “Twas-a-sun!”) It’s a curious part of the world, and to me it seems carved off from the Lower Mainland somehow. I attended business association meetings in Ladner, where farmers and accountants rubbed elbows as they ate their Classic Double Egger at Ricky’s All Day Grill and exchanged good-hearted jokes. In South Delta as a whole, violent crime is so rare that for a

time people were worked up in Tsawwassen by some teenagers who got in the habit of kicking down fences. It’s a place where you can travel to Arthur Drive—the main drag linking the two towns of Ladner and Tsawwassen—pass former Premier Bill Vander Zalm’s sprawling estate, then pass another farm property where someone is hunting birds in season. It’s also a place where in the early days of the year, it’s possible to observe snowy owls perched on the logs on the shores of Boundary Bay, an exquisite and moving sight. It’s home to birds galore, part of the Paci¿c Flyway, as is the George C. Reifel Bird Sanctuary on Westham Island, home to a million birds of all shapes and sizes. Just down the road from Reifel,

I went out one warm summer night to watch the weekly game of barn hockey, played on the upper level of a giant barn, where someone had been wise enough to nail down some sheets of plywood years earlier. They say South Delta changed in a big way when the tunnel was punched through in 1959, followed soon thereafter by the ferry terminal. Deltaport came in 1970, and expanded recently. The South Fraser Perimeter Road will also have a great impact on that little part of the world. And now. The Tsawwassen First Nation is located in the dead centre of South Delta, on about 724 hectares of land, mostly along Highway 17. Fresh off the signing of a treaty in 2007, this group is about to transform its land from rough and rural, with a handful of homes along the ocean into a sprawling mini-metropolis. Plans include a 135-hectare industrial park, up to 4,000 units of housing, and the second largest shopping mall in B.C., second only to Metropolis at Metrotown.

It could, as many South Delta residents have long feared, change the face of their beloved little corner of the world forever. Many fought hard to prevent it from happening. And it put many in a strange position, particularly those who are supportive of the desire of the Tsawwassen First Nation— and all First Nations peoples — to have their fair share of the bounty that Canada provides. For more than a century, most Canadians have bene¿ted and pro¿ted from the amazing bounty this country provides, except First Nations peoples. Now the Tsawwassen peoples will have their turn. There was a time when my wife and I thought about moving to South Delta. It’s a special part of the world. For the sake of those who live there, and the rest of us who love to visit, that charm remains.

EMAIL letters@newwestnewsleader.com

Time to deal with Uptown troublemaker I am writing this letter as a concerned citizen about a very annoying and aggressive public nuisance who hangs around the area of Sixth Avenue and Sixth Street in Uptown New Westminster. This person has been harassing people in this area for a long time, and today has been causing disruption to folks in both the malls, pushing people around, shouldering them, shouting his head off and intimidating others. He hangs around the Tim Hortons overnight and bothers people there as well. Meanwhile even though this restaurant has a number of police of¿cers on site throughout the night, even when they see the pest annoying others, they just sit there paralysed and do nothing. I often used to have a late-night coffee there but have had to stop because of the problems. The rest of us who are minding our own business shouldn’t have to put up with this foolishness. I know the name of this character and the police are well

aware of his identity and familiar with his antics. I have lived in New West for a few years and have never seen anything like this and I may have to move because of it. Why is there so much apathy in our police force and politicians? Our once-pleasant city has deteriorated into a cesspool of lunacy and insanity all because the politicians at city hall have allowed it, and no one has the spine to do anything about it. Whether the mayor or the police like it or not, someone is going to have to stand up to this problem and ¿nd a way to deal with it. I hope that someone at city hall is capable and intelligent enough to take the concerns of this senior citizen seriously. Get your head out of the sand, Mayor Wright. There are major social problems in this city. Stop pretending our city is happyland, because it isn’t. Ian Robertson New Westminster

Evergreen Line Rapid Transit Project Construction Begins with Power Supply Upgrade The installation of new underground BC Hydro power lines will be one of the first in a series of construction activities to take place along the Evergreen Line route to prepare for construction of the tunnel and guideway. Concrete duct bank casings will be installed in an excavated trench and BC Hydro will run power lines through these ducts. The power supply lines are required for construction and for the operation of the Evergreen Line. This work will begin in the coming weeks at the following locations: Port Moody • Along Spring Street, St. Johns Street, Douglas Street and Electronic Avenue. Coquitlam • At the intersection of Lougheed Highway and Barnet Highway. • Along Como Lake Avenue from North Road to Dogwood Street. Construction Bulletins and Traffic Alerts can be found on the Evergreen Line Rapid Transit Project’s website at www.evergreenline.gov.bc.ca.

Peter Julian is championing the cause for Leif Erikson Day in Canada. The Burnaby-New Westminster MP reintroduced a private member’s bill in the House of Commons on Tuesday that would create an annual day in honour of the explorer on Oct. 9 Erikson was the ¿rst European to visit North America more than 1,000 years ago. Julian ¿rst introduced the concept of Leif Erikson Day in 2006. “[Erikson] represents an enduring legacy of brave explorers who continue to enrich Canada’s culture and way of life. This bill has been

receiving tremendous support from the Canadian Scandinavian community,” said Julian in a press release. “Leif Erikson is part of our heritage that de¿nes us as a nation. Understanding our history and the people around the world who shaped it is an important part of reÀecting on the great privilege and responsibility we all share as Canadians. It’s time the federal government recognizes the signi¿cance of Leif Erikson and the very ¿ne contribution of Canadians of Scandinavian descent to our society and country,” Julian said.

Julian wants Canada to honour Erikson

The Buddhist Compassionate Relief Tzu Chi Foundation has donated $30,000 to the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation’s (RCHF) multipurpose interventional suite campaign. The suite, currently under construction, will provide cardiac and stroke care. RCHF has pledged to raise $2.8 million toward new imaging equipment and has so far raised just over $2.2 million.

On Sunday, the Tzu Chi Foundation held a Chinese New Year festival at Royal Columbian which included Chinese music and a lion dance to usher in the Year of the Dragon. “We are grateful to have the opportunity to be a help to children, seniors and those whose lives have met with unexpected tragedies,” said Annie Chen of the Buddhist Foundation. “This interactivity with the RCH community is as important to us as our donation.”

“I had a writing block that would make Leonard Cohen jealous,” says Rautenbach. “I couldn’t do it before because I always ended up in a dark, black place. It took me a while to realize I was homesick. One day I sat down and it just didn’t stop.” His perspective—that of a young, rebellious white male—had been left out of discussions of those times. They were overshadowed, rightfully so, by the blacks who changed the country, says Rautenbach. But it was also an emotional time for the young whites. Since publishing the book, Rautenbach has heard from South African men his age all over the world. Many were drafted and served while others left the country. “They all seem to be carrying something inside of them. It wasn’t their fault what was going on, everyone was trying to ignore it. The whole thing was hushed up. A lot tried to do the right thing even though they had no guidance and they were left in the lurch. Even the black kids, they’ve been forgotten, and they started the revolution.” IN SEARCH OF CANADIAN PUBLISHER

In the fall of 2010, Rautenbach was diagnosed with a severe form of leukemia that required more than ¿ve months of chemotherapy. This past October, cancer free, Rautenbach returned to his old haunts and old friends. “There’s nothing like going back and ¿nding out the people I knew 36 years ago hold me in high regard,” he says. “It’s a strange connection. It’s home. I’ve been in all these other places and I thought I was above that. But home is home. You think it’s totally gone from your life until you step into it again.” Ideally, he’d like to ¿nd a way to live in both countries. “I’m always going to have family here. I don’t want to desert the family.” The South African book market is small, so Rautenbach would like to ¿nd a Canadian publisher, although it is available through book websites like Amazon and Chapters. He also believes his story would make a good movie, although the pram pushing likely wouldn’t make the script. “It has all the ingredients for a ¿lm—bad girls, rock and roll, prison.”

When: January 30 to May 11, 2012 Time: 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Trees are a significant cause of power interruptions. Contact between trees and power lines can also create a severe danger. Over the next few months we will be pruning and removing trees in the V5A and V5G Postal Code area of Burnaby. Postal Code V5A Boundaries: North to South: Burrard Inlet to Burnaby lake East to West: Cliff Ave. to North Road North to South: Burke St. to Highway 1 East to West: Boundary Road to Sperling Ave. Trees are pruned using the best arboriculture (tree care) practices. Skilled workers employed by BC Hydro are trained in both electrical safety and tree care. Only correct and proper techniques are used to eliminate any safety hazards. For more information about our current work or other vegetation management practices, please call Mike Chadwick, your area coordinator of Vegetation Maintenance, at 604 528 0952.

Postal Code V5G Boundaries:

Move over Scott and Rob Niedermayer; British Columbia may soon have another brother act on ice. But don’t put hockey helmets on Austin and Justin Ma. In fact, it was their enmity for hard headgear that steered them to take up ¿gure skating when they headed to the rink in search of a new activity to complement their soccer season. “I wanted to try skating, but I didn’t like helmets,” says Austin, 13. With their younger sister Amanda already swooping and twirling around the ice at Burnaby 8-Rinks, they followed in her salchow. Soon enough they were spending up to three hours on the ice six days a week, learning new moves, practising new jumps, pushing each other. Their commitment to the sport extends off the ice as well with ballet training, endurance and stretching regimes, all supervised by a personal trainer. It makes for a busy schedule, balancing school and skating, especially now that they have to travel to Sungod arena in Delta to work with coach Kevin Bursey after eight years at 8-Rinks. But it’s better than having them hang around the shopping mall, says their father, Martin. “They have to work hard.” That’s not dif¿cult to do when each other’s motivation sits in the same back seat of the same car, sleeps under the same roof and eats at the same dinner table.

Only a year apart in age, Austin and Justin compete against each other regularly. They’re both currently prenovice and they’re preparing for the biggest meet of their young careers, the BC Winter Games in Vernon on Feb. 23-26. “It’s kind of a mini-Olympics,” says Justin, 14, of the competition that gathers young athletes from around the province to compete in 18 sports. In fact, some Canadian Olympians like gold-medal snowboarder Maelle Ricker started their climb to national and international athletic achievement at the BC Winter Games, a fact not lost on the brothers, who harbour their own Olympic aspirations. Though that day is still a long way off, the debate as to who would win gold and who would ¿nish the next step down on the podium is ongoing. “Justin always beat me early on,” says Austin, smiling. “But now I’m winning. I guess he works harder, but I have more talent.” “I’m a fast learner,” adds Justin, stealing a glance at his younger brother. Even if they never reach Olympic glory, Martin says his boys are still learning valuable lessons through skating. “They’re overcoming fears,” says Martin, who will be accompanying Justin and Austin to Vernon to serve as a chaperone for the ¿gure skating contingent. “They’re training not to be quitters, they’re training to be ¿ghters.”

Five robbery suspects were arrested after a Burnaby business was robbed late Sunday. Around 11 p.m. Jan. 26, a male suspect entered a business on North Road in Burnaby and demanded money from the lone employee. After grabbing an undisclosed amount of cash, he and four associates were arrested outside, say Coquitlam RCMP. “We had the area surrounded and arrested the robber as soon as he was outside of the business. We also arrested four of his associates in the area,” said Cpl. Albert Lam of Coquitlam RCMP in a press release. “The arrest of these ¿ve individuals was well coordinated. As a result, no one was hurt and we took everyone involved into custody without incident.” Coquitlam RCMP is working with RCMP detachments in Burnaby, Richmond and Ridge Meadows, and New Westminster police to investigate the incident. “The collaborative effort has allowed of¿cers in different jurisdictions to work together as a team. We share our intelligence multilaterally and we plan our operations jointly,” said Lam. “Good solid police work as a team has brought about the successful arrests.” Jack Sharhan, 19, of Vancouver faces one count of robbery related to the North Road incident. Reza Ayoubi, 20, and Mohammad Human MohammadAshraf, 20, both of Coquitlam have been charged with one count each of robbery related to the robbery of a different business on Austin Avenue on Jan. 24. Two other male suspects were released on a promise to appear pending further investigation.

New homeowners say views and location tops on their list

Finding a home at Tsawwassen Springs For Francis Cheung and his wife, finding a home that allowed them to just close the door behind them when they wanted to travel was extremely important. They found that perfect home at Tsawwassen Springs, by Shato Holdings and Talisman Homes. “It’s so close to the border and the ferries,” Cheung says. “We could just walk to the ferries.” He was immediately impressed by the quality of the workmanship on the homes, and says he looks forward to seeing the community when it is all complete. However, it wasn’t just the construction that he was looking for. “We’re right in the middle of the golf course,” he says. “The view was one of the most important things to us.”

Homeowner Dale Martin was looking to downsize after living in Tsawwassen and Ladner for 20 years, and found the entire community to be exactly what he wanted. “Once I saw the whole concept, I knew it was going to be a real community,” he says, adding that he also liked the idea of living on a golf course. “It’s very well designed,” Martin says. “There is no wasted space.” He was also impressed with the lengths Shato and Talisman were willing to go to ensure he was completely satisfied. “The whole experience was great,” he says. “They really bent over backwards to make sure (everything was okay) ... (Tradespeople) came in and fixed any defects, no questions asked.”

‘Langley is literally right over the hill’

Head into the great outdoors with Latis by Colin Oswin

Get up and get outside with Latis. A condo project from developer Kerkhoff Construction, Latis is located right in the heart of Cloverdale. The project will have just 34 units in total, which Craig Anderson, marketing manager at Pilothouse Real Estate, describes as “a very limited, very intimate selection of homes.” Latis places a big emphasis on providing outdoor space for its residents, with big balconies included with most units. The balconies here range from 90 up to 183 square feet, and one second-floor unit comes with a huge, 412-square-foot terrace. One unit on the top floor has a smaller 51-square-foot balcony, but Latis makes up for this, adding a 553-square-foot rooftop deck. And this suite isn’t alone – five of the top-floor units at Latis include these rooftop decks. Anderson says these types of rooftop spaces are extremely rare in Cloverdale. “We took an existing building structure and had fun with it,” he says. “We already had a roof and a flat building area, so it didn’t add a lot of cost.” The decks on the roof are all fenced off, and they also come equipped with electrical outlets and gas lines for entertainment and barbeques. And at four storeys, Latis will rise above the two- and three-storey buildings that dominate the neighbourhood, providing excellent views in all directions. “You have to invite your friends to come see it,” Anderson says. “Your place is where everyone is going to go in the summer.” In addition to the balconies, decks and ground-floor patios, individual gardens will be available for all units in the grounds surrounding the building, so even if you don’t purchase a unit with a rooftop patio, you’ll still have some outdoor space you can use to grow whatever you want. Latis features one- and two-bedroom suites, with one three-bedroom suite on the ground floor. All come with dens as well. And with 17 different layouts, buyers will find a lot of variety at Latis. In the kitchen, you’ll find a stainlesssteel appliance package, highlighted by a big, 24-inch-wide refrigerator and a classy Venmar designer hood fan over the stove. Under-cabinet puck lighting keeps the space nice and bright, and a two-basin undermount sink adds

carpeting, contemporary baseboards and a window trim package to highlight the big and bright windows. The development includes underground parking for cars as well as a storage space for bicycles. Anderson says he pushed hard for the inclusion of the community bike rack because the amenities in Cloverdale are so close by. You can pedal your way around the neighbourhood on errands and grocery runs or even to school at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. “I’m amazed at how close things are,”

he says. “Langley is literally right over the hill.” A major retail and commercial redevelopment underway at the site of the old Cloverdale Mall means buyers at Latis will arrive early in an up-andcoming area. “Drastic changes are coming to Cloverdale after decades,” Anderson says. “This is an opportunity 18 to 24 months before everyone else jumps in.” Homes at Latis start at $194,900. to the modern feel of the space. The microwave and dishwasher are housed in two drawers under the counter, providing a cool, space-age touch. Kerkhoff used quartz for the kitchen and bathroom countertops. Since quartz is less porous than granite, Anderson says it makes for a superior countertop surface. “This is a level above granite,” he says. “We tried to stain it with red wine – it didn’t work.” The living rooms feature laminate floors, faux-wood window blinds and 5.5-inch baseboard moulding. In the bedroom, buyers will find broadloom

There have been ¿ve such assaults at North Fraser Pretrial in the last ¿ve months, he said, and three at Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre in the past six months. Jeff Nagel jnagel@blackpress.ca

Guards in B.C. prisons are reporting an upswing in ugly attacks in which prisoners hurl feces or urine at them. A prisoner at North Fraser Pretrial Centre in Port Coquitlam splashed a correctional of¿cer there with a mixture of excrement and soup in the latest incident, which a union representative says appears to have been orchestrated by gangsters. “It hit him in the head, face and chest,” said Dean Purdy, spokesman for the B.C. Government and Service Employees Union. A lockdown resulted from the Jan. 27 attack and police have recommended an assault charge be laid. On the same day, a female correctional of¿cer at Surrey Pretrial Services Centre was savagely attacked by a female prisoner inside a living unit. “She was cut and scratched in the face and the inmate attempted to bite her ear off,” Purdy said,

disease exposure, Purdy added. “It’s an asssault that has psychological and physical impact.” The growing inÀuence of gangsters in prison seems to be a factor, he said. “Inmates are getting pressured by other inmates to do these kinds of assaults.” Purdy said some past excrement-throwing attacks have netted only an extra month in jail or time served – sentences he called “way off base.” But he applauded the one-year jail term handed out in early January for a similar assault by an inmate on a guard in Kamloops last November. Cory Stewart Mutchler pleaded guilty to assault after hurling a water bottle ¿lled with a mixture of excrement and urine that coated a guard with whom he’d had a dispute. Judge Herman Rohrmoser called it a “disturbing, disgusting and dangerous” tactic that goes “far beyond anything that can be considered normal or justi¿able.” Conditions at jails across B.C. are severely crowded and that’s thought to be one factor contributing to prison violence.
