Remembering 9/11 18 Years Later

By Steve Sears eptember 11, 2001 started out like a gorgeous late summer day.

The beautiful day soon turned ugly, as the biggest attack against the United States of America on home soil claimed 2,977 lives combined in New York City at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

New View Media Group reached out to various community members, seeking their remembrance of that fateful day.

Alex Roman Township of Mount Olive Councilman Alex Roman lost his Mom, 49-year-old Arcelia Castillo, on September 11, 2001. Instead of her normal 9:00 a.m., she had arrived early to work that morning at 7:45 a.m. to the World Trade Center North Tower.

American Airlines Flight 11 hit the tower at 8:48 a.m.

“I prefer to be left alone on 9/11,” says Roman. “Much

like my mother, I’m not comfortable with being viewed as a victim. My kids also spend the day quietly reflecting. We have attended several 9/11 ceremonies in New York City in the past, but mostly we prefer to go to the 9/11 Memorial at different times of the year.”

Roman celebrates his Mom’s life just like anyone else that has lost a loved one. “I never assume my loss is greater than anyone else’s,” he says. “I keep a picture of her at my shop along with a framed United States flag that was presented to us by President (George W) Bush. I routinely talk about her to my wife and kids and how each of them have some of her qualities. Her name regularly comes up at family gatherings.”

“As 9/11 approaches, I feel guilty being happy (my birthday is Sept. 8). It’s like a rollercoaster ride.”

Ray Perkins Former Township of Mount Olive Town Council President Ray Perkins was on the West Side Highway of Manhattan on the morning of September 11, 2001.

“I was in the city that day that the attack happened, continued on page 2

continued from front page and I was on my way into midtown, and a plane probably hit a few minutes after I passed by there. I’m on my way to attend a meeting up near Grand Central, and I get a call from one of my colleagues, and he says, ‘Hey, a plane just hit the (World) Trade Center – and it was a commercial plane!’ I said, “You’re kidding me!’ I get up to my appointment – and I’m passing ambulances and fire trucks like crazy, they’re sailing down towards this place – and I get to where I’ve got to go, and everybody is sitting there looking at the television. Out the window you could see the buildings. I then said, ‘I can’t believe this – oh my God!” Perkins headed to a pay phone (cell phone connections were knocked out that morning) line of about 200 people to wait and make a call, and then the second plane, United Airlines Flight 175, crashed into the South Tower.

Perkins then exited the line and started Ray Perkins at 911 Memorial dedication. running towards downtown, reached 23rd Street, then headed into a store to buy 12-packs of water, giving it to those who’d just experienced the most terrifying moments of their lives. “These people walking towards me look like someone had dumped flour on them, because now the buildings had collapsed.”

Perkins knew that Mount Olive needed to remember the lives that were lost that

day, and he kicked a memorial idea in motion. “On (United Airlines) Flight 93 that went down (in Shanksville, Pennsylvania), was Hilda Marcin, a woman from town, was employed through the Board of Education as a teacher. I had met Hilda; what a pleasant lady. She was moving out to live with her other daughter in California.”

Mayor Rob Greenbaum got involved, donations gathered, and current Council President Joe Nicastro’s stepson, Michael Lalama, came up with the design rendition. Perkins then forwarded the design to a Canadian company called Picture This in Granite, who took care of the final product. “We got an amazing amount of support,” says Perkins. “It was tremendous. It was heartwarming to see the community members and the township employees that dedicated their time and expertise to getting this done.”

Exploring Another Treatment Option for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

hronic fatigue immunodeficiency syndrome (CFIS) also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) is a disabling and poorly understood illness that is becoming more widespread in Western countries. CFIS is a term used to describe a myriad of neurological, neuromuscular, and immunological abnormalities. The initial onset of CFIS consists of flu-like symptoms including fever, sore throat, tender lymph nodes, chills and extreme fatigue. The chronic manifestations of CFIS always include disabling fatigue but can also include muscle and joint pain, sleep disorders, headaches, hypo- or hypersensitivities, cognitive disorders, depression, malaise, anxiety, irritability, confusion, weight fluctuations, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, muscle fatigue, worsening PMS, visual disturbances, tachycardia, paresthesias, dry eyes, dry mouth, night sweats, skin rashes and decreased sexual desire.

The etiology of CFIS is still unknown, but the suspected cause is a viral infection. Some researchers believe that CFIS is actually a neurological response to a viral infection. Since there are no absolute markers or lab tests to confirm the illness, chronic fatigue immunodeficiency syndrome is often diagnosed by symptoms alone and by process of elimination.

For the same reasons, western medicine has no treatment for chronic fatigue. Instead,

doctors prescribe individual medications to deal with each of the associated symptoms.

As with any illness, traditional Chinese medicine treats the individual on a case- bycase basis. A diagnosis is made based on the individual’s symptoms as well as their tongue and pulse presentations. The patient’s tongue is inspected and 6 pulses are felt on each wrist in order for the Acupuncturist/ Chinese Medical Practitioner to determine the diagnosis. Since chronic fatigue manifests differently in each person, this method of diagnosing is superior. The treatment plan is then formulated based on the individual’s diagnosis. As you can see in the chart- one Acupuncture treatment plan will address all of the individual’s symptoms as well as the illness as a whole. This is known as a root and branch treatment. Addressing the root cause of the chronic fatigue is addressing the illness as a whole while treating the branch aims to relieve all of the symptoms associated with the illness. continued from page 4 wives of coworkers asking if we had seen their husbands. They (the calls) were very hard and I didn’t know.”

A few days later, Katz and his team were stationed temporarily at a new location, and all the surviving employees hugged. “We helped each other, spent the next two months going to funerals – sometimes three to four a day – and the company provided counseling services if we needed it.”

Katz, who now teaches Finance as an adjunct professor at County College of Morris, occasionally gives talks regarding 9/11. “The people who died were innocent people going to work like I, who had young families, who went to work and didn’t come home. I think that’s obviously a tragedy, and I think in honor of them and the lives they led, the love they had and it was an injustice to them, their families and their country -- I think it’s important to remember the lives they led, the spirit that they shared, and I don’t ever want to forget that I knew these people.”

Tom Miller Tom Miller has been practicing fine art for years. He has a master’s in fine arts from the University of Idaho. He works in watercolor, colored pencil, ceramics, and more, and his topics are a variety. A Marine veteran, he was working at the time at Madison’s Fairleigh Dickinson University on an Operation Harvest Moon project, which is the operation he got injured in during his time in the Marines.

“Along comes the morning of 9/11, I’m at home waiting to go to a screenwriting

course – it was a 9:30 class – I’m drinking a cup of coffee, and had the radio on, and heard of a plane crash (at the World Trade Center). So, I turn the television on to see what was up, and then I saw a second plane go in.”

Miller went to his class but first stopped at Columbia Turnpike and Park Avenue in Florham Park to view the on-goings. “I could see it, just a bit of the towers and the smoke. “I tried to get into the city, asked the Morris County sheriffs to take me in, but they couldn’t.”

Learning that the towers had fell during the class, Miller started going to work on his 9/11 artwork. He has roughly 65 pieces, and he still creates them. His creations are given to first responders.

Miller, 78, lost a neighbor, Michael Sorresse, in the attacks. “He was a neighbor and a friend. I would say he was in his 30s, just had gotten married, worked for Marsh USA Agencies up on the 101st floor of tower one. I really liked him. He was a really nice kid. Then there was Giovanna Galletta “Gennie” Gambale (of Cantor Fitzgerald). I did a ceramic sculpture of her missing poster – I got her family’s okay.”

He then deeply reflects. “It (9/11) was as important as when my partner died in my arms (during an Operation Harvest Moon battle in 1965),” says Miller. “So many people, such a senseless thing, and because Mike died, too.”

When 9/11 occurred, a big piece of Rita Weiner’s heart was ripped apart.

That morning, she was preparing to head into New York City with her daughter, Michele. “My husband called me and told me something had hit the World Trade Center. Then, while watching television, I saw the second plane hit.”

“We didn’t go in; no one went in. 9/11 was horrendous.” She pauses, then continues. “I was angry.

I’m a New Yorker at heart and have always lived in the tri-state area. This is my heart, just like if you’re from France, Paris is yours. I grew up in the area -- Rockefeller Center, skating over there, Times Square, the whole bit - and to see it demolished like this… it was very, very hard.”

The next day, Weiner saw a Salvation Army ad asking for help at Ground Zero. Her Dad was alive at the time, and he saw the same ad. “He said, ‘When I was in World War II, the Salvation Army brought me blankets, they brought me hope, and I never forgot it.’ And he suggested I join.”

She worked with the Salvation Army on Thursdays, noon – midnight. And when Weiner, who prepared meals as a volunteer, and her entourage first arrived at the sight, she was shocked. “It was an absolute disaster. It looked like a nuclear explosion. It was like nothing I’ve ever seen, and the smell…I’ll never forget it. It was like decay, decomp. It goes in your nostrils and you never forget it for the rest of your life.

The ash would be up to your knee when you walked through it.” She then adds, “You would think from such

large office buildings, you would find desks and other things…nothing, it was like a giant crematorium. Another thing: we were not allowed to cry in front of the people. If you had to cry, you had to go in the back.”

However, it was a period Weiner would not regret.

“It was cathartic and healing for me. It was healing for them and healing for me. Instead of feeling helpless and important, I was doing something. I was helping somebody hurting.”

After serving at Ground Zero and the “other” Ground Zero (a morgue) with the Salvation Army from September 2001 to May 30, 2002, she then became a tour guide for World Trade Center Tribute Tours from October 2005 until 2018. She eventually received an award from the center for doing 500 tours, and even got her first tattoo ever…on her back, which has the 9/11 symbol and reads, “Remember and pray”. “It was in my DNA,” she says.

The whole experience changed her. “There’s pre9/11 Rita, and there’s post-9/11 Rita. Pre-9/11 was good; you never saw tragedy, you heard about Pearl Harbor, but you weren’t really a part of it. Post-9/11, I lived it personally; this was the first on my soil, in my town. I had hatred, and that bothered me, because I am a loving, giving person, and I don’t like having hatred in my heart. And I do believe when you have bitterness and hatred it kills you.” Serving with others fought the hatred. “I needed to express myself somehow to help others. The Salvation Army was the perfect way.’

Her advice? “Enjoy every day you have, because you see how quickly it can be taken away.”

Camp Merry Heart Provides Happiness for People with Disabilities and Special Needs

Camp Merry Heart, a vehicle of Easter Seals New Jersey, for 70 years has been providing happiness for people with disabilities and special needs.

Bob Zirkel, Director of Business Operations for Camping and Recreational Services for Easter Seals New Jersey, speaks about the camp’s benefits. “Camp Merry Heart is a fully-inclusive summer camp. We serve children ages 8 to 21, children to young adults age 18 to 21, and adult population which is 21 plus. We have some campers in their 80s who have been coming for 30-something years.”

500 – 600 campers enjoy Camp Merry Heart every year.

All program areas at Camp Merry Heart are fully accessible, as are all five cabins, and the majority of the camp is paved trails. Activities include swimming, fishing, boating, splash pad, games, biking, hiking, challenge courses, full-length zip lining, arts & crafts, gardening, team sports, rock climbing, karaoke, dancing, talent shows, and much more. There is also a fully functional kitchen at Camp Merry Heart attended to by an outside vendor.

Other key benefits of Camp Merry Heart are that caregivers as well get a respite from providing constant, around-the-clock care. Also, there is a travel option, too. “We also have a hotel and travel program that goes up and down the east coast. We’ll take campers on cruises and go to Niagara Falls, and over Fourth of July weekend we went to

Myrtle Beach.”

Montclair’s Tami Gaines had searched for a long time for a camp for her son Trey, who was born premature at just one pound and 13 ounces and requires oxygen care.

Trey spent his early years in and out of the hospital, his mom looking for ways to give her then 10-year-old son (now 13) with disabilities a normal experience like her other children.

She found Camp Merry Heart in 2017 – and was sold even prior to visiting the camp for the interview process. The deadline for registration was the day she learned of the camp. “That was the beginning when I learned how great they were. They were leaving at 5 and I called them and said ‘I’m never going to make it in time, so just forget it.

Camp Merry Heart... continued from page 9 to wait for Gaines’ 6 p.m. arrival, and the goodness continues. “I’m used to being on top of my son; he’s quite unpredictable. They said to me, ‘Tami, why don’t you go wait outside.’ I said, ‘What?’ because I have never left him alone before.’”

The folks meeting with her assured her Trey would be fine while they attempted to interact with him alone.

They did, and Trey became a Camp Merry Heart camper.

“I burst into tears. I started crying my eyes out.”

Gaines says Trey’s independence and interaction with other campers is huge, as is his partaking in zip lining and play and show participation. “When I first dropped him off (for his first five days of camp), I literally sat in my car and could barely drive I was crying so hard.

No one had ever taken care of my son other than me.

The fact that I was able to

trust them enough to leave him – a lot of parents have to let go of the fact that they’re the only ones that can take care of their kids; that they know best. Because Trey came home with a swagger.

When I picked him up from camp, he was literally a different kid. He was like, ‘I did this. I did this without you.’

He had so much more confidence.”

The primary camping season is from the second week of June until the end of August, but year-round respite opportunities are offered to individuals with disabilities as well as group offerings for the September to May off-season months.

Zirkel also recognizes the efforts of others who support the camp. 20 to 30 different Rotarian groups provide funds and actually physically provide services like fixing gutters, painting, and this type of aid has been

the norm for 30 to 40 years.

“We also work with groups like Valley National bank, M&M Mars, Amway, and more.”

Zirkel closes with an interesting story. “I took one of our staff members down to the local Med-Express.

Most of my staff are hired from overseas. He (the staff member) has a pretty thick English accent, and in Hackettstown someone with an English accent tends to stand out a bit. Sure enough, we’re waiting in the waiting area and a gentleman turns around and says, ‘Hey, are you guys from Camp Merry Heart?’ I said, ‘Yeah, as a matter of fact we are.’ This gentleman turned out to be a camper who had come to us about 30 years ago.”

Hackettstown’s Miller Named 2019 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar

t Warren County Community College Noelle Miller is recognized as a leader. Now, she is recognized nationally. Miller was recently named a 2019 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar, one of only 207 recipients from around the country. The scholarship is worth $1,000.

The Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program helps new Phi Theta Kappa members defray educational expenses while enrolled in associate degree programs.

Scholars are encouraged to assume leadership roles by participating in Society programs and are selected based on scholastic achievement, community service, and leadership potential. Nearly 900 applications were received.

"I was pleasantly surprised to receive the scholarship," said Miller, a sophomore at WCCC and who is a life-long resident of Hackettstown. "When I received the notification that I was awarded as a 2019 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar, I was ecstatic and overwhelmed with joy.

This scholarship gives me the opportunity to exert and explore leadership potential and further proceed with pursuing my academic goals and interests. I am beyond grateful to the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation for their generosity, and to Phi Theta Kappa for all of the opportunities that they have made available. I am also very thankful to my parents for their continued support throughout my collegiate journey."

Miller, a business administration major, was inducted as a member of the Phi Theta Kappa chapter at WCCC, AlphaUpsilon Rho, this past spring. She currently serves as Vice-President of the chapter's Leadership. This summer

she had the opportunity of attending the Phi Theta Kappa Middle States Regional Honors Institute and Leadership Academy in Towson, Maryland, with Chapter President, Andrea Massimo, Vice-President of Service, Jesse Hall, and WCCC Advisor, Jean Vasko. There, they collaborated with other chapters within the Middle States Region and learned more about service, leadership, and Phi Theta Kappa.

"In just a short time Noelle has become an integral part of the chapter," said Vasko. "She is clearly a leader and someone the other members look up to."

"I look forward to planning, collaborating, and participating in future chapter endeavors, such as community service projects in the upcoming academic year," said Miller. "I am so excited to see what the future holds."

Her future plans, upon graduation from WCCC next May, will include the pursuit of a bachelor's degree in Business Management or Finance at Liberty University.

And then to pursue a master’s degree in Business.

"My long term goals and dreams include that of becoming a successful businesswoman, adopting dogs, and raising a family," she said. "Along the way, I aspire to inspire and encourage others in their educational, career, and personal journeys."

Centenary Equine Studies Grad Begins Lucrative Career at World Renowned Facility

The school offers a Bachelor of Science in Equine Studies, a degree designed to provide students with a comprehensive background in the care and management of horses. Academic classes and riding instruction are offered at Centenary’s nationally-recognized Equestrian Center – some 65 acres of picturesque, preserved farmland.

It is the school’s renown in the equestrian field and its impressive facilities that first swayed recent graduate Michael Andrade of Poughquag, New York, whose former instructor Michael Dowling said that Andrade originally came to the school as a criminal

justice major. After just one year, according to Dowling, Andrade decided to change majors and concentrate on equine studies.

That decision proved providential as Andrade, who graduated in May, has already made an impact in the equine industry. With two national championship victories under his belt, the Centenary grad now has the opportunity to further his career as a top trainer in the field. He has recently secured a fulltime job at Heritage Farms, a world-renowned facility with locations in New York and Florida.

Dowling, an Assistant Professor of Equine Studies at Centenary, instructed Andrade academically and in riding classes for four years. Describing Andrade as an “excellent” student who took his academics just as seriously as riding,

Dowling pointed out that he also worked for the school throughout his enrollment.

“Having worked for all of the opportunities that [Andrade] had sets him apart from many of our young riders who have been entitled to most of what he had to work very hard for,” Dowling said. “He has a greater appreciation than many up and coming professionals. This will set him apart and has already been a great incentive to have to work hard to make it in the equine industry.”

While at Centenary, Andrade qualified for the Ariat Adult Finals, coming in eighth overall. He also qualified for the USEF Talent Search finals - catch riding throughout the year - and went out to California to compete in the West Coast Finals. According to continued on page 14

Mid-Atlantic Horticultural Therapy Conference Comes To The Frelinghuysen Arboretum

n Friday, September 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Mid-Atlantic Horticultural Therapy Network will hold their annual conference at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morris Township, NJ. The Frelinghuysen Arboretum is the perfect setting to hold this year’s event as the theme is horticultural therapy. The Frelinghuysen Arboretum, a facility of the Morris County Park Commission, has a dynamic horticultural therapy program, which provides internships for high school students with special needs, as well as recreational classes for a wide range of populations from seniors, adults with development and physical disabilities, as well as children with special needs.

The conference will bring together horticultural therapists from the mid-Atlantic region and interested

friends and families.

Speaker and Registered Horticultural Therapist, Patty Cassidy will share her experience providing horticultural therapy programming to individuals with memory loss. She works at the award-winning Portland Memory Garden, part of the Portland Public Parks System.

Participants of the conference can enjoy a guided tour of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum gardens, including the Scherer Garden for special needs populations, and participate in mock classes engaging in an activity utilized in horticultural therapy classes.

Budd Lake Dance School, New Jersey Dance & Show, Represents U.S.A. in South America

By: Michele DiPasquale here are more than a few dance schools in Morris County, but NJ Dance & Show Performing Arts - formerly of Mt. Olive and now in Budd Lake - has taken the art and commitment of dance to compete overseas to the South American city of Encarnacion, Paraguay.

On July 6 and 7, the NJ Dance & Show team represented the USA and competed against dancers from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Paraguay. Remarkably, all the dancers were privileged to share a stage and share their culture through the art of dance.

“It was a very beautiful experience for us because our dance team got to see the different forms of contemporary, jazz, ballet, and folk dancing that these countries presented, including us! That was definitely a great experience,” said Carolina Baez, Director of NJD&S. The South American competition celebrated its 18th year this past July. The group of dancers from NJD&S included Dayanara Aquino, Sofia DiSessa, Andrea

DiSessa, Sophia Nunez, Emily Vilagra, and Valery Valenzuela who presented a total of 21 dances between jazz, tap, contemporary, lyrical, and folk, all of them with great results, scholarships, and recognition.

Apart from the competition, the students were invited to radio and tv shows in Encarnación to share their experiences as young American dancers carrying on the culture of their parents by way of the Paraguayan folk dance.

“I personally really enjoyed this trip because not only did I get to bond with my team but I also got to experience how there are so many forms of dance around the world, and I definitely gained a lot more respect for the art of dance,” shared NJD&S student, Dayanara Aquino.

“Folk dance is a very important part of the Paraguayan culture, so seeing my daughter, along with her talented teammates, carry on the culture of our beautiful country was very heartwarming,” parent Nidia Cabrera said.

"Our goal as a dance studio is to pro-

"We stress the importance of dancers to be the best they can be on their own level. Dance is an individual art form and all students learn at their own pace. Our programs prepare students for success both in the dance studio and in life,” Director Baez said.

NJD&S proclaims that their specialty is creating smaller classes in which the teacher and the student can work closely together in order to expand each student’s skill set.

Everyone at NJ Dance & Show invites all those interested to become a part of their dance group. Mt. Olive’s New Fire Marshal Hopes to Continue High Standards Set by Predecessor

By Anya Bochman arc Muccione, the newly appointed fire marshal for the township of Mt. Olive, has big shoes to fill – something that he freely acknowledges himself. Muccione was appointed to his position by the township council, with his tenure officially beginning on July 29. It’s a bittersweet promotion, as Muccione will be filling in for previous longtime Mt. Olive fire marshal and his good friend Fred Detoro, who passed away on June 15 at the age of 52.

“Fred was a very smart guy who was unique in that he wore many hats,” Muccione said. “He built all these qualifications over the years, and now we have several people doing the jobs that Fred did alone.”

Muccione and Detoro were childhood friends, and they grew closer together when Muccione joined the fire department in 1988. Detoro was already on the team, and a legacy in the field of firefighting; his father was fire marshal before him. During his life, Detoro served as a chief and president of the Flanders Fire Department, as well as the fire marshal, construction official, EMS captain and OEM coordinator in Mt. Olive.

In the late 1990s, the township of Mt. Olive experienced some expansion, and needed a second fire inspector, a role that at the time was being fulfilled by Detoro.

Muccione received a call from his old friend inviting him to try out for the position. After completing the appropriate coursework needed for certification, Muccione also became a fire inspector.

As a member of the Mt. Olive Office of the Fire Mar-

shal, Muccione had new responsibilities that differed from those of a volunteer fire department member. The office was established in 1972, with its primary goal being the enforcement of the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code and other local fire safety regulations.

Major activities within the scope of the office include inspections of life hazard uses, fire safety complaints, fire permit control and smoke/carbon monoxide detector compliance for the resale of residential properties.

All fires occurring within Mt. Olive resulting in damage to property, death or serious injury are considered suspicious in nature and investigated by the Fire Marshal’s Office, which interacts with local and federal law enforcement and other agencies to ensure a thorough investigation. If a fire is deemed to be intentionally set following data gathering and analysis, the fire marshal will work closely with local law enforcement during the criminal aspect of the investigation.

Muccione explained that due to the office’s expansion into other towns, such as Hackettstown and Allamuchy, a current pressing issue is the delegation of resources.

“Because we cover so many towns, there are fires to attend to and investigate all the time – whether it’s in the middle of the night or whenever,” Muccione said. “Right now, getting additional help is a major concern.”

The new fire marshal reports that so far, his tenure has been a smooth transition, adding that the office is “taking time” to let the community absorb the loss of Detoro.

New Jersey Sharing Network Helps Others Through Organ Donation Facilitation

he NJ Sharing Network is a non-profit organization responsible for the recovery and placement of donated organs and tissues for the nearly 4,000 New Jersey residents waiting for a life-saving transplant.

It is also a part of the national recovery system which currently serves 115,000 people on the national waiting list.

Gary Imhoff, Marketing and Communications Manager of the NJ Sharing Network (New Providence, NJ) shared, “In 2018, 678 life-saving transplants were made possible, 537 from deceased donors and an additional 141 from living donors. Every day, approximately three people are added to the New Jersey waiting list, and one person dies every three days while waiting for a transplant.

One organ donor can save eight lives, and one tissue donor can restore health to over 75 people.”

Kelly Bonventre, a hospital service manager at Saint Clare’s Hospital (Dover and Denville), helps educate the staff on the process and activity regarding the network’s mission. She networks and makes relationships based on the importance of work The Sharing Network does. She shared that she makes rounds in the emergency rooms and ICU to provide the information to the specific areas in the hospital that would most

likely benefit from the information. She also ensures that the staff is medically trained in case by case need.

One Flanders, New Jersey man’s life mission was to help others and save lives. Even in his passing at St. Clare’s Hospital (Denville) on June 15, he fulfilled his mission as an organ donor for the NJ Sharing Network. He was 52 years old.

During his life, he accomplished great things and gave his life to helping others. He was a life-long member of the Flanders Fire Dept., serving as both past Chief & past President.

Fred also served Mt. Olive Twp. as Fire Marshal, Construction Official, Captain of EMS, and OEM Coordinator. He was an avid Yankees fan, enjoyed smoking cigars, playing with his pup, and spending quality time with his three daughters Kelsey, Morgan, and Riley as documented in his obituary.

The family showed his same compassion as they asked for donations to the American Heart Association in lieu of flowers after his death.

On its website, NJ Sharing Network encourages all communities to learn more about the life-saving benefits of organ and tissue donation. They post that increased awareness can be very helpful when talking

with family members, friends and co-workers about the benefits of organ donation.

Mr. Imhoff of the NJ Sharing Network shared that New Jersey residents can help save lives by registering as organ and tissue donors at www.NJSharingNetwork.org, having a conversation with family and friends, and joining NJ Sharing Network at its upcoming events.

He also shared that in 2020, the Trans-

plant Games of America are coming to NJ with 12,000 -15,000 people expected to attend this biennial multi-sport festival recognizing the success of donation and transplantation and honoring the generosity of donors and their families. In 1999, when the concept of water stewardship was no more than a buzzword to many municipalities, Mt. Olive had provided for it in the newly created Open Space and Recreation Plan (OSRP). The ambitious goals of the OSRP, which ranged from preserving existing open spaces to securing watershed and aquifer protection, sought to make use of a special tax that had been approved by Mt. Olive residents in 1996 for the express purpose of open space development.

On Tuesday, July 23, the Mt. Olive township council witnessed a presentation that expanded on updates to the 1999 plan.

The meeting opened with a welcome and introduction by the township’s Open Space Committee Chair Bob Delpizzo and Vicechair Kathy Murphy.

The Open Space Committee is a volunteer board appointed by the township council. Its primary purpose is to advise the governing body about the use of the Open Space Trust Fund (OSTF) as it relates to land acquisitions. The Committee is inclined

towards acquiring properties that demonstrate a mixed use of outdoor recreation activities, connecting with existing preserved lands and a potential for attracting funding partners.

Barbara Heskins Davis, Vice President of Programs at the Land Conservancy of New Jersey, took the floor following Delpizzo’s introductory remarks. Davis works in concert with the Chair of the Open Space Committee, and spoke at length about the state of open space programs in Mt. Olive in a presentation that looked at the updated OSRP and included a review of the map of preserved and public land. Davis’ presentation concluded with an explanation of the next steps to be taken, opening the floor to comments and questions by the public.

The Land Conservancy of New Jersey is an accredited land trust that preserves land and water resources, conserves open space, and empowers individuals and communities to protect natural land and the environment.

Preserving land is at the heart of the organization’s work, and it has been an important partner for the Open Space Committee in this endeavor. Additionally, the continued on page 26

Conservancy strives to ensure plentiful supply of safe, clean drinking water, productive land for agriculture, sustainable land for wildlife and forests to thrive, and neighborhood parks and natural areas for people to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

The Conservancy’s staff and Board of Trustees is a group of dedicated experts that include certified planners, wetland scientists, GIS mapping professionals, project managers and land preservation specialists.

Davis joined the Conservancy staff in 1999, and currently leads the nonprofit organization’s award-winning municipal services program, Partners for Greener Communities. This program has helped New Jersey towns receive $232 million in federal, state and county grants for land preservation, and preserve 16,000 acres in their communities. Davis’ responsibilities include the supervision and completion of Open Space and Recreation Plans, Farmland Preservation Plans, Trail and Greenway Plans and Environmental Resource Inventories for towns and counties. Davis is a licensed planner certified by the American Institute of Certified Planners.

According to Davis, Mt. Olive is the first township in Morris County to create an

open space program that is supported by a levied tax.

“It’s truly remarkable the way that the township residents have leveraged the grant to preserve acres of land,” Davis said.

“For example, within the first few years [of OSRP’s implementation], they bought the Kantor property.”

The Kantor purchase that Davis refers to effectively expanded the Budd Lake Bog Natural Area in 1998, one year after the creation of the Open Space Committee and the trust fund for land preservation. Budd Lake is New Jersey’s largest natural lake and contains a bog that is one of the state’s most unique natural features. The lake is the headwaters of the South Branch Raritan River, a drinking water resource for over a million residents downstream. Acquisition of lands around the north end of the lake maintains a natural buffer around the bog, protecting the natural resources.

Since the special tax to preserve open space went into effect in November 1996, the township has preserved over 2,000 acres of land in addition to funding a diverse array of recreation facilities. The collected tax is placed in the OSTF, where continued on page 41

To make Berry Garnish: In mixing bowl, lightly toss raspberries, blueberries and strawberries to evenly combine. Keep chilled.

Heat electric griddle to 375 F. Arrange pound cake slices, side by side, flat, in casserole dish or pan with sides. Pour Honey Leches over and around pound cake slices; soak 1 minute.

Lightly coat griddle with nonstick cooking spray. Remove pound cake slices from Honey Leches, allowing liquid to drain off, then

place each slice on hot griddle.

On griddle, cook pound cake slices approximately 2 minutes on each side until golden crispy and hot throughout.

To serve, place two overlapping pound cake slices on plate (four plates total). Top each with approximately 1/4 cup mixed berries then drizzle each with approximately 2 tablespoons hot honey.

8 thin slices tomato Place cheese in freezer about 1 hour ahead of time.

Heat grill to medium-high heat. In small bowl, mix hot sauce and mayonnaise; set aside.

In large bowl, season beef, pork, onion, bacon, tomato paste and breadcrumbs with salt and pepper. Using hands, mix until well combined.

Using hands, form meat mixture into four balls. With thumb, make indentation in centers of balls and place one chunk cheese in center of each. Begin shaping burgers around cheese until patties form.

Spanish Potato and Onion Omelet Recipe courtesy of the National Onion Association 1 cup olive oil, divided 4 Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/8-inch slices (about 4 cups) salt, to taste pepper, to taste 2 medium onions, thinly sliced (2-2 1/2 cups) 6 eggs

4 ounces cured, cooked ham or prosciutto, diced In large saute pan, heat 3/4 cup olive oil. Cook half potatoes until tender and golden, turning often. Drain. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Repeat with remaining potatoes.

Add 4 tablespoons olive oil to pan. Cook onions until soft, about 15 minutes. Add potatoes to onions.

In large bowl, beat eggs. Add eggs to potato and onion mixture. Stir in diced ham or prosciutto. Reduce heat to low and cook 8-10 minutes until golden brown on bottom. Invert platter on pan and flip omelet onto plate. Add remaining olive oil to pan; slide omelet back into pan.

Cook until golden brown on bottom.

Get Creative with Apples this Fall

A

utumn is apple-picking season, and many farmers markers, grocery stores and even roadside apple stands are chock-full of delicious apples this time of year. That makes fall the perfect time to whip up some apple-inspired foods. This recipe for “Elsie’s Stewed Apples” from Laurey Masterton’s “The Fresh Honey Cookbook” (Storey) requires a tad more effort than traditional applesauce recipes, but the extra work is well worth it in the end. When shopping for apples in advance of preparing this recipe, avoid apples that have a mealy texture as well as those that are overly sweet.

Elsie’s Stewed Apples Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1⁄2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1⁄2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done.

2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1⁄2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want

them to turn into applesauce.

3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

Turn Apple-Picking Excursions into Apple Pies

C

ertain activities are unique to autumn, and apple-picking certainly falls into that category. Many families look forward to their annual trips to nearby apple orchards, where they can spend beautiful autumn afternoons picking fresh apples everyone can’t wait to take a bite out of.

While fresh apples are a delight on their own, few apple afficionados can resist the temptation to make apple pie. If homemade apple pie is on your agenda this year, consider the following recipe for “French Apple Pie” from Mollie Cox Bryan’s “Mrs. Rowe’s Little Book of Southern Pies” (Ten Speed Press).

French Apple Pie Makes one 9-inch pie 1 recipe Plain Pie Pastry (see below) Raisin Filling 2⁄3 cup raisins 6 tablespoons water 1⁄2 teaspoon lemon juice 1⁄4 cup light corn syrup 1 1⁄2 teaspoons all-purpose flour 1 1⁄2 teaspoons sugar 2 apples (preferably a tart variety) 1⁄4 cup brown sugar 1⁄2 cup sugar 1⁄4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1⁄2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 1⁄2 teaspoons cornstarch

Icing 1 cup confectioners’ sugar 2 tablespoons water 1 tablespoon butter, softened To make the raisin filling, combine the raisins, water and lemon juice in a heavy saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat to medium-low and cook, stirring occasionally until the raisins are plump, about 15 minutes.

Separately, combine the corn syrup, flour and sugar and mix well, then add to the raisins and continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until thick and syrupy, about 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and cool un-

til the mixture is just warm, about 10 to 15 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 400 F. Line a 9-inch pie plate with 1 rolled-out crust.

Peel the apples, cut them into thin wedges, and put them in a large bowl. Separately, combine the sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch, then add to the apples and gently stir until evenly mixed.

Spread the apple mixture in the crust in an even layer, then spread the raisin filling evenly over the apples.

Brush the rim of the crust with water, cover with the second rolled-out crust, seal and flute or crimp the edges, and cut a steam vent in the center.

Bake for 40 to 50 minutes,

until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack for 1 to 2 hours, until completely cool.

To make the icing, combine the sugar and water and mix well. Add the butter and mix until smooth. Brush over the top of the cooled pie before serving.

Plain Pie Pastry Makes two 9-inch pie crusts 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 2⁄3 cup vegetable shortening 5 to 7 tablespoons cold milk Sift the flour and salt into a bowl. Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender until it is the size of small peas.

Bullying and The Law

nder New Jersey law, a person is protected from harassment on the basis of their race, national origin, religion, disability, age, sexual orientation, familial status or sex. Moreover, each school district is required to adopt a policy prohibiting harassment, intimidation and bullying (“HIB”).

As a parent, knowing your legal rights and how to exercise them is important. Hiring a lawyer, however, can be expensive and is not an option for many people. Thankfully, several free resources are available on the New Jersey Department of Education’s website, including: - “Guidance for Parents on the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act”: This comprehensive guide provides an overview of HIB procedures, such as: (i) the various steps of an HIB

complaint and investigation; (ii) filing a complaint with the Division of Civil Rights or the Superior Court; (iii) contacting the County Office of Education; and (iv) appeals to state agencies and the Appellate Court.

ith each school year, parents dust off their annual checklists that help them organize their needs as their kids head back to the classroom.

continued from page 26 funding is dedicated solely towards open space and farmland preservation and recreation facility development. The OSTF helps Mt. Olive remain a community with a healthy mix of natural lands, diverse places to play, and commercial and residential development.

Some of the more notable expenditures of the OSTF resulted in a dog park for Mt. Olive pets and their owners in Turkey Brook Park, and a property on Budd Lake that will provide a place for residents to enjoy all that the unique lake has to offer. Throughout the history of the OSTF, the township has purchased a total of 17 properties, nine of which are located in Budd Lake and seven in Flanders. The remaining property, Turkey Brook Greenway, is in the geographic center of Mt. Olive.

The properties acquired by the OSTF over the years are diverse, with the largest being 600 acres (the hillside overlooking Budd Lake) and the smallest 12 acres. Significantly, the trust has allowed some of Mt. Olive’s most treasured natural and historical landmarks to remain a part of the community in perpetuity. This integration of historical and geographical preservation is a point specifically outlined in the original OSRP. Mt. Olive and its incorporated areas have a history of being primarily farming communities balanced by a number of wooded preserves and bodies of water. Notable structures that speak to the township’s scenic farmland are the Charters Farm on Stephens State Park Road, the Devlin Farm and the Church of Illumination Farm.

The township is also home to the Mount Olive Village Historic District, located along Mount Olive Road and Flan-

ders-Drakestown Road. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015 and includes the Mount Olive Baptist Church and Schoolhouse. The OSTF paid for renovations to the 18th century church and adjoining cemetery, as well as a roof on the Seward Mansion - Mt. Olive’s premier historic site located in Turkey Brook Park.

“Some of the areas are not what you would traditionally consider ‘open space’; there are a lot of historic spaces, as well as churches and farms,” Davis said.

Historical preservation in the township has been almost synonymous with its environmental efforts. Written into the original OSRP is a plan to “save scenic landscapes and features that evoke memories of Mt. Olive’s natural and cultural heritage.” The township open space is likewise meant to “complement historic and cultural areas.”

Other goals of the original plan include the establishing of a park within a 10-minute walk or bike ride of every resident; ensuring an adequate supply of recreation lands for residents of all ages; protecting water quality and quantity by keeping streambanks and their shores in a natural state; safeguarding landscape diversity by encouraging farmland preservation; and creating incentives for regional resource protection by extending Patriots’ Path through Mt. Olive.

The importance of open space preservation was underscored at the township council meeting when a young town resident spoke up to say that he had moved to Mt. Olive specifically for its community garden. The participation of the entire township community in open space preservation is something Davis recognizes.

“Mt. Olive has a very engaged community, with a very

robust volunteer base,” the licensed planner said. “They have always been ahead of their time in terms of land and water preservation.”

The trust, which had started as a one cent levy for every $100 at its inception and increased to three cents within a couple of years has been an advantageous deal, economically, for Mt. Olive residents. For every dollar used by the trust taxpayers to preserve land in Mt. Olive, other partners have contributed $8. According to the Open Space Committee, if this land had not been preserved, over 800 new homes could have been built, further taxing stretched educational and municipal service budgets.

Partners in Mt. Olive land preservation have included the State Green Acres Program, Morris County Open Space and Farmland Preservation Trust, Federal Forest Legacy Program, and nonprofit conservation organizations - particularly the Land Conservancy of New Jersey. Historically, about 57 percent of expenditures from the OSTF have purchased land, with 40 percent of the funds being used to develop recreation facilities, primarily in Turkey Brook Park.

The remaining three percent have been spent towards historic preservation in recent years.

The next steps for the Land Conservancy, as outlined

by Davis at the July meeting, include conducting an open space tour of the township, reviewing the Recreation and Open Space Inventory (ROSI) and private Homeowner Association, updating goals and submitting a draft report to the Open Space Committee and the township planning board. “Right now we are getting a good lay of the land – that is where we’re at [in regard to the OSRP],” Davis said. “The question now is ‘Where do we go from here?’”

Lately, the Land Conservancy has been at work on South Branch Preserve along

Wolfe Road. The property is owned by the Conservancy and recently saw a farmer from CityGreen farming part of the land.

“We are restoring land for a butterfly/ pollinator meadow, and in addition to the garden we have goats helping to eat all of the invasive plant species (our ‘Chew Crew’!),” Davis said.

United Presbyterian’s Popular Apple Festival Returns

By: Daniel del Ben ummer is coming to a close but before we get ahead of ourselves and move on to pumpkins, it’s going to be apple festival time in New Jersey. A longtime staple for Morris County residents has been United Presbyterian’s Apple Festival in Flanders which has taken place annually for over 15 years now. This year’s festival will be held on Sat. October 5 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the auction starting around 2 p.m.

“Our church has been blessed with an amazing backyard, one of the largest remaining open spaces in town, which we use for a variety of purpose throughout the year, including outdoor worship on summer Sundays, games at our annual Vacation Bible School and, of course, it gives us room for everything at the Apple Festival,” said Church Pastor Reverend Richard Oppelt. “What I particularly like is the variety of activities and experiences our small congregation is able to offer through this annual event.”

The annual festival works as both a fundraiser and a community outreach program.

There are many youth and family-based events going on all day including games, arts and crafts, and a bounce house. There will be dozens of vendors at the event selling anything from jewelry, crafts, clothes, photography, and more.

The church grounds are also a great area for picnicking, and there will be a wide variety of food vendors. Many will sell hot dogs and hamburgers, and other picnic foods.

Church members will also hold a bake sale.

Budd Lake’s RH Farms will be selling fresh produce and the Lion’s Club will provide fun-

nel cakes.

“One of the highlights of the festival every year is the Live Auction. Any monies earned go to support projects of the church, particularly youth programs and various local and international mission projects we do throughout any given year,” said Oppelt. “It also gives us a small supply of money we can use when people in the community approach us with a particular crisis need. Young Athlete Recovery:

How Chocolate Milk Can Aid in Replenishing Nutrients for Teen Athletes

B

etween sports practices, training, games and tournaments, teen athletes endure a lot of stress on their bodies. While some parents know real dairy milk is a nutritious option for growing kids, many don’t realize that chocolate milk has nutritional benefits, too – especially when it comes to exercise recovery.

According to a first-of-its-kind study from the University of Texas at Austin, recovering with low-fat chocolate milk as part of a tough training routine could help teen athletes get stronger. The study included more than 100 high school athletes entering grades 9-12 who were enrolled in a five-week training program involving training four days a week. Some students recovered with chocolate milk and others recovered with a sports drink with the same amount of carbohydrates but no protein.

Researchers found that students who recovered with chocolate milk had greater strength gains compared to those who recovered with sports drinks. In fact, the chocolate milk group bench-pressed an average of 3.5% more at the end of the program than at the beginning, whereas teens who recovered with sports drinks actually decreased their bench-press weight by close to the same amount, around 3.2%. Additionally, those who recovered with chocolate milk improved in squat strength by nearly twice as much as those who consumed sports drinks for post-workout recovery, lifting an average of 15% more weight (compared to about 8% more weight) by the program’s end.

To Gel or Not to Gel

re gel manicures as good as they look?

What’s the finishing touch for the contemporary fashionista? Look to your hands. Whether you are going for the feminine look or the professional career look, manicures make a difference. There are not only hundreds of polish colors available to complement your style but also more durable and longer-lasting polish formulas.

Within the last ten years, there has been a surge in the popularity of gel manicure due to their durability and shine. There are some risks associated with these manicures, however, including skin damage from the ultraviolet light used during the curing process. If a gel manicure is performed properly with UV protection, however, you can enjoy the benefits of great looking nails according to the American Academy of Dermatology and Board-Certified Dermatologist Chris G. Adigun, MD, FAAD, who specializes in nails at her private practice in Chapel Hill, N.C. “Gel manicures have been around for a long time,” Dr. Adigun says, “But they have become more popular over the last 10 years, thanks to the development of polish formulas that are easier to apply and remove. Today,” she says, “a gel manicure can be performed in nearly the same

amount of time as a traditional manicure — with better results.”

When applied properly, gel polish won’t chip in a few days like traditional nail polish. “Durability is the No. 1 benefit of a gel manicure,” Dr. Adigun adds. “Plus, no other manicure has the high shine that you get with a gel.”

A gel manicure can improve the appearance of anyone’s nails, but the results may be especially beneficial to those whose nails are deformed or discolored because

of disease or trauma. Regular nail polish may not adhere properly to a damaged nail or provide enough coverage to mask discoloration, but a gel polish can do both, which makes gel manicures a good option for many patients with nail disorders. “Nails are very visible, so disfigured or discolored nails can be really embarrassing for patients, making it difficult for them to work and socialize,” Dr. Adigun emphasizes. “For many patients, a gel manicure can be life-changing.”

Gel manicures are not for everyone. According to Dr. Adigun, “Weak or brittle nails may not be able to withstand a gel manicure and are not appropriate for people who are highly sensitive to UV light.”

Because the curing lamps emit UVA rays, UV exposure during gel manicures should be a concern for everyone, not just people who know they are especially UV-sensitive, which can lead to premature aging and may increase skin cancer risk.

Dr. Adigun also notes that the acetone used to remove gel polish may dry out the nail, but attempting to remove the polish by scraping or chipping can cause damage. It’s important to ensure that a gel manicure is applied and removed properly.

“A gel manicure can give your nails a great, long-lasting look, as long as it is performed properly and you protect your hands from the UV curing light,” Dr. Adigun says. “If you’re concerned about UV exposure or the health of your nails, talk to a board-certified dermatologist.”

ith each school year, parents dust off their annual checklists that help them organize their needs as their kids head back to the classroom.

Randolph Climbing Center Hosts Fundraiser No. 17 Vol. 1 for Epic Experience

O

n the evening of Saturday December 15, Randolph Climbing Center (RCC) hosted an event Climbing Beyond Cancer to fundraise for the organization Epic Experience.

Epic Experience provides free weeklong adventure ex-

periences to adults who have been diagnosed with canacer. “Most organizations that existed at the time when Epic Experience was founded focused on kids or young adults. Epic Experience is the only one who does adults and all stages of Cancer, both

those currently in treatment and survivors,” says Sabine Schwab, who organized the event.

Schwab, 36, of Roxbury, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2014 at age 32, shortly after giving birth to her daughter. Her tumor was about the size of a golf

ball. “I had open brain surgery, six weeks of daily radiation, and a year of chemotherapy,” says Schwab. She is a brain cancer survivor of almost five years now and devotes much of her time volunteering.

“I have dedicated my life to the cancer community. I serve on various boards, and I’m a speaker and advocate in the brain tumor community,” says Schwab.

Schwab’s experience brought her white water rafting on the Colorado River, among other activities. “It’s not just the adventures that bring the healing,” says Schwab, “they also make time for group discussions with commonly shared fears and questions along the cancer journey.”

nother school year means millions of children across the country are boarding buses at the beginning and end of each day, and it provides an appropriate opportunity for parents, teachers, school administrators and students themselves to practice and enforce safety guidelines in and around the school bus.

Consider these tips from the experts at the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) to help keep children safe before bus rides, during travel and after exiting the vehicle.

Before the Bus Arrives Ensure backpacks are packed securely so papers and other items don’t scatter as the bus approaches.

Create a morning routine that puts kids at the bus stop five minutes before the scheduled pickup time. This helps avoid a last-minute rush, when safety lessons are easily forgotten, and ensures kids are safely in place for boarding.

Encourage children to wear bright, contrasting colors so they can be seen easier by drivers.

Instruct children to walk on the sidewalk.

If there is no sidewalk, advise them to stay out of the street, walk single-file, face traffic and stay as close to the edge of the road as possible.

Walk young children to the bus stop or encourage kids to walk in groups. There is safety in numbers; groups are easier for drivers to see.

If kids must cross a street, driveway or alley, remind them to stop and look both ways before crossing.

Verify the bus stop location offers good visibility for the bus driver; if changes are needed, talk with nearby homeowners or school district officials to implement changes. Never let kids wait in a house or car, where the driver may miss seeing them approach the bus.

Remind children that the bus stop is not a playground. Balls or other toys could roll into the street and horseplay can result in someone falling into the path of oncoming traffic.

Instruct children to stay at least three steps away from the road and allow the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching it.

On the Bus Ride When boarding the bus, items can get bumped and dropped. Caution children that before picking anything up, they should talk to the driver and follow instructions to safely retrieve their possessions.

Teach safe riding habits: stay seated with head, hands and feet inside at all times; keep bags and books out of the aisle and remain seated until the bus stops moving.

Remind kids that just like when riding in

Back-to-School Bus Safety cars, loud noises are off limits so they don’t distract the driver. That includes cellphones and other electronic devices; instruct children to put them on mute or use headphones.

Leaving the Bus Remind children to look before stepping off the bus. If they must cross the street, teach them to do so in front of the bus by taking five big steps (approximately 10 feet) away from the front of the bus, looking up and waiting for the driver to signal that it is safe.

For parents who meet their kids at the bus, remember that excited kids may dart across the street. Eliminate the risk by waiting on the side of the street where kids exit the bus.

Make the bus ride part of your daily “how was school?” discussion. Encourage kids to talk about the things they see and hear on the bus so you can discuss appropriate behaviors and, if necessary, report any concerns to school administrators.

As bullying is prevalent and buses are no exception, ask children to tell you about any bullying they observe, whether against another child or themselves, and talk about how to shut down bully behaviors.
