In the world of pure imagination, people can be anything or anyone they want to be. By utilizing imagination, all things are possible. For kids with autism, this is especially important. By making learning fun, Turtle Dance Music LLC is helping kids of all abilities come out of their shells. Staunchly believing that learning takes place in and out of the classroom, Turtle Dance Music Company LLC, was founded by Livingston Alumni Matt Mazur and David Colicchio. Geared toward children in Pre- K, Kindergarten to 5th Grade, and also children with autism, Turtle Dance Music Company combines arts like music, dance and even theater to spark the imagination and curiosity about learning. Their motto is to further both early childhood development and autism intervention through sensory-friendly shows and concepts. According to Mazur, the most essential thing about their programs is engaging the children creatively, teaching them about important social, emotional and educational topics.

Coming up with the idea for Turtle Dance Music Company was kind of a no brainer for this Livingston Grad, Class of 2006. Throughout his school career, he was very involved with music and theater and gravitated towards the arts. He has worked as a teacher, musician and Autism Intervention Specialist. The company’s programs are filled with hands-on, sensory experiences. They are just perfect for both kids, adults, and the whole family. Excitedly telling that some of their shows are great for children on the autism spectrum scale, and others are focused for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) programs. He’s hard-pressed to choose a favorite, he enjoys them all equally. Mazur tells that the main show they do for schools, libraries, families, and autism centers is their “Music Bubble and Comedy Show: Why Reading Rocks!” This is a high energy music and comedy show about why reading rocks. This inclusive program is filled with songs, bubbles, comedy, and music technology. It’s wonderful for children, children on the autism spectrum scale, parents and caregivers. Each song in the show is accompanied by hands-on, visual and sensory experi-

ences. During the program, kids can sing, dance, and understand why reading is so important to the future. With “Space! The Cosmos For Kids”, children in grades Pre-K to 2nd, grades 3-5 and families, can enjoy this techno-space dance party. Soar to new heights when Information about the universe is filled with music, technology, and a thumping beat. “Songs That Count” is just perfect for children who love to count, read, and make up original hiphop beats. This is an inclusive, autism-friendly

program filled with music movements and counting activities. With “Songs That Count,” it is for sure that addition and subtraction will never be considered boring again. Participants get into the act playing instruments, trying out interactive technologies, and dancing. “Wally and the Water Cycle,” and “Why Ecosystems Rock” explains biodiversity, evaporation, condensation, and more. Through creativity, these great programs make important issues understandable, creative and fun. continued on page 4

Three Essex County Students Win the Annual Nancy and Robert Eskow NCJW/Essex Volunteer Awards

he National Council of Jewish Women, Essex County Section (NCJW/Essex) honored three extraordinary Essex County high school students with the Nancy and Robert Eskow NCJW Volunteer Awards. The recipients of the awards were recognized for their outstanding contributions to many different causes, including long-term volunteer efforts towards congenital heart defects, preventing and raising awareness of substance abuse, and creating a district program to assist children with Selective Mutism. This is the 16th

year the award has been bestowed to deserving high school students. The 2019 award winners include Curtis Mark of Orange High School, Giulia Russo of James Caldwell High School, and Allison Kofsky of Columbia High School. These high school seniors have shown a dedication to improving the lives of others locally and globally. This year’s winners of the Nancy and Robert Eskow NCJW Volunteer Awards each received a $500 scholarship and a commemorative certificate. Curtis Mark, a senior at Orange High School, be-

gan volunteering with the non-profit organization Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team (ADAPT), where he was able to expand his knowledge about substance abuse in order to help his community. “To make a community-level change, we must involve the community in our efforts,” reflected Curtis. “Once we do this, the room for growth is endless.” Through all of his efforts to prevent substance abuse, he was presented with numerous awards and was selected as the sole United States Delegate at the United Nations Youth Forum.

Livingston High School Alums... continued from front page Bright and energetic, Mazur assets that he didn’t want his programs to be considered boring or lame by the kids. “Especially since they are so in tune with YouTube and the instant attention of social media these days, we want to grab them right away.” Realizing that information--especially important information-- can be dry and monotonous depending on how it is presented, Mazur and Colicchio decided to spice it up. Utilizing his background in theater, musicals, and all creative arts, Mazur decided to combine it with his love of information and reading. The Livingston Grads went a step further tailoring their programs so that children could become active and absorbed in their learning. The results were amazing. “Kids often come into libraries or the assembly with their arms crossed thinking that our programs are going to be lame and the same as every other program they sit through. At the end of it, they are raising their arms, singing along, laughing and having fun with us. It’s great!” he enthuses. Now, Turtle Dance Mu-

sic LLC presents 20 to 50 performances a week. They entertain at schools, libraries and autism centers, with thousands of happy kids coming out of their shells. Mazur likens his program to Schoolhouse Rock, Mr. Rogers Neighborhood or Sesame Street programs of the past, in the way that these shows had inspired kids to learn years ago. Candidly sharing that there was a time in his life where his self-esteem took a massive hit, Mazur says he took solace in the free public libraries, reading and learning all he could. Through that simple action, he realized he didn’t feel so alone. Through books he felt empowered to be more, to do more. It was a feeling that he wanted to share with the next upcoming generation. In co-founding Turtle Dance Company, he decided to make learning innovative and to educate kids about important issues at the same time. “At Turtle Dance Music we combine creativity with the ideas of Stephen Hawking,” he enthuses. The response from the public was something they never would have predicted.

Outstanding Scholars Both Inside and Outside of the Classroom Honored by NJ Council of County Colleges

By: Kimberly Redmond wo students from the County College of Morris were recently honored for their successes inside of the classroom, as well as their contributions outside of it. Alejandra Linares Martinez, of Livingston, and Joaquin Mould Parga, of Randolph, were among the 38 students recognized by the New Jersey Council of County Colleges (NJCC) on May 8 at the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton. For the last 25 years, the New Jersey Community College Scholars Celebration has honored New Jersey’s best and brightest community college students and their families. New Jersey Council of Community Colleges chairman Phil Linfante said, “Each year, we invite New Jersey’s top community college students to celebrate their outstanding academic achievements and exceptional service to their communities as members of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at their local community colleges.” For more than a century, Phi Theta Kappa has recognized and encouraged community outreach and academic excellence among students pursuing a community college associate degree. To be invited to join Phi Theta Kappa, students must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Dr. Anthony J. Iacono, president of the County College of Morris, said, “We are so proud of Alejandra and Joaquin and their academic success and contributions to the college and the larger community. They are an inspiration and a testament to the value of working hard and giving back to others.”

Martinez, a design major, has served as vice president of fellowship for the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) chapter at the school, as a member of the design club and was a semifinalist for the prestigious nationally awarded Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship. A business administration major, Parga has served as president of the school’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter and is a member of the Alpha Beta Gamma Honor Society. He is also the recipient of the college’s Douglas A. Patton Campus Life Award in recognition of his contributions to the school. New Jersey Council of Community Colleges President Aaron Fichtner said, “Our 19 community colleges provide life changing opportunities to over 325,000 students each year, and these 38 students are accomplished academic scholars and community leaders on our campuses.” Other Northern New Jersey students recognized this year are: Essex County College students Massaer Mar of Hillside and Johanna Navas of Newark; Passaic County Community College students Valeri Al-Touma of Clifton and Andy Perales of Paterson; Raritan Valley Community College students Michael Allers of Frenchtown and Alec Wrana of Bernardsville; Sussex County Community College students Adam Cueman of Highland Lakes and Patrick Hild of Newton; and Warren County Community College students Brenda Haycock of Columbia and Arleen Molina of Hackettstown. Livingston Appoints New Superintendent

By Jason Cohen ivingston Township will have a new superintendent for the 2019 school year. On May 20, the Livingston Board of Education approved the appointment of Dr. Matthew Block as superintendent of Livingston Public Schools. Block, 45, brings with him to the district more than two decades of experience in education. He began his new role July 1. “As I begin the process of making the Livingston Public Schools my new educational home, I am anxious to listen and to learn about our schools and community from students, educators, and parents,” Block said. “I look forward to partnering with the board, staff, and community as, together, we continue the important work of providing our students with highly engaging, innovative, and supportive learning experiences." He has held varied positions including teacher, assistant principal and principal. For the past eleven years, he served as the Summit Public Schools middle school principal and beginning in 2015, as the district’s director of human resources. But, the Caldwell resident is ready for a new chapter in his life. “I’m excited. I’ve already begun talking with people in the Livingston School District,” he said. Block, who grew up in West Orange, said his passion for education stems from his mom, Jill Block, who was a nursery school teacher for 40 years and his time as a camp counselor. He found his passion for mentoring children

while working at Fairview Lake YMCA Camp in Newton from 1991 to 2001. In fact, in 1997 he was the assistant director and director from 1998 to 2001. “I think my mom definitely played a role,” he said. “She has 40 years of kids and families she connected with.” He graduated from American University in 1996 with degrees in communications and history. Block earned both his Master of Arts degree in Teaching and his Master of Education degree in Administration and Supervision at Montclair State University. He continued his education at Caldwell University, where he obtained his Doctorate in K-12 Educational Leadership. He spent the first six years of his career as a social studies teacher, first in West Orange and then in Westfield. In June 2005, he was hired as the assistant principal of the Edison Intermediate School in Westfield. Block was appointed as principal of East Hanover Middle School in August 2007. He was then hired by Summit Public Schools as principal of the Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School in July 2008, where he served until accepting his current position as the district’s director of human resources in June 2015. In 2014, Dr. Block received the Nora Radest Award for Excellence in Education by the Summit Educational Foundation for his work in transforming the middle school experience in Summit. He feels that his 20 years of experience have prepared him for his new role. He added it will be nice working so close to home. “What I’m really going to miss about Summit are the

people,” Block commented. “I feel confident going into this position that I’m ready to take it on. Even 20 years after leaving summer camps, it’s all about the kids for me.” He recalled how when he was a child, he originally wanted to be a baker and president. But, he found his calling in education. Now with a wife, Miriam, and two kids, Harry, 13 and Shayna, 10, he is eager to join Livingston.

Livingston Grad Named US Presidential Scholar

By: Danielle Incognito anessa Hue was recently one of eight high school seniors in New Jersey to be named a U.S. Presidential Scholar for 2019. Every year, the White House selects scholars after taking in account their academic successes, artistic achievements, school evaluations, transcripts, community services, commitment to high ideals, leadership roles, and the essays they submit. Over 3.6 million students were expected to graduate from high school this past year, and 5,200 of them qualified for the award. The candidates were selected as a result of their outstanding performances on the College Board SAT and ACT tests as well as through nominations made by the chief state school officers, partner recognition organizations, and through the National Young Arts Foundation’s national

Young Arts Competition. Established in 1964 by an executive order of the President, the award recognizes the nation’s most distinguished graduating students. Later, in 1979, the program included students who displayed achievements in the visual, literary, and performing arts categories as well. It is now one of the highest honors for high school students in the United States. Every year it honors over 7,500 students who perform the highest in the nation. The program also honors one young woman and one young man from every state in the United States. Students are also chosen from the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and families living abroad. Fifteen families are chosen at-large, and 20 scholars are chosen from the arts and well as from the career and technical programs. Technical and career

programs began being recognized in 2015. Winners like Vanessa took a trip in June to Washington DC, where they were presented a medallion at a ceremony sponsored by The White House. Each summer, 161 Presidential Scholars take part in educational seminars and workshops with authors, musicians, scholars, educators, scientists, and even elected representatives. They are also asked to perform community service and attend cultural events as well as ceremonies held in their honor. Most importantly, during the National Recognition Program, the scholars make long lasting friendships and connections. The United States Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos announced the winners as the 55th class of Presidential Scholars. “I want to congratulate this year’s class of Presidential Scholars on their

achievement both inside of the classroom and out.” They consisted of 161 high school seniors from across the country who had shown excellence in academics, the

B’nai Abraham Rabbi Wins Star of Essex Award

By: Danielle Incognito abbi Clifford Kulwin, who currently occupies the pulpit of The Livingston Temple, B’nai Abraham since 1999, recently received the Star of Essex award during the Essex County Jewish Heritage celebration in Newark on Wednesday, May 29th. The event celebrated the positive impact Jewish community leaders have in Essex County. There, Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. presented Star of Essex Awards to Marsha Atkind, CEO/Executive Director for The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey and the Rabbi. Raised in Champaign, Illinois, Rabbi Kulwin graduated from Macalester College. Later, he was ordained and received his master’s degree from the Cincinnati campus of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion after studies there

and in Jerusalem and was a Doctoral Fellow in Jewish History at Columbia University. Once serving as a rabbi in Rio de Janeiro, he held close ties with the Brazilian-Jewish community there. He is also fluent in Portuguese, and he speak Spanish, Hebrew, and French. This multi-language speaking ability has helped his 15 years in the World Union for Progressive Judaism. Rabbi Kulwin will have served his congregation for twenty years at the end of June. He remarked, “I have been privileged to work on behalf of a cause that matters to me and that is integral to who I am, and to work with a community of people who could not have been nicer, warmer, or more fun to be a part of.” He is very well respected in the Jewish community, and his opinions have even been published in The Star Ledger and New Jersey Jewish News.

Serving the Jewish community has helped him. Besides helping to support his family, the job has help him on a personal level. He said, “If I had to choose, I guess it "helped" me especially in one key way: First, it gave me the privilege of working on behalf of causes in which I deeply believe, namely, the practice of Judaism and the promotion of Jewish life and the Jewish people.” He has also traveled to Israel with many young people, adults, and even families over his career. More importantly, Rabbi Kulwin knew the importance of the trip for the people who were seeing Israel for the first time or seeing it for the first time in a long while. He said, “Because of my belief that a connection to Israel is an integral part of being Jewish, it was a priority for me to help people create or enhance their own relationship with Israel.” He promoted summer stud-

American pet owners say one-third of their overall decision to move was related to their pets. What’s more, survey respondents cited a willingness to pay significantly more in living costs per month (32 percent) and even forgo perks like shorter commutes and updated kitchens in favor of pet-friendly features. Randolph Climbing Center Hosts Fundraiser No. 17 Vol. 1 for Epic Experience

n the evening of Saturday December 15, Randolph Climbing Center (RCC) hosted an event Climbing Beyond Cancer to fundraise for the organization Epic Experience. Epic Experience provides free weeklong adventure ex-

periences to adults who have been diagnosed with canacer. “Most organizations that existed at the time when Epic Experience was founded focused on kids or young adults. Epic Experience is the only one who does adults and all stages of Cancer, both

those currently in treatment and survivors,” says Sabine Schwab, who organized the event. Schwab, 36, of Roxbury, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2014 at age 32, shortly after giving birth to her daughter. Her tumor was about the size of a golf

ball. “I had open brain surgery, six weeks of daily radiation, and a year of chemotherapy,” says Schwab. She is a brain cancer survivor of almost five years now and devotes much of her time volunteering. “I have dedicated my life to the cancer community. I serve on various boards, and I’m a speaker and advocate in the brain tumor community,” says Schwab. Schwab a ttended an Epic Experience camp in May 2015. Schwab’s experience brought her white water rafting on the Colorado River, among other activities. “It’s not just the adventures that bring the healing,” says Schwab, “they also make time for group discussions with commonly shared fears and questions along the cancer journey.” Schwab joined the

Alumni Board of Epic Experience as an Outreach Specialist in June 2015. In 2017, she became the Alumni Team lead, and in 2018 joined the Board of Directors. Schwab enjoys climbing at Randolph Climbing Center and thought it would be the perfect place to fundraise for Epic
