The Kiwanis Club of Mount Olive Reaches Out to the Community

By Henry M. Holden he Kiwanis Club is a global volunteer organization that annually raises more than $100 million and dedicates more than 18 million service hours a year to help children.

The Kiwanis Club of Mt. Olive is one of thousands of Clubs in the United States with those same objectives. It evolved as an outgrowth of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. (JCC).

“Kiwanis is all about local communities, and how we can help local children and families and make an impact,” said Richard J. Moore, Jr. the current president.

Moore is a charter member of the Kiwanis club. He joined in 1995. “Over time

I became president. The first time was in 2000. I remained president for three years.” Moore was reelected to the presidency in 2009.

“The idea is to put people in leadership positions over time for a number of reasons. The first is to give other people the experience, and two, is for the life of the organization.

You want to have people ready who can do the job, or who have done the job.

The whole idea is to build on what has already been done.”

“The thought is that you train people to do jobs, and they stay on for the long run, so as the presidents change, there are people there who know how to do the job, but they are not in

“The benefit is that you’ve created a safe environment where you can say trick-or-treat for example. The kids are invited to come to the school in that safe environment and go from table to table to get some crafts or get some treats, that sort of thing. I think it’s much better and safer than having them banging on doors out in the street.”

DENTAL DIGEST Dental Bridges, Dentures, & Implants: What’s the Difference?

Ira Goldberg, DDS, FAGD, DICOI ery often, people need to replace missing teeth or teeth that will be extracted shortly. Bridges, dentures, and implants are the most common ways to accomplish this, but what are the differences?

The most common area of confusion lies between dentures and bridges. Dentures are removable: you take them in-and-out of your mouth. Bridges are permanent: you do NOT take them in-and-out.

Dentures come in two versions: “Full” (also known as “Complete”), and “Partial.”

A “Full” denture replaces all of the teeth in your jaw (no teeth remain), and a “Partial” denture is made with one or more of your teeth remaining.

These dentures can be made from a number of different materials: acrylic (plastic), metal, a combination of acrylic and metal, or a newer type of plastic called “thermoplastic.” The advantages of the acrylic include cost and simplicity. They are the least expensive, and the easiest to fabricate and repair. The disadvantages include thickness and stability: they require increased material thickness in order to provide strength, and they will be the loosest, meaning they will have the greatest tendency to move around in your mouth. The thickness can

interfere with speech.

Metal dentures are thin, rigid, and fit tightly. The downsides include increased difficulty to repair (although not terribly difficult) and cost (they are the most expensive).

Thermoplastic materials have the advantage of being flexible, which many patients find to be more comfortable. However, repairs can be difficult to impossible, based upon the type of material utilized.

Clasps are “arms” that extend off of a denture that help to keep the denture in place. The clasps can be metal, white to match teeth, or pink to match gums. No clasp is perfect, but they are a necessary component for denture stability, but the downside is potential esthetic complications if they show in your smile. If a clasp breaks off the denture, a repair is not always possible, and can render the denture fit unsatisfactory.

Unlike dentures that are removable, bridges are permanent. They are not removable. This is one reason why bridges are more popular than dentures. Other advantages include increased biting / chewing power, increased esthetics, and less fuss with them since they don’t have to be taken in and out. Downsides include the “shaving down” of teeth on either side of spaces

to keep them in place (called “abutment” teeth), and potential cavity development or need for root canals on these abutments over time.

Dental implants provide a host of options. Most people think of an implant as a post that is placed into the jawbone to hold a single tooth (crown). This is one use of an implant, but there are other functions. The implant is actually the post: you can use it to secure a denture or a bridge, also! With respect to dentures, the implant can help to eliminate or decrease the number of clasps, providing a more esthetic outcome and more stable set of teeth. Bridges benefit from implants because now you cannot develop cavities around the abutments and there is no need for root canals. Implant bridges also eliminate the need for drilling on other teeth.

A very common substitute or replacement for large partial dentures and full dentures is “All-On-Four®.” This revolutionary technology provides the patient with permanent, non-removable teeth in just a few appointments. Gone is the stigma and disappointment of removable teeth and poor chewing ability. n the seven presidential elections since 1992, the Republican presidential nominee has won the popular vote exactly once. The lone GOP candidate to receive a majority of the national vote was George W. Bush in 2004. Bush’s election-day victory over Democrat John Kerry, who had, in most observers’ views, “won” the debates between the two, was explained by the respected Democratic pollster Peter Hart: “Voters preferred I Like over IQ.” One test of deciding between presidential nominees is, “Who would you rather have a beer with?” which is another way of asking which White House challenger the voter personally likes more than the other. In short, our ballot for president is the most “personal” vote we Americans cast. Almost always, we pick the candidate with whom we are more comfortable and, more significantly, the candidate whose judgment and character we think we could depend upon in a personal crisis.

As evidence of the weight of the “I like” factor in presidential voting, let’s look at recent contests: In 2012, Barack Obama, the winner, was rated 52% personally favorable by voters, while Mitt Romney’s scores were 47% favorable and 50% unfavorable. In 2008, Americans had a rare positive choice. In the last Gallup poll before election day, John McCain was given a favorable rating by 57% of Americans and was barely eclipsed by Barack Obama’s 61% favorable score. In 2004, winner George W. Bush was 53% favorable among voters on election day, while John Kerry’s numbers were at 47%-51%. In 1992 and 1996, voters liked Democrat Bill Clinton more than they liked both then-President George H. W. Bush and Sen. Bob Dole. Of course, the outlier election was 2016, when both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump received historically low favorability scores. About

Mark Shields 1 in 5 voters rated both candidates unfavorably but, when forced to choose between the two, voted for Trump with 3-2 odds.

But what about the 2020 Outsider who’s on our living rooms TVs at every timeout of every game, at every commercial break between weather reports, news coverage and even during the Super Bowl? Former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, an authentic billionaire, is spending at a rate unprecedented in American politics. And it is paying off.

In most recent national polls, Bloomberg -- on the strength of his wall-to-wall media campaign -- has risen to double digits and as high as third place in some surveys.

We know that Michael Bloomberg has supported and spent generously to back candidates and initiatives that reflect his own priorities of gun control and climate change. In the eyes of some Democrats, Bloomberg’s political history -- his quarter-million-dollar gift to South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham; the more than $11 million the mayor donated in 2016 to Pennsylvania continued on page 6

Tyranny of the Tamiflunatics

eware of clickbait character assassins masquerading as “journalists.”

This is a lesson America should have learned after the mass media defamation of the Covington Catholic schoolboys last year. Just a few weeks ago, innocent teenager Nick Sandmann won a multimillion-dollar settlement against CNN for leaping to conclusions and attempting to ruin his life in pursuit of a political agenda driven by confirmation bias. The Washington Post and NBC News face similar lawsuits for potential damages totaling more than a half-billion dollars.

False allegations have consequences.

And yet, here we are again.

In Colorado last week, a young family was hurled into a national firestorm created by a single, powerful NBC News vigilante with an ideological ax to grind.

“Investigative reporter” Brandy Zadrozny lit the fuse on Feb. 6 with a Twitter post announcing that a 4-year-old had died of the flu. According to the Centers for Disease Control, an estimated 10,000 Americans (including nearly 70 children) have died of the flu this season. So what made this Colorado toddler’s tragic death newsworthy?

The NBC News journalist condemned the boy’s mom for having reached out to a Facebook health-centered parents’ group whose members recommended that she not give her child Tamiflu medicine that a pediatrician had prescribed.

Some commenters on the group had advised home remedies, including essential oils and vitamin C. Zadrozny linked to her incendiary hit piece on the mom and the “Stop Mandatory Vaccination” Facebook group, which was titled: “On Facebook, anti-vaxxers urged a mom not to give her son Tamiflu. He later died.”

The toxic inference is clear: “An-

Michelle Malkin ti-vaxxers” are guilty of spreading online “misinformation” that led the mom to withhold a purportedly life-saving modern medicine -- and Facebook is guilty for not stopping it.

Zadrozny is a self-anointed and self-appointed social media policewoman whose main focus is pressuring Facebook to shut down discussion groups she doesn’t like. She labels all vaccine skeptics as conspiracy theorists without refuting facts or responding to peer-reviewed journal citations and historical data. She uses her bully pulpit to harangue Facebook into censoring laypeople seeking alternatives to “mainstream” medicine.

Zadrozny quoted “experts” fretting about parents who discuss their objections to coercive mandates and missives of Big Pharma and Big Government. Her article sneered at “natural remedies.”

The magic words “anti-vaxx” triggered the Two Minutes Hate theater that sent “Tamiflu” trending on Twitter.

The nicer messages called for the boy’s grieving mom to be arrested and imprisoned. Many advocated that she continued on page 6

User Hayden chimed in: “She clearly should be executed, as should the person who posted the nonsense on FB, as well as anyone who liked said nonsense, ALL EXECUTED!!”

Zadrozny’s inciting tweet now has nearly 40,000 retweets, 5,000 comments and 72,000 likes.

Lost in all of these crazed point-andsputter diatribes were some pertinent, pesky facts.

“Investigative reporter” Zadrozny never actually interviewed the parents, Geneva Montoya and Najee Jackson Sr., and relied solely on the Facebook postings and information from their GoFundMe page without independently discovering whether they

But we do not know who Mike Bloomberg really is. Does he have a temper or a sense of humor? Can he laugh at himself? Would we want him as a neighbor? Can he personally ask the machinist in Dayton and her husband for their votes? Or is he a billionaire who, like so many people with money, is most comfortable surrounded by high-priced, professional bootlickers

who tell him how much smarter, more successful and more qualified he is to be president than anyone else?

Through his sophisticated and expensive TV and internet campaigns, we are learning what Mike Bloomberg wants us to know about him. What voters have yet to find out -- and will not know until he’s in the arena, mixing it up with the other Democrats and on the debate stage -- is whether we will like Mike.

had changed course after Montoya had commented to the Facebook group. Nor did she independently verify whether the parents were “anti-vaxx” or what vaccines besides the controversial flu vaccine (whose effectiveness has been challenged worldwide by health officials) they had chosen to avoid. A local television station, however, did the reporting Zadrozny failed to do.

It turns out the entire family, except for 4-year-old Najee Jr., had been suffering from influenza B. A 10-month-old brother who had been running a high fever had been seen at my neighborhood Children’s Hospital in Colorado Springs the afternoon before Najee Jr. fell ill. Montoya told Fox31 TV in Colorado Springs: “We called the doctors. We called the hospital. We gave them the medicine we were instructed to give.

We did everything.”

Those who have already prejudged the mom respond that she must be lying. What if she is telling the truth? And why hadn’t Zadrozny updated her story as of Feb. 11? I asked the online social media monitor that question publicly on Twitter, but she failed to respond by my deadline.

More to the point, it’s quackery to suggest that Tamiflu would have saved Najee Jr.’s life. The respected Cochrane researchers in Britain have concluded there is no

evidence the medicine reduces mortality or hospitalizations. In 2006, the FDA updated the Tamiflu label indicating that it could cause psychiatric problems. Japan banned Tamiflu for teenagers amid concerns about deleterious side effects.

Just days before Zadrozny crucified Najee Jr’s family, a Denver mom publicly warned that her 8-year-old daughter suffered hallucinations from Tamiflu. Earlier this week, a 16-year-old girl in Leesburg, Va. with the flu died of cardiac arrest. She had been prescribed Tamiflu. Another 16-yearold in Ohio died of the flu last month after suffering a stroke. She, too, had been prescribed Tamiflu.

Their cases didn’t make NBC News headlines, because they don’t fit the dissent-squelching narrative. Tamiflunatics, vaccine bullies and their media gatekeepers spread misinformation that destroys lives.

They are the true public health threats.

continued from front page activities director about trying to get it going. It’s a challenge because we have to go through the Board of Education. Any kind of youth group needs an advisor and he or she has to get paid. The Board has to approve monies to support that advisor, along with the financial requirements. So as is, it has been a challenge.”

Kiwanis is always marketing to bring in new members. “We basically market new members by going out and talking to everybody we know,” said Moore. “We use social media like Facebook, and Twitter to reach out. It’s just a matter of asking enough people questions. Sooner or later we reach the people who are interested. Our mission is to create community leaders, one student, and one project at a time.”

The safe trick-or-treat is just one example of Kiwanis teaching the students on how to manage those projects where everybody benefits.

“We have students who were involved in these programs and have gone on to become physicians, marine biologists, chemical engineers, lawyers, and more.

The fact that they get involved gives them motivation and they feel better about themselves. They can accomplish the goals that they set for themselves.

John Dewey, an American philosopher said, “We do not learn from experience.

We learn from reflecting on experience.”

“Reflection is a critical part of any service project. It gives our members a chance to process what they learned from the experience and to think about what they can do moving

forward. The impact of reflection leads to greater self-confidence, stronger problem-solving skills and an increased connection between members.”

The Kiwanis is best known for their signature projects. “It’s best to have a signature project and we have two,” said Moore.

“One, we support the local pantry in Mount Olive.

We’ve established regular food donation sites to support the Food Pantry. We pick up the food from 17 different locations every day, 365 days a year, with buckets or boxes of food for the Christ Episcopal Church Pantry in Mount Olive. I think our signature project is a win-win for business because when a business sponsors a bucket (of food) we put out press releases on a regular basis to let everybody know where the continued on page 8

Kiwanis Club... continued from page 7 food is coming from, and the business locations. The business gets free press because their location is in the press release. It could draw people to their establishment looking for a place to drop off food or buy their product or service.”

“The second signature project is the Santa House I started as a Junior Chamber of Commerce (JCC) project. It is spreading joy to hundreds of children during our annual Santa House event.”

The Santa House happens every weekend after Thanksgiving Day. “This year we had four weeks with 16 shifts, of volunteers serving three hours apiece.

Our volunteers did everything.”

In 1995, the JCC started an Easter Egg Hunt. And that project was carried over into the Kiwanis as

well as the annual Easter egg hunt the members used to do.

“We reached a point where we were giving out 14,000 eggs,” said Moore.

“It was becoming overwhelming so we ultimately gave that to the Key Club so that they could do it inside no matter what the weather. When we did it at the park, we charged an entrance fee of five dollars per child, and they could pick up as many eggs as they wanted. Sometimes we would put prizes like a coupon for a stuffed animal, or some other prize such as a piece of candy within the egg.”

“We had great participation because we had some Aktion Club people and some young people around 12 or 14 joined in the fun.

It is now sponsored indoors by the high schoolers.”

About seven years ago, Moore’s wife Kelly, started a project called Caring with

Bears. Its intent is to provide comfort to children in traumatic situations.

“Caring with Bears is designed to give out stuff bears to children who had been in a distressed situation, perhaps at home, or they were on their way to a hospital, or where there was a police investigation or there was something going on with the child’s life that was making him or her feel anxious or uncomfortable,” said Moore. “The police or the EMTs actually give out bears when they go to the residence.”

To date, the Kiwanis has given out over 300 bears.

“We usually give the bears out in bulk of 50. To date Hackettstown Regional Medical Center received 50, Saint Clare’s in Denville got 50, Flanders First Aid and EMTs got a total of 100 (in two batches of 50) Budd Lake First Aid got 50, and the police department got 50.”

The Kiwanis also gives out two $500 scholarships to high school students each year. Up until recently it was anybody in the high school, but that had to change because the volume of applicants increased dramatically. The plan for the future is to give scholarships to only Key Club members. “It has become so popular that it’s taken us five hours to review 32 applicants.”

Although serving local communities is their focus, on an International level, Kiwanis’ is part of a global campaign for children, called “The Eliminate Project”. It is Kiwanis’ aim to eliminate maternal/neonatal tetanus. Its goal is to raise $110 million and save the lives of a 129 million mothers and their future babies. In partnership with UNICEF, Kiwanis is committing to eliminating a disease that kills one baby every nine minutes.

By: Melissa A. Kay ount Olive Township is fortunate to have Councilman Alex Roman representing its residents for the past 12 years. The most recent census demographic data indicates a population of 28,869 in Mount Olive, according to Town Charts. Having recently been reelected for his fourth term last November, it is evident that the people of Mount Olive are impressed with Roman and what he has accomplished for the community as Councilman.

Roman is committed to improving the lives of those he serves, and his passion and perseverance are unwavering. With 12 years as Councilman under his belt, Roman understands better than most that having a “thick skin” is much-needed when dealing with the ins-and-outs of the everyday, but his care and compassion are just as important when dealing with the public and the many pressures the political world can bring. His well-balanced attitude gets him through the long days, and knowing he is making a difference keeps him hanging in there and holding himself up to the high standards he has set for himself.

man has owned an auto repair shop in town for more than 17 years. He is an ASE certified Master Technician. Roman is highly involved in the Mount Olive community, which comes as no surprise.

He shares, “I served on the Mount Olive Township Zoning Board of Adjustment and the Mount Olive Township Recreation Committee, I also served on the Mount Olive Jr. Marauders Football Board as well as a coach. I was also a coach with the Mount Olive Junior Marauders Softball.” Plenty of folks who live in Mount Olive have gotten to know Roman personally through such engagements and endeavors, and his constant participation has aided his efforts to connect with the community on a face-toface, person-to-person level. It is this sort of personal interaction that makes being Councilman such a connected position.

Roman values the relationships he has made over the years, and there are always new people to reach out to.

It has been a long journey for Roman, and his upbringing, skills, smarts, and motivation have led him to where he is today. He was born in Colombia and immigrated to the United States at the tender age of five. Roman grew up in Elizabeth, New Jersey along with his brother. They

were raised by their single mother who did everything she could for her sons. She worked tirelessly during the day and went to school at night to advance her education. Her commendable work-ethic and commitment to her family set the tone for Roman to take in and apply to his own life.

Roman says of his mother, “Her example showed me what hard work and perseverance can do to affect positive change in one’s life. She is my role model.” With such a strong and selfless woman teaching her sons what success means, Roman took the reins and realized his own path towards making change for the better. He attended Rutgers University-New Brunswick, and from there, eventually got into the automotive field and became a key figure in Mount Olive.

Mount Olive has been the place Roman has called home for the past 25+ years, “because I knew that this was a better place to raise my children,” he explains.

He has four, now-grown children, three daughters and one son, ranging in age from 20-30. Two grandchildren, ages 5 and 7 make the family even brighter. Roman and his wife Lourdes, a nursing educator, love to travel, so hopefully they are able to do so when time allows. With Roman’s

Roman enjoys working alongside Mayor Rob Greenbaum (he says he “feels lucky” to do so) as well as the “great group” of fellow Councilmembers he collaborates with on a regular basis. On a much grander, yet personal scale, Roman reveals, “I am grateful to live in a country that has provided me so many blessings and opportunities.” Roman’s life could have been far different had his family not moved to America. He must reflect on that when he takes pride in his home.

Roman’s desire to make a difference in the Mount Olive community never slumps or slows down. He thrives on helping others and handling matters in a swift and successful fashion. When Roman is able to resolve residents’ issues, no matter the level of complexity, he finds this to be the most rewarding aspect of his role as Councilman. Big or small, when a resident is aided in some way by the efforts Roman is able to afford them, the positive outcome is applauded by all. It gives residents peace of mind knowing that someone is looking out for their best interests, especially

when they’ve had hardships or hassles in the past.

“Adding various recreation improvements throughout the township is the most visible of the things I have done during my tenure, including Mount Playmore at Turkey Brook Park.” Residents who spend time in Budd Lake with their families are surely appreciative of the actions made by Roman to make such improvements. Roman is also interested in road improvement. Keeping roads well-maintained and safe for drivers is essential.

“We have increased our budget to improve our infrastructure without increasing municipal taxes.” That is certainly news the people of Mount Olive love to hear.

As expected, things do not always run smoothly or as expected. It’s part of life in general, and as Councilman. As much as Roman puts in the hours of work, there are times when things just don’t go as planned.

It can be frustrating, but he is always up for the challenge. As an example, Roman explains, “The most stressful aspect of my job is the State of New Jersey. I have tried for years to add a boardwalk to Budd Lake along Route 46 but the state has impeded every effort.” Hopefully Roman is able to win them over, along with the support of his constituents who agree with his ideas.

Roman intends to serve the residents of Mount Olive “for as long as they’ll have me.” At this rate, with 12+ years behind him, it looks like he is a keeper! Broadening his reach and impacting even more people in Mount Olive are on Roman’s mind. County and state politics are of interest to him as well, but he does realize

the major commitment would take away from time with his family and his local business. Perhaps he will reconsider his stance sometime down the road.

A go-getter and action-oriented type of person, Roman “would much rather get involved than sit on the sidelines and complain.” This is what makes him such an eager and effective Councilman for Mount Olive. His sage advice for others? “Take as many risks in life as you possibly can and always plan for the future without sacrificing the present and those around you. Life is too short and this world is too big to not enjoy as much of it as possible.” Smart and solid statements, and ones that Roman takes to heart.

Roman enjoys meeting the friendly people of Mount Olive, so if you see him around, do say hello. Talk to him about your concerns for the community or just chit-chat. He would be more than happy to share his experiences with the residents and get your take on what can be done to improve Mount Olive even more. Mount Olive Police Bid Farewell to Lt. Craig Austenberg

ount Olive Police Lieutenant Craig Austenberg hung up his uniform on Feb. 28 after serving over 30 years with the police department. Austenberg graduated from the Morris County Police Academy in Dec. 1989 and has served in a variety of roles including patrolman, patrol sergeant, patrol division commander, commander and detective lieutenant in the investigations division, and commander and lieutenant in the support services division.

While serving in the department, Austenberg has been a D.A.R.E. officer,

field training officer, Morris County Rapid Deployment Team member, internal affairs unit supervisor, and even responded to New Orleans as part of the Louisiana Emergency Assistance Deployment team after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Austenberg has many advanced trainings and tools from his time at the Mount Olive police department. He graduated from the prestigious Northwestern University Traffic Institute, School of Police Staff and Command. He also attended the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police West Point Command and Leadership Pro-

gram.

While a member of the department, Austenberg was the man behind Mount Olive Police’s fist ever website and he initiated the Pink Patch and Autism Patch program. He also led a team of officers to provide gifts to children hospitalized during the holidays at Goryeb Children’s Hospital.

He has earned three Knights of Columbus Shield Awards, the Meritorious Service Award, Life Saving Awards, Exceptional Duty Awards, Grand Cordon Awards, an Honorable Service Award, an Educational Achievement Award, Physical Fitness Award, and a

Church Pantry Gets Revitalized: Pantry in the Glen

By Elsie Walker he Stanhope United Methodist Church in Netcong is also known as the “Church in the Glen”, and its bell choir is known as the “Bells of the Glen”. Recently, another part of the church took “the glen” name: “Pantry in the Glen”. The church has had a pantry for many years, but it has now upgraded that to better address the needs of those it serves. The upgrade grew out of a United Methodist program called “Team Vital”.

Church members Linda White, Carol and Walt Scheese, Bob Denner, Kristen Ransiear, Cathy Rinko, and Lynn Gremmo, plus Pastor Lynn Zaremba make up the church’s Team Vital committee. The program asks churches to look at five areas of “vitality” (Worship, Making Disciples, Small Groups, Mission, and Giving) and to develop a tentative action plan for each one, then choose one to focus upon.

“After looking at the community demographics and meeting with town officials, we saw a need to expand our food pantry so that our church could further extend its outreach into the communities it serves,” said White of Stanhope.

“The food pantry was begun back in the late 1970's when Rev William Edsall was our pastor. He and Marion Rush began it. Donations were from church members, scout troops and post office food drives, and we couldn't have done it without NORWESCAP, whom we still purchase food from,” explained church Trustees President, Amanda Rush of Netcong. She also noted the on-going support of [Netcong] ShopRite’s Partners in Caring program.

The old pantry was in a small space in the church, with no refrigeration, so only non-perishables were available.

Volunteers bagged food and gave it to clients. However, when a room which had been used for a nursery became available, members of the church s Team Vital committee started to envision how that space could be transformed into a new pantry which could better serve those already using the pantry, plus help more people.

The pantry was moved from its old space to the new one in August 2019; initial funding came from a variety of sources. After first using a donated refrigerator, a new full refrigerator and new full freezer were able to be purchased for the pantry through a $1500 grant from the Team Vital program which is sponsored by the church conference, the United Methodist Church of Greater New Jersey. Also, new shelves were donated by a member of the church. A grant from Walmart and donations from Shop Rite Partners in Caring, Netcong Township and a local book club were used to provide nutritional foods for the pantry clients.

The pantry now offers more than non-perishables and allows the client to pick out what they want from what’s available.

Described as the driving force for the expanded pantry, Rinko, of Rockaway, has been instrumental in getting fresh foods and non-perishables for it donated by a number of businesses, organizations, and local groups. Also, the congregation donates food for the pantry, not only at the holidays, but throughout the year.

Since the new pantry has opened, it has seen an increase in the number of clients served: from 4-5 per month to 42 per month. It gave out 22 Thanksgiving baskets and 23 Christmas Baskets (a combined church and pantry mission).

Walt Scheese, of Byram, said: “We find that the clients are very happy about the changes that we have made.

We have decided to highlight for the congregation different items each month that can be donated to the pantry, mainly items that we cannot get from other sources.”

In late 2019, the church held a contest to name the new pantry. Recently, the winning name was announced: “Pantry in the Glen”.

The pantry is operated by a volunteer staff, and new volunteers are always welcome. The Pantry in the Glen is open on the first and third Thursdays of each month.

Pantry hours are 10 a.m. to 12 noon and by appointment throughout the month. Zaremba, a committee member or the church secretary will serve clients if they are made aware of a need. Volunteers also make deliveries to homebound clients.

Dance Student Takes First Place in Worldwide Competition

orth Jersey School of Dance Arts (NJSDA) announced that one of their students, Maya Papendick (10) of Stanhope, NJ, took first place at the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) competition in the pre-competitive Classical category.

YAGP is one of the most prestigious dance competitions in the world. Now in its 20th season, it’s open to male and female dancers ages 9-19 in 3 age categories: Pre-competitive (9-11) Junior (12-14) and Senior (15-19).

In each category dancers can compete in the contemporary and/or classical competition.

“YAGP was a wonderful experience,” said Papendick.

“I feel I learned so much, and I know it will help me grow as a dancer."

Papendick began training at the Hackettstown-based NJSDA at the age of three. The last two consecutive years she played the coveted role of Clara in New Jersey Civic Youth Ballet’s (NJCYB) production of The Nutcracker and she danced at the American Ballet Theater Summer Intensive in NYC. This year she was accepted into the School of American Ballet's Summer Intensive.

Among ten students invited by NJSDA to participate in the Philadelphia regional semi-final, Papendick performed the Swanhilda variation from Coppelia. This is known in the industry as a difficult variation, especially for someone of such a young age. Papendick’s performance showcased a combination of her dance strengths and her acting skills

with a short acting scene halfway through the variation.

To achieve this level of skill, Papendick increased her busy 13-plus hours per week regimen by another full hour. The two-minute variation was her only time in front of the judges, earning her first 1st place among the 31 dancers in her category.

“This is a major accomplishment for someone Maya’s age and I am immensely proud of her,” said Alex Thorpe, Co-Owner/Co-Director of NJSDA. “It was an honor to coach her in the four months leading up to the competition. She worked so hard to perfect every little detail of the variation and it paid off. She truly deserved to win!"

Papendick has one more year to compete at this level.

The regional finals are held worldwide throughout the year culminating in finals to take place in New York City in April 2020. Papendick’s score did not automatically qualify her to participate in the finals yet she may still receive an invitation to compete.

A second NJSDA student who participated in the competition, Sophia Musal, 14, of Mount Olive also received accolades from the judges. Although she did not place in the junior category, at the judges’ recommendation, Musal earned a spot in the Bolshoi Ballet Academy Summer Intensive which provides expert training for serious ballet students ages 9-14.

Hackettstown Police Sergeant Pays It Forward at Local Blood Drive that Saved his Life

By Jillian Risberg onors showed up in force on Jan. 25 at the Miller Street Firehouse to help a cop and two students fight cancer. A total of 162 units were donated at the Hackettstown Blood Drive.

When Det. Sgt. Aaron Perkins was first diagnosed in 2019 with cancer, if not for the community’s generosity, his future was looking a lot more uncertain.

“After seeing the amount of blood (transfusions) doctors gave me to stabilize and recover, it reminded me how important it is for blood donors,” the police sergeant says.

“Without them, I wouldn't be here today. I knew I needed to pay it forward.”

So the Hackettstown-Mansfield PBA-local 369 dove right in by organizing a blood drive at the Miller Street Firehouse on Jan. 25.

Perkins says he never expected such significant blood loss after his surgery for renal carcinoma, the most common type of (adult) kidney cancer — that accounts for about 90 percent of cancerous tumors.

Blood products expire quickly — with a shelf life of only up to 42 days. So regularly replenishing the supply is imperative.

That wasn’t a problem, with enthusiastic participation; including the mayor, friends, neighbors and even strangers who wanted to help.

“I was extremely surprised,” Perkins says. “Having never arranged an event like this, I was extremely grateful at the amount of support and turnout from everyone. This by far was most heartwarming.”

According to Public Information Officer Darren Tynan, the event was a huge success.

“We had a goal of 100 and we exceeded that,” the public information officer says. “It was great to see people coming from all over the area to support the blood drive.”

The police bond is like no other, profoundly affecting all of them when they find out one of their own is dealing with cancer.

“It hits you hard when you hear one of your brothers or sisters are sick,” Tynan says. “We all wanted to help him get through this and help his family.”

And Perkins has always done his best to be there for them whenever possible.

“To see them respond and give blood just shows how much we look out for each other,” he says. “I’m very thankful how our PBA is always looking to help the community.”

Through the detective’s health issues, they have continually checked up on him.

“Whether it was a phone call, text, or stopping by that really helped me to remain positive,” Perkins says.

According to the detective, after being sidelined from work for almost five months — he is doing better now.

“My treatment plan is regular visits with doctors to see how my body is recovering and to make sure there isn't any recurrence,” Perkins says. "I’m looking forward to a full recovery and for a long life ahead of me.”

Tynan says they definitely plan on holding future blood drives.

And to all the community members who showed up on a wintry Saturday to aid the detective, along with Molly Gorczyca, a Hackettstown High School alum and Maddy Holloway, from Hackettstown Middle School, in their cancer battle— Perkins can’t thank them enough.

“To see such an outpouring of support and to hear so many positive statements, hugs, and well-wishes really made the day,” he says. “I love how they came together to assist others, even people they didn't know. It reminded me how proud I am to be working for this community.”

Hackettstown, Ireland Resident Grand Marshal of Hackettstown, NJ Parade

By Elsie Walker hen Joe Barnes describes his hometown of Hackettstown, he shares that it is a place with just a little industry, mostly farming, and a population of around 900 people. If that doesn’t sound like Hackettstown, New Jersey, that’s because it isn’t. Barnes, who is retired, lives in Hackettstown, Ireland.

However, in the 1990s, Barnes made a connection with the town in New Jersey bearing the same name as his home.

Since then, he’s visited many times, and participated in 10 of the New Jersey town’s St. Patrick’s Day parades. This year, Barnes will be there again, only this time he’ll have a special role. The Hackettstown Business Improvement District (BID) has named Barnes the Grand Marshall of its 12th annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. This year the parade is Sunday, March 15th with the step-off at 3:30pm.

“I am overwhelmed [to have] been asked to be Grand Marshal. I am excited, a little nervous, and I will make every effort to try and match all the previous marshals. Three of my four daughters are coming to the parade reception and parade itself. One of my girls lives with her family in Boston, Massachusetts. After the parade, I will travel up with her. I will be there for March 17th; later

that week, we go on vacation to Mexico,” said Barnes.

To give a little more insight into what his Hackettstown is like, Barnes shared a tale from the 1950s: Author Harold J. Nunn was writing a history of the New Jersey Hackettstown, called The People of Hackettstown. He decided to include something on the town in Ireland that bore the same name. He wrote to the mayor of the Ireland town explaining he wanted to include something on it in his book.

“But there was no mayor here nor will there ever be, but the postmistress here knowing there was no mayor, she opened the letter and she replied to him giving details of the town at that time. It was the year of 1954 and that letter she wrote is in the book. [Nunn] also included that the first female judge appointed in the U.S.A came from here. Her name was Mary O’Toole,” said Barnes.

The Hackettstown in Ireland knew of the U.S. town that shared its name, but how did it happen that Barnes started coming to visit it?

“Back in 1995 when I was the fire chief here in town (Ireland) I received a note from Mr. Jeff Saunders of the Hackettstown New Jersey department informing me that the

fire department was holding its 120th anniversary parade in June 1997. I replied to say I was interested in going, and in 1996 got the invitation and accepted. So in June 1997 was my first visit to Hackettstown. Since then I have been many times, and in 2009, I was invited to attend the first St Patrick’s parade,” he shared.

At that first St. Patrick’s Day parade, Barnes was driven along the parade route in a vintage fire truck of the Hackettstown NJ Fire department. Since then, he’s come back again to participate in the parade. At first, he walked behind a banner stating he was a special guest from Hackettstown, Ireland.

“For the last few years, as I am not young anymore, I have been driven in an open top car, again [with] the banner up front and the BID gave me a sash to wear saying ‘Hackettstown Ireland’” said Barnes.

This year, as Grand Marshal, “Joe will be riding in the seagrave fire truck,” shared Jim Sheldon, Executive Director of the Hackettstown BID. Sheldon went on to share why Barnes was selected to be Grand Marshal, “Joe was selected to be Grand Marshal because of his dedication and commitment to Hackettstown and our St. Patrick’s Parade. He is a wonderful person and deserves to be recognized. This year the dates of our parade and

New York City’s Parade are close together, which allows those from Ireland visiting New York City’s Parade to visit our parade as well.”

Excited about being Grand Marshal, Barnes ended by sharing what has kept him coming back to Hackettstown, N.J. all these years: “It’s very simple. I love the town, the people, the area, my friends there who I count as my best friends and I will continue to go as long as I am able and the people want me to.”

Budd Lake Woman Turns to Art to Help Animals in Australia

By Dawn M. Chiossi hen Budd Lake artist and animal lover Tina Bernabe-Reyes heard about the countless animals perishing in the recent wildfires plaguing Australia, she was not only deeply troubled but energized to help.

“I kept watching the news about the awful fires in Australia and when I saw the injured koala’s trying to escape... it broke my heart,” Reyes says. “Images of kangaroos fleeing for their lives was a lot to take in. So many needed care to hopefully return to the wild again.”

She immediately thought of Wildlife Warriors, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and championing animals.

“My son loved watching Steve Irwin growing up and they have done so much for wildlife over the years,” she shares. “Now these terrible wildfires over there…. what better way to give back. They are an inspiring group of people,” Reyes enthuses.

Turning to her artistic talents and passion for art, Reyes decided to sell her work on eBay as a kind of raffle to raise funds for Wildlife Warriors and animal protection. Ultimately, she decided to transfer her efforts to GoFundMe instead when she had no response with eBay. In just a matter of weeks, she created a unique drawing done in pastels of one of Australia’s signature animals--the kangaroo. Fully framed and matted, Reyes calls her creation “Wattle” after Australia’s national flower.

So far, in the time that “Wattle” has been on GoFundMe, the drawing has raised approximately $120 of Reyes’ $500 goal.

Reyes discloses that she discovered her passion for art during her childhood. “Most of my childhood was spent at Shriners Hospital in Philadelphia because I was born with multiple disabilities. Being in the hospital for a week to maybe a month at a time I just started drawing to pass the time,” she shares.

Studying art, entering contests, even selling pieces, Reyes explains that she has explored all mediums of art in its various forms, but it’s pictures of animals that she enjoys creating the most. “It’s when people wanted me to draw their dogs because they passed away is where I thought I could bring a smile back to their faces,” she says.

It was a sentiment that she tries to capture in all of her artwork. Reyes explains that she had been inspired to create “Wattle” upon seeing other artist’s drawings of Koala Bears in their own efforts to raise money for this worthwhile cause.

She decided to go her own way, drawing a kangaroo.

In this donation with a twist event, Reyes explains that for every person that donates, their names will be entered in a random name generator to win this drawing.

I hope a lot of the animals will get the care they need and rebuild some of the habitats that were lost,” Reyes asserts.

When asked if she plans to do more for charities, the answer was a resounding yes.

“I’m planning to draw more wildlife and sell prints to which I’ll donate part of those to different charities here as well and around the world, every little bit helps. I just hope that people will buy my prints and pay it forward. I just love drawing and if I can create something that people love and give a little back, why not?”

Super Bowl Champion Lee Rouson Tackles Other Community Challenges

By Steve Sears or 57-year-old Flanders resident Cecil Lee Rouson, it’s about one primary thing.

“I have the opportunity to serve the community.”

His name may sound familiar, and here’s why. Rouson played for seven seasons in the National Football League, primarily under Head Coach Bill Parcells for the New York Giants, winning two Super Bowl titles with the club and garnering an NFL Special Teams Player of the Year honor in 1986.

The above being said, which would be quite a life for most, the Elizabeth City, North Carolina native realizes that the football victories, the championships, goals attained on the gridiron, are just a small part of his life’s path.

In addition to being a Running Back and Special Teams coach for Mount Olive High School’s first state championship football team in 2004, in 2013 he started working for Mount Olive Township School District, and did so until 2017. He served as an aide in the alternative classroom in the high school, but his main purpose was creating a pilot program for behavior modification for grades 6 – 8. “The pur-

pose was to engage them and equip them for the positive things in life and encourage them,” he recalls.

Rouson was an 8th round draft choice by the Giants in 1985 out of the University of Colorado. He saw limited action in his first season, but in 1986, he appeared in 14 games on special teams, and backed up popular running back, Joe Morris. His season stats read 179 yards on 54 carries and eight pass receptions for 121 yards.

He scored three touchdowns that season and remained with the Giants through 1990, and then suffered a career-ending ankle injury while a member of the Cleveland Browns in 1991.

Rouson occasionally does outreach for Sports World Ministries, travelling to schools and churches around the United States, and currently serves on the Board of the northern New Jersey Chapter for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He also collaborates with local Mountaintop Church and sings often as part of worship there. “A Giant on the field has become a giant off the field for the kingdom of God!" says Pastor Matt Jones, who lauds Rouson’s lyrical voice. “It has been an honor and a blessing to work with Lee Rouson on many levels, as he has a deep

Joe De Lois, Founding Member of Budd Lake First Aid Squad, Dies at 95

oseph (Joe) Anthony De Lois, 95, of Youngsville, N.C., passed away peacefully in his home just after midnight on January 24th. He was surrounded by love.

Joseph was born in Binghamton, NY on December 5, 1924 the son of Anthony and Antoinette De Lousia.

He was predeceased by five

sisters, Josephine, Rose, Julia, Elizabeth and Lucy his brother, Dominic and his daughter, Anita.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Eleanor De Lois (Haase) and his children. Lorraine De Lois of Youngsville, NC, John De Lois of Budd Lake, NJ, Mary De Lois of New Gretna, NJ, his grandson, Jonathan De

Lois of Fredon, NJ, along with several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Joe was a life member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Disabled American Veterans. He served as a founding member of the Budd Lake First Aid Squad for twenty years and 35

years as a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was the operator of the Cozy Drive-In locate in Netcong NJ an establishment owned by his in-laws, John and Anna Haase. Joe was also a member of the Budd Lake Bow and Gun Club.

At the age of 16 Joe enlisted in the Navy. On December 7, 1941 he found himself right in the middle of the attack on Pearl Harbor at the age of 17. After the war he received an

appointment as a police officer for the city of Binghamton, NY. When the Korean War broke out he was called to active duty again where he enlisted in the US Army. He left active service in 1958 but continued as First Sergeant in the National Guard Tank Company, part of the 44th Division, a position he held until he retired in 1984. Joseph served his country in uniform for 43 years.

Mount Olive High School Junior Collects Shoes for Sierra Leone

By Steve Sears amila Forero, a Mount Olive High School junior, for eight months searched for a worthwhile fundraiser to work with.

“I was unsuccessful with a lot of different attempts that I made,” she says.

Then Forero heard about “Young Vision Africa” (YVA) courtesy of one of the volunteer group’s leadership members, who is a close friend of her Mom. Forero visited the website, approached YVA, and the marriage was made.

Forero, who was born and raised in the early part of her life in the country of Colombia, was trying to find a fundraiser to support the poverty-stricken children in Sierra Leone, one of the world’s poorest countries, for YVA. The latter had built a school for the children, and Forero wanted to fund their learning and buy the school textbooks. She was able to find a company that donates money to charitable organizations that can gather used pairs of shoes.

With help, she collected 2,325 pairs of shoes.

“After eight months she hit up on the shoe thing, and it just took off. It just really clicked with our organization,” says YVA founder Alan Chorun. YVA had started a vacation bible school in the country, and also raised money to build houses. When hearing from an orphan in the land that nothing in Sierra Leone would change unless the kids there went to school, and that for some schooling ended at the end of 6th grade, Chorun and his group acted and built a school building. “When the kids said that, they put me on to the idea to educate those kids in the village. One thing led to another.”

Then came the need for textbooks – and enter Forero.

Regarding her ambition and dedication, Chorun says, “She spent a lot of time not giving up.”

For Forero, in addition to her fundraising deed, there were the leadership skills learned, and being educated about different cultures and how the children are raised,

especially in Sierra Leone. “I was able to compare it to my old country.” She immigrated to the United States when she was just 1-year-old, but still visits her original homeland (“I’ve lived a good portion of my life here and a good portion there”). “There’s an insane amount of differences (between Colombia and the United States),” she explains.

“I mean, people ask you for money there at every single stop light, and you see little kids – actual 4-year-old little kids – asking you to give them money because they’re on the streets. It’s kind of hard to say no to them because being from here (the United States) you’re not used to seeing that.”

Forero plans on majoring in Biochemistry in college, so she can eventually become a doctor and take her skills to third world countries and help people. In fact, her

summertime Colombia treks are spent aiding her Great Aunt with her physical therapy practice, getting an overview of treatments and care. “The more I see it makes me more motivated to want to do these things. The people that have the least amount of money are the people most grateful to you. Just to talk to them and listen to the problems they’re having…I’ve never seen people with such great smiles by you just telling them you’re going to try and help.” She then continues, “I want to be able to go there and help, so people can have a good doctor to assure that they can have a good quality of life and don’t have to deal with the uncertainty of something going wrong.”

Eagle Scout Beautifies Maier’s Pond

F

or Anthony Rocco, earning the rank of Eagle Scout is a proud privilege. In the fall of 2019, Rocco took on a challenging Eagle Scout project at Mount Olive’s Maier’s Pond. You’ll find a new section of benches, a picnic table, mulching, and more when you take a visit. Rocco pieced all those moving parts together in three days with the help of other scouts, township workers, family, and friends.

“Just stick to it,” Rocco says about advice for younger scouts who may be looking up to him. “I’ve had a vision ever since I was young that I wanted to do something like what I’ve done. I was passionate about it and be able to give back to the community that is interactive. I had that vision and I went for it and I accomplished it.” Rocco said.

Rocco, a junior at Mount Olive High School, tried to pick an Eagle Scout Project that would help beautify the town, but something that not only himself, but anyone who visits the pond could use and enjoy. Rocco has since brought friends and family to visit the popular fishing hole.

“Leadership is powerful and it’s powerful when you utilize it and enforce it. There’s so many ways to use leadership to an advantage. To be able to have self-motivation to do something like this, it’s amazing.” Rocco said.

While his official Eagle Scout Court of Honor hasn’t taken place just yet, he is excited to join the ranks of the Mount Olive Eagle Scouts who have come before him.

By Richard Mabey Jr. ome of the most endearing memories of my Dad are of the times when he served as a Sexton at the Boonton United Methodist Church. Dad loved his church. He dedicated over a decade of his life to cleaning and maintaining his beloved church.

Dad began serving as the Church Sexton in the Summer of 1981. At the time, Dad was still working as a long distance truck driver. Generally speaking, on Wednesday evenings after supper, Dad would climb into his little Ford Ranger pickup truck and drive off to the church to clean it. I often went with Dad. I really don't know how my father did it all. When he started working as a Sexton he was 53 years old. I would often see the fatigue in Dad's eyes as he drove down Route 202, on his way to the church.

Dad would put in two to three hours of cleaning time on Wednesday nights. Then on Saturday mornings, he would get up early and eat breakfast. I often got up early on Saturday mornings, to help him clean the church. Right after breakfast we would make sandwiches. Then, throw in a couple

of apples with a few oatmeal cookies in little brown bags. We would make tea and coffee at the church, for our lunch break.

When we got to the church, Dad and I would start vacuuming and scrubbing. I was always amazed at how hard my Dad worked. Dad was an incredibly hard working man. He truly loved his church. Dad did get paid for being the Church Sexton. I don't think he reported to the Minister, even half of the hours he worked. It was Dad's way of giving of himself to the Lord.

Dad retired as a long distance truck driver in June of 1989. To my amazement, Dad then devoted even more time to the cleaning and the upkeep of his church. Thus, donating a lot more hours of labor to the church.

Dad served as Sexton of the Boonton United Methodist Church till the Summer of 1992. His bout with prostate cancer, made it nearly impossible for him to carry on his duties as Church Sexton.

In the Spring of 1987, Reverend Leon Weaver presented Dad with the well earned God and Country Award. This is an award given by both the United Methodist Church and the Boy Scouts of America. Dad

Healthy Eating Options for Seniors

et food be thy medicine” is a quote attributed to Hippocrates, the ancient scholar considered to be the father of modern medicine. The saying relates to the notion that what people put in their bodies can heal and/or prevent certain conditions.

For seniors with medicine cabinets full of over-thecounter and prescription medications, the idea of relying predominantly on food to promote optimal health may be tempting, and various foods can be particularly useful to the 50-and-over demographic.

According to the World Health Organization, poor diet is a major contributor to many of the diseases that affect older people. Poor diet has been connected to the development of diabetes, and degenerative diseases such as osteoporosis also may be linked to the foods ones eat. The National Council for Aging Care says micronutrient deficiency is often a problem among the aging due to factors like lack of variety in diet and reduced food intake. Eating a variety of foods can provide all of the nutrients people need to stay healthy as they get older. Certain foods may be particularly helpful.

• Brain-friendly foods: Foods such as avocado, leafy vegetables, sunflower seeds, blueberries, and salmon are good sources of vitamin E, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and other nutrients that may help ward off dementias like Alzheimer’s disease, advises Sonas Home Health Care.

• Anti-inflammatory foods: Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent inflammation that can cause cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. Aging.com says foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, should be consumed at least twice per week.

• Fruits and vegetables: Fresh, canned or frozen produce tend to be high in micronutrients, including a variety of important vitamins that are essential for all components of health. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics advises eating dark green vegetables, such as leafy greens or broccoli, and orange vegetables, such as carrots and sweet potatoes.

• Energy-boosters: Choose whole grains that can provide sustained energy by way of healthy carbohydrates over processed grains.

• Bone-friendly foods: Calcium-rich foods, such as milk, yogurt and cheese, can prevent calcium from being leached from the bones, which contributes to conditions like osteoporosis.

• Digestive system-friendly foods: The digestive system slows down as the body ages, as the walls of the gastrointestinal tract thicken and digestive contractions that push waste along may slow down and become fewer. Foods rich in fiber can promote proper digestion by moving food through the digestive tract mor easily. High-fiber foods also

may help naturally reduce blood cholesterol levels.

• High-iron foods: Without enough iron in the body, a person may feel tired and lethargic from a reduced production of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood from the lungs to the rest of the body. A lack of oxygen in body tissues from anemia can be serious, says the National Council for Aging Care. Tofu, spinach, lentils, pumpkin seeds, and fortified breads and cereals are high in iron.

Mt. Olive Public Library: A Home for More Than Just Books

By Dawn M. Chiossi he most empowering question adults or children can ask is ‘why?’ That simple question stimulates curiosity, stirs the imagination, and tickles a thirst for knowledge. It can also lead to utter fascination in receiving the answer.

Both the question and answer can lead to the public library. Tucked up in various communities, the best discoveries are held within its walls. With a wealth of offerings to grab onto, libraries not only help people to discover the answer to the question ‘why’ it also leads them to ask many others.

Additionally, libraries offer something no bookstore can claim: They are free to all who wish to access them. Only a library card is necessary.

“Libraries are unique places that really have no equal. Where else can you go where everyone is welcome to visit without the pressure of having to buy something or be a member of a certain group?” Mt. Olive Library Director Mauro Magarelli asks.

“Many of our patrons cheerfully and eagerly chose to make the library an important part of their day. How many places in today’s fast-paced world can claim that?”

Located at 202 Flanders-Drakestown Road, Mt. Olive Library is a pretty and pleasant place for people of all ages. Modern, spacious and airy, there’s even an outside area to enjoy when the weather is lovely.

Serving as the informational, educational and cultural center of Mt. Olive Township, this library holds many treasures. Follow a passion, start a new one, begin learning new technologies, work, or take some “me time” to indulge in an interesting subject; Mount Olive Library has it all.

According to Magarelli, the library was founded in 1974 when a group of residents created the Mount Olive Public Library Association. “Supported by the town council, the association raised $17,000 to build the ‘Octagonal Library,’ which was once located on Wolfe Road,” he explains. “In 1986,

a public referendum to municipalize the library passed overwhelmingly on a 3 to 1 margin. Although additions to the building were made in 1979 and 1991, the original structure proved too small for the growing community,” he says. “Starting in the mid-nineties, plans were made to provide residents with a larger building. Finally, on March 13, 2005, 400 guests celebrated the dedication of the new Mt. Olive Public Library at its present location.”

Magarelli, who has been the director of the Mt. Olive Library since May of 2016, discloses that he came to Mt. Olive because he wanted to take on greater challenges from where he had previously worked in Hawthorne. “When the director position opened up I thought it was the perfect place and time to put my mark on a North Jersey library,” he relates.

Put his mark on it, he did.

The library is affectionately considered one of Mt. Olive’s best kept secrets. When asked why he thinks that is, Magarelli asserts, “We a hub of information provided in various formats.” Then he eagerly points to the library’s extensive offerings: There’s traditional books, large print books, and magazines, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Rays. Patrons can also visit the library for notary services, faxing, scanning, paper shredding, internet access, and genealogical and local history research. The library also houses free tax services for seniors via NORWESCAP and ESL training via Literacy Volunteers of Morris County, and lends internet hotspots to Mt. Olive residents as well as laptops to Mt. Olive students.

Additionally, the library’s digital content will ensure that patrons will never be bored.

Books and eAudio books via Cloud Library, 3,000 Magazine and 1,500 Comic book titles via RB Digital, Documentary movies and Great Courses via Kanopy, Interactive eBooks for K-6 students via Tumblebooks, Gale Business Plan Builder database for entrepreneurs. There are interactive tests

and test prep books via Mometrix, Consumer Reports online, and dozens of other databases via the State Library. Patrons can even access the information remotely, that’s ideal in today’s 24/7 world.

Believing that the library is a wonderful place to begin a life filled with discoveries, Magarelli eagerly dove into his position as director, putting tireless devotion into it. He is particularly proud of his efforts regarding the children’s section of the library.

“The children’s department offers a program almost every day of the week,” he shares excitedly. “The list of events include craft times, storytimes, Lego club, no-bake fun, music performances, STEM events, costumed performances, puppet shows, sign language and bilingual storytimes, and numerous other activities.”

“Kids and teens using the library inspire all librarians because it ensures that a new generation has been introduced to the grandeur of the public library system, a system that has helped countless previous generations,” he enthuses. “I’ve always felt that if libraries were a for-profit business, the money would be made in the children’s department. Therefore, I made it an objective to get more professional staffing into it and also ensured that more programming was scheduled. My goal is to make the children’s department a place that local parents and their kids can visit on a weekly or

even daily basis.”

The programming has been so popular that approximately 14,500 people have taken advantage of it, and Magarelli is utterly thrilled. He shares that feedback from patrons is quite positive, the library receives compliments on everything from their programming to their children’s room.

Already looking forward to this summer’s events and activities, Magarelli hints at what’s to come. “This year’s summer reading has a great theme of Fairytales, Mythology & Fantasy! My staff and I are really excited about what we have in the works.

Stay tuned!”

Not to be outdone, Mt. Olive Library offers just as much for adults to explore and enjoy. “Our adult programming is a mix of informational courses combined with fun activities,” Magarelli remarks. “Some examples are workshops on financial planning and elder care as well as historical lectures, art showings, painting lessons, book clubs and discussions, and monthly movie showings.”

Patrons are thrilled by the offerings.

“Adults just love our various book clubs,” he prides. “We even get compliments on the little things we do, like providing monthly sign up sheets for upcoming best sellers or for one of our quirky, creative book displays!” continued on page 32

Olive Public Library that is different and special. “I think we have all the programming that most libraries have with a couple of unique elements that really make the Mt. Olive library stand out,” Magarelli asserts. “For example, we are one of the only libraries to offer Sign Language storytimes for our young patrons and free language lessons including Italian, Spanish & Swedish for our adult patrons.”

Then there’s the added twist to the tried and true programs that Mt. Olive Library brings; “As part of our summer reading program, both the children’s and adult departments go well above and beyond the typical programming,” Magarelli says. “We make sure to incorporate film, music and theatre performances into each summer theme.

We also give our top readers a chance to win lots of prizes! Just a few of our really unique events have included historical literary reenactments, raptor workshops with real live birds, Italian movie nights, telescope/star lab workshops and visits from Star Wars villains.”

He also mentions what is affectionately known as “The Career Room.” It is a space dedicated to professionals, local entrepre-

neurs, small business owners and the like.

The “Career Room” was created for the express purpose of adult education, interviews, and small business meetings. “This very professionally decorated space is equipped with a boardroom table, projector and glass wipe board,” Magarelli states.

For adults and children alike, Mt. Olive Library is a perfect venue for those seeking the answer to the question ‘why.’ For Magarelli and other people like him, the library isn’t just a resource, it is a gift.

“I think it’s important for our patrons to remember that the public library is a reflection of our community but also an outlet to other communities, other viewpoints, and other worlds,” he enthuses. “I’m proud that our community still appreciates reading, learning, and literature. Across the state and country, circulation numbers are down.

However, our library has continued to circulate about 130,000 items per year for the past two years. The fact that this number remains steady shows that our patrons use our facility and appreciate our collections.

So when people say “Do we still need a library? The answer is a resounding yes!”

St. Thomas Orthodox Church Marks Its First Year in Mt. Olive

by Elsie Walker n December 2018, a fire broke out at the St. Thomas Orthodox Church, which at the time was located in Dover. The fire destroyed the altar and made the building unusable. However, in what it has called, “God’s divine intervention for our church to blossom under a new roof”, the congregation found that five days after the fire, the building of the Hope Baptist Church on 50 Flanders-Bartley Road in Flanders went up for sale. St. Thomas Orthodox Church decided to buy the Flanders church and went through getting the needed approvals and set out to raise funds from other churches in its Diocese. On March 14, 2019, 100 days after fire had struck its church in Dover. the congregation was able to secure its new home. This month marks the church’s first anniversary in Mt. Olive.

Looking at this past year, the church’s vicar, Rev. Fr. Shibu Daniel said he thanks God for this opportunity of being in Mt. Olive. Daniel noted the church is enjoying “the beautiful, serene area and how nice the people are.”

Daniel has been the vicar of the church for about 10 years. Daniel studied at the Orthodox Theological Seminary, Kottayam, India from 2001 to 2006 and was ordained as a priest in 2007. He has a wife, Smitha and a son, Ashish. Daniel noted that he was interested in ministry even as a child. He was inspired to become a pastor by the priest in his community. Also, Daniel noted, “I’m a people person.” He shared, “The best gift we can give someone is to be there when they need it.” The vicar’s hobbies include reading and an interest in sports.

Within the local church, a Managing Committee is elected every year by the parish General Body, and that Managing Committee, along with the parish coordinators,

under the presidentship of the Vicar, take care of the daily activities, administration and events of the parish.

St. Thomas Orthodox Church is part of the Malankara (Indian) Orthodox Church, which has about 2.5 million members worldwide. It has two Dioceses in America: the Northeast American Diocese and the Southwest American Diocese. (St. Thomas Orthodox Church is in the Northeast American Diocese.) When asked to give some background on its denomination, members of the church’s Managing Committee, shared this summary: “The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church was founded by St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, who came to India in A.D. 52. At least from the fourth century, the Indian church entered into a close relationship with the Persian or East Syrian Church. From the Persians, the Indian church inherited the East Syrian language and liturgies, and gradually came to be known as Syrian Christians.

In the sixteenth century, Roman Catholic missionaries came to Kerala. They tried to unite the Syrian Christians to the Roman Catholic Church, and this led to a split in the community. Those who accepted Roman Catholicism are the present Syro-Malabar Catholics. Later, Western Protestant missionaries came to Kerala and worked among the Syrian Christians. This also created certain divisions in the community. In the seventeenth century, we sought help from Antiochian church; thereby, several bishops and fathers came to India and we welcomed them wholeheartedly. Later, this Antiochian association took the nature of invasion and rule over our church. Our church resisted this authoritarian attitude and established our own identity as an indigenous autonomous church, which led to the establishment of “Catholicate” in 1912.

At present, the church is using the West Syrian liturgies and practices. The faith of the church is that which was established in the three Ecumenical Synods viz; Councils of Nicea (A.D. 325), Constantinople (A.D. 381) and Ephesus establish (A.D. 431)…. The Church is in good ecumenical relationship with the Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Protestant Churches.”

Each Sunday, St. Thomas Orthodox Church has a prayer meeting at 9 a.m. At 10 a.m., there is Qurbana (mass) which includes celebrating the Holy Eucharist every week. Being an orthodox church, they follow a traditional style of worship.

After worship, the children and youth through high school, go to Sunday School.

They first meet as a group for prayer, song, etc. and then go to their classes which are divided by grade level. Sunday School is held during the school year and takes a break during the summer months.

The church holds an Orthodox Vacation Bible School (OVBS) in the summer which includes crafts and activities.

In addition, Beno Joshua, Joint Secretary of the church’s Managing Committee shared the church has a choir of children, 7th grade through high school. Joshua noted that the denomination holds choir competitions each year, first at the area level and then, those who win at that level, go on to the Diocese level. He noted that the choirs sing liturgical songs in the completion and that for the last two years in a row, St. Thomas Orthodox Church has won at both the area and Diocese levels.

The spirit of giving is instilled in the Sunday School children. Secretary of the Managing Committee, George Thumpayil, shared that rather than use the allowance money they receive from parents. the children hold car washes “to make their own

money to donate” to church outreaches.

The church pays for the car wash supplies, so that all the monies the children make go right to their outreach.

Also, after worship is a time of fellowship for the church. Among the fellowship opportunities at the church is the women’s league or MMVS (Morth Mariam Vanitha Samajam). The MMVS is the St Mary’s Orthodox Women’s League of India, the women’s wing of the Malankara Orthodox Church of India. Its founders named it “Morth Mariam Samajam” after the Blessed Virgin Mary whom they accepted as their interceding saint. The league meets to pray,and study the Bible and is involved in a variety of outreaches throughout the year including a blood drive and helping Hope House (in Dover).

Another fellowship opportunity is the Mar Gregorios Orthodox Christian Student Movement (MGOCSM). Named after the first Indian Orthodox saint, Mar Gregorios Geevarghese of Parumala, it is a worldwide student spiritual organization started in India. Young adults and college students meet to talk about social questions young people face, get religious education and are given direction and support in following in the Christian way.

Managing Committee Treasurer, Thomaskutty Daniel noted that fellowship after church can last until 3pm or 4pm. Daniel shared that many want to “spend quality time together”.

He noted that there are also fellowship opportunities outside of those on Sunday.

There is a monthly prayer meeting held in a member’s home. Group gatherings also include a yearly family picnic, a family night, and a Diocese family conference. The conference is for members of the churches continued on page 41

o many people are facing the dilemma of designing for a smaller space. Millennials aren’t interested in large homes in the suburbs and Baby Boomers are downsizing. Here some tips and tricks I recommend to my clients Small Space Furniture: Beds, Desks and More There are several companies that offer smaller scale furniture specifically for city dwellers. Although still comfy, their depth and width are scaled so that they’ll work in the smallest of rooms (and fit in the freight elevator).

For sleeping accommodations in a studio or small apartment, consider a Murphy bed or sleeper sofa (basically, a bed that disappears when you’re awake). A loft bed gives you the option of having seating or a desk beneath, much like in a college dorm. Platform beds are another option for smaller-scale bedrooms. One of my clients was downsizing to a beautiful townhome off the Green in Morristown. Great location – you can walk to everything.. but the rooms were considerably smaller than their previous home. You don’t have to sacrifice style for the sake of size.

Less Is More with Multitasking Furniture Get furniture that multitasks. 1/2 teaspoon vanilla sprinkles (optional) To make Red Raspberry Crush: Thaw raspberries on countertop at room temperature 30 minutes.

Using rolling pin, gently mash raspberries in sealed bag.

To make tarts: Heat oven to 425 F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

A Plant-Based, Dairy-Inspired Dish

W

ith the rise in popularity of plantbased diets and dishes, combining them with dairy products can create a superfood power couple. For example, the cheddar cheese found in these Vegetarian Stuffed Peppers helps optimize nutrient absorption from the rice, black beans, corn and tomatoes to create a nutritious and delicious appetizer or meal.

Vegetarian Stuffed Peppers 6 large sweet bell peppers 1/2 cup diced sweet onion 1 cup cherry tomatoes, sliced in half 1 cup frozen corn, thawed 1 1/2 cups cooked black beans plain (drained and rinsed if using canned beans) 2 cups cooked brown rice 1/2 teaspoon chipotle chili powder 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 1/2 cups shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese, divided Preheat the oven to 350º F. Line a rimmed half sheet pan with non-stick aluminum foil.

Slice the tops off of the sweet bell peppers. Use a spoon to scoop the seeds and white membranes from the insides of the peppers. Discard the pepper tops and seeds. Place the peppers onto the prepared half sheet pan; briefly set aside.

In a large bowl, stir together the diced onion, cherry tomatoes, corn, black beans, and brown rice until combined. Sprinkle the chili powder, oregano, salt, and pepper over top before stirring to distribute the seasonings throughout. Fold 1 cup of the Cheddar cheese into the filling, reserving the remaining cheese for later.

Stuff the open cavities of the sweet bell peppers tightly with filling, mounding a bit of the filling over the top edge of the peppers. Sprinkle the remaining Cheddar cheese over top of the filling. Bake the stuffed peppers for 30 to 35 minutes or

books, “everything that the students need,” said Thumpayil. In the past, the drive has benefitted needy students in Dover. Now that the church is in Mt. Olive, it hopes to help needy students in this area.

Every year, the church has a summer blood drive, working with the Blood Bank of New Jersey.

For Christmas, the church participates in the Operation Christmas Child program of Samaritan’s Purse. Through that program, shoeboxes with goods for needy children are distributed throughout the world.

The church also helps Hope House

Catholic Charities in Dover by collecting non-perishable food items. In addition, the church does a winter coat drive for “lightly used” items to give to Hope House. Speaking of clothes, the church has donated used clothes to an international relief organization.

When made known of needs through its diocese, the church has reached out to help. For example, in 2019, the church raised money to help a family in Pennsylvania where the husband, the breadwinner, had died suddenly, leaving the family in need. Other examples are donating monies

for disaster(flood) relief in part of India and for a house destroyed in the flood. For the church’s jubilee in 2018, it donated a dialysis machine to a dialysis center in India to help the poor who cannot afford such care.

Talking about the church’s coming to Mt. Olive one year ago, Rev. Fr. Daniel reflected on the area’s name. He noted that the Mount of Olives was the location of Jesus’ ascension and the place the second coming is expected. Thus, “Mt. Olive” seems like a perfect location for a church.

MOACC’s Business Builder Series Kicks Off March 10

he Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce has always been dedicated to providing programming that best bolsters its members’ businesses and careers. In 2020, the Chamber is restructuring its workshop offerings to reflect this mission, launching a brand new Business Builder Series to aid its members across fields and experience levels.

The Business Builder Series will include seven workshops throughout the year, each led by experts in the field and designed to provide new and established business members access to quality subject matter.

“We’ve been looking at our program-

ming, assessing feedback, and re-focusing our attention from many small group meetings to programs that speak to our community at large, which allows for greater and more meaningful interactions between business members of varied experience levels and backgrounds,” said Chamber President Chuck Aaron.

The Business Builder Series launches on Tuesday March 10 at Rutherfurd Hall in Allamuchy Township with a presentation by Greg Stewart, the co-founder and President of NexGen Management LLC, and Mary Adelman, the Regional Director of the New Jersey Small Business Development Center

of Northwest New Jersey. They will explore resource access and financing for the small business.

Additional workshops will be held on April 21, about customer satisfaction and feedback; May 12, featuring a panel discussion with women entrepreneurs; July 14, covering leadership and building a successful team; Aug. 11, positioning your business in the minds of potential consumers; Sept.

8, assessing long-term goals; and Nov. 10, identifying potential clients through market research and communication.

These workshops, which run 6:30-8:30 p.m., are $35 in advance for Chamber

members or $45 for non-members (add $5 at the door), with options for booking the series in advance for a reduced cost. Dinner is included.

In addition to the Business Builder Series, the Chamber will continue to offer its popular Marketing in the Morning meeting the third Wednesday of each month, as well as a slew of special events throughout the year, including the annual New Jersey Devils Hockey Trip in March, Business and Humanitarian Awards ceremony and annual Holiday party. In addition, the NIFA notes that the modern agricultural industry employs technology such as robots, temperature and moisture sensors, aerial images, and global positioning systems.

If it sounds complicated, that’s because it is. For example, modern sensors can detect soil conditions, potentially producing hundreds of readings per second. These sensors help farmers know the best possible time to plant seeds so they can reach their full potential. That improves both the efficiency of modern farms as well as their output.

The NIFA also notes that agricultural technology has re-

duced waste. For instance, thanks to agricultural technology, farmers no longer have to apply water, fertilizers and pesticides uniformly across entire fields. Technology has shown that farmers can simply target specific areas or even treat individual plants differently. That saves time and allows farmers to use only minimal quantities of water, fertilizer and pesticides. In addition, according to the NIFA, employing agricultural technology in this fashion leads to higher crop productivity and reduces runoff of chemicals into rivers and groundwater, thereby reducing the farm’s impact on local ecosystems.

‘Watershed U’ Offered to High School Students June 22-26

H

igh school students considering majoring in environmental science, conservation or environmental education in college are invited to “Watershed University,” a new program offered this summer by Raritan Headwaters Association (RHA), the region’s watershed watchdog.

The one-week certificate program will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, June 22, through Friday, June 26, at the Fairview Farm Wildlife Preserve, 2121 Larger Cross Road, Bedminster.

The program is designed for students entering grades 9-12 who want to gain insights in the environmental field, learn how to make impactful change and serve their communities. Each day includes a speaker, hands-on scientific exploration, and team building.

“Participants will learn from experts, examining environmental and social topics that affect local and global natural resource challenges,” said Lauren Theis, education director for Raritan Headwaters. “On-theground conservation projects will allow students to gain skills in scientific research, communication, and building connections

oney management and building long-term financial health is a careful balancing act between long- and short-term financial needs, and now is a perfect opportunity to re-examine your goals. Project Help’s Art Poster Contest Deadline Extended

W

hat? It’s March??

How can that be? Wasn’t it just Thanksgiving???

That’s the feedback Project Help has gotten from art teachers across the state.

Many teachers and art students want to participate in the organization’s annual Art Poster Contest, but time got away from them over the holiday season.

We don’t want to leave anyone out, so the deadline for the contest has been pushed forward to March 20.

Here’s what you need to know...

In 2019 the veteran’s aid group successfully launched its mobile closet, a repurposed school bus that brings clothing and other necessities to retired military individuals and families statewide.

Based on that milestone event Project Help has chosen its theme for the Third Annual Poster Contest. Art students are being asked to focus their creativity on the Project Help bus and how it will benefit veterans in need of assistance.

Last year hundreds of school children from throughout New Jersey submitted their handiwork. This year thousands are expected to participate.

All students - kindergarten through high school - are eligible to share their artistry and creativity. Art teachers already have the contest details in hand so all that is needed are some innovative ideas and the sky is the limit imagination!

Individual teachers can also reach out to Project Help to sign up and young artists can participate inde-

pendently if their schools aren’t entering the contest.

All artwork will need to be submitted by the new deadline March 20. Entries will be judged on design, originality and content. Prizes will be awarded in four grade level groups.

The winners and their families will be invited to a dinner award ceremony.

Winning entries will be displayed on social media, the Project Help website and at events to support the mission of serving our veterans.

Navigating Hope Completes 100th Stop Brings Mobile Social Services Across Morris County

orris County's Navigating Hope mobile social services team recently completed their 100th stop as part of unique program launched by the Board of Freeholders in 2019, and which has crisscrossed Morris County on wheels for the past eight months to help residents in need of assistance.

Many times working in tandem with Morris County Sheriff James M. Gannon's Hope One mobile addictions services, Navigating Hope seeks out clients who cannot get to county social services offices in Morris Township and Dover due to transportation, family or physical issues, among others.

The mobile program visit supermarkets, libraries, churches, train stations, soup kitchens, shopping malls, and many other locations to reach county residents in need of assistance.

The Board of Freeholders were briefed on the team's first year on the road, which began with a June 6, 2019 stop at the Dover Free Produce Market at the Salvation Army and made its 100th stop outside of landlord-tenant court which is held in the Morris County Courthouse in Morristown.

"I am so proud of this team. Having been out in the field a number of time with them, watching them interact with our residents, it is heartwarming to see what they are doing,'' said Freeholder Kathy DeFillippo. "There are people who just can't get out in our county and don't have the wherewithal to navigate the social services process on their own.''

"Morris County is the accessible county,'' added Freeholder Director Deborah Smith. “If you can't get to us, we'll get to you. I think that's the whole point behind Navigating Hope.''

Navigating Hope team members, including coordinator Christopher Linne, Rewaida Muheisen of the county Office of Temporary Assistance, and Ashley Reed of Family Promise of Morris County, made a presentation to the freeholders at their county government work session in Morristown.

Linne explained that the mobile operation has visited 31 of the county's 39 municipalities, with Victory Gardens to be number 32 in March. Due to need, they have visited some locations multiple times, especially when they have found a community in need.

with numerous organizations in the county, including the countywide library network, Legal Services of Northwest Jersey, Homeless Solutions, senior housing complexes, soup kitchens, and religious institutions, among others, to expand the reach of Navigating Hope.

In 2019, the Navigating Hope team completed nearly 300 applications or client evaluations for service and made more than 150 referrals to other social services organizations, in addition to providing information to hundreds more county residents.

To reach more residents in need in 2020, Navigating Hope has expanded to a

four-day-week operation, including a permanent weekly stop at the land-

lord-tenant court, where they have found a real need for their mobile services.

5 Tips for Traveling by Air with Children

S

pring, for some families, means packing bags and heading to the airport for a getaway. However, flying with young children can be stressful.

“New experiences can be exciting for some children, but they can also be frightening, especially if it’s your child’s first time flying,” said Linda Nelson, a program developer on KinderCare’s education team. “Talking about what will happen can help your family manage expectations and focus on the fun of travel.”

Consider these ideas to help make family airplane travel an enjoyable adventure for everyone.

Schedule Flights Smartly If you have the ability, pick a flight that works with your child’s current eating and sleeping schedules. Aim for a flight that occurs between mealtimes, and try to fly during normal naptime.

Be Ready for Jet Lag If you’re going to cross time zones, plan ahead to combat jet lag. Two weeks before traveling, start making small adjustments to your family’s schedule by moving bedtime 20 minutes toward the time zone you’ll be traveling. Wait a few days then adjust your schedule again. When you get to your destination, try to stick to your child’s regular schedule by taking naps and going to bed as close to his or her normal times as possible.

Pack the Essentials At the airport, you’ll want to move nimbly and handsfree, so opt for a backpack as your carry-on. Pack a change of clothes for each member of the family, diaper wipes, tissues, lotion and lip balm. If your child uses a pacifier, attach

it to your child’s clothing using a clip. It can help soothe the pressure in his or her ears during takeoff and landing. Also consider packing books, crayons, markers, pencils, paper, activity books and age-appropriate toys to keep your child occupied.

Remember the Snacks Low blood sugar can turn even the sweetest kids into champion tantrum throwers, so be sure to bring along plenty of healthy snacks in case delays disrupt regular mealtimes. Consider options like homemade granola or protein bars, fresh fruits and veggies, sandwiches or almond-butter pouches. If your flight is long, try to pack snacks that won’t create lots of crumbs you’ll have to live with until you arrive at your destination. Also remember a spill-proof cup or water bottle you can fill before boarding.

Mind the Rules Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents are there to help passengers, but there are also rules that must be followed. Consider these airport regulations before traveling: Medically necessary liquids like baby formula, baby food, juice and breast milk are not subject to the 3.4-ounce limit.

Children under the age of 12 are not required to remove their shoes during screening.

If you’re flying within the United States, children under the age of 18 traveling with an adult usually don’t need more identification than a boarding pass. However, some airlines may ask for a birth certificate for lap infants. Call ahead of time to see which documents you need.
