Recognizing Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
On September 30, Newton’s Grove School will observe Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day honours Indigenous communities across the country; and recognizes the difficult legacy of Residential Schools and their impact on Indigenous communities, emphasizing that every child matters We encourage all staff and students to wear orange in solidarity In preparation, classrooms will engage in several activities Students will participate in Orange Shirt Day art projects, decorating shirts and feathers while exploring the day’s significance through Phyllis’s Orange Shirt by Phyllis Webstad

They will also create reconciliation posters, highlighting themes such as preserving Indigenous cultures and supporting community healing. On September 30th, our whole school assembly will include moments of reflection, learning, and finding ways to honour the 94 Calls to Action. We are proud of our community’s demonstrated compassion and understanding, we encourage all our families to continue these important conversations at home as we progress toward reconciliation

Meet Ms. Andrea Taylor
This year, we are excited to introduce a new feature to our Junior School newsletter: Specialist Spotlight! Each month, we’ll highlight one of our talented specialist teachers to help you get to know them better. For September, we’re thrilled to shine the spotlight on Ms. Taylor, our fabulous STEM Teacher! Ms. Taylor has been a dedicated STEM teacher at Newton’s Grove School for many years, proudly connecting students with technology since the days of Windows 98! She’s passionate about using technology to enhance learning and is excited about advancements like predictive AI that foster creativity and innovation. “Their eagerness to tackle challenges is contagious, and it’s rewarding to see them grow, in terms of their skills and confidence,” says Ms Taylor
fun fact
I’ve
been playing Pokemon Go since 2016. Some may roll their eyes, but your kids think I’m cool!
One of Ms Taylor’s favourite projects is a fun Greek Mythology assignment with her Grade 4s Each student is ‘chosen’ by a Greek god, researches them, and creates a PowerPoint, uncovering their god's wild family tree! Then, they team up to build temples with TinkerCad and Lego, testing them on a shake table. She is so excited to see what the 4s will do this year!

from Ms Taylor
As a STEM teacher and as a parent, Ms. Taylor advises fostering curiosity and exploration at home “Let them explore, make mistakes, and discover their passions in fields like coding, robotics, and digital art. Your support and encouragement will go a long way in fueling their passion for technology!”
