A MOMENT WITH CELEBRATING THE LEGACY OF FATHERHOOD As we embrace the warmth of June and the arrival of summer, we come together to celebrate an annual occasion—Father’s Day. This day is dedicated to honoring the fathers, grandfathers, and father figures who play a crucial role in our lives. It is a time to reflect on their invaluable contributions and profound impact, particularly on young boys and men.

Father’s Day, as we currently recognize it, has a rich history that dates to the early 20th century.

The first known Father’s Day service occurred in Fairmont, West Virginia, on July 5, 1908, after a tragic mining accident. However, the widespread celebration of Father’s Day began with the efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, in 1910. Inspired by her father, a Civil War veteran who nurtured six children as a single parent, Dodd sought to establish a day equivalent to Mother’s Day for fathers. Throughout the years, the idea gained momentum. In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation designating Father’s Day as a national holiday to be celebrated on the third Sunday in June of each year.

Father’s Day is more than just a date on the calendar; it is an acknowledgment of the vital role fathers play in the development and well-being of their children. For young boys and men, the presence of a positive male role model is vital. Fathers and father figures provide guidance, support, and a blueprint for what it means to be a responsible and caring individual.

A father’s influence extends far beyond daily interactions. He is a beacon of strength, teaching his children about resilience, integrity, and empathy.

Boys often look to their fathers for cues on how to navigate the world, how to treat others, and how to manage life’s challenges with grace and courage.

In today’s world, where young men are bombarded with conflicting messages about adulthood, exhibiting a positive role model is more important than ever. A father’s consistent presence and involvement can steer young men away from negative influences and guide them towards fulfilling productive lives.

Fathers teach their sons the value of hard work,

respect for others, and the importance of making responsible choices. These lessons assemble the foundation for young men to grow into honorable and successful adults.

As I reflect on the significance of Father’s Day, I am reminded of my father and the profound impact he had on my life. Growing up in Blakely, Georgia, I was fortunate to have a father who was the essence of dedication and strength. As the provider for our large family, he worked tirelessly to ensure that we had everything we needed.

His commitment to his family was admirable, and he was a positive role model not only as a husband to my mother but also to me, my brothers, and my sisters.

My father’s influence extended beyond our household. He was respected in our community for his integrity and generosity. His example taught me the importance of giving back to the community and being a man of honor and principle. These values have remained with me throughout my life and have been instrumental in shaping my future and my career in law enforcement.

My father’s guidance and support laid the foundation for my journey to eventually becoming the Sheriff of Newton County. His teachings inspired me to pursue a path where I could serve and protect others. Today, as the Sheriff of the 29th largest county in the State of Georgia and the President of the Georgia Sheriff’s Association, I strive to uphold the values he instilled in me. My father’s legacy continues to guide me as I work to make our community a safer and better place for all.

As law enforcement community members, we understand the importance of being positive role models, especially to the young boys and men in our communities. Male law enforcement officers have a unique opportunity to influence the lives of young people in a meaningful way. By demonstrating professionalism, integrity, and compassion, we can show young men what it means to be a responsible and contributing member of society.

Beyond the world of law enforcement, men in

Whether as teachers, coaches, doctors, or community leaders, men can inspire young boys to strive for excellence and pursue their dreams. By sharing our experiences and offering guidance, we can assist in shaping the next generation of leaders and change-makers.

In our community, we are fortunate to have many men who serve as mentors and role models. These individuals dedicate their time and energy to support and guide young people, helping them navigate the challenges of adolescence and prepare for the future.

Their contributions are important, and their impact is felt across Newton County and beyond.

For those of us who have lost fathers, this day can be a time of reflection and remembrance, cherishing the memories and the lessons they imparted.

In the words of the late Billy Graham, “A good Father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.”

The administrative office hours for the Newton County Sheriff's Office are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding county holidays.

The Newton County Jail is open 24 hours, 7 days a week.

NCSO PARTICIPATES IN THE WASHINGTON STREET SUMMER CAMP On June 3, 2024, the Newton County Sheriff’s Office Community Outreach Unit made an appearance at the Washington Street Summer Camp. The visit was part of the NCSO’s ongoing commitment to fostering positive relationships with the youth of the community. Officers engaged with the campers through various interactive activities and educational talks aimed at promoting awareness and responsibility.

The NCSO is proud to support amazing youth programs like the Washington Street Summer Camp, recognizing the vital role such initiatives play in shaping the community’s future leaders. By participating in these programs, the Sheriff’s Office not only provides essential safety education but also mentors young individuals.

NCSO DEPUTIES CONNECT WITH LOCAL NEWTON COUNTY FAMILY While on duty, Sergeant Kent and Deputy Garrett took a moment to connect with a local Newton County family and have some fun with the kids! During their visit, they shared stories and even participated in games with the children, creating a joyful and memorable experience for everyone involved.

These interactionsnot only strengthen the bond between law enforcement and residents but also help build trust and mutual respect. The dedication and care displayed by Sergeant Kent and Deputy Garrett are examples of the values upheld by the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, demonstrating their commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of the people they serve.

NCSO TRAFFIC UNIT ESCORTS SECOND LINE SATURDAY MARCH On June 8, 2024, the Newton County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit was honored to escort the Second Line Saturday march to the Square. The event, hosted by the City of Covington, was a joyous celebration, bringing together our community and visitors for a night to remember on the Square.

NCSO RECEIVES A DONATION OF MORE THAN 500 BOOK BAGS In June, the Newton County Sheriff’s Office received a donation of 564 book bags from Mike Walden for its annual Back to School Supply Giveaway, scheduled for July 27th at Newton High School.

Sheriff Ezell Brown and the NCSO thank Mr. Walden for making such a positive impact in the Newton County community.

Hundreds of students will have the opportunity to start the school year of right, equipped with the supplies they need to succeed, because of this donation!

NCSO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE UNIT ATTENDS REGIONAL SUMMIT On June 14, 2024, Lt. Wade Freeman of the Newton County Sheriff’s Office Domestic Violence Unit attended the Georgia Commission on Family Violence Regional Summit in Henry County, GA. Lt. Freeman, a member of the Newton County Family Violence Task Force, was joined by other members of the task force at the summit. The event also welcomed Family Violence Task Forces from the Griffin, Towaliga, Flint, Rockdale, and Alcovy Judicial Circuits.

The goal of the Georgia Commission on Family Violence for this training was to create safer environments for those affected by family violence.

This was achieved by equipping professionals, community leaders, and concerned individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to take informed steps towards reducing family violence in our communities.

NCSO PARTICIPATES IN JUNETEENTH BASKETBALL GAME On June 15, 2024, the Newton County Sheriff’s Office took part in a basketball game at the old R.L. Cousins High School gym during the Juneteenth Festival. The game featured a match-up between a team composed of members from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office and the Covington Police Department against a team made up of personnel from Newton County Fire Services and the Covington Fire Department. After a closely contested match, the fire department team won, 39-33.

NCSO HOSTS EMPLOYEE SPAGHETTI LUNCHEON In June, the Newton County Sheriff’s Office hosted its Employee Spaghetti Luncheon, an event designed to foster fellowship among the staff.

The luncheon, held in the agency’s employee dining room, featured a delicious spread of spaghetti, garlic bread, and salad. Organized by Sheriff Ezell Brown, the event aimed to provide an atmosphere where employees could take a break and enjoy a meal together.

NCSO HOSTS 5TH ANNUAL BACK TO SCHOOL GOLF TOURNAMENT Sheriff Ezell Brown and the Newton County Sheriff’s Office hosted their 5th Annual Back to School Golf Tournament at Ashton Hills Golf Course in Covington, Ga, on June 20, 2024, with special guest Atlanta News First’s Meteorologist Ella Dorsey.

This year, 48 golfers, forming a total of 12 teams, participated in the event. Funds raised from the tournament are used to provide students with essential supplies for the school year through the Sheriff’s Office’s annual Back to School Giveaway.

“I want to extend a special thanks to all our sponsors who contributed to the golf tournament, helping raise funds for our annual Back to School Giveaway,” said Sheriff Brown. “I also thank the volunteers and my staff for their efforts in ensuring the success of this year’s golf tournament. Additionally, I want to thank Atlanta News First’s Meteorologist Ella Dorsey for joining our cause this year. Because of all involved, this event was a great success.”
