notes Spring is my favorite time of year. Being a horse lover and former owner, nothing is more beautiful to me than turning out the herd at dawn, and feeling the promise of the first warm day! Horses know it too, as they gallop across the pasture, tails held high, turfs of earth flying.

Hi, I’m Patty Mason, one of the voices of Newton Community Education. Born and raised in Newton, I’m a 3rd generation “Lake” resident. A “jivel.” If you don’t know where The Lake is, don’t check for a body of water on your map of Newton… it’s long gone, but the spirit of Nonantum will always carry with it those bygone years of Silver Lake, where my grandfather built his first home in America.

I started working for NCE 15 years ago. I’ve worked with three directors, and I’m proud of what our program is today. I came from the corporate world with a focus on customer support; today, when you call to register for a class or simply need help, chances are you’ll speak to me. I love helping people. It’s in my nature. Part of the joy of working here is meeting and speaking with so many wonderful people. I recognize your voices, your names, and what classes you enjoy. Some of you have been taking classes with us for as long as I can remember, and that’s pretty cool!

Our team is dedicated to bringing you the best programs possible. This spring is no exception. If you love cooking, grab your friends for a night out and learn to create a meal that will impress your guests. Personally, I’m looking forward to “Flavors of Sri Lanka” with Renita Mendonca. COURSE ADMISSION Adult courses are open to students 16 years of age and older. Residents of other communities are welcome. There is a nonrefundable $6 registration fee per student each semester.

NCE reserves the right to cancel classes that are under-enrolled, to change times and locations when necessary, and to substitute instructors if needed.

OFFICE HOURS Our main office is at Newton North HS, Room 101, 457 Walnut St., Newtonville; it is open from 8:30am to 6pm with coverage until 8pm on evenings when classes are in session. Our satellite office at Newton South, 140 Brandeis Rd., Newton Center, is open when classes are taking place during the day and in the evening.

WITHDRAWALS/REFUNDS Full refunds are given if a class is cancelled due to low enrollment. You must withdraw at least one week before your course’s starting date to receive either a tuition refund minus a $10 processing fee or a course voucher minus a $5 processing fee. The $6 registration fee is non-refundable unless we cancel a class.

Note: Refunds for checks and cash take 4-6 weeks; for credit cards, allow one week. We regret that no other refunds or vouchers will be given.

Kids summer classes You must withdraw by May 30 to receive a refund minus a $25 processing fee. No refunds or credits will be given after May 30.

Staff Picks Tree Swallow Sunday Paul Bruce, Instructor Release feathers into the wind for swooping swallows to catch. The tree swallows may take the right fat fluffy feather from your hand at a swooping speed of 200+ mph.

Bet you’ve never seen anything like this before! Use your own feathers to start your own colony. You’ll observe aerial courtship, mating, and feeding. We’ll enjoy a short nature walk, too; as we will be walking in the water, wear waterproof boots. Directions will be emailed to students. All ages welcome, adults too.

Beginning the Saxophone Anthony Cincotta, Instructor It’s never too late to learn how to play one of the coolest musical instruments around.

This class covers all the basics from putting the horn together, to proper cleaning and handling techniques, to making your first sounds on the saxophone. You’ll build a strong foundation through sound development and technique as you go from never having held an instrument to being able to read music fluidly and play simple and elegant tunes. You bring the passion, we’ll provide the music. Bring an alto sax in good working order, a mouthpiece, neck strap, #2 reed, folder for handouts, and music stand if available. Does your story telling leave Red Riding Hood snuggled up with Three Bears and your kids confused and unsatisfied?

Storytime doesn’t have to be that way. Join us and learn to tell stories that will stretch your children’s imagination, build their literacy skills, and help you bond together over bedtime. Learn techniques to help you and your child invent tales, like your own version of a simple folktale, and gain understanding of basic story structures that you can use anytime. Get tips on acting out narratives, taking on different character voices and gestures, and singing silly refrains. Be prepared when the kids beg for one more, and make bedtime your children’s (or grandchildren’s) favorite part of the day. Now that’s happily ever after.

Is your downward dog a little droopy? How can the instructor’s legs open to nearly a 180 degree split in seated angle pose, and yours won’t even spread to 90 degrees?

It’s not all skill and practice—a lot of it has to do with your anatomy. Individual variation in bone structure can cause dramatic differences in joint range of motion.

In this workshop you’ll learn to identify tension versus compression and discover how these sensations relate to the way your body looks and feels in a range of yoga positions. We’ll discuss how to know when it is appropriate to go deeper into a pose and when it’s time to back off, so you can better understand and explore the natural limits of your body. The class will include discussion, demonstration, and yoga practice.

Art & Photography Basic Drawing Gary Tucker, Instructor Drawing is the most approachable form of visual art. It is an excellent precursor to painting, illustration, web design, animation, plus more. It is also satisfying and challenging on it’s own. Through the practice of drawing we learn to see the world around us—and then interpret it.

Our instructor will provide demonstrations and exercises in basic design using line, contour, shape, value, texture, composition, shadow and light. Each week you’ll work from a different still life. In addition, there will be homework assignments and weekly critiques. Bring a 9” x 12” sketchbook, kneaded eraser, 2B, 4B, and 6B pencils, and a pencil sharpener. A $7 materials fee is payable to the instructor at the first class.

The Colored Pencil Cyrus Whittier, Instructor Create vibrant and expressive art as you discover the broad range of drawing with colored pencils. Drawing: One-Point Perspective & Beyond Susan Funk, Instructor Add depth to your paintings with perspective drawing. Artists have used this technique for centuries to create illusions of depth on a flat surface. By establishing a vanishing point in your artwork, you’ll watch it come alive as you connect the dots. We’ll review and practice one-point perspective, and each week we will add another “point”. You’ll also work with multiple vanishing points and learn about curvilinear perspectives. Draw your Pet Susan Funk, Instructor Learn to capture the image of animals on paper through drawing. You’ll start with sketching the basics in graphite pencil, like fur texture, shading, and facial features, and then combine these into a composition of your pet. We’ll also experiment with hue, shade, tint and tone, using colored pencils.

Bring a photo of a pet or animal, an 8x10 sketchbook, #2 pencils, colored pencils, and erasers. If you’d prefer to work in a medium other than pencils, bring those materials.

Art of Pastel Jeanne Gugino, Instructor Learn how to draw with pastels and use them in their subtle and brilliant ways.

Using themes such as sunflowers, picnics, and beaches, you’ll discover the joy of pastel painting. Begin to explore the many exciting possibilities of working with colored chalks as you try various techniques and develop your own style. We’ll also discuss some of the most contemporary artists working in pastels. Figure Drawing Alma Bella Solis, Instructor Drawing the human form is the most enduring theme in fine arts and likewise most challenging. With charcoal and graphite pencils and sticks, you’ll learn to draw using methods of outline, contour, shading, blending, and detailing. With imagination and instructor guidance, you’ll produce drawings within proportion and perspective as you compose a complete work of art. We’ll explore the fundamentals and surprises of painting with watercolors as well as the variety of techniques available to the watercolorist. Still Life with Watercolors Jeanne Gugino, Instructor Explore the elements of landscape and stilllife painting using watercolors. We’ll draw and paint from still lifes such as, fruits and flowers, bowls and vases, to gather an understanding of light, form, and dimension.

Through layering and color mixing exercises, you’ll develop techniques to capture the unique aspect of transparency in watercolor. Intro to Acrylic Painting Jack Neylan, Instructor Many artists enjoy working with acrylics for its advantages: it is water based (instead of solvents, which are toxic), acrylics can be manipulated for various visual results, and they dry very fast—so it is easy to learn quickly! Explore art in this medium and learn how to paint with acrylics. We will cover essential foundation skills such as how to set up your palette, color mixing, and composition. Impressionist Painting Zhanna Cantor, Instructor The Impressionist movement, which included artists such as Monet, Renoir, and Pissaro, developed in France during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The genre is characterized by the way artists render reflected light using small strokes of bold color. Students will receive individualized instruction to develop at their own pace.

Landscape Painting Zhanna Cantor, Instructor Learn to paint landscapes from imagination, photographs, or nature using acrylics or oils. Improve your technique by learning about perspective, color mixing, and value. We’ll practice rendering trees, rocks, water, and other elements of nature.

Intro to Digital Photography Laura Faye Martin, Instructor New to digital photography? Have an eye for what you want to shoot, but get stuck reading the manual? This class will get you comfortable using the functions that are “hidden” inside your camera. You’ll get tips for getting your photos off the camera and into your computer, and learn how to manage that ever-growing collection of images.

Our weekly slide show will build your confidence as we focus on composition and camera settings to help you improve your shooting skills. In addition, we’ll discuss online resources for printing and photo sharing and broach the topic of imaging software that might help you along the way.

This course is for beginners using compact, point-and-shoot digital cameras only.

Digital Photography: Beyond Beginner Brooks Mathewson, Instructor

The Next Step in Photography Natanya Khashan, Instructor

Improve your picture-taking skills as you learn about the manual operation of your camera. We will discuss how to choose the right combination of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO to create properly exposed, sharp images. We’ll also address technical aspects such as exposure compensation, light metering, and autofocus as we examine creative ways to use light to produce interesting images. Finally, we’ll discuss how to best compose images for maximum artistic effect. The emphasis in this course will be on outdoor photography. Throughout the class you will have an opportunity to present photography for group critique and analysis.

Bring your digital SLR camera, its manual, and a fully charged battery. Prerequisite: our Intro to Digital Photography class or comparable experience.

If you’ve outgrown your digital point and shoot camera and want to develop your photography skills, this class is for you.

Discover how to control shutter speed and aperture, metering, focus, and white balance. We’ll also review natural and artificial color and lighting to capture the mood and effect you want to convey in your images. This course is for photographers who are creating a portfolio, body of work, or have a specific idea or project they’d like to pursue. Our instructor will present a survey of photographers, along with tips and techniques for shooting. Each student will set up a site using the free WordPress.com service, then learn how to evaluate, choose the look and feel of the site, add text and photos, and use some specialized features. Along the way, we’ll cover the things you need to know to manage your own site, starting with the basics of HTML and what you’ll need to do to keep a site up and running safely.

Computer Programming with Graphics Applications (Java) Robin Verdier, Instructor We all use computers to run commercial programs like web browsers and word processors that take directions from us and —usually—do what we asked. This course teaches you to write your own programs using Java, which is among the best of contemporary computer languages and the preferred language for Android mobile applications. Java is pre-installed on most Macs, and is available free from Oracle for Mac and Windows. We’ll use Macs in the lab. The course concentrates on things that are sparsely covered in most available books, such as timers, random numbers, and graphics; the final study is of a program that creates beautiful, randomly-changing geometric designs. Quilting by Machine Susan Rae Downs, Instructor Quilting goes back hundreds of years and allows you to show off intricate designs, layered fabrics, and beautiful patterns.

Machine quilting allows you to create and complete your project much faster!

Through demonstrations and hands-on exercises, you’ll learn different techniques and styles for blending and matching colors and fabrics of various patterns. You can choose a project supplied by the instructor, or bring your own ideas: baby quilts, table runners, or place mats for less-experienced quilters, and larger projects if you’re more experienced. If sewing by machine is new to you, please plan to stay an extra 30 minutes at the end of the first two classes.

Silk Painting Workshop Nicole Donson, Instructor Design or paint it, wear, wrap or tie it.

Make your own beautifully hand-painted silk scarves. You’ll learn about various dyes and how how to mix colors. You’ll also get methods for fixing dyes, steaming or heat-setting your creations and patterns and practice techniques for painting on silk using steam-set dyes. You’ll paint three scarves; adding salt and alcohol, watch them create vibrant starburst effects. Our instructor will also discuss options for future silk painting projects. Handouts, silk, and dyes will be provided. Bring a smock.

Cafe Crochet: Beginners & Beyond Alix Ginsburg, Instructor What’s the difference between crochet and knitting? Crochet uses only one hook. It is that simple. Discover the fundamental skills that will allow you to expand your vision of what you can create from crochet.

You’ll learn several stitches and how to use them in different patterns. Expect to complete a scarf, baby afghan, dishcloth, table runner, or granny-square throw. Using the basic skills, you’ll then be able to move on to more elaborate projects. Learn the basics of this beautiful art form, as well its cultural background. Through demonstration and hands-on experience, you’ll make your own henna paste and applicators. Using various design techniques, you’ll learn how to create classic patterns and apply them to yourself and others.

Easily paired with other jewelry to create a slightly bohemian flavor, or worn alone for a more modern look, you’ll learn easy beading techniques and design your own leather wrap. These simple-to-wear, yet fashionable bracelets can be made in different shapes and sizes, with designs and materials to fit every whim. We’ll also discuss how you can make variations of this cool wrap band. Bring a shank button, and a 16” strand of 4-6 mm beads or a tube of size six seed beads. Jewelry Designing in Silver or Gold Lisa Sachs, Instructor Learn to use precious metal clay (PMC) for designing and producing your own silver and gold jewelry. Precious metal clays are soft malleable clays made by mixing an organic binding material with fine silver or gold. In clay form these precious metals are easy to mold, bend, stamp, and shape; in this class you’ll learn to make solid metal buttons, pendants, and jewelry components. Choose from a variety of nature-inspired and rugged designs, or work with our instructor to create your own unique piece, from simple necklaces or personalized pendants, to earrings, leather bracelets, and more. Glass Fusing Workshop Michel L’Huillier, Instructor Make art from glass as you master the basics of this beautiful craft. You’ll learn glass-fusing techniques and play with colored glass pieces, powders and frits, stringers and beads. After a series of exercises, you’ll design and make a 4”x 4” dish and one 8”x 8” plate, or 8” diameter bowl, using the learned techniques. Stained Glass Michel L’Huillier, Instructor Create a one-of-a-kind stained panel (about 1.5 square feet) using the copper foil method of assembling the glass pieces. Starting with an idea, you’ll develop it into a sketch and then a full-scale drawing. Your design will come to life through shapes, colors, and textures as you learn to cut, foil, and solder the glass from side to side. Our instructor has 20 years of experience in stained glass and fusing and loves to share his passion for glass.

Learn the many ways that cravings can arise: from a simple lack of sleep or sufficient liquids to eating in restaurants, hidden sugars in foods, and emotional needs. We’ll also examine issues that you bring to class, such as learning what a “holistic” approach means and discovering how to substitute natural sweets in your diet. Join us and get ready to reclaim your energy!

Real barbecue is wood-smoked—we’re not talking burgers and hotdogs. Blue Ribbon BBQ chef David Schaefer will teach the essentials for making the real thing. We’ll learn about the right cuts of meat, sauces, and seasonings to prepare world class, fall-off-the-bone barbecue. We’ll sample Memphis-style spareribs, Carolina-style pulled pork, and Texas beef brisket. Learn how to prepare these meats and some of the side dishes that complement them.

We’ll learn how to make marinades, rubs, brines, and sauces, and find out which ingredients are used for long, slow barbecue vs. high-temp grilling. This class will be mostly lecture and demo with some handson practice. (Real barbecue takes many hours to prepare, so we won’t complete the entire process.) A $10 food fee is included in the tuition. Unravel the mystery of Indian food. Learn about the ingredients and experience the colors and tastes of this flavorful cuisine as you prepare authentic Indian meals using local items. Each week we’ll prepare three dishes. Selections may include Palak Paneer (spinach with cheese), Masala Masoor (spicy lentil curry), Aloo-Gobhi (potatoes with cauliflower), Smoked Eggplant Curry, Jeera Rice (rice scented with cumin). Slow down, enjoy a night out, and learn about curry as you prepare delicious curried cuisine with a chef from the show, “Chopped”. Cooking with curry simply means any dish which has a richly spiced sauce. On the menu: Murg Rizzala, a green chicken korma curry made with nuts, spices and mint; Pork Vindaloo, a traditional delicacy from Goa, with a Portuguese influence of pork marinated with chilies, spices and flavored with Goa vinegar; Chicken Jalfrezi, a quick and easy chicken dish stir fried with spices and onions, peppers, and tomatoes; and Saag Gosht, a Punjabi delicacy made with meat, mustard greens and a touch of cream. Fiona Jensen is the Founder and Executive Director of Calmer Choice, a non-profit organization that brings Mindfulness programs into the schools of Cape Cod. Fiona is a tireless advocate for Mindfulness in education.

With Midge & Rick Kinder In 2001, the Kinders launched Wellness Works in Schools™ a program in which students and teachers learn Mindfulness skills and self-regulation strategies to address stress, learning readiness, trauma, and other important issues. This interactive presentation will be relevant to today’s diverse school environments.

Midge Kinder is an experienced teacher and registered yoga instructor who has taught Mindful Yoga classes and Mindfulness workshops for more than 20 years.

Doug Worthen teaches an introduction to Mindfulness course at the Middlesex School in Concord, Massachusetts. Living through two bouts of lymphoma, Doug has experienced firsthand the healing power of Mindfulness.

Spoken by one out of every five people in the world, Mandarin Chinese is a major world language. We’ll emphasize conversation, focusing on social situations and activities, such as dining out, shopping, and planning a trip. We’ll practice listening, speaking, reading, and pronunciation. Learn Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), the alphabet, vocabulary, and simple greetings, and get the basics to build on the language and its sounds. We’ll also discuss how Arab societies have two co-existing forms of the language: MSA, is the more formal version, which is studied in schools, read in newspapers, and understood across the Arab world. Introduction to Chakra Healing Denise Campo, Instructor If you’ve been feeling a little unbalanced lately, learn about Chakras, and how it can help you heal emotionally and physically.

There are seven main energy centers in our body known as chakras. These chakras interact with our endocrine glands and lymphatic system by feeding us with positive energy and disposing of unwanted energy. Occasionally our chakras become unbalanced and can wreak havoc on our bodies. We’ll review the physical and emotional problems related to each chakra and how you can balance them using, sound, herbs, flower essences, stones, crystals, food, mantras, and more. Through lectures and demonstrations, we will practice using these techniques to let the clearing begin.

Spring Herb Walks Katherine Gekas, Instructor Did you know that the weeds and trees in your yard can help you stay healthy?

Dandelions, chicory, and chickweed (to name just a few), can be eaten as food and used for everyday health maintenance. Join us and learn to identify plants and trees commonly used by herbalists today, and hear about traditional herbalism practices that make use of the plants and “medicinal trees” we spot along our way. We’ll look for Chicory, Chickweed, and Burdock on our first walk, and Nettle, Curly Dock, Evening Primrose, and Dandelions on our second.

Writing Poetry Workshop Matthew Sisson, Instructor This workshop will provide an engaging and entertaining environment where each participant, whether beginner or experienced writer, can have their work taken seriously, critiqued non-judgmentally, all with the goal of turning one’s self-expression into art. We will work on generating new ideas and new poetry, discuss the craft of poetry, and review the work of contemporary poets. As Mary Oliver points out in A Poetry Handbook, the creative imagination must be courted, and “it learns quickly what sort of courtship it is going to be.” If pursued with commitment, it will show up.

Writing a Memoir Judith Poole, Instructor The focus of memoir is on eliciting meaning, a theme, an emerging pattern, or a noteworthy incident, from a section of one’s life. The specificity of this focus sets it apart from autobiography, which spans one’s entire lifetime. Autobiography requires greater historical accuracy and follows a more linear progression starting with early years. In this class we will identify important turning points, and use them to launch our stories. We will give thought to the audience we aim to reach, and the impression we wish to leave with our potential readers. Participants will read published memoirs of their choice and discuss in class what qualities appealed to them (or not). Writing cues will be offered to keep the pen moving, and all will be encouraged (but not forced) to read stories aloud in class.

River Nature Tour

SAT 2 Biology Review Jordan Kraus, Instructor Prepare for the SAT Biology subject test.

We will distill the major themes taught in the year-long high school class into these four two-hour review sessions. This class is an overview, and is appropriate for students who are currently enrolled in, or have already completed a biology course. We will cover the following topics: basic biochemistry, cell structure and function, cellular transport, energy in living systems, cell reproduction, genetics, evolution, ecology, and major groups of living organisms, including plants and human systems. We’ll discuss test-taking strategies, give practice exams, and provide written review materials (no workbook required).

Driver’s Ed Newton Driving School, Instructors When you successfully complete a course in Driver’s Education, you can get your license before the age of 18. The course requires: • 30 hours of classroom instruction • a two-hour parent training session • 12 hours of driving instruction • six hours of driver observation time

You can enroll in Driver’s Ed classroom lessons at the age of 15 years 9 months, and begin road lessons at age 16 with a valid learner’s permit. Tuition includes all classroom and on-the-road time, as well as the $15 fee to the Registry of Motor Vehicles for a Certificate of Completion of Driver Education. Tuition does not include Registry fees for your permit and license.

Classes are held at the high schools; road lessons are scheduled between the student and the driving school. The City of Newton requires that our student drivers set up lesson times with a buddy; no student can drive alone with the instructor. A cancellation fee $30 applies if students cancel driving lessons with less than 24-hours notice, or arrive for driving lessons without a buddy, or without a permit. When you register, you’ll get a contract with Newton Driving School. You must fill out and sign the contract, and bring it to your first class.

On our last day we’ll travel around the world and make projects related to the different countries we visit. Walt Disney, here we come! Learn to draw characters from books, television, movies, and video games. With step-by-step instructions, you’ll work on some crazy characters, paying close attention to drawing hands, feet, and facial expressions. We’ll explore anime-style drawing as well, and create animated flip books of your drawings. Your final project will include handpainted animation cels of your favorite character to mount for display. From the functional to the whimsical, make just about anything you want from clay.

Learn handbuilding fundamentals, and techniques for creating pinch pots, slabs, coils, and sculptures; try some wheelthrowing too (it’s not as easy as it looks!). You’ll select your best pieces to glaze with the colors and patterns of your choice. This class includes lots of one-on-one expert guidance; you will work as an individual and in a group to explore, design, and refine your work. In this class, we will work on lots of techniques to help you draw the way you want to. You’ll learn about perspective, and how to draw faces, bodies, still-lifes, and landscapes. By the end of the week you should feel confident drawing a three-foot giraffe with stripes and a checkered tail driving down Route 9 in a yellow school bus—or anything else that you imagine. Bring an 8x10 sketchbook or drawing paper, regular and colored pencils, erasers, and markers too if you’d like. Grades 2–5.

Here’s a whole new outlet for your artistic creativity and imagination! Learn popular silk and fabric painting and decorating techniques using non-toxic colorfast dyes, fabric paints, markers, and more. You’ll mix colors, thicken dyes, print with rubber stamps, and use salt to make beautiful starbursts and dynamic patterns. Create original artwork to make iron-on designs, and finish off your work with colorful sequins, buttons, or embroidery. Make a scarf, sun-catcher, pillowcase, tote bag, or T-shirt—your choice of projects and styles is endless. Materials will be provided but you can bring fabric or clothing from home too. Wear old clothes or a smock to class.

It’s rock n’ roll, or it’s jazz, pop, or whatever you come up with—it’s Newton’s hottest new band, yet to be formed. Bring your instrument, or come ready to sing. We’ll play cover songs or your originals, and arrange them to showcase your talents.

We’ll choose repertoire, work on instrumentation and vocals, and record your work for posterity (or YouTube’s Top 40).

Public Speaking Boot Camp Kim Vanaman, Instructor Conquer your inner fears or unleash your inner ham. Gain the skills and confidence you need to successfully speak in public, whether it’s in class, at a meeting, or as a future speech competitor. Join our brand new theatre company and prepare to showcase your talents in our end-of-summer show. It may be an original show or a familiar one—that’s up to you.

In our two weeks together, you’ll work on theatre skills such as auditioning for parts, building characters, and memorizing lines.

You’ll rehearse scenes with your fellow cast members, learn about blocking and stage directions, and finally, perform for an eager audience of family and friends at our last class. All the world’s a stage and this is your cue! Grades 1–5.

Don’t throw it away! You can recycle your trash and use it to make really cool crafts.

In this class we’ll create great projects such as paper towel rainsticks, egg carton caterpillars, and recycled treasure boxes.

We’ll also melt old crayons and put them in molds to create new fun-colored ones. For inspiration we’ll read books like Harold and The Purple Crayon, Michael Recycle Meets Litterbug Doug, and Willow. It’s not just about art—it’s about saving the planet too.

3-D Sculpture Susan Paquette, Instructor Think beyond paper and pencil—it’s time to go 3-D! Use a wide variety of materials to make modern and fine art projects.

Create giant ice cream cones out of paper maché, construct modern sculptures of wire and wood, and design wearable cowboy/cowgirl hats and decoupage cereal box beach totes. Young Broadway Amanda Dodson, Instructor Ride your magic carpet to two weeks filled with games, acting, music, and movement.

We’ll explore the musical fantasy Aladdin, and everyone will perform different parts of this “diamond-in-the-rough” tale daily.

Using a variety of fabrics, paints, and other craft materials, we’ll work together to design costumes and scenery for the unbelievable sights of Aladdin and Jasmine’s whole new world. The wonderful music from this show will provide inspiration for us to stretch our bodies as well as our creativity. We will produce our own innovative version of the show to share with family and friends on our last day. Ages 4–8.

Have you ever wondered, “Do bees sneeze?” or “Do spiders sleep?” Have you always wanted to peer at a praying mantis? Learn the answers to these and other questions as we explore the wonderful world of invertebrates through games, books, bug crafts, current events, and, best of all, investigations using live bug visitors. Club Invention Judi Fitts, Director Enjoy high-energy activities that encourage inventive thinking and creative problem solving, while applying science, technology, engineering, math, and the arts. In Week 1, Innovate, you’ll investigate alternative energies such as wind, solar, and hydro power to design and build your own creations; explore math topics like tessellations and topology to see how math patterns and relationships translate to the real world; and become entrepreneurs as you rebuild a virtual world and restore its economy.

You’ll also use objects you bring from home to build new inventions. In Week 2, Morphed, you’ll build STEM skills while developing bionic gadgets and exploring sensory illusions; make morphing vehicles that operate on land, in the air, and underwater; and tinker with circuits to develop design solutions to nature-based challenges, inspired by video messages from the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

You’ll also take apart electronics from home and re-engineer their gears and gadgets to invent an epic, insect-themed pinball machine. In both weeks you’ll enjoy outdoor games and use available materials to create completely new games. Each week culminates in a presentation for family and friends. Kids will be grouped by age; we’ll try to place you with your friends if we get your requests by May 30. Grades 1–6. In this challenge-based workshop, you’ll repurpose items, using the engineering and design process to dream up something new, useful, fabulous, or just plain fun. This class is for kids who love nothing more than to build, create, and find practical applications for scientific discovery. Legopalooza: Robotics Revolution Wicked Cool for Kids staff, Instructors We-Do Robotics has undergone a Wicked Cool revolution! In addition to our favorite Lego “Adventure” robotics projects, we’ve added advanced open-ended STEM activities and engaging new challenges.

The We-Do Robotics system features Lego models that incorporate working motors and sensors with simple programming software. You’ll build and program spinning carousels, roller coasters, and ferris wheels; design carnival games and safety gates for a new take-home minifigure; and build a drawbridge to another Lego adventure.

Rocket Science Wicked Cool for Kids staff, Instructors

A perennial favorite returns! Trailblaze your way to the stars and learn about space, rocketry, and terraforming on alien planets.

Build and launch a solid-fuel scale model of the UP Aerospace SpaceLoft Rocket, a real rocket used by the world’s only private space launch company. In the morning, you’ll investigate the science of flight and examine how things move in the universe by tackling Newton’s laws of motion. In the afternoon the flight plan includes launching water rockets and designing an outer space station. The rocket launch takes place Friday morning, weather permitting.

Grades 1–4.

Check out serious science through a sampling of silly experiments and labs. Each day we’ll focus on a different science theme, and enjoy stories, nature hikes, and labs based on that theme. We’ll make oobleck, plant flowers, explore the properties of water, concoct elephant toothpaste, create pet rocks, and more. Ages 4–5.

Wicked Cool Vet School Wicked Cool for Kids staff, Instructors Animal lovers, grab a lab coat as we learn about our favorite furry, flying, and fishy friends. Make amazing animal models, build big bones, and investigate animal intestines from our favorite vertebrates: birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fish.

Dissect an owl pellet to discover its predator’s diet, and catch some invertebrates as we study insect exoskeletons and get into tiny worlds to look at animal cells and parasites. A special live animal visit (with tips for animal care and keeping pets healthy) ends the week. Grades 1–4.

Animated Superheroes Amanda Legere, Instructor Create an action-packed short story featuring a spectacular superhero, sassy sidekicks, and of course, a vicious villain. Apply your technology skills and turn your story into a slide show full of flashy images and exhilarating narration, captured to an iPad or desktop computer. We’ll study the art of superhero stories and learn what pertinent plot details you need to include in yours.

From there you’ll design a story map, craft characters (using images you find and/or create), and dazzle us with your own thrilling story.

Bootstrap: Practical Math for programming Video Games Bootstrap staff, Instructors Bootstrap is a computer programming course with a twist—come learn programming basics in the Racket language, and use your skills to program your own video game using algebraic and geometric concepts.

In this class, you will work through the Bootstrap 1 and 2 curricula, learning solid program design skills such as: stating input and types, writing test cases, explaining code to others, and becoming familiar with functions and variables. Throughout the course, you will put your knowledge into action to create a computer game of your own design.

Make your own TV production based on your ideas and imagination. Kids run the show here: you’ll roll the cameras, run the control room, be the actors, and most importantly, create the program content and write the script. You’ll learn the basics of TV production, including camerawork and lighting, and get expert instruction with scriptwriting and acting as well. We’ll work together to create our masterpiece, and the finished show will be broadcast on NewTV. New and returning students welcome.

Expand your creative and technical knowledge and learn to build your own website.

Get step-by-step instructions on working with HTML, the most common Web programming language. You’ll design a simple website on a topic of your choice, sketching a site map, choosing images, creating text, organizing files, and including links to other sites you’d like to reference. You’ll use the Web as your primary source for images, but bring other materials that you’d like on your site too (and a camera or iPad if you wish).

Come with access to a Gmail account, which you will need for building your website.

Music Masterpieces with GarageBand Caleb Cutler, Instructor If you’re a musician (instrumental or vocal) or just someone who’s interested in music and technology, this class is for you. Learn the inner workings of GarageBand to lay down original tracks or use existing loops, incorporate jam packs or other sound effects, export your original music, and more.

We’ll discuss what makes a good song, both instrumental and vocal, and we’ll work on our own songs individually or in groups.

You’ll finish the week with a CD of the projects everyone in the group has completed. Bring your instrument if you have one, but don’t worry if you’re not a musician. New and returning students welcome.

Sports Archery Delicious Bow & Arrows staff, Instructors Fun fact: Newton was host to the nation’s first organized archery team, The Newton Archers, circa 1935. Honoring that legacy, NCE is pleased to offer this still-popular sport. Archery is a great option for those who prefer a noncompetitive individual sport to team sports. Certified instructors from Delicious Bow & Arrows (formerly Archery USA) will determine your dominant eye, explain the rules, and get you started, providing individualized instruction throughout the class. Archers will learn technique, form, and accuracy. Equipment is provided. All levels welcome. Grades 3 and up.

Learn fundamental football skills from our enthusiastic coaches. Each day we’ll focus on a “skill of the day” such as passing, catching, running, and offensive/defensive strategies. Soccer will be our core sport, but unique games and activities will also be part of the mix, creating a fun, appropriately competitive atmosphere. Our enthusiastic coaches will teach you proper skills, rules, and tips for each sport; they’ll also referee, assure maximum playing time for each athlete, and kick off our final-day tournmant each week. You’re never too young to learn to play and T-Ball’s the way. You’ll learn individual skills such as batting and catching, and get an introduction to aspects of regular baseball. We’ll also play non-traditional games and activities to encourage skills development and create a fun, supportive atmosphere. Wear sneakers, and bring a baseball glove and a water bottle. Camp will be held indoors if it rains. Ages 3–6.

Why should big kids have all the fun?

Toddlers, accompanied by an adult, can learn the basics of soccer in this fun, noncompetitive environment. Players will increase their sense of balance, improve their coordination and physical movement, and have a leg up when they join the big leagues!

Wear sneakers and bring a soccer ball and water bottle. Classes will run unless there’s pouring rain; call Thundercat Sports at 781507-6182 if you are uncertain. Ages 2–3 with an adult (one child per adult please).
