Saturday Classes!

Working in a collage style that she calls fragmented realism, Newton artist Betsy Silverman trains her eye upon discarded magazines. She selects, cuts, and glues them to a canvas, in order to transform the old images and text into unique, multidimensional, representations of New England—especially the Boston area. She delights in the challenge of fashioning a new image, while preserving bits and pieces of the paper’s former representation—its individual memory. Betsy holds a Master of Architecture degree, and is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. Her work is infused with an architectural sensibility; she employs perspective, light and shadow, reflections, and contrasting the sizes of various elements, so as to create a sense of depth. Betsy chooses each recycled paper remnant for its hue, value, saturation, image content (you will find Red Sox players and other regional visual references throughout her artwork), and textual relationship to the subjects of her work.

Do what you love or learn something new on a Saturday this fall.

Betsy is active in the local art community and finds inspiration through classes offered by regional institutions, including Newton Community Education.

fall 2017 featured teacher Michel L’Huillier Bonjour! I usually start my classes this way. First, to confirm what students may have guessed: I’m from France. And second, to start a dialogue about languages, travel, cultures, and foods, among other things.

I studied fine art and art history in France and worked at a glass studio there before moving to Boston in 1995 with my American bride. I apprenticed here in a prominent stained glass studio, and later took classes at the Corning Museum in New York and at Bullseye Glass Studio in Portland, Oregon. Since 2000 I’ve been working on custom residential and commercial commissions in stained and/or fused glass. I also exhibit fused glass objects at regional craft shows, and in December 2015 my work was honored with the Award of Distinction in Glass at Craft Boston.

I’ve been with NCE since 2009, sharing my passion for glass by teaching fusing, stained glass, mosaic, and jewelry. I want to inspire my students as my teachers across the world inspired me—glass is a world with no walls between continents and disciplines. So come share your stories with me. Maybe you’ll create a single window or plate, and then come back to experiment again, or even be inspired to start your own studio, as one of my NCE students did!

Jeff has a super interesting background (including a stint at the McMurdo Research Station in Antarctica!), so I knew he’d be a great fit for our diverse learning community.

with Zhanna Cantor (page 5) What I admire most about Zhanna is her gentle way of sharing her passion and knowledge of art, and how committed she is to our program. She started at NCE in the fall of 2006 and has developed a large following. Her students consistently praise her patient manner and the art they produce is stunning! Everyone’s heard of Zumba, but when I got a proposal to offer BollyX, I was intrigued. We started with one class a few years ago, but so many folks wanted more that we added another, of the low-impact variety. We’ve heard nothing but raves about the music, the exercise, and the instructors Lakshmi and Shamila.

ACTIVE BYSTANDER TRAINING

with Rona Fischman (page 25) After I read an article in the Globe about this, I knew I wanted to offer a class for NCE. We get a cross-section of the community at NCE, and I liked the idea of a group working together in a program like this. Rona is a terrific facilitator, and she helps you find a response that works for you. It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach, and I love that.

WHAT IS 3-D PRINTING, ANYWAY?

with John Walsh (page 41) John Walsh owns five, count ‘em, FIVE, 3-D printers, and loves to introduce people to what they are and how to use them.

This involves learning to code, but the software he recommends is super easy— and free! You can print a cell phone stand, a mini-figure, a hook for the wall... the possibilities are endless. And, his enthusiasm is contagious. (Also look for John’s 3-D Printing Design & Build class also on page 41.)

When it comes to science and technology classes, the teacher isn’t all that matters.

That teacher needs to start with really solid curriculum. When I met Jake, Circuit Lab’s owner/founder, I knew I could trust him to offer some great, current ideas for Kids classes. I have been proven right!

Jake’s Hands-on Electronics and Creative Computing classes have been big hits with us, and I know kids will love his new App Inventors class too.

Watercolor Painting for Beginners Gary Tucker, Instructor Experience the joy of watercolor on paper.

We’ll explore the fundamentals and surprises of painting with watercolors as well as the variety of techniques available to the watercolorist. Through instructor demonstrations and a series of painting exercises, you’ll develop your own style as you become more comfortable painting with this media. Basic Drawing Gary Tucker, Instructor Drawing, the most approachable form of visual art, is an excellent precursor to painting, illustration, web design, animation, and more. It is also satisfying and challenging on its own. Through the practice of drawing we learn to see the world around us—and then interpret it. Our instructor will provide demonstrations and exercises in basic design using line, contour, shape, texture, composition, shadow and light. Each week you’ll work from a different still life. In addition, there will be homework assignments and weekly critiques. New and returning students welcome.

The Impressionist movement, which included artists such as Monet, Renoir, and Pissaro, developed in France during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The genre is characterized by the way artists render reflected light using small strokes of bold color. Students will receive individualized instruction to develop at their own pace.

Botanical Drawing Melissa Kulig, Instructor See the world in a new light and then draw it. Botanical drawing is the art of careful observation inspired by the natural world around us. We’ll use flowers, leaves, seed pods, and other organic objects as our subject matter. You’ll work on strengthening your powers of observation, and develop drawing skills to render shape, texture, size, and proportion with greater confidence. By the end of class, you’ll have a small portfolio of drawings you can frame as fine art or use as a basis for a continued edition of prints.

All levels welcome.

Bring a plant or flower, and two leaves to the first class along with a pad of 9x11 drawing paper, a 2H and 4B drawing pencil, a portable pencil sharpener, and a kneadable (gray) eraser.

Still Life with Watercolors

Portrait Painting with Acrylics

Explore landscape and still-life painting using watercolors. We’ll sketch and paint flowers, fruits, bowls and vases, to gain an understanding of light, form, and dimension.

Through layering and color-mixing exercises, you’ll develop skills to capture the unique aspect of transparency in watercolor. We’ll also discuss the techniques of great watercolor artists such as Sargent and Turner, and modernists such as Klee and Nolde. New and returning students welcome.

Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Register early so you don’t miss out!

Jack Neylan, Instructor Acrylic is a relatively new medium in the history of painting, but its vibrancy of color and ability to dry quickly make it perfect for portrait painting. Portraiture is an essential and universal form of art and we will focus on portrait painting through the medium of acrylic paint in this class. We’ll look at both classical and contemporary works of art and examine what qualities make an effective portrait. We’ll also work from reproductions of famous paintings and photographs, and will have one session with a guest model.

For a final project, you’ll create a painting based on a photograph of your choosing.

A $5-$10 model fee is payable to the instructor. A materials list will be emailed to students.

Classical Drawing Jack Neylan, Instructor In traditional art schools of the 19th century, you would take a classical drawing class in which the human figure was carefully studied and emphasis was placed on realistic renderings and drawing proportionally. That type of schooling took years, but we aim to give you an encapsulated and entertaining version in just a few weeks. We’ll work with graphite and charcoal as you begin recreating master drawings and anatomical studies, then drawing from sculptures, and gradually working towards drawing a live model.

A model fee of $5-$10 is payable to the instructor.

Introduction to Pastel Drawing Cyrus Whittier, Instructor Whether you work in fine detail or more broadly, join us and learn about linear strokes, cross-hatching, scumbling, feathering, and blending. There will be plenty of demonstrations to guide you along the way as you practice your technique on a wide variety of subjects from flowers to metal objects. Expect to progress from a restricted palette to full color compositions, focusing on how to identify and adjust the colors you observe. All levels, new and returning students welcome.

Oil Painting for Beginners Jack Neylan, Instructor Oil paint is a fluid medium; the paint is slow to dry and easy to blend, so you can make changes as your work evolves. In this class you’ll learn the basic color wheel and how to properly mix paints. Starting with still-life painting, moving to abstract, and working towards live-model painting, you’ll develop new skills and gain a solid understanding of this medium. We’ll use linseed oils and stand oils as you explore on canvas, linen, and wood, and you’ll learn the proper precautions when using turpentine mixes. All levels welcome. Acrylic painters are welcome too.

Bring a small cotton canvas, paint brush and a selection of paints. Other materials will be discussed at the first class.

Mixed Media Melissa Kulig, Instructor Learn a new art-making technique each week to create whimsical artwork for your home. You’ll combine materials such as acrylic paint, colored pencil, fabric, and wood to produce unique creations. We’ll explore methods including Xerox transfer, acrylic paint texturing, collage layering, stamping, stenciling, and more. You will leave class with several personal pieces ready for hanging.

Colored pencils empower the artist to create works that incorporate aspects of both drawing and painting. In this class, we will work with simple still life set-ups to study key concepts for handling the medium in a relaxed, non-competitive atmosphere. Basic drawing skills are recommended but not required.

New and returning students welcome.

Whether you’re planning a career in book illustration, want to add pictures to your own book, or just curious about the process, join us to learn how to illustrate a story of your own choosing. We’ll go through the process of developing small “thumbnails” into more finished sketches for a “dummy” book. We’ll discuss pacing; character-and book-design; and choosing your color palette, medium, and style. Bring a completed story (yours or another writer’s), and a book or two that you admire to the first class. Returning students are welcome to continue their projects in the second four weeks of class.

Chinese Brush Painting Michelle Yu, Instructor Chinese brush painting originated thousands of years ago, earlier than the Chinese invention of paper. The Ancient Chinese painted with bamboo sheets, silk cloth, and rice paper. Today, artists are constantly adding to these time-tested techniques. Varying gradients of three items: paper, ink and a brush, generate designs in thousands of manners. Learn to paint peony, bamboo, lily and pine, birds, and mountains. Through instructor demonstration and in-class participation, you’ll also learn how to manipulate ink and watercolors in order to create wonderful visual effects and develop your own style and interpretation of this beautiful craft. All levels welcome.

Photography Take Better Pictures with your Digital Camera Steve McGrath, Instructor If you’re just getting to know your digital camera and its features, take this opportunity to learn from an expert. Learn how and when to use your camera’s special settings such as program and manual modes, aperture, and shutter priority. We’ll also discuss basic composition and how to best use light for different situations, such as shooting plants, people, extreme close-ups, and landscapes. Handouts provided.

Sculpting Paul Angiolillo, Instructor Learn sculpting basics and make original and engaging one-of-a-kind sculptures. Bring your own materials—wood, stones, found objects, curiosities from your home—and design and assemble them into works of art.

A set of old bowls might become a dramatic or whimsical sculpture for a living room or foyer; some eye-catching objects might turn into a mobile, wall relief, or even a garden sculpture. Our instructor will provide tools and other equipment, and demonstrate various techniques for joining and mounting sculptures. You’ll work both with guidance and independently. Come prepared to be creative—because anything can happen with sculpture! All levels welcome.

Along with your own materials, you can bring favorite tools or equipment, like clippers, shears, a sanding block, or wire.

Better Family Photos Tira Khan, Instructor How often do you think you’re taking a great picture, only to find the photo did not turn out as you intended? Family life is rich with photographic opportunities, and you can learn to capture those moments effectively. In the first class, we’ll cover the basics of composition, lighting, and exposure, and we’ll discuss where to stand for your photo and what moments are best to capture. In the second class, we’ll look at your work. This class does not cover how to use your camera.

Bring your charged camera, and two family photographs you’re proud of along with two you don’t like, and leave with a new approach to photography for better future results.

Digital Photography: Beyond Beginner Steve McGrath, Instructor Learn how to operate your camera in semi-automatic and manual modes and create sharp, high quality images with the appropriate depth of field. You’ll discover how to choose the right combination of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO as we examine how to use light in challenging situations and create interesting photos.

Other technical aspects will be addressed including exposure compensation, light metering, and autofocus. We’ll also discuss how to best compose images for maximum artistic effect. The emphasis will be on outdoor photography; there will be plenty of opportunity to present your photography for group critique and analysis. Prerequisite: our Intro to Digital Photography class or comparable experience.

Digital Photography: Using Any Smartphone or Tablet

Intro to Darkroom Photography (Saturday) Danielle Larosee, Instructor Digital photography is fast and easy, but film photography is an art. Join us to learn how that art happens in the darkroom. You’ll expose, develop, and print your photographs using film cameras and traditional black and white materials. In the first class we’ll shoot and make practice prints; in the second class you’ll delve deeper into the printing process. You’ll leave with new technical skills and knowledge, photo prints you can be proud of, and enhanced appreciation for this undying art form. Expect homework.

All levels welcome.

A $15 materials fee is payable in class. Bring your own 35mm camera, two rolls of black and white film, and any film you may have that you’d like to develop.

Approximately 190 million people speak French as a second language. Traveler’s French will give you confidence communicating for an upcoming trip or just for fun. It will prepare you to use simple, conversational French effectively. We’ll focus on developing speaking and listening skills (we won’t spend much time on formal grammar). Coffee starts as a seed, grows into a cherry from which the bean gets picked, roasted, and ground for your pleasure. Learn about coffee’s complex supply chain. First we’ll discuss issues of globalization, climate change, food insecurity, and human rights.

We’ll also explore the history of coffee’s popularity, consider how this affects coffee’s future, and taste decaf coffees. In the second class you’ll learn three methods to brew the perfect cup, and read labels to pick the one that’s right for you. Good news for chocolate lovers: organic dark chocolate can improve your libido and it has other important health benefits too. Want to learn more? Come discuss chocolate’s history, the basics of chocolate processing, why processed milk chocolate is different for our bodies than dark chocolate, and why the percentage of cacao in your chocolate bar may not be a sign of its nutritional content. Science of Cooking: Caramel, Taffy, Brittle TBA, Instructor From tender fudge to chewy taffy to brittle lollipops, sugar is the culinary chameleon in most beloved confections. Its shape-shifting properties are coaxed by the application of heat. At low temperatures, it dissolves into liquid to make syrup; add heat and it progresses through the candy stages from thread to hard crack. Add a little too much heat and it burns into pure charcoal. Learn what’s happening at the molecular level in the candy stages as we make salted caramels, vanilla almond nougat, lemony taffy, and chocolate covered toffee in our kitchen lab.

Northern Indian cooking was transformed under their regime; the Mogul banquet of kebabs and biryanis was adopted with equal emphasis on presentation as well as taste. South Indian Cooking Shruti Mehta, Instructor South Indian food remains a secret to much of the world. Unlike the cuisine of the north, South Indian cuisine is distinguished by a greater emphasis on rice as the staple grain, and the liberal use of coconut oil and curry leaves. It is even more vegetarian-friendly than North Indian cooking and incorporates simpler ingredients. Join us to explore this cuisine; you’ll learn to make Medu Vada (deep fried black lentil balls), served with a spicy lentil and vegetable soup called Sambar. We’ll begin with a visit to Chesterwood—the fabulous country home, studio, and gardens of America’s foremost sculptor, Daniel Chester French. (You may know of him as the man who designed the Lincoln Memorial in DC and the Minuteman Statue in Concord.) We’ll next head to the quaint village of Stockbridge, where you’ll have time to shop, explore, and have lunch on your own. After lunch we’ll visit the Norman Rockwell Museum, where you can view the world’s largest and most significant collection of Rockwell’s work—including 998 original paintings and drawings! Self Protection for Women Harold Curtis, Instructor Learn basic skills to avoid or escape from dangerous situations. We’ll start by discussing how your body reacts to stress, then learn to recognize and manage that stress, and control fear. We’ll establish what constitutes your personal space, and learn to set boundaries and recognize the most common “grabs”. You’ll discover how to use your voice and body language to diffuse a situation, and we’ll practice striking a man in a protective suit so you can feel the effect of your blows and practice your self-defense skills. A colorful character with a highly romantic life story, Da Ponte was just the man to flout convention. When The Marriage of Figaro was first presented in Vienna, it caused a great stir. Never before had contemporary people with contemporary problems been treated in opera. Following Figaro came Don Giovanni and finally, Cosi fan Tutte. Join us as we explore the lives of these two and the still mind-bending works they created. No knowledge of opera needed.

Fiber Arts: Silk Painting & Wet Felting Nicole Donson, Instructor If you admire hand-made textured fabric wearables in boutiques and craft shows, why not make your own? The first soaps were likely made by accident—some lard spilled on a cooking fire, reacted with wood ash, and voila! Although the process of saponification (making soap) has since been perfected, the basic principles remain the same. Join us to learn two different techniques for making soap. You’ll work with coconut, olive, and palm oils and have some options of fancy oils and fragrances to add in as well such as shea butter and lavender. You’ll take home 10 or more bars, perfect for pampering yourself or giving as gifts.

If you have broken costume jewelry: necklaces, bracelets that are missing parts, or single earrings from a once-favorite pair, join us and turn those pieces into something new. This is not a jewelry repair class, but with extra jewelry findings provided by the instructor, you’ll learn to remake your old or broken baubles into a unique creation or design. Expect to leave class with original pieces you will love wearing once again!

Turn glass into art as you master the basics of this beautiful craft. You’ll learn glass-fusing techniques and design with colored glass pieces, powders and frits, stringers, and beads. After a series of exercises, you’ll design and make a 4”x 4” dish and one 8”x 8” plate, or 8” diameter bowl, using the learned methods. You’ll also create fused jewelry such as necklaces or pins. The finished projects will be available for pickup at the NCE office within a week of class. Materials and tools will be provided. No experience necessary.

Make jewelry in just three classes. First, we’ll craft beaded bracelets and discuss supplies and tools for more projects. In the second class we’ll focus on necklaces, and in the last class we will design earrings. You’ll learn key jewelry-component terms, where to buy tools and how to use them. We’ll also review which kinds of clasps and stringing materials to use and the mechanics of putting all the pieces together. A memory wire or elastic will be provided.

Make a mini-mosaic inside a deep pendant using a wide selection of precut colored glass pieces. Choose from a variety of glass shapes, and a silver or gold plated pendant to make your design. Once the glass pieces are glued to the metal, you’ll grout your pendants with one of the many colored grouts available. Clean your pieces, add the provided black leather cord necklace, and in no time you’ll have a beautifully unique piece of jewelry to wear. Our instructor will provide tools, glass, grout, and other materials for two pendants.

Starting with an idea, you’ll develop it into a sketch and then a full-scale drawing. Join us for a woodsy, docent-led garden tour at Arnold Arboretum. As we walk offroad, up and down the verdant hills, we’ll consider the Arboretum before it was an arboretum including some glacial history.

We’ll discuss his design intent, along with some mid-19th century fun facts.

Fruits and vegetables are the foundation of a healthy diet. These days we’re told to eat local and/or organic food, but do you really know what that means or why it’s so important? In this class we’ll discuss the variety of choices available to you and how to select the most nutritious options for your diet. You’ll learn what it really means to be organic, how organic pesticides work, and how to choose your produce, both on the farm and in the supermarket. It’s not as straightforward as you might think.

Managing Photos on Apple Devices Howard Loewinger, Instructor If you’re like the rest of us, you have digital photos saved on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac computer but you don’t have a strategy for managing them. Learn how the iPhone and iPad organize photos for you and how you can organize photos for yourself and share them in a variety of ways. We’ll go over storage locations—whether on your device or in the “cloud” and we’ll look at the various editing tools. You’ll import photos onto a Mac and use the Photos app on that computer to see what further options are available including making books, calendars, cards, and ordering prints from Apple.

Family Night Under the Stars Clay Center Observatory staff, Instructors Learn all about space science from astronomy experts at the Clay Center Observatory in Brookline (www.claycenter.org). On this family night just for NCE students, you’ll learn about stars and constellations, touch real meteorites, see parts from the space shuttle, and view a 3-D show in which you’ll feel like you’re standing at the edge of a crater on Mars. Walk among the stars on the Clay Center’s fiber-optic lit stars court, and take in a panoramic view of Boston from their roof deck. Finally, tour the state-ofthe-art observatory and point the telescope towards the planets, moon, and stars. We start promptly at 6:30 pm; latecomers may miss something exciting. The show goes on unless there’s pouring rain; call 617-7513409 if you’re uncertain. Ages 7 and up with an adult.

Why should big kids have all the fun?

Toddlers, accompanied by an adult, can learn the basics of soccer in this fun, noncompetitive setting. Players will increase their sense of balance, improve their coordination and physical movement, and have a leg up when they join the big leagues! Event-FULL staff, Instructors Cause an eruption! Model volcanoes are staples at science fairs and also make a great family activity for kids who are curious about earth science and chemistry. You and your adult partner will build your own non-toxic volcano complete with colorful lava flows and bubbling mineral pools.

Then, of course, you’ll make it erupt. We’ll snap a picture of your pair with your volcano, and you’ll take it home framed to display to visiting wannabe volcano eruptors.

Expect to get messy, so dress appropriately.

Soccer for Moms Thundercat Sports staff, Instructors Soccer is great exercise, lots of fun, and not just for kids. This class is for moms who have been watching their kids play soccer and want in on the action themselves, or for any other grown-up girl who wants to play the game. Thundercat Sports coaches will provide the equipment, officiate the games, and give pointers to help improve your skills. In this class, you’ll learn basic 3-D computer-aided design (CAD) principles and use BlocksCAD software to create unique, three-dimensional designs. Think it’s easy making one of those dancing bears or blinking eyes you see online? You’re right! Join us to get all the tools you need.

Start by making a simple drawing using Photoshop, using coloring, layering, and other effects to make dazzling art. Then create a cast of characters, draw/paint a background for them to inhabit, and transition them into a simple four-panel digital comic.

Next, get a brief history of animation shorts, from Gertie the Dinosaur to contemporary Pixar shorts. You’ll create a concept for your own short animation and learn frame animation in Photoshop to complete your film, adding sound too, if time allows. Bring a USB flash drive to class. Grades 3-5.

Java Coding with Minecraft Modding Einstein’s Workshop staff, Instructors Minecraft fans: join us to learn programming basics in Java to write your own Minecraft “mods.” Mods (modifications) add content to the game to alter game play, change the creative feel, and give you more options for interacting with the Minecraft world. If you studied Latin this past year as a 7th grader and want to continue your studies, are an 8th grader new to Latin and want to make up for lost time, or are a student in any grade just eager to learn the eternal language, this class is for you. We’ll cover quite a bit of ground, with a focus on the fundamentals of the Latin language—vocabulary, grammar, and syntax (how words are arranged to convey meaning)—rather than on Roman culture and history. Learn the language that’s at the root of all romance languages. You’ll study the Latin language and explore Roman culture in a fun, engaging environment.

Yoga for Middle Schoolers Judi Mackenzie, Instructor Complement your academics and extracurriculars with this energizing class. We’ll gear the sequencing of our positions towards creating a sense of community and helping you learn to use yoga in your everyday life.

Fencing International Fencing Club staff, Instructors En garde! Learn the sport made famous by action movies and the Olympics. Thundercat Sports staff, Instructors Perfect for the sports lover, our Multi Sports class (formerly Sports Jam) focuses on Soccer, Basketball, and Field Hockey. In addition to these sports, you’ll enjoy familiar and unique games such as Dodgeball, Capture the Flag, and Car Lot. At each session we’ll introduce new skills and play games that reinforce those skills. The program culminates with a tournament day. Grades K-2.

We’ll meet at the Mason Rice playground as school is dismissed, walk together to the field, and enjoy a picnic lunch before class starts (please bring your own lunch). Flag Football Thundercat Sports staff, Instructors Learn fundamental football skills from our enthusiastic coaches. Each day we’ll focus on a “skill of the day” such as passing, catching, running, and offensive/defensive strategies.

We’ll enjoy a scrimmage at the end of each class so you can apply your new skills, using flags only, no tackling. New and returning athletes are welcome; we’ll build on skills you’ve learned and introduce new ones too.

Ultimate Frisbee Thundercat Sports staff, Instructors No longer just for beach goers, Ultimate Frisbee is now one of the fastest growing sports in America and right here in Newton.

It’s safe yet exciting, and it’s great for conditioning, speed, and agility training. But most of all, it’s incredibly fun! Whether you’ve never thrown a frisbee or are an Ultimate veteran, our program is for you.

We’ll focus on learning the game and mastering skills by using some fun and engaging drills, but mostly we’ll just play, while our coaches guide the way to better performance. Wear cleats or sneakers and bring a water bottle and snack. Class will be held indoors if it rains. Grades 3-6.

ACT Prep Summit Educational Group staff, Instructors The ACT is the college-readiness standardized test of choice in most of our country, and it is steadily gaining in popularity here in Massachusetts. It is accepted by all colleges and may be a better choice for some students. The ACT tests math, science, reading, and writing (the writing portion of the test is optional). We are pleased to partner with Summit Educational Group to offer a comprehensive program that covers all sections of the ACT exam. We will cover fundamental academic skills like algebra, critical reading, and grammar, as well as essential test-taking strategies. The class includes an initial diagnostic practice exam followed by 12 hours of classroom instruction and a second practice exam. All materials are provided.

NCE/NAA YOUTH BASKETBALL NCE is happy to partner with the Newton Athletic Association (NAA), Newton’s largest youth basketball program. Leagues are for players in grades 3–12; the program is for all players regardless of ability or experience. (High school JV or varsity players may not participate.) Boys are in the majority, but girls are welcome to play in all leagues. A mandatory evaluation clinic is held in late October to assist in creating balanced teams. Practices are one night per week (Monday–Thursday and possibly Friday or Sunday) beginning in November and running through mid-March. Teams play 10 to 12 games on Saturdays and/or Sundays, depending on their age/league. The number of games, when and where they are played, and practice locations, may also vary by grade level. League information and online registration will be available by September 5.

The college selection and recruiting process starts much earlier for you and can be complex and time-consuming. Our instructor is here to tell you that there is a college for every student-athlete who wants to earn a college degree while playing his or her favorite sport. Join us for an overview of the college search and recruiting process and learn to successfully navigate the maze of issues facing the student-athlete. You’ll learn about the differences between Divisions I, II, and III; the NCAA Clearinghouse and national Letter of Intent; and the benefits of playing a sport in college. POLICIES Access Our classes are open to everyone. Let us know if you have any special concerns or need special assistance.

Age Requirements Adult classes are open to students 18 years of age and older. Age requirements for Kids classes are listed per class.

Gift Certificates Gift certificates are available in any amount and can be used for any class we offer.

Parking For Evening Classes Free parking is available in lots at both high schools. There is additional parking on neighborhood streets; please pay attention to all official street signs, as parking laws are enforced.

Permissions

NCE reserves the right to cancel classes that are under-enrolled, and to change times, locations, and instructors when necessary.

We may occasionally post your work to our website or take pictures of students in our classes to use in promotional materials. Your enrollment in a class indicates your approval for this.

Discounts

Refunds/Withdrawals

We offer a 15% discount to seniors (age 65+), veterans, and employees of the City of Newton. The discount is available on most of our classes, but only if you register by phone and let us know at the time of registration.

ELL, one-session, couples’ rate classes, and other select classes are excluded. Discounts do not apply to materials, food fees, or our Kids classes, and can not be combined.

For our adult, and school-year Kids classes, you must withdraw at least seven days before the class start date printed in our catalog to receive either a refund minus a $10 processing fee, or a credit-on-account minus a $5 fee.

The $6 registration fee is non-refundable. No other refunds or credits will be given, unless we cancel your class, in which case you’ll receive a full refund. To withdraw from a class, call us during office hours; we do not process

withdrawals by email. There are no partial refunds for student absences, scheduling conflicts, or weather-related closings.

Scholarships Partial scholarships are available on a limited basis for Newton residents. Please call 617559-6999 for more information.

Trial Classes Sorry, we do not offer trial classes.

Weather Cancellations If Newton public schools are closed due to inclement weather, our classes that run in school buildings are cancelled. Decisions about off-site classes are made individually; check your class listing on our website.

Classes cancelled due to weather will be made up at the end of the term; there will be no refunds for weather-related closings.

Getting To Class

Locations

It is our expectation that students in our classes will follow their teacher’s instructions.

Students are expected to be respectful of their teachers and peers. Students must use only materials designated for their NCE class and use them appropriately. If your child does not meet these expectations, we will communicate with you to discuss his or her behavior.

If after two such communications your child’s behavior has not improved, we will ask you to withdraw your child from the class and no refund will be given. If your child exhibits threatening physical behavior towards others in the class, he or she will be withdrawn immediately and no refund will be given.

Kids at each school typically walk themselves to our classes, but younger kids are sometimes escorted by their classroom teachers; please check with your child’s school and/ or teacher. NCE teachers arrive when school ends (12:30 on Tuesdays, and 3:00 on all other days). On Tuesdays, kids eat lunch between 12:30 and 12:45, and on other days they usually have a snack (you must provide your own lunches and snacks). Kids from all schools are welcome at all our classes. School secretaries are at their desks until 3:30 each day and can buzz in kids arriving for NCE classes from other schools.

Please respect our staff and pick up your child on time. There is a $10 fee for every 10 minutes you’re late. At the fourth occurrence, these fees will double.

Pick-Up After Class At the end of class, our teachers will bring all kids to the main entrance of the school to be picked up by parents, guardians, or after-school staff. Kids in grades K-2 must be signed out by an adult; kids in grades 3-5 can dismiss themselves with written permission from a parent or guardian. Sweet Martha!

If you closely follow these pages, you’ll know we recently said good-bye to Carmella Mack, our longest-serving NCE employee. But our sadness is softened by the recent arrival of Martha Sweet, who has stepped in to fill Carmella’s shoes. Martha has a fun, storied career: she was the first owner of the fabulous Breadsong Bakery in Auburndale, before selling it to her employees and becoming the Director of Operations for Mass Farmers Markets. She brings a wealth of business experience to her new position at NCE, which should serve her well as she takes on our financial operations. Martha’s presence at NCE comes with perk for the rest of us: frequent visits by her three lovely kids, all students at North; occasional evidence of her cooking/baking expertise; and all the info you could ask for regarding farmers markets in MA. Welcome Martha!
