The Marrying Kind

The Snell Family Park ficus tree, a sprawling giant that has shaded the park in Fort Myers, Fla., for more than a century, played the part of groom to several brides on March 24 as Karen Cooper and others tried to save it from being cut down. The News-Press reported that while its roots are on the park property, some of the limbs in the tree’s 8,000-square-foot canopy extend to an adjacent property that is for sale, and potential buyer Jeff Romer was concerned about his liability for the tree’s upkeep. In December, Fort Myers’ public works officials approved the removal of the tree, prompting protests from Cooper and others. She got the idea of marrying the tree from women in Mexico who have been protesting deforestation. “I thought, ‘Oh, we should marry the ficus tree’ — kind of giggle, giggle.”

A city spokeswoman said the city is moving ahead to save the newlywed tree, but Cooper is worried that the decision is not final. “If they cut down this tree, I’m going to be a widow.”

Smooth Reaction

Sonny Donnie Smith, 38, of Clackamas, Ore., was feeling snubbed in September 2016 when both his father and his brother were invited to a family wedding, but Sonny wasn’t. As a perfectly reasonable revenge, Sonny made anonymous phone calls to McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas and the Midland International Air and Space Port in Midland, Texas, claiming that his father and brother were terrorists and would be traveling through the airports. An FBI investigation revealed no terrorist threats, and after interviewing the father and brother, they were both released. On Feb. 1, Sonny Smith pleaded guilty to making the calls, according to The Oregonian, and will be sentenced on May 10.

Why They Call It Dope

Arielle Bonnici, 26, of Huntington, N.Y., responsibly arrived at the Northport Police Department and Village Justice Court on Dec. 4 to answer a summons issued last May for possession of marijuana. But before she could even park her car, Bonnici, who was on her phone, attracted the attention of officers by cutting off an unmarked police vehicle and wheeling into the spot reserved for the chief of police. The Long-Islander News reported that when officers approached the car and Bonnici rolled down her window, a cloud of marijuana smoke poured out, and she was promptly arrested for possession again, along with getting a ticket for using her cellphone while driving. She was able to kill two buds, er, birds, with one stone and appear before the court for both charges.

Irony Defined

As the 2018 Winter Olympics got under way, and athletes from Russia were forced to compete under the Olympic flag and be designated as “Olympic Athletes from Russia” (OAR) as punishment for systemic doping at the 2014 Games in Sochi, Russian bobsledder Nadezhda Sergeeva proudly wore a T-shirt that read “I Don’t Do Doping.” But on Feb. 23, Sergeeva became the second Russian athlete to fail a doping test. (Russian curler Alexander Krushelnitsky also failed a drug test earlier in the games.) Sergeeva was a vocal critic of the Olympic policy toward Russian athletes, telling Yahoo Sports, “If we are here, and we are clean, we should be able to walk under our flag.”

Mail Call The Federal Agency for Environmental Protection in Mexico is investigating a Feb. 7 attempt to express-mail a Bengal tiger cub from Jalisco to Queretaro, reported WDBJ-TV. The cub had been sedated and packed into a plastic container; a dog sniffing for contraband detected it. Wildlife agents said the cub was underweight and dehydrated but otherwise healthy, and its papers were in order. However, because mailing it was considered mistreatment, it was relocated to a wildlife protection center.

Mark Of A Zero Ruan Rocha da Silva, 18, was caught in late March trying to steal five cans of deodorant from a supermarket in Sao Paulo, Brazil. His prominent tattoo might have given him away: A year ago, after Silva tried to steal a bike from Maycon Wesley Carvalho, 27, and Ronildo Moreira de Araujo, 29, the two men forcibly tattooed Silva’s forehead with the words “I am a thief and an idiot.” The Daily Mail reported that Carvalho and Araujo were caught after filming themselves inking Silva’s forehead and sending the video to friends; both were sentenced to jail time. Silva is out on bail, awaiting trial for shoplifting.

Least Competent Criminals

A loss prevention officer at a Vero Beach, Fla., Walmart happened to catch 25-year-old Cheyenne Amber West and another woman as they carried out some complicated maneuvers in the electronics aisle on Nov. 6. The officer told the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office that West and her friend chose a computer, video game controllers and other items worth a total of almost $2,000, then covered the bar codes with stickers taken from less-expensive clearance items. They then moved to the self-checkout lane, where their loot totaled just $3.70. “I am just trying to get gifts for my son that I cannot afford,” West told officers. “The computer is for my husband. Since he just got me a Coach purse, I figured he deserved something nice as well.” Treasure Coast Newspapers reports that West was charged with felony grand theft and felony shoplifting and was released on $3,000 bail. The other woman was not charged.

Magically Delicious

Eastern Michigan University student Andrew (who didn’t give a last name), 22, wasn’t making any kind of statement or protesting any government action (or lack thereof) on March 12 when he filled a pothole in Trenton with a whole box of Lucky Charms and a gallon of milk.

Andrew then lay on the road with a spoon and ate the cereal out of the pothole. “I don’t know where the inspiration came from, but when it hit me, I knew it was a good idea,” Andrew told MLive.com.

“It tasted great. If I was blindfolded, I wouldn’t know if it was a pothole or a bowl.”

Bare Market

Sullivan, Mo., police department Lt. Patrick Johnson joined the town’s residents in witnessing a barrage of weird behavior on Nov. 3 and 4. Johnson thinks the people who were “barking like dogs or other farm animals, running up and down the street, entering people’s homes, breaking into a business” were high on flakka, a synthetic drug, mixed with methamphetamine, although the substances have not yet been tested. Some of the people broke into a nightclub, stripped down to their birthday suits and showered in fountain water or soda, according to the Sullivan Independent News. Two people were arrested, and others were treated at a hospital.

International Relations

Italian chef Fabio Picchi has offered three American exchange students in Florence a four-hour cooking lesson after the women tried to cook pasta in a pot without water on March 18. The pasta burst into flames within minutes, and firefighters were summoned to put out the fire.

“We thought it was cooked like that,” one of the students told La Nazione. “They will have lunch in our restaurant with two of my extraordinary cooks,” Picchi said.

“I think this can be useful to them, but also to us. Understanding is always what is beautiful and necessary.”

CNY FRIENDS OF NRA BANQUET WILL FUND GUN SAFETY PROGRAMS

When the weather’s good, Jim Middleton heads to Fulton’s Pathfinder Fish and Game Club about once a week. “I shoot at the target,” he said. “I just try to see how close I can get to the bull’s eye. I enjoy going to the range and shooting pistols and rifles.”

Middleton, a retired welder who lives in Phoenix, also hunts deer, although he does that less since a problem with his right eye required he shift to left-handed shooting. “I don’t get into shotgun shooting,” he said. “I could never hit the broad side of a barn with a shotgun.”

Middleton, a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association (NRA), is serving his ninth year on the Central New York Friends of NRA committee. The group’s 26th annual banquet is Friday, May 4, 5:30 p.m., at Barbagallo’s Restaurant, 6344 E. Molloy Road, East Syracuse.

The banquet funds gun safety and education, and programs that support shooting sports, not the politics of the NRA, Middleton said.

The CNY Friends group staffed a table at the April 18 and 19 Syracuse Gun Show at the New York State Fairgrounds. “If anyone starts talking politics, we’re supposed to say, ‘Go to another NRA person,’” Middleton said. “It’s just their policy.”

The East Syracuse event is one of dozens across the country organized by Friends of NRA, volunteer groups “fundraising for the future of the shooting sports,” according to the NRA website. Eleven New York Friends’ events, from May through September, are listed on the website. Since 1992, the NRA Foundation has awarded nearly $335 million through more than 42,000 grants, according to the NRA website.

The NRA’s language suggests that Friends’ events do stress safety and education, but their underlying purpose is political: to defend the Second Amendment, which the NRA increasingly sees under attack. “We face a well-orchestrated, coordinated, deliberate effort to demean and diminish the NRA out of existence,” Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president and NRA spokesperson, says in the May American Rifleman, the monthly magazine of the NRA.

“The core focus of Foundation grants remains strong: Teach Freedom,” says the foundation’s 2016 annual report. “Your leadership and extraordinary support of Freedom’s cause are making a huge difference in our commitment to promote this country’s treasured traditions and the Second Amendment,” LaPierre said in that report.

Money raised at Friends’ dinners goes to the NRA Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that raises and donates money to outdoors groups and organizations like 4-H, Cooperative Extension and Boy Scouts. “A 501(c)(3) organization may engage in some lobbying, but too much lobbying activity risks loss of tax-exempt status,” according to the web-

site of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

The NRA, however, is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit and enjoys tax-exempt status as a “social welfare” organization. “Seeking legislation germane to the organization’s programs is a permissible means of attaining social welfare purposes,” according to the IRS. The NRA Foundation awarded $303,335 to New York state programs in 2016, the most recent year for which public information was available. Central New York organizations receiving funding that year include the Baldwinsville Rod & Gun Club, the Longhouse Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Camillus Sportsmen’s Club, DeWitt Fish & Game Club and Fowler High School.

New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, New York’s official NRA-affiliated group, also received a 2016 NRA Foundation grant, according to the annual report. The state organization sued Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other state leaders in March 2013, two months after Cuomo signed into law the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Act. That state legislation followed the December 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, which left 20 children, six adults and the shooter dead.

Neither Jason Brown, a national spokesman for the NRA, nor Bruce McGowan, NRA field representative for the region that includes Central New York, agreed to be interviewed for this story. Neither responded to emailed questions about the foundation’s structure, finances and relationship to the NRA. “It’s not something we want to talk about at this time,” Brown said in a brief telephone conversation. “I’m taking a more skeptical approach to local stories.

They’ve been spun.”

The Central New York Friends of NRA event typically draws about 200 people, most of whom are NRA members, Middleton said. Tickets are $45; the event includes games of chance, auctions and raffles. The local group purchases many raffle and auction items from the NRA. They are “unique, custom, or limited-in-production, and in some cases, available only at Friends of NRA events.”

Items include the Gun of the Year Set: Kimber Custom II .45 ACP and Silver Stag Knife with Display Case and other firearms.

In Central New York, it’s a casual affair.

“We wear gray short-sleeved pullover shirts,” Middleton said. “If you want to see fancy clothes, you have to go up to the Orange County Friends of the NRA. The guys wear tuxes and girls wear evening gowns.”

For at least 12 years, the CNY Friends volunteers earned “high-caliber committee” status for raising more than $25,000 for the NRA foundation, according to Middleton. His wife, Gail Middleton, is the group’s treasurer; their 35-year-old son handles tickets for the event.

As of last Friday, reservations were low, Middleton said. “I’m not sure why,” he said. “Maybe people are afraid of what might happen if protesters do show up.

Maybe some people are afraid they are going to lose their guns. It could be the economy.”

He’s unaware of any state or federal officials attending this year. But he said state Sen. John DeFrancisco, who opposes the SAFE Act, would be welcome, as

would Republican Rep. John Katko. The NRA has given Katko a total of $12,900 in the last three congressional election cycles, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Asked about his views on gun laws, Middleton said, “I don’t pay much attention to politics.” After a pause, he added, “It’s not the guns that are bad. It’s the people that are bad. In my way of thinking, it doesn’t matter how many gun laws they enact, I don’t think they’ll do any good.”

Tony Dennison hasn’t missed many CNY Friends of the NRA dinners. “A bunch of us from the (Pompey) Rod and Gun Club go,” he said. “We have a hell of a good time and it’s standing up for the NRA, which is very important.”

He’s irritated at the backlash gun owners are facing after the October 2017 Las Vegas massacre (58 people dead and 851 injured) and the Feb. 14, 2018, shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. (17 dead and 17 injured).

“The gun has absolutely nothing to do with the crime,” Dennison said. “If they don’t have a gun, they’d use a hammer. If they don’t have a hammer, they’ll use a car.”

The solution, he said, is not restricting gun access, but better communication among agencies. “If the government and the law enforcement talked to each other, those people would not have had guns,” he said.

Dennison is not shy about sharing his opinion. But not everyone wants to hear it, he said. Last week he and some friends were in a local restaurant talking about hunting, fishing and President Trump.

“A man and his wife overheard our conversation and came over and told us what they thought about

it,” he said. “The lady said something and gave us the finger and her husband made some snide remark. She walked out giving us the finger all the way out. We’re still laughing about it.”

Dennison, 82, retired as foreman at Allied Chemical. He grew up in Syracuse; at about age 8 he started hunting at his grandmother’s farm in New Woodstock. He hunts deer, bear, pheasants, grouse and wild turkeys. He also enjoys trap and target shooting.

In a few months, he’s heading to Africa for his eighth hunting trip — this time to dart a rhino. “You dart them and put them to sleep,” he explained.

“They make a replica.”

If he’s successful, he will have shot Africa’s Big 5 Game: lion, elephant, leopard, Cape buffalo and rhinoceros. “The only one I didn’t kill would be the rhino,” he said. “The elephant goes to the people for the food. A five-ton elephant feeds a lot of people.”

Hunting “gets you out in the country and you see a lot of stuff,” Dennison said. “I take a lot of wildlife photos, too. I meet a lot of interesting people.”

His collection includes 60 rifles and shotguns.

“That doesn’t count my pistols,” he added. “Some people think I have too many. I like to look at them.

I shoot them all. For different animals you need different calibers.”

Dennison supports the NRA because “they do a lot to teach shooting and they kind of protect our rights,” he said. “The NRA teaches safety. They protect the fact that liberals and Democrats would love to take your guns away. That’s exactly what they want.”

NRA Foundation grants “teach the kids coming up about safety and the Second Amendment,” he said.

As for the dinner, he goes “for the camaraderie of the guys. We laugh at each other when we don’t win

THINGS THAT MATTER

UPGRADES NEEDED FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENTS’ ONLINE PRESENCE I was recently involved in a work-related project that included updating media contact information for various town and village officials across Central New York.

When I needed to find information on mayors, town board members and village trustees, I turned to Google, hoping to use local governments’ home websites as a starting point.

Since I’ve had experience in this sort of thing as a journalist, I expected to find some problems. But I didn’t expect to find such a shambles at almost every site.

Various websites for towns and villages had limited or no contact information for important elected officials. Some listed phone numbers that had been disconnected. Others had email addresses that didn’t work. More than one site had working phone numbers and email addresses, but they belonged to elected officials who were no longer in office.

One clerk told me I could find numbers and emails for each village trustee on their website. However, all trustees had the same phone number underneath their names ― which was the number I had just used to contact the clerk. They also had the same email address, which also was directed to the clerk.

Almost all of the sites had some sort of major flaw, whether it was broken links, bad navigational tools, antiquated design templates (similar to ones I used in middle school), long-outdated meeting minutes and agendas, or super-old news items and announcements. The digital age of instant

information and easy communication that has transformed the world over the last 10 years has yet to find its way to our local city and town halls.

It’s a problem that goes far beyond Central New York. According to a December 2014 online survey of 334 local governments, only 34 percent of respondents rated their respective websites as “highly effective,” according to Vision Internet, a technology firm that specializes in government website development.

In a 2014 report from New York’s Empire Center, 85 percent of the websites for the state’s 500 largest counties, municipalities and school districts failed to earn a passing grade for transparency in the center’s first annual SeeThroughNY Website Report Card. Websites for towns received a 79 percent failure rate, while village sites received a 93 percent failure rate.

A further look into individual categories found that information about officials’ contacts received a 65 percent failure rate; public meetings, 21 percent; public information, 81 percent; budgets, 37 percent; financial reports, 79 percent; contracts, 99 percent; taxes and fees, 36 percent; facilities and services, 37 percent; expenditures, 48 percent; and ease of navigation, 72 percent.

The Empire Center released a progress report in 2016 showing some improvement, but the majority of websites still leave much to be desired. Evidently, local governments are not taking advantage of

the enormous benefits that the internet can bring to communities.

Yet just as more people are turning to the internet for news, entertainment, shopping and more, they are also doing the same when it comes to civic engagement. A 2013 Pew Research Center poll found that 34 percent of American adults had recently contacted a government official or spoke out in a public forum via online methods.

Just as news, retail and Netflix have adapted their ways to fit the modern era, local governments should be doing the same. In an age where we have apps that can tell you in a pirate voice where to find your vehicle in a parking lot, we should be able to find out what goes on in our villages.

In 2016, Texas passed a law requiring large school districts, cities and counties

to create audio and video recordings of board, city council and commissioner meetings and then post them on the internet. Starting last month, the Syracuse Common Council began live-streaming their meetings, something Mayor Ben Walsh’s administration outlined as a priority earlier this year.

That kind of effort should be watched closely by other municipalities who need services upgraded. One of the greatest responsibilities of government is to provide citizens with the accessibility and information they need on issues surrounding their hometown. Informed citizens make better governments and better governments make better communities.

After all, it’s on a local level where the most people can make the most difference.

A strong online presence would make that concept more possible than ever. SNT

R / eefer GLADNESS Medical marijuana takes root at DeWitt’s Terradiol company

By Kenneth Polisse Jr. There is a holistic quality behind the medical marijuana movement currently growing across the United States. For one DeWitt company, however, holistic means more than just the treatment of body and mind.

Terradiol New York, one of 10 licensed medical marijuana facilities in the state, expands the definition of holistic to mean the healing of communities as well as patients. The bio-pharmaceutical operation takes up 90,000 square feet of the long-vacant New Venture Gear space, as the former automobile plant is now home to more than 10,000 budding marijuana plants.

Terradiol is the result of a partnership between founder and Chief Executive Officer John Vavalo and Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer Dennis DuVal. Both men are linked by the deaths of loved ones who were forced to cope with the pain of terminal illnesses.

Family Ties

Vavalo is co-owner of J. Michael Shoes, a Syracuse business started by Vavalo’s late father when John was born. Vavalo had been an engineer and entrepreneur, yet he proceeded to help his mother run the family business following his father’s death.

Six years ago, Vavalo’s mother was diagnosed with a terminal illness. She underwent chemotherapy, but her fight ended two months after the chemo. Vavalo recalled witnessing the agony

that his mother experienced during her chemo rounds, and how he wished there was a form of pain relief for her.

Following his career as a City of Syracuse police chief, DuVal entered the private sector and was involved with the food manufacturing industry. His mother was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer and had been prescribed opioids. DuVal remembered that in the later stages of her illness she developed opioid chants, where a person continuously mumbles or “chants” while awake from the constant use of the drug.

Like Vavalo, DuVal wished there was a better option. DuVal said it wasn’t about finding a cure at that point, but about relieving the pain. Upon losing their mothers, both men dedicated time to researching alternatives, and found medical marijuana.

“If this can bring relief to some people,” Vavalo said, “then why not?”

Their individual research eventually led them to the creation of Terradiol, one of the largest and most advanced medical marijuana facilities in the country. Vavalo coined the company’s name: “Terra” is a term for Earth, and “diol” is a suffix commonly attached to cannabinoids — the chemical compounds found within the cannabis flower. The business began in 2017.

“Everything I’ve done in my career has been to give back,” DuVal noted. “This is no different.”

High Security

Terradiol currently has 21 employees on staff, with more to be hired in the coming months as the technical positions begin to be filled. Vavalo said that during the peak of construction for the facility, 60 workers were on site setting up the ventilation systems and water filtration units, as well as the building of multiple offices, grow rooms, labs and packaging areas.

“We demand a certain level of excellence of ourselves and those we work with,” Vavalo said after a tour of the facility. Multiple 65-inch security monitors are connected to 187 cameras throughout the property. An airlock hallway works as an added security measure, but also as a bio-contamination filtration prior to approaching the base of the operations.

Currently, 5,000 gallons of city water are filtered to absolute “000,” which means 100 percent of dissolved solids have been removed, then mixed with the company’s own blend of ingredients that are pumped into the three flower rooms and mother room. The flower rooms are where plants begin the growth process from seed or tissue culture and progress through the growth stages before they are ready to be processed. The mother room is where the main plant specimens are located that are used to propagate new plants.

Plants are cultivated for the best possible strains. Terradiol has 109 marijuana strains ranging in sizes from four inches to three feet throughout the current flower rooms. The plants, depending on the strain, have a full cultivation span anywhere from 45 to 90 days.

Once the plants are ready for processing, they are moved into a drying room equipped with sliding racks. While on the racks, the plants’ moisture content drops to 20 percent before moving to the oven, where the remainder of the moisture evaporates before reaching the extractor.

Vavalo says Terradiol uses a high-pressure carbon dioxide extractor. The liquid CO2 washes through the plants, then is removed, leaving a honey-type substance that is ready for the next phase. The process allows for a consistency within the product that is perfect every time.

The large packaging room is essentially a mini-pharmaceutical facility where the Terradiol products — from oils to vapes and powders and more — will be ready to load into the company’s fleet of vehicles for delivery to the dispensaries.

Cannabis Coming Attractions

The DeWitt facility will eventually have 14 grow rooms, and there is capacity for potential expansion up to 300,000-plus square feet. The company is also in the process of opening a similar facility in Ohio.

And since medical marijuana is currently not covered by insurance, the company is developing a program that will allow it to subsidize the cost of products for patients who need them.

Regarding the anti-marijuana stance

taken by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, both Vavalo and DuVal felt the comments were directed toward the states that have legalized recreational use, and that New York’s compliance for medical marijuana is stricter than in other states.

DuVal added that if you do things outside those parameters the federal government will intervene, just like in any other business.

“Ultimately, the goal is to help people in need,” DuVal said. “It’s a health-andwellness thing for us.” SNT

SCHUMER LOBBIES TO DECRIMINALIZE POT Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) recently announced he’d be rolling out legislation to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level. Along with the reclassification of the drug, Schumer noted several other provisions to the bill aimed at strengthening the economy and furthering research on the currently illegal plant.

The announcement came during the week of April 20, a day known in pop culture as “weed day.” The bill would remove marijuana from the list of substances named in the Controlled Substances Act. The Drug Enforcement Administration currently considers marijuana-cannabis a Schedule I drug,

meaning there is “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.” Other Schedule I drugs are heroin, LSD, ecstasy and peyote, according to the DEA. Meanwhile, drugs like cocaine, methamphetamine, oxycodone/OxyContin and fentanyl are considered slightly less likely to be abused and are Schedule II drugs. Ketamine is Schedule III and Xanax is Schedule IV. Marijuana has been used for medicinal purposes in New York since 2014, with about 52,000 patients currently registered for medical marijuana use, according to state Department of Health statistics. Twenty-eight other states and the District of

Columbia have also legalized medical marijuana.

Schumer likened these states to “laboratories,” and noted that there were no noticeable adverse effects in either states with medicinal marijuana or legalized recreational marijuana. There was no change in crime rates, either. And although marijuana was once considered a “gateway drug,” there was no measurable increase in child drug abuse cases, he said.

“The legislation is long overdue,” Schumer said in an interview with Vice News. “I’ve seen too many people’s lives ruined because they had small amounts of marijuana and served time in jail much too long.”

“If smoking marijuana doesn’t hurt anybody else, why shouldn’t we allow people to do it and not make it criminal?” he told Vice. “We allow the states to decide, so each state can decide on their own, but there’ll be no federal agents or anything like that.”

The other focuses of the bill surround potential public health concerns: Research: Schumer stated the legislation would call for further research investments to continue understanding how THC, the main drug found in marijuana and cannabis, affects the brain and the drug’s efficiency in treating different medical ailments.

Advertising: The federal government would still control and regulate advertising related to marijuana, similarly to how it oversees tobacco and alcohol ads, to ensure they’re not targeting children.

Schumer said as of now his bill will not touch on criminal justice reform, but he said other policymakers, such as Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), are moving in that direction. Booker introduced the Marijuana Justice Act to the Senate in August 2017, which also called for the decriminalization of marijuana at the federal level and stated people convicted of marijuana-related crimes should have their sentences reviewed by a judge.

Federal-level convictions were to be expunged. Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Cal.) introduced the same bill to the House of Representatives in February.

Schumer’s legislation has yet to be introduced to the Senate, but the New York senator said it should be finalized in the coming months.

MORE TRICKS THAN TREATS IN THE MAGIC PLAY

A

ctor Brett Schneider likes to quote the 19th-century maestro Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin as saying, “A magician is an actor playing a magician.” Sorry, kids, this means that what we call “magic” is created out of talent, discipline and hard work, especially rehearsal. Robert-Houdin (whose name inspired Erich Weiss to change his to Houdini in tribute) is also saying that a magician is not a shaman or priest. Instead, like any actor, such as Robert De Niro in Raging Bull or Meryl Streep in Sophie’s Choice, the performer employs some elements of self.

Schneider is the 32-year-old lead in Andrew Hinderaker’s The Magic Show, Syracuse Stage’s season finale running through May 13. Hinderaker tailored the role of the Magician (no other name) in The Magic Play for Schneider and his breath-stopping tricks in a handful of productions around the country, most notably at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre in October 2016. Although there is no suggestion that the role is biographical, no one else has ever played it.

Most of the Goodman team, including director Halena Kays, has traveled to Syracuse for this opening. Kays favors pregnant pauses, suggesting a sustained experience with the works of Harold Pinter.

Imported also is the production team of scenic designer Lizzie Bracken, lighting designer Jesse Belsky, media designer Philip Allgeier and magic consultant Jim Steinmeyer. They ensure that there is a comparable magic in the presentation.

When the Magician performs the famous Biddle Card Trick, we see the cards brightly projected on a screen above.

Because a translucent scrim has been interposed, the screen appears to be floating in air, like, um, legerdemain. Soon other images also appear on the screen, such as the towering Diver (Sean Parris) with Olympic-toned muscles, preening on a high board.

Even though the first 25 minutes include interaction with a person plucked from the audience, all is perfection, with one gasp-worthy moment following after another. The rest of the production, alas, does not live up to this gleaming promise.

Because of the required participation, not every audience is going to see an identical show. The program asserts, “No actors or stooges are used as volunteers.”

Instead of calling for hands, the Magician goes up the aisle and points to the person

he wants. (The night the Syracuse New Times attended, one of the pluckees was a personal friend, so we can testify, “No collusion.”) Generally the overweening confidence of the Magician can control anyone pulled up onto the stage and likely to be trembling. The unknown is always a risk, however.

What we have not expected is the dialogue between the Magician and the Diver, with heated attacks on one another, laced with F-bombs. They have been lovers, and things are breaking apart. To a degree, Schneider’s quoting of Robert-Houdin has anticipated this because the Magician is a polished performer with a messy offstage life. The conflict is also an upending of the Magician’s controlling personality, on top of every trick and manipulating the volunteers like marionettes. Instead, we now see the Magician as dogged by insecurity and fear.

What makes this underwhelming dramatically is that the squabble and breakup appear untethered to what had gone on in the splendid first 25 minutes. Whose side are we on? The breakup is no more involving than one you stumbled upon in the wrong aisle of a supermarket when you were really only looking for Progresso soup.

The second act brings a change of scenery, far downmarket from what we saw in Act I. In a tawdry Reno bar, an older, portly man named, inventively, Another Magician (Jack Bronis), is plying his trade. He uses oversize cards in what looks like a variation of three-card monte.

No one has to explain to us how second-rate this is because the goal of three-card monte is to cheat the rubes.

The Magician has had higher aspirations, however. A program note supplies a useful quote from Teller of Penn & Teller, who ranks performed magic ahead of the romantic novel, horror movie, or sympho-

ny: “Magic goes straight to the brain; its essence is intellectual.” There is no indication that playwright Hinderaker knew of this line but he can embrace it now.

Like other practitioners, Another Magician calls for volunteers from the audience, and up pops the Magician from the first act. In short order we learn things about both men, which generates little tension. We also learn that the Magician suffered a psychological wound in childhood, de rigueur for uncountable numbers of artists.

The Magic Play ends with more extended audience participation. This time the

volunteer not only comes on stage but stays there for a conversation. He or she is invited to propose a magic trick for the Magician to perform.

Here’s the most dangerous risk of the show. Projected phrases on the scrim suggest some of the pious but predictable options, such as “Find a cure for cancer” and “Build world peace.” But neither we nor the Magician knows what’s coming.

Brett Schneider has wowed us with what he can do after rehearsal. Now he must improvise on the spot. How well he can do this will color how audiences view the entire play. SNT

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Isaac Newton

(1643-1727) was among history’s three most influential scientists. Immanuel Kant (17241804) has been described as the central figure in modern philosophy. Henry James (1843-1916) is regarded as one of the greatest novelists in English literature. John Ruskin (1819-1900) was a prominent art critic and social thinker. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) “Every so often, a

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Mayflies are

aquatic insects with short life spans. Many species live less than 24 hours, even though the eggs they lay may take three years to hatch. I suspect this may be somewhat of an apt metaphor for your future, Scorpio. A transitory or short-duration experience could leave a legacy that will ripen for a long time before it hatches.

But that’s where the metaphor breaks down.

When your legacy has fully ripened — when it becomes available as a living presence — I bet it will last a long time.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) When a critic at Rolling Stone magazine reviewed The Beatles’ Abbey Road in 1969, he said some of the songs were “so heavily overproduced that they are hard to listen to.” He added, “Surely they must have enough talent and intelligence to do better than this.” Years later, however, Rolling Stone altered its opinion, naming Abbey Road the 14th best album of all time.

I suspect, Sagittarius, that you’re in a phase with metaphorical resemblances to the earlier assessment. But I’m reasonably sure that this will ultimately evolve into being more like the later valuation — and it won’t take years.
