CLIMATE KEEPERS As Earth Day approaches, local businesses think global with savvy solutions

hen Dan Kingsley made plans to build a new facility for his physical therapy practice in Chittenango, he considered all of his options. “We could have done anything,” he said. “It was a dream of mine to go green. I wanted to be part of the solution, not the cause of global warming.”

The result of his efforts — with advice from his engineer father and brother — is a 6,000-square-foot, net-zero building that is heated and cooled with 10 tons of vertical closed loop geothermal. All of the energy for the 2014 Chittenango Physical Therapy building on Route 5 comes from 35 kilowatts of solar photovoltaics on adjustable poles behind the building.

Kingsley decided not to connect to the natural gas line in front of his new building. The building is outfitted with LED lights.

Kingsley went green out of concern that climate change will destroy the world his 10- and 12-year-old daughters will live in.

He also wants to see the United States less dependent on oil from the Middle East.

Key to Kingsley’s decision to use renewable energy was its financial benefits. The power bill on his old building — half the size, but clearly not energy-efficient — was about $1,000 a month. Now it’s $22.

“I plan on being in business for another 30 years,” he said. “The return on investment for solar is about six

years, and it’s about 10 years for the geothermal.”

Kingsley’s building is among more than 20 sites on a self-guided tour organized to coincide with Earth Day. On display Saturday, April 23, will be geothermal, solar and wind energy fueling local homes, farms, commercial buildings, schools and municipal settings.

“We want people to see that these 21stcentury sources of energy work,” said Peter Wirth, a volunteer with Central New York volunteers Climate Change Awareness & Action (CCAA). The group last fall presented the 2009 documentary A Sea Change to a packed house at the Palace Theatre.

Tour sites include private homes, including those of activist Aggie Lane and environmentalist and Native American advocate Joe Heath; public and private school buildings; and commercial and municipal properties. Some are new builds, and others are retro-fitted with the new technology.

Earth Day, celebrated on April 22, was born in 1970. The worldwide event is

King & King Architects, 358 W. Jefferson St. This refurbished warehouse on Syracuse’s near West Side was the first LEED-Platinum certified building in Central New York. Sustainable features include air quality, day lighting, roofing, heat reduction, ventilation, flooring, restrooms, parking areas and equipment. The building also has 65 185-watt solar panels on the roof.

Lyncourt Veterinary Hospital, 2306 Court St. Owner Bill Stokes-Cawley installed 85 solar panels on the building’s roof in December 2014. By spring 2015, the energy charge on his electricity bill was zero.

Manlius Pebble Hill School, 5300 Jamesville Road The school installed a 117-panel, 25 kilowatt solar array in 2011. Since then, it has avoided 142,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. The school added a geothermal heating and cooling system for its new library in 2014.

Pike Block Building, 300 S. Salina St. The 30,000-square-foot commercial building uses geothermal heating and cooling that taps into the brine aquifer that runs 85 feet below Salina Street.

248 Bryant Ave. This 1,800-square-foot home, owned by Kyle Thomas, is in densely populated downtown Syracuse and boasts a 6.44 kilowatt solar photovoltaics system.

The building is in mid-installation of a geothermal heating and cooling system.

now celebrated in more than 193 countries. The first Earth Day put environmental concerns on the national agenda. In December 1970, Congress authorized the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

On Earth Day 2016, the United States, China, and 120 other countries will sign the Paris Agreement, a global agreement to combat climate change. The United States and China are the world’s two biggest polluters, accounting for 40 percent of global emissions.

The deal is the next step in the historic draft climate protection treaty adopted at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris. It requires formal approval by at least 55 nations representing 55 percent of man-made greenhouse gas emissions.

There’s some urgency to reaching that 55 percent threshold this year. Once that happens, any country that has signed cannot withdraw from the agreement for four years. Should Republican candidates Donald Trump or Ted Cruz, who remain unconvinced that climate change is man-made, win the U.S. presidency, they will be unable to backtrack on the U.S. commitment to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.

Wirth, a longtime Syracuse activist, is armed with dreary statistics about the effects of greenhouse gas emissions.

February 2016 was the most abnormally warm month on record, he said. February broke the record for the previous abnormally warm month on record. That was January 2016.

Coastal flooding is also rising at the greatest pace in 28 centuries. For example, it’s increased more than tenfold in Annapolis, Md. The fire season in the U.S. Northwest is 78 days longer than it was in the 1970s.

And don’t get Wirth started on the damage caused by ocean acidification — the subject of the award-wining documentary A Sea Change.

He’s seen the effects of climate change with his own eyes.

He and his family visited Glacier National Park in Montana’s Rocky Mountains a few years ago, “In 20 years it will be glacier-less,” he said.

Just weeks ago, Wirth visited the Grand Canyon. A guide told him decreasing snowfall on the Northern Rim soon will affect the area’s water supply.

Closer to home, warmer weather is pushing ticks farther north. That means a greater threat of Lyme disease, a bacterial infection caused by a bite from an infected deer tick. The disease is concentrated heavily in the Northeast and upper Midwest, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Five cases of Lyme disease were reported in Onondaga County in 2001. Forty cases were reported in 2014, the most recent year for which statistics are available.

Kingsley took advantage of a solar tax credit when constructing his Chittenango building. From April to November, the building generates more energy than it uses, and Kingsley gets energy credits he can apply to winter bills.

About 150 people visit his office each week. A screen in the waiting room shows how much energy his system generates, how much energy the building is using and how much the energy costs.

CHIEFS START SWINGING HOME THIS WEEK Eventually, the Syracuse Chiefs will start playing just about every day. And when they do, here are nine things you’ll want to know about the local nine for the 2016 season: What happened to Opening Day? The Chiefs were scheduled to open this season April 7 and play their first four games at home. However, the early April snow prevented the grass field at NBT Bank Stadium from being ready, so in an unprecedented move the Chiefs postponed the first four games of the season.

“The last thing we want to do is put our fans and our players in danger,” Chiefs general manager Jason Smorol said when the Chiefs announced the postponements. “Because of the heavy snow this past week, and with rain, snow and freezing temperatures in the forecast, we’ve determined that the weather has made playing unsuitable.

The Chiefs did make up two of the games by playing the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in a “home” doubleheader before no fans April 8 at Lehigh Valley. The Chiefs won both games. The other two games will be made up as parts of doubleheaders on Wednesday, April 20, and Aug. 19 in Syracuse, and the Chiefs’ re-Opening Day was scheduled for this past Tuesday against Buffalo at NBT Bank Stadium.

What about Don Waful Day? The Chiefs planned to honor the former president of the team’s board of directors April 8 on his 100th birthday. But since that game was postponed, the Chiefs will salute Waful, the oldest living Syracuse University alumnus and winner of the 2016 “Spirit of the International League” award, at a later date to be announced soon.

Who are the top prospects? The Triple-A Chiefs’

Opening Day roster included four of the Washington Nationals’ top 10 prospects as ranked by Baseball America magazine: shortstop Trea Turner (No. 2), pitchers A.J. Cole (No. 7) and Austin Voth (No. 9), and catcher Pedro Severino (No. 10). Turner, who batted .314 in 48 games with the Chiefs last season, is also ranked by Baseball America as the No. 9 prospect in the entire minor leagues.

The Nationals’ No. 1 prospect, pitcher Lucas Giolito, started this season at Double-A Harrisburg and should get promoted to Syracuse at some point this season, if he stays healthy.

Who are the familiar faces? The Chiefs’ Opening Day roster included 19 players who have previously played for Syracuse, 17 players who have played in the major leagues, and 11 who have played in the majors with the Nationals. Among the notable returnees are catcher Jhonatan Solano, who has played all or parts of six seasons with the Chiefs and returns to Syracuse after one year in the Miami Marlins’ organization; third baseman Jason Martinson, who led the Chiefs with 19 home runs last season and represented Syracuse in the Triple-A All-Star game; outfielder Brian Goodwin, who played in 81 games for the Chiefs in 2014; and closer Rafael Martin, who had 12 saves in 46 games for the Chiefs in 2015.

Outfielder Matt den Dekker, who played in 73 games for Syracuse last season, was on the Chiefs’ Opening Day roster but was promoted to Washington before the Chiefs’ first game.

Who’s on the coaching staff? Manager Billy Gardner Jr., who guided the Chiefs to the International League North Division title in 2014, returns for his third season in Syracuse. Pitching coach Bob Milacki

is back for his second season, and the new hitting coach is Brian Daubach, who managed Double-A Harrisburg last year and spent eight of his five major-league seasons with the Boston Red Sox. What about $1 Thursdays and Fireworks Fridays? They’re back! On $1 Thursdays fans can purchase hot dogs and Coca-Cola products for $1, and Coors, Labatt’s, Saranac and 1911 alcoholic products for $2. Fireworks Fridays feature an explosive skyward display after every Friday game.

Because the opener was scheduled for a Thursday, the Chiefs are turning the 1:05 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, game into “Mulligan Day” with the usual $1 Thursday specials. And if the temperature does not reach 53 degrees Wednesday, all fans in attendance can exchange their tickets for free ducats to an April or May game.

What are some of the other promotions? From Bark in the Park (April 30 and Aug. 24) to the Trea Turner Garden Gnome giveaway (June 19) to Star Wars Night (Aug. 20), the Chiefs have a promotion — or two, or even three — every game. TIM BOND’S FOND FAREWELL

F

or the first 10 minutes of Lucas Hnath’s prize-winning drama The Christians, the Syracuse Stage audience is attending a church service. Or what feels like one.

A 32-member choir led by Michael G. Keck warms up the congregation with almost-familiar hand-clapping hymns whose words appear on panels at left and right. We could join in. The rhythm is contagious, even if Keck just wrote the music himself.

What the playwright is telling us, emphasized by Tim Bond’s heartfelt direction, is that a house of worship is also a theater. Nearly all dialogue, even when intimate and personal, is spoken into microphones.

Words are expected to resonate around the room.

The church we see, with polished wood panels created by scenic designer Matt Saunders, would never be confused with the cathedral at Chartres. Instead, it resembles the mega-churches of clergymen like Joel Osteen, of Lakewood Church in Houston, the largest Protestant congregation in the United States. Osteen, known as the “smiling preacher,” has been known to go easy on the hellfire and damnation and has recently emphasized the gospel of prosperity.

Pious playgoers have reason to be wary of Hnath’s intentions, given the roasting of the Latter-day Saints in The Book of Mormon. Further, there is reason to complain that a drama with the expansive title of The Christians deals with contemporary Evangelicals, labeled “heretics” by secular critic Harold Bloom, rather than older denominations.

Hnath (pronounced “Nayth”) is neither a skeptic nor a proselytizer. His drama is focused on the unique profession of all Christians, of whom Evangelicals are but one instance. Besides, Evangelicals have enjoyed the greatest growth nationally in recent decades. Their interpretations are on the rise.

Growth, as it happens, is the introductory theme of

the sermon by Pastor Paul (Paul DeBoy). The church he has founded began 20 years earlier in a shabby storefront, but after exponential numbers joining the flock and a monumental building program, he has reached a conclusion. With all the debt now paid off, it’s a time for rejoicing, and a time for Pastor Paul to share reminiscences and insights.

Pastor Paul speaks with mellifluous assurance. He makes for easy listening, with none of the exhortations of famous American Protestant preachers, like Jonathan Edwards’ “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” or anything by Henry Ward Beecher or Billy Sunday. Instead, he tells of how he met his wife, the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. This leads to the lesson of the day: his description of the heroic self-sacrifice of a boy in an impoverished Third World country. He was Christ-like without having accepted Jesus.

Hnath’s anecdote might be fiction, but it runs parallel to a theological question raised in contemporary seminaries: What to make of virtuous, Christ-like figures, such as Mohandas Gandhi, who were not Christians themselves?

The fullness of Pastor Paul’s analysis of this dilemma and his subsequent recommendations cannot be revealed. He clearly wants the church to remain a loving community given to ethical behavior and good works.

Additionally, his reading of important scriptural concepts reflects the gimlet-eyed interpretation of ancient texts that has arisen in recent decades. He feels he knows what he is talking about and is not a doubter of divinity. With his tone of sweet reasonableness and

his high esteem in the congregation, he can look forward to a polite response.

Not for long, however. The associate pastor Joshua (DeLance Minefee) begins with a polite and low-keyed reaction to the sermon. Under Bond’s direction and with Minefee’s skill, we quickly deduce a subtext Pastor Paul has ignored: The younger man has long been chafing under the older man’s leadership.

Thus far the conflict looks personal as another church elder, Jay (Ames Adamson), a conciliatory figure, searches for a middle ground. All these figures speak into hand microphones, signaling that they are public figures.

Then we hear the first candid voice, one without a microphone or any hint of oratory or measured rhetoric. This is a previously unseen congregant named Jenny (Julie Jesneck). She is shaken to the core that Pastor Paul’s seemingly enlightened and even progressive dismissal of some of the church’s more rebarbative beliefs will rob her of the uniqueness of Christianity and the faith that she clings to in warding off despair. Like the suffering citizens who confront scripted politicians at town hall meetings, she is not to be turned away.

Jenny awakens a second woman who has remained silent until this point. Pastor Paul’s decorous wife, Elizabeth (Erika LeVonn), has been on the dais for more than half the play, signaling through her body language that she has been involved with everything that has been said. Casting a striking beauty as Elizabeth is no mere vanity. She pulls our eyes toward her reactions even when she is not speaking. By this time the 32-member choir has also stormed out, and Pastor Paul’s vision of a debt-free congregation is in ruin.

Secular audiences, heirs of Voltaire and Diderot, may be slow to embrace the conflict in The Christians. Yet we continue to study religions we do not practice, and read Dostoevsky, because there we can confront the questions raised here: How do we know what we believe and why do we believe it?

This is Syracuse Stage producing artistic director Tim Bond’s farewell production, one of his smoothest ever. Black faces are often found in mega-churches, comfortably integrated. Michael G. “A

nything that can be made funny must have at its heart some tragic implications.” No, that’s not Neil Simon but rather Karl Menninger, the celebrated psychiatrist. Mel Brooks, Neil Simon’s colleague in youth, put it another way: “Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into a sewer and die.”

And that’s why Neil Simon wrote The Sunshine Boys, a play filled with loneliness, fear and bitter resentment. It is such sour raw material that laughter is made of. A welcome revival is now on the floorboards through April 23 at Central New York Playhouse’s Shoppingtown venue.

The Sunshine Boys, which opened in 1972, remains one of Simon’s best-regarded and most widely translated works. In part that’s because it has two juicy roles, one of which earned an Academy Award for George Burns after a 36-year screen absence for the 1975 movie version.

Veteran local players Bill Coughlin and Ed Mastin have reportedly been thinking about taking on these roles for quite some time, a contention supported by the thoughtfulness and precision of their presentations. Aging also brings them closer to their characters.

When Sunshine Boys was written, the heady days of vaudeville sketch comedy were still within living memory, so it seemed entirely plausible that network television might want to record a landmark act from four or five decades previous. The putative models for Simon’s comedians, Smith and Dale, did indeed appear on The Ed Sullivan Show, itself a showcase for vintage vaudeville. They were lifelong pals, how-

ever, who always supported one another.

So Simon had to invent the irascible team of Lewis and Clark, who have not seen each other in 11 years.

They are to be reunited so that cultural history can be recorded and preserved.

Simon’s intention, well-served by director Korrie Taylor, is to make dyspeptic Willie Clark (Bill Coughlin) disagreeable. Alone and forgotten in his shabby, untidy apartment, Willie is the embodiment of incivility. We see him first through the eyes of his patient-to-a-fault and supportive nephew Ben Silverman (Michal Lepore).

Along with abusing Ben, who attempts to get him into commercials for which he is unsuited, Willie insults Ben’s father and conspicuously misremembers the names of his children. Willie pleads in his defense, “I’ve got a great face for an upset stomach commercial.”

Coughlin brings many assets to his portrayal of Willie, including his arthritic body set and his prematurely bald pate, but nothing beats his commanding speaking voice. There’s a bracing hardness to it, like the crack of two teak planks against one another. Although the Syracuse New Times Syracuse Area Live Theater (SALT) winner is so versatile he once played a mumbling Mafia thug, Coughlin has been ideal for

authoritarian, repressive fathers and hardass military officers. Adapting effortlessly to Willie’s Borscht Belt rhythms and intonations, Coughlin’s jibes cut deep with a dash of brine.

As Willie dominates the first act, we’re ready for the change of pace brought by Ed Mastin’s Al Lewis. This is the role for which George Burns won his Oscar, all slow takes and delayed reactions. According to the script, Al has retired to exurban comfort with his daughter in New Jersey, presumably softening his urban edge.

Mastin, who has whitened his naturally black eyebrows with powder, creeps in like a senile teddy bear, anything but the ogre Willie has been telling us about.

Coughlin and Mastin put themselves to the test when their Willie and Al, each in ludicrous toupees, recreate their classic “Doctor is In” skit, a farrago of heavy-handed wordplay and burlesque.

Lusty but game Jennie Russo is spot-on as the panties-exposing Naughty Nurse in the routine. Their skit-within-the-play is crackling good fun until Simon’s plot closes it down.

Applause also for Aileen Kennison-Adams, the compassionate nurse who pulls Willie through, Justin Polly as the barking TV techie, and Phil Brady as the hapless patient in the vaudeville sketch.

The Sunshine Boys is Neil Simon’s most philosophical comedy, but it still delivers in gags. SNT

STONE’S FARM FRESH: FILLING EMPTY TUMMIES IN A NEARLY EMPTY MALL

A

s a rule, malls aren’t places where you expect to find fresh fare. There’s popcorn, pizza, ice cream, oversized cookies, cinnamon buns and all manner of fast food. If you see a salad, it might be a mirage.

An exception is Stone’s Farm Fresh, which opened last month at Shoppingtown Mall, 3649 Erie Blvd.

E., DeWitt. The café — a quick-serve counter where you can see your food being prepared — was launched by entrepreneur April Stone to spotlight the all-natural, black Angus beef she raises at her Green Acres Beef farm in Marathon.

Taking the lead in the kitchen is chef and caterer Steve Landon, of Skaneateles, whose passion is seasonal, local and healthy food. Landon’s list of restaurant credits includes stints at Mirbeau Inn & Spa, Vernak Farms and Asti, in Syracuse, among others.

who don’t eat it. There are several soups each day, including Green Acres beef barley soup and broccoli cheddar soup, as well as a hearty beef-centric chili with no beans.

There’s a Caesar salad with house-made dressing, a roasted beet salad with apples, goat cheese, bacon (optional) and horseradish vinaigrette and a chopped salad to which you can add protein, if you like.

Landon says his garden vegetable wrap with hummus is selling well, along with the slow-roasted beef and barbecue beef sandwiches.

The star of the menu is gourmet burgers, which range from basic to dressed up, like the BLT burger (beef, lettuce and tomato), Breakfast Burger (topped with bacon, egg, cheese and spicy aioli) and the Blue

Blitz (with bacon, blue cheese and caramelized onions). Burgers are available in two sizes, five ounces and eight ounces, and served on brioche rolls with a choice of house-made fries or chips.

Three-course meals, with your choice of meat, potatoes and vegetables, are offered each day for $13.75. Phone orders are welcome, everything is available to go and there is ample seating in the food court.

“I think we add a little uniqueness to the mall,’’ Landon says, pointing out that Creole Soul, a downtown restaurant, is opening an eatery next door.

“We’ve had a great response from people so far,’’ Stone says.

It’s no secret that Shoppingtown is a ghost of its former thriving self, losing large anchor stores like J.C. Penney and Macy’s, as well as smaller, locally owned businesses. There are more than a few empty storefronts.

Still, the mall draws library visitors and moviegoers, as well as shoppers and families who frequent the play area near the food court, Landon says. And there are office buildings and office parks nearby to bring in lunch business and after-work takeouts, for those who want to get a bite to go. For those who walk the mall in the morning, Stone’s Farm Fresh has coffee, homemade muffins and other baked goods.

Stone’s Farm Fresh aims to increase its visibility in the community by participating in events like the recent Savor Syracuse fundraiser for the Food Bank of Central New York, and Central New York’s favorite food festival, Taste of Syracuse, coming up in June. CIRCA DU SO LONG If you’ve been craving a Circa burger, or braised short ribs or a local cheese plate or a spring salad or anything seasonal and local prepared by chef Alicyn Hart, you’re going to have to wait longer.

Hart was scheduled to open a new version of Circa New American Bistro, her much-loved Cazenovia restaurant, a few miles down the road, in Nelson, this spring. Work has been progressing at Nelson Corners, a cluster of mostly commercial buildings being redeveloped and renovated by Nelson resident Nancy Demyttenaere.

The retail district, at the corner of Route 20 and Erieville Road, is currently home to Peaks Coffee Co. and Humble Harvest Brewing, a nanobrewery scheduled to open this spring. Nelson Farms, the Nelson Odeon, Route 20 Sofa Company and a new greenhouse and florist, Spruce Ridge Landscape and Design, are close by.

Hart was looking forward to opening a reimagined Circa in a community with a lot of “positive energy and moving parts.” The restaurant space was starting to take shape: Demyttenaere gutted it to the bones, Hart said, and added new windows, flooring, insulation, electrical, plumbing and more.

But when disagreement arose over details of the lease agreement, Hart said she made the decision to step out. Hart added that she and the Nelson Corners developer have “different visions,’’ and that when conflicts developed, their business relationship unraveled quickly.

“In the end, I suppose, we just had different ideas,’’ Hart said. “It just didn’t feel right in the end.”

After this story was published on Syracuse NewTimes.com, Demyttenaere said, “It’s very disappointing not only for myself, but for everyone who was looking forward to having Circa here.”

However, she added, “several other entities” are

interested in the space. “We continue forward. We remain committed to the (Nelson Corners) project.”

Hart opened Circa in 2006 at 75 Albany St. (Route 20) in Cazenovia and established a reputation as a trailblazer in the local food movement, sourcing much of the restaurant’s meat, produce, dairy and other ingredients from Madison County farms and producers.

When she suspended restaurant operations in June 2014, she cited a series of rent increases, with no improvements to the space and building, as the reason for her decision. She hoped, at one time, to move the restaurant to another location in the village, but scuttled that plan after encountering opposition from

SHOCK AROUND THE CLOCK The 11th annual Salt City Horror Fest promises a grisly grab bag for gorehounds, with filmmakers and performers delivering behind-the-scenes dish, memorabilia from movie vendors and eight freaky flicks presented in vintage 35mm prints. (Yes, the movies that still have reel-change marks every 15 minutes.)

The daylong blowout, again programmed by Jeffrey Meyer, takes place Saturday, April 16, from noon until around 3 a.m. at Eastwood’s Palace Theatre, 2384 James St.

Along with poster giveaways, autograph sessions and raffles, this year’s festival will also feature its own IPA beer, created by local brewer Michael Mintier with a design by local artist C.M. Bucko. Only 100 limited-edition bottles will be available, although Mintier has also created root and birch beers for designated drivers.

The action literally commences at high noon with The Warriors (R; 90 minutes), director Walter Hill’s kinetic comic-book urban thriller about Manhattan street gangs in rumble mode during the pre-Giuliani era. Actor David Harris, who portrays the character Cochise, will introduce the iconic 1979 B-movie, which features plenty of bone-crunching mayhem presented with Hill’s dynamic flair.

Next comes a double bill featuring actor John Amplas: Midnight (R; 91 minutes), director John Russo’s 1982 shocker about warped weirdness in the woods, and Martin (R; 95 minutes), writer-director George Romero’s strange 1977 tale of a creepy young man (Amplas) with vampiric tendencies. Amplas and Russo will handle question-answer sessions following their movies.

Capping the afternoon session is The Burbs (PG; 101 minutes), director Joe Dante’s frantic 1989 satire on suburbia involving Tom Hanks as a resident who gets paranoid about his wacky neighbors. Horror Fest’s 35mm print actually comes from the Joe Dante and Jon Davison Collection at the Academy Film Archive in Hollywood.

Following a dinner break, the evening screenings start with The Shining (R; 144 minutes). Director Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 adaptation of horror novelist Stephen King’s page-turner concerns murder and madness

at an isolated hotel in the wintry Rocky Mountains. King had mixed feelings about the final product. While the often crazed turns by Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall may prove exhausting for some viewers, Kubrick’s controlled chilliness is evident in every frame of this unique thriller. Local comedian Alex Bidwell will introduce The Shining, which should provide him with plenty of funny fodder.

Next up is one of Kubrick’s favorite movies: Rosemary’s Baby (R; 136 minutes), director Roman Polanski’s acclaimed 1968 adaptation of author Ira Levin’s bestseller from the previous year. Everything goes right in this scare package involving Satanism in the Big Apple, with waifish Mia Farrow as the movie’s emotional center (during filming she was served divorce papers by then-hubby Frank Sinatra) and top performances from a supporting cast that includes Oscar-winner Ruth Gordon, John Cassavetes and Maurice Evans. (Look fast for producer William Castle’s amusing cameo at a phone booth.) Jed Levin, Ira’s son, will go down memory lane as he introduces the movie.

The night starts winding down with Event Horizon (R; 95 minutes), director Paul W.S. Anderson’s lavish 1997 sci-fi epic about the horrific stuff that astronauts encounter during a rescue mission for a missing spacecraft. Anderson has style to burn in this underrated widescreen adventure. And 1990’s Nightbreed (R; 102 minutes), a perversely entertaining monster movie from writer-director Clive Barker, has a fervent cult following that will likely stay up all night just to see it on the big screen. pring Street Family Band. The Divider (independent). This outfit takes no prisoners with their sophomore effort, which follows their debut album Blissfully Damned. Taking notes from the likes of Rage Against the Machine and Red Hot Chili Peppers, Spring Street mixes heavy rock with slick vocal spit and guitar riffs gluing it all together. The CD explodes with the band’s notorious grit and lead singer Ryan Vendetti’s powerful vocals. And the energy doesn’t wane throughout this gripping album.

The production varies given the different studios where the album was recorded: Moletrax East, MoreSound and SubCat. The tracks each carry their own personality, allowing listeners to wonder where each was born. Although this effect could seem jarring, it comes across as more endearing, as do the vocal switches between Vendetti and lead guitarist Ben Blujus.

While Vendetti seems more natural in the role, Blujus brings a raw energy to his vocal leads on “She’s Got Fire” and “I Just Wanna F*** You” that make them stand out amid the absolutely transparent lyrics. “Fire” carries elements that are reminiscent of “Lump” by the Presidents of the United States of America. And “I Just Wanna” might be the most straightforward sex song ever written, yet the track’s dirty purity makes it work perfectly.

While Vendetti takes a more Jim Morrison-like approach with lyrics that leave you guessing, the blend makes for a band (also featuring Dennis Lingel on bass, Dan McCollum on rhythm guitar and Mike Redmond on drums) that could appear simple yet instead adds layers to create something intriguing,

which is only furthered during their rowdy live shows. Other standouts like “Nuisance,” “Sexual Professional” and the group’s cover of “House of the Rising Sun” make this local album a top pick.

The Divider was submitted to the 2016 Syracuse Area Music Awards for Sammys contention, yet it was not up for a nomination — despite the fact that Spring Street won the coveted Brian Bourke Award for Best New Artist at the 2015 Sammys. The band’s absence from this year’s nominations speaks to a failure on the part of the Sammys to recognize new and exceptional talent. For more information, visit springstreetfamband.com.

Boots N Shorts. Just Another Day (independent).

With clever songs, some of the best bluegrass instrumentalists around and an overall perfect capture of the genre, Just Another Day is a necessary addition to any music lover’s collection.

The band’s quality comes from its stacked talent: Mike Mawhinney on mandolin, banjo and vocals; Kevin Morel on guitar, vocals and police radio (you have to listen to it); Jim Dunham on drums, percussion and backup vocals; Brendan Gosson on fiddle

and backup vocals; and Blake Probst on doghouse bass (a slang term for upright).

Gosson’s fiddle often steals this show, which could throw listeners back to the era of the great Hal Casey. Gosson grabs that style, wrangles it and then pushes the boundaries, adding exponentially to every track.

“Honey Do” by Mawhinney is a perfect album opener, with immediate boot-stomp appeal and charming lyrics: “If they ever legalize the weekend/ Still more days, I’m givin’ it to you/ My honey do.” Morel’s “Back Home” is an easy favorite that takes advantage of an anthemic finale.

And “Gettin’ Off the Farm” strikes with pointed lyrics: “Well, country’s music’s gone to shit/ For those who still remember it/ No one seems to know the reason why.”

Although not everyone is in love with bluegrass, this is the type of disc that anyone could find entertaining. The skill of the Boots N Shorts players lifts it above generic, making it a fun listen for anyone with appreciative ears. Like Spring Street, however, this top local CD was submitted to the Syracuse Area Music Awards, but not nominated. BAKED POTATOES’ RIDDIM METHOD

n April 20, 2012, during a SUNY Oneonta lacrosse team practice, Patrick Tierney came down with an acute case of FOMO (fear of missing out).

The longtime guitarist could hear live music coming from an outdoor concert on the quad while he watched from the field.

“That was the day I decided that I had to quit the lacrosse team, because I just didn’t have time to do anything else,” said Tierney.

The concert he missed was a festival presented

by Oneonta State NORML, a student chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. The following year, Tierney made up for what he’d missed by forming a reggae band to perform at the 2013 festival. They call themselves Baked Potatoes, and on Wednesday, April 20, they’ll perform at the Westcott Theater in conjunction with the release of Loaded, their first full-length album.

“It’s kind of hard to be confined to one genre, because after a while your stuff starts to sound the same,” said 25-year-old Joe Kaplan, who plays lead guitar and sings backup vocals. “I love hard rock.

I love blues. I love avant-garde Frank Zappa-esque music that’s all over the place, so it feels good to be playing in a reggae band but also blending other elements into that mix.”

Their collective influences include Bob Marley, Sublime, Maynard Ferguson, Miles Davis, Tony Iom-

mi, Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, among others.

Each of the sextet’s members are SUNY Oneonta alumni (except for drummer Andrew Platt, who will graduate next month), but none of them anticipated being in this band. It began as a fluke when Tierney couldn’t find anyone to play Marley-inspired music at the 4/20 festival, so he brought a few of his friends together to fit the bill.

That was three years ago, and the Potatoes are showing no sign of slowing down. Last summer, they bought a small school bus for $600 and drove down the East Coast on a self-booked tour with the Long Island-based Samurai Pizza Cats, playing 10 shows in 11 days.

Alto-saxophonist Jesse Hermann laughed when he recalled the band staying at an Airbnb in Satellite Beach, Fla., during their tour. It was a yellow hut called the Banana Hammocks, and in the morning their host invited them to do nude yoga on the beach.

“He told us a story about his son who works in the Colorado marijuana fields,” said Hermann. “He was

a great dude. None of us did yoga with him but, hey, at least he offered.”

Going on tour was a goal for the Potatoes to scratch from the group’s bucket list, as was recording a full-length album.

They recorded Loaded at Syracuse’s Subcat Studios, and it’s been nine months in the making. Tierney, Kaplan and Hermann are joined by Andrew Orlean on bass, drummer Andrew Platt and Aaron Roman on trumpet.

Baked Potatoes’ next goal is to open for groups like Pepper and Slightly Stoopid.

At the Westcott show, they’re opening for the Hip Abduction and John Brown’s Body, both major players in the reggaerock-funk world. It was a happy accident that JBB needed a local reggae group to perform on April 20, and Baked Potatoes already hoped to digitally release Loaded on that date.

As for the group’s favorite tracks on the album, they resoundingly agree that “No Shirt No Shoes” is a winner, having begun as a pithy bass riff written on the bus ride to Florida and growing into a seven-minute magnum opus. In the middle of the song, the music drops and Platt takes over on a drum solo, followed by the rest of the group slowly building back the groove-inducing beat.

“We didn’t intend on putting it on the album,” noted Orlean, “and we were in the studio and just kept layering and layering and layering parts on top of it. It could’ve been a 30-second clip in between two awesome songs and it turned into the longest song on the album.”

The band plans to relocate westward, most likely Flagstaff, Ariz., where Platt will begin studies for a graduate degree in geology.

“He’s thinking about his future and we just want to be in a band,” said Tierney in jest.

Platt replied with a smile, “I’m still trying to do both.” SNT
