Alfie by Bill Naughton

Hollywood and Vegas Showcase

Blackeyed Theatre in association with South Hill Park Arts Centre

The Academy of Future Stars

Sat 23 January 7.30pm Made famous by movies starring Michael Caine and more recently Jude Law, Alfie is the brilliant, original stage play about a young man with an overwhelming desire for the ladies.

Sun 24 January 7.30pm The Academy of Future Stars are proud to present an evening of entertainment with a sparkling Las Vegas/Hollywood theme – from Mamma Mia to Phantom of the Opera and from Beyonce to The Beatles.

Combining great comedy and genuine pathos, as well as live 60s music, it tells the story of a cockney ‘Don Juan’ who swaggers and philosophises his way from conquest to conquest, carefully rejecting anyone or anything that might touch him too deeply. From the artistic team that created the hugely acclaimed 2008 production of Oh What A Lovely War comes a major revival of Bill Naughton’s classic comedy drama. “One of the most innovative and critically acclaimed theatre companies on the touring circuit today” The Stage Tickets £9–£13 (£6–£11 concessions) Free post show Q&A www.blackeyedtheatre.co.uk

Ludwig String Trio & Bengt Forsberg

King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys

Fri 29 January 7.30pm BRAHMS Piano Quartet in C minor Op.60 SCHUMANN Piano Quartet in E flat Op.47 DVORÁK Piano Quartet in E flat Op.87

Sat 30 January 7.30pm King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys are more than just the world’s greatest swing band, they are an institution!

The Ludwig String Trio sees three of today’s finest chamber musicians (Peter Cropper, James Boyd and Paul Watkins) perform some of the most popular string trio repertoire. Here they play with top Swedish pianist Bengt Forsberg, a regular soloist with the symphony orchestras in Sweden and Scandinavia.

The band has been on the road for two decades playing every European country as well as the USA and Russia and recording ten CDs.

Brahms spent twenty years re-drafting this quartet before it was finally published. It is full of energetic yet disturbing vigour and passion which reflects his turbulent thoughts of selfdoubt. Schumann was a pianist inspired by the music of Beethoven; both of which are evident in his Op.47 quartet. Dvorak’s Op.87 quartet was premiered just days before he started writing the Dumky piano trio. The quartet is one of his most romantic pieces – the theme of this concert. Tickets £13.50 (£11 concessions) 20% off if book for whole MITR season

Dazzling musicianship, riveting stage performances, more than 50 TV appearances (including, somewhat bizarrely, Teletubbies) and 75 radio broadcasts have established them as the Kings of Swing. “To those who say that swing is a musical form best left to Americans, prepare to be proven wrong. This British combo is bullet-proof!” Atomic Magazine, New York Tickets £10–£15 (£6–£13 concessions) www.myspace.com/ kingpleasurethebiscuitboys

Thurs 4 March 7.30pm Britain’s top female comedy trio is 25 years old. Well, actually, they’re older than that (Dillie Keane formed FA in 1983), but the girls have decided their Silver Jubilee can be celebrated for a few more years at least.

For those of you who thought they’d retired, this isn’t a comeback; it’s a chance for you to help them celebrate this auspicious birthday. They’re doing it for the fun, not the money, which will soon be worthless anyway. Thrill to the beauty of the harmonies, marvel at the intricate rhymes and, if you’re one of their older fans, remember to switch your hearing aid to the theatre’s loop system to avoid unpleasant whistling. “Hilarious, funny and filthily rude” The Daily Telegraph Tickets £9–£13 (£6–£11 concessions) www.fascinatingaida.co.uk

Forever in your Debt Foursight Theatre & Talking Birds

Wed 31 March 7.30pm A band rolls into town. Teetering on the edge of fiscal failure, their woeful stories of debt and despair weave a cautionary tale that pulls on our heartstrings, pricks our conscience, and prods the old pathos bone. This gang of recession renegades might not be able to pay the bill but they can still top it. 5 Soldiers The Body is the Frontline Rosie Kay Dance Company Wed 5 May 7.30pm 5 Soldiers is a timely, controversial, thought provoking and moving exploration of war in modern times. A dance theatre work with four male and one female dancer, it looks at how the human body is essential to, and used in, warfare. Featuring Kay’s trademark intense physicality and athleticism, 5 Soldiers uses interviews with current and former soldiers to weave a story of physical transformation, helping us understand how soldiers are made and how war affects them. 5 Soldiers is a unique collaboration between award winning choreographer Rosie Kay, visual

artist David Cotterrell and theatre director Walter Meierjohann. It follows an intense period of research, where Rosie learnt battle training with The 4th Battalion The Rifles and David spent time in Helmand Province with the Joint Forces Medical Group. “Rosie Kay, one of our more enterprising young choreographers… Kay’s choreography is a strenuously sensual marriage of polished recklessness splattered with lascivious amusements.” The Times Tickets £9–£13 (£6–£11 concessions) Free post show Q&A www.rosiekay.co.uk

Paul Jones, Digby Fairweather and his Half-Dozen Rockin’ in Rhythm

Fri 28 May 7.30pm HAYDN Quartet in D Op.71 No.2 DEBUSSY Quartet in G minor MENDELSSOHN Quartet in F minor Op.80 Chosen as 2009 BBC Music Magazine Newcomer of the Year and short-listed as Ensemble of the Year at the Victoires de la Musique Classique in France, this widely acclaimed French quartet has a dynamism and open-minded versatility to its performances that is rare. Perhaps it comes from the musicians’ dual life as jazz musicians? Haydn’s Opus 71 quartets are markedly different in sound to his other quartets because they were written with the intention of concert performance instead of for private consumption. Similarly, Mendelssohn’s Opus 80 is outside of his usual calm character. Written just after his sister’s death, it’s a short, intense work full of drama and pain. Between the two, the Ebène play music from their homeland. This is Debussy’s only string quartet and has his typically impressionistic and expressive sound. Tickets £13.50 (£11 concessions) 20% off if book for whole MITR season www.quatuorebene.com www.musicintheround.co.uk
