CBN to bar bank debtors from forex market Tony Chukwunyem

n a bid to check bank debtors that have refused to repay their loans, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is considering denying them access to
foreign exchange in the interbank markets. The Director, Banking Supervision at the CBN, Mrs. Tokunbo Martins, told journalists at the end of the Bankers’ Committee meeting in Lagos yes-
terday that the Central Bank might publish the list of the delinquent borrowers in the newspapers. Tokunbo said although the Non Performing Loans (NPLs) level was still below the prescribed limit
of five percent of total loans in the industry, the Bankers’ Committee was disturbed by the increasing number of debtors not meeting their debt repayment obligations. She said: “The CBN
has managed to keep the banking industry safe and sound in collaboration with all members of the Bankers' Committee. But one issue that was of concern is that some data show that it is increas-
ingly becoming difficult for some debtors to pay up their loans. So, it was decided that going forward, one thing that we may do is to stop them from getting access to foreign exchange. CONTINUED ON PAGE 5
