T
he Federal Government’s foot-dragging in renewing the 20-year oil leases in Nigeria for Shell,
Chevron, Total and Eni (former Agip), six years after the expiration of their licences, is causing concern in the oil industry, it was learnt at the weekend.
As a result of the government’s delay, the companies, against their wishes, have been operating onshore fields with expired licences since 2008.
The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, had during the signing of the renewal of document for ExxonMobil, another In-
ternational Oil Company (IOC) in May 2012, told the gathering in Abuja that the licences for the remaining four multinationals would be renewed in June 2012. The minister had in May 2012 pledged govern-
