or the second day running, female suicide bombers yesterday attacked Kano, the
commercial nerve centre of the North. Three persons were killed and 10 others were severely injured in the twin attacks targeted at
the Nigerian National Petroleum (NNPC) Mega Station and the Trade Fair Complex, Kano. Another female suicide bomber had blown
up herself on Sunday at a police checkpoint in Kano when she was ordered to stop for a search by a team of policemen manning the checkpoint.

he Federal Government has intensified efforts to curtail the
spread of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Nigeria following the discovery of a patient in Lagos last week. Further investigations into the case, carried out
in conjunction with the Lagos State Government, have revealed that 59 others, including Nigerian Ambassador to Liberia, Chigozie Obi-Nnadozie,
had contact with Mr. Patrick Sawyer, the EVD victim who died in Lagos last Thursday. The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide
Idris, at a news conference yesterday in Lagos, said the 59 people had contact with the late Sawyer, a senior diplomat with the CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is deadly. According to the World Health Organisation, EVD outbreaks have a case fatality rate of up to 90 per cent. Formerly known as Ebola haemorrhagic fever, it is a severe, often-fatal illness primarily occurring in remote villages in Central and West Africa, near tropical rain forests.

EVD is transmitted from animals: It is contracted by humans after contact with wild animals. The fruit bat — also called megabat or odd world fruit bat — is the natural host of the Ebola virus. Fruit bats are known to house a number of diseases that are lethal to humans, yet they themselves are rarely affected. The virus is now being spread via human-to-human transmission.
