he Chief Executive of Italian energy giant, Eni, Claudio Descalzi, is being investigated over suspected corruption linked to a $1.1 billion oil
deal in Nigeria. A Milan prosecutor is probing the role of Descalzi, his predecessor and another Eni executive over their roles in the Italian group's 2011 acquisition, in partnership with Shell,
of the rights to an oil field, OPL245. The field has been estimated to contain as much as nine billion barrels of crude oil. According to a report published yesterday in an

he military yesterday intensified efforts to recapture Gwoza, Michika, Gulak and other towns in Borno and Adamawa States seized by
Boko Haram in a series of attacks aimed at expanding areas to bring under its self-declared Islamic Caliphate. In furtherance of its determination to curtail the expansionist tendency of the terrorist group and
reassert the sovereignty of Nigeria over the seized towns, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) said tactical and operational strategies were being reviewed. Five hundred more troops have also been deployed in the battle field,
especially to boost the fight to retake Mubi from the insurgents. It added that troops had been put on the alert to halt any Boko Haram's advance on Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. CONTINUED ON PAGE 5
