Esplanade At Wiregrass Ranch, Valencia Ridge & Amberlin Apartments Are Adding ‘Curb Appeal’ For Active Seniors!

Introduction By Gary Nager Wesley Chapel is one of the fastest-growing communities in the U.S. and even though it is primarily known for being a haven for young families, portions of the community are being built to accommodate older adults, too.

After nearly a one-year delay, Amberlin Apartments, a 55+ rental community located on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. across from BayCare Wesley Chapel hospital, finally welcomed its first residents on Dec. 10. In addition, two large single-family 55+ communities are taking shape along the extension of Chancey Rd. — one also in Wiregrass Ranch and the other just east of it.

Esplanade at Wiregrass is actually the second 55+ community with a Wesley Chapel address (the built-out Anand Vihar in Meadow Pointe was the first), and the Taylor Morrison Homes community already has homes on 600 of its 800 total lots.

Further to the east on the Chancey Rd. extension is Valencia Ridge, the GL Homes community we told you about months ago but which is just now coming on line with model homes, to the north of its “sister” GL Homes community — Winding Ridge.

2024 In The Rear View — Downtowns, Chicken Places, Kelly Gilroy & More!

There’s no doubt that 2024 was an amazing and crazy year in Wesley Chapel. One supposed “downtown” began building early in the year, while another just got approval to begin building near the end of the year. A seemingly neverending supply of hot chicken sandwich places either opened or were ready to open as the year ended. New road projects finally got started and Wesley Chapel continued to see explosive growth — much of which was chronicled not only in these pages, but in the seemingly magical Pasco County Development & Growth Updates Facebook page. But, its usual leader, Kelly Gilroy, admitted to yours truly that she hasn’t been using her real name on her wildly popular Facebook page. So, here are some highlights of the year that was, 2024 in Wesley Chapel: Road Projects — With both Old Pasco Rd. and Wesley Chapel Blvd. beginning to be widened, the traffic will get worse for two or three (or more) years on each before it gets better.

Chicken Wars — It’s hard for some of us who aren’t big fans of spicy chicken to believe we really need ten or more of these chains (the left photo above is the ribbon cutting of the Wesley Chapel Hangry Joe’s chicken), but we’re still getting them anyway!

It looks like Raising Cane’s will be the last to open, in January (Chicken Guy! should be open as you’re reading this), and when it does, the Neighborhood News will sponsor a contest to find the favorite of them all, as selected by a panel of hot chicken lovers — and no, I won’t be one of those judges!

Dueling Downtowns — Avalon Park Wesley Chapel developer Beat Kahli believes that the opening of his first mixed-use downtown building in Sept. (center photo) was the official launch of Wesley Chapel’s official downtown. But, Wiregrass Ranch developer JD Porter says his Legacy Downtown, which just had its development plan approved earlier this month, will prove to be The Chap’s true downtown when it begins building next year.

Kilroy, er Gilroy, Was Here! — Taking all of Pasco County, but especially Wesley Chapel, by storm in 2024 was the Pasco County Development & Growth Updates Facebook page, which went from 0 to tens of thousands of ardent admirers in just a few months. Page admin Kelly Gilroy has become something of a cult figure, even though it seems a large percentage of the people who respond to the page’s literally hundreds of posts only want to make jokes about car washes and storage facilities.

The fact that Ms. Gilroy has gotten some Pasco officials to question whether or not she’s a real person is reason enough for me to name her Wesley Chapel’s “Person of the Year.” Will we ever find out her real name? Do we even want to know it?

And Then There’s...Some of the incredible and sometimes unexpected things that happened in our area in 2024 include: the opening in November of Cooper’s Hawk; the announcement in October that Cheesecake Factory was coming to a portion of the already stressed parking lot at the Tampa Premium Outlets; the new Publix at Innovation Springs (in front of Epperson on Curley Rd.) included a beer-and-wine bar; the long-awaited Whole Foods announced it was coming to Bruce B. Downs Blvd. in Meadow Pointe, then took it back and said it wasn’t, then re-announced that it was; people on every Wesley Chapel community Facebook page complained vehemently about the Pasco Board of County Commissioners and vowed to vote them all out, but all four running for reelection won by landslides; Orlando Health began building Wesley Neighborhood News

Chapel’s third hospital and Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital officially announced that it will build a children’s hospital near Overpass Rd.; and finally, two New Tampa kids stunned the world, as 12-year-old Bruhat Soma won the Scripps National

‘Age 55+ Communities’ Continued from pg. 1

Esplanade At Wiregrass Ranch

This time of year is especially busy for a certain sector of real estate in Florida — the age 55+ community. Florida prides itself on noteworthy 55+ communities like Sun City Center, one of the first master planned retirement communities in the US, and The Villages, the largest in the world, with more than 80,000 residents sprawled across multiple Florida counties (and still growing).

Wesley Chapel has recently been getting in on this growing trend, and for good reason — location, location, location! And, were not talking about just the weather, but more like what Wesley Chapel has to offer in regards to extensive access to world class health care options (including two, and soon to be three, hospitals and a huge variety of medical specialists) and lots of local dining, shopping, entertainment and leisure activities.

Surprisingly, most of these new residents in Wesley Chapel are not seasonal — many just come down “in season” to buy or rent and become permanent residents, and many of them are retired.

Three of the newest communities where builders are still rushing to get a foothold in this age 55+ market are Esplanade at Wiregrass Ranch (by Taylor Morrison), Valencia Ridge (by GL Homes), and Amberlin at Wiregrass Ranch (by Sparrow Living), although more are on the way.

Esplanade, touted as, “One of Taylor Morrison’s beautiful, 55+ resort lifestyle communities,” has been open for a couple of years now and is being built in phases, with about 600 homes built in four phases so far. With those first phases nearing build-out, the community’s last two phases — 5a and 5b — will add around another 200 lots.

asked not to be named, said that Phase 4 took a little longer than expected, due to the project having to extend the main road through the community — Provincale Pkwy. — further to the south, where it will soon intersect with the Chancey Rd. extension at a second gated entry for the Esplanade community.

As you travel north along Wiregrass Ranch Blvd. past the many roundabouts, you come to an all-way stop intersection with Chancey Rd., which serves the communities of Estancia, the Arbors at Wiregrass and Persimmon Park.

Now heading east from that intersection is the new Chancey Rd. extension, which began building in 2023 and “appeared” to be completed earlier this year. But, anyone who has driven past it has noticed the “Road Closed” and “Sidewalk Closed” barriers that have been sitting there for a couple of months now, blocking access to that new 0.7-mile stretch of road.

At the other end of that Chancey Rd. extension is the location for that future second gated entry for Esplanade, which will provide direct access to Phases 5A and 5B, which is why dump trucks have been going down there day after day — they’ve been using it as a construction entrance so as not to drive through the rest of the community.

That part of Chancey Rd. will likely be opened once the new gate is constructed and functional, but it might not be until after all passes are completed, and it is no longer being used as a construction entrance. It’s too early to tell and those details were not yet available at our press time.

At some point in the future, Chancey Rd. will be extended even further east to intersect with Meadow Pointe Blvd, tying in at the existing signal that serves Double Branch Elementary and the Haven at Meadow Pointe subdivision.

Our source told us that some other details are

not available yet, such as when sales of the lots in Phases 5A and 5B will begin (or what the pricing for those homes will be), but we were told that the 75’-wide lot option is no longer going to be offered. According to the community sales map, that means that only 45’-, 52’- and 62’-wide lots would be available in these new phases.

The same person told us that one big difference between Esplanade and the planned Valencia Ridge community (see next page) are the lot sizes — noting that while the width options are the same, the lot depths in Esplanade are significantly deeper — with 135’-, 145’- and 155’-ft. depths in Esplanade vs. 110’-, 125’- and 135’-ft. depths at Valencia Ridge (as shown in the Valencia Ridge FAQ sheet) for similar-width lots.

While this may not sound like that big of a deal, the depth differences can mean the difference between having a pool and no yard vs. having a

pool and some usable yard left over, or having a pool with an extended patio option, which is a fantastic option Taylor Morrison offers with homes in Esplanade, and with some patios as large as 570 sq ft. (Note-Valencia Ridge does offer similar size patio extensions on some floor plans).

However, our review of the plat for Valencia Ridge on the Pasco property appraiser’s website showed multiple premium oversized lots with depths up to 155’. But, it appears the most common lot depth in Valencia Ridge is 135’.

We also noticed that the lots the future model homes are located on are 145’ or 155’ deep and 63’ wide, which is not typical in Valencia Ridge, so potential buyers always need to be fully aware of the lot size of the model they looked at vs. the lot size of any lot they are interested in purchasing.

Our source with Esplanade said that it’s likely that a total of eight floor plans will be offered in the community, going all the way up to around 3,000 sq. ft., with 3-car garages, 4 bedrooms & 3 bathrooms. The planned designs are a great blend between traditional and modern looks with fantastic exterior detailing. Current base prices in the existing phases in Esplanade (but it’s unknown if this pricing will translate to the new phases) range from $400,000+ to $800,000+.

Esplanade, which was named the 2023 Single-Family Community of the Year by the Tampa Bay Builders Assn., includes a beautiful clubhouse, known as The Venue, with fitness and aerobics, meeting and gathering spaces, a catering kitchen, billiards and multi-purpose rooms. Outside, there’s a heated resort-style pool and spa, resistance pool and outdoor BBQ grill, walking trails, event and fitness lawn, fenced “bark park” and tot lot playground.

Valencia Ridge Update

We first told you about the upcoming Valencia Ridge community in our March 19 issue.

The Valencia Brand claims to be “Experts in 55+ Living Since 1996,” with Valencia Ridge being the 20th Valencia community since the developer began, with the others being located all up and down the east and west coasts of Florida.

Although it’s not quite as centrally located in Wesley Chapel as Esplanade (as it is located 3.5 miles further east on the outskirts of Wesley Chapel), Valencia Ridge’s location is still good, nestled on the property just north of Winding Ridge, which also is a GL Homes community, but which is not age-restricted. Valencia Ridge will be built in three phases, totaling 517 lots, with the initial 1st and 2nd phases (being built together) having 395 homesites between them.

The Valencia Ridge sales team members, like Tim Nelson, have been operating out of a model in the built-out Winding Ridge community, but are getting very close to moving to the north in an actual Valencia Ridge model. These planned models can be seen as renderings in the packet that’s available at the Valencia Ridge sales office in Winding Ridge. The move won’t happen until the portion of Two Ridges Rd from S.R. 56 to Valencia Ridge, has been completed. Tim says they were hopeful the road would have been done in time to move the sales office into the Valencia property this month, with the models opening after the holidays, ideally around or on January 18, 2025. He says that all depends upon when the road can be opened to traffic, something he is eagerly awaiting.

In our article about Wyndfields Blvd. (the road with many names) in July 2024, we mentioned that Two Ridges Rd. would be aligning with Wyndfields Blvd at S.R. 56 (and will be signalized in the near future) as it builds north 1.7 miles to the entrance of Valencia Ridge.

That portion of Two Ridges Rd. has been under construction since 2019, but is getting very close to finally receiving pavement.

Even more exciting is that we had previously mentioned that the northern 0.4 miles to connect to S.R. 54 (at the signal with River Glen Blvd) would be done at a later date, but that appears to be happening now! We saw earth movers and excavators in full force between the entrance of Valencia Ridge and S.R. 54, making way for the rest of Two Ridges Rd. to be completed from S.R. 56 all the way to SR 54.

In the portion of this story about Esplanade, we discussed the difference in lot sizes and how that (according to our source) could affect the ability to have pools and usable yards.

We wanted to mention here that the FAQs for Valencia Ridge state that pools are being offered, “as an available option for purchase, and many home sites can accommodate a pool. However, our Signature Collection Homes [with 110’ lot depths] will not accommodate pools.”

When the models do open early next year, there will be at least one model for each of the available nine floor plans, ranging from the 1,674- sq.-ft. Camelia model, with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a 2-car garage, to the 3,139-sq.-ft.

Emerald model, with 4 bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms and a 3-car garage. Like Esplanade, current pricing in Valencia Ridge is within the $400,000+$800,000+ range.

Tim also said that one important difference between Valencia Ridge and Esplanade is that, of all things, Valencia Ridge will allow all yards to be fully

was completed (top photo on next page), its interior furnishings and amenities, including what looks like it will be a beautiful resort-style pool and the much-anticipated pickleball court, were not yet completed.

Amberlin sales specialist Kylie Ward, who Jannah and I call “Smiley Kylie,” and her co-workers have somehow kept their wits about them amidst a growing chorus of concern among Amberlin’s current and future residents.

“It hasn’t been easy,” Kylie admitted to us on Dec. 12, “but we are excited to finally have residents moving in and getting settled. We hope to have the interior of the clubhouse, the pool and even the furnished model unit (the lower photo on this page is the kitchen in a two-bedroom + office unit) completed by sometime in January.”

In the meantime, Amberlin tenants like Fran Lott (see photo on page 1), who has been living in a local hotel for the last few months because she had already sold her villa in Seven Oaks, says that what Amberlin has to offer has been worth the wait.

“I’ve already met and become friends with so many wonderful fellow tenants here,” Fran told us while directing her movers where to place her

furniture, art and books. “Amberlin already has been providing me with a wonderful social life and that’s really the main reason I wanted to move in here in the first place.”

So, even though most of the 204 total units are not yet complete and the entire community is still something of a construction site, it does appear that Amberlin at Wiregrass Ranch has at least turned the corner.

Adwaith Praveen Achieves A Perfect Triple!

Tampa Palms Resident Defies The Odds With Perfect Scores On The PSAT, SAT & ACT!

Neighborhood News Correspondent A Tampa Palms resident has accomplished an outstanding academic feat by earning perfect scores on the PSAT (1520), SAT (1600) and ACT (36) exams and is likely the first to do so in the 30+ year history of the Neighborhood News, according to our editor.

Strawberry Crest High junior Adwaith Praveen has joined an elite group of test takers who achieved all three of these perfect scores. Adwaith says he chose Strawberry Crest, located in Dover (near I-4), for its International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme and his family knows that these perfect test scores are just one measure of Adwaith’s academic acumen.

While standardized entrance exams have changed and evolved over time, their difficulty is widely recognized, as they stress out millions of high school students who take them annually. The number of students who have achieved perfect scores on all three tests is hard to pinpoint since the exams only publicly share general info.

However, in a typical year, only 0.1%0.2% of ACT test-takers will receive a perfect score of 36. This means that out of the approximately 1.4 million students who took the test in 2023, only 1,400 – 2,800 likely scored a 36. When it comes to the SAT, that number is even smaller.

Scoring a perfect 1600 on the SAT is something that only 0.03%-0.05% accomplish. Out of the 1.9 million students who took the SAT in 2023, only 570-950 would manage a perfect score. To achieve perfection on all three tests is even more rare, most likely in the low 100s annually nationwide.

For perspective, the average SAT score in Florida in 2023 was only 966 — 463 on the math and 503 on the evidence-based reading and writing (ERW) section of the exam.

ic inclination,” he shares. “I watch a lot of documentaries. I read a lot of books about science. I always try to learn new things and take harder courses.”

That determination to push himself fueled Adwaith’s choice of middle and high schools — neither of which is located in the New Tampa/Wesley Chapel area.

“We decided to give me the best learning opportunities and best environment,” explains Adwaith. He attended Terrace Community Middle School (TCMS) in Temple Terrace, a charter school that was named the #1 school in Hillsborough County and one of the “100 Best Bets in Charter Schools” nationally. And, Strawberry Crest’s IB program offers rigorous, pre-university coursework for highly motivated students. The comprehensive academic program integrates literature, science and language, in addition to other curriculum areas.

As part of his IB program, Adwaith is currently taking courses in Chemistry, high-level (HL) Physics (which is apparently a step above the AP Physics offered at most high schools) and HL Mathematics.

Adwaith, who has an unweighted grade-point average (GPA) of 4.0, describes how he manages his strenuous academic requirements. One key strategy, he says, is avoiding procrastination. He utilizes time blocks allotted for study and work on assignments during the school day in order to take care of what he can before ever leaving the campus. Then, upon arriving home after school, he makes sure to get his homework finished before anything else.

“I definitely spend a lot of time practicing for HL Mathematics, because it’s a rigorous course,” Adwaith says. “But most of the courses I’m taking do take quite a bit of studying and knowledge. Whenever there’s a test, I will generally be study-

ing for that, whether it’s AP US History, Chemistry, Physics or Math.”

Self-Motivation

Adwaith says his parents absolutely support and encourage him, but they don’t pressure him. In fact, he is the one that chooses to put in all the extra effort.

“A lot of it is my own motivation,” says Adwaith. “I want to score high on my tests, and do good in school, so I can have a better future.”

His parents say that Adwaith’s passion for learning was evident at a young age. His father, Gopinath, and mother, Anupama, both earned Master’s degrees from universities in India, and have always encouraged and supported his growing curiosity and interests. His father, who works in IT for a bank, says that there were early signs of his son’s talents.

fascination for numbers,” recalls Gopinath.

“Before kindergarten, he could count into really high numbers and would remember things like Googolplex (or 10 to the 100th power). That kind of caught everyone’s attention.” Adwaith’s interests as a child also included a fascination with the solar system, as he remembered the names of constellations, stars and planets.

Upon realizing that Adwaith had a gift and could easily remember things, his parents did whatever they could to nurture his talents and encourage him to always aim higher. While prioritizing academics is important to the family, Anupama , a Hillsborough County substitute teacher, explains proudly that she and her husband “don’t have to push him,” although they did make a point of encouraging Adwaith’s love of reading by taking him to the library and coming home with 30-40 books as well as buying him others — mostly nonfiction, such as Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, by Yuval Noah Harari, that sparked his interest throughout his youth.

Adwaith knows that his voracious reading background was one of the keys to his perfect scores on the standardized tests.

He says that reading regularly exposed him to more grammar and vocabulary than most children pick up.

“At some point you will just be able to read a passage and [know] that something doesn’t sound right and which phrasing sounds more natural,” he says.

When it comes to tackling math, physics and chemistry, Adwaith has this advice: “Write down examples and do them on your own. Once you learn the concept, do practice problems. Practice problems are key.”

Adwaith acknowledges that everyone has their own unique learning style, but he is happy to share the strategies that have helped him academically. “The best thing you can do is be generally passionate about what you do,” he says.

When asked if she felt pressured to achieve similar scholastic success as her brother, Adwaith’s sister Parvati, a 13 year-

old 8th grader, also at TCMS, had only positive things to say.

“I don’t really feel pressure to get that score,” she shares. “But it does inspire me knowing that someone in my family could get a perfect score. If I work hard enough, maybe I could get one, too.”

While Parvati, like her brother, also enjoys math classes, playing the piano is one of her favorite activities. She has been playing for eight years.

Even with his heavy academic load, Adwaith makes time to relax and enjoy life, too. Like many teens, he enjoys playing

video games and he does like to tinker with coding and programming. However, reading is one of his favorite ways to relax and unwind.

“I like to sit on the porch and read a book,” he says. “It’s really nice with the sun shining through.”

Gopinath says his son also owns and spends a lot of time looking at the stars with his Dobsonian telescope (a design invented in 1965 by amateur astronomer John Dobson, which is credited with vastly increasing the size of telescopes available to amateur astronomers). “Adwaith has always been fascinated by the stars,” Gopinath says.

And, while he does generally try to hang out with like-minded teens, who also put an emphasis on academics, Adwaith never lets his unique interests and achievements create a gap between him and his peers. Instead, he looks for their commonalities.

“When I’m interacting with people, we usually use a common medium like games,” he says, “When I am talking with people, we will talk about shared interests.”

While he is currently undecided when it comes to what college he wants to attend (although he has mentioned both Georgia Tech and the University of Florida in Gainesville) and what field he plans to enter, Adwaith is excited about what the future holds. While his drive and levelheaded-ness can not measured by standardized tests, those traits will continue to be the key to his ongoing success.

New Driving Range The First Of Many Improvements At Saddlebrook!

Photos by Charmaine George & GN Since Mast Capital purchased Saddlebrook Resort & Spa from the resort’s late founder and owner Tom Dempsey back in 2022, the Wesley Chapel community has been anxiously waiting to see what Mast was going to do to update and upgrade what was once the jewel of Wesley Chapel.

To that end, on Dec. 11, Saddlebrook and Mast unveiled the resort’s newly relocated golf driving range with a “first drive” ceremony, a champagne toast (photo on next page) and a great party that the possibility of heavy rain cut short.

With Saddlebrook’s former driving range along S.R. 54 being replaced with apartments, the range was relocated to a portion of the former Palmer Course, one of two Arnold Palmer-designed 18-hole courses at the resort. But, Mast decided to do away with nine of the Palmer Course’s 18 holes and the new driving range takes up about six of the other nine holes.

When the renovations are complete, Saddlebrook will be left with 27 holes of championship golf.

Mast Capital chief investment officer Jordan Kornberg promised that the new driving range “is just the beginning. We will be returning Saddlebrook to its former glory.”

Among those joining Kornberg for the ceremonial first drive (complete with exploding golf balls) were the resort’s managing director Raj Mohan, District 1 Pasco County Commissioner Jack Mariano and Florida Sports Coast executive director Adam Thomas.

Mohan said he was looking forward to the community seeing the changes now in motion at Saddlebrook and Mariano also expressed excitement for the future of the resort.

Tampa Bay Area’s First Surf Park Coming To Two Rivers!

Even though he grew up in Tampa, Peak Surf Park developer and businessman Tony Miller says he and his friends spent a lot of time driving to Florida’s east coast to catch whatever waves were available.

“Sometimes, we did a lot more paddling than surfing,” Tony says, “which was kind of disappointing after driving all that way.”

But today, at age 57, the still-surfing former owner of SPARK, a marketing and advertising agency in Tampa that had Visit Florida and Visit Tampa Bay as two of its largest clients, says his plan is that, “anyone who wants to surf, whether they just want to learn how or are already experts, to be able to do so, with waves that will always be perfect for them. That’s why I’m bringing Peak Surf Park to Pasco County,” which of course, also is known as “Florida’s Sports Coast.”

Tony says he has been studying all of the different “surf lagoon” technologies available and chose Australia-based Surf Lakes, which he says, “has the highest-capacity surf lagoons, with 200 surfers per hour.” He adds that some of Surf Lakes’ competitors can only accommodate nine surfers per hour.

“This technology sends out a wave in each direction,” he says. “Because it’s a full 360º lagoon, with a central wave device (CWD) or ‘plunger’ in the middle, it sends a pulse out and it’s like dropping a rock in a pond — it ripples out in concentric waves. That search began after Tony commissioned an economic impact study by Hotel & Leisure Advisors in 2022, which indicated that Peak would generate more than $1.3 billion in annual business output and 700 jobs per year, with tax revenue for the county he chose to be in nearly $150 million over ten years. He eventually was able to secure the 35 acres in Two Rivers, so the process of creating the park could begin. Tony also has launched a crowd-funding campaign that accredited investors can take advantage of to fund pre-construction and plans to launch a secondary campaign for retail investors.

He says that although there currently aren’t any surf lagoons anywhere in Florida, he knows a few will be coming online soon and notes that there are four different surf park technologies out there.

“There will be a bunch more lagoons coming to the U.S. over the next two years,” he says. “The entire surf park industry is in its infancy (no more than 5-6 years old), but, a lot more of these surf parks will be going public with announcements. I went public with my announcement earlier than most will. Because I haven’t been a developer, I do things a little bit differently than most developers — and I believe that’s a good thing. I think I’m getting a lot more positive than I am negative out of it, but most developers are pretty close to the vest when it comes to their projects. They don’t really announce anything until they’re ready to break ground.”

He likens surf parks today to where the skiing industry was in the 1930s, “when a few adventurous people would actually climb mountains to ski down them. The advent of chair lifts then opened up access to everyone, and the

AdventHealth News: Erik Wangsness & Ryan Quattlebaum Both Get New Jobs

Wesley Chapel Rotary’s Charity Casino Night Raises $87K For One Of Its Own As I told you last issue, my friends Troy (at left in top left photo) and Iris Stevenson sadly lost their daughter, Christina Ramirez, to pancreatic cancer.

The Rotary Club of Wesley Chapel, of which Troy is a long-time member, was already planning a Casino Night fund raiser at the Hilton Garden Inn Tampa-Wesley Chapel, to raise money for not only Christina’s ongoing treatment, but also Troy’s, as he also had been diagnosed with cancer. That event was held, as planned, on Nov. 23, and more than $87,000 was raised to help the family.

In addition to fun casino games, there also were silent auctions (including for some firearms), a 50-50 raffle and delicious food was included for the cost of admission, thanks to Rotary Club president Lisa Moore, who also is the market director of sales for the hotel. Your Kids Can Play Baseball & Softball With The North Tampa Athletic Association! by kids from Dade City and Zephyrhills who want to play in Wesley Chapel, while NTAA’s geographic location makes it sandwiched in between other areas where New Tampa kids can go to play, such as Lutz and Wesley Chapel.

That means there’s room in New Tampa for kids in nearby Wesley Chapel to be part of a league that this year is celebrating 10 years since switching from Little League Baseball to the Babe Ruth League, providing more flexibility for players who don’t live in New Tampa’s 33647 zip code.

Neighborhood News Correspondent For kids who want to play baseball and softball next spring, there was barely more than a brief moment in November when registration was open for the Spring 2025 season of Wesley Chapel Athletic Association (WCAA) Baseball & Softball. Within minutes, several divisions were filled and all WCAA divisions were on a waiting list 90 minutes later.

But, a few miles south of the Pasco-Hillsborough county line in New Tampa, registration is open for the North Tampa Athletic Association (NTAA). For many people in Wesley Chapel – such as those who live in Meadow Pointe – the New Tampa fields may be the same distance or even closer to home than some WCAA fields.

Robert Pickett, NTAA’s director of baseball for ages 12 and under, says NTAA is a great option for those Wesley Chapel families who missed out on joining WCAA. “We’re a thriving and growing league, right in the heart of New Tampa, but a lot of people don’t know about us,” Robert says.

While the league had more than 450 players last season, Robert says an ideal size would be closer to 600 or 700.

“The more teams there are, the more competitive it is,” Robert explains. “I’d rather have 10 teams in each division instead of three.

It’s more fun.”

That’s why he and others from the entirely volunteer-run league are increasing their recruiting efforts this year, hoping that new players

will grow the NTAA community.

The NTAA plays baseball and softball on two fields. One is Eber field, located near at the corner of Cross Creek Blvd. and Kinnan St., and the other is in Live Oak, behind Turner Bartels K-8 School off Bruce B. Downs Blvd.

“Every night, the parks are bustling,” Robert says. “If you drive by Eber Field on a Tuesday night, you’ll see games on two fields, concessions are open and families are everywhere,” he says. “You can go hang out and feel the sense of community.”

If you’re wondering why NTAA is still open for registration while WCAA is completely full, Robert says it all comes down to capacity.

With all of the explosive growth in Wesley Chapel, there’s simply more demand for youth

baseball and softball here than there is space for all of the kids who want to play.

Plus, since WCAA has a comprehensive sports program, with many other sports available, it attracts a much larger audience.

Kids who play soccer or have older siblings who play lacrosse, for example, are already aware of WCAA and are already in the pipeline to sign up for WCAA baseball and softball. The NTAA, on the other hand, is just a baseball and softball league and does not have other sports affiliated with it.

Because WCAA and NTAA are both part of the Babe Ruth League, there are flexible geographic boundaries, unlike the set boundaries for Little League Baseball programs.

So, WCAA’s capacity is further crunched

Robert says one of NTAA’s success stories is Duncan Pastore, a former Wharton High standout who recently signed with the New York Yankees and is currently playing for its Single-A affiliate, the Tampa Tarpons, at George M. Steinbrenner Field, next to Raymond James Stadium.

When Duncan played with the NTAA, his dad Lou was one of the league’s volunteers ensuring his son and others in the community had a thriving league for youth baseball and softball.

Lou Pastore even served as league president.

“Duncan playing with the Yankees (organization) is a dream come true,” Lou says. “It’s every kid’s dream to play professional baseball and eventually the Big Leagues. As you move up the ladder from high school to college, the chances of you making it one step further is less each time.

The fact that he was able to [make the jump to pro baseball] makes me, his mom, and everyone who knows him extremely proud of him.”

still maintains the fields for NTAA. “I have now taken care of every field Duncan (photo) has played on since he started playing baseball,” Lou says, adding that he takes a lot of pride in maintaining the NTAA fields so kids have an outstanding Duncan Pastore place to play.

(Source: Nova SE University) “It’s a great outlet to have fun,” Lou says of participation in NTAA. “Sports can teach kids a lot about how to grow up and mature and become great leaders and teammates. At the same time, kids can just go out and play and not have to worry about cleaning their room or all the things they have to do.”

Lou says NTAA taught his son to be a role model for other kids, which started with Duncan looking up to the older players, and then wanting to be like them.

“Duncan wanted to break the park’s home run record,” Lou explains, “and then, when he was 12, he did it. The younger kids looking on went chasing for that home run ball as if [Yankees star] Aaron Judge himself had hit it over the fence. They ran it back to the dugout and Duncan signed it and gave it back to them. He learned to be a role model at such a young age, and that’s a big part of who he is today.”

NTAA ‘Youth Day With The Pros’ The NTAA will host “Youth Day with the Pros,” a one-day baseball camp, on Saturday, January 11, at the baseball fields at Live Oak. Current professional baseball players, including NTAA alum Duncan Pastore, will put on a one-day camp for young players, ages 5-12.

Youth Day with the Pros is for players of any skill level who wants to prepare for the upcoming Spring 2025 baseball season by training with professionals.

To register, visit NT-AA.com camp for young players, ages 5 to 12 — and your kids can participate in the camp whether or not they are registered to play with NTAA. Duncan will be joined by other professional baseball players who want to give back to their community and mentor young people who want to sharpen their skills.

Board Introduced, Moore & Hess Win Awards At Chamber’s Annual Breakfast

Every year, the North Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce (NTBC) hosts an annual breakfast event where the Chamber thanks it outgoing Board of Directors for a job well done — and names a few award winners among those outgoing Board members — and introduces its new Board for the upcoming year.

On Dec. 3, Chamber president & CEO Hope Kennedy thanked and gave her “Distinguished Leadership” award to the 2024 Board chairman, Roberto Hiller of Signarama New Tampa, and named Board member (and 2025 Board treasurer) Jamie Hess of Computer Emergency Room (left photo) as her “President’s Award” winner for, “Going above and beyond for the organization, sitting by me during every major decision I had to make, and for helping negotiate the sweet, sweet deal we got on our new office space and helping install the new TVs at that new space” in the Shops at Wiregrass, which is now no longer in the Signature Workspace at the mall.

“For the last ten years,” Hope said, “the Board has heard me talk about wanting our own office where it finally is now. We have wanted this space (where the Amberlin Apartments and the Pasco Sheriff’s Office before that were located, next to Dillard’s, at 28329 Paseo Dr., Suite 195) and I kept telling the Shop,s ‘If that space ever comes open, we want it.’ And now, we have our own office, our own doors, our own boardroom table and we are so excited to be able to welcome all of you to it in January (at the Chamber’s monthly Coffee Social on Wednesday, January 15, at 9 a.m.).”

Hiller, who said that 132 new members joined the Chamber during 2024, also spoke of the challenges this year of two hurricanes, the need to assist the Great Pasco Chamber and others. He then gave out his “Chairman’s Award” to Board member (and vice-chair of Membership) Lisa Moore (center photo) of the Hilton Garden Inn & Hampton Inn Tampa-Wesley Chapel for, “contributions that have been exceptional. (Lisa) has attended every event, every Board meeting and been part of every important decision.” Hiller then passed his Chairman’s gavel to new Board chair Angelique Lenox (right photo).

Hope also welcomed Orlando Health, which is building a new hospital in Wiregrass Ranch, to her “President’s Circle” sponsorship level, which is the highest level of sponsorship for the NTBC, as she noted that it costs the Chamber more money per member than the cost to be a

member, “So it’s those investments from our larger companies, our Executive and President’s Circle members, that allow us to do what we do.” .She also thanked her 2024 Board for, “allowing me to jump into a situation to help the Greater Pasco Chamber, which had a transition in leadership, to be able to serve as both the CEO of my Chamber and the interim CEO of their Chamber to help them through a lot of foundational changes. They lost their building to the hurricane. So, through a lot of things we didn’t plan on happening, my Board has stood by and lifted me up to prop up our organization so we could have a great relationship with the Greater Pasco Chamber and we look forward to that continuing as we go into 2025.”

Next, Hope thanked outgoing Board members Michael Berthelette (a former Board chair) of Platinum Salon and Connie Bladon of AdventHealth Wesley Chapel, both of whom served full six-year terms on the Board.

Then, Hope said that the new Board actually

had three vacancies because Bimal Bhojani of Raining Berries gave up his seat after serving three years of his six-year term.

“The Board approved this slate at its Nov. 19 meeting,” she said, and asked 2022 Board chair and attorney Javan Grant to handle the swearing in of the new Board (top photo). The remaining three years on Bhojani’s six-year term are being served by Ryan Fink of Volkswagen of Wesley Chapel.

Hiller then passed his gavel to new Board chair Angelique Lenox of Tampa Family Health Centers, who said that, “It is with immense honor and great sense of responsibility that I stand before you today as the newly appointed chairwoman of this esteemed Board. I am deeply grateful for the trust and confidence you have placed in me and I am thrilled to embark upon this exciting journey with all of you. I am filled with pride to become the first Black woman to chair the North Tampa Bay Chamber. This milestone is not just a personal achievement, but a testament to our collective commitment to Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity and

Access, which spells ‘IDEA.’ These principles are the cornerstone of our mission and the driving force behind our success. By embracing ‘IDEA,’ we ensure that every voice is heard, every perspective is valued and every individual has the opportunity to contribute and thrive.”

Lenox also said one of her goals is to “bring more nonprofits into our Chamber to work alongside the small businesses and larger corporations that are within our community. Nonprofits play a crucial role in addressing social issues , providing essential serves and enhancing the quality of life in our community.”

Dr. Teena Hughes Has Been Caring For Local Kids For More Than 30 Years!

For more than 30 years, Teena Hughes, M.D., has been a trusted pediatrician in Tampa, supporting generations of families in their healthcare journeys. Born in Clewiston, FL, she was raised in the Fort Lauderdale and Orlando areas.

After earning her Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from the University of South Florida and completing her three-year pediatric residency at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, she spent several years gaining experience with a large healthcare group before deciding to open her own practice. Today, the Teena Hughes, M.D., P.A., Pediatrics office on E. Fletcher Ave. near N. 46th St., located only 20 minutes or so south of the Hillsborough County line near Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd.,, is wellknown by local parents and their children.

Dr. Teena’s eldest son, Roger Hughes, III, D.O., joined the practice in July 2021, but his route to pediatrics wasn’t immediate. After earning a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Microbiology from the University of Florida in Gainesville and completing his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree at the Bradenton, FL, campus of Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, he pursued a three-year residency at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, FL. Although he admits he initially was uncertain about focusing on pediatrics, Dr. Roger says everything changed during medical school.

“I was always interested in medicine and knew I would be a physician, but didn’t really have an interest in pediatrics” he says, “until I experienced it. In medical school you have a

Published in the prestigious Pediatrics (the official peer-reviewed flagship journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics), this research underscores the practice’s commitment to improving children’s health.

Commercial lender Vanessa Ng (photo) knows that busy entrepreneurs who want to grow their business don’t have time to call a bank, apply for a loan, wait to hear back, and then call a different bank if they’re turned down by or just not sure they like the first option.

“CommLoan is really efficient and can provide a quote to the borrower within minutes,” Vanessa explains. “We have a database of 750 lenders we work with through a proprietary system called CUPID, and, in some cases, it will give us back 300 options.”

CUPID, which stands for Commercial Underwriting Pricing Index Data, is an innovative platform developed by CommLoan, a company that was founded in 2014 in Scottsdale, AZ, by long-time mortgage banker Mitch Ginsberg.

CommLoan lends nationwide, except in Nevada, and North and South Dakota.

Vanessa joined CommLoan about a year ago, adding commercial lending to her 12-year career as a residential lender.

She currently works with business owners all over the country and is hoping to increase awareness of CommLoan locally in the New Tampa and Wesley Chapel areas.

Ellie Mental Health Provides Compassionate Care For Children, Adults & Couples

The holiday season,usually celebrated as a time of joy and togetherness, also can be especially challenging for those coping with the loss of loved ones, financial hardships and other personal struggles. The clinicians at Ellie Mental Health recognize these unique emotional difficulties and provide accessible outpatient services to support individuals in emotional need during these times and beyond. The clinic encourages both therapists and clients to be their true selves throughout the therapeutic journey.

“At Ellie Mental Health, the focus is on providing a comfortable, judgment-free environment where clients can be authentic and receive the care they need and deserve,” says clinical director Dina Hargrave. “Whether it’s the clients or the therapists, we want everyone to feel they are in a safe space.”

Ellie Mental Health is a franchise with more than 200 locations nationwide and 20 in Florida, including New Port Richey and Wesley Chapel.

The Mendota Heights, MN-based company opened its first franchise in 2022.

Dina is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in both Florida and Utah who has worked with children with significant behavioral concerns and their families for more than 10 years. She brings that experience to her role as the director and supervisor of the Wesley Chapel location of Ellie Mental Health.

Having previously lived in Tampa, she feels a connection to the region and is passionate about making a difference here.

“I enjoy managing people and helping them grow to their full potential. It’s rewarding to see both the clinicians and clients thrive, so when this position became available, I quickly said ‘Yes.’” Ellie Mental Health offers a wide range of therapeutic counseling services to meet a diverse range of mental health needs provided by two Registered Mental Health Counselor Interns

(RMHCI). An RMHCI is an individual who has completed requirements for becoming a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) but still needs to have supervised experience to meet the requirements for state licensure.

Those requirements include a Master’s degree or higher in mental health counseling, a minimum of 1,000 hours of supervised fieldwork and a minimum of 1,500 hours of face-to-face psychotherapy work under the supervision of a qualified LMHC with a minimum of 1,000 hours of that being direct supervision.

RMHCIs must pass the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) and participate in continuing education.

After fulfilling the internship requirements and passing the NCMHCE, an application for licen-

sure as an LMHC in Florida can be submitted.

At the Wesley Chapel office of Ellie Mental Health, RMHCI Rebekah “Chailee” Snyder received her Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Psychology from the University of South Florida in Tampa and her Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a Trauma Certificate from Antioch University.

Chailee works with children as young as age two.

She also works with adults.

Fellow RMHCI Engy Eskander received her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from USF Tampa and her M.A. degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. Engy focuses on clients ages 15 and older and she provides couples counseling, including services in Arabic.

The Wesley Chapel office offers play therapy for children as young as age two, plus therapy for adolescents, adults, couples and families, including Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). The clinicians also work with people with autism and those suffering with posttraumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. Also offered are Psychoeducation and Psychological Testing for kids, gender-affirming care, as well as faith-based counseling, which is available upon request. Dina says she currently is working on hiring more therapists so the available services can be expanded.

“We don’t offer a one-size-fits-all approach,” Dina emphasizes. “If a therapist isn’t the right fit for a particular client or lacks the necessary specialty, we can easily connect them with someone else, which ensures personalized care.”

She adds, “Wesley Chapel was a natural choice for the clinic’s location. The area’s rapid growth and the rising demand for mental health services made it an ideal spot. And so far, we’ve received positive feedback from the community.

People are glad we are here because there aren’t many options like us in this area.”

Dina also has been communicating with the Pasco County School District and says she looks forward to working with the District’s schools in the near future. She says she hopes to be able to offer services not only to the school children but their families as well.

She also says that having flexible hours available for clients and therapists is a feature that makes this Ellie Mental Health stand out. If the clinician is willing to work during the hours requested by the patient, Dina says those hours

will be approved. Once the sessions start, if the clinician is not sure where the problem lies, a psychological test can be used to help provide clarity in diagnosing and treating complex issues.

Even though Ellie Mental Health Wesley Chapel only opened in September, the clinic has already seen several success stories. Dina says one client made significant progress in just three sessions, while another, after six sessions, left with renewed hope despite having to relocate.

“These are the moments that remind us why we do this work,” Dina says.

Ellie Mental Health accepts most insurance plans, including Medicare, and Dina says, “We are working to finalize our Medicaid contract to better serve children and people with disabilities.”

“Being born can be pretty traumatic for babies,” Dr. Mac says. “I help infants with reflux, colic and infant adjustments, which are very different than the adjustments that I perform for adults. School-aged children also need help with pain from those heavy backpacks, ‘cell phone neck,’ minor sports injuries, scoliosis and allergies (sinuses). I’m also available to give sports physicals to students.”

He adds, “Pregnant women often suffer aches and pains and chiropractic care before delivery can help reduce labor time. Seniors come to get relief from basic arthritic conditions.”

Patient Lauren Cione, who was suffering from back pain during her pregnancy, says, “Dr. Mac made me feel so comfortable and adjusted me while I was pregnant. Participating in those advances enables the doctors at AllergyTampa to provide informed, expert care for their patients.

Dr. Lockey’s colleague, Dr. Seong Cho, shares his optimism about where medical science is heading. An otolaryngologist, or ear, nose & throat (ENT) specialist, Dr. Cho earned his M.D. degree from Kyung Hee University School of Medicine in Seoul, South Korea. He honed his allergy and immunology expertise at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, IL, before joining AllergyTampa.

Dr. Cho describes how research of biologics (a class of drugs that can be used to treat a variety of allergic conditions, including asthma, eczema and food allergies) is expanding. Biologics are now being used to help with other conditions and are altering approaches to treatment altogether. As an ENT, Dr. Cho has seen first-hand how these advances have major impacts — for example, for patients who have nasal polyps, which are non-cancerous growths inside the nose or sinuses that can last for several months and are more common with allergies, asthma and frequent infections. While small nasal polyps may not cause symptoms, larger ones can cause discomfort and complications that need to be addressed.

“In the past, nasal polyps and chronic sinusitis were surgical diseases,” Dr. Cho says. “But now, because of those medications, you don’t need to have

repeated surgeries. We figure out [which] molecule causes the problem and target it.” That precision means fewer side effects for patients and, as their use continues, injections may have the potential to treat a variety of other conditions. That marriage of research and patient care by the doctors at AllergyTampa has led to other life-changing treatments.

Dr. Mark Glaum describes how clinical research changed the landscape of how hereditary angioedema (HAE) is treated. HAE is an immune reaction which can be triggered by any number of potentially everyday occurrences, from anxiety and stress to colds and even minor injuries like a scratch. It can cause swelling of the face, intestinal tract and airway and, depending upon the location and severity, also can cause disfigurement or even potentially be life-threatening. HAE previously was only treated with supportive care, but that too has evolved, thanks to the clinical research involved in creating products that are now on the market.

Dr. Glaum describes how these new medications helped a specific patient that had been extremely limited by her HAE. “She had never gone on a cruise, or a vacation outside of a metropolitan area, because she was afraid that she would have an attack and need treatment,” Dr. Glaum shares. “But, now that she is controlled, with no flare-ups or swelling on the medication, she is free to go and enjoy life and vacations outside of the city.”

Dr. Glaum earned his M.D. degree from Hahnemann University School of Medicine (now Drexel University College of Medicine) in Philadelphia, and completed an allergy and clinical

immunology fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, also in Philadelphia. He says that when he came out of his training, there was only supportive care for hereditary angioedema.

Quality Of Life Improvements

Helping people with allergies and immunological diseases improve their overall quality of life is a priority for all of the doctors at AllergyTampa.

Dr. Amber Pepper says she was inspired to focus on the specialty in medical school, after meeting her husband, who has allergies and asthma, and seeing how those conditions affected him. That personal connection, along with the opportunity to shadow Dr. Dennis Ledford (who retired from this same practice), whom she calls an amazing mentor, at USF, made it an obvious choice. Dr. Pepper went on to earn her M.D. degree from USF in 2013 and completed her internal medicine residency and allergy & immunology fellowship at USF in 2016.

Dr. Pepper emphasizes the importance of identifying food allergies, which she says are distinct from food sensitivities and intolerances.

“The thing about food allergies, that is really important, is that if you are truly allergic, you can potentially have anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction that can cause patients to go into shock if not treated immediately), which can be life threatening,” she says, adding that, “there are now certain types of immunotherapies that we can do to try to increase the threshold of food allergies.”

Doctors Richard Lockey, Seong Cho, Mark Glaum, Amber Pepper and newest addition Dr. Emily Dzoba not only provide quality care for thousands of patients, they also participate in ground-breaking research and train students and medical professionals in the specialty.

A founding faculty member of the University of South Florida (USF) Morsani College of Medicine, Dr. Richard Lockey helped start USF’s Division of Allergy & Immunology in 1973, along with founding director Dr. Samuel Bukantz. More than 50 years later, USF’s Division of Allergy & Immunology has been recognized as a World Allergy Organization “Center of Excellence.”

Dr. Lockey earned his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from the Temple University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA, before becoming a Professor of Medicine at USF. He is a past president of the World Allergy Organization and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI).

Dr. Lockey first established his private practice in 1984 as “Academic Associates in Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.” At that time, Dr. Lockey humbly wondered if he would even have enough patients. Within just five years, he was already getting referrals for severe asthmatics. Now, 40 years later, AllergyTampa’s flagship practice is thriving and there is a second location in South Tampa, and Dr. Lockey is still actively involved, seeing patients two days a week in addition to his teaching and research at USF. Despite his 50+ years of experience, Dr. Lockey appears to be in no rush to retire. His love of the work is evident — and not surprising — since his interest in allergy and immunology was sparked at a young age. Going on rounds with his father, a family physician who later specialized in allergy and immunology, Dr. Lockey says he was greatly impacted by what he witnessed — especially people who were struggling to breathe deeply.

Haters Beware! Every year, after we’ve shown you the restaurants you — our readers — chose as your favorite restaurants in New Tampa & Wesley Chapel, I always tell you my favorites, which always differ from yours.

And, no matter what any of my haters want to believe, being an advertiser in my publications has nothing to do with whether or not I give a place a high rating. In fact, it’s actually often that part of the reason many of my favorite places end up advertising with us is because I have either told them — or put into a Nibbles & Bites item (or both) — how much I like their restaurant before they ever spend any money with us. For example, Falabella Family Bistro hasn’t advertised with us most of this year, but when I told owner Steve Falabella I had again named his place my #2 Favorite in Wesley Chapel, he said

he wanted to run an ad in the same issue.

It was tough choosing between Falabella and Zukku-San for my #1 Favorite in The Chap. I love Zukku-San’s entrées, but they’re somewhat limited. I based my choice on their incredible appetizers, which Jannah and I crave having at least every other week. Falabella has risen in my ratings primarily due to Steve’s weekly special entrées — even when I don’t make it in that week, I’ll still ask if they’re available on my next visit.

In New Tampa, Grill at Morris Bridge and Stonewood continue to run neck & neck every year and, as long as the quality doesn’t falter at either going forward, it’s going to take someone having better steaks, better fresh fish and other options for either of them to be unseated. And, although Las Palmas added beer and wine to their brick & mortar location, that’s not why I moved

There are always places left off my favorites (Top Shelf & Longhorn spring immediately to mind) that I enjoy nearly as much as I do those that make it — but I have to cut the list somewhere. After my third visit, my favorite dish is definitely the Hakka noodles with chicken (top photo), although everything else I’ve sampled on Inchin’s totally unique menu has been great, too — from super-crispy veggie spring rolls and spicy “toothpick” lamb (yes, served with toothpicks), the crispy chicken “momo” dumplings, the Mongolian beef, the chicken Szechwan peppercorn and, to my surprise, the crispy chili baby corn (right), which is what some restaurants mistakenly think their crispy cauliflower is like. I honestly can’t wait to go back and try other unique items.

26602 Wesley Chapel Blvd., Lutz (813) 973-9734 • Amici-Pizza.com Although Amici isn’t my #1 Favorite pizza place (see pg. 44), it’s always right up there for pizza (especially with sausage and pepperoni), but I continue to appreciate the Italian food served by the Mannino brothers more and more as time goes by.

The linguine with clams (top photo) is the dish that first got me enthused about Amici’s food other than pizza, and their chicken (bottom photo) and eggplant parmigiana are so tasty and tender they make me wish they had veal on the menu, too.

I’m also a big fan of the Mannino’s lasagna, pasta con pesto (with grilled chicken), spaghetti with garlic & oil and the pasta carbonara, even though I’m not usually a fan of the latter at most places. Amici’s just has the right amount of creaminess and bacon and the green olives are a nice touch, too.

Among their hot subs, I’m most cheesesteak and pizza steak hoagies partial to the meatball parmigiana, are pretty great, too. which I order with extra sauce. The

And, even though Pisco’s has a slightly different flavor than Lima’s fish ceviche (it usually comes with shrimp, so I have to order it without the shellfish; bottom), it’s still pretty delicious and I like that Pisco also adds crispy giant Incan corn to the usual non-crispy corn.

There’s also a fried fish ceviche entrée I haven’t tried yet The crisp fried wontons with homemade chicken are awesome, too, as are the super crunchy pork chicharrons.

My favorite dish is probably still the tallarin saltado (top photo), chicharron de pollo (chicken) and which I order with either chicken pescado (fish), and the fried rice or pork. Delish! The churrasco steak (chaufa) are great options, too. with home made fries and the crispy Neighborhood News

For breakfast, I always get the classic breakfast, with eggs over easy, crispy bacon and multigrain bread, rather than the sunny side up eggs and biscuit shown here, but I realized, after all of our visits to EggTown, I’ve never taken a great picture of my breakfast, I guess because I’m too busy eating it!

For lunch, I love the grilled chicken sandwich with bacon, but Jannah is partial to the chicken salad croissant (right).

For example, while my absolute favorite dish at Arroy Thai is the incredible crispy duck with ginger sauce, I had to “settle” for my “second”choice, the chicken with mixed veggies in garlic and black pepper sauce (top).

No settling for the bottom pic, however, as Arroy Thai’s fried rice with grilled white meat chicken is as good as it gets in New Tampa & Wesley Chapel.

Arroy Thai also has the second best gyoza in The Chap (to Zukku-San) and you can customize any entrée you like with your choice of beef, pork, shrimp or chicken. Try ‘em all, if you can!

Fortunately, Azteca does also have some pretty great Mexican cuisine, from quality chicken (or steak) fajitas (top photo) to a tasty charbroiled adobomarinated chicken breast (pollo asado al carbon), quality marinated lamb (borrego) and pork (osso bucco) shank options and even some great carne asada steak tacos (bottom photo). I also love the red beans shown here instead of the rehey, maybe that’s just me! Azteca has fried beans most dishes come with, but the right mix of food & atmosphere.

Grillsmith’s bar is a favorite of ours and it is rightfully well known for having an outstanding brunch, too.

We both named it as our 5th Favorite Restaurant in New Tampa this year. But, Fat Rabbit is more than just a sports bar with pub-style food only — including the crispiest wings in New Tampa (photo), especially when you order your favorite sauces on the side (instead of on the wings), like I do.

But, while Jannah & I also love the burgers and tater tots and she says the “fattened” shrimp are great, Fat Rabbit also has mojo mahi-mahi and short rib rice bowls, plus a great bar crowd enjoying super-premium liquor and craft beer.

As I told you last issue, our readers dropped The Grill at Morris Bridge from #2 last year to #6 this year. Yours truly, on the other hand, still has The Grill at #1 — again by the slimmest of margins over your favorite (Stonewood; see below) — in large part because of the two dishes shown here: the amazing bacon & parmesan-crusted grouper (top) and New Tampa’s only tomahawk ribeye steak (bottom), as well as the restaurant’s other steaks and even Italian options.

Jannah & I also love sitting at The Grill’s comfy bar and the new less-expensive bar menu (perfect for watching football or hockey games), including owner Frank Gouveia’s signature Massachusetts-style bar pizza, the new Nathan’s hot dogs and one of the best grilled chicken sandwiches in our area.

I really don’t understand why Frammi still isn’t registering with our readers the way it does with me. Maybe because it took over for the old Oakley’s Grille, which was a burger & sandwich place (and Frammi still shows up on Google as a “Sandwich Shop”), but I can get a burger anywhere. For authentic Italian pasta dishes, there’s really only Frammi and Via Italia — and both are excellent. So, if you still haven’t tried co-owner/ chef Luca Ammirati‘s vongole (pasta with clams, photo), penne alla vodka or eggplant parm, you’re really missing out. Please tell Luca I sent you!

I’ll admit that I really missed Kobé Japanese Steakhouse when it shut down. But, now that it’s reopened in its larger location (next to Chili’s), it’s nice for New Tampa to have a true Japanese steakhouse with real filet mignon (photo), as well as chicken, shrimp, lobster, scallops, tofu & even tuna on those dinner-&-a-show hibachi/teppanyaki tables. Kobe overstuffs you with clear onion soup, a great green salad & mixed veggies, plus lo mein noodles and fried rice. And, it has good sushi and apps like chicken gyoza, edamame & veggie spring rolls, plus a large full-liquor bar for those who don’t need to be entertained tableside.

Co-owner/chef Erik Ravenna is from Jersey, so he understands what New Yawkas like me want in an Italian restaurant/pizza place — big servings of hearty comfort food with zesty red sauces at fair prices. And, while I enjoy Johnny C’s pizza, I’m much more partial to Erik’s meatball appetizer, chicken (photo) or eggplant parm, penne alla vodka, ravioli pomodoro and homemade Momma’s lasagna. He also has a nice touch with other specialties like chicken piccata or Marsala.

And, if enough of you ask for it, maybe he’ll add some nice veal dishes someday! In the meantime, if you can eat shrimp, Johnny C’s also has New Tampa’s best selection of seafood pastas. Mangia!

I wasn’t a big fan of Palm Thai under its original owners, when it was mainly a takeout place, but the new owners not only turned it into a (still small) sit-down restaurant, they definitely gave it a menu upgrade (and major expansion). I still like Thai Ruby and Thai Lanna, but my opinion is that Palm Thai now has the best Thai-style fried rice (photo), pot sticker dumplings and veggie spring rolls of the three. I also really enjoy the crispy duck and chicken or pork with garlic & black pepper or ginger sauce (great veggies). I can’t wait to try the soft shell crab & fish filet options.

Dave’s Hot Chicken Is Now Open In The Shops At Wiregrass!

Congrats to brothers Ian and Adam Lieberman, who opened their third Dave’s Hot Chicken franchise (the other two are in Tampa on N. Dale Mabry Hwy. & E. Fowler Ave.) in The Shops at Wiregrass (at 28358 Willet Way, in the former location of Irish 31), as expected, on Nov. 21, before both Chicken Guy (see below) and Raising Cane’s (not expected to open until Jan. 2025). Dave’s is now serving its Nashville hot chicken to our hot-chicken-hungry community.

And, even though the Dave’s menu doesn’t offer much in the way of healthy options (although the kale slaw is very good), if you’ve been looking for another spicy chicken place — because it’s clear that our area can’t get enough of them — Dave’s is a great-looking restaurant chain with more than 250 locations.

Jannah, photographer Charmaine George and I sampled the new Dave’s chicken bites (above), which we ordered with no sauce and was our unanimous favorite, although the medium-spicy, one-tender slider sandwich (left) was definitely tasty. The fries and mac & cheese also were spot-on. We haven’t yet sampled the top-loaded shakes, but definitely plan to in the future.

3 Natives Cuts A Chamber Ribbon At The Shops At Wiregrass!

Congratulations to local franchise owner/operator Rick Orosco (top right photo), who celebrated the Grand Opening of the 3 Natives Açai & Juicery at 28211 Paseo Dr. (in the Shops at Wiregrass) on Dec. 5 with a North Tampa Bay Chamber (NTBC) ribbon-cutting event.

Orosco and his happy staff gave away a number of free samples of his popular açai bowls and fresh fruit smoothies and of course, the always-hungry Neighborhood News crew couldn’t resist ordering a couple of 3 Natives’ pressed wrap sandwiches (like the tasty Hawaiian shown below, center, with grilled chicken breast, spinach, purple cabbage, julienned carrots, pineapple and a zesty ginger dressing) and a full-sized Tequesta Dragon (named for Tequesta, FL, where 3 Natives was founded) açai bowl (bottom right), with dragon fruit, granola, fresh blueberries, raspberries and strawberries and chi and hemp seeds).

We also wolfed down the chicken Caesar and chicken salad wrap sandwiches.

On previous occasions, I’ve also enjoyed the Thai chicken and Cobb salad bowls and 3 Natives even offers a variety of avocado toast sandwiches, from a Mission Beach bagel with tuna salad and avocado to protein (with hard-boiled egg) and avocado toast on multigrain bread.

2 & 2 Restaurant — The ‘2 Minute’ Zephyrhills Tradition Expands To Wesley Chapel!

Unlike most of his already-large contingent of regular customers — many of whom attended the Grand Opening and Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting event on Dec. 12 — I first met owner Kruth (Kurt) Sombutmai and his beloved wife of 48 years, Sa-Ang (Suzie) a few weeks ago, as they were getting ready to open their 2&2 Restaurant on S.R. 54 in Wesley Chapel, less than a mile west of Morris Bridge Rd./Eiland Blvd.

Even so, it’s hard not to love this couple, who have been serving down-home food to the Zephyrhills community for 35 years and are now hoping to attract a lot of new customers in Wesley Chapel.

The ribbon-cutting event wasn’t your usual show-up-stay-for-a-bit-&-go-home affair. Most of the people in attendance, many of whom were, like Kurt, military veterans, stayed for at least a couple of hours to be regaled by stories of how Kurt moved from California, purchased the Hills Grocery on the Zephyrhills side of the corner of Morris Bridge Rd. and S.R. 54 and became one of that community’s best-known restaurateurs. Sure, they also hung around for the delicious free food buffet that followed the ceremony, but there wasn’t a single long-time customer of Kurt and Suzie’s who didn’t have a story they wanted to share about them. The event was indeed a beautiful tribute.

In addition to the Chamber folks, Zephyrhills Mayor Charlie Procter and former Pasco Clerk of the Court & Comptroller Paula O’Neil were in attendance for the ceremony and Paula said that Kurt and Suzie are among her best friends.

“Paula first announced she was running for the Clerk’s office at my restaurant,” Kurt recalled.

“She visited me in the hospital when I got sick a

few years ago, too.”

If you’re like me, you’re probably wondering where the name “2 & 2” came from. It’s basically a tribute to Kurt’s original restaurant, which often had lines wrapped around it for Kurt’s $1.99 “Eye Opener” breakfast and “all you can eat” fried fish special on Fridays. Aussie Grill On S.R. 56 Closes; Is Portillo’s Coming To Replace Rock & Brews?

Considering that long-established eateries like Red Lobster and TGI Fridays have shuttered many of their stores, it wasn’t a big shock that Bloomin’ Brands — which also is the parent company of Outback, Carrabba’s and Bonefish — made the decision to shutter most of its U.S. locations of Aussie Grill.

Among the stores that already are permanently closed is the Lutz/Wesley Chapel location on the north side of S.R. 56, across from the Tampa Premium Outlets, which closed its doors earlier this month. We had no news at our press time as to what might replace Aussie Grill, but we’ll keep you posted.

Portillo’s Is Coming...But Where?

The Grand Opening included a delicious buffet of free food, although our editor prefers 2&2’s bacon, ham & cheese omelet with crispy hash browns (left) & garlic pork chops (right). and roast beef club and “Suzie Spicy” chicken sandwich with melted cheddar, tortilla strips, avocado and sriracha mayo. There’s also a fresh salad bar.

I can vouch for the 1/4-lb. Kurtski burger and you can sub a short rib, brisket and chuck patty for only $1 more. Tasty fries, too. My favorite lunch/ dinner entrée so far is the grilled garlic pork chops, served with mashed potatoes (you also can choose baked potato or fries), plus your choice of soup or salad, ice cream and a soft drink, all for just $14.99.

I plan to try the slow-cooked pot roast, breaded veal cutlet and fried chicken dinners on future visits. There’s also seafood dinners (catfish or haddock, coconut shrimp, fried clams or grilled salmon) for just $15.99. And yes, the All You Can Eat fish fry is available on Fridays only, for just $13.99!

Meanwhile, Portillo’s — the Chicago-based hot dog and Italian beef chain — originally announced on Dec. 5 that it was opening “later this year” and even gave the address of the new Portillo’s as 26000 S.R. 56 and said that it would be a 6,250-sq.-ft. restaurant. That announcement was later changed to what is shown below, but the spark had been lit, as many midwesterners rejoiced, many locals who had tried but weren’t overjoyed shrugged their shoulders and everyone else tried to figure out how Portillo’s could open a huge sit-down restaurant in just a few weeks time, in a location that already has a huge (actually closer to 8,000 sq. ft.) sit-down restaurant — as that address is where the Rock & Brews on the south side of S.R. 56, in front of the outlet mall,

currently sits and is still open (and is still advertising in these pages; see pg. 53).

As soon as I saw the original announcement, I headed to the nearest Portillo’s location — on E. Fowler Ave. in Tampa — to ask what the management of that location knew about the new store, but I was referred to corporate, which has not yet responded to my very detailed email, even though the revised press release at Portillos.com shown below deleted the planned address and timeframe in the original (Note-26000 S.R. 56 is still listed as the Lutz address when you click on the “Locations” button on the site).

Of course, I also took the time to sample my first Portillo’s Italian beef sandwich, with added mozzarella cheese and extra Italian gravy/au jus on the side, and I’ll admit it was pretty tasty.

Good crinkle cut fries, too.

Our contact at Rock & Brews didn’t get back to us with an answer as to whether or not that location was closing, but we’ll keep you posted. — GN

Box Of Cubans Now Open In Former New Tampa Mochinut Location!

In our Oct. 29 issue, we told you that Box of Cubans restaurant was getting ready to open in the space previously occupied by Mochinut’s New Tampa location at 17512 Doña Michelle Dr., off Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., just north of the BBD exit off I-75 in the area known as Highwoods Preserve.

Well, owners Marcos and Oni Silverio and their son, Marcos Jr. (MJ) have now opened their second Box of Cubans location (the other is in Riverview) and everything we’ve sampled so far has been pretty great.

In addition to tasty pressed Cuban sandwiches (bottom left photo), Box of Cubans also offers 14 different varieties of empanadas — from beef & cheese and chicken to banana nutella and guava & cream cheese. My current favorite sandwich is the “pan con bistec,” with mojo-marinated Palomillo steak, Swiss cheese, sautéed onions, crispy potato straws, mayo and a house cilantro sauce (below right). There also are Cuban rice bowls with black or red beans and your choice of protein, garlic toast and sweet plantains that I haven’t sampled yet, although I did also enjoy Box of Cubans’ black beans and rice.

Box of Cubans also serves a variety of breakfast items, even though it doesn’t open until 11 a.m. during the week and 10 a.m. on Saturday & Sunday. “We sell our breakfast all day,” Marcos told me. “And we already have customers coming in at 6 p.m. on a Tuesday ordering our breakfast sandwiches.”

The bacon, egg & cheese on pressed Cuban bread is delicious and I also enjoyed the ham, egg & cheese empanada. But, my surprise favorite breakfast item is the torrejas, or Cuban-style French toast (top photo), which is topped with powdered sugar and served with both breakfast syrup and a warm strawberry dipping sauce. Incréible! The café con leché is excellent, too, and other hot and cold coffee drinks are available.
