New Tampa Rotary To Present 2017 ‘Taste’ At Florida Hospital Center Ice! By Gary Nager I will admit that I was crazy excited to learn that the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC) — our exclusive webcast partner for WCNT-tv (see pages 3 & 48) — was getting ready to sign off on having the New Tampa Rotary Club (which meets Fridays for breakfast at Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club) put on the next Taste of New Tampa. Sadly, I thought that official announcement was coming a few months ago...and then, a few weeks ago. Well, on Sept. 14, it became official. There will be a 21st Taste of New Tampa — and Wesley Chapel — on Saturday, March 18, 2017! But somehow, the bigger news for all of us who plan to dive headfirst into bringing back one of our area’s most popular single-day events than the fact that there finally will be another Taste is the location for the event — Florida Hospital Center Ice (FHCI)! FHCI co-owner/developer Gordie Zimmerman may not have been able to be on-hand for the signing ceremony between the WCCC and the New Tampa Rotary, but Zimmerman stepped up to the plate in a big way by agreeing to bring the event primarily back indoors for the first time since the first Taste back in 1994 (when it was held in and outside of Hunter’s Green Country Club), instead of outside in what has too often been either sweltering heat or sideways-falling, driving rain. The signing ceremony, held at the Chamber office in The Grove at Wesley Chapel, featured New Tampa Rotary president Brice Wolford and WCCC Board chair Tracy Clouser signing off on a document that took a little while to finalize, but will definitely prove to be worth the wait for

Wesley Chapel Jazz Festival Moves To Avalon Park West Oct. 15! By John C. Cotey The 3rd Annual Wesley Chapel Fall Jazz Festival is coming back to our area, but not to its usual locale. After two years at the Wesley Chapel District Park on Boyette Rd., the 2016 Festival will be hosted on Saturday, October 15, noon-8 p.m., by the Avalon Park West (APW) community off S.R. 54. Located at 32659 Coldwater Creek Lp. in Wesley Chapel, Avalon Park West has held a number of successful open-to-the-pubic events, including its Fourth of July celebration, which drew a big crowd estimated at more than 2,000 people. The Wesley Chapel Fall Jazz Festival, which is free to attend, should be another large gathering at the new development. “The last one, we had like 5,000 people, so we’re back by popular demand,’’ says Tim Hancock, the president of Jazz Tyme Productions, which is organizing the event. A lacrosse tournament may have bumped the festival from the District Park,

but it’s all good, Hancock says, noting that the jazz festival will be combined with APW’s own Fall Festival (see ad on pg. 19). “They have been trying to get me to bring it over there (to Avalon Park West) for the longest,’’ he says. Hancock also says that this year’s festival will have bounce houses, face painting, a pumpkin patch and dozens of food vendors. But, the main draw will be the music, which will be highlighted by nationally-known smooth jazz artist Nathan Mitchell — who released his debut album “For All Eternity” in 2013 — and Tampa-based saxophonist Marlon Boone, who also plays with his R&B band City Groove. “It’s going to be awesome,’’ Hancock says. “It will be live and smooth. This ain’t no backyard BBQ.” Hancock is expecting a crowd of 3,0004,000 this time around. Both the Neighborhood News & WCNT-tv will be on-site, too! For more information, visit AvalonParkWest.com or JazzTymeProductions. com, or call 609-2531.

Smooth jazz recording artist Nathan Mitchell will be the headliner at this year’s Wesley Chapel Jazz Festival.

Hillary Trounces Trump In 1st Debate, But I Can’t Vote For Either One An editorial by Gary Nager So, like 80 million or so other Americans, I watched every second of the first presidential debate between Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and I will admit that the former First Lady, U.S. Senator from New York and Secretary of State absolutely wiped the floor with the businessman/real estate developer/reality TV star who somehow fooled Republican voters into thinking that he would be a better choice than the dozen or so much more qualified GOP candidates he ended up besting during the primary process. And, as a native Lawn Guylander, it was hard to not see the irony of two candidates I truly dislike, each with ties to New York, duke it out at Hofstra University, which is 15 minutes from where I grew up. Does anyone...even the staunchest Republican supporters...still believe that the unprepared, unimpressive “La Donald” was the best choice for the GOP to try to take back the White House after eight years under President Obama? Seriously? Trump didn’t just lose the debate; he embarrassed himself and his supporters. Registered Republicans across the country let out a collective “uh-oh” as the billionaire stumbled, bumbled and sniffed (what was that anyway? a cold? allergies?) his way to the worst on-stage performance by a Republican since Sarah Palin. Trump railed on about the number of murders in Chicago, but seemingly only because it’s Pres. Obama’s hometown, not because he had some important (or valid) point to make. He gave himself credit for changing his mind about the president’s birth certificate not being real, but never explained why he did

So, obviously, I can’t vote for Trump — or recommend that anyone else should either. Even so, I also can’t throw my support behind Clinton, as I twice did Obama. A few weeks prior to the debate, I heard the former Secretary of State take credit for being in the “war room” as Pres. Obama and our top military officials came up with the plan to ultimately “take out” Osama bin Laden, but where was the First Lady when her husband was President? MeetRepublican candidate Donald Trump was ing multiple times with the Al Qaeda leader trounced in the first Presidential Debate by after he had made his first (and unsuccessful) Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, but attempt to blow up the World Trade Center? Did we even once hear Hillary say, during our editor says he can’t vote for either of them. either of her Presidential campaigns, that, “We three+ years after that certificate was produced. should’ve taken out that SOB when Bill had When Trump jabbed lightly at Clinton the chance” all those years ago? about her 33,000 deleted emails, she countered No. Instead, we have been (since the with a smashing left hook to the jaw about why 1990s) — and continue to be — told about he won’t disclose his taxes. “Maybe he’s not the “stand by my man” relationship between as charitable...or as profitable...as he’d like us to think,” Hillary said to the American people. “But mainly, I think it’ll show that he hasn’t paid any federal income tax for years.” “That just makes me smart,” the precocious billionaire sniffed back. Smart? OK, maybe he is. But, appealing to undecided middle and lower class American voters who somehow have to pay thousands of dollars a year to Uncle Sam while only making thousands themselves? I don’t think so. As I mentioned in my editorial after the first debate, I’m a registered Republican who could have happily supported Jeb Bush, John Kasich, Chris Christie, Carly Fiorina, Ben Carson or Marco Rubio (I voted for Rubio in the primary, even though I don’t agree with all of his Tea Party positions), saying that I could get behind almost anyone other than Trump. The only other major candidate who gave me similar pause was the second-place Republican Ted Cruz, who would attempt to make Christianity our national religion, despite our country’s diverse population. Trump may have sold GOP voters on the “fact” that he was the only non-politician in the field — just as he sold unsuspecting students on the bogus Trump University and unsuspecting condo buyers in New York, Tampa and other locations on buildings with his name on them that he ultimately walked away from without completing — but his “non-politically-correct” responses did nothing throughout the campaign but convince me he was the wrong choice, even as he built up his treasure trove of delegates.

Hillary and her husband, who surely didn’t begin and end his process of wooing White House interns with Monica Lewinsky. I don’t believe the Clintons are in any way, shape or form a loving couple. I say Hillary has stuck with her hubby only because she feared that she would never become president herself if she divorced him, despite his blatant philandering. Hillary claims to be fighting for you and me, but I honestly believe neither candidate cares as much about us as they do themselves. Yes, Clinton dominated Trump in Round One. It was so bad that if it were a prize fight, it would have been stopped early, with Trump sniffing blood back into his nose instead of sniffling before and after every time he spoke. Even so, I will still be at the polls on Nov. 8, voting for other offices. I just can’t see myself casting a ballot for either of these two, even though one of them has to win. Heavy sigh.

No One Hurt In Tampa Palms Wreck, But Residents Fear What Could Have Been By John C. Cotey Ryan Hamaker was returning to his home in Buckingham at Tampa Palms when he caught site of a number of cars outside the entrance into his development. The car that really caught his attention, however, was the 2015 metallic gold Maserati Ghibli planted front-first into the brick wall that once welcomed visitors to Buckingham. “I was in complete shock,’’ said Hamaker, who is also the Home Owner’s Association president at Buckingham. According to the Tampa Police Department, Kensington at Tampa Palms resident Mohammed Ahmed Salti was traveling west on Tampa Palms Blvd. when he failed to notice a red pick-up truck with a trailer carting three large drums that was pulling out of Buckingham and turning east on Sept. 17. Surveillance video, viewed by the Neighborhood News, doesn’t appear to show Salti making any attempt to veer out of the way, but the Maserati clipped the back passenger’s side of the trailer and was redirected into a brick wall on the west side of the entrance. “We had a contractor coming out of the gate,” Hamaker said. “In his own version (of the story), he saw the car and he had plenty of time to pull out, he just didn’t realize the guy was just flying.” No one was injured in the crash. But, some Buckingham residents have been left wondering what might have happened. They shudder to consider that the Maserati, which is valued at roughly $80,000-$90,000, flew through a corner that serves as a school bus stop for Liberty Middle School and is heavily populated on weekday mornings. “That’s the first thing I thought,’’ said Jennifer Evans, whose 11- and 13-year-old sons wait on that corner in the mornings for the bus. “Someone could have gotten killed. It’s crazy.” Evans was returning home from errands when she saw police cars. “I was a little curious why there was a gold car decorating our signage,’’ she said. Since the brakes were never applied before the car crashed, if the wall hadn’t been there, it is likely the Maserati would have ended up in the backyard, and maybe the bedroom, of its residents, said a home-

owner named Kulendrian, who asked us to not use his last name. “I heard a big noise,” he said. “I didn’t really know what happened. It was right behind my bedroom. Without the tree and landscape, my property would have been hit.” Bricks did fly into the side of his house and also damaged his pool cage. Oftentimes, Kulendrian’s mother-in-law would be tending to plants in that area. “Thank God that nobody was there,’’ he said. Kulendrian says he and his wife often hear the sounds of cars screaming down Tampa Palms Blvd., and sometimes rush to

their upstairs window to catch a glimpse of who it is. “You just hear the zoom,’’ he says. Police say Salti was traveling the posted speed limit of 40 mph when he struck the trailer, although it is impossible to tell his exact speed. Those who have viewed the surveillance video say it appears he was traveling faster. The wall was destroyed. Almost two weeks after the accident, Hamaker says Salti’s car insurance company, Progressive, is refusing to pay to rebuild it. Hamaker estimates the wall damage at $45,000. It is composed of real brick, not stucco or veneer. Some of those brick piec-

es hit the house behind the wall, and one large chunk of brick came to rest on the hood of the Maserati and was too heavy to move off without mechanical assistance. He said all Tampa Palms properties have special computer-engraved monument signs and that the engraving alone costs more than $13,000. Hamaker said there also was damage done to the lights, as the Maserati hit the external power supply, and busted the city water main that is used for the landscaping. “There was a water spout when we moved the car,’’ Hamaker said. He was also frustrated because Buckingham HOA just had the entire front of the entrance re-landscaped, at a cost of $8,000, two days before the Maserati crashed over it. Speeding cars ripping through Tampa Palms Blvd., especially near Buckingham and Tuscany, is a growing concern. Tampa Palms Blvd. is a collector road, so no speed bumps, stop signs or lights are permitted. The road is a long, curved two-lane stretch of semi-clear sailing that Hamaker and other residents complain is a popular choice for some of the souped-up cars in the area. “We definitely have a problem with speeders,’’ Hamaker said. “They all tend to be these exotic cars around Tampa Palms. Most concerning is that Tampa Palms is loaded with kids. In fact, on Saturdays and Sundays, it is not uncommon for my wife and our two kids to be out there cycling. And, the fact that this was right over a school bus stop is even scarier.” Evans said there is a huge walking path along Tampa Palms Blvd., and on most days, kids are biking, joggers are running and families are walking their dogs on the path. “The driver of that car was so unimaginably lucky that there was no one walking through or parked there,’’ Evans said. “It could have been a huge disaster.” Hamaker says that the HOA at Buckingham has hired off duty police officers twice a month the past few years to monitor the speeds in his community, and tickets have been issued in the past. While that may annoy some people, Hamaker said the sight of the metallic gold Maserati Ghibli slammed into a brick wall just a few feet from a school bus stop is a stark reminder of what could have been. “It’s got to stop,’’ he said.

Beach House Assisted Living Facility Unveiled At WCCC Economic Briefing By John C. Cotey The assisted living landscape in the Wesley Chapel and New Tampa area promises to be more crowded by the end of next year, as two new facilities are scheduled to open, including the Beach House at Wiregrass Ranch in Wesley Chapel. Allan R. Brown of the Dallas, TX-based Prevarian Companies, unveiled his company’s third Beach House Assisted Living & Memory Care community — there also are locations in Jacksonville and Naples — at the Sept. 22 Economic Development Briefing put on by the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC) at Pebble Creek Golf Club. Located on S.R. 56 less than a mile east of the Shops at Wiregrass mall, the Beach House will be the largest assisted living facility in Wesley Chapel when it opens, and will have approximately 50 employees. Brown says the community will feature 67 assisted living apartments in studio and one- and two-bedroom set-ups for residents who need assistance with 1-2 activities each day, as well as 33 private memory care residences for residents suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Lifecare Services, which serves more than 33,000 older adults nationwide, will serve as the operator of the Beach House. “(We) will be applying for an extended congregate care license, which allows us to do more in an assisted living setting,’’ Brown said. There will be a nurse on staff and people to help with medications, but no medical facility.

Brown says the community also will have a secure, enclosed courtyard, multiple dining venues, a wellness center and even a bar. The name Beach House is meant to evoke old memories of renting a beach house for the summer. “Many of the elderly we serve have that in their family histories,” he says. “It’s a really positive memory.” The newest entry into our area’s expanding assisted living market is expected to begin construction any day now, and hopes to sign up its first residents for a December 2017 opening. “It’s going to be a beautiful community and a great complement to the other

Cory Lake Isles Resident Yogi Goswami Inducted Into FL Inventors Hall of Fame By Celeste McLaughlin Thomas Edison. Henry Ford. Yogi Goswami. These three are among the 20 inventors who have been inducted into the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame since its inception in 2013. Only one, though, lives in New Tampa. Yogi Goswami, Ph.D., P.E. (Professor Emeritus), is a University of South Florida Distinguished Professor and director of the university’s Clean Energy Research Center. The Cory Lake Isles resident is one of seven inventors honored at an induction ceremony and gala at the Inventors Hall on the USF Tampa Campus on September 16. Dr. Goswami has lived in New Tampa with his wife Lovely for 10 years, since he left his position as director of the University of Florida’s Solar Energy Research Lab in Gainesville. He came to USF because he says it gave him, “more opportunities for doing groundbreaking research.” For example, Dr. Goswami says, “To establish a new research lab, you need space to do that, and USF was able to give me that space. Because the university is newer, it is open to a lot of things that may be harder to do at a (more) well-established university.” The Florida Inventors Hall of Fame chose Dr. Goswami for his work in solar energy and indoor air quality. “I have 18 patents,” he says. “Some are related to solar energy, some to energy storage, and six are related to indoor air quality and the technology to disinfect and clean air.” He says the key to being chosen for this honor is for those patents to be in use and helping people. “My inventions are being used around the world,” Dr. Goswami says, “especially my invention to disinfect When his now-grown son, Dilip, was much younger and suffering from allergies and asthma, Dr. Goswami began to look for a way to help him. He used his expertise to develop the technology that actually destroys the

8

pollutants in the air that were making his son sick. “The air inside homes and offices has a lot of pollutants, not just bacteria, viruses and mold,” says Dr. Goswami, “but also volatile organic chemicals that come from paints and other materials we use inside our buildings. Those things make us sick. Before air conditioning was so widely available, we used to have open windows so we would have fresh air. Now, these pollutants concentrate inside. This technology is the first on the market that destroys them.” Dr. Goswami and Dilip co-founded Molekule, the company that is now producing an indoor air purifier that uses this technology. The first two production runs of the device, also called Molekule, have completely sold out, and the company currently has a waiting list for the next batch of air purifiers, which are expected to be available for sale in November. He says many of his other inventions are related to making solar energy conversion more efficient, to bring the cost down. “Costs have come down quite a bit over the last few decades in solar energy,” says Dr. Goswami. “We can make it more efficient and bring the cost down even further in the future.” He also has inventions related to storing energy more effectively, since solar energy is “intermittent,” meaning it’s not available at night or when it’s cloudy. His work in this area is directed toward largescale power plants that produce solar energy. “The Florida Inventors Hall of Fame is very prestigious,” says Dr. Goswami. “I feel honored to be inducted, especially seeing the people who were inducted before me, such as Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and Dr. Robert Cade, the inventor of Gatorade.” The Florida Inventors Hall of Fame is located in the USF Research Park at 3702 Spectrum Blvd., Dr. Yogi Goswami, pictured here with his wife Lovely, was inducted into Suite 165, and is online at FloridaInvents.org. the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame on the USF Tampa campus at an For more information about the Molekule air purifier, visit Molekule.com. Wiregrass Mall Macy’s To Close?; Plus, North Tampa Behavioral Health Expands By John C. Cotey

Is the Macy’s at the Shops at Wiregrass mall off S.R. 56 on the chopping block? The department store chain announced in August that it will be closing 100 stores by next year, and the news doesn’t seem to be good for the Macy’s location in Wiregrass. Morningstar Credit Ratings has identified 28 Macy’s locations with sales below the company’s national average (for 2014, the most recent year information was available), putting the stores at a higher risk of being one of the 100 to be shuttered. The Wiregrass Macy’s is No. 8 on that list. According to the report, Macy’s reported $118 in sales per sq. ft. The average for Macy’s overall in 2014 was $169 per sq. ft. The Macy’s at Cottonwood Mall in Albuquerque, NM, is at the highest risk of closure, with only $76 in sales per square foot. The 28th, or last store on Morningstar’s list, is Marrimack Premium Outlets in New Hampshire, with $166 in sales per sq. ft. The only other Macy’s on the list of 28 underperforming stores that is located in Florida is at the Lakeland Square Mall on U.S. Hwy. 98 in Lakeland. Macy’s, which currently has 728 total stores nationwide, is one of the anchors — the “big name” stores that are generally considered paramount to a mall’s success — at the Shops at Wiregrass. Losing an anchor can have a big impact on a mall’s numbers, although it’s not usually a fatal effect. The Morningstar report states, “How-

County Down To Two Choices To Build, Run Sports Complex By John C. Cotey

Four companies got into the game of trying to earn a chance to build and operate a new indoor sports facility in the Wiregrass Ranch Development of Regional Impact (DRI), but only two will be allowed to keep playing, after a Pasco County committee narrowed the field last week. Sports Facilities Management (SFM) and RADDSPORTS, a pair of Tampa Baybased properties, are still alive and get the opportunity to present their proposals to a county evaluation committee September 30 at the West Pasco Government Center in New Port Richey. Whoever is recommended at that meeting will go before the Pasco Board of County Commissioners (BCC) for final approval. The complex will be built on 120 acres of land donated to the county by the Porter family, the owners and developers of Wiregrass Ranch. The county also previously agreed to contribute $8.5 million to the design and construction of the facility from money raised through its tourism development tax. The two companies selected by the county committee — Parks, Recreation & Natural Resources department director Kelley Boree, facilities management director Ed Breitenbach, tourism manager Ed Caum, strategic policy administrator Richard Gehring and assistant county administrators Heather Grimes and Cathy Pearson — both have prior experience in the bustling sports tourism field. Sports Facilities Management runs the successful Rocky Top Sports World in Gatlinburg, TN, which is often cited as the perfect example of what the county envisions for the Wiregrass Ranch project, which SFM refers to as the “Pasco County Sportsplex.” It also manages the Myrtle Beach Sports Center in South Carolina, the Legends Sports Complex in The Woodlands, TX, and Round Rock Sports Complex in Round Rock, TX. According to the Sports Facilities Planning Guide, SFM manages five of the top nine venues in the country. Headquartered in Clearwater, SFM is proposing a $16.5-million project for Wiregrass, with a 92,000-sq.-ft. building housing six full-size basketball courts, or 12 volleyball courts, based on the configuration. There will be a rollout synthetic turf, which can accommodate 4-6 turf fields depending upon the sport and configuration.

12

The facility also will have locker rooms, an adventure area for multiple nonsports events, party and office areas and a mezzanine court area, along with food service. A c c o r d ing to SFM, the new sports facility would generate nearly 30,000 room nights in Year One from non-local users, with that number increasing to more than 40,000 by the fifth A rendering of the indoor sports facility proposed by RADDSPORTS , likely to part of its presentation to Pasco County in October. year, equating to real estate development and management nearly $4 million in direct economic impact jects 36 events per nine-month season. “The economic impact of the project firm that did not make the cut, had no interto Pasco County its initial year and $24 milwill easily exceed a million dollars per year est in operating the facilities, just merely delion total over the first five years. The cost of the hotel would be $15 million, but since a hotel wasn’t listed in the request for proposal (RFP) it would have to be negotiated and the county is looking into the deed restrictions on the property. Rep. Harrison’s Support Of Avis Harrison A Headscratcher For Jim Davison By John C. Cotey When District 63 State Rep. Shawn Harrison, a Republican who is running for reelection on Nov. 8, stood before a crowd at a candidate fair sponsored by the North Hillsborough Republican Club at Carrollwood Country Club on Sept. 13 and urged them to help put a Republican on the Tampa City Council for the first time since he had served on the council, Jim Davison, M.D., couldn’t help but smile. Dr. Davison, a longtime Hunter’s Green resident and a friend of Harrison’s, had just spoken a few minutes before to the same crowd, and he viewed Harrison’s comments as something of an unofficial endorsement of his candidacy in the District 7 race. But, it wasn’t. The next day, Harrison sent out Facebook invitations for a fund raiser he hosted at his home on Sept. 22 for one of Davison’s opponents – Arbor Greene resident Avis Harrison, a former elementary school teacher and registered independent who proudly touts her lack of experience and is no relation to Shawn. “She has been a family friend for several years, and I think she would be an excellent member of the City Council,’’ Harrison said. Shawn had already co-hosted a fund raiser for Avis Harrison on Sept. 8 at the Avila home of former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden, and raised more than $8,000. But, Davison was still surprised, considering what he heard at the candidate fair. Dana Young, who represents Florida’s 60th District and is the Florida House majority leader, spoke right after Davison and also delivered glowing remarks. While the City

Council race is non-partisan, it is no secret that Davison is a registered Republican and the only one so registered in a field that includes Luis Viera, Gene Siudut, Cyril Spiro, Ph.D., Orlando Gudes and Avis Harrison. from Democrats in his race vs. Montelione. “If you are a good candidate, party identification should play less of a role,’’ Harrison said. “I want the best person in that seat for New Tampa.” MONEY GAME: The Gruden fund raiser for Avis Harrison helped launch her from the bottom of the fund raising race to near the top. She raised $10,250 for the Sept. 3-16 filing period, putting her at $20,188.34 overall, right behind Viera and Spiro. Viera, a Hunter’s Green resident and lawyer with Ogden & Sullivan, P.A., raised $6,195 during the most recent filing period, and now has $58,954 overall, which keeps him comfortably ahead of the rest of the field. Dr. Spiro has raised $26,217.83 overall, the field’s second-largest fund-raising haul. Siudut, an editor with La Gaceta, has raised $18,630, while Gudes, a former Tampa Police officer, is at $15,766.10. Davison, who got into the race a little later, is at $7,395.30. ENDORSEMENTS: Davison has offset his low fund-raising numbers by picking up some endorsements he says are as big as anyone else’s. Davison received an endorsement from former Tampa City Council member Joseph Caetano, and another from Gus Bilirakis, the U.S. Representative for Florida’s 12th congressional district. Caetano recently received 10,681 votes in his unsuccessful bid for the Hillsborough County School Board. Viera picked up an endorsement from the Tampa Bay Builders Association last week, which is generally considered an important “get” for candidates.

Human Trafficking Walk At Wiregrass Oct. 15

Rachel Martinez (far right) and other volunteers participate in last year’s A21 Walk For Freedom.

The average age of a victim of human trafficking is just 12 years old. Only 1-2 percent of victims are ever rescued. And, there are an estimated 27 million people currently in bondage worldwide. These shocking statistics are according to A21, an organization that gets its name from its mission, which is, “Abolishing injustice in the 21st century.” A group of local volunteers is supporting this organization and its mission by participating in A21’s annual “Walk For Freedom” with an event in Wesley Chapel on Saturday, October 15, 9 a.m., beginning at the Shops at Wiregrass mall. “A lot of people aren’t aware that human trafficking is in our own neighborhoods and communities,” says event organizer Rachel Martinez. “We are hosting this walk to bring awareness to this issue.” Rachel is a Wesley Chapel resident who participated in the walk last year, along with her family and about 100 others. She’s hoping that this year, even more will participate, so that many people throughout our community will see the line of walkers, dressed in black, as silent ambassadors for a cause they want others to care about, too. “This year, the sidewalks are complete, so we can walk west along S.R. 56,” Rachel says. “We want people to see us in our shirts as we walk all the way to I-75.” She also says that local churches have supported the walk by paying for necessary

permits, and fund-raising efforts cover costs for items such as bottled water for the walkers. There’s no cost for participants to attend, although they are encouraged to purchase an official A21 Walk For Freedom T-shirt from the website A21.org. Rachel became interested in supporting the mission of A21 when she heard the founder of the organization, Christine Caine, speak at an event at her church. Caine is a Bible teacher, activist and evangelist from Hillsong Church, an Australian megachurch. “Her story and her passion really hit home for me,” says Rachel, who adds that in her job handling statewide permitting for a construction company, she’s often on websites for various municipalities, and she’s struck by how often those local governments have task forces and resources dedicated to fighting human trafficking. The National Human Trafficking Resource Center ranked Florida third among all states in the U.S. in the number of calls received by the center’s human trafficking hotline in 2015, as it has in past years, and many of those calls were from the Tampa Bay area. “It’s big, big money, but maybe by bringing awareness to this issue, we can nip it in the bud,” Rachel says. “Maybe kids will learn something that will keep them safe from an unfortunate situation.” To register to participate in the walk, visit A21.org/WesleyChapel or email FL4Freedom@hotmail.com. — CM

Noon Rotary’s Fisher House Golf Oct. 28! Whether you’re a golfer or just someone who likes to support a great cause, the New Tampa Noon Rotary — which meets Wednesdays at noon at Pebble Creek Golf Club — will host the 10th annual Fisher House Golf Classic on Friday, October 28, also at PCGC. Although the tournament has had other names, it has always supported the Fisher House, the 20-bed residence where the families of the wounded service men and women being treated at the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital can stay for free. Noon Rotary president Valerie Casey and the club have raised more than $200,000 during the previous nine years of the event, including more than $30,000 last year alone. “And, every penny we raise is donated directly to the Fisher House,” says Casey, who is now serving her second year as the Noon Rotary president. and is from a military family herself. “Our club supports all first responders with our events, but the Fisher House is so important to the families of these wounded veterans that we, as a Neighborhood News

club, always want to support it. Tampa Fisher House director Paula Welenc always shows up at the event itself — which will have lunch served at 11:30 a.m. and a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. — and she always expresses her appreciation for the efforts of Casey and her fellow Rotarians. “We certainly couldn’t have housed more than 850 family members of our wounded soldiers at the Tampa Fisher House without all of you supporting events like this one,” Welenc said after last year’s Fisher House Classic. The suggested donation to play in the 2017 tourney is $125 per golfer and Casey and her crew are hoping for a full field of golfers again this year. Among this year’s major sponsors are Pepin Distributing, PaverWorks, the Stay in Step Recovery Center and Patriot Divers; plus Delta Air Lines, Harder Law, AT&T, Iberia Air Lines, Charles Schwab, Sun Coatings and Vital Network Services. New Tampa’s Sweet Party Store Is Your Halloween Headquarters! By John C. Cotey If you’re trying to judge party stores, you are probably going to start with, well, the party. Holding a luau? Sweet Party has you covered. Mardi Gras? Bridal Shower? Gasparilla? Check, check and check. And the list goes on and on. “We are filling so many themes that you can’t find elsewhere,’’ says Maher Alagal, who owns the largest party store in the New Tampa and Wesley Chapel area with his wife, Leslie. Sweet Party, located in the Trout Creek Commons plaza, just off Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. and right behind the Bay Breeze Castrol Lube Express and Burger 21, has been open since May, and seems to be finding its footing in the area as a one-stop shop for party planners. You can find most any theme (say, LEGOs, princesses or ninjas) that can include streamers, cups and napkins. Candy and prizes have their own aisles at Sweet Party, along with balloons, confetti and gift bags. “We have been thinking about doing this for 3-4 years,’’ says Leslie, who has lived in Tampa since 1992. “There was no large party store to provide for the people of New Tampa and Wesley Chapel, so we jumped in and did it.” The 7,000-sq.-ft. party place seems to have everything, and if they don’t, Maher says they can find it for you. Case in point: one customer was looking for party cups and napkins in the hard-to-find color of robin’s egg blue. Now, right near a seemingly end-

And, Maher and Leslie offer a 10-percent discount to military and first responders, as well as various other community members. Mention that you read this article, or visited his Facebook page, and he’ll give you 10-percent off, too. “This place is incredible,” wrote Tampa’s Amanda Gill on Sweet Party’s Facebook page. “Just went to browse for my son’s upcoming party and this place has everything…. together, this place has it! And I even heard him telling another customer if there is something they don’t have, let them know and they’ll try and get it! But I’m telling you, they have EVERYTHING!”

Making Halloween Costume Shopping Less Scary The store is now prepped for Halloween as well, with dressing areas in the back. On the back wall are more than 400 pictures of the Halloween costumes the store has in stock, ranging from Ninja Turtles and The Avengers for kids, to a host of costumes for adults as well. with feather boas of almost every color, plus other costume accessories, such as tights, wigs and masks. Thanks to Sweet Party, you can go to your Halloween party as a pirate, a nurse or a 1970s rock star. If you really want to be obscure, hurry in and snatch that Richard Simmons costume off the hook. “We expect Halloween to be one of our biggest days,’’ Leslie says. While themed birthday parties are the most common, another popular party theme these days are the “gender reveal” gettogethers, says Leslie. One gender reveal party Leslie was planning for two weeks ago involved a 36inch balloon (Smart Party is the only place around where you can find latex balloons that large) that she was going to be filling with pink streamers and confetti before inflating. At the big reveal, the balloon would be popped and the secret would be out of the bag…or balloon, as it were. “Gender reveal parties are a big thing today, much bigger than when (our generation) was having babies,’’ Leslie says. “We’ve had people bring in their containers with the unopened envelope in it, because they don’t want to know (until the reveal) either.” Behind the front counter of the store is a wall of inflated mylar balloons for every occasion. Mobley Homes — A 40-Year Tampa Bay Tradition Now Building In K-Bar Ranch! By Celeste McLaughlin Celebrating its 40th year of building homes in the Tampa Bay area, Mobley Homes is a private company that touts its customer-first philosophy and devotion to excellence as the cornerstones of its business. Since 1976, Mobley Homes has been building homes for families in and around Tampa. In New Tampa, the company previously has built 1,000 homes in West Meadows and 400 in Tampa Palms, and has been building in K-Bar Ranch since 2007. Renée Riordan has worked as a new home specialist for Mobley for 15 years. The company, “feels like a family,” she says. “Our company is family-owned and run,” says Renée. “Everyone has been with the company a long time. Once you purchase a home with us, you become our family, too.” She says Mobley Homes works closely with its buyers to customize each home exactly the way a homeowner wants, so they will love their home for many years to come. “Buyers in these higher-end homes want flexibility, and that’s what we offer,” says Renée. “We can move walls, make bigger closets, add a rain shower or a sauna, add a fireplace, or redesign a kitchen. As long as you start with one of our base plans and it fits on the lot, we can do it.” Renée says that she and the other new home specialists – Neisha Roberts and owner Tim Mobley’s daughter Maureen Mobley Groom – at Mobley Homes enjoy meeting homebuyers’ needs and desires, and matching those up with what works for each person’s budget and the lot size.

She gives an example of a house that Mobley Homes built in K-Bar Ranch. “ We had a customer who is a car collector, so we built a home with a six-car garage,” Renée says. “In fact, we raised the ceiling to accommodate a lift, so he actually keeps about 10 cars in there.” This level of customization is not unusual for Mobley Homes. “It’s what our clients appreciate,” she says. “This is probably the largest purchase you’re going to make, so as long as the lot can accommodate what you want, we’ll do it.” Renée adds, “Our homes speak for themselves as far as quality,” explaining that over the years, many of the builder’s models have won numerous awards, including Parade of Homes awards, given by the Tampa Bay Builders Association (TBBA) during its annual event showcasing new homes throughout the Tampa Bay area. She says the homes are always spacious and wellplanned by award-winning architects. Mobley Homes are currently for sale in four communities throughout the Tampa Bay area, including two located very close to Wesley Chapel.

In K-Bar Ranch, Mobley Homes offers a variety of luxurious floor plans in the Bassett Creek subdivision, all ranging from four to six bedrooms. Each floor plan is more than 2,500 square feet, with homes starting in the mid $300,000s and conservation views on most home sites. Amenities throughout Bassett Creek include a community pool, basketball court and playground.

Lakeside Oaks Reserve features 15 home sites in a brand new, gated, private subdivision located in the heart of what is considered “the original Carrollwood area,” off of Orange Grove Blvd. near N. Dale Mabry Hwy. Home prices start in the $400,000s. Many of the home sites are lakefront, so residents will enjoy relaxing water activities and breathtaking sunsets from their backyards. Mobley Homes also is building in Cypress Estates in Carrollwood Village, with 16 conservation home sites in a new, gated community. Home prices start in the $500,000s. Renée says this community is selling quickly, with more than half the available homes already sold.

Loyless Funeral Homes Has Been Serving Bay-Area Families Since 1987! By Anu Varma Panchal Ask to see the business card of one of the 30 employees who work for John Loyless at his eponymous funeral home, and you might notice something. No one has a title under their name — not even Loyless himself. That underscores a key point about Loyless and the funeral home business he started with one employee back in 1987. “Whether you’re directing traffic in the parking lot, or directing the funeral inside, it’s all important,” Loyless says. Since 1994, Loyless Funeral Homes has offered Tampa Bay residents compassionate guidance during some of the most difficult times of their lives (before that, Loyless served clients only through his Florida Mortuary & Crematorium in Seminole Heights). With a full-service funeral home and crematorium in Land O’Lakes and an Arrangement Center in the Pebble Creek Collection shopping center (behind Kobe Steak House) off Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. in New Tampa, Loyless offers clients a place close to home where they can take the necessary steps: transporting and preparing their loved one, burying or cremating them, and gathering people to honor their life in a proper ceremony. In an industry now dominated by large corporations, Loyless remains one of the few family-owned businesses that offers value and quality. When customers come to Loyless Funeral Homes, the employees who meet with them not only get to design a unique funeral, but also serve as guides and counselors, helping families sift through their

26

memories amidst their grief and find the perfect way to memorialize the life of their departed loved one. “It’s a critical moment in a lot of people’s lives,” says Loyless. Loyless grew up in Brandon (Left): Loyless Funeral and first became interested in this Homes founder John Loyless. Loyless’ New Tampa field when, as a Arrangement Center student at USF, he got a part time is located in the Pebble job at a friend’s Creek Collection off BBD. father’s funeral home. Realizing that the profession dovetailed with his inclination to help people, he left USF and studied mortuary sciences at Miami Dade Community College, graduating with his Associate in Science (A.S.) degree in Mortuary Science in 1985. He then interned for a year with a local funeral home company before he established his business first as the Florida Mortuary & Crematorium brand in 1987 in Seminole Heights. He opened Loyless Funeral Homes in Land O’ Lakes in 1994, and the Arrangement Center in Pebble Creek followed three years ago. “It’s convenient for families who live here in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel,” Loyless explains. Although you can do the same things at the Land O’ Lakes facility, the Arrangement Center provides a neighbor-

hood place on BBD. where grieving families can sit down with staff members to discuss everything from flowers, readings and music to officiants and ways to memorialize loved ones. A large-screen television in a tastefully muted conference room serves as a virtual showroom for families to view catalogs and samples of caskets and urns, and examples of ways to memorialize loved ones hang on the walls.

So Many Options

Loyless employees can help direct bereaved families through a plethora of options. For the burial, families can choose from immediate, graveside services, visitations or memorial services, which can be organized at several venues from Loyless Funeral Homes itself to local churches to

family homes. Those who choose cremation also can have graveside services at interment or choose to scatter ashes or keep them. Many also opt to memorialize loved ones through a video tribute, online memory wall or keepsake stationery. For veterans, Loyless Funeral Homes can arrange everything from a riderless horse and military band to memorial plots. The company also helps growing numbers of people preplan and prepay for their own funerals, something Loyless says comes as a relief to the family left behind, as they no longer have to guess at what music their loved one might have wanted played, for example, as well as other details. One big change Loyless says he has seen in recent years is the increasing number of ways in which people choose to retain a small part of their loved ones. People are not only turning to cremation in greater numbers than before, they also are thinking beyond the traditional urn. Some opt for smaller repositories, so each sibling can share part of their parent, for example, while others want jewelry — called memory glass — that they can wear that can contain a portion of the ashes. Another popular item is a “thumbie,” jewelry that features an imprint of a departed loved one’s thumb. Another change is the increase in number of non-religious funerals over the past 5-10 years, Loyless says. “We serve more people today that are unchurched, who say, ‘We want a celebration of life without a religious service.’” All the directors on Loyless’ staff are trained in officiating services for people who do not want clergy present. For

Because the Tampa Bay area is one that so many people move into from so many other places, Loyless and his funeral directors also have served at enough funerals to learn about the nuances of the different cultures they serve. Families are often pleasantly surprised to learn that Loyless funeral directors have a working knowledge of faraway religious customs and traditions, as well as a willingness to listen and learn more. “When you’re in a metro area with such diverse cultures, it’s important to be open and respectful,” says Loyless. “We listen.” Loyless himself is a New Tampa local, having lived in Hunter’s Green since the early ’90s with his wife, Starr (who also is the company’s bookkeeper). Their daughters attended Hunter’s Green Elementary, Louis Benito Middle School and Paul R. Wharton High. Today, the older daughter, Brittni, 28, is studying mortuary science while her sister, Alexia, 25, attends medical school. area residents, and Loyless doesn’t take that responsibility lightly. “When a family calls us, one of the most important things is that we want them to feel confident that they made the right choice,” says Loyless, who adds that one way he can ensure that is by hiring the right people to serve his clients’ needs. “We have wonderful, long-term people who have been with us a long time,” says Loyless. “You can get two people with the same resume but you can see when you work with them if they are passionate about people and about those we serve. We can teach people how to do the job, but we can’t teach people to care. I’m always looking for that personality — that person who cares about other people first and foremost.” Loyless Funeral Home is located at 5310 Land O’ Lakes Blvd., and the New Tampa Arrangement Center is at 19651 BBD Blvd., Suite E-2. Visiting Angels Brings Care To Your Loved Ones In Their Own Homes By Celeste McLaughlin Christal Becton opened Visiting Angels to serve New Tampa and other parts of Hillsborough County in 2004. As the franchise owner and director, she says she feels blessed to be in the business of helping senior citizens and their families. Visiting Angels provides home care services as an alternative to moving into a nursing home, retirement center or assisted living facility, allowing seniors and others in need to maintain the independence of their daily routines in the comfort of their own homes. It is a nationally branded company, headquartered in Pennsylvania, with 500 locations across the U.S. “When my 84-year-old aunt, who lived in Columbia, SC, needed assistance, I had to hire a caregiver for her because I was unable to keep traveling back and forth to care for her,” Christal explains. “I believe that’s what started me on the road to in-home care. After my husband retired from the military, and I was ready to get out of my job in corporate America, I began looking into franchises. That’s when I found Visiting Angels.” Christal opened the Visiting Angels office on N. 56th St. (south of Fowler Ave.) in Temple Terrace, minutes from most of New Tampa. She has a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, and a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in organizational management from the University of Phoenix campus in Albuquerque, NM. She also has a wealth of previous nursing home experience, having served as Chief of

Recreation Therapy at a nursing home in Albuquerque. While the business has grown over the past 12 years, Christal says that what hasn’t changed is her passion for helping people and for matching clients with caregivers to give them the help they need in their homes. “I enjoy working with seniors in need,” says Christal. “So, this is the perfect profession for me.” She says every aspect of running Visiting Angels is rewarding. “The challenges are learning experiences and never a burden. We really have very few issues.”

Services

“Most of our clients are seniors who need some extra help,” Christal explains. “We also can help anyone over 18 who needs assistance. Younger people sometimes need help, too, due to their own physical challenges or health issues.” Available services include everything from helping someone temporarily recover from an illness or surgery to providing ongoing companionship to a senior who just needs a friend. “We also go grocery shopping and run errands, prepare meals, assist with personal care and do light housekeeping,” Christal adds. She says some clients require help with bathing or shaving, some just need a hand getting up in the morning and starting their day, while others may need clothes laundered and linens changed. One difficulty common for many seniors, especially those who don’t drive or have a relative nearby, is arranging transportation

to their doctors’ appointments. Visiting Angels’ staff will transport clients to and from their appointments, and always remain on site throughout their clients’ visits. “We provide the vehicle,” Christal says, adding that the service is a relief to relatives who find it difficult to take time off from work to drive their loved ones to their medical appointments. Visiting Angels accommodates its clients’ schedules, whether they need a few hours of assistance a week or even 24-hour-per-day, 7-day-per-week care. Day or night, weekends or holidays, temporary or long-term, Visiting Angels can help.

in home care and/or have worked at assisted living facilities or in other health care environments. Christal says Visiting Angels caregivers choose to specialize in home care because they enjoy the personal interaction with only one or two clients. “One of my CNAs has been with the same client since 2004,” she says. “In hiring, I make sure my staff has a passion for doing what they do, and that they have a strong employment history in caring for seniors.” Christal also interacts with each new family who calls Visiting Angels and requests a free, in-home assessment. “I personally do each new client assessment myself,” she says. “I like to make a connection with the family. I get to see how they live and learn about their background, which makes it easier to connect them with the right caregiver.” During the in-home assessment, she reviews each client’s needs and asks about the types of services desired, noting the patient’s daily routine, meals, proximity to doctors’ offices and number of regularly scheduled appointments. She then prepares a care plan and selects the caregivers who are best suited to meet your needs. After personally meeting all of the available caregivers, you get to choose the candidate you prefer. “One of the things that sets Visiting Angels apart from other home care services is that our clients get to choose their caregivers,” Christal explains. “People don’t just show up and say, ‘I’m here to take care of you.’ Our clients actually meet the caregivers beforehand, so they already feel comfortable with the person who will be caring for them.” These caregivers become an important

part of each patient’s routines, and often, families let Christal know the significance of the care their loved one received in their time of need. “Thank you for the wonderful care you provided,” said a grateful family in a letter to Visiting Angels. “You were more than a caregiver to us, you quickly became a friend… [Mom] so appreciated your presence and friendship, as we all did… It was always a relief to us to know that when we needed you, we had no worries at all about Mom being taken good care of.” Christal says that technology also allows her to keep in close contact with the families of her clients — whether they are out of town or busy working, a quick text or email keeps Christal, the caregiver and the family all on the same page regarding a patient’s care. In addition, technology allows Visiting Angels to provide information to the community, even those who aren’t her clients. Christal sends out a newsletter and also provides information on the company’s Facebook page at Facebook.com/ VisitingAngelsTampaFL, informing people about dementia, caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s, fall prevention and other issues that affect seniors. “The greatest change I’ve seen as a business is our ability to communicate with the community and use technology effectively to reach out to the community and be a resource,” she says. Visiting Angels is located at 9812 N. 56th St. in Temple Terrace. See the ad on page 15 of this issue for more information. Bay Breeze Car Wash & Lube Has 2 Convenient New Tampa Locations! By Brad Stager

Setting out on a cross-town, rush hour drive doesn’t have to be an onerous journey if your car is looking good and running right. Bay Breeze Car Wash & Lube can help by cleaning your car’s finish to a spotless shine, detailing the interior to look, feel and smell great and ensuring that all of your vehicle’s life-giving fluids are refreshed, all in one visit. And, an automotive makeover at Bay Breeze all but guarantees that your view will be through a clean windshield. Bay Breeze has seven locations in four counties, from Polk to Pinellas, including three that are within minutes of most Wesley Chapel residents. The company’s flagship location is the full-service operation in the heart of New Tampa on N. Palms Village Pl., off of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., just north of I-75. The second New Tampa location is an express wash and lube operation on Trout Creek Dr., off of BBD, north of Paul R. Wharton High (next to Burger 21). Many Wesley Chapel residents have found the Land O’Lakes express wash and lube facility located a little west of the Tampa Premium Outlets on S.R. 54 at Foggy Ridge Pkwy. The hands-on detailing provided at the N. Palms Village facility (referred to as the New Tampa location on Bay Breeze’s website) provides bumper-to-bumper, carpetto-headliner, sidewall-to-sidewall cleaning. Lube services include oil and filter changes and preventive maintenance on cooling systems and transmissions.

30

Moses Pomales, the general manager at Bay Breeze Car Wash & Lube’s “express” location just south of County Line Rd., monitors the traffic through the express wash tunnel. Bay Breeze’s express wash and lube facilities offer quick, efficient, hands-free, machine-operated cleaning as well as basic upkeep. A free express wash is included with each oil change and express washes include free customer use of vacuums to clean their interiors and air to inflate their tires. The family that owns the business has made being the Tampa Bay area’s premiere car wash and lube destination its goal. VP of operations Scott Barone says achieving that means making a strong commitment to customer service. “We like to say ‘above and beyond,’”

Barone says. “That means the place looks good and things are operating at the Bay Breeze level of quality.”

Keeping Customers Satisfied

Barone identified five areas the company emphasizes when conducting business: “Quality, service, cleanliness, friendliness (being easy to do business with) and safety.” Abiding by these high standards has earned Bay Breeze recognition from readers of the Tampa Bay Business Journal, who voted the company “Best in the Biz” for the years 2012, 2013 and 2015 in the Favorite

Car Wash & Detailer category. There’s also praise from locals like Pam Cazes, who has been a longtime Bay Breeze customer and whose entire family of six drivers also use the New Tampa locations. “We take our cars there for detailing and oil changes,” says Cazes, who lives in Cory Lake Isles. “The service is excellent and they treat the cars with respect.” At the Trout Creek express location (called the Bruce B. Downs store on Bay Breeze’s website), general manager Moses Pomales is responsible for providing customers an optimal Bay Breeze experience. Pomales came up through the ranks of the company, starting out as a lube greeter and working in a succession of supervisory positions over nine years before assuming his current position. Pomales says his approach is to always put customer needs first. “I walk the facility and interact with customers to see what they need,” the Cross Creek resident says. “We’re here to give them the best experience they can have, from beginning to end.” That experience starts as soon as a customer enters a Bay Breeze driveway, with a greeter providing directions to the appropriate service area. If maintenance is on the agenda, the car’s VIN is scanned on an iPad and its service history is available to the technicians. The customer waiting area is decorated and maintained like a bank lobby in terms of cleanliness and comfort. But, Barone says, it’s not as if express lube customers have a lot of time to settle in for a long stay.

@NTWCNews

“As soon as we start working on a car, our goal is 15 minutes or less for an oil change,” Barone says. Bay Breeze acquired the Trout Creek location about a year ago. The company closed the facility down for a few weeks to re-configure the express wash tunnels and make other improvements. Barone invites people who had been customers of the previous business to check out the changes. “Come on back and see us,” he says. For drivers who like to maintain their cars in spotless condition, Bay Breeze offers monthly VIP package memberships that save frequent customers money. “We get customers who come in every morning to get a car wash,” Pomales says. Bay Breeze also offers discounts to members of the military and the law enforcement community. Since opening in North Palms Village in 2004, Bay Breeze has grown to its current seven locations and about 100 employees, according to Barone. The full-service New Tampa location is the largest facility, with 55 employees. Achieving that growth means investing in people and technology, as well as real estate for locations. The company has an established training program for new employees who may be new to the car wash and lube industry, including certification for technicians through the Automotive Oil Change Association. Computers track everything from traffic flow through the wash tunnels and chemical usage to sales of wiper blades. That information is even available via mobile devices, so Bay Breeze managers aren’t tethered to a computer to stay on top of

things and can be available to maintain the company’s high level of customer service. When it comes to the actual cleaning of their cars, customers benefit from the latest car wash technology, especially when it comes to protection from the harsh environment of Florida’s sunshine and thunderstorms. Various sealants and protectants are available, including a new Nano-polymer protective sealant. Barone credits using the premium product with keeping his car’s appearance at its best. “I personally have not had my vehicle hand-waxed in over two years, but because I use our Nano product an average of once a week, it still looks like I just drove it off the showroom floor,” he says. Barone adds that people need to wash their cars more often in the summer to combat the effects of both the sun’s ultraviolet radiation and the wearing effects of rain on a car’s finish. New Community Health Center Opens At Hunter’s Green Elementary By Celeste McLaughlin

After spending the weekend moving from Naples to Heritage Isles, Shane (who asked we use only his first name) walked into Heritage Elementary to register his daughter Giana for fifth grade. He brought a stack of paperwork with him, trying to guess what he would need. Turns out, he guessed wrong. He didn’t have her record of vaccinations, and he didn’t have a record of a recent physical. “To get into school in Hillsborough County, or anywhere in Florida, you have to have a physical,” says Evie Roque, MSN (Master of Science in Nursing), a nurse practitioner who works at the new community health center located on the campus of Hunter’s Green Elementary. Shane and Giana were referred to the health center to get her physical and immunization records so that she could start school. “I called her doctor in Naples five or six times and I never got a call back,” Shane says. “If it wasn’t for these ladies, I would still be trying to get her shot records.” Being new to the area, Shane didn’t yet have a primary care physician for Giana. The referrals he had gotten from her pediatrician in Naples didn’t pan out, and he wanted to start her in her new school as soon as possible. Dr. Maria Russ, supervisor of school health services for Hillsborough County Schools, says Giana’s situation isn’t unique. “Sometimes we see kids who are out of school three or four months waiting to enroll because they don’t have access to healthcare to get their school physical and vaccines,” she says. “So, our health centers are a surrogate for people until they find a permanent medical home.” Roque explains, “We’re not primary care health providers. We don’t do treatments, and we’re not prescribing medications. Our goal is to get students into school, so we do physicals and make sure immunizations are up to date.” While they don’t provide immunizations, the health care professionals at the clinic have access to statewide immunization records, and they refer people to the State of Florida Health Department if immunizations are needed. Hunter’s Green Elementary has been

Giana gets checked out by nurse practitioner Evie Roque at the new Community Health Center, which is located on the campus of Hunter’s Green Elementary, but available to all students. the site of a school-based health center for more than 10 years, but the building it was housed in was dilapidated. Dr. Russ and other school officials wrote a grant to request money available through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as authorized by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. They received $500,000 for the construction and outfitting of the new, modular building. It was officially opened on August 19, when Hillsborough County school officials gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. “We had the support of the superintendent and the School Board for this project,” says Dr. Russ. “And, (U.S.) Representative Kathy Castor and Senator Bill Nelson were instrumental in that money being appropriated for this project.” Dr. Russ also says that every high school in the county has a health center, but the Hunter’s Green Community Health Center is unique. It is one of just a few located at an elementary school, and most health centers are within the school campus. The Hunter’s Green health center is housed in a stand-alone modular building on campus, but completely outside of the school, so that it is easily accessible to families who need to use its services. The grant even paid for additional parking spaces right outside the building. Inside, the clinic features a waiting

room, four treatment rooms, and a classroom equipped with smartboard technology for training nurses. Registered nurse Angella Eikenberry does patient intake at the health center, and also is responsible for training all new Hillsborough County Schools nurses in electronic medical records. While a student doesn’t need a referral to visit the health center, many school principals and registrars refer families to the school-based health centers, including the one at Hunter’s Green.

“It can be an obstacle to being in school if parents can’t afford co-pays or have gaps in their insurance,” says Dr. Russ. So the staff at the clinic helps with needed services and connects families with health care providers. Melanie Hall, executive director of the Family Healthcare Foundation in Tampa, says, “The Hunter’s Green clinic is ideally situated in an area that has a high concentration of uninsured children who need access to care.” She says that, according to data from the Florida Healthy Kids Corporation, the 33647 ZIP code has just under 9% of children who are uninsured, and the greatest number of uninsured kids in Hillsborough County are in the neighboring zip codes, 33592 (Thonotosassa) and 33559 (Lutz). “We’ve found that school grades go up when kids are in school,” says Dr. Russ. “That’s our focus, to keep kids in school.” It worked for Giana. After being referred to the Hunter’s Green center, she and her dad were thrilled with their experience. “These ladies are so personable,” says Shane. “Giana is afraid of the doctor, afraid of the dentist, but they made her feel so comfortable, and the way they interacted with her made me comfortable, too.” And, that paperwork he needed? “They were so helpful,” he says. “Angella came out from behind the desk and sat down with me and helped with each thing that needed to be filled out.” And best of all, Giana was able to start school right away.

Trip To Ireland Spurring Olympic Dreams For Wharton Junior By Andy Warrener Watching the 2016 Summer Olympics was a real treat for 15-year-old Paul R. Wharton High junior Yasmine Gillespie. It provided a nice respite from the young athlete’s busy schedule, as she got to see martial artists from all over the world compete for gold in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. What the second-degree black belt did not know was that during the Olympics, several new sports were given a chance to be included in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, and making the cut was karate, both kata (one-person forms) and kumite (two-person grappling/sparring). The former infused instant dreams into the mind of Yasmine, who over the summer found out she would be representing Team USA at the World Karate & Kickboxing Commission (WKC) World Championships in Dublin, Ireland. In June, she attended the WKC national tournament in Dearborn, Michigan on the University of Michigan’s Dearborn campus. “The way it works is they call you up, you do your form, they score you, then you go again and it repeats until you eventually get a compiled score,” Yasmine says. “When they called the top four qualifiers up, I didn’t realize that was what it was for, I thought they just called me up to perform again.” Instead, one of the other girls leaned over to her and said, “You’re coming with us to Dublin. Welcome to the team.” “I was so shocked,” Yasmine said. “I got the medals and took pictures and I was thinking, ‘Oh, my God. I’m on Team USA. That’s real.’”

“I’m really good with time management,” Yasmine says. “I find time to work on homework after lunch and in that hour between volleyball practice and karate class. It’s hard to fit it in but I make sure and find time; I plan ahead.” That careful planning and management has helped Yasmine succeed not only academically, but also in her athletic pursuits. “She was just too big and strong for the little guys,” Augello says. “We had to set the bar higher for her.” Yasmine keeps jumping over that bar. In July, she earned her second black belt, and also competed in the U.S. Open Karate World Championships in Orlando and won the International Championship in regular kata in the 15-16 age group. Her brother Sammy, who is 11, also competes and will join her in Dublin. “My wife and I wanted to get our kids into karate at an early age,” Yasmine’s father Brian said. “And, not just for self defense but also for confidence and having experience getting out and performing at a young age.”

Wharton’s Zachary Godbold Wins Javelin Event At Junior Olympics By John C. Cotey

Looking for something new to try, Zach Godbold’s eyes caught a javelin sitting in the grass near where his Running Tigers of Hillsborough County Track Club teammates were training. Uninterested in the long distance runs that had lured him to the club with his big brother Frankie, Zach had been only mildly satisfied with throwing the shot put and discus. “They were just okay,’’ he says. But, the javelin? Now, that looked a little more interesting. Turns out, Zach made an excellent choice that day. He is now the best 14-year-old javelin thrower in the country and the reigning AAU Junior Olympic (JO) champion. In August, the New Tampa teenager turned in the biggest throw of his life, a whopping 167 feet, 5 inches — at the biggest event of his life — to capture the gold medal. “It was pretty big,’’ Zach says. “Especially because it was such an important event.” The JO win capped a huge spring and summer for Zach, a 14-year-old freshman at Wharton. He won a handful of local and regional events, and improved his throws by more than 40 feet from the beginning of track and field season to the end. “I think that’s what was most impressive, how he went from throwing 120 to 140 to 160,’’ said his father, Frank. “That’s pretty impressive.”

Wharton freshman Zach Godbold (center) receives his gold medal for his career-best throw of 167 feet, 5 inches, in the javelin at the AAU Junior Olympics in July. Frank and his wife Maria hardly imagined such heights were attainable five years ago, when Zach first noticed that javelin laying in the grass near the track at TurnerBartells K-8 School, where the Running Tigers practiced. Coach Gig Brown told him to give it a try. It was a natural fit. “I wasn’t the best at it (right away),’’ Zach says, “but I learned it quickly.”

There aren’t many sports at which the natural athlete hasn’t succeeded. He plays top-flight club soccer for the Temple Terrace Spirit, he was an exceptional pitcher on the Little League baseball diamond, he has run track and he’s currently playing junior varsity football — as a kicker and punter — for the Wildcats. But, it is this most unique sport that has brought Zach his greatest success.

Once Brown got him started, Zach took it from there. He would find a place to throw while his teammates raced around the track, and he and Frank would search out empty fields near their Arbor Greene home to practice, often at the overgrown baseball fields across from Pride Elementary. Because actual javelin coaches are about as rare as an uncongested road in New Tampa, Zach studied YouTube videos in his free time to hone his craft. “The javelin is much different from other throwing events because you don’t need to be big and strong and have a lot of muscles to throw it,’’ says Zach, who is 5-foot-9 inches tall and roughly 160 pounds. “If you’re smaller and want to try throwing because you don’t like running, you can be good at this.” Or great, as Zach was this summer. He had competed at the Junior Olympics the three previous years, in the javelin and the discus, but had never had his breakthrough. In 2013, he finished seventh, followed by a second-place finish in 2014 and 12th-place in 2015.

Taking It To His Rival

His primary rival was No. 1-ranked Jack Caudle of Atchison, KS, who beat out Zach for the gold in 2014 and set a national record for 13-year-olds while winning again last year, with a throw of 147-11. If he were to win, Zach knew it was

@NTWCNews

Caudle he would have to beat as they squared off with 58 other competitors at Turner Stadium in Humble, TX. Competitors are allowed three throws in the preliminary round, with the top eight advancing to the finals, where they get three more throws. The best throw, including those in prelims, wins gold. Zach wasted no time — on his first throw, he delivered a career-best toss of 167’-5”. “I felt pretty confident, and I knew that was going to make it into the finals,’’ he said. Zach didn’t manage a better throw, though he did clear 160 feet with two other throws. He didn’t need to improve, however. He anxiously watched as the other competitors tried to better his top distance, including Caudle, who had come up short on his first five throws. But, the tall lefty had one throw — and one nerve-wracking moment for the Godbold family — remaining, and he sent the javelin sailing high into the Texas sky, his best throw of the competition. “I was so nervous,’’ Zach said. “I knew it was going to be really close.” It was — Caudle came up with a throw of 166’-10”, just seven inches shy of a third straight championship, and in the stands Frank and Maria Godbold jumped with joy. “I thought Maria was going to lose her mind,’’ Frank said, chuckling. “I’m real proud of him, obviously. Not just about winning, but doing it on the biggest stage. The other guy had just been better

Neighborhood News

than him, and to see him get over the hump, it meant a lot. Never in our wildest dreams did we imagine this kind of moment when he started throwing a javelin.” As a former Little League pitcher and back-up quarterback in football who was only used for long throws like Hail Marys, the javelin was the perfect fit. Most in his age group send their javelins arcing high into the air; Zach is known for his low, long throw. “He always had a tremendous arm,’’ says Frank. “His uncle used to tell him he should be throwing a baseball.” In five years, Zach has developed into one of the best young javelin throwers in the land. He has put away his 600-gram (21-lb.), 7-foot-long javelin for the winter, while he focuses on football and soccer. Despite the fact he can’t compete in the event in high school because the javelin is not a sanctioned high school field event in Florida, like the discus and shot put, Zach plans on throwing the javelin all the way to college, and maybe beyond. Next spring, he moves up to the 800gram (28-lb.) javelin, which is between 8’3’’ and 8’7” long, the same one you see being thrown at the Olympics. He will continue to travel the state and country as he competes in AAU track season and competitions, with one goal in mind — to keep getting better. “It’s definitely something I love doing,” Zach says, “and I’m definitely sticking with it.” Like five years ago, that’s probably another good choice.

Just A Good ‘Ol Boy Making His Films The Only Way He Knows By John C. Cotey John Schneider has starred in hit television shows like “The Dukes of Hazzard” and “Smallville,” where he played Superman’s father on earth, and is currently starring in Tyler Perry’s popular “The Haves and the Have Nots” on the Oprah Network. Schneider has had five singles reach No. 1 on the country music charts. He also has made and starred in dozens of films. His latest adventure, however, may be the one he finds the most exciting. Monday, October 31-Friday, November 3, Schneider and producer Alicia Allain (founder of Maven Entertainment) are bringing the CineFlix Film Festival to the Cobb Grove 16 & Cinebistro in Wesley Chapel as part of what Schneider says is a first-of-its-kind independent film festival. The concept: to showcase new filmmakers while also giving them a cut of the festival’s sales proceeds. John Schneider, best known for his role in the 1980s as Bo Duke in “The Dukes of Hazzard,” is head“It’s our first year, so there may be ing up the CineFlix Film Fest, which will make a stop in Wesley Chapel Oct. 31-Nov. 3. some bumps in the road,’’ Schneider says. “Not only have we never done this before… to realize that I thought somebody needs to thing else,’’ Schneider says, adding that all no one has done this before.” 75,000 square feet of floor space was under start a filmmaker-centered film festival, and Schneider then chuckled. “In two wouldn’t it be cool, since I used to travel on at least three feet of water, with some places weeks, I’m sure we’ll be saying, ‘What in country music tours, to take it to the people as deep as six feet. the world were we thinking?’ But, we’re all Because they had no power or Wi-Fi, instead of people having to search out indeabout trying new things and helping folks he and Allain went to a nearby hotel and pendent films?” have a new experience.” watched the film festival entries there. customized 1969 Dodge Charger, aka the General Lee, Schneider grew up in southern New York running around filming things on a Super 8 camera and making movies even as a kid. “I’ve always considered myself a filmmaker,’’ he says.

A New Career Path

When his run as Bo Duke ended, Schneider became a country music star. But, technology, he says, helped get him back into filmmaking. It doesn’t take nearly as many people to make movies today as it once did, and running your own movie studio doesn’t require the millions of dollars it once did. It was an easy decision to return to his roots. Independent films are often stereotyped as low-budget, off-the-beaten-path movies that aren’t profitable enough for the major studios to bother with. Schneider, who has a lead role in one of the films that will show in Wesley Chapel, as well as cameos in a few others, says there are plenty of hidden gems in the field. “The great thing about independent filmmakers is they have an idea, they have a story they want to tell, they have a perspective, and they carry that story and perspective all the way through to the end,’’ Schneider says. “So, you see an A+ term paper.” Schneider says there are movies and documentaries. One of the movies, Hate Crime, opens with police surrounding a suspect who is holding a weapon as dead bodies lay scattered around him. The police then proceed to take the weapon in for questioning, and the film follows the prosecution of the weapon all the way through trial. “It is absurd and wonderful all at the same time,’’ Schneider says. A Salute to Honor revolves around three See “Schneider” on page 62.

One More Important Update For Our 2016 Dining Survey & Contest!

I feel really badly that, despite our updating of this year’s Dining Survey & Contest in our last issue, I still left one more mom & pop restaurant off the list — and this issue will be the last time you can enter this year’s contest. Therefore, I hope those of you who love Capital Tacos as much as I do will look for it on our list of restaurants located in Wesley Chapel (below, right) and in the “Favorite Mexican or Latin Restaurant” category on page 44. If you already sent in a survey, you can send us a replacement entry until Friday, October 28, to include Capital Tacos, or just keep the entry you submitted without it. Just for filling out the entry form on these two pages (43 & 44) and sending it by mail or email or filling it out online, you can win $50, $100 or even $200 in absolutely FREE dining at the restaurant of your choice, whether it’s located in New Tampa or Wesley Chapel or not! To be eligible to win our Grand Prize (or either of the other two big dining prizes), you MUST vote for FIVE (5) restaurants in BOTH of the two categories (“Your Favorite Restaurants in New Tampa” & “Favorite Restaurants in Wesley Chapel”) on this page, and at least ONE (1) restaurant in AT LEAST HALF OF THE CATEGORIES ON THE NEXT PAGE or your entry will be disqualified and your votes will not count! And yes, you can still write-in the names of the larger chain restaurants in any category, but we only provide the names of the “Mom&-Pops” because they don’t have the benefit of being able to afford regional and national TV, national magazine and local radio ads that the large chains have running all year-round, which makes it hard for them to compete for your attention and name recognition. Please do not write in or vote for any restaurant more than once in any category, it just disqualifies every one of your votes. Please also do not write in a restaurant located in Wesley Chapel (zip codes 33543-45) as your favorite in New Tampa (zip code 33647) or vice-versa, as those votes will not count. Entries without enough categories filled in or with the same restaurant voted in every category will be disqualified. No purchase of any kind is necessary to win. — GN

Minerva Indian Restaurant Now Open In The New Tampa Center!

Minerva Restaurant — Casual, Comfortable & Delicious!

Y

By Brad Stager

our dining adventure begins as soon as you step inside Minerva Indian Restaurant. Suddenly gone is the bustle outside at the Publix-anchored New Tampa Center at the corner of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. and New Tampa Blvd. Inhale the fragrance of jasmine incense and come face-to-face with a figurine of the elephant-headed Hindu deity Ganesh. This initial stimulation of sight and smell will warm up all of your senses to enjoy the wide range of flavors featured on Minerva’s menu, which spans India’s cuisine from south to north, and even includes some IndoChinese fare. Owner Venkat Reddy has gathered the ingredients he needs to offer a taste of Indian home-style cooking to New Tampa gourmands and foodies. “We have our own recipes from India and all of our spices come from India,” says Reddy, who grew up in Hyderabad, India. Minerva has only been open since June — in the location previously occupied by Sushi Ko — but it’s already gaining a loyal following of repeat customers, like David Britton, who says he typically eats there once-aweek for lunch. “It’s got some of the best Indian food in the area,” Britton said. “I can’t always pronounce what I’m eating, but I really like the spiciness.” How spicy to prepare the food is one of the toughest culinary calibrations a chef can make. According to Reddy, guiding first-time visitors through the menu to accommodate their preferences and tolerances is part of the customer service at Minerva. “We have a lot of varieties and I’ll ask them first how spicy they like their food,” says Reddy, who also is a New Tampa resident. While consideration is given to the varied palates and expectations of patrons, Minerva 46

stays true to delivering an authentic Indian dining experience, according to Perry Compton, who lived in India as a religious missionary and learned to cook in the local tradition. He sampled the lunch buffet for his initial visit to the restaurant and vowed to return. “It’s my first time here but it won’t be my last,” Compton, a Wesley Chapel resident, says. “This food is some of the best I’ve ever eaten.” Compton was particularly impressed with Minerva’s butter chicken. “I make a pretty good one myself, and it takes so many ingredients to make.” Butter chicken may qualify as comfort food for fans of Indian cuisine, and is a popular item on Minerva’s extensive lunch buffet. The spiciness manifests as a creamy assortment of subtle flavors rather than a searing burn to the taste buds. Allowing diners to savor those flavors is characteristic of the dishes at Minerva, especially the buffet items, which are all prepared in the mild-to-medium range of spiciness. The lunch buffet is offered seven days a week and is changed daily, offering a good introduction to Indian cuisine. A la carte items can be ordered during lunch as well as dinner hours. There are no beef or pork dishes on Minerva’s menu, but meat eaters have plenty of chicken, lamb, goat and seafood options. Goat curry is a good introduction to the red meat, which is a staple of diets around the globe, if not so much in the U.S.

featured as part of Minerva’s lunch buffet. Chinese foods like fried rice and chow mein assume an Indian flavor with the addition of ingredients like cumin and chilies. Minerva combines rice and soft noodles with vegetables, chicken and shrimp for the various Indo-Chinese entrees like hakka veg chowmein and mixed fried rice. Neighborhood News publisher and dining reviewer Gary Nager raves about the Indo-Chinese chicken fried rice. “It has a uniquely peppery, mild spiciness,” Gary says, “and lots of veggies.” Gary also enjoyed the garlic naan bread and the medium-spicy tandoori-style chicken. Beverages include American and Indian soft drinks, juices, tea, coffee, wine and domestic and Indian beers like Taj Mahal, Old Monk 10000 Super Beer and Kingfisher. There also is a great selection of authentic Indian desserts to sample. The wine list is actually pretty extensive, ranging from Clos du Bois chardonnay to 14 Hands Hot to Trot red blend. Minerva offers a spacious and comfortable environment with light, modern decor

and instrumental Indian pop music providing the soundtrack. The successful pairing of food and space is key to creating a positive dining experience, and according to the McCoy family of Wesley Chapel, Reddy has put it all together at his Minerva. “What really enhances the food here is the ambiance,” says Anthony McCoy. His wife Rita also enjoys eating at Minerva, which has helped her become a fan of Indian cuisine. “I’m trying all the different flavors because this is something I’m going to be cooking with more,” she said. The McCoys’ son, Shawn, appreciated the low-key spiciness of the buffet. “This has spice, but it’s within my tolerance,” he said. Reddy named his restaurant Minerva after a popular cafe chain of that name in his hometown. He says he earned his certificate as a foodservice professional and moved to the U.S. Reddy comes to New Tampa after owning and operating restaurants in Dallas and Temple Terrace. As word gets around about Minerva, people like Sam Abrahani are coming from

The Cuisine For Vegetarians

Vegetarian dining takes on a whole different aspect with Indian food. Vegetables are often main dishes and are cooked with spices that imbue them with appetizing flavors, such as bagara baigan, which has eggplant as its basis. Even humble lentil beans take on a bold taste when served as the curry dish tadka dal. Masala dosas, which are thin rice crepes filled with curry-glazed vegetables, also are

Cappys Pizzeria Of Tampa Palms By Gary Nager

E

ven if I never tell you that Cappys Pizzeria, located in the City Plaza at Tampa Palms shopping center, is my absolute favorite pizzeria in New Tampa or Wesley Chapel, I will say that I have never had a bad meal at this inviting, uniquely decorated little gem. Cappys Tampa Palms managing partner Harold Hasselback says that even though his pizzeria has never been #1 in either our annual Reader Survey or on my list of favorite pizzerias in the area, he’s proud that the five Cappys locations together have won the “Best of the Bay” title from Creative Loafing’s readers an amazing nine times. “People always ask us why we don’t do wings or pasta or other Italian specialties, like other pizzerias,” Hasselback told me during my most recent visit. “I tell them that, at Cappys, we’d rather do everything we do the best we can do it and the fact we’ve won so many awards from not only Creative Loafing, but also Tampa magazine tells me we’re doing it right.” And, that logic is hard to argue, as Cappys is unassumingly always packed for lunch and dinner and offers great craft beers (like Cigar City Brewing’s Jai Alai) on draft, although I still prefer the mass-produced Italian Peroni beer, as well as house red and white wines and six different wines available by the

Zaytoun Grill Closes

We’re always unhappy any time a good mom & pop restaurant closes in our area, but we were particularly saddened to learn that Zaytoun Mediterranean Grill had closed after being open for business for a little more than a year. A sign posted at Zaytoun (photo in next column) said, “Zaytoun is temporarily closed,” but at our press time, owner Bilal Saleh had not committed to a reopening date or whether or not Zaytoun would reopen with a new name or concept.

Hanaq Prana Yoga To Visit Peru; North Tampa Arts League Has Show In Dunedin By Celeste McLaughlin

A group of women from New Tampa are headed to Peru on Oct. 16 to give students in a disadvantaged, mountainous area of the country laptop computers to enhance their educations. The women are students of Hanaq Prana Yoga Studio, located at 10323 Cross Creek Blvd., Suite E., and the group is led by studio founder and director, Lorena Saavedra Smith, who is a native of Peru. The group will spend a week at the Willa T’ika wellness retreat near Cusco, Peru, and will have a “packed itinerary” of doing yoga, experiencing the local attractions and serving the community. “I’ve been planning this retreat since February,” says Lorena. “It’s a time of self discovery, time to reconnect, and for many of these women, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit such a fascinating country.” She says the 10 available spots for the trip were filled quickly and she has a waiting list of three or four women who will be first to attend next year’s retreat. “We’re going to explore the ruins, enjoy the beautiful scenery, visit the (15th Century Incan citadel) Machu Picchu, taking in all this amazing energy from the mountains,” Lorena says. “Then, the service part is the last day of the retreat, so after we’ve cleansed the

56

body, and taken in the energy, we can serve these kids.” Tony Selvaggio, owner of eSmart Recycling, has provided 10 laptop computers to be donated for the trip. “Tony has an amazing business of keeping old electronics out of landfills,” Lorena says. “Thanks to this donation, students in the small village of Cusco will have the opportunity to succeed academically with the access to technology that this donation of laptops will provide.” For more information, visit HanaqPranaYoga.com.

Works Of Local Artists On Display In Dunedin

A group from the Hanaq Prana Yoga Studio (above, left) is headed to Peru on October 16, and works

produced by the North Tampa Arts League (NTAL) like “Cuban Drummer” will be on display at the “I Did It My Way” exhibit at the Stirling Art Studios & Gallery in Dunedin all month.

Original art created by the members of the North Tampa Arts League (NTAL), which meets at Compton Park in Tampa Palms, are now on display at the Stirling Art Studios & Gallery in Dunedin during the month of October for a members-only show called, “I Did It My Way.” Artists were asked to enter a work they are proud of, that tells their story, who they are, how they see themselves and how they see the world. The show will be judged and prizes — in the form of gift cards ranging from $25 to $100 — will be awarded

by sponsor Blick Art Materials, located at 1502 N. Westshore Blvd. in Tampa. This is the group’s first show at Stirling Gallery, so the artists have the opportunity to present their work to a new audience by their participation. “This show is only open to active (NTAL) members,” says Joan Garcia, one of the League’s founding members. “It’s sort of a thank you to all of those people who have participated in the past year by being active in our organization.” The North Tampa Arts League was

‘Schneider’

Cont. from page 41 World War II veterans, each of whom had to give up their dream to serve in the military during the war. And, another film centers on two sets of parents, one dealing with the death of their son at the hands of the son of the other parents. “It’s really terrific,’’ Schneider says. “It will make you think, it will make you cry, it will make you wonder and somewhere in there, it will make you want to be a better parent.” Schneider understands that even though “The Dukes of Hazzard” went off the air 30 years ago, his star power is still enough to draw people to the festival just to see him. But, he hopes those who do come for that

reason will end up sticking around for the movies themselves. “There will be a tent outside, I’ll be there and so will other filmmakers,’’ he said. “We’ll have some Q-and-As, some music, some private time. This is really for people interested in the process of filmmaking and film distribution what goes into telling a story. Yes, people can come out and bring their ‘Dukes of Hazzard’ lunchbox and that’s fine, but I’m hoping to skew more towards film students and musicians and artists, really, who want to know how it works.” The Neighborhood News is a proud sponsor of the CineFlix Fest, which is scheduled for Mon.-Thur., Oct. 31-Nov. 3, at the Grove 16 & Cinebistro at 6333 Wesley Grove Blvd. For more information, check out CineFlixFest.com, or call Cinebistro at 948-5444.

(L.-r.) John Schneider, Catherine Bach & Tom Wopat starred in “The Dukes of Hazzard.” Schneider is bringing his CineFlix Fest Film Festival to The Grove theaters Oct. 31-Nov. 3.
