If Wesley Chapel Blvd. and the Shops at Wiregrass mall seemed a little emptier than usual a couple of Friday nights ago, it’s probably because a good portion of the town’s population was in the stands at Wesley Chapel High’s Wildcat Stadium for the annual showdown between the ‘Cats and their crosstown rivals, the Bulls of Wiregrass Ranch High.

The growing rivalry between the two Wesley Chapel high schools generates a lot of interest from the fans, and they were treated to a good show as the home ‘Cats (2-1) held off the visiting Bulls (1-2) to earn a 17-14 victory in a battle that wasn’t decided until the closing seconds of the game’s final quarter.

The game kicked off at 7:30 p.m., but even while many fans were still negotiating the filled-to-capacity parking lot, the Wildcats struck first blood with a 76-yard touchdown run by junior running back Davon Henry

slipped off the intended receiver’s fingers and into the hands of WRH cornerback Blake Duce, who returned the ball to the Wildcats’ 2 yard line, and Bulls’ senior RB Nick Lomba plunged into the end zone on the next play to level the score at 7-all.

Second-year WRH coach Jeremy Shobe’s Bulls scored again on a 1-yard QB sneak by James Tringali to go up 14-7 midway through the second quarter, and the ‘Cats responded with a scoring drive featuring alternating carries by Henry and junior RB Devin Piper that was capped off by a 38-yard field goal by Cody Hodgens that closed the gap to 14-10 at halftime.

WCH continued to pound the ball in the second half, and Henry put the ‘Cats ahead for good on a 1-yard scoring run with just over 5 minutes to go in the third quarter. After that, the best the Bulls could do was a 27yard field goal attempt in the fourth quarter, but junior Paul Forsey’s kick fell far short of the crossbar. The See “Rivalry” on page 6.

Last month, I received an anonymous e-mail on our website asking me, “So now, with the economy turning to crap, how do you feel about your endorsement of (President) Obama?”

Well actually, I feel pretty good about it. I’ll admit 2009 was an extremely difficult year, one which saw my company and our publications struggle the way so many local business have and (many) continue to struggle.

But, once we were rid of a few employees who weren’t producing up to their respective income levels and put a few other belt-tightening measures in motion, I have to say that the New Tampa & Wesley Chapel Neighborhood News, respectively, have both having their best years ever!

As you’ve likely noticed, if you’ve been reading our all-direct-mail news magazines for any period of time, the Neighborhood News has been growing steadily since the end of 2009 and this summer — which is usually notoriously slower than the fall, winter or spring year after year — has been our biggest and best summer ever by far.

Our recent success is even more impressive to me because, as you likely know, the publishing business in general continues to shrink. An editorial by Gary Nager and even national news magazines like Newsweek and Time are suffering. Here in the Tampa Bay area, The Tampa Tribune and St. Petersburg Times have both lost millions in advertising revenue and have raised their newsstand prices in an effort to offset those losses. The local dailies also continue to cut employees, so you’re getting less coverage and fewer ads to check out while you’re now being expected to pay 50 or 75 cents a day for what cost just a quarter a couple of short years ago.

But, if you’ve read anything about the publishing biz the last two years, you probably know that “niche” publications like ours are the ones picking up the slack. Even with everyone and their brother trying to make a killing in online advertising sales, the good news for yours truly and my happy crew of dedicated workers is that even though a lot of local businesses have gone out of business, there are still people moving new ventures into many of the previously vacant office and retail spaces — and those folks know they have to promote their businesses to make enough money to keep their doors open.

The even better news is that when those new businesses move into our area, other companies in the same plazas are telling the newcomers that we are the best-known, best-read publication serving New Tampa and Wesley Chapel and, for many, the only one that delivers local advertising results.

The best news of all, however, is that you, our wonderful readers, even those who think they don’t love all of the opinions I express in these editori-

als, very often tell these new businesses that the Neighborhood News is the only local publication you read cover-tocover every time it hits your mailboxes.

Many of you also tell me and my employees the same thing, which we appreciate, but the fact that you ask new business owners why you haven’t seen their ad in this publication is still the strongest sales tool we have — as it has been since the very beginning!

So, even though I may not get to personally thank every reader or even every advertiser who has not only kept

us afloat but allowed us to grow in the face of one of the worst recessions in U.S. history, I did want to take a moment to thank you in these pages.

And yes, our plan is to continue to work hard to improve the Neighborhood News on an ongoing basis, so our readers and advertisers alike can continue to reap the benefits. I certainly can’t attribute our growth directly to President Obama and I know there are still tough times ahead for many of us, but I believe we are heading in the right direction and look forward to 2011.

W ESLEY C HAPEL Hospitals’ Merger Finalized

A proposed merger between University Community Health (UCH) and the Adventist Health System (AHS) is now official, but there is still no word on when the healthcare group will begin work on its newest facility in Wesley Chapel.

The two groups formed a joint venture partnership to build the Wesley Chapel Medical Center, which is planned for a site alongside Bruce B. Downs Blvd. in the Wiregrass Ranch Development of Regional Impact (DRI), in 2007. After their Certificate of Need was approved by the state of Florida, allowing the plans for the 100bed facility to move forward, the two groups announced that they wanted to explore the possibility of an official merger. Now that the merger is complete, the hospitals that formerly operated under the UCH banner – University Community Hospital, University Community Hospital-Carrollwood, the Long Term Acute Care Hospital at Connerton, the Pepin Heart Hospital & Dr. Kiran Patel Research Institute, and the Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital in Tarpon Springs – will form the Tampa Bay region of the AHS, along with Florida Hospital Zephyrhills and the Wesley Chapel Medical Center, once it is built.

The group also announced that John Harding, the current president and CEO of Florida Hospital Zephyrhills, will assume the same position for the region.

“John knows the Tampa Bay community and will provide the leadership experience needed to guide this new region,” said Mike Schultz, president/CEO of the AHS Florida region and vice chairman for the UCH board.

“He embraces medical technology and advancement with an emphasis on quality and safety, all the while nurturing a Christian-based mission of health care delivery. These elements are vital to the future success of these hospitals.”

As part of the merger, AHS agreed to commit $125 million in capital investment, donated $10 million to the UCH Foundation and agreed to take on UCH’s debt and outstanding liabilities.

“I believe patients, employees, physicians and communities will all be blessed by the security and stability provided by this new partnership,” said Don Jernigan, president/CEO of Adventist Health System. “Our goal is to have this transition process be seamless with little to no interruptions to

AHS, which is headquartered in Winter Park, FL, was founded in 1973 and is the largest not-for-profit Protestant health care provider in the U.S., operating 43 hospitals nationwide. A local spokesperson said, however, that there is still no date for the official groundbreaking for the Wesley Chapel Medical Center.

Bank Robbery Spree Ends With Arrest

Police officials say they may have solved as many as six of the recent wave of bank robberies with one arrest.

On September 3, the Largo Police Department issued a press release saying that a Tampa man, Brian Michael McGregor, 24, had been arrested after he allegedly robbed a BB&T bank on Walsingham Rd. According to the release, McGregor had been under surveillance by detectives with the Tampa Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a potential suspect in several bank robberies that took place in Hillsborough and Pasco counties, including a heist at the Bank of America on Amberly Dr. in Tampa Palms on August 30 (photo).

In that case, the suspect entered the bank at 15301 Amberly Dr. shortly after noon. He handed a teller a note implying that he had a gun and was given an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing on foot.

That was the fourth robbery in the span of a week, following on the heels of three others in southern Pasco, at the Regions Bank at 22645 S.R. 54 54 in Land O’ Lakes (near S.R. 54 and Collier Pkwy) and the Synovus Bank at 2145 Cypress Ridge Rd., off S.R. 56 in Wesley Chapel, both on August 24 and another at the Bank of America branch at 22850 S.R. 54 in Land O’Lakes on August 25.

Although the descriptions of the robbers given by witnesses in each case varied, a TPD spokesperson said that their investigation is ongoing, and more details will be released as they emerge. Meanwhile, Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) spokesman Doug Tobin said that his department also was sending a detective to Largo to interview McGregor to try to determine if he was involved in any of the Pasco robberies. At our press time, McGregor had only been charged with the robbery at the BB&T in Largo.

Lisa Couture is legally blind, and she lives directly across Meadow Pointe Blvd. from Double Branch Elementary (DBE). Every day, Couture walks her children to the school, where she also serves as a volunteer, but ever since the opening of S.R. 56 to Meadow Pointe Blvd., she has had to contend with a steady flow of traffic, and many of the drivers never even slow down, she says, even though Florida law requires them to yield to blind people who are carrying a white cane, as she does.

“I wish everyone would put on a blindfold and try to get across there,” Couture said. “Then they might be a little more considerate.”

Couture said that several letters and calls to Pasco County officials went unheeded, until recently, that is, when they finally erected signs telling drivers travelling in both directions on Meadow Pointe Blvd. to watch out for a “visually impaired pedestrian.” The speed limit in that area is also reduced from 45 mph to 35 mph, and there are other signs showing drivers’ speed and warning them to watch out for school children. In addition, at least on one of the days when we went through, there was a Pasco County Sheriff’s Office deputy stationed alongside the roadway about a quartermile south of the school, presumably watching for speeders.

Although Pasco County officials did not respond to our requests for a comment, they are supposedly in the process of conducting traffic studies to determine if a full traffic signal is warranted at the intersection of Meadow Pointe Blvd. and Chancey Rd., which leads to the school. According to DBE principal Peggy Lewis, approximately 30-40 students cross Meadow Pointe Blvd. every day before and after school, but so far there haven’t been any accidents there. — GN

Sneezing? Itching? Watery Eyes? Could Be You’re Allergic

By Michael Smith If it seems like more and more of those medication ads that you see in magazines and on TV are for products that treat allergies and allergy-related problems, there may be a good reason.

Allergies are the sixth-leading cause of chronic disease in the U.S., and cost the health care system around $18 billion annually, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI). Statistics from the National Institutes of Health indicate that as many as 50 million Americans are affected by some kind of allergic disease, which may include hay fever, asthma, eczema, sinusitis and others, as well as allergies to food, medication or other substances.

A 2005 study showed that more than half of all Americans had positive reactions to at least one of the 10 most common allergens - ragweed, Bermuda grass, rye grass, white oak, Russian thistle, alternaria mold, cats, house dust mites, German cockroaches and peanuts. The most common food allergens are cow’s milk, eggs, shellfish and nuts, with peanuts and tree nuts being responsible for the most fatal

An allergic reaction is actually an overreaction by the body’s immune system, in which the body’s defenses mistakenly identify something that would normally be considered harmless as something harmful. That sets off a chain of events that result in symptoms that can range from the merely uncomfortable — i.e., sneezing, coughing, itching, etc. — to potentially fatal, as in the constriction of the airwaves during anaphylactic shock, which is an extreme allergic reaction.

Lockey says that the severity of the reaction depends upon how you were exposed to the substance and how much of it you were exposed to. ”A little bit of allergen goes a long way,” he says. “For example, just a little bit of penicillin can kill you, if you’re allergic to it.”

Since many of the symptoms of allergies can mimic the symptoms of more common ailments, such as a

cold, it can be hard to tell when a person is actually suffering from an allergy.

When those symptoms persist, however, or recur at specific times, then it’s probably time to consult an allergy specialist.

The most common way to determine if a person is allergic to something is to place a small particle of the substance on the person’s arm and then prick the skin, which allows the substance to enter the body. Reactions can occur quickly, or may take several hours, but once an allergy has been positively identified, then treatment can begin.

In the case of food or allergies to other substances, the easiest way to avoid a reaction is to avoid the substance whenever possible.

Alternatively, if the substance is something that is impossible to avoid, such as pollen, or dust (or a favorite pet), then allergists can desensitize the body to that substance over time, by injecting increasing amounts of the substance into the patient. Dr. Lockey says the process can take months or even years, and some allergies never go away, but some patients respond better than others.

Also, thanks in part, at least, to Lockey and his associates at USF, there are many more alternatives to ongoing

treatment, like all of those prescription and non-prescription medications that you’ve seen advertised. The USF Clinical Research Unit has been instrumental in testing many of those popular brand names that you now see on your pharmacist’s shelves, and researchers are currently experimenting with nanoparticles – which are too small to be seen with the naked eye – and their potential for healing allergies and other ailments on a microscopic level. The department also is looking at ways that some other diseases can trigger allergic responses, and how some other conditions can make allergies worse.

Dr. Lockey says the implications of all that research are far-reaching, too. Besides making advances in the treatment of allergies and asthma, immunological discoveries also have led to advances in the development of vaccines, bone marrow and organ transplantation, and therapies for a wide variety of diseases, including Hodgkin’s lymphoma (a prevalent type of cancer) and others.

In fact, Dr. Lockey believes that every illness has some sort of immunological aspect, which is why he finds the field so fascinating, and part of the reason why he chose it as a specialty in the first place, along with the fact that his father also worked in the field.

“I always believed that immunology would revolutionize health care, and now it is, in ways we never could have imagined before,” he says.

Local Working Mom Receives St. Leo University Scholarship In today’s tough economic climate, more people are choosing to go back to college, to refresh their skills, learn a new profession, or just help give themselves an edge in finding a job in an ever-more-competitive workplace.

But, going back to school can be tough, especially if you are a single parent with two dependent children. It takes determination, dedication and, of course, the cost of even a two-year degree can be substantial.

However, one local mom is on the way to achieving her dream of going back to school with the help of a program called “Project Working Mom 2010,” which provided her with a fulltuition scholarship that will allow her get a degree online offered by St. Leo University near Dade City.

Susan Martin, 34, says that when she moved to Wesley Chapel from Connecticut following her divorce a few years ago, she was looking to make a new start in her life, both for herself and for her daughter Kassandra and son Jacob. Her plan was to go back to school to earn a degree so she could go into teaching. After being approved for a financial aid loan at St. Leo, she began attending classes in May 2009.

Show” that mentioned the Project Working Mom program, which is sponsored by EducationDynamics, a marketing and technology services company that helps to match students with online educational resources. Through Project Working Mom 2010, the company will award nearly $5 million in scholarships that will allow more than 280 students from around the country to attend online classes ranging from certificate programs to the Ph.D. level.

To be eligible to receive a scholarship, all prospective students have to do is fill out an application and submit an essay telling the program administrators about their goals and how receiving an online education could help them achieve those goals.

In her essay, Martin talked about the difficulties she faced after her divorce, including bankruptcy and the

foreclosure of her home, and how going back to school not only helped improve her self confidence, but also her relationship with her children.

“I had never imagined that I would be able to do this,” she wrote. “I thought after I had my children, my time for school had passed. But here I am and, on top of feeling better about making a better future for myself and my kids, I feel that my children’s outlook on college has changed as well.”

Martin says school is going so well that she made the Dean’s List this spring. She is working to earn her Asso-

ciate’s degree in Liberal Arts, and says that the Project Working Mom scholarship will help her to not only finish that degree but also assist her in her goal of becoming an English teacher.

WCH Grad’s Documentary Receives Top Honors A documentary film by 2010 Wesley Chapel High (WCH) graduate Joshua Lane has been named among the top three finishers in the prestigious Jim Harbin Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME) student film competition.

The documentary, entitled “The Road to Respect,” chronicles the rise of the St. Leo University lacrosse program and also was named as the best student documentary in the Pasco County-level student film competition for 2009-10.

It also won Lane first place in the Region 4 student film competition. The final announcement for the winner of the FAME competition will be made in November.

Lane, 18, who is now a freshman at the University of Florida, says that he became interested in film after joining the WCH TV production program in the ninth grade. He produced sports highlights for the in-school television program, and, inspired by his brother, who was a member of the St. Leo lacrosse team, shot his first documentary about the WCH lacrosse program in 2008. That film earned second place in the state that year, and Lane followed

White Tiger Cub From Dade City’s Wild Things Visits Petsmart

By Gary Nager As a kid and true animal lover growing up in New York, I was lucky to live so close to the American Museum of Natural History, as well as the Bronx and Central Park zoos. Here in the New Tampa/Wesley Chapel area, especially for those who love big cats like lions, tigers, ocelots and Florida panthers, we have even more great places we can visit for up-close animal experiences — Lowry Park Zoo, Busch Gardens, Big Cat Rescue in Citrus Park and a place I had never even heard of until a couple of weeks ago, Dade City’s Wild Things.

I first heard about this non-profit, fully accredited zoo and wildlife rescue center when I got a phone call from Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC) executive director David West, who said that the Chamber was sponsoring a visit by the 9-weekold white tiger cub from Wild Things at the Petsmart store located in The Grove at Wesley Chapel shopping center earlier this month. The truly beautiful (and rambunctious!) cub named Diamond (you might even call her a Diamond in the rough!) was coming to Petsmart to pick out her first diamondstudded collar (O.K., the diamonds aren’t real, but it sounds better for the story) and to let Petsmart shoppers in Wesley Chapel know that Dade City’s Wild Things has lots of great animal exhibits less than 30 minutes away,

some of which are interactive opportunities to tryuly get to know the animals personally.

At the 22-acre Dade City’s Wild Things, you can get up close not only with Diamond, but also with a Florida panther cub, a baby snow monkey, lions, bears, alligators, otters and 170 different kinds of animals in total, and now, the zoo is even approved for a “Swim with the Animals” encounter that will allow you to get in the water with Diamond herself! There’s an extra fee for all up-close encounters with the animals, but the regular admission of $22.95 (10-percent off for those age 55 and older) or $12.95 for children ages 2-12.

The WCCC’s West said he was proud for the Chamber to have a relationship with “the closest zoo to Wesley Chapel” and that he hoped “there can be additional community outreach programs like this one in the near future.”

He added that he would try to arrange for Dade City’s Wild Things to have an exhibit of some sort at the upcoming Wesley Chapel Fall Festival (formerly the Arts & Crafts Show), although Diamond will probably be too big to be handled by Miss Wild Things 2010 Harley Redditt, who not only attended the appearance at Petsmart, but also got to give Diamond her bottle feeding!

The Miss Wild Things Pageant is an annual beauty pageant that qualifies the age 16-18 winner to compete for Miss Florida. The pageant, which is

held in April each year, is available to girls ages 2-18, with six different age groups, and you do not have to be a Dade City resident to participate.

Despite construction on Bruce B. Bella Vita — It’s Not Circles, But It Is Great Italian Food!

By Gary Nager As you long-time readers know, it was as hard for me as it was for many of you to say goodbye to the former Circles New Tampa Bistro in the Pebble Creek Collection.
