New Tampa & Wesley Chapel Chambers Of Commerce To Join Forces On Friday, July 25, as we were going to press with our August 2 Wesley Chapel issue, we received the following email from Hope Allen, the executive director of the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC): “Board members of the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce and the President of the New Tampa Chamber of Commerce met recently to discuss the idea of merging the two Chambers to better serve the business community of the Wesley Chapel and New Tampa areas.” The Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors has appointed a task force to explore the logistics and benefit of “joining forces” and conducting a due-diligence review. “While discussions are still in their infancy, they are progressing. We are always interested in reviewing partnerships that enhance our business community,” says Allen. “After the task force completes its review, the next step is to engage a broader pool of people in the discussion, including current Chamber members and community leaders.” New Tampa Chamber president Neil

Heird says, “As the New Tampa/Wesley Chapel area continues its growth and economic expansion, I began wondering how we might expand to offer the type of support our business community needs. With so many smaller Chambers in and around the North Tampa area, all working independently of one another, I just didn’t see the true value in that approach, especially given the proximity of New Tampa to Wesley Chapel. In general, I believe that our areas have several aspects of overlap, so I reached out to Hope Allen to explore the possibility of merging our two Chambers. I think we both can be stronger together than we are separately — and we both realized our business communities have a lot in common — so it only made sense to consider joining together. We are excited about the potential a merger like this might offer and I look forward to continuing the process.” “We believe this is a potential opportunity to build a strong organization, focused on membership development, community development and economic development in the New Tampa/Wesley Chapel area,” Allen says. “We are completing all of the due-diligence review to ensure this would benefit both organizations and our members.”

Tim Hancock of IL2C HIM, Inc., Music Management (a proud member of the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce), is proud to present the first-ever Wesley Chapel Jazz festival on Saturday, August 30, noon-9 p.m., at Wesley Chapel District Park (7727 Boyette Rd.). This free (there is a charge for VIP seating), fun, inaugural event for Wesley Chapel will bring together a variety of outstanding jazz musicians, from the smooth jazz styl-

ings of Hancock’s own group, international recording artist Abnique, to dixieland and so much more. Hancock, who previously has put on jazz events in Dade City, Zephyrhills and Plant City, promises that the Wesley Chapel Jazz Festival will feature a unique variety of quality musical entertainment all day long, with food and beverage vendors on site, the aforementioned VIP seating area and a truly family-friendly atmosphere.

Two Ways The Internet Can Help Those Who Help Others

An editorial by Gary Nager Although I am incredibly proud of the work that we do and the ways we’ve always been able to help small, local business succeed in and around our distribution areas, I will gladly admit that when it comes to helping worthy nonprofit organizations (who always really need whatever donations they can pull together in order to survive) — and there are too many of them working in our area to name here — our track record isn’t great. But, that’s not because we haven’t been trying. Every year, whether in this space or in the hundreds of news stories, Community Calendar items and even ads about these wonderful organizations we run, rarely have I heard from those folks that we were able to help them raise a lot of money. What I hear most is that we, “definitely helped raise awareness of our organization (and/or event), but we don’t really know how much of what we raised is attributable to what you did to help us. But, thank you so much for trying.” Of course, when I first purchased the Neighborhood News in 1994, there was no such thing as the internet. And, until the last 3-5 years or so, no one was able to use the web to raise money for their charitable efforts or nonprofit organizations. But, one good result of our digital world has been that nonprofit organizations and charities around the world have been brought together with supporters in ways previously thought impossible and — despite a world

full of faceless scammers online — there are legitimate ways these days to use the internet to help those who help others in need to raise money to keep themselves and their organizations in business. So, when two people I’ve known for years, from two totally different types of nonprofits (with totally different missions) came to me to discuss what they were doing to help fund their respective organizations, I knew I wanted to try to help them both.

Vote For Starting Right, Now!

Although we’ve only met a few times, I have known Starting Right, Now (SRN) founder and Tampa Palms resident Vicki Sokolik for about as long as I’ve been in business. Starting Right, Now is the program Sokolik started five years ago to try to meet the needs of the homeless families and children in Hillsborough County. “We intervene in a uniquely holistic way for our clients,” says the SRN website (StartingRightNow.org). “We take our students to tour college campuses or vocational programs, fill out the applications, complete the essays and even help with their financial aid and scholarships. SRN is ending homelessness, one child at a time.” Vicki recently emailed me with a press release/request to help SRN win a $350,000 grant to help fund the expansion of this unique organization. SRN can win a $350,000 Communities Benefit grant from the Humana Foundation, but they need your help. From the moment you receive this issue in your mailbox through Friday, August 22, you can vote daily for SRN at HumanaHCBVote.com. The results of the online vote will account for 20 percent of the organization’s total score during the final round of judging, which will occur later this month, when each finalist will get to present its program proposal to a panel of community leader judges and, in September, Humana will announce the $350,000 grant recipient for 2014.

Over the course of the last few months, however, Ace (whose name may be familiar to you because he also used to own Uncle Bo’s BBQ on S.R. 54 in Wesley Chapel, and his Ace in the Hole Van Service that we have advertised in these pages) has been telling me about a new, non-emergency medical transport business venture that he and his wife, Tina have started because of Tina’s ongoing health issues since she suffered the first of three strokes in 2007. Acie and Tina are trying to kick off their nonprofit — called 1st Care Non-Emergency Medical Transport — through a website known as GoFundMe.com. 1st Care’s goal is to provide safe, reliable, and timely assisted passenger transportation to those who are unable to provide or secure transportation independently. And, Acie and Tina’s vision is to become our community’s transporta-

tion provider of choice, servicing the assisted transportation needs of area hospitals, nursing facilities, doctor offices, senior centers, independent living seniors, and physically challenged persons. In just a few weeks of being on the site, 1st Care already has raised close to $1,000 with little or no other promotion (GoFundMe.com keeps 5% of all donations to the thousands of nonprofits on its site). When you visit, you can watch Acie & Tina’s video detailing how 1st Care works, as well as testimonials from their friends and supporters, including a certain news magazine publisher. To make donations & find out more, visit GoFundMe.com/1stcarenemt. Oh, and please, don’t forget to vote in this year’s Primary Election on Tuesday, August 26. Some officials, including judges, will be elected during this election!

Please ‘Go Fund’ Acie & Tina!

I have only known Acie Jenkins for maybe five years, as we met when he was working for a local car service and gave me a ride home from the Shops at Wiregrass mall.

Caetano Challenges Montelione In Effort To Regain City Council Seat

By Matt Wiley Nearly four years after losing his seat on the Tampa City Council, long-time New Tampa resident Joseph Caetano hopes to regain the District 7 seat at the 2015 City of Tampa municipal elections in March. According to the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections website, on June 27, Caetano officially filed to run against current Dist. 7 Tampa City Council member Lisa Montelione, who also has filed to run for re-election. Caetano’s platform? More New Tampa money spent in New Tampa. “I’m of the opinion that District 7 contributes about 13-14 percent of the city’s ad valorem taxes,” Caetano explains. “But, we get nothing up here (in New Tampa).” Caetano, 80, previously served on the Tampa City Council from 2007-11, before being unseated by Montelione. He says that he is upset that for yet another year, the funding for the expansion of the nearly 20,000-sq.-ft. New Tampa Recreation Center (located on Commerce Park Blvd. in Tampa Palms) is absent in Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn’s proposed budget. The 14,000- sq.-ft., $1.5-million addition to the facility was first proposed in 2012, but was shelved due to a lack of funding. “We’re being cheated,” Caetano says. “We’re a cash cow for downtown.” Caetano has long had a passion for public safety. He says that he will rally for other issues that have gone unre-

solved in our area, especially along County Line Rd., which makes sense, as he is a resident of the Grand Hampton community. Caetano says that he has tried unsuccessfully to draw attention to the conditions along the road that separates New Tampa Joseph Caetano from Wesley Chapel. He has appeared at City Council meetings and remained in contact with representatives from both Hillsborough and Pasco counties, as each entity also has a stake in the road. Most important, Caetano says that he wants to see streetlights added along the busy two-lane road. “If you ever drive down County Line Rd. at night, there’s no where for people to walk, the grass is never mowed and you can’t see anything,” Caetano says. “It’s dangerous.” Since the City annexed 148 acres of New Tampa land behind Paul R. Wharton High for a new Taylor Morrison housing community that will include an estimated 425 single-family homes with the only access point through The Hammocks community at County Line Rd., Caetano says that the problem will only get worse. Another issue Caetano says he sees a problem with in the area is the lack of a

new fire station along County Line Rd. “When I was on the Council, we spent $2 million in 2008 to buy land for a new fire station,” Caetano explains, adding that nothing has been constructed on the land since. He says he also plans to address the flooding issues he’s noticed along Tampa Palms Blvd. near Olive Garden. As far as not being re-elected in 2011, Caetano says that voter turnout hurt his chances most. “People in New Tampa didn’t vote,” he says. “That’s why I’m getting an early start. I’m planning on using the internet and Youtube a lot in my campaign.” Caetano gathered just 1,149 votes

We accept the majority of PPO’s Dental Insurance

(19.25 percent) in 2011, defeated by both Charles “Charlie” Perkins (31.8 percent of the vote) and Montelione with 35.89 percent of the ballots cast. But, Caetano says he hasn’t wasted time since being unseated, even helping to get a 30-second pedestrian yield signal installed at the busy intersection of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. and Cross Creek Blvd. “(If elected), I’m going to do something for the people of New Tampa,” Caetano says. “I’m not going to be down there for myself. I’m going to work hard to get things done. I love and enjoy (being on the City Council).” Councilwoman Montelione could not be reached for comment.

Florida Hospital Tampa Donates $2 Million To MOSI For IMAX Upgrades

By Matt Wiley If it’s better to give than to receive, then Florida Hospital Tampa (FHT, formerly University Community Hospital) is at the top of its game, as the hospital located on E. Fletcher Ave. at Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. recently made a hefty gift to the Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI). Located just a few miles south of New Tampa on E. Fowler Ave. (across from the University of South Florida’s Tampa campus), MOSI provides seasonal exhibits and educational entertainment for adults and kids. And, a new business relationship with FHT is poised to take those experiences to a whole new level. According to a July 25 press release, FHT (which is part of the Adventist Health System, which operates 45 hospitals in ten U.S. states, including FHT and Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel) presented MOSI with a $2-million check to, “keep the science center moving forward and to help convert the (museum’s) IMAX dome theatre to state-of-the-art digital technology.” The conversion from film will make MOSI’s theater, which already is the only dome theater in the state, one of the first science centers in the U.S. to convert to a digital platform. “This partnership is the result of a strategic relationship that we have been building with Florida Hospital

for more than a year, and their transformational gift will help change the lives of millions of Florida residents,” said Molly Demeulenaere, MOSI’s VP of Growth, in the release. “A relationship like this creates endless possibilities for the future of MOSI, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) education and the Tampa Bay community. By moving to a digital 3D format, we will be able to offer more movies that will attract additional and new visitors to MOSI, which is an important revenue source that will help with the long-term sustainability of the museum.” Following the conversion, the theater officially will be known as the Florida Hospital IMAX Dome Theatre. “The IMAX Dome Theatre is an impressive and significant experience for our visitors and has enabled us to take millions of our guests to places they never dreamed possible – from the deepest part of the ocean to the outer reaches of space,” said MOSI president/CEO Wit Ostrenko in the release. “We are excited to be partnering with Florida Hospital to continue bringing amazing IMAX experiences to the Tampa Bay community.” In addition to the theater’s name change, the press release says that the relationship between the two organizations will help facilitate the creation of a unique new program called

“Florida Hospital Presents Live SX,” a first-of-its-kind partnership between a hospital and a science center in the state. The program will create an interactive experience, during which Florida Hospital surgeons will perform routine surgeries that will be broadcast live in MOSI’s Coleman Science Works Theater for middle school, high school and college students. The experience is designed to pique students’ interest in a friendly environment where they can ask questions. The release also says that the partnership will focus on creating more new programs, enhancing existing science education and advancing

public interest, knowledge and the understanding of science, industry and technology. In 1982, MOSI opened to the community and is now the largest science center in the Southeast and the eighth largest in the nation. It’s also the only institution with the focus of experiential STEAM education in the Tampa Bay region. MOSI also is home to MOSI Partnership School, which received an ‘A’ grade this year from the Florida Department of Education. (Find out New Tampa’s school grades on page 35). New Tampa Fire In The Promenade Displaces Family

A fire has left a Tampa Palms family without a home. According to Tampa Fire Rescue (TFR), a call was received around 9:30 a.m. on August 6 about smoke and flames coming from an apartment building in the Promenade At Tampa Palms apartment complex, located off Compton Dr. TFR reports that the first trucks arrived at 9:35 a.m. and immediately began attacking the fire that originated on the third floor of one of the three-story apartment buildings. Additional units were called to make sure the fire, which was put out by 10:30 a.m., didn’t spread. No one was injured in the blaze. A family of four (two adults and two children) has been displaced because of the fire and the American Red Cross has been notified to aid the family in finding a place to stay.

‘Suspicious Man’ Charged With Attempted Kidnapping

The ‘suspicious man’ reported at Hampton Park in Tampa Palms has been arrested and charged with attempted kidnapping. TPD reports that, at around 1:30 p.m. on August 4, a woman was at Hampton Park (16311 Tampa Palms Blvd. West) with her two children. The woman, an Enclave resident, told police that while she was at the park, a suspicious man – later identified as James Wood, 22, of the Manchester community in Tampa Palms – walked up behind her and grabbed James Wood her shoulder. When she was grabbed, the victim screamed, which caught the attention of the park’s security guard. The guard witnessed the suspect chasing the victim and chased the suspect into a heavily wooded, swampy area. The guard lost the suspect, but instructed someone to call 9-1-1. TPD responded with officers, a K-9 unit and a search helicopter to canvas the area.

8

News Briefs TPD located and made contact with the suspect just before 1 a.m. on August 5. After further investigation, TPD reports that Wood attempted to grab the victim’s infant from her arms, but she was able to get away. Wood has been charged with felony attempted kidnapping and, at our press time, was still being held in the Hillsborough County jail without bond.

Ponce On CNN’s ‘The Hunt’

Nearly two years after killing a Wesley Chapel resident in a drunk driving wrongway accident, the Tampa man identified by law enforcement officials as being responsible for the crash still is on the loose, and recently was featured on CNN’s “The Hunt” TV show. Aired on August 3, “The Hunt” — a show that highlights some of the mostwanted fugitives in the U.S. — was broadcast nationwide in hopes that someone will recognize and help lead authorities to discovering the whereabouts of 24-year-old Tampa resident Christopher Ponce. Ponce originally was arrested on July 19, 2012, for driving under the influence and traveling north in the southbound lanes of I-275 near downtown Tampa in a 2012 Ford Christopher Fusion, just south of the Ponce I-4 interchange. Ponce struck a 2000 Ford Mustang driven by William Brooks Angel, 20, of Wesley Chapel, who was traveling with two other passengers. As a result of the collision, Angel sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. His passengers also sustained serious injuries, but recovered. Ponce was arrested and charged with DUI, DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, DUI with serious bodily injury and reckless driving. He was being monitored with an ankle bracelet, but reportedly removed it on May 9 and skipped town. In May, the U.S. Marshals Office announced a $5,000 reward for any information leading to Ponce’s arrest. The U.S. Marshals Office says that Ponce could be anywhere in the U.S., or even beyond.

The agency urges anyone who comes into contact with him not to try to apprehend him, but (if in or near Tampa) to call 415-1967. More information about the case can be found at FindChrisPonce.com, a website started by Angel’s family to spread awareness about the fugitive.

Wesley Chapel Mother, Infant Killed In I-4 Crash

A Wesley Chapel woman and infant have died, following an early morning crash on I-4 near Tampa. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), Ruben Molina, 29, of Wesley Chapel, was driving a 2008 Hyundai Entourage van westbound on I-4 around 1:12 a.m. on August 3, when he lost control of the vehicle and traveled off the interstate, west of County Road 579. The FHP report says that the van drove over the shoulder and across a concrete culvert, before traveling up a grass embankment and through a chain link fence. The van flipped over several times and finally landed on its left side. The front seat passenger, Wesley Chapel resident Amanda Lynn Osborn, 30, was ejected from the van and died at the scene, the report says. Osborn and Molina’s five-month-old daughter, Madilyna Molina, was transported to Tampa General Hospital (TGH), but later died from her injuries as well. Two boys, Elija Molina, 9, and Ruben Molina, 7, also were taken to TGH in critical condition. Molina and a female passenger — identified as Ruben’s sister, Marialena Molina, 26, also of Wesley Chapel — sustained minor injuries and also were taken to TGH. It has been determined that alcohol was not a factor in the crash and that no one involved in the incident was wearing a seat belt or in a child restraint seat, including the 10-month-old. Anyone with any information about this case is urged to call FHP at 631-4020.

find out that you’re not alone. One New Tampa family didn’t have to imagine this scenario. Luckily, an arrest was made in their case. According to the Tampa Police Department (TPD), a Hunter’s Green couple arrived home from a local grocery store on July 25 around 1:10 p.m. to find three suspects in their home, one of which was carrying a Playstation game console from their daughter’s bedroom. The suspects had entered by forcing open a window on the side of the house. The husband yelled and chased the suspects, catching the attention of a nearby roofer, the TPD report said, who also assisted in the chase. The suspects hopped into a “blacked out” Chevrolet sedan with large black rims and tinted windows being driven by another suspect and fled. Once reported, the vehicle was spotted traveling north on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., north of Cross Creek Blvd. TPD reports that officers used a “boxin” technique to trap the vehicle and take the driver, John Michael Parrish, 30, of Tampa, into custody. Parrish since has been released on a $9,500 bond after being charged with grand theft and burglary of an unoccupied dwelling. John Parrish The identities of the three other suspects were still unknown at our press time, as the investigation was still ongoing. No additional information was available at our press time. — MW

Weapons, Drugs, EBT Cards Taken In Massive Bust In Wesley Chapel By Matt Wiley The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) has made a major drug and weapons bust in Wesley Chapel. According to PCSO, during the past 14 months, deputies have been investigating Mark Eisenberg, 55, of 29341 Laughridge Pl. in the Citrus Trace community off S.R. 54. Eisenberg also owns Carpet Outlet, located at 5527 Gall Blvd. in Zephyrhills. PCSO originally received a tip from a Zephyrhills business owner in May of 2013, saying that there appeared to be a large amount of narcotics activity occurring at the Carpet Outlet. PCSO worked in collaboration with the Zephyrhills Police Department (ZPD) as more tips were received about drug activity, both at Eisenberg’s home and at his place of business. The two law enforcement agencies conducted undercover operations at each location, during which time it was witnessed that Eisenberg conducted his narcotics transactions while armed. Eisenberg also was witnessed exchanging narcotics for stateissued Food Stamp EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) cards. The investigation began in September and wrapped up on July 25, when Eisenberg was arrested, along with his live-in girlfriend Joyce Stafford, 49, also of Wesley Chapel. Two children, one Eisenberg’s own sevenyear-old son and the other an eight-year-old relative, also were found in the home when it was raided. At our press time, the two children were in state custody. During the couple’s arrest, PCSO

Three Rolex watches, various gift cards, 12 EBT cards issued to other people, jewelry, $3,300 in U.S. currency, a 1999 GMC van and a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado truck also were seized. Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco said in a July 29 press conference that Eisenberg would seek out addicts and drive them to doctor appointments that he scheduled and paid for, after which he would take a portion of the pills the doctor prescribed and sell them on the street, out of his car. “Eisenberg had no problem sitting in the car with his child and selling prescription pills,” Sheriff Nocco said. Investigators said that Eisenberg also bartered pills for the Food Stamp cards. Nocco said that the tip from the aforementioned local business owner ultimately led to the arrests.

prodol, Alprazolam, and marijuana, as well as battery on law enforcement officers. Economic crimes detectives arrested Eisenberg for two counts of possession of personal issued ID based on the EBT cards discovered. He remains in custody at the Land O’Lakes Detention Center in lieu of a $674,000 bond. In order to get out of jail on bond, Eisenberg will have to verify to a Pasco County judge that any bond money he attempts to post is not money made from illegal drug sales. Stafford was charged with possession of amphetamines, felony possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. She since has been released on a $7,150 bond. The investigation is ongoing.

New Tampa Rotary Club Donates $30,000 To Local Charities By Matt Wiley For nonprofit organizations, passion and good-hearted gestures can only go so far and accomplish so much. Many times, the generosity of donors is sometimes the main fuel for the fire that keeps a charity afloat. Luckily, there also are organizations like the New Tampa Rotary Club, which recently made a sizable donation to several local charities. During the June 20 New Tampa Rotary Club breakfast meeting at the Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club (we didn’t get the info in time for our last issue), the organization donated more than $30,000, split between 20 different area charities. “This (charity check distribution) is a day we all look forward to with anticipation; it’s the highlight of our club year,” said outgoing Rotary Club of New Tampa president Peter Gambacorta in a press release. “Our club members work extremely hard all year with our various fund-raising projects. Thankfully, we get to see the fruition of our efforts to help others who are less fortunate, by demonstrating the Rotary motto of ‘Service Above Self.’” Among the charities that received checks this year are Feeding America Tampa Bay, the Fisher House at the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital (located on Bruce B. Downs {BBD} Blvd., across from the University of South Florida’s Tampa campus), the Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel Foundation, the Freedom High School Naval Junior ROTC, God’s Pedal Power Ministry, the Gulf Ridge Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Helping Hands Pantry, Interact Club at Freedom High, Mort Elementary (located on E. Bearss Ave.), the New Tampa Family YMCA (located on Compton Dr. in Tampa Palms), the OASIS Network of New Tampa, Operation Helping Hand, Inc., Osher Lifelong Learning Center at USF, Quantum Leap Farm, Inc., Rotaract Club of Keiser University, Rotaract Club of the University of South Florida, Rotary’s Camp Florida, Rotary Club of Harare in Zimbabwe, Africa, Support the Troops, Inc., and the USF Diabetes Education Department. “It is wonderful to receive a donation from the New Tampa Rotary Club!,” said OASIS Network of New Tampa executive director Ginger Bean. “(The New Tampa Rotary is) one of OASIS’ oldest and most

of New Tampa also sponsored the “Dog Days of Summer – A Bare Bones Concert” on August 10 at Primrose Park in Tampa Palms. The concert featured acoustic, classic rock and folk artists to benefit the New Tampa Rotary Dog Park, a collaborative project between the club and the City of Tampa. New Tampa Rotary officials say that the plan is to break ground on the new dog park in Tampa Palms this fall. Area musical artists Pamela Jo Hatley, Bob Thompson and Sam Osborne were set to perform at the no-frills shindig. The festivities also included “Strut Your Mutt” contests between acts, including Best Tail Wagger, Best Costume, Best Kisser and Best Trick. Keep an eye out for a recap of the concert and the four-legged cuteness in our next issue. The proposed New Tampa Rotary Dog Park will feature fenced areas for both large and small dogs, with beautiful mature shade trees and grass all around. Drinking fountains and waste disposal will be provided, as well as park benches for owners. To finance the dog park, the Rotary Club of New Tampa has embarked on a brick paver fund-raising campaign that will be matched by the City of Tampa. The club’s goal is to raise $25,000 to build a premier dog park for area residents. A Briter Smile Offers Quality Dental Care For New Tampa! By Celeste McLaughlin

With a convenient location where Wesley Chapel and New Tampa meet, a bright and spotless office and an incredibly friendly staff, A Briter Smile Dental Care is waiting to help you care for your teeth and have your best smile ever. Dr. Saied Shayes, D.M.D. (Doctor of Dental Medicine), and Dr. Azita Eskandari, D.D.S. (Doctor of Dental Surgery), are a husband-and-wife team who have been treating patients for 10 years at their office in Trinity, called Trinity Dental Care. They opened their New Tampa office in 2011, located in the office plaza off Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. at County Line Rd., just south of the entrance to the Meadow Pointe I subdivision. Dr. Eskandari received a B.S. degree in Biology from the University of Maryland in College Park in 1993 and her D.D.S. degree from Howard University in Washington, DC, in 1997. She says she came to Tampa to complete a residency with the Hillsborough County Dental Research Clinic and enjoyed Florida so much she decided to stay. She worked in both nonprofit and corporate dentistry before going into private practice with her husband, opening their Trinity location in 2004. Dr. Shayes received his D.D.S. degree in 1995 from Shiraz University School of Dental Medicine in Iran (this program included his undergraduate training). He then received his D.M.D. degree from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lau-

derdale in 2000, before entering private practice. “Our practice feels like a family,” says Dr. Eskandari. “Everyone in our office is cross-trained so that we can all help each and every patient with their dental care and insurance questions.” One patient who loves this approach is Natalie Smith, who has lived in Tampa Palms since she moved to the area in 2012. A breast cancer survivor, Smith says that she had neglected her teeth while undergoing cancer treatments. In May, she saw an ad for A Briter Smile in the New Tampa Neighborhood News and decided to give A Briter Smile a try. “My teeth were in bad shape,” Natalie says. “I wanted to get back on track with dental care and needed an excellent dentist to help me maintain my teeth. I had an old bridge that needed to be replaced and needed extensive work. It was very appealing to me that they would use nitrous oxide gas to help me feel more comfortable with the initial procedures. If anyone fears the dentist or has pain, (the dentists at A Briter Smile) are wonderful about working with you to make you feel comfortable.” Dr. Eskandari explains, “We use nitrous gas when patients are seriously frightened of going to a dental office. It helps the patient relax, but they still feel like they are in control and aren’t completely sedated. Many people have a fear of the unknown, but once they get comfortable, many of them find that they don’t need the

nitrous gas anymore.” That’s what happened with Natalie. “They are nurturing, caring and compassionate, and put me at ease to address my needs,” she says. And the best part? “My teeth look beautiful now,” says Natalie. “They’ve never looked this good.” Natalie adds that she highly recommends A Briter Smile. “The office is clean and in an excellent location,” she says. “I drive by several dentists to get to them, but it’s worth the extra five min- Dr. Saied Shayes and Dr. Azita Eskandari invite you to visit A utes on the road to see Dr. Briter Smile Dental Care on BBD Blvd., just south of County Shayes and Dr. Eskandari. So, if you haven’t been to the dentist in a while and want to try a new office or need a second opinion, A Briter Smile offers a new patient special of just $39.99 for a comprehensive exam and X-Rays, with the coupon from the ad on page 9. Let Dr. Shayes and Dr. Eskandari show you that they’re the friendliest dentists around.

“We understand that not every patient ‘clicks’ with every office,” says Dr. Eskandari. “So, we want to offer an easy way for people to give us a try without an expensive treatment.” A Briter Smile Dental Care is located at 20729 Center Oak Dr., Unit 108, just south of the corner of BBD and County Line Rd. New Tampa Chiropractic & Injury Center Wants To End Your Pain By Amy Gutierrez

At long last, more and more healthconscious people are embracing what the chiropractic health care community has been advocating for years. By focusing on the complex relationship between the nervous system and the spine, chiropractic treatment can restore the structural integrity of the spine and improve the overall health of an individual, says William Scheu, D.C. (Doctor of Chiropractic), the clinic director at New Tampa Chiropractic & Injury Center (located in the Cypress Ridge Professional Park, off S.R. 56 in Wesley Chapel). Dr. Scheu and his staff are excited to help you be the healthiest you possible. Dr. Scheu grew up with the philosophy of health and wholeness through noninvasive treatment, as both his father and grandfather, too, were licensed chiropractors. Dr. Scheu says he used to help out in his father (Dr. Edward Scheu, III)’s chiropractic office in New Port Richey, where he saw the success that the patients who came to see his father had dealing with a variety of physical ailments, and he says he was impressed with his dad’s ability to treat them successfully — in a natural way. “Seeing people getting well with a guy using primarily his hands — without the use of medications — was pretty significant to me,” says the third-generation chiropractor. “I knew it was what I wanted to do with my life, too.”

24

You might say it’s in his blood to improve the functionality of his patients, as well as educate them about how they can account for their own health through exercise, ergonomics and nervous system function. Now having practiced in Pasco County for more than 10 years, Dr. Scheu focuses on bettering the overall health of residents living in Wesley Chapel, New Tampa and the surrounding areas. Dr. Scheu was raised in Clearwater and graduated with his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Life University in Marietta, GA, in 1997 and received his Florida D.C. license in 1998. He also previously earned a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition from the same university. The D.C. degree requires roughly the same number of years to complete as a medical doctor (M.D.), but emphasizes patient care through a holistic approach to treating the whole patient, rather than only treating the symptoms that the patient might be exhibiting. “Our goal is to affect 34 million people, which is roughly 10 percent of the U.S. population,” says Dr. Scheu, adding that less than 10 percent of the population currently uses chiropractic care. “If we (the chiropractic community) can do that, healthcare as we know it will change.” The goal, Dr. Scheu says, is to correct previously undiagnosed or misdiagnosed misalignments of the spine (referred to as subluxations) to improve how bodies function, so that functionality is enhanced long

before the body shows symptoms. In other words, the goal of chiropractors across the U.S. is to take care of problems before those problems manifest in illness or pain. Some of the principals of chiropractic therapy are similar to other systems of medicine, but Dr. Scheu says the beliefs, as well as the manner of application of these principles, distinguishes it from Dr. William Scheu and his staff at New Tampa Chiropractic & Inthe other forms of jury Center off S.R. 56 want to help end your chronic pain. medicine. No Child Is Turned Away At Shriners Hospital For Children-Tampa® By Kelly Miller With the cost of medical treatments skyrocketing, it can be difficult for a family to meet the financial obligations of mounting bills when they have a child who has long-term medical needs. That’s why it’s so amazing that Shriners Hospitals for Children-Tampa® (Shriners Hospital) accepts all children, regardless of the family’s ability to pay. Shriners Hospitals for Children® is a one-of-a kind pediatric health care system made up of 22 hospitals dedicated to improving the lives of children through specialized treatments, innovative research and outstanding teaching programs. The Tampa location, which opened in 1985, is off Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. on the University of South Florida’s Tampa campus in the Research Park and specializes in orthopaedic conditions, but also assists children with post-operative burn care. (Other locations deal with spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate.) Shriners International, a fraternal group and branch of the Freemasons, runs the Shriners Hospitals organization. There are more than 200 chapters of Shriners across North and South America, Europe and Asia, although its international headquarters is right here in Tampa. According to its website, Shriners International describes itself as a fraternity based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief and truth. Although women still can not become Shriners, there also are several organizations for women that support the

fraternity and philanthropy of Shriners. Through a family-centered environment, Shriners Hospital Tampa is dedicated to providing medical and rehabilitative services to children from birth to 18 years old that have congenital deformities and conditions, problems resulting from orthopaedic injuries and diseases of the neuromusculoskeletal system. Specific conditions include: • Club foot • Hand disorders • Limb deficiencies/discrepancies • Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease and other hip disorders • Scoliosis (curvature of the spine) • Osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease) • Orthopaedic problems associated with cerebral palsy and spina bifida Fourteen-year-old Lutz resident Leigh Dittman was diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfect, which causes her bones to be very weak and fragile, when she was an infant. The Tampa Shriners Hospital has taken care of Leigh since she was a newborn. Her mother Ellen Dittman says, “The doctors, nurses and staff helped us learn how to handle Leigh with broken bones, surgeries, IV treatments and more than anything, gave us a listening ear. Sometimes the journey can get a little bumpy, but with the help of Shriners, there is always the help we need to keep going. Their medical expertise has helped my daughter have a better life.” Because of the wonderful care Leigh’s received, the Dittman family (Leigh, Beth, and David) is determined to help other chil-

dren who need the services of Shriners Hospitals. As Beth says, “Without Shriners, we don’t know where we would be today.” The Dittmans are on a quest to raise $1 million dollars. They’ve already raised $570,000 dollars and hope you can help them get one step closer to reaching their goal by attending the 11th annual Leigh Dittman Charity Fund Raiser on Saturday, September 20, 5:30 p.m., at the India Cultural Center (5511 Lynn Rd.) in Tampa. The hospital’s goal is that each child becomes as healthy and independent as possible. Demas says, “It takes time for a child to adapt to using a prosthetic in order to accomplish the activities of their daily life.”

In Tampa & Everywhere

Up to 40 times a month, Shriners Hospital Tampa participates in a collaborative care program known as telemedicine. This is a two-way, real time interactive communication between a patient and a doctor at a distant site. Children from all over Florida who are recovering from burns travel to the Tampa campus. The staff uses a camera to transmit a live video feed of a patient’s burns that doctors at the Shriners Hospital in Cincinnati, OH (where they specialize in treating burn victims), can view on a television set. Shriners doctors in Ohio suggest the best course of treatment while the Tampa doctors meet the patient’s needs by providing things like dressing changes and burn garments. Telemedicine is a cost-effective alternative that eliminates costly travel arrangements for follow-up visits, but still ensures each child gets the best care from Shriners Hospitals. Not only do Shriners, who are known for the red fez hats they wear, offer financial support to run the hospitals, they help fill many of the volunteer positions and there are quite a few areas a volunteer to choose from to help. When asked why Hough keeps leading tours year after year,

he said, “I’ve always been an instructor, and I believe deeply in what we do.” Another invaluable service Shriners volunteers offer is picking up children and their families from their home and bringing them to the hospital. They’ll drive as far away as Georgia, Panama City and Miami to provide transportation for the family. These drivers proudly wear name tags with the mileage they’ve traveled in their years of service and it’s not uncommon to them to drive 100,000 miles each.

Relying On Donors

Shriners Hospitals relies on the generosity of donors to help accomplish its mission. Every donation and gift — large or small — is greatly appreciated, acknowledged and used efficiently and effectively to improve the lives of children. You can make a difference in the life of a child by making a one-time donation, a matching gift available through an employer, an annual monetary commitment, an honorarium or a donation through planned giving. To find out more information or make a donation, visit the Shriners Hospital located at 12502 USF Pine Dr., or call 975-7118. You also can visit ShrinersHospitalsForChildren. org or Facebook.com/SHCTampa. Other ways you can help are to refer a patient to the Shriners Hospital’s referral line (866-7740) or lend your time and talents by volunteering (975-7159). To find out how you can get involved with Shriners International, call (800) 537-4746.

SPOTLIGHT ON... Get More Offers.com! Licensed real estate Broker Keith Gordon is the co-owner of Florida’s largest discount real estate brokerage firm, ADDvantage Real Estate Services. Along with his partner/marketing director Erin Knorr, Gordon created GetMoreOffers.com in 2005 out of the belief that the traditional real estate commission model is flawed. The partners’ intention was to build a “customer first” discount real estate brokerage and the plan worked — today, ADDvantage has grown to have an average of more than 500 active listings statewide, with 475 homes generating $145 million+ in sales in the past year alone. Keith and Erin believe real estate should be more transactional, allowing sellers to gain more control, saving a considerable amount of money in commissions but, at the same time, still having access to the expertise required to navigate the selling process and net the most possible. Keith says that he recently began sending his customer base a weekly email, encouraging sellers to be vigilant about price and to not hesitate to drop price now, as opposed to later, if that fits their plan. “Rates are artificially low and the stock market is sending a clear signal that the Fed will raise rates in the short order,” Gordon explains. “The real estate market is already weak, as prices in Tampa Bay have been trending down since August of 2013, but now, there are signs of rates heading up. Short term, though, a bounce in rates should stimulate the market by motivating buyers and sellers to get busy.” Gordon adds, “The factors currently influencing the economy are: strong indus-

trial production numbers, an upward trend in wages (sorely needed in the U.S.) and an extremely bullish market. But, the back drop is a still-weak real estate market. Builders are now competing with existing homes for customers and there is no stopping building corporations chasing building profits, something we learned from 2004-06.” ADDvantage helps sellers succeed in selling at any price, Gordon says, thanks to the group’s comprehensive marketing and superior customer service. And, the firm’s average days for a property on the market from listing to contract is 66 days (shorter than industry standards), proving that the group is doing something right. “My advice to homeowners right now: price tight to the market,” he says. “Leave no wiggle room, just sell and get your new home bought before rates go up. The truth is buyers will still pay for what they want even it means fullprice or higher.” ADDvantage Real Estate Services also is affiliated with Frontier National Title and can be reached at (727) 942-2929 or at GetMoreOffers.com.

Medi Weightloss Clinic Can Help You Lose Weight & Gain Confidence By Lauren Saslow

For the fourth consecutive year, Medi Weightloss Clinic of Lutz/Wesley Chapel once again has been named the Gold Winner of East and Central Pasco County Weight Loss Clinics in the Pasco Tribune Reader’s Poll! And, it’s no wonder that the third clinic in this nationwide franchise continues to thrive, despite a depressed economy. According to the clinic’s website, Medi Weightloss Clinic offers a holistic medical approach to weight loss and is intended as a lifestyle change, not just a get-skinny-quick scheme. As part of a nationwide franchise, each of the 73 locations in 22 states, including the Lutz/Wesley Chapel location on S.R. 54 (just east of the Eagle Plaza shopping center) has a full-time physician on staff at all times to oversee the treatment of all patients. This closest location to New Tampa has three full-time physicians. The first, Medical Director Kelli Maw, M.D., earned her M.B., B.S. (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) degree (a seven-year medical doctor program) from the Institute of Medicine 1 in Yangon, Myanmar, as well as a Master’s degree in Public Health from Columbia University in New York City. Maw also is a Diplomate with the American Board of Family Medicine and a member of the American Society

of Bariatric (weight loss) Physicians. Howard Riker, D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine), one of two new doctors at Medi Weightloss, is a retired U.S. Air Force family medicine physician who earned his D.O. degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Before coming to Medi Weightloss in 2008, Dr. Riker was the chief of medical staff at MacDill Air Force Base for six years. Medi Weightloss’ other new addition is Ian Matheson, M.D., who is a retired plastic surgeon. Dr. Matheson earned both his M.D. and C.M. (Master of Surgery) degrees from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Dr. Matheson also is Board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The medical staff also includes registered nurse (R.N.) Patty Pinson and medical assistants Jessica Baur (who also is the office manager), Erin Jones and Jennifer Minnix. Edward Kaloust founded Medi Weightloss Franchising USA, LLC, in 2005 and is still the CEO working out of the corporate office in South Tampa. Tom and Gerri Willett, the owners and managers of the Lutz/Wesley Chapel franchise, are friends of Kaloust’s and partnered with Tom’s sister and brother-in-law Mark and Ronda Willett to open the location in 2006. The clinic is in a shared space with 10 to 10 Urgent Care (which is not

under the same business ownership). The Willets also are partners in eight other Medi Weightloss Clinics in Florida and Texas. With Tom’s mother June working in the front office of the Lutz/Wesley Chapel location, it truly is a family business.

None of the items in the bag are prescribed by a doctor. Although the doctors at Medi Weightloss have the ability to prescribe medications, they typically first try to keep patients on natural supplements. The start-up cost for the first visit and all services and supplies is a onetime payment of $268, which Gerri describes as, “An investment in yourself. If you’re healthy, thinking clearly and you’re happy, then it trickles down to

the wellness of your entire family. After all, what’s more important than your health?” Throughout phase one, the patient continues with weekly visits for $70. Included in the cost is the Medi Booster, member-only access on the website, Medi Stay Slim (an appetite suppressant) as well as grocery lists and recipes for a lower calorie diet created by Registered Dietician (RD) Christine Achenbach — who also is a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). Achenbach works in the Medi Weightloss corporate office, but is available to any clinic location remotely. Patients also receive coaching on weekly goals for healthier lifestyle choices. An InterActive Exercise Kit also is available for purchase at any time during the program that includes tools for cardio, resistance training and stretching, along with a video and pedometer to track daily steps. In phase two — aka Short-Term Maintenance — the patient continues to visit the clinic weekly to check body fat, measurements and blood pressure. He or she is offered a Medi Booster, additional reading material and adjustments to their diet, During this phase, daily caloric intake and energy expenditure are increased to maintain their new weight, while any medication the patient was previously on is slowly decreased.

Finally, the patient enters phase three — aka the Wellness Phase — a time for monitoring body composition and goals monthly and continuing with optional Medi Boosters and B1/B6 injections offered weekly, if the patient chooses to take advantage of them. “Once you start a program, you are always a member,” says Gerry. In other words, patients are not charged a start-up fee if he or she needs to return to the program to reach his or her goal weight again. In these cases, patients are only charged the weekly rate.

Join The Medi All-Stars!

The hallway of the clinic is wallpapered with Medi All-Stars — the before-and-after pictures of successful (and happy!) patients like Melissa Kramer and Anthony Perez (photos, left), who each reached their respective goal weights. Kramer initially chose to start the Medi Weightloss program because it’s near her home in Collier Place and she passed it on her way to work every day and saw signs with successful patients’ pictures. “When I tried to lose weight on my own, I didn’t stick with it,” explains Kramer. “I needed a program to hold me accountable.” Kramer says she has lost more than 40 pounds total with Medi Weightloss and went from a size 14 to a size 6. She notes that she has kept the weight off for more than a year. “I’ve recommended the program to friends

and they’ve been successful, too.” Perez, a Meadow Pointe resident, also likes the convenient location and the hours of availability. He describes his life-long struggle with weight and the annoyances of having to pay extra for plus-size clothing. Because his father is a diabetic, Perez also was afraid of developing diabetes. At age 20, weighing 276 pounds, he started the Medi program. More than a year later, he was down to 175 pounds! “My friends, family and co-workers began to see the change in my physical appearance, as well as in my attitude, throughout the program,” Perez says. “For the first time in my life, I actually enjoyed exercising and participating in sports.” He equates the program to a “blueprint” of the person he wants to be, inside and out. Want to shed pounds and feel better about your self-image? Visit the Medi Weightloss Clinic in Lutz/ Wesley Chapel at 24420 S.R. 54 in Lutz, less than two miles west of S.R. 56. New Tampa Schools Outshine District, All Earning At Least A ‘B’ Grade! By Matt Wiley

Just weeks after final Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) 2.0 scores were released — and in the shadow of big changes for the state’s comprehensive testing and school accountability system — the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) has released preliminary 2014 school grades for non-high schools, and New Tampa’s schools have stolen the show. According to the FDOE report released on July 11, eight of New Tampa’s ten non-high schools earned the prestigious ‘A’ grade this year, with the other two schools earning a ‘B.’ Congratulations to Benito, Bartels and Liberty middle schools, as well as Chiles, Clark, Pride, Tampa Palms and Turner elementary schools for each earning an ‘A.’ In addition, Heritage and Hunter’s Green Elementary (HGE) schools each earned a ‘B,’ the latter of which was up from a ‘C’ grade last school year. HGE is one of 60 schools across the District that performed well enough to improve by a letter grade. A press release from the Hillsborough County School District (HCSD-which received a ‘B’ grade overall) states that 63 elementary schools received ‘A’ grades, up from 40 the previous year, while 20 middle schools also received top marks, 14 more than last school year. “We know that our students and teachers have been working hard this year, and it’s great to finish the school year and get these kinds of results,’’ said superinten-

dent MaryEllen Elia in the release. “During this transitional time, it’s gratifying to see our students performing at such high levels. Our students, teachers, principals and parents should be very proud.” New Tampa’s high grades come as the state prepares to transition to the new “Florida Standards,” which will be implemented this coming (2014-15) school year and are to be much more rigorous in English language arts, writing and mathematics to keep up with the new, nationally-recognized “Common Core” standards. Liberty principal James Ammirati says that he was excited to see his school’s ‘A,’ when the report was released in July. “It’s always gratifying to see the accomplishments of our students,” Ammirati says. “You see their accomplishments all year long, but the grade really solidifies it.” Ammirati attributes Liberty’s heavily involved Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA), engaged students, dedicated teachers and the support of students’ parents to keeping the top grade. “The ‘A’ grade is a testament to the hard work all year long of our teachers, staff and student body,” Ammirati says.

the Florida Alternate Assessment (FAA), an alternative test for students who are unable to complete the FCAT test due to cognitive or learning disabilities. Points are given for students who score “satisfactory” or higher and/or make learning gains. A point is awarded for each percent of the school’s students who score satisfactory or better in each subject area of each test. For example, students who score a level 3 or higher on the math, reading and science FCAT 2.0 tests, and/or a level 4 on EoC tests, and a 3.5 or higher on FCAT writing, the percentage of students that achieve that level in each subject is

the point value that the school is given. To earn an “A,” at least 95 percent of the school’s students must have been tested and at least 595 points must have been earned by those students. To determine learning gains, test scores for students in each subject on FCAT, EoC and FAA tests are examined by comparing those scores with those from the previous year. If students perform at the same level or improve on their achievement level, the school also earns points for that percentage of students. For more information, please visit FLDOE.org and click on the “School Grades” tab.

School Grades Rubric

Based partly upon the FCAT, elementary school grades are measured using an 800-point scale for elementaries (900 points for middle schools). The grades also take into account End-of-Course (EoC) test scores, which are given in middle and high schools in a variety of subjects, and

SPOTLIGHT ON...Ignite Cheerleading! If your child is interested in cheerleading, but you’re not sure if you and/ or your child are ready to commit to the usual 3-5-days-per-week and thousands of dollars in cost that most competitive cheer programs require, Ignite Cheerleading is a great place to start. Founder Kelly Stewart is a New Tampa resident who recently relocated from the South Suburbs of Chicago, where she founded Ignite in 2009. The program expanded to 15 locations in Illinois and now, Stewart has eight Tampa Bay area locations ready to host your future cheerleader/dancer — whether they end up being interested in a more competitive cheer or dance environment in the future or just love dressing up in cheer gear and getting an hour’s worth of outstanding cardio and strength-building exercise per week — all in a nurturing, no-pressure environment. “Throughout the 5 years I’ve been open outside of Chicago, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing young athletes grow up, make friends, gain confidence and accomplish their goals in life,” says Stewart, the entrepreneurial former high school cheerleader and longtime cheer coach. “Having created memories and seen the smiles on young athletes’ faces for five years makes me proud to bring the Ignite program to Florida.” Among the eight Ignite locations now in place and signing up participants as this issue is reaching you are the Pebble Creek Golf Club (off Bruce B. munity Church (on Henley Rd. in Lutz, off S.R. 54), CrossPointe Church on DeBuel Rd. in Lutz), plus locations in North Tampa (at Rogers Park Golf Course), Westchase, Lithia, Brandon and Riverview. All of the locations offer once-a-week (for 15 weeks, 55 minutes/week), recreational cheer and dance programs for ages 5-14. There are no tryouts and no experience needed. And, while there are in-house competitions (with professional judging, trophies, spirit awards, etc.) at each location, Stewart stresses that, “Ignite Cheerleading is an organization that strives to educate, emphasize fundamentals, good sportsmanship, leadership, confidence, teamwork and dedication. Your child will learn basic stunts, tumbling, motions, formation changes and dance moves from qualified coaches, all while focusing on team-building essentials.” Ignite Cheerleading is now hiring qualified coaches at all locations. Wharton’s Auden Tate Commits To Join The Reigning National Champs! By Matt Wiley

Wharton High’s Auden Tate has made his decision: he will attend and play for the current National Champion Florida State University (FSU) Seminoles on a football scholarship, following his graduation after the 2014-15 school year. During an August 5 press conference at Wharton High, located on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. in New Tampa, Tate made his announcement to a room full of coaches, family and friends, officially making the decision to join the Seminoles, who won the 2014 BCS National Title in January. However, Tate, the 6-foot-4, 195-pound senior wide receiver/tight end, will first play one more season for Coach David Mitchell at Wharton. “It was a hard choice, but I’m picking one school that I love a lot,” Tate said, before donning an FSU T-shirt and visor to a room full of applause. Tate said his decision partly was due to the experience he had while visiting the FSU campus in Tallahassee. He said that the coaches really clicked with his parents and him, especially FSU’s head strength & conditioning coach Vic Viloria. “Some schools tell you that you have the skills you need,” Tate explained. “(Coach Vic) said he’d be on me and tell my parents and make me be the best that I can be. I respect him for being up-front with me and not promising me anything. He promised me the opportunity to work and compete for a spot on the team.”

countable for all of our actions.” Mitchell, who played football and wrestled at Yankton College in South Dakota, said that Tate made a good decision. “For one thing, he’s still close to home,” Mitchell said. “His parents can always come watch him play. He’s wellgrounded and (co-offensive coordinator/ wide receiving) Coach (Lawrence) Dawsey is a great coach. He’ll be like a father figure to (Tate). I think that’s the right environment for him.” Dawsey, himself, has some Tampa roots, having been drafted as a wide reWharton High senior Auden Tate does “The Tomahawk Chop,” after committing to play ceiver in the third round of the 1991 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where football at FSU on Aug. 5.

he played until 1995 before making his way around the league. After retiring in 1999 as a member of the New Orleans Saints, Dawsey came back to Tampa to serve as the wide receiving coach for the University of South Florida Bulls from 2004-06. Mitchell, who also is Wharton’s wrestling coach, joked that the cold weather in Michigan might have been a little shocking and swayed Tate’s decision, adding that having already decided where he will play in college before even starting his senior season at Wharton will relieve some pressure on him this year. “Now, it’s just about going out there and having fun,” Mitchell said.

Tate said that when he first went to Tallahassee, he wasn’t expecting much and actually was more interested in the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, but after speaking with the coaching staff, his decision was clear: he would join the Seminole Nation. Tate said that his time at Wharton has prepared him well to head to FSU in 2015. In his 10 games played last season, Tate had 49 receptions for 815 yards (16.7 yards per catch) and five touchdowns. He says that Coach Mitchell, 60-40 since taking over as the Wildcats head coach in 2005, has instilled strict discipline in him, as well as the rest of the team, that will help him in college. “Coach Mitchell stays on us,” Tate explained. “He really makes us each ac-

New Tampa Student Interviews Milwaukee Bucks Star John Henson By Antwon Gildon

Many young fans dream of one day coming face to face with NBA superstars such as Lebron James or Kobe Bryant. Recently, although it wasn’t “His Airness” or “LBJ,” one New Tampa-area resident and local high school player got the chance to go one-on-one with current Milwaukee Bucks forward John Henson. Paul R. Wharton High sophomore Travyon Gildon was given the opportunity to interview Henson, the 6’11” former Sickles High star, during the Tampa Bay Sports Expo, which was held at the Tampa Convention Center downtown on July 19. Henson averaged 11.1 points and 7.1 rebounds this past season, the second of his NBA career and with the Bucks. Along with Up2Us — a nationwide program that promotes positive youth development through sports — Henson hosted “The John Henson Experience,” a clinic that allowed kids of all ages to learn various skills from Henson and other Up2Us basketball coaches. During the interview with Henson, it was apparent that Travyon was nervous from the moment they sat down to talk. But Henson, who said he, “wanted to be a lawyer” before choosing a career on a different court, helped the young reporter feel at ease. Gildon, who last season played guard for both Wharton’s junior varsity & varsity teams, often draws comparisons to

(among) the best features any city can offer.” With new head coach Jason Kidd and 1st round draft pick Jabari Parker from Duke University — whom Henson describes as a “great player who will definitely help our team” — the longsuffering Bucks look to be a team on the upswing in the upcoming NBA season. As for the clinic itself, Henson and the Up2Us coaches did not disappoint. Fans of all ages were taken through a vast assortment of drills and activities that showcased the knowledge that Up2Us is known for. With a focus on sports-based youth development, Up2Us uses the power of sports to reduce youth violence,

promote a healthy lifestyle and inspire academic success for kids in every U.S. community. By training and placing coaches in programs all across the U.S., Up2Us uses its resources to positively impact the future for kids. The sports expo was a huge success, with interactive stations featuring representatives from all three local professional teams — the Tampa Bay Rays, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tampa Bay Lightning. The major focus of the event was to show kids how to play different sports the right way. For more info about Up2Us, please visit Up2Us.org.

his idol Chris Paul, the Los Angles Clippers guard he had the chance to meet a few years back. When Trayvon asked what player inspired him as a child, Henson replied with another Florida native: Tracy McGrady, the recently retired shooting guard who spent four of his 16 NBA seasons with the Orlando Magics. McGrady was a seven-time NBA All-Star and twotime league scoring champion. Florida obviously was on Henson’s mind when he said that he “misses the sunny days of Tampa,” adding that although playing in Milwaukee has its challenges when it comes to the weather, “the fans inside the Bradley Center are

WaZoo Serves Brews, Raises Thousands For Lowry Park Zoo By Matt Wiley

Craft beer is all the rage these days, with craft breweries popping up all over the Tampa Bay area. With so many beers to try, it’s a good thing that events exist like Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo’s 19th annual WaZoo Beer Festival. The event not only quenches attendees’ thirst for creative craft brews, but also raises money for the zoo. Director of public relations Rachel Nelson says that this year’s WaZoo raised more than $130,000 that will go towards animal care, education programs at the zoo and to help the zoo’s global conservation initiatives. Dark skies brought on an ominous vibe for the beer fest in the hours leading up to the event. A storm that rocked the New Tampa area on the afternoon of August 2 fizzled out as it moved south, providing dry, but humid weather at the zoo (located off W. Sligh Ave. in Tampa), at least until the sun went down and the skies opened up. However, a little rain didn’t stop this beer drinker from partaking and documenting the scene. With no animals on display

at the zoo, it was up to the nearly 4,000 attendees to be the wildlife. With 14 eateries on hand and more than 80 breweries distributed by J.J. Taylor from across the country presenting the option to try more than 300 craft beers, ales and hard ciders (many of which are not commonly seen on supermarket shelves), this challenge was not taken lightly by many. First to drink all 300 beers “wins.” (Just kidding.) Among the noteworthy breweries included Newport, Oregon’s Rogue Ales, which brought out its infamous Yellow Snow India Pale Ale (IPA), and Voodoo Doughnut Pretzel, Raspberry & Chocolate Ale, which tastes exactly how it sounds: amazing. Tampa’s own Cigar City Brewing brought out a keg of its freshly brewed Marshal Zhukov’s Imperial Stout, along with local bar regulars (and this writer’s personal favorite) Jai Alai IPA and the easy-going Hotter Than Helles lager, with the Cigar City Brewpub serving up stuffed peppers at an adjacent tent. Talk about the perfect pairing of beer with food! Other food vendors included Ker’s

Wing House, Kona Grill, BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse, Big Momma’s Smokehouse BBQ, Brick House Tavern & Tap, Grimaldi’s Pizzeria, James Joyce Irish Pub & Eatery, Papa John’s Pizza, Sonny’s BBQ, Tijuana Flats and more. It was difficult to walk past San Diegobased Stone Brewing Co. without trying its signature Stone IPA and Arrogant Bastard Ale, which the brewery openly admits, “You probably won’t like it.” Arrogant, indeed. Tampa Bay Beers, a home brewers club that meets the first Tuesday of each month at Mr. Dunderbaks (located in the Oak Ramble shopping plaza, just south of Tampa Palms on BBD), also was in attendance, pouring samples of traditional beer styles, including IPAs, lagers and porters, but also brought a chocolate-strawberry milk stout. Delicious.

Other notable vendors included Peabody’s Billiards & Games, which had a beer pong table game set up and also had its new, signature Peabody’s Brand Wing Sauce for sale. All in all, despite getting soaked, the event was a success and I had a blast. The next fund raiser for the zoo is ZooBoo, a Halloween celebration that begins October 3 and runs nightly during the weekends through November 1. New Tampa Dance Theatre Celebrates 20th Year Of Business By Kelly Miller

With reality shows like “So You Think You Can Dance” and “Dancing With The Stars” still gaining in popularity, there’s a misconception that dance is all about flashy, ego-driven competition. That couldn’t be further from the truth at the New Tampa Dance Theatre (NTDT), located on Cross Creek Blvd. (across from Heritage Isles). Owner and artistic director Dyane Elkins IronWing focuses on creating an atmosphere where you and your child can have a drama-free dance experience. This is an exciting year for Elkins IronWing, as she is celebrating three huge milestones. First, it’s the 20th anniversary for NTDT (which originally opened in Pebble Creek in 1995), the 15th anniversary for the studio’s interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet “The Nutcracker” and the 10th anniversary for the Sugar Plum Fairy Tea (see below). “We have an amazing season ahead of us,” Elkins IronWing said. “We want to thank all of our trusting and loyal families over the years and the organizations that continually support us. Without their recognition and time, this wouldn’t be possible.” NTDT opened in the Pebble Creek Collection on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., but in 2006, Elkins IronWing purchased land on Cross Creek Blvd, building and personally designing a 10,000-sq.-ft. professional dance training facility, with 7,500-sq.-ft. of it as a standalone dance space. It was the first and is still the larg-

42

est dance training facility in New Tampa. Moving to the new, bigger location meant more classrooms, which allowed for a larger schedule selection and smaller class sizes. Elkins IronWing’s love of dance is what led her to open her own dance theatre. A dancer herself, she says she started training at age five and eventually studied at the Ballet Metropolitan in New York City. She and her husband Troy IronWing continue to tour nationally with the Rhythm Extreme Performance Troupe, something they’ve been doing as a couple for the past 10 years. Troy also has been NTDT’s director of tap dance since 2003, and he leads beginning and intermediate adult tap classes. Whether dancers are seeking recreational classes or pre-professional training, NTDT literally caters to everyone. Along with classical ballet, the studio offers full programs in modern, jazz, tap, hip hop, and creative movement, each of which has its own director and a specific syllabus to accomplish. Teen/Adult classes include four eightweek sessions (from Sept.-May) of Jazz Funk, Adult Tap, and Ballet Barre Exercise. Children ages 3-4 can participate in the Early Childhood Program, ages 5-8 can participate in the Children’s Program, and ages 9-18 can participate in the Youth Program. Some of the school’s spectacular instructors include modern dance director Carla Armstrong, who holds a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in dance from the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City, local choreographer Dreama Davidson,

who directs hip hop dance classes, as well as both Dyane and Troy, who teach jazz and tap, respectively.

Kids Pre-Prof. Program

Students participating in NTDT’s pre-professional program become equally proficient in multiple art forms, from classical ballet to modern jazz and tap. This allows for more opportunities for success in the very competitive world of dance. Many NTDT students have been accepted into prestigious summer intensive programs, including School of American Ballet and American Ballet Theater in New York City, The Harid Conservatory in Boca Raton, the Joffrey Ballet in Chicago and the Boston Ballet. Two former NTDT students have even received full-ride scholarships to the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University in Manhattan, NYC. NTDT alumni also have gone on to professional careers in dance, with highly respected companies such as Pilobolus in Connecticut, Paul Taylor 2 Dance Company and Parsons Dance Company in New York City, Broadway and Off-Broadway productions and for the Walt Disney Company. Arbor Greene resident Randi Guerne believes, “NTDT’s professional staff encourages strong technique while still having fun. As a parent, I feel this is very important, as it solidifies a positive self-image during their school years.” Randi’s daughter, Krista Guerne, a freshman honors student at Paul R. Wharton High, has been dancing at NTDT for 11 years. Randi says that because

New Tampa Dance Theatre students Joshua Armstrong, 9, and Amanda Tanner, 10, perform a modern dance routine during this past season’s “Spring Production.” of her training, Krista has been accepted and has attended and performed with some of the top national dance companies during her summer breaks from school.

Recreational Program

NTDT’s reputation is one of creating strong, professional dancers. However, Elkins IronWing says that 60 percent of the studio’s students are enrolled in the popular recreational programs. That means all of the students benefit from the same high-quality training that is the hallmark of NTDT. And, the cost is more affordable than you think! Besides the monthly tuition, there is only a small costume rental fee for

recitals. You won’t find any hidden costs, such as performance fees or the requirement to purchase advertising. The NTDT facility has many special features, including maple flooring for the tap classes, 15-20 ft.-tall mirrored walls, student locker rooms and a large studio space that can accommodate up to 200 people. Because Elkins IronWing knows that dance is extremely strenuous on the body, NTDT also has sprung floors that provide shock absorption to protect the dancer’s joints. There’s even a physical therapist on site to ensure the health of the dancers. And, with many parents rushing home from work to get the kids to dance practice, they’ll especially appreciate the on-site café that offers hot meals, as well as drinks, snacks and even tasty ice cream. New Tampa residents Paula and Ron Nelson say they enrolled their daughter Malia in Creative Movement classes at NTDT when she was only three years old. Now, six years later, she’s moved up to the youth program, where she’s enrolled in ballet, tap, jazz, modern and hip hop. “As a result of the yearly recitals at the University of South Florida (USF), Malia loves performing on stage and has absolutely no stage fright,” Paula explains. “This has carried over to school, where she’s comfortable making presentations to her classmates and participating in yearly school plays.” As a student at NTDT, all dancers have the opportunity to perform in the “Spring Production” and — through NTDT’s nonprofit-partner, Dance Theatre of Tampa (DTT) — they also can perform in the “Summer Concert Series.” This dance performance is held every June at USF and is

It’s an original production created by Elkins IronWing and her staff, based upon their interpretation of the Tchaikovsky classic. “The Nutcracker” is performed every December at USF’s College of the Arts Theater 1. Tickets go on sale October 20 for the December 19-21, 2014, performances. For the past five years, DTT also has been offering the community a sneak peak of “The Nutcracker” at the Shops at Wiregrass. This year’s free performances are on November 29 and December 5, 6, 12, 13 & 14. DTT’s most popular fund raiser, “The Sugar Plum Fairy Tea” — which will be held Sunday, December 7, 2 p.m.-4 p.m., at the USF Gibbons Alumni Center — quickly sells out each year. Participants enjoy a light lunch, scrumptious desserts (including a chocolate fountain), exciting giveaways, a sneak preview of “The Nutcracker,” and an opportunity to dance with Clara (the lead role of the young girl who receives the beloved Nutcracker as a Christmas gift) and Clara’s “party friends.” Each year, a portion of the proceeds from the Tea are donated to The Ronald McDonald House Charities in South Tampa. It’s easy to see why NTDT was voted 2014’s “Best Dance Theater” in the Northeast area for the second year in a row by The Tampa Tribune’s Northeast Edition. ways will be. We are a company that enables children to succeed. The key is setting high expectations all while having fun and building self-confidence.” Through personal attention and professional expertise, the NTDT faculty is committed to providing a positive educational experience based on their core principles of respect, responsibility, and teamwork, Elkins IronWing explains. Students gain self-esteem, determination and a strong work ethic — skills that allow them to succeed and attain their future goals. “I believe this has carried us into our amazing celebration that will continue through the next 20 years,” she says. “I look forward to an even brighter future. The best is yet to come!” NTDT offers year-round free trial classes for prospective dancers of all ages.

Sprinkles Features Hershey’s Ice Cream, Family Fun In Wesley Chapel By Celeste McLaughlin

On a recent Friday afternoon, Tiffany Walensky and her two little girls stopped in Sprinkles Ice Cream Parlor, located next to Super Target in the Northwood Plaza at the intersection of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. and County Line Rd. “We discovered Sprinkles several months ago and now, we visit a few times a month,” says Tiffany, who lives in New River Township on S.R. 54 in Wesley Chapel, and is a photographer. “Sprinkles has a great variety of flavors, is in a great location, and it’s always fun to take the kids out for something they enjoy.” Tiffany’s daughters, Brooke and Bailey, smiled from ear to ear as they enjoyed their afternoon treat. Brooke, who’s 7, had orange sherbet (which she called her new favorite), while her little

sister Bailey, 2, enjoyed a cup of strawberry ice cream. “We appreciate that the staff is always super friendly and there’s plenty of seating available,” Tiffany says. “We’re at Target a lot, so it’s very convenient.” Kim Adams opened Sprinkles last November, after 20 years in the banking industry. She says she was looking for something new and decided to pursue her long-time dream of opening her own small business. “I opened Sprinkles because every step along the way just felt right,” explains Kim. “I knew I wanted to sell high-quality ice cream and when I met with the people from Hershey’s Ice Cream, I got a great vibe.” So, she decided to open an independent, locally owned shop selling Hershey’s ice cream. The Hershey’s Ice Cream brand has been made in Harrisburg, PA, since 1894. The company is not, and never has been affiliated, with the chocolate company of the same name, even though it has a similar logo. Although Kim says there are a couple of places where you can find Hershey’s Ice Cream locally (a coffee shop and a cupcake store), she has (by far) the largest variety. Sprinkles always has at least 36 Hershey’s flavors available, with new flavors every week. “We just got Rocky Road in this week for a customer who requested it,” says Kim, who adds that she is always

happy to go the extra mile for her customers. “The product is phenomenal and people love it. So, we make sure we have a clean parlor and excellent customer service, and pay attention to details so every customer always has a great experience.” Some of the most popular flavors at Sprinkles are cookies Owner Kim Adams invites you to enjoy delicious Hershey’s Ice and cream, coconut, Cream & more at Sprinkles Ice Cream Parlor in the Northwood red velvet cake, and Plaza on BBD at County Line Rd. in Wesley Chapel. the chocolate lover’s cookie, bottom left) are our editor’s favorite Moose Tracks. favorites), warm brownie sundaes, froSprinkles also keeps Superman ice zen fruit bars, ice cream sandwiches and cream in stock, which Kim says has more. “Our ice cream floats have been something of a cult following. Toast Wine Café Offers New Menu Items, Wine Dinners, Catering & More By Gary Nager; Photos by Matt Wiley

If you live in New Tampa and you’re a fan of fine wines and great food, you probably already know all about Toast Wine & Café in the Oak Ramble Plaza on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. (just south of Tampa Palms) and my buddy (and Toast co-owner) Hector Gonzalez, the most knowledgeable wine guy in the New Tampa area. Hector can not only tell you which wines to pair with which foods, he says his specialty is getting you the best possible wine values for your money. “If you’re usually in that $20-$50 range when you buy wine,” says Hector, “I can keep you in that price range but the wines I pick might be as good as those you’d buy in the $50-$100 range at a boutique wine store someplace else.” But, he’s so much more than just a “wine guy.” Over the past couple of years, Hector says he has had a lot of success with wine pairing dinners at Toast and, at least

at first, he would bring in top chefs from area restaurants and catering companies to prepare the menus for those amazing dinners. “I have always been a foodie myself,” he says. “I’ve been working with and observing great chefs since I was 18, so my love of wine actually grew out of my love for great food. marinated portobello mushroom “burger,” a variety of artisanal cheese platters, quesadillas, and even tasty “deconstructed” (where you pick the ingredients) and other fresh salads, all with homemade dressings. “We also specialize in corporate Happy Hour events and you can even reserve the entire place here for parties of up to 50 people (Sun.-Tues. only) with no room charge (you just pay for your food and beverage),” says Hector. “Yes, catering is a specialty, too.” Feel like a great cup of coffee? Hector uses a private roaster who provides estate varieties from Guatemala, Costa Rica and other exotic locales, and of course, cappuccinos, espressos and lattes also are available. Hector also wants you to know that Toast also serves some of the best brunch in our area — once each month on a Sunday (the next one will be in early-midSeptember; call Toast for details). For brunch, you can enjoy Hector’s decadent Belgian waffles with everything from your basic maple syrup to granola, bananas, roasted pecans, Nutella spread, fresh berries and more. You can even create your own omelet or egg sandwich. And of course, Toast offers great daily

specials, like half-priced bottles of wine on Mondays (try the tasty new Cherry Tart Single-Vineyard Blend Pinot Noir by Cherry Pie Vineyards; I’m not the biggest pinot fan, but this one is especially elegant); BOGO (Buy One, Get One Free) Tapas on Tuesdays; a special Select Bottle Promotion on Wednesdays (usually a wine valued at $25-$30 or more for just $15); “Flight Night” Thursdays, with three featured beer samples for $6 and three featured wine samples for $10; and Friday is a night for your “bucket list,” with Buckets O’Bubbles (sparkling wine) for $25 and Buckets O’ Domestic Beers (Matt, our resident beer afficionado, is partial to the Fat Tire Amber Ale at Toast) for $12. And, Hector wants to stress that there is no smoking allowed inside Toast! Yes, he still sells highly rated Arturo Fuente and other fine cigars inside, and yes, he has outside seating for smokers, but the former cigar lounge inside is gone. Call Toast Wine & Café (14921 BBD) at 632-3105. Or, visit ToastWineandCafe.com or search “ToastWine” and like the page on Facebook.com for regular updates.

Win A Two-Night Clearwater Beach Stay In Our 2014 Dining Survey & Contest! Our annual Reader Survey & Dining Contest is always one of our most popular features every year, with last year’s contest bringing in a record number (nearly 2,000!) of entries, and we believe this year’s 20th annual New Tampa & Wesley Chapel Neighborhood News Reader Dining Survey & Contest will surpass last year’s because we have our biggest & best Grand Prize ever! Just for filling out the entry form on these pages and sending it by mail, fax or email (you also can enter at NTNeighborhoodNews.com), you can win a two-night stay at the totally revamped (and beautiful) Shephard’s Beach Resort on Clearwater Beach, plus a one-hour Jet Ski ride & a $100 gift card to use at any of Shephard’s revamped restaurants, including the “interactive” new Ocean Flame restaurant. This spectacular Grand Prize has a total value of about $700! And, as always, our contest is still 100% free to enter! There are 18 categories on these two pages. To be eligible to win our Grand Prize (or ANY of our other great dining prizes; see below for details), you MUST vote for FIVE (5) restaurants in the two categories below, and ONE (1) restaurant in AT LEAST HALF OF THE CATEGORIES ON THE NEXT PAGE! The restaurants in our two distribution areas really do appreciate your votes, so we hope that this year’s prize will attract more voters who will take the time to give us as much input as possible. Yes, we know that some restaurants try to have their loyal customers stuff the ballot boxes every year, but so many of the people who enter at the restaurant locations themselves only fill in one name for every category or just a couple of categories and those ballots will NOT be counted, nor will those who don’t fill in enough categories be eligible for either the Grand Prize or our runner-up prizes of a $50 gift card to the restaurant of your choice, or any of three other dining gift certificates worth at least $25 each. And, we’re making it easier than ever for you to enter, by providing the names of all of the independently-owned and small (fewer than 20 locations) chain restaurants in each category. And yes, you can still write-in the names of the larger chain restaurants in any category, but we only provide the names of the “Mom-and-Pops” because they don’t have the benefit of being able to afford regional and national TV, national magazine and local radio ads that the large chains have running all year-round. So, have fun. Only one entry per person will be accepted, although the contest will run in our August, September and October New Tampa & Wesley Chapel issues. The entry deadline is Monday, November 3, 2014. No purchase necessary and Grand Prize winner must be age 18 or older. — GN

The Latest & Greatest News About Dining, Shopping, Retail & More In New Tampa & Wesley Chapel!

Macaroni Grill Closes & Wing Zone To Open

Here’s one we didn’t see coming — the Romano’s Macaroni Grill that had been located on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. in New Tampa (next to Chili’s Grill & Bar) for about a decade has closed. No official statement was given as to why the location was shuttered, but the construction on BBD and the closing of the Sweetbay supermarket in the same section of what is called North Palms Village certainly have not helped any of the businesses in that area. Although it won’t fill a void for those seeking Italian cuisine, we also have been keeping an eye on the progress of the first-ever Wing Zone franchise to open in Tampa. No opening date has yet been announced for the Wing Zone, which will open in the Publix-anchored New Tampa Center plaza, north of Cross Creek Blvd. (near the McDonald’s) on BBD. In 1991, Wing Zone was the brainchild of two University of Florida students who were tired of pizza as the only delivery food available. Their concept has now grown from its original Gainesville frat house location to more than 70 restaurants in 25 U.S. states, although there also are locations in Saudi Arabia and Panama, as well. Wing Zone’s website (WingZone. com) touts its many fans as “Flavorholics,” and notes that whether you order wings, chicken tenders, a chicken sandwich, a basket of shrimp or even a burger, you can choose one of Wing Zone’s amazing flavors or rubs. New CEO For Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel

It’s been open for nearly two years, but Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel

(FHWC), located on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd., already has announced its second chief executive officer (CEO). Following the departure of former FHWC CEO Brian Adams, who took the same job at Florida Hospital Tampa (located on E. Fletcher Ave.), the hospital has announced that, as of Aug. 1, Denyse Denyse BalesBales-Chubb is its Chubb new CEO. “I am passionate about health care and how we can create the best experience for our patients and their families,” said Bales-Chubb in the release. “When I visited (FHWC), I was so impressed with the energy and engagement of the staff and physicians. I am excited to join the team and build on the incredible success the hospital has already had because I believe that the hospital’s opportunities are endless.” Bales-Chubb has more than 25 years of health care experience, most recently serving as vice president/ administrator of Adventist Medical Center Selma and Adventist Medical Center Reedley, both in California. She also has served in other for-profit and not-for-profit health care organizations, including United WestLabs, Valley Baptist Health Plan, Tenet Health System, Columbia Healthcare, Lutheran Health Systems and Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center. Bales-Chubb holds a Master’s degree in health care administration from Wichita State University in Wichita, KS, and a B.S. degree in medical technology and biology from Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS. Bales-Chubb and her husband Jack have three children. “Denyse is committed to our mis-

sion and growing the legacy of Seventh-Day Adventist health care,” said Don Jernigan, president/CEO of Adventist Health System (of which FHWC is a part) in a press release. “I’m pleased to welcome her to our system and look forward to seeing her contributions to both FHWC and the Adventist Health System.” For more info, please visit FHWesleyChapel.org.

No Let-Up In WC Chamber Ribbon Cuttings

Among the recent ribboncutting events we attended that the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC; see story on page 1!) has held since our last issue were the Aug. 4 ribbon cutting at the new Pasco County Tax Collector’s Office (4610 Pet Ln., off Wesley Chapel Blvd./S.R. 54, Lutz; photo, below) and the Grand Opening of the new Jersey Mike’s Subs in the Shoppes at New Tampa plaza on BBD (south of S.R. 56) on Aug. 6 (photo above). Pasco tax collector Mike Fasano’s new office in Wesley Chapel officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the WCCC inside ComPark 75 (located at 4610 Pet Lane, off Wesley Chapel Blvd., just south of the Tampa Aero Park) on Aug. 4. The ceremony

was attended by more than 100 people, who filled the seats at the full-service office that is the only of its kind in the state because it is open on Saturdays. Fasano was not the only elected official in attendance, as Pasco commissioners Ted Schrader and Henry Wilson and county administrator Michele Baker came out to help cut the ribbon and give Wesley Chapel (and many New Tampa ) residents close access to car registrations, driver’s licenses and all of the other numerous services that now are available in our area. Fasano stressed how proud he was of his staff and the county for being able to open the office for less than $1 mil-

lion by leasing space instead of building from scratch. For more info about the new office, including a list of services available, visit PascoTaxes.com. Meanwhile, Jersey Mike’s (1662 BBD) also opened to a full house of WCCC Ambassadors and visitors, with sandwich and cookie samples. Putting a different spin on the traditional ribboncutting, Jersey Mike’s sub paper was cut (instead of red ribbon) to commemorate the opening of the sub shop in the Shoppes at New Tampa. For info, call 973-0600 or visit JerseyMikes.com. Unfortunately, the opening of the new Walmart Store #3418 (28500 S.R. 54, Wesley Chapel) and ribbon cutting at the Wesley Chapel Montessori School (26831 Lexington Oaks Blvd.) both

took place on Aug. 13, after our press time for this issue. • Still to come this month is the Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting of Pure Barre New Tampa (18091 Highwoods Preserve Pkwy., off BBD) on Saturday, August 23, 7 p.m. For info, call 866-7873. Angry Chair Brewing Deal

If you like craft beer, you soon will be able to taste some from some of Wesley

Chapel’s own local brewers a few miles south of New Tampa in Seminole Heights. Located on N. Florida Ave. in a circa 1940s building, the owners of Angry Chair — Wesley Chapel residents Ryan Dowdle and Shane Mozur, as well as brewer Ben Romano — have signed a distribution deal with Brown Distributing, which distributes more than 1,500 different products, including craft, domestic & import beers, wines and spirits. With a wide variety of restaurants and art show venues, the Seminole Heights area is less than 15-20 minutes down I-275 from New Tampa and worth the drive. Angry Chair Brewing is located at 6401 N. Florida Ave. For more info, visit Angry Chair Brewing’s page on Facebook.com. — GN & MW

Tampa Bay Comic Con Rocks The Tampa Convention Center! I’d be lying if I said I have visited the last two Tampa Bay Comic Con conventions because I’m dying to wait on line to get an autograph from a star of the X-Men movies or from HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” I go to Comic Con, held Aug. 1-3 this year at the beautiful Tampa Convention Center (which definitely increased attendance by like three-fold), to see how creative people can be with their costumes. Those who read our website may have seen me dressed as The Green Hornet at last year’s Tampa Comic Con and, while I wasn’t able to really spend as much time at this year’s event as I’d like, I thought I’d share some of the best costumes I photographed during my short visit. Pretty impressive, right? And, this is just a sampling of the pics I now have posted on NTNeighborhoodNews.com. Hopefully, I’ll have more time to visit next year — and maybe see some of you in costume — next year. For more info, visit TampaBayComicCon.com! — GN
