By Gary Nager We wish we had the space to give props to all 640 graduates of Wesley Chapel’s two outstanding high schools, Wiregrass Ranch High (WRH) & Wesley Chapel High (WCH), but we are proud to display some of the outstanding photos taken at the commencement proceedings of both schools by Tony Masella and Faith Jordan-Masella, of the award-winning (more on this below) website, Our TownFla.com.

Wiregrass Ranch High graduated 400 seniors, led by Valedictorian Taylor Flitt and co-Salutatorians William Pujals and Sarah Wyper. The school’s commencement was held at the University of South Florida Sun Dome on June 5 and principal Ray Bonti’s school won Pasco County’s All-Sports Trophy as the top all-around athletic program in the county, after taking home tennis State titles in doubles and singles and an individual track State title, as well as several District and Region crowns.

WRH’s Odyssey of the Mind team also was a State champ and finished

fourth of 46 teams at the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals at Michigan State University in East Lansing.

Also on June 5, Wesley Chapel High honored its 240 graduates of 2010 at Idlewild Baptist Church in Lutz, where first-year principal Carin Nettles presented plaques to co-Valedictorians Chantel Houston and Brittany Troast and Salutatorian Christian Rodriguez.

Ulrich Family Remembered

The August primary will include a run-off election between incumbent commissioner Pat Mulieri and challenger Ken Littlefield, both Republicans, for the District 2 BOCC seat, whose jurisdiction includes most of the Wesley Chapel area. Mulieri, who is 72, has held the seat since 1994; the former English professor at Pasco-Hernando Community College currently serves as the Board’s chairwoman.

Father’s Day Is Supposed To Be A Happy Occasion, But...

As I celebrated Father’s Day with my two sons a couple of weekends ago, I reflected again on how lucky I am. My kids are healthy and doing well and Jake, my younger son, just graduated from Wharton High in New Tampa — and I had a great couple of days with my family and friends for the event.

Plus, business is great (despite the economy), my employees are happy (despite who they work for) and even though the weather is already brutally hot, I’m actually able to enjoy it a little.

In other words, I should be the happiest guy in the world. So, why am I more than a little sad these days?

For one thing, I’m pretty sure I felt my heart stop when managing editor Michael Smith handed me a news brief he had written from a press release about a fatal accident on June 3 S.R. 54. It took me about a second to realize that the 27-year-old Kristen Myers named in the accident (see page 5), who lost control of her vehicle and was killed when her car crossed into oncoming traffic, was a friend and advertiser of mine who owned and operated the Paws & Claws Pet Grooming service on the same road.

All I can say is that another piece of my heart has broken off. I send my condolences and best wishes to Kristen’s mom and her entire family and of course, to Wesley Chapel resident Maria Sanchez and the young members of her family injured in that crash.

But, just as the death of someone you care about makes you want to hug your kids and thank God every day for your life and health, I feel at least a little bittersweet about this issue’s first installment of our exclusive “Summer ‘Staycation’ Spectacular,” a multi-issue tour of hotels and resorts located within a short drive of Wesley Chapel.

There’s no doubt that the hotels mentioned in this issue are all beautiful and well worth a visit anytime, but I’m sure the hotels in Louisiana, Alabama and the Florida panhandle that are being devastated by the unbelievably still-gushing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico are (or were) equally lovely.

Perhaps unlike most Americans, I don’t blame British Petroleum for the spill itself, although there’s also no doubt in my mind that BP has allowed millions of additional barrels since the explosion, barrels that didn’t have to still be spewing from a mile below the surface of the earth, to continue to destroy the Gulf ecosystem out of nothing more than simple greed.

Nope, I blame our own government for the disaster itself, as oil companies here were and are still basically being given free reign to do as they want with regards to these deep water

wells, without being forced to include fail-safes to shut off the wells in the event of such a disaster. I’m also sickened by the thought that there still has been no call by President Obama or Congress to force the oil companies to add such shut-down capabilities to prevent future tragedies of this type.

But, this isn’t at all a partisan issue to me. Yes, President Bill Clinton and President Obama are Democrats, but President Bush is a Republican and apparently none of them had the cojones to stand up to BP and the other oil giants to force them to protect the environment that is not only an impor-

tant part of my life (and my family’s), but is equally as important to our economy and our way of life as any company or industry in the country.

Yes, I am furious that the oil is still spewing — and the disaster worsens both our economic and our natural habitat prospects every day — but I am sadder to think that there is nothing you, I or any “average” American can do except continue to watch it happen.

It’s the same feeling of hopelessness I feel when someone I care about passes away...and certainly no way for an otherwise happy Dad to have to “celebrate” Father’s Day.

W ESLEY C HAPEL Couple Arrested In String Of Car Thefts & Burglaries

A Land O’Lakes couple has been arrested and charged in connection with numerous auto burglaries and thefts in Pasco and Hillsborough counties. According to reports, Anthony Cabrera, 29, and his girlfriend, 24-yearold Majestica Santillan, were both driving stolen vehicles on June 23, when they were spotted by deputies who were staking out a home in Land O’Lakes where the couple was renting a room. Santillan was arrested after Anthony crashing the vehicle Cabrera she was driving during a short chase, while Cabrera managed to elude capture for several hours, but he also was arrested on June 25.

Authorities say Santillan was first arrested on June 14, Majestica when witnesses called Santillan in reports of a prowler in Meadow Pointe. After being charged with loitering and prowling, Santillan was released, but police later determined that some of the property she was carrying at the time, including a GPS unit and a camera, had been stolen during an auto burglary, which then led to the stakeout.

Police found additional stolen items in the two vehicles that the couple were driving, including a rifle and other police equipment that was stolen from an off-duty deputy’s vehicle in Plant City on June 15, and additional stolen property was found in the home where they were staying.

At our press time, Cabrera was being held in the Land O’Lakes jail under $54,000 bond, on charges of

News Briefs grand theft of a motor vehicle and armed burglary, while Santillan was being held without bail for burglary, grand theft motor vehicle, resisting arrest without violence, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and violation of probation.

Writer’s Disappearance Is Still A Mystery

The Zephyrhills Police Department (ZPD), the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) are all working together to solve the disappearance of a missing Zephyrhills man who officials now believe may have been murdered.

In the latest development, FDLE investigators are analyzing human remains that were discovered in the Angus Valley area of Wesley Chapel in early June to see if they might be related to the case.

Stephen Perry, 56, who was known for writing several episodes of the 1980s TV cartoon series “Thundercats,” as well as other programs and comic books, was last heard from by friends in early May. On May 16, Perry’s van was Stephen Perry discovered abandoned in the parking lot of a North Tampa hotel after guests noticed a foul odor coming from the vehicle. Investigators found a severed arm nearby, but the results of DNA tests to determine whether it was Perry’s have not yet been completed.

Then, on June 2, PCSO deputies found more human remains wrapped in a tarp in a wooded area near Foamflower Blvd. (off Old Pasco Rd.). Those remains also are undergoing DNA testing by the FDLE and the Pasco-Pinellas Medical Examiner’s Office. A FDLE spokesperson said that definitive test

results may not be available for several weeks.

Although no arrests have been made in the case, Perry’s two former roommates — husband and wife James and Roxanne Davis, both of whom have lengthy arrest records — have been named as persons of interest in the case and are currently being held in the Land O’Lakes jail on unrelated charges.

Two Wesley Chapel Residents Killed In Separate Crashes

Two residents of Wesley Chapel died last month in separate automobile accidents on I-75 and S.R. 54.

In the first, which took place just after 5 p.m. on June 3, Kristen M. Myers, 27 (see page 3), was traveling westbound on S.R. 54 near River Glen Blvd. when she veered into the eastbound lanes in an attempt to pass slower moving traffic, according to a report issued by the Florida Highway Patrol Kristen (FHP). As she did so, Myers however, she lost control of her 1998 Trans Am, which then began spinning. Myers’ vehicle then struck the front end of a 2005 Chevy SUV driven by 39-year-old Marcia Sanchez, who also is a Wesley Chapel resident.

When the two vehicles collided, Myers, who was wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected from her car, which then came to a stop on the shoulder of S.R. 54. Myers passed away as a result of her injuries, while Sanchez and her two minor passengers were transported to St. Josephs Hospital in Tampa, where she was listed in critical condition and the children were listed as serious.

An investigation into the crash, including whether alcohol was a factor, was still ongoing at press time.

Five days later, 65-year-old John W. Gross of Wesley Chapel was killed

in a single-car accident that occurred at around 2 a.m. on June 8. According to an FHP report, Gross was heading south on I-75 in a 2000 Chevy Corvette when he also lost control of the vehicle just south of the S.R. 52 exit. The Corvette left the roadway and began spinning in the wet grass, the report says, and the rear of the vehicle hit a tree. Gross was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by Pasco Fire Rescue paramedics. According to the report, Gross also was wearing a seat belt, but FHP says the results of a toxicology exam are pending.

TECO Lineman Dies In Power Line Accident

A longtime employee of the Tampa Electric Co. (TECO) passed away a day after coming into contact with a high-tension power line while working in New Tampa.

According to reports, John Hudson, 39, who had worked for the utility company for 19 years, was working on overhead power lines from an insulated bucket lift in front of the Shell gas station in the area of Dona Michelle Dr. and Bruce B. Downs Blvd. at around 10 a.m. on June 7 when he accidentally touched the 7,620-volt line.

Hudson was rendered unconscious by the jolt, which also caused severe burns over a large portion of his body, and he was lowered to the ground by co-workers, who began administering CPR until paramedics from Tampa Fire Rescue Station #20 in Tampa Palms arrived minutes later.

Hudson was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where he was stabilized before being airlifted to Tampa General Hospital (TGH). But, after being listed in critical condition, Hudson succumbed to his injuries the following evening, according to a TGH spokesperson.

emonies, one Freedom High student and an accomplice decided that spray paint was a better way to leave their mark on the campus before departing for the summer.

According to a report issued by the Tampa Police Department (TPD), officers were alerted to the vandalism at the school campus on Commerce Park Dr. in Tampa Palms by a pair of witnesses, who spotted Christopher Ell, 17, a student at the school, and William Chaplin, 18, who was not a Freedom student, lurking around the campus at around 3 a.m. on June 26.

As officers responded to the scene, they saw the pair of teens, both of whom are Lutz residents, driving down Commerce Park Blvd. at a high rate of speed in a pickup truck with its headlights turned off. After stopping the truck, officers noted that at least one of the teens had paint on his hands. The pair explained that the damage they had done — which included spray painting vulgar language on several buildings and throwing toilet paper into some trees — was just a “senior prank.”

School administrators were not amused, however, as a spokesman for the Hillsborough County School District said that the damage done by the pair was estimated at between $1,000$2,000 and took school maintenance workers several hours to clean up.

Chaplin was released from custody after posting a bond of $4,250, while no further information was available about Ell, who was processed at the Hillsborough County Juvenile Assessment Center.

Flatwoods Park Scheduled For Controlled Burns

If you see smoke rising into the air while looking south over the next several months, chances are that there’s no cause for alarm, because the Southwest Florida Water Management District (aka Swiftmud) will be conducting “controlled, prescribed burns” during

June, July, August and September on the District’s Lower Hillsborough Wilderness Preserve in Hillsborough County, including Flatwoods Park and the Oak Ridge Equestrian Area.

The Lower Hillsborough Wilderness Preserve is located just south of Morris Bridge Rd. and just east of I-75, approximately three miles northeast of Temple Terrace. Approximately 1,000 acres of land will be burned in small, manageable units, a spokesman for the District said, adding that the burns are a part of routine maintenance of lands managed by Swiftmud.

According to District land manager Kevin W. Love, burns are conducted to mimic natural fire cycles under a controlled situation. The object is to avoid uncontrolled wildfires in the parks and enhance the area’s natural conditions by maintaining the ecological and wildlife habitat values. Prescribed burns are only conducted when weather conditions allow the objectives to be met while minimizing the impacts to the public.

Love added that every effort will be made to ensure that smoke will not affect homes or highways. However, he also said that drivers should exercise caution in case smoke does lead to reduced visibility on the area’s local roads and highways.

People enjoying the use of the park also should be aware that prescribed burns may be in progress during their

visit and be prepared to yield to fire management vehicles and equipment.

Recreationists should stay on designated trails only and certain park entrances and trails may be temporarily closed while the burns are being conducted.

Swiftmud owns and manages approximately 436,000 acres of environmentally sensitive lands for water resource and natural systems protection.

Parks like Flatwoods, which does receive more than 200,000 visitors per year, are considered to be “passive” recreation areas, with biking/hiking trails and limited recreational facilities.

Continued from page 1 many area residents as well, having served as the State Representative for District 61, which includes parts of both Hillsborough and Pasco counties (including all of Wesley Chapel), from 1999-2006. The 64-year-old Wesley Chapel resident left the legislature after he was appointed to the state Public Service Commission by then-Gov. Jeb Bush, but that appointment was overturned by incoming Gov. Charlie Crist after his election. However, Gov. Crist later appointed Littlefield executive director of the Florida Statewide Advocacy Council, a position that he still holds.

When he filed to run against Mulieri, Littlefield said in a statement that he wanted to “create policy that promotes and proPat tects a better qualMulieri ity of life in Pasco County.” Mulieri, meanwhile, says that she is running again because she wants to see some of the causes that she has championed,

such as promoting business growth and tourism in the county, finally come to fruition.

Whoever wins the primary election will face environmental activist Clay Colson of Ken Land O’Lakes in Littlefield the November General Election.

Over the past decade, Colson has often squared off with the Pasco BOCC and other county officials over development, most recently in opposition to the Cypress Creek Town Center mall in Wesley Chapel.

On the statewide level, the August Primary also will include a run-off between incumbent Will Weatherford (R-Wesley Chapel) and Tampa businessman Kevin Wright for the District 61 seat in the Florida House of Representatives, with the winner to face Wesley Chapel resident Elena McCullough; and a run-off between Florida District 47 Rep. Kevin Ambler and Hillsborough County commissioner Jim Norman, both of whom hope to move into the Florida Senate District 12 seat being vacated by Victor Crist. The winner of that primary will face a pair of

write-in candidates, Derek Crabb of Odessa and Kimberly Renspie of Tampa, in the general election.

Under state rules, only voters who are registered members of politiClay cal parties may vote Colson for their respective party’s candidates in a primary election, and only candidates of their registered party will be on their ballot. However, if all candidates for an office have the same party affilia-

tion and the winner will have no opposition in the general election, all qualified voters, regardless of party affiliation, may vote in the primary election for that office.

Corley says that sample ballots will be available on the county Supevisor of Elections website, PascoVotes.com, 25-30 days prior to the election. There’s Still Time To Cast Your Vote For Wesley Chapel’s ‘Mayor’ While the “real” elections won’t get under way for another couple of months (see cover story), the race to choose a new Honorary Mayor of Wesley Chapel is just about winding down.

Although the unincorporated Wesley Chapel area doesn’t have any actual elected officials, each year the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce (WCCC) sponsors a friendly competition to “elect” an honorary mayor, with dollars donated to charity taking the place of votes.

This year, the winner of the position, whose primary duties are to preside over new business ribbon cuttings and other community events, will be named at the Chamber’s July Monthly Mixer, which will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 15, at the Hampton Inn & Suites (2740 Cypress Ridge Rd., off S.R. 56).

Rather than campaigning for votes, the candidates for Honorary Mayor have been working throughout the spring to raise money for their designated charities, with each dollar they collect counted as one vote, and while there won’t be many more opportunities to meet and greet the candidates prior to the Mixer, there still is time for you to learn more about them and cast your votes through the Chamber’s website, WesleyChapelChamber.com.

Meet The Candidates

Theresa Jacobs, a broker with Keller Williams’ New Tampa office, was elected as Honorary Mayor of Wesley Chapel last year and says she had so Theresa much fun getting out Jacobs and meeting people that she decided to make another run for the title this year.

“It’s been a very rewarding experience,” says Jacobs, a single mother of two who moved to the area from Georgia seven years ago this month. She says she was first attracted to Wesley Chapel because an old friend from school moved here, but she likes it because it is a growing area that still has a smalltown atmosphere.

“I believe that Wesley Chapel is the best place to live, work and raise a family,” she says. The charity that Jacobs is supporting through her candidacy is Habitat for Humanity.

Meanwhile, business and marketing strategist Miroslav Beck also has lived in Wesley Chapel with his wife and three children for about seven years. He says that he was more active in the Chamber when he first arrived in the area and was trying to promote his video production company, but got so

busy that he stopped attending events until about a year ago.

“The Chamber really helped me get my start in Wesley Chapel,” he says, “so I was surprised to see how much Miroslav Beck turnover they were having.”

That’s why, Beck says, he got involved with the Chamber again and decided to run for Honorary Mayor, because he felt that his new business, No B.S. Tampa Bay, which provides consulting and marketing and business advice for entrepreneurs, could help those who are looking to start businesses of their own in the area.

“I think it would be a nice way to introduce the new business strategies that are out there,” Beck says.

Beck’s charity is Support the Troops, Inc., which provides food, personal items and other supplies to U.S. military personnel overseas.

Candidate Debbie Yoerg is the has been a Wesley Chapel resident the longest of the candidates, having lived in the area since 1973. She and her husband Richard have four sons ranging in age from 16 to 22, and Debbie says she also sees the Honorary Mayor’s race as way to promote both the area

and her business as an independent marketer of health and wellness products with the Trump Network.

“I decided to call my campaign group the ‘Think Big and Dream Team,’ because its my Debbie Yoerg passion to see our Wesley Chapel community fulfill its dreams,” she says.

Debbie’s charity is Big Brothers/ Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, and she’s planning one final campaign event, a party at the same Hampton Inn & Suites on Thursday, July 8, 7 p.m.-11 p.m. Tickets cost $20 per person or $30 per couple in advance, or $25 per person at the door, which includes music, food and beverages and raffle prizes. Teen Driver Challenge

Thursday-Friday, July 15-16 – The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) is again offering the Florida Sheriff’s Association Teen Driver Challenge for teen drivers. The two-day course features a four-hour classroom session the first day and an eight-hour driving course the second day. Only students who possess a valid operator’s license may participate in the driving portion, but the classroom portion is open to students with both learner permits and operator licenses.

In the driving portion of the instruction, students will operate their vehicles on a closed course and learn many of maneuvers taught to police officers. The classroom portion is required in order for students to receive parking permits at their respective high schools during the 2010-11 school year. Sports Briefs Academy At The Lakes’ Isner Makes Tennis History Arbet Earns Scholarship John Isner, who lives in Tampa and trains at Saddlebrook Resort & Spa Tampa in Wesley Chapel, made tennis history last month after participating in the longest men’s professional tennis match ever played.

The match, which lasted a total of 11 hours and 5 minutes spread out over three days, was in the first round of the 2010 Wimbledon Championships, where Isner faced off against unseeded Nicolas Mahut of France. After starting the match on the afternoon of June 22, the two men split the first four sets, 64, 3-6, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (3), but neither could gain an advantage in the fifth and deciding set. The match was suspended twice because of darkness, once after the first four sets, and then again on June 23, midway through the fifth set.

Since Wimbledon rules don’t allow for a tiebreaker in the fifth set, the score of the deciding set was 70-68, as Isner managed to break Mahut’s serve for the first time in the set and then capitalize on the break opportunity to earn the victory with a backhand winner down the line.

Academy at the Lakes (AatL) senior Shane Arbet has been awarded a Trustee Scholarship by Allegheny College in Meadville, PA. Arbet, who lives in Land O’Lakes, plans to attend Allegheny and play on the college’s football team. The Trustee Scholarship is an achievement-based award that is guaranteed for four years of study at Allegheny. The scholarship recognizes academic excellence, as well as achievements in extracurricular and

even leadership activities.

At AatL, Arbet lettered in football, soccer, basketball, tennis, track, and swimming. He earned an unweighted GPA of 3.30 and was a member of Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honor Society). He also volunteered for several charitable groups as part of his community service requirements.

Lemon Fashion Offers Affordable Good Looks In Wiregrass

By Melissa O’Brien Pick up a fashion magazine like Vogue or Glamour and you’ll find pages and pages of “must have” fashions — fun, flattering outfits that look like a million bucks. Unfortunately, at some major retail stores, looking that good can cost a small fortune, too.

So, the question is, where can a fashionable person find the latest styles but not have to surrender the better part of their paycheck to wear them? The place is Lemon Fashion at The Shops at Wiregrass mall off of S.R. 56 and Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. – a clothing store with fashions that only look like you paid a lot for them.

“Our key is having great clothes at economical prices,” says owner Vioma Lorenzo. “Most people who first come here come in because they like the displays in the window, but they are even happier when they see how great the prices are for such cute clothes.”

At Lemon Fashion, customers will find everything from jeans to formal dresses, purses, accessories and jewelry.

“We don’t have designer labels, but our look is still a designer look,” says Vioma.

“We try to keep everything fresh and new with new clothing shipments coming in weekly and we offer clothes you

will not find at every other store. We like to call it semi-exclusive clothes for a very non-exclusive price.”

Lemon Fashion in the Shops in November of 2009. “It was a life-long dream of mine to own a fashion store,” says Lorenzo, who lives in Northwood with her husband Maurice. “I have a friend, Larissa Rojas, in the Dominican Republic who owns stores there and I have worked with her for many years. When I moved here, I wanted to find the right location and duplicate the success of her stores down there.”

Maurice Lorenzo, Vioma’s husband who works on the business end of Lemon Fashion, says their partner Larissa had about 20-25 similar stores in the Dominican Republic and wanted to invest in the US. “We decided to open the first Lemon Fashion store in Tampa because all of our market research pointed us to this area,” says Maurice. “We also looked at South Florida and do plan to expand there and to other Florida locations.

We’re also looking at Chicago.”

Maurice says they chose The Shops at Wiregrass because of the open air feel of the mall and the entertainment and activities that take place there. The Shops is a Main St.-style, pedestrian-friendly

“People come here to have a great experience. It is a great outdoor mall, petfriendly and definitely conducive to shopping. One way we can tell our store is a success is by the number of our lime green bags we see people carrying around the mall. You’ll see them everywhere.”

Maurice attributes the success of their businesses in an economic downturn because of, “Experience experience, experience. Our model has been very successful for about twelve years in the Caribbean and our partner has learned the business by trial and error.. It is important to know your target market and to always keep new items in the store so people keep coming back.”

“They always have things that the other stores don’t have,” says Bonner.

“They have very up-to-date-fashions and things you would expect to see in places like California. Their prices are very reasonable and I always get compliments on the clothes I buy there.”

She adds, “They always have a variety of things to choose from. They take their cues from the magazines and from the fashions I see on television.”

Brenda Fernandez, who lives in Land O’ Lakes, says the bright colors of the sign pulled her into the store.

“It is bright and attractive and breaks away from the monotony of some of the other stores,” says Brenda.

“I have purchased dresses, accessories, shirts — everything — there. I have a unique sense of style and nothing there is the same as in other stores. I have gotten to know Vioma and now, when I go shopping, I even help other customers accessorize. I love to shop and the prices and the clothes are very attractive and so unique compared with the other places in Wiregrass.”

Tampa Bay’s Summer Entertainment Begins To Heat Up!

MOSI Hosts CSI: The Experience

Through Monday, September 6 — This summer, visitors to MOSI, Tampa’s Museum of Science & Industry (4801 E. Fowler Ave.) can play the role of forensic scientists in the museum’s new traveling exhibition, “CSI: The Experience.” Inspired by the multitude of hit CBS-TV series, “CSI: The Experience” highlights the process of scientific inquiry and the real investigation techniques used to solve crimes.

Visitors are immersed in hands-on science in an exciting multimedia environment with dazzling special effects and characters direct from the CSI TV series. Developed by the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, with support from CBS Consumer Products and the National Science Foundation, “CSI: The Experience” maintains the spirit of the TV series and is for adults and youths ages 12 and above.

Friday, July 30 — Although he has said that he will not be participating in the planned upcoming Led Zeppelin reunion, Robert Plant has confirmed a twelve-city North American tour that features a new lineup of musicians performing as the Band of Joy, which is the outfit that Plant and the late John Bonham were members of before both joined Zeppelin. The Band of Joy features a diverse group of musicians, including vocalist Patty Griffin, multiinstrumentalist and vocalist Darrell Scott, the bass and vocals of Byron House, Marco Giovino on drums/percussion and vocals; and co-producer Buddy Miller, on guitar and vocals, and has produced a record, which will be released on the Rounder label in late summer or early fall. It is the first new material from Plant since 2007’s “Raising Sand,” his multi-platinum, 6-time Grammy-winning collaboration with Alison Krauss.

Wesley Chapel’s Shaun Hopper Is A ‘Fingerstyle’ Guitar Virtuoso!

By John Lieberman Although the classic rock guitarists of the 1960s and ‘70s — from Jimi Hendrix to Eric Clapton and Carlos Santana to Jimmy Page — changed music forever, there’s no doubt that there were other guitarists from that era (including James Taylor, Chet Atkins and Jim Croce) who also helped revolutionize a different style of guitar playing known as “fingerstyle” guitar. The rock legends who played in classic bands like Led Zeppelin and The Hendrix Experience were outstanding guitarists, but were each only responsible for the lead and/or rhythm guitar portions of the music they played.

Before there were rock bands, however, guitarists who used the fingers of their right hand independently to play the bass lines, percussion, melody and harmony portions of a song also revolutionized music — and fingerstyle guitar is making a comeback today.

Fingerstyle is both a longstanding classification as well as an evolving genre, continually advancing along with the virtuosity and imagination of its players. Tracing its roots back to classical music, fingerstyle is both a technique and a methodology which allows a performer to play several musical elements simultaneously.

The best way to understand fingerstyle guitar, aside from watching it performed live, is to search YouTube.com and sample a few artists. Many of the top fingerstyle players will typically cross over several genres at once, playing classical in one moment, blues, jazz or flamenco in the next.

For example start your search with: Tommy Emmanuel, an Australian guitarist who frankly defies description.

Other advanced players include Phil Keaggy, Laurence Juber, Pete Huttlinger, Doyle Dykes and Muriel Anderson, all of whom span several musical genres in their repertoires. Also on YouTube is child prodigy Sungha Jung, a 12 year old from South Korea.

Also among these virtuosos are Wesley Chapel’s own guitar prodigy (photo) Shaun Hopper (ShaunHopper .com) and Michael Martz of the new Deacon Blues Band, a popular New Tampa-based group. Both are members of the Tampa Bay Fingerstyle Guitar Guild, which was formed in 2005 by four founding members seeking to share their passion for this unique art.

The Guild’s mission was straightforward — to increase public awareness of this high art form, to enhance our culture by offering the public a higher standard of guitar musicianship, to build a fellowship of fingerpickers who

encourage and inspire fellow musicians and, last but not least, have a good time together. The Guild offers informal meetings and workshops, independent “showcases” and members of the Guild also may be hired to play at your events and the group will try to find the “best fit” of players to meet the specific needs of any performance/ event. Each member of the Guild’s performance roster has achieved at least an intermediate level of fingerstyle expertise and many are seasoned professionals. All of the equipment used is state-of-the-art and is set up specifically to meet the nuances of your room or setting.

Individual members of the Tampa Bay Fingerstyle Guitar Guild have played everything from local bar gigs to charitable events and have appeared everywhere from the former Soviet Union, Europe and the Vatican to New

York City, Chicago and throughout the Southeast & Midwest. By Gary Nager Although business tends to slow for many local businesses during the summer, things are still “hopping” in and around Wesley Chapel and New Tampa. Here’s the latest dining and drinking (responsibly, I hope) news.

Linkster’s Tap Room Opens New Tampa Location

We congratulate Jeff martin, the owner of The Brass Tap in the Shops at Wiregrass mall, who has announced plans to open a second location in the Westfield Brandon mall on S.R. 60 this fall (probably Sept. or Oct.).

The new Brass Tap will have the same look and feel as the existing location, with more than 60 beers on tap and more than 300 beers total, as well as fine wine and cigars. The new location also will allow patrons to bring in food from the fine new restaurants in the mall (as they can at Wiregrass), including a new Cheesecake Factory, a new Japanese steakhouse and sushi bar, California Pizza Kitchen, Sinigual Mexican Cuisine and others.

It took us a few weeks, but we have sampled the new Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, located in the same plaza as The Hungry Greek Restaurant on

Dickey’s, which claims to have become the largest BBQ chain in the U.S. in 2009 with the opening of its 160th store in 25 U.S. states, was originated in a single location in Dallas, TX,

by Travis Dickey in 1941, which means the franchise will celebrate its 60th birthday next year.

I have to admit that I really enjoyed my two-meat plate, especially the fall-off-the-bone BBQ pork ribs, which are sauced in the smoker, but not overly slathered with sauce. You can choose from sweet, spicy and Dickey’s original BBQ sauces and from great sides like green beans with bacon, Caesar salad, mac & cheese and more.

Although New Tampa has no shortage of full-liquor and beer/wine bars, one of the nicer places to watch the game on TV, shoot some pool or play the popular Cornhole bean bag toss game is the new Linskter’s Tap Room, located off Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. and Dona Michelle Dr., next to Ultracuts in the Highwoods Preserve area.

New Tampa owner John Ellwood says this is Linkster’s ninth Tampa Bay area location and it is definitely more upscale-looking than most neighborhood sports bars. It features super-premium liquor choices, plus many domestic, imported and micro-brewed beers on tap and in bottles.

Linkster’s, which first opened in Sarasota, also has locations in Brandon, Riverview, Lakeland and others and Ellwood says the place has been well received here in New Tampa.

“People definitely seem to appreciate all the TVs, the liquor choices and the fact we’re smoker-friendly,” says Ell-

wood. “We’re pretty happy so far.”

And, Ultracuts owner Eric Young says the bar “definitely has helped people feel better when we have a short wait for a haircut. I’ve heard ‘I’m just gonna grab a beer next door’ quite a bit since Linkster’s opened.”
