Outlet Mall, PHCC & Hospital To Be Pasco’s ‘Economic Engines!’

By Matt Wiley Economic growth in Pasco County is synonymous with the Wesley Chapel area. And, as more economic opportunities come to the area, such as the under-construction Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel (FHWC), the Tampa Prime Outlets at Cypress Creek Town Center and the Porter Campus of Pasco-Hernando Community College, thousands of jobs and tax dollars are making their way into our area, as well.

Pasco County administrator John Gallagher is among many local officvials excited about the influx of local jobs.

As previously reported in the Wesley Chapel Neighborhood News, Simon Property Group has announced plans to open an outlet mall similar to the Ellenton Prime Outlets, with a Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5th outlet store as

one of its staples. But, that won’t be the only store bringing jobs to the area.

Gallagher says that once the mall opens, which is currently expected to be sometime in 2014, it will bring more than 6,100 jobs to the Wesley Chapel/Lutz/Land O’Lakes area, which will ignite the local economy.

“If their estimates are true, it will bring a lot of jobs to (Wesley Chapel),” Gallagher says. “It will offer a lot of opportunities for young people in the area and definitely lower the (county’s) unemployment rate.”

Gallagher says that a staff member of his spoke with representatives from Simon recently who said that they would be submitting their plans for the development in the next 60-90 days.

And, not only will the outlet mall bring employment to thousands, he says, it also will bring more than $24

With the Republican National Convention (RNC) fast approaching, the Republican Party of Pasco County is preparing for this historic political event that will bring lots of national attention to the Tampa Bay area. A number of upcoming events are helping Republicans from all across Pasco, including Wesley Chapel, get excited for the RNC, which will be held at the end of August in downtown Tampa.

To further bolster excitement for

the RNC, the Republican Party of Pasco County is hosting Florida Governor Rick Scott as its keynote speaker at the group’s annual “Reagan Day Dinner” at Spartan Manor in New Port Richey on Friday, June 29.

“A lot of other elected officials will be showing up to attend that, too,” says Mike Moore, president of the Wesley Chapel Republican Club. “Any time you get access to the governor, it’s a great thing. Besides doing the speech, I’m sure he’ll be pretty accessible to people if they want to meet him, shake his hand or ask him a question.”

In past years, the Reagan Day Dinner has hosted other elected officials as featured speakers, such as U.S. Senator Marco Rubio and former Governor Jeb Bush. Moore says that the club’s recent and upcoming events are getting people “energized to volunteer.”

I love it when people tell me about their upcoming events, especially when they’re local residents and/or business owners putting an event in either New Tampa or Wesley Chapel. Unfortunately, many times, because we publish both our New Tampa and Wesley Chapel editions only once a month most months, with Wesley Chapel coming out two weeks after New Tampa, followed by another New Tampa edition two weeks later (and so on), we sometimes get caught with in-between dates for some events that make it impossible for us to either preview the event in a specific New Tampa or Wesley Chapel issue that comes out in time beforehand or to follow up the event within a reasonable timeframe after it takes place — or sometimes both.

That doesn’t mean we can’t cover that event, it just means that we may only be able to put the info about your event on our website (WCNeighborhoodNews.com) or that we may need you to provide information and pictures as promptly after the event as possible to get it in our next edition. And, we’re always happy to do so, as long as we have print space available and receive your info on a timely basis.

FDOT Hosts ‘Open House’ To Give Public Update On Projects

By Matt Wiley Gusts of wind blow through the breezeway of the recently opened northbound I-75 rest area between S.R 56 and S.R. 54, as representatives of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) showed off the final plans for the I-75 and I-275 widening projects, which have been under way for a more than a year now.

During the FDOT Open House on May 22, the public was given a peek at the projects that can currently be seen as construction along the sides of both busy interstates. Although there was not a formal presentation, several projects were on display in the form of presentation boards that gave aerial views of what the future of the interstates will look like.

“We usually have (these open houses) after construction begins,” said FDOT spokesperson John McShaffrey. “Once construction starts, the projects become more ‘real’ to folks.”

The biggest project on display was the widening of the 11.4-mile stretch of I-75 from south of Fowler Ave. to S.R. 56 from four lanes on

each side to six lanes in both directions. In addition, to make it easier for drivers to merge onto the interstates, the sections near the interchanges of Fowler, Fletcher and BBD will be widened to eight lanes. The $95-million project began in October of 2011 and should be finished by the spring of 2016. McShaffrey said that this project is going to be completed before it was initially slated to begin, as it was not in the five-year plan.

According to FDOT, in addition to widening the interstate, the project also includes improvements to lighting and drainage, resurfacing of existing lanes, construction of retention ponds and the installation of Intelligent Transportation System components including cameras, vehicle detectors and message signs to give important information to drivers.

Another project that was on display was the widening of I-75 from south of S.R. 56 to north of C.R. 54, in which the 4.3-mile stretch of interstate is being widened from its current four lanes total to four lanes in each direction (eight total). The $22.5-million project began in March of 2011 and should be completed by the end

Information also was provided on currently unfunded projects which will, in the future, widen I-75 to at least three lanes in both directions all the way north, through both Pasco and Hernando Counties, to the Florida Turnpike. Since they are unfunded, these projects will be added to the FDOT's “five-year work plan” only as funding becomes available. McShaf-

frey said that the funding for these interstate projects has come from “gas taxes.”

As far as I-275 is concerned, the 5.7-mile stretch between Bearss Ave. and the apex with I-75 interchange is being widened to three lanes in each direction. The $20.6-million project began in January 2011 and is on schedule for a fall 2012 completion.

Bruce B. Downs Construction Still Creeping Along, But On Track

By Matt Wiley Construction continues, as traffic patterns change and strange metal structures rise from the dust along multiple sections of Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. in New Tampa.

Wesley Chapel commuters may have noticed a new traffic pattern along BBD just south of I-75 at Commerce Palms Blvd., as vehicles are now traveling northbound along newly reconstructed lanes, so construction can begin on the southbound stretch.

“We switched the northbound traffic to the new lanes so that we can remove the temporary lanes in the median,” says Scott Passmore, an engineer with KCI Technologies, the engineering firm heading the BBD widening project. “That traffic configuration will remain in effect until the project is complete.”

Passmore says that in that section of the construction project, storm drainage also needs to be installed before reconstruction of the southbound BBD lanes can begin. But, he says, that phase of the project is still on track to be completed by late this year.

“It’s a support for a Dynamic Message Sign (DMS),” says Passmore.

“There will be one installed north and south of I-75 on BBD by the time construction is complete.” Just as in some sections of I-75 and I-275, DMS's are electronic signs programmed with important information drivers should know about the

driving conditions on the interstate and are part of the state's Sunguide Traffic Management System, which, according to its website, helps to

provide motorists with reliable traveler information.

Whether it is a message from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) alerting drivers of a large accident and urging them to seek an alternate route, or a message from law enforcement warning drivers of an Amber alert, Passmore says that these signs are installed to keep drivers aware of what is happening on the interstate.

The benefit of these signs, he says, is that drivers can see messages about driving conditions before they get onto the interstate. However, if the need arises, he says, messages about driving conditions on BBD could be delivered.

“There will be some cross-functionality between the city and FDOT, but the primary focus is on the interstate,” Passmore says.

Wesley Chapel Man Killed In New Tampa Car Crash

Clearwater Murder-Suicide Leaves Children Parentless

A Wesley Chapel man is dead after losing control of his vehicle and rolling off the road during the early hours of June 5.

According to the Tampa Police Department (TPD), just after midnight, 19-year-old William Gallagher, of the Country Walk community of Wesley Chapel, was driving with two passengers — 16-year-old Charles Trimbl of Tampa and 21-year-old Camron Davis, also of Wesley Chapel — when he lost control of his 1998 Honda coupe on Wild Tamarind Dr. in the K-Bar Ranch area of New Tampa near the Pasco County line.

Police say that when the car rolled, Gallagher was partially ejected from the vehicle and pinned underneath it. He was pronounced dead at the scene when help arrived. Trimbl was taken to Florida Hospital Tampa with non-life-threatening injuries.

Davis, the eldest in the vehicle, fled the scene.

The accident is still under investigation, but, according to TPD, speed is thought to have been a factor in it.

Two Wesley Chapel children will grow up without their parents following a domestic dispute that turned fatal in Clearwater on June 5.

According to the Clearwater Police Department (CPD), around 3:45 a.m. on June 5, Eugene Agbebaku, 33, of Wesley Chapel broke into the Clearwater condo at 1279 Abbey Crescent Lane where his estranged wife Ingrid, 32, was staying. Once inside, Agbebaku shot Ingrid to death using a Russian-made assault rifle before walking across the street and shooting himself in front of her parent’s condo in the same complex.

CPD says that the couple was in the process of getting a divorce and was supposed to appear in court that Tuesday. Ingrid had been staying at her grandmother’s condo with the couple’s two children, ages five and 22 months. Ingrid had recently been denied a restraining order against her estranged husband.

CPD has ruled the case a murdersuicide and is not actively searching for any additional suspects.

S.R. 56 Businesses ‘Hammered’ By Barber Nirfa Diaz doesn’t usually get called to come into her Nirfa’s Beauty Salon at 1 a.m. June 16, however, was not a normal morning.

After receiving a call that her salon, located on S.R. 56, had been entered, she drove to the shop to find several Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) deputies already at the scene.

According to the PCSO report, Tampa resident and barber William Stevenson Bateman, 59, of 4720 El Dorado Dr., broke into Nirfa’s Salon around 12:30 a.m. on June 16, using a hammer to break the glass front door. Once inside, he stole a cash box containing an William Stevenson undisclosed Bateman amount of money.

He also had already broken into Planet Beach, the business located directly next to Nirfa’s, stole a computer valued at $1,500 and fled the scene in his blue Dodge minivan. PCSO deputies pursued the vehicle and arrested Bateman, who was charged with two counts each of unarmed burglary of an

occupied conveyance, grand theft and possession of burglary tools after deputies confirmed the crimes that had been caught on Nirfa’s security camera.

Roger Wolf, the owner of the adjacent Wolf’s Den restaurant in the same plaza, said the PCSO deputies, including a helicopter unit and several PCSO cruisers, were still at the scene looking for Bateman when the restaurateur arrived to do his breakfast prep work sometime after 3 a.m.

“How unlucky was he (Bateman) that a deputy was circling around the plaza at that moment with his window rolled down and heard the glass breaking?,” said Wolf. — MW

Moore says that there are plans in the works for a potential office in Wesley Chapel, although a location has not yet been chosen.

“We want to get people involved throughout the County,” Moore says.

“It’s tough for people to drive all the way to New Port Richey or Dade City.

We want to make (an office) accessible for everybody.”

Moore says that the office will serve as a hub for making phone calls on behalf of the Romney campaign, as well as a meeting place for when the group begins doing “walks” later this year, in which they go door-to-door to try to persuade people to vote Republican in the upcoming election.

“We need people big time for phone-banking during the convention,” he says.

Other volunteer opportunities are available as well, including greeting delegates at the airport or being “runners,” people who help get the delegates to and from the RNC. “We’re going to see a lot of impact in Wesley Chapel,” Moore says. “We’re going to

utilize our economic opportunities.”

More specifically, he means that many volunteers will work as “hosts,” taking delegates to local attractions, such as the Shops at Wiregrass Mall and local restaurants during their time in the area during the Convention.

packed, as hundreds of Democrats wrapped around the plaza, trying to get tickets for President Obama’s June 22 appearance at Hillsborough Community College in Ybor City.

“Jobs” Continued from page 1 will be key to jobs because of its proximity to the other economic opportunities in the Wiregrass Ranch/Wesley Chapel area. Not only will the campus provide employment opportunities for faculty and staff once it’s completed, it will also open doors to potential careers for those who attend the school.

“The students can find work at the mall,” Mulieri explains. “At the same time, employees at the mall can go to school at PHCC to upgrade their work skills. One program that will be offered (at the school) is nursing. The graduates of that program can then work at the hospital. It’s a circle.”

The soon-to-be-completed 200,000 sq.-ft., 80-bed FHWC, located just north of the Shops at Wiregrass Mall on BBD, has been posting batches of jobs on its website for the past couple of weeks.

Executive director of the FHWC Foundation Connie Bladon says that the new medical center will provide more than 400 jobs to the local economy. “We’re posting jobs in batches because there are so many that need to be filled,” she says. “We’re really just starting to hire.”

Bladon says that most of the jobs that the hospital will bring to the com-

munity will be filled locally, so that people can work where they live and not have to endure a long commute. A small number of jobs may be transfers from other Florida Hospital facilities in the area, but Bladon says most positions, including doctors, nurses, clinical and accounting positions will be filled by residents of the local community.

FHWC’s adjacent 100,000-sq.-ft. medical office building/wellness center also will have jobs that need to be filled.

Financial services giant Raymond James was offered a $10-million incentive package by the Pasco County Board of County Commissioners to open a campus in Wesley Chapel (reportedly on S.R. 56, east of the mall) in October 2011 that could potentially bring 750 jobs to our area by 2024, 100 of which could be offered locally as soon as 2014.

T. Rowe Price, another large financial investment firm, also has taken has notice of the Wesley Chapel area and shown interest in opening offices in what could become the new urban center of Pasco County.

Get Your Tile Floor’s Grout ‘Sealed & Delivered’ By Sir Grout!

by Sheryl Young Greg Lynch started his Sir Grout® franchise in Lutz two years ago. His company’s specialty is cleaning and sealing the grout in tile floors and backsplashes.

Lynch was in the insurance business for 18 years, after graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Marketing from New Hampshire College in Manchester (now called Southern New Hampshire University). So how did he end up taking this step?

“The company I had been working for transferred me here to Florida,” he says. “When the economy started failing, their business became unstable, so I started exploring for other things to do.”

While looking into having the floors in his own home done, Lynch came upon the Sir Grout® franchise.

Other grouting companies were beginning to offer multiple related services to stay afloat as the economy foundered, but he wanted someone who was remaining a grouting expert.

“And once the sealant is down, it dries in only 12 to 15 minutes,” Lynch adds. “The customer can walk on their floor after only 15 minutes, while other products can take as long

as two hours to dry fully.”

‘Appreciated’ Chamber Members Meet Wild Things In Dade City!

If you (or your child) love animals, you owe it to yourself to visit Dade City’s Wild Things (DCWT), the 22acre zoo located just 20-30 minutes or so from most of Wesley Chapel near the Pasco Hernando Community College campus in the heart of Dade City.

As a proud member and supporter of the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce, I was thrilled to be one of fewer than 200 people who got to attend the Chamber’s “Member Appreciation Night” at DCWT. We also were treated to free raffle prizes, a sumptuous buffet meal provided by my friend Ghada Jadallah of A Dash of Salt & Pepper on Cross Creek Blvd. in New Tampa and a modified walking tour of the monkeys, bison, ostriches, bears and the animals that so captivated me as a youngster — plenty of big cats.

DCWT has more than 200 species of animals, but I especially loved the zoo’s full-grown lions, tigers (including white tigers) and Florida panthers, as well as the 10-month-old lion “cub” named “Leonardo, King of Beasts,” and four amazingly cute two-monthold tiger cubs. The cubs get so close to you during DCWT’s awesome animal show — which we also got to enjoy — that you’re practically holding the cute critters in your lap.

New Restaurant Comings & Goings - Three of the eateries we told you about last issue — Baja Fresh (388-6898), the adjacent iCream Café (both located next to The Hungry Greek on BBD) and PDQ Fresh Tenders, Salads & Sandwiches on S.R. 56 (directly in front of Sam’s Club) have all opened and are already attracting interested customers.

I have to admit that PDQ’s crispy chicken tenders and hand-cut fries, zesty dipping sauces and amazing shakes are new guilty pleasures of mine, while Baja Fresh’s wahoo (not a misprint) tacos are a little less guilt-inducing. And, iCream’s space-age approach to providing the coldest ice cream, frozen yogurt and shakes, plus hot pudding desserts, all with all sorts of mixins and toppings, has to be tasted to really be believed.

Hopefully, the third time will be the charm for the location that previously was home to Santo’s Pizza & Pasta and more recently Drake’s Place, in the Pinebrook at The Grove plaza (on S.R. 54 west of I-75). The new restaurant is still also being called Drake’s Place, at least for now, but is under totally new ownership, with a new chef, karaoke and bike nights and a whole new, friendlier attitude.

And, in the bad news (at least to me) department, both the delicious Boardwalk Frozen Custard on S.R. 56 and the Aja Wiregrass restaurant and night club in the Shops at Wire-

grass mall, which attracted a nicely dressed mix of everyone from 20s to 60s, had closed before our press time.

We had not yet heard anything about possible replacements for either eatery.

And finally, the Pizza Kitchen (528-8777) has opened in the Cross Creek Center plaza on Cross Creek Blvd. (behind the Shell gas station) in New Tampa, in the space previously occupied by the Urban Culinary Café.

The pizza at the Pizza Kitchen is a thinner crust than my favorite New York-style pizza, but it’s still pretty tasty.

The restaurant also features dine-in, takeout, subs and salads.

Ribbon Cuttings & Mixers - It seems that there are fewer of these free events in the summer, but we still got to attend a couple before our p[ress time. Saffron Is Still The New Tampa Area’s Favorite Indian Cuisine!

By Gary Nager No, I’m still not going to tell you that Indian food is high on my list of favorites, but I will say this — if you’re not sure if you like Indian cuisine, you really should try Saffron Indian Cuisine, located in the Cross Creek Center plaza on Cross Creek Blvd. at Kinnan St. Owners Nimesh and Sunita Chheda will celebrate five years in business at the end of this year and there’s a lot of great reasons why the restaurant’s regulars keep coming back time and again.

started out only eating the chicken fingers and fries from Saffron’s kids menu, they soon graduated to the chicken butter Masala and chicken Tikka Masala. “They really love it here,” said the busy mom, who obviously was into Saffron’s spicier options herself.

Well, although I love some spicy foods, I will admit that I haven’t been able to graduate to the “Indian spicy” items on Saffron’s menu. My favorite starter is still the garlic Naan bread, which is topped with garlic and cilantro and baked in Saffron’s Tandoori oven. I also have enjoyed the meat samosa (triangular crispy pastries filled with meat and green peas) and definitely plan to try the chicken Kathi kabob rolls, which are sort of like a chunky grilled chicken taco with a soft wrap. But, whether you like a nice Mulligatawny stew, fried chicken, onion or even paneer (cottage cheese) pakoras or a Saffron special appetizer platter, you definitely can fill up fast on starters.

And of course, every time I visit Saffron, I have to still get the Tandoori oven lamb chops, which come out sizzling, like fajitas, and sitting atop equally sizzling onions and peppers. I get these tender chops mild-to-medium, but they are always delicious. I can’t eat

shrimp, but I do hear people rave about the spicy Tandoori shrimp all the time, too.

I also have enjoyed Saffron’s chicken butter Masala and chicken Madras (with coconut), the lamb Saagwala (which is lightly spiced and cooked in spinach) and the obviously fresh fish tikka Masala.
