States such as Mississippi and West Virginia have the two highest obesity rates in the United States but rank 45th and 25th in the number of weight-loss surgeries per capita.

These states also have two of the worst economies in the nation.

This is data from a recent study published in Obesity Week 2018 which is hosted by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and The Obesity Society (TOS).

New York, NYC. - December, 2018 -- Recent data suggests that the fewest bariatric surgeries occur in states that rank in the lower economic half of the country and three out of every five of these states don't include bariatric surgery as an essential health benefit.

Bariatric procedures are those that involve shrinking the stomach so a patient will lose weight by eating less food and is only recommend for morbidly obese individuals who have exhausted all other methods of weight loss.

There were 228,000 bariatric procedures performed in the United States in 2017 and yes the highest concentration of those procedures are performed in states with stronger state economies such as Washington, DC, Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts. These states all cover bariatric surgery as an essential health benefit. This also demonstrates the greater need for universal coverage for bariatric surgery.

OBESITY PREVALENCE IN 2017 VARIES ACROSS STATES AND TERRITORIES 

All states had more than 20% of adults with obesity.

20% to less than 25% of adults had obesity in 2 states (Colorado and Hawaii) and the District of Columbia.

25% to less than 30% of adults had obesity in 19 states.

30% to less than 35% of adults had obesity in 22 states, Guam, and Puerto Rico.

35% or more adults had obesity in 7 states (Alabama, Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and West Virginia).

The South (32.4%) and the Midwest (32.3%) had the highest prevalence of obesity, followed by the Northeast (27.7%), and the West (26.1%).

A Brief History of Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery: Weight loss surgery slowly started in the 1950s with the intestinal bypass, the connection of the upper and lower intestine (anastomosis), in order to bypass a large amount of the absorptive circuit. The resulting weight loss was created by the malabsorption of food.

In 1963 the Jejuno-colic Shunt was developed by Drs. J. Howard Payne, Lorent T. DeWind and Robert R. Commons to connect the colon to the upper small intestine. Mason (b.1920) and Dr. Chikashi Ito at the University of Iowa would lead to the original gastric bypass which improved and lessened the number of complications from the intestinal bypass.
