Making art out of glass EMILY BEGLey | STAFF REPORTER Color and simplicity are just a few of the elements that intrigue Darren Goodman, a 32-year-old artist based in Waynesville, Ohio. Goodman’s passion for the centuries-old craft of glassblowing inspired him to create a myriad of distinct and beautiful pieces.

“I’ve always had a fascination with glass,” Goodman said. “When I was young, I always looked at the little pieces of glass that were around our house. My parents aren’t very big art collectors or glass collectors, but there were some paper weights and little objects that always gave me a wonder about the material.”

Goodman started working with glass during his time at Bowling Green State University. He earned an art degree, with a specialization in glassblowing, after graduating in 2003.

Goodman established his own glassblowing studio with his father’s help in 2005. He taught others how to do it in his studio and began attending local craft shows. But as his work continued to evolve, Goodman decided to focus solely on his artwork.

“One thing kind of led to another, and I let go of lessons and I let go of the craft shows and started focusing on art,” he said.

Goodman’s process varies depending on the project he is working on, which means it could vary each day because he generally works on multiple projects at once.

“I like to work very intensely,” Goodman said. “I enjoy working very early in the morning — 3, 4, 5 a.m. — and I like to work past the sunset.”

This routine will continue for months at a time. After completing a project, he takes a break to invigorate himself, something he considers just as vital to his success as the early mornings and late nights.

“I take significant time — one, two, three months — and rejuvenate and reenergize myself to do that again,” he said. “I travel during this period and do other studying and exploring.”

The most challenging aspect of his work — besides scorching temperatures that reach more than 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit — is creating a piece he feels is his best.

“I always put my best in it, and I don’t know if it always shows in the end,” he said. “As a piece is finished, and I look at it, then the challenge is if I can truly say ‘this is good.’”

The Cincinnati Art Museum recently displayed one of Goodman’s collections.

His exhibit, “Trial by Fire,” opened Sept.

24, 2011 in the Sara M. and Michelle Vance Waddell Gallery, running until the end of the year.

The display included large-scale drips of glass up to 12 feet tall — pieces Goodman dubbed “Tears of Joy.” In addition, the exhibit featured a collection of bottles Goodman created as trophies for a Ferrari race. “[Ferrari] did unique trophies this year,” he said. “They asked me if I would be interested in creating a piece for their races, and I ended up making about 135 of these pieces and they were all different. I kept a handful of them, and we displayed a handful of them there.”

The third primary feature of “Trial by Fire” included pieces of glass resembling humans and other creatures.

“They have feet, they have necks and bodies, and they interact with each other.

I call them: Fantasia,” Goodman said.

Goodman’s breathtaking pieces earned him the 2011 Cincinnati Art Museum 4th Floor Award. The winner of this regional visual arts competition is selected by members of the Cincinnati Art Museum’s 4th Floor: Friends of Contemporary Art. In addition to his passion and success as a glassblower, Goodman is a musician and performer, which he pursues in his production called “Glass Experience.”

Although the show often contains only one or two performers, it can feature upwards of 20 people. Goodman, who plays a variety of instruments, incorporates his own soundtracks into the show.

“We will create sculpture in front of an audience and educate and try to inspire and enlighten people about the history and evolution of glass,” Goodman said.

The multitalented artist hopes viewers will take away the beauty from his diverse projects.

“They’re all different from each other.

They’re all unique and beautiful in their own way. Some of them are fat, some of them are tall, some of them are dark, and

Live, laugh, love

UC student lived life to the fullest, impacted hundreds GRACE ZBIEGIEN | STAFF REPORTER “Every day was something new and exciting. She loved it to the fullest,” said Leslie Galley, mother of Jessica Galley, remembering her daughter’s fervor for life.

If Ms. Galley decided to take part in something, she threw herself into it with 110 percent of her being. Her enthusiasm shined brightest with her involvement in the University of Cincinnati as a first-year student, and especially in the Gamma Phi Beta community. Many of her friends remarked she seemed destined to be a Gamma Phi. Many who knew Ms. Galley knew her as spontaneous, funny and compassionate individual — someone they truly wanted to be around.

“She’s just ¬— she’s what everyone said — she was that bright light that you could talk to at any point in time, and just get a smile on your face,” said Tyler Galley, Ms. Galley’s older brother, reflecting on her sunshiny demeanor.

Ms. Galley’s Gamma Phi Beta sister, Katie Norman, remembered her as the funny girl everyone loved.

“Honestly, Jess was so weird, but the good kind of weird that you couldn’t help but love,” Norman said.

Norman chalked up Ms. Galley’s silliness and zest for life to the fact she lived how she wanted to live.

“She lived. One thing I’ve always admired about Jess was the fact that she never seemed to care what anyone else thought about her,” said Norman. “And that allowed her to live life to the fullest.”

Ms. Galley shined like a neon light, and people could not help but be attracted to her as a person.

Many of Ms. Galley’s close friends recounted the numerous times she texted them or sent them a Facebook message entirely out of the blue. Whether she did it to tell them how beautiful they were, or offer them encouragement for a rough day, she had a “sixth sense” — as Norman put it — for when her friends needed a little pick-me-up.

Her simple style of loving made a greater impact than any grand gesture, which was made evident from the stories

“I never realized until I started going through doodles how much the ‘live, laugh, love,’ meant to her,” said Ms. Galley’s father. “And she lived her life the way she said it. I didn’t notice it so much until after she’s gone, because I got to see it in all these people and all their stories.”

Ms. Galley’s life, though short, left an impacting legacy on hundreds of lives.

From her family and friends, to her sisters in Gamma Phi Beta, to the people she met at UC, she remains in many hearts.

Ms. Galley’s life is an example of how to live every second like it might be your last. Be spontaneous, smile and above all: love.

‘Adventurous’ times with tattoo gun

After deciding not to return to art school, Dave Halsey, 24, completed a two-year tattoo apprenticeship. Now, with three years of experience under his sleeve, he tattoos at Barber’s Electric Tattooing, but still appreciates the basics he learned at art school.

Q: When did you decide to learn to tattoo?

A: I decided to learn how to tattoo after I ended up getting pretty covered in them. I had dropped out of art school and was working at Dewey’s … and I just really didn’t want to toss pizzas for the rest of my life, you know? I’ve always been intrigued by the mystique and aura of a seedy tattoo shop and the lifestyle of tattooers. There was always something dangerous and adventurous about it.

Q: When were you able to tattoo on your own?

How does the person you’re apprenticing under decide that you’re ready?

A: You kind of decide for yourself when you’re ready to be done. You have to balance keeping the shop clean, making tattoos and art, as well as pleasing the tattooers at the shop by giving them an extra hand without having to be asked to do it. Drive, discipline and initiative have a lot to do with it.

Q: What was your first experience tattooing like?

A: My first experience tattooing was pretty hectic. It was on one of my good friends and mentors so I knew I had to do a good job. My hands were shaking and my palms were sweating — and so was everything else. It was just all around a scary experience. I didn’t end up doing a very good job but it got the ball rolling for me.

Q: When did you decide you wanted to tattoo for a living?

A: It was never really a question for me. Since I graduated my apprenticeship, my goal has always been to tattoo until I physically can’t anymore. I love this industry and it’s only second to my family.

I could never let this gift go.

Q: What’s the biggest obstacle you’ve overcome as a tattooer?

A: I think just finding my niche. I’ve worked at quite a few shops in comparison to how long I’ve been tattooing, so I always thought maybe I just didn’t play well with others. Turns out I just had to get in where I fit in. The shop I’m at now is really cool. Barbers Electric Tattooing is the shop I wanted to work at since I started tattooing and now I’m here and I’m stoked about it. It’s everything I could’ve ever asked for.

Q: How is where you tattoo now different from the other shops?

A: I would say Barber’s is different because it’s a shop where everyone is working as a collective as opposed to operating as a single entity. No one is trying to cut your throat for business — everyone has their own clientele — and most of all, everyone is very skilled and specialized in what they do. Whenever I need help with a drawing, I can just ask, you know? I can honestly say I would let anyone I work with make a tattoo on me, which is saying a lot considering my ever-dwindling amount of space I have left.

Q: Tattoo artists seem to have more and more of a presence in

A: I don’t know. I guess people from outside the industry are trying to make money off it somehow, and succeeding at it. It’s a bummer, mostly because it gives the general public a very skewed view of what really goes on. They feel as if they’re let in on some of the “behind the scenes” aspect of what’s really going on, and they are being misled. I guess its just an overall misrepresentation of something people work so hard for and hold in very high regard.

Sometimes even making a mockery of it.

Q: What is the biggest misconception about tattoo artists or the work they do?

A: I would say that people just think we’re just drawing pictures all day and it’s all fun and games. In reality that’s not even half of what goes on. You always kind of have homework, you know? You never really get to stop doing this. When I’m at home, I’m drawing for appointments or even just trying to further my knowledge. Or I’m painting for the same reasons. It is the most fun I think I could personally have with an actual career … but it is extremely hard work. It’s worth it, you know? As with every other career that exists, you get back what you put into it. If you’re good to tattooing, tattooing will be good to you.

Movies you should never view with your parents

Keith BieryGolick | Managing Editor My parents love movies, I love movies.

But that doesn’t mean it’s always a good idea watch them with my parents.

Netflix provides plenty of family-friendly entertainment, but here are a few decidedly not family-friendly films you can stream instantly:

World’s Greatest Dad “World’s Greatest Dad” might be Robin Williams’ best film since “Jumanji,” but don’t be confused, it’s not a children’s film. Williams plays Lance Clayton, an English teacher who dreams of becoming a famous author. When Lance’s sex-obsessed 15-year-old son Kyle dies from an autoerotic asphyxiation (intentional restriction of oxygen during masturbation) accident, he stages the death as an intentional suicide to save his son from embarrassment. No one at high school cared much for Kyle, until a copy of his suicide note — written by his dad — surfaced in the school newspaper.

Something in the note struck a chord with students, and Lance decided to publish a journal supposedly written by his son, basking in the attention Kyle’s death provided him. Williams might be known for family films like “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “The Night at the Museum,” but he always shines brightest when the subject matter is at its darkest.

Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead Not only does “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead” open with a near pornographic sex scene, but it tells the story of two brothers who rob their parents’ jewelry store — not exactly ideal viewing material for a family get-together.

The great Phillip Seymour Hoffman (“Moneyball”) plays Andy Hanson, a financial executive about to get audited because he embezzled money from his employer to support his drug habit.

Ethan Hawke (“Training Day”) plays his younger brother Hank, who needs money to pay three months of child support. If

Team America: World Police It’s a safe bet any movie from the creators of “South Park” will contain offensive and obscene jokes, but after the success of “South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut” Matt Stone and Trey Parker took their off-thecharts level of raunchiness even farther off the charts in the puppet drama “Team America: World Police.” Broadway actor Gary Johnston is recruited by the counterterrorism group Team America to work undercover in a terrorist organization based in Egypt. Along the way Gary falls in love, and while there are countless

tasteless jokes in the movie (particularly when Kim Jong Il sings “I’m so Ronery” — instead of “I’m so Lonely”), Gary’s love scene blows them all out of the water. The puppets blast through numerous Kama Sutra positions in the nearly one minute scene. Any patience your parents had left will be gone when the puppets start urinating on each other R. Kelly-style.

Using puppets instead of humans might have gotten the film an R-rating instead of an NC-17, but unfortunately that won’t decrease the awkwardness of the film’s golden showers.

Enter the Void French director Gasper Noe famously pushes his audiences to the limit — and oftentimes beyond. His debut film “I Stand Alone” follows the life of a pathetic butcher who finds it increasingly difficult

to resist his incestuous desires toward his mentally handicapped daughter.

Noe’s next film, “Irreversible,” focuses on two men’s quest for revenge when a mutual lover of theirs is brutally raped.

Noe shoots the film’s eight minute rape scene in a single unbroken take, making it nearly impossible to watch. “Enter the Void,” Noe’s third film, follows Oscar, a young American drug dealer in Tokyo, who goes through an out-ofbody experience after he is shot by the police. Noe shoots the entire film from the disembodied American’s perspective as he floats around Tokyo after his death.

The decision to show the whole film from Oscar’s perspective is ambitious and interesting at first, but one can’t help but feel Noe has gone too far when Oscar travels inside a women’s body and witnesses her having sex from the vagina’s point-of-view.
