Students that are doubtful about the coming semester conversion scheduling at the University of Cincinnati can rest a little easier, as the school remains on course for the switch in August 2012. The UC semester conversion steering committee is now receiving revised policies from academic departments across campus, which will be reviewed by the committee. This is in accordance with the first phase of a three-part planning timeline for the conversion to semesters, which was outlined by the committee. “We have had a smooth process so far,” said M.B. Reilly, UC assistant director for public relations.

to plan

The bulk of the revisions to UC academics should be completed by the Fall quarter of 2010, when the second phase, cataloging the new curriculum, will begin. That phase is planned to be finished in September 2011. The third phase, consisting of student advising, will then begin and is the phase students should pay the most attention to, Reilly said. It is the most important phase to students, due to the effect that the transition could have on credit hours. Students still attending UC through the conversion will be strongly encouraged to meet with their respective advisers in regards to their academic plan, she said. “We will be pushing advising in 2011,” Reilly said.

Those with questions about the transition to semesters now have two more sources, in addition to the UC semester conversion site, where they can go for updates about the process — Twitter and Facebook. The Facebook page offers a variety of news concerning the semester conversion, from frequently asked questions, quizzes, videos and polls for students. Twitter, meanwhile, is offering briefs concerning the process along with other university-wide happenings. The new semester academic calendar for 2012 can be found on the site. Classes are tentatively slated to begin for the Fall semester Aug. 27, 2012. The calendar is still waiting for approval by the UC Board of Trustees.

Senates to host joint meeting gin a. ando the news record

The University of Cincinnati’s Faculty Senate, Graduate Student Governance Association and Undergraduate Student Senate will be hosting a joint meeting Tuesday, April 6, regarding many aspects of UC’s future. Among things to be discussed include a potential change in class sizes and enrollment capacity. The Proudly Pennies campaign, a campus-wide initiative started by the SG, which aims to raise $10 million, is also to be addressed the meeting. The Faculty Senate’s resolution, “Pathways for Success and Recognition,” calls for UC to allocate time and resources to create an environment “conducive to the excellence of both faculty and students.”

Despite Student Government’s rejection of the diversity outreach bill Wednesday, March 31, its resolution revolves around eliminating underrepresentation and promoting diversity. The event is slated to have an opening address by UC President Greg Williams, which will be followed by the three governing bodies’ votes on three separate joint resolutions that are aimed to affect many aspects of the university. Consolidation of UC’s reputation as a research institution and programs promoting student welfare appear on all three resolutions. Anyone desiring to watch the proceedings can attend the meeting, which is scheduled to take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Tangeman University Center’s MainStreet Cinema.

The Hamilton County coroner’s office has officially attributed 45-year-old Kelly Brinson’s death to natural causes. Brinson was in the psychiatric treatment wing of University Hospital and later died after going into cardiac arrest following a confrontation with hospital staff and police officers. Although Brinson’s death was announced Saturday, Jan. 23, his cause of death was not determined until late March due to coroner-run testings like toxicology. Brinson, who admitted himself to the hospital for mental health reasons, was being led to an examination room and allegedly grew agitated and attempted to assault one of his escorts. Although hospital security workers and staff were present, the University of Cincinnati Police Division was called in to help subdue Brinson, who had reportedly used his arm — which was covered in a cast caused by an unrelated incident — to injure those around him. In the staff’s attempt to bring Brinson under control, UCPD Officer Mark Zacharias deployed his stun gun. Hospital security and staff then brought Brinson into the examination room where he was reported to be cognizant and speaking with people around him. Despite the final ruling, a death by “natural causes” might be attributed to preexisting conditions such as diseases and is a term also used if a cause of death cannot be clearly defined.
