Based on the wildly popular, supernatural young-adult novels that don’t have sparkly vampires, “Beautiful Creatures” is romantic with a touch of magic.

The movie takes the star-crossed lovers style of popular romance and injects lifealtering moral dilemmas and humor.

In a conference call with some of the cast members from the film, the ensemble said they hope “Beautiful Creatures” will capitalize on the current popularity of fantasy romance novels like the “Twilight” series without copying the style.

“It’s the same demographic and the same audience base and the same genre, but I don’t know how similar [“Beautiful Creatures” and “Twilight”] actually are,” said Alden Ehrenreich, who portrays the main character Ethan in the film.“To me, this film has its own, distinct identity and voice and signature and such an incredible cast.”

Alice Englert, who plays the love interest, said she believes thinking of the two films together is normal.

“I understand why the comparisons are being made and it’s very natural — it’s such a new genre to have such a large audience,” Englert said. “And thus, it’s very interesting to see what it is about fantasy that seems to appeal so largely.”

Emily Rossum, who portrays the character Ridley Duchannes, said “Creatures” is different than other films in the genre because of how it depicts gender roles.

“One of the things I loved about this story that was different from all the youngadult novels and properties that were out there is that we’re showing the females with the power,” Rossum said. “I think that it’s important to empower young women, especially during an adolescent time.”

The first book, published in 2009, also attacks teenage angst and frustration — another quality the movie emulates.

“It’s a heightened reality of high school life,” said Thomas Mann, who plays Link.

“Because when you’re in high school everything feels like the end of the world.”

But Englert and Ehrereich said that the drama of high school isn’t the only thing the film captures.

“When I was in high school certainly I had this kind of restlessness and desire for

something more out of life than what you were given,” Ehrenreich said. “And that’s really what Ethan’s struggle [is]. He lives in this small-minded town where everything is the same and he’s just looking for something larger than that life to rupture that monotony.”

Englert said she connected with her character Lena, who happens to be a witch, and the struggles she faced throughout her life.

“I really connected with her in the sense that I understood having to go to a lot of different schools and having to introduce yourself constantly,” Englert said. “And having almost that performance of being strong and feeling alone and almost feeling attached to that, and at the same time wanting someone to reach out and be a human being to you.”

Although the audience of young adults who gobbled up the novels can be critical of how its favorite books and characters are treated by Hollywood, the cast said they think fans will be pleased with the result.

“Of course, there’s fans who have their own ideas,” Ehrenreich said. “It’s a personal experience to read a book, but for me for the purposes of the story, I thought the characters were wonderfully adapted and wonderfully played by all actors of the film.”

Zoey Deutch, who plays Emily Asher, said the desire to associate the book with the movie makes sense, but there is a danger in that thinking.

“I believe it’s important to understand that the book and the movie are separate entities,” Deutch said. “But I think the fans are going to be very happy because it truly stays on the original story and the characters … the authors of the series are very happy with the movie.”

The movie and book might differ in key areas, but their central idea remains the same.

“We’ve always used dramatized versions of reality to show these core, moral stories,” Rossum said. “Even though they’re popular now, they’ve been popular for a long time.”

If the movie gains enough popularity there is a good chance fans can look forward to sequels, which might perpetuate the trend of young-adult books turned into movies and make the supernatural-romantic genre immortal.

Biblical sermons provide backdrop

Ohio author uses his experience as a pastor to write advice book

EMILY BEGLEY | SENIOR REPORTER An Ohio author and ordained pastor uses humor to make biblical lessons more poignant and approachable in his book, “Bible Ditty Days: The Humorous ‘HowTo’ Book to Everyday Joy and Peace.”

Released in January 2013, the book includes a wide array of advice, which author Paul Wesler believes makes it accessible to just about everyone.

As a pastor, Wesler struggled to communicate with his congregation how to respond to temptation.

Even though he never considered himself an author and only wrote a few poems for birthday parties, Wesler thought the best way to deliver his message would be to put his words on paper.

“Peace and joy does not just happen in our daily walk,”Wesler said in “

Bible Ditty Days .”

“They are not emotions that God gives us one day and then leaves us hanging on the next … Peace and joy is not a happening but a choice — yours!”

The topics he covers include confidence, purpose and happiness, as well as issues such as negativity and hardships.

Wesler offers readers personal anecdotes in addition to quotes and references from the Bible to help them understand his broad ideas.

“The small decisions will either bring great blessings or great consequences,” he said. “If we give an encouraging word to people when we see them, then that’s going to come back and be an encouragement to us also.”

Including personal memories allows readers to relate to the ditties, but Wesler’s most powerful writing technique is his humor.

“Humor breaks the walls down. In fact, I preach this way also,” he said. “I try to keep things simple on difficult topics.”

In addition to lightening heavy topics, Wesler’s comical perspective are engaging and are significant aspects of each ditty.

“When I talk simply, [readers] can understand a lot better difficult topics from the Bible and in their lives.”

The primary message Wesler hopes readers take away from his books is the importance of small decisions and their consequences.

“Too many people live in a roller coaster life where one day they’re looped up and the next day they’re looped down,” Wesler said. “So the main message that I want people to understand is they need to get off that roller coaster we’re on mostly because of the decisions that we make.”

Slicing through the clouds two miles above the ground might give even the most adventurous daredevil acrophobia. But Nathaniel “Shaggy” Isaacson, 22, free falls with students seven days a week at Skydive Greene County in Xenia, Ohio to give them a firsthand experience of the rush of skydiving. With more than 900 jumps under his belt just last year, Isaacson plans to make his current job as a skydiving instructor a lifelong hobby.

Q: Tell me about being a 22-year-old skydiving instructor.

A: I have been skydiving for just over four-and-half years and been working in skydiving for almost six. Most 22 year olds are just getting out of college and looking for a job. My job started out slow and I made it into a career through hard work. It’s paid off.

I work for eight or nine months and get the rest of the months off to travel and meet new people. It’s nice to have a three-or-four-month vacation doing the same thing you love to do.

I think being 22 and a skydiving instructor gives you the freedom to go anywhere you want and do the things you want. Once you start somewhere, you can pretty much go anywhere in the country — anywhere in the world — especially with the more ratings you have.

I’m a tandem instructor and I went down to Florida and I was just hanging out and worked for a couple jumps here and there to pay

for fun jumps and hanging out.

There are a lot of drop zones. They’ve got drop zones in Spain and Italy, New Zealand and Australia. They let you jump down in Puerto Rico and Mexico. It’d be nice to bounce around and see the world and places to jump.

Q: As an instructor, what do you do?

A: Well, I am sort of a weekday manager. I process the students as they come in and make sure all the paperwork is in order for them to jump. I take their money and assign them to the tandem master. I make sure everything runs smoothly.

My main job is a tandem master — I jump with people on the front of me. I’m also a static line instructor. With this, I can train people that want to learn how to skydive [on their own or professionally]. I also have professional rating, so I can jump into demos like football games or even stadiums for special events.

I’m a parachute packer and a rigger, too. It’s a FAA, Federal Aviation Administration] certification that allows me to back the reserve parachute — the backup. I pack the parachutes up after they are jumped; I have about 9,000 pack jobs. I also repair parachutes or containers if they are damaged, and yes, my reserve parachutes have been used and always work great.

I’m an airplane mechanic. I have an A&P — another FAA certificate.

week when we are not jumping to keep them in a good running condition and always ready to be flown. I’m working on getting my private pilot’s license. I have about 30 hours of flying. I should be able to get it sometime next spring or during the summer.

I can pretty much do anything around here or at a drop zone or anything in aviation — being a mechanic, a pilot and having good skydiving rankings. No matter where I go I can always find some job or work somewhere. I could see myself running a drop zone like Jim one day.

but I was lucky enough for my shoe to land back on the drop zone on the end of the runway. I was happy to get it back. About three weeks later, I jumped out of the plane and hit my foot on the door, which knocked [my shoe] off. I was not lucky that time. I didn’t find that one.

I almost lost my camera helmet. It’s what I use to video people in free fall. When my parachute opened up, it hit my helmet and knocked it loose. It started to fall off my head, but I was able to catch it behind my back … it was a funny video.

Q: How did you get started?

Q: What are some of your more memorable jumps?

Most students enjoy it the whole way down.

The drive of learning and trying to get better is what makes me want to go to work every day. Even though I’ve been skydiving for five years, I still am learning new things. There are so many different things you can do; it takes years to even master one skill.

The more I jump the more I learn. With this job I get to learn a little quicker since I get the opportunity to jump so much — we trade off on things. I don’t get paid to work on the airplanes, but I get to jump out of them for free, which is why I have around 3,000 to 2,961 [jumps] if you want the exact number.

It’s more than a job. Since I’ve been working out here I have become part of a family.

Q: Have you ever lost anything in the sky?

A: I have lost a couple of things while skydiving. I, too, have lost a shoe the same way Ronnie, [the owner’s granddaughter,] did,

Q: Did you think growing up that this would be something you’d be doing?

A: No, not the way it’s turned out. Once I started getting into it, I started having more fun. I was able to make some more money and was like, it’s not too bad. I’ll keep skydiving for a couple more years, then see if I can get a different job working on airplanes somewhere and still skydive as a hobby.

As long as I’m still able to jump I probably will. I wonder when I’m going to slow down, because every year I seem to do more jumps than I did the year before. The first year I did like 100, the second year close to 600, last year I did about 800 and this year I’m almost at about 900 jumps. This year the way the weather was, was so perfect — all the hot summer days — not so good for the farmers, but a great year for skydiving.

Bad Books raid Thompson House

JAKE GRIECO | SENIOR REPORTER Bad Books is the collaboration of Andy Hull (Manchester Orchestra) and Kevin Devine. It is essentially a band of friends who perform like they are playing in their parent’s garage, just a lot better than most garage bands.

Hull and Devine filled the Thompson House with back and forth jokes Friday.

The intimate setting of the venue allowed the audience to feel like part of the gang.

Hull and Devine made numerous jests at the intoxicated antics that came from the crowd.

Devine even performed an on-thespot cover of “Black Horse and a Cherry Tree” based around the percussion of an enthusiastic fan’s balcony poundings.

But Bad Books delivered more than just jokes.

The band immersed itself into each song on the first night of its North American tour. Each time a song came to an end the crowd erupted into applause and then quickly turned to a stunned silence.

The band is called Bad Books, but Hull originally wanted to call the band Good Stories. Hull is focused on storytelling, and his love for stories can be heard on one of the band’s most notable tracks, “Pyotr.”

The audience screamed requests for “Pytor” all night, but they didn’t get it until the encore.

Over the screams, Hull asked the audience if they knew the story of the song. The audience responded with an enthusiastic yes, but Hull described it anyway — he said he didn’t want anyone to feel left out.

“This song is about this dude who took a bunch of cocaine,” Hull laughed, and then continued into the actual story.

“Pytor” is about a Russian tsar, he explained, who found out his wife cheated on him — so he beheaded her lover and made her spend time with it in a museum.

“Pytor” is actually a really beautiful love song. Hull’s performance moved the audience so much that even the obnoxiously drunk guests were quiet.

The band took full advantage of the intimate setting and played almost all of its two albums. Hull’s softer vocals were sharp and beautiful, and his screams were raw and emotional.

Bad Books thrives off of Hull and Devine’s harmonies. When the two came together in perfect union on the final encore, “You’re a Mirror I Cannot Avoid,” Hull put his guitar down and placed his thumbs in his belt loops as he elegantly accented Devine’s vocals.

Bad Books truly is a band that loves what it does and loves the fans that support its work.

The performance entranced while the band displayed a humble attitude with its self-deprecating humor. No fan left the venue unsatisfied.
