My freshman year was not what I had hoped. I chose a school that was surrounded by corn fields and nothing else. I was compelled to leave for the sake of mental health. Coming to UC the second semester of freshman year was a breath of fresh air. I changed my major from Neuroscience to Journalism and threw myself head first into a vastly different future.

One of my first classes was in Old Chem’s huge lecture hall. I knocked my water bottle over and had to jump over desks in front of hundreds of students to run after it as it poured tea all over the place.

I commute from Springdale to Clifton for class so rush hour traffic gives me nightmares. On a particularly rainy day freshman year I got into a car accident ... with a semi truck. I survived without a scratch, but my poor PT Cruiser did not. Drive safe kids, commuting sucks.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY OR WORST HORROR STORY FROM FRESHMAN YEAR? The summer of my freshman year, I went on a study abroad trip to Great Britain and France. It was my first time traveling internationally. When we got to Paris, my friends and I visited the Louvre, which had been a dream of mine for as long as I could remember. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

My favorite memory from freshman year is going to all of the home men’s soccer games. Getting to watch my older brother play and see my mom and little brother at the games was refreshing and made UC feel even more like home to me.

I spent my first semester of freshman year at a different college and swiftly fell into a mild depression until I transferred to UC for the second semester. It’s easy to make memories in Cincinnati by just spending time in Clifton cafés or by going to concerts and galleries in OTR.

Late nights and early mornings. I swam for the university’s swim team and spent most of my freshman year in a sleepless daze. The best part of my days included an early morning nap after practice on the sixth floor of Steger. The only thing I regret is not taking up a coffee addiction much sooner in my life.

Record-setting graduate class celebrates year of success CASSIE MERINO CHIEF REPORTER

The caps of 6,200 University of Cincinnati graduates showcased students’ creativity with customized designs, Greek letters and messages of gratitude to their parents watching from the audience during the 195th commencement ceremony Saturday.

With the largest number of graduates in UC history, the record-breaking commencement celebrated a class of students from 77 countries and 47 states.

“I want to remind you that your college education has not just transmitted to you new knowledge or a new degree,” said UC President Santa Ono. “We hope it has ignited in you new ways of thinking, new traits, new qualities and new values; not only of the mind, but also of the heart.”

Ono also spoke of the “grit,” — the motivation and determination to succeed—that UC students possess.

Tebelelo Seretse, ambassador of Botswana to the United States, gave the commencement address. Seretse graduated from UC in 1980 with a master’s degree in economics.

“There are people who simply live and there are people who choose to make a difference,” Seretse said.

“Today’s question is which category do you choose to live in?”

For some students, graduation was a long-awaited reward for years of dedication and hard work at UC. Sean Bressman, a graduate of UC’s College Conservatory of Music, studied for nine years at UC, while struggling with depression and a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Bressman was on the Dean’s list his first year at UC, but soon his depression forced him to take time off of school. In Spring 2013, Bressman returned to finish his degree.

“Mental illness is insidious in that it convinces you that it is your fault rather than see it for what it is: an illness,” Bressman said. “I know to be thankful for help from my family, community, and faculty. I have the strength to keep going and not give up.”

Makeda Mathews, a graduate of Carl H. Lindner College of Business, founded the Black Business Student Association. Mathews did it all: co-op, study abroad and working as a resident assistant.

“This university has provided me with the experiences to do more than achieve academic success,” Mathews said. “I saw the tools UC offered me to change this campus. I took them and now that I’m on my way out, I have the tools, skills and knowledge to change the world.”

As graduates shook hands with university officials to receive their prized diplomas some paused to take selfies with Ono. Others waved to friends and family members, but all walked proudly across the stage, marking the end of their undergraduate careers.

“No matter what discipline you graduate in you have been empowered to contribute to the world,” Seretse said. “As you receive your diploma, distinguish between what the degree will do for you and what you will do with the degree.”

WHAT ARE YOUR FRESHMAN YEAR MEMORIES? BEER One of my favorite memories was just moving in. It was the whole experience of living on your own for the first time.

When I first moved in, I really didn’t know what to expect.

Another memory was going to my first football game. Coming here and being a part of the student section, I’ve never seen school spirit in that way before.

That was mind-blowing.

SHAH One of the coolest things I remember from freshman year was that I tried to meet as many new people as possible in the beginning and I think that kind of showed. It definitely had returns later throughout freshman year.

WHAT LESSONS DID YOU LEARN AS FRESHMEN? SHAH I’m actually working on it now, but remembering people’s names. That can be a struggle, for me at least. I came in with the mentality that I’m going to meet as many people as I can and it’s going to be awesome, but the next time I’d meet them, I’d be like ‘Hey, how’s it going,’ and I wouldn’t remember their name.

Hopefully I’m not as bad now.

BEER Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.

There will come a time when something will not go your way. And knowing that is okay, but then also learning and growing from that experience is something that I wish was highlighted more when I was coming in as a freshman. When you’re a freshman, you are taking those first steps and knowing that not everything is going to be perfect.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST UTILIZED CAMPUS RESOURCE? SHAH Student Activities Leadership and Development. A lot of times when people

come on campus, they want to see what things are available, what things they can do. Student organizations, activities, event planning, if you’re interested in X, Y, Z, then you can go to SALD and they will help you figure out what you want to do. If you’re interested in taking on leadership roles, they have ample places for you to do that you just have to go up, shake their hand and ask. That’s something that a lot of people don’t really do.

Connecting with SALD and connecting with student organizations and Student Government is really beneficial.

BEER The upperclassmen. When I came on campus my freshman year, I swiped an upperclassman into CenterCourt and we sat down and talked for two and a half hours about what I wanted to do with my career, with my life, and with involvement at UC. While that’s scary at first, to sit down with an upperclassman, and have them say ‘These are the opportunities that are available, but what are you interested in?

What are you passionate about?’ is really valuable.

Just really utilizing the students. That’s where I got a lot of my drive and passion.

I’m still in communication with the person I sat down with.

It’s not a campus service, but a resource is the students. Connecting with the upperclassmen students is a great tool for freshmen.

WHAT ARE THE BEST WAYS TO COMMUNICATE WITH SG? BEER This is something that I personally want to work on, just being more open. If you see me on campus, stop me and say hi. I don’t bite and I really want to get to know as many people as possible. If you see me, stop me.

Another thing that’s ‘trending’ here at the university is social media.

Social media at this university is huge.

It’s almost becoming a job requirement nowadays. That’s definitely something that is easy communication where we can get back to you really quickly.

SHAH Another is to come in to the student government office, 655 Steger. It’s literally in the heart of campus. Tweet at us, email us.

BEER Another great place to start would be at the student activities fairs. We’ll both be present at those so that’s a great way to learn about student government, especially for first-years and our firstyear leadership program that we have.

Those are great resources to learn more.

ANY SAFETY TIPS FOR NEW STUDENTS? BEER Use NightRide! 556-RIDE. It’s super easy. Call and they come and pick you up. They’re operating over the summer now.

SHAH And the program has just been amped up multiple times. They’re very fast now.

Response time is very quick. They do also have drivers between 12 and 6 a.m.

The main purpose of NightRide is not to bag students who may have been drinking; it’s really to help students out.

So they shouldn’t be worried about any underage illegal activity. If they do not feel safe driving or walking, then they can call NightRide and not worry about that problem. Some students can be scared after drinking, but NightRide just wants to help out.

BEER And UCPD is here to protect and keep students safe. If you want to go up to them and ask them a question, don’t be

afraid to. If you are ever in a situation, UCPD and the Cincinnati police department are here to keep students safe.

Another piece of general advice is just not to walk by yourself, especially late at night. Campus itself is very safe and well lit, there’s the blue help phones as well, but off campus, don’t walk by yourself late at night. It’s not the best idea.

HOW CAN FRESHMEN BE SUCCESSFUL BEARCATS? SHAH If you come to UC and you realize that you don’t really like what you’re doing too much, there are always 50 other things that you could be doing with your time that you might like more.

Sometimes, it’s difficult to take that first initial step. Don’t be afraid to take that initiative. Ask your professor, ask your academic advisor and ask your major advisor. There are a lot of resources on campus to help.

BEER Don’t be afraid to try and make mistakes. College is the time where you learn who you are, you learn what you’re passionate about, and you learn where you want to make an impact here at UC and also in your life.

Don’t be afraid to try one of those obscure clubs, take a trip internationally, or go on a co-op in California or New York City.

Don’t be afraid to take on new opportunities because you never know that the smallest things might make all the difference and take you on a completely different journey.

Take advantage of all the resources that UC has. If it’s not already here, you have the resources to start it. Don’t be afraid to find out what you love to do and just go for it.

‘We’re on the move,’ Davenport reflects on year

Provost talks about student success; says UC moving in right direction KATIE COBURN NEWS EDITOR

From attending university award ceremonies to budget hearings and board of trustees meetings, the daily schedule of a University of Cincinnati Provost is a busy one.

Beverly Davenport began her tenure as UC’s senior vice president for academic affairs and provost in August 2013, taking on the task of overseeing the university’s 43,000 students, 2,500 faculty members and 14 academic colleges.

“It’s a hard job,” Davenport said. “It’s long hours, but it’s a lot of variety, and I cover a lot of areas. You get worn out, but you get some rest and do it again, and it’s fun. I love my job.”

Vice provosts and college deans meet with and report to Davenport on a regular basis, who then reports directly to UC President Santa Ono. Davenport is one of two senior vice presidents. Robert Ambach is the senior vice president for administration and finance and serves as the chief financial officer.

Prior to coming to UC, Davenport served as the vice provost for faculty affairs at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. Before being asked if she was interested in applying for the provost position at UC, Davenport said she did not know much about Cincinnati. When she visited campus during the interview process, she became interested.

“It resonated with me,” Davenport said.

“I felt immediately familiar. I think the people here are really welcoming and warm. I like this community.”

Davenport said she saw a lot of promise in UC, and she chose it for its persuasive president, impressive faculty and excited students.

As provost, Davenport said she is committed to building an environment for students to be successful.

“Student success will always be a goal,” Davenport said. “We want great students to come to us, and we want students to succeed.”

UC is dedicated to its retention of students to generate student success, Davenport said.

Davenport works to build academic support around a student by taking various factors into consideration: student safety, student mental health and student experience inside and outside of the classroom.

“The academic side of university life is about the majors, courses, study abroad, co-op, advising, fist year experience, honors programs and all the learning parts of your college experience,” Davenport said. “We do all these things to help you learn.”

First-year students enrolled in learning communities tend to have higher grade point averages than those not enrolled in a learning community, which generates student success and increases the university’s retention rate, Davenport said.

“You all have so many opportunities,” Davenport added. “You’re building the foundation for the rest of your life: friendships, networks, intellectual

foundation.”

Along with providing essential resources for student success, Davenport also works to provide research opportunities and professional development for faculty to succeed and become more effective in classrooms.

Davenport hopes to redesign the student experience to make it fit more with how students live their lives, which includes reconfiguring residence halls, providing better digital tools for students and creating spaces for students to complete group projects.

Online learning is another one of Davenport’s academic focuses. She said UC is looking into the processes of Blackboard, wifi services and the possible transformation of in-class lectures to online lectures to provide more class time to work on group projects.

“It’s an exciting time,” Davenport said.

“We’re on the move.”

Things are moving in the right direction and positive results are visible, Davenport said.

UC tripled the number of underrepresented minority faculty hired, which Davenport said is the result of a strategic hiring program she implemented.

The university is also headed in the direction of its goal to annually increase student diversity to mirror the state’s diversity, Davenport added.

UC has also increased its number of students participating in co-op programs and is committed to increasing funding and doubling the number of students who study abroad.

“This is a big university with a lot going on and a lot of students and challenges,” Davenport said. “I love the rhythm of the campus. I love the promise of doing better and looking forward and realizing the goals that we have. It makes me proud every day to be here.”

Students set trends on runway for DAAPworks Fashion Show Over 1,000 fashonistas from all over the world gather to celebrate senior capstone projects on catwalk ZACK HATFIELD ARTS EDITOR

Upon entering the 63rd Annual DAAPworks Fashion Show, held in the Campus Recreation Center, it’s easy to forget that everything is student-made.

From the fashion collections that took countless hours to make, to the 88-foot runway—the largest in the region—this is a uniquely University of Cincinnati event.

An enthusiastic 1,500 people filled the REC center on Friday, April 26. The audience ranged from elegant fashionistas and fashion industry leaders to students wanting to be blown away by cutting edge style.

The event, which showcased senior students in fashion design and fashion product development, is the culmination of years of intensive co-op, research, and sewing.

“This is their opportunity to show the result of five years of work toward their degree and present completely original and creative art in the process,” said Laurie Wilson, associate director of non-academic programming and adjunct instructor. Wilson has been serving as the show’s director and producer for 16 years.

Needless to say, the show that sells out every year

delivered. For one night, the Rec Center’s lower stage transformed into a place where masterful aesthetic and careful attention to detail and beauty were exhibited to endless applause.

The show was full of highlights; every student’s collection turned the catwalk into an arena of raw expression and talent.

The “Carnivara” collection by fashion design student Molly Wimmel consisted of a visceral femme-fatale look. The women models on the catwalk were clad in blood-red designs and monstrous masks.

Emily Oliver’s collection “Manifesto” was a reimagining of the futurism of the early 20th century that fused vintage with contemporary seamlessly.

Over 100 models displayed the creations of over 60 students as they witnessed their academic career turn professional.

Many important people come from all over the world to recruit designers and stay updated on contemporary trends.

“There are many industry professionals who attend the event just to keep abreast of who’s new,” Wilson said.

The work by students is art to wear, or Art wear, which is handmade clothing that is actually meant to be worn as opposed to the often outlandish fashion statements seen on runways.

For the first time in the show’s history, students in the College Conservatory of Music built the fashion

show’s set, which was definitely a benefit.

The atmosphere was edgy and explosive as strobe lights animated the room and a light touch from the fog machine added a surreal effect as attendees found their seats. The set was minimalistic but bold, a perfect contrast to the fantastical element of the pieces.

Another first for the show was the addition of the fashion product development program’s pariticipation.

Students who merged style with practicality showed off their inventions on the endless runway.

Highlights included Jennifer Wilke’s “Bulletproof Kid,” which aims to “protect kids not only emotionally but physically.”

Other standouts include Gretchen Wertz’s “FIDO + FITZ,” a line of dog products designed to protect canines (yes, there were dogs on the runway) and Melea Green’s “Unbroken” – a collection of customized prosthetic leg covers for amputees. Green’s collection received the most applause of any artist in the show.

The show also included a poignant salute to Phyllis Borcherding, the founder of the fashion product development program, who is retiring this year.

DAAP’s fashion show truly captured the imagination and hard work of the graduating students, who will most likely pursue careers in design and fashion.

“This is where the doors open wide for them,” Wilson said.

Student artwork culminates in broad retrospective DAAPworks 2014 showcases student work, expresses individual visions ZACK HATFIELD ARTS EDITOR

Spanning almost 12 departments and five floors, the annual end-of-the-year DAAPworks showcase displayed student capstone projects from every program in the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning.

The show, which was open from April 22-26, drew students from every facet of the university, providing a unique opportunity to witness the visions of graduating artists.

“DAAP students are highly regarded within their respective fields and are known to be innovators,” said Aaron Cowan, the curator of DAAPworks. “They spend a great deal of time and energy crafting work that solves problems and positively impacts lives.”

Although the fine arts pieces were confined to a small room on the third floor, their ambitiousness and innovation were unrestrained.

The projects ranged from all over the spectrum when it came to medium.

Students created paintings, ceramics, photography and electronic art.

One of the highlights included Frances Motzer’s “Hand-wrought”, the winner of the Director’s Choice Award for Fine Arts, an award that is chosen by the four DAAP directors. The installation piece contained knitting needles tangled in a bright red extension cord, which was hooked up to an old television that showed footage of the artist creating the piece itself.

David Saile, a former DAAP professor, is hypnotized by Lindsey Klump’s “Trance,” a piece in the Fine Arts room.

Anastasiya Yatsuk’s popular installation “Inventory of Space” re-conceptualized space and its role by placing baby chicks in a glass box. By placing the birds completely out of context in the urban setting, viewers were able to grasp new perspectives on the idea of space as they listened to the chirps fill the small gallery room.

The subtler pieces, powerful in different ways, didn’t go unnoticed. Lindsey Klump’s piece titled “Trance” was made up of 20 Polaroids taped onto the wall, each haunting photograph a lost “relic of the past.”

infrastructure in Cincinnati while DAAP’s library housed mesmerizing outfits that previewed the DAAPworks Fashion Show.

In recent years DAAPworks has been evolving with the possibilities of technology.

In the graphic design room 3-D projects and other complex ideas were exhibited.

“DAAPworks makes large and small changes every year as we continue to grow and explore new territory,” Cowan said. “The use of technology is one area that has provided many opportunities for students. The use of these tools allows them to fully realize very complicated and intricate projects.”

The M.F.A. and B.A. architecture exhibits featured expansive and in-depth diagrams as well as intricate models sprawled out across the floor.

If you walked by an empty classroom, you’d see the discarded material of these projects, half-chiseled mediums and abandoned parts that gave a glimpse of how time-consuming each project is.

“We must always keep in mind that our work in the studio does not have life or impact until it is out in the world,” Cowan said.

The event did that and more, creating an entire world of its own.

DAAP It’s easy to forget that some of Cincinnati’s best art is being made right here on UC’s campus. The College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning is one of the most prestigious design schools in the country. Each school year culminates with DAAPworks, an end-of-the-year thesis exhibit. CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM Cincinnati’s modern art museum – celebrating its 75th anniversary this year – rivals anything New York City can offer. The downtown museum exhibits the cutting edge of art, and is great to get lost in for a few hours, preferably on Mondays after 5 p.m. when admission is free. ($5.50 for students during regular hours)

NORTHSIDE TAVERN This gem provides a great low-key atmosphere and live music every day of the week. There’s also a great fire pit outside to sit around. Happy Hour is Monday through Saturday from 5-8 p.m. ($3.50$5.00)

IZEN’S DRUNKEN BENTO Clifton is full of hidden treasures like this one. The quaint sushi restaurant and bar is located at 212 W. McMillan St. and offers some of the most delicious, low-priced sushi around. The menu is half-off every day of the week, and it’s open until 3 a.m. ($2.50$8.50).

CCM The College Conservatory of Music’s 2014-15 season includes “Macbeth,” an opera version of “Hänsel and Gretel,” and “Legally Blonde—The Musical.” CCM is also part of a weeklong program this summer called Cincy in NYC, which has CCM performing with other essential Queen City artists in Manhattan. (Free for students)

WASHINGTON PARK From May 31 to Aug. 16, the park is hosting the Date Night Movies series in front of Music Hall on Saturday nights. This is a great way to relax and bask in the calming aura of the newly renovated park. All films are free and start at 9 p.m. (Free)

CINCINNATI PLAYHOUSE IN THE PARK Arguably Cincinnati’s most talented acting company, this Mt. Adams playhouse dazzles even those who usually don’t enjoy the theatre. College Conservatory of Music heads to New York City for 3-day jazz set CCM joins other cultural staples of Cincinnati in NYC festival celebrating Queen City MONROE TROMBLY STAFF REPORTER

College of Conservatory and Music students will soon travel to the Big Apple as part of CincyinNYC, a seven-day festival and showcase of Cincinnati’s top performing arts institutions.

CCM will travel to New York with the Cincinnati May Festival Chorus, Cincinnati Opera, Cincinnati Ballet, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Cincinnati Art Museum, Playhouse in the Park, the Taft Museum of Art, Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, the Taft House, Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber of Commerce and Oktoberfest Zinzinnati.

Led by Scott Belck, Director of Jazz Studies, CCM’s Jazz Ensemble will play three sets on May 6 at New

York City’s famed Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.

“To be able to take part in an arts initiative like CincyinNYC is a nice way for us to help CCM and UC connect with our alums in the New York area, and to help widen our audience,” Belck said. “We want to reward the students for their work, musicianship and professionalism over the course of the last year. What better way to celebrate that accomplishment than to go play at a famous venue?”

The shows will feature jazz studies alumni and special guests, including CCM professor Emeritus Rick VanMatre and legendary guitarist Fareed Haque.

One of the sets will include original music of Haque’s, written and arranged by CCM students, alumni and faculty to fit the mold of a large jazz ensemble.

The Jazz Ensemble will premiere the arrangements and also perform highlights from their mainstage season at CCM, which includes music from Thelonious Monk and Thad Jones.

“The compositions have been written in the last 10 years, but the actual arrangements that we’re doing are all brand new, and this is a great platform for exposing a wider audience to some really great music,” Belck said.

The Jazz Ensemble hopes the concerts will attract both prospective students to CCM and give alumni a glimpse of the opportunities CCM has strived to create.

“We want to share with them (UC alumni) that these are the opportunities that we actively pursue on behalf of our students,” Belck said.

Due to a sell out performance, the Jazz Ensemble will play three sets on May 6.

The previously announced 9:30 p.m. set is sold out, but tickets are still available for the 7:30 p.m. set and a newly added 11 p.m. set.

CCM’s internationally acclaimed quartet-in-residence, The Ariel Quartet, will also perform as part of CincyinNYC on May 12 at the 92nd Street Y.

The LGBTQ Center provides support and advocacy for students with the goal of creating an inclusive environment on campus for the LGBTQ community. The center promotes respect and equality through events, support groups and more.

The center itself is a safe space for students to discuss experiences, ask questions and learn about events and programming. A resource library is also available, primarily covering topics regarding gender and sexuality.

The LGBTQ Center is entering its fourth year of operation at the university. It has grown to include a director, program coordinator, graduate assistant, student workers and volunteers. The center also places an emphasis on Safe Zone training, which educates students about the positive role of social justice allies.

The Women’s Center is dedicated to promoting gender equality across the university. Through advocacy, education and research, the center inspires activism and leadership, aiming to eliminate gender barriers across and beyond UC. This is accomplished in part by events held throughout the academic year, such as the annual Vagina Monologues performance.

The center is also one of the oldest university women’s centers in the country, according to the center.

Study abroad trips breathe life into academic studies Worldwide opportunities extend education beyond classroom setting AMONA REFAEI STAFF REPORTER

Harlaxton Manor, a historical castle outside of Grantham, England, belongs on the set of a “Harry Potter” movie. Its towering rooms, sprawling façade and colorful gardens make the building seem straight out of a work of fiction.

But the manor is very much real, serving as a college and temporary home for students around the world.

Pipes that snake along the building’s hallways bear the names of past and present Harlaxton visitors, documenting trips that date back several years.

A group of 28 University of Cincinnati students will add their names to the pipes this summer, embarking on UC Blue Ash’s ongoing British study abroad program.

This summer’s program is led by UCBA English Department Head Sue Sipple, and Eric Anderson, professor of electronic media communications.

Students will travel to Great Britain and France in addition to taking a literature or electronic media course while staying at Harlaxton.

Anderson’s interest in study abroad was sparked by his own study abroad experience as an undergraduate when he lived in London for a semester.

“Having grown up in the rural Amish town of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, I was initially unprepared to live in such a big international city,” Anderson said.

“However, surviving and thriving during my time in London helped me to overcome my insecurities and gave me a new academic focus.”

The experience is similar for Anderson’s students, many of who are traveling internationally for the first time.

Anderson and Sipple have planned a number of pre-trip activities to help their students prepare for the trip, especially those without much travel experience. Some of these activities include learning how to use the London Underground and Paris Metro.

“I want [the students] to learn about the history of British broadcasting and how to be better photographers,”

Students will embark on a study abroad trip to Harlaxton Manor in May, studying either literature or electronic media topics during their stay.

The group will call the manor home for two weeks before traveling to London, Manchester and Paris.

Anderson said. “But I also want them to have a life-changing experience outside of the classroom.”

UCBA’s professors have worked on creating unique study abroad programs for their students with courses that range from those based in electronic media to service learning projects.

For example, professor of sociology Leslie Elrod and French professor Jody Ballah worked together to create a service-learning program that traveled to the island of Guadeloupe last spring.

Students who participated in the study abroad trip were able to choose from a number of activities, including working with local fisherman, visiting medicinal gardens, light construction work and teaching local elementary

students about American culture.

Elrod believes that by completing service internationally, students will gain a better understanding of the difference in what poverty means in American culture versus other cultures around the world.

“It’s important because it really brings the course material to life,” Elrod said. “It allows the students to see, in an applied way, what the importance of the discipline is and what its impact is on the broader community.”

There is also an alternative study abroad trip offered through UCBA that travels to Quebec. While on this trip, the students will be immersed in the culture of Quebec and French Canada. The students take language classes in the

morning with international students and participate in field trips to museums, walking tours and cooking classes.

“Not only do I hope [the students’] French language skills will improve, but also their level of confidence in using French outside of a traditional classroom,” Ballah said. “I am also thrilled to share my native country of Canada with my students and hope they will gain an appreciation for the French culture there.”

The University of Cincinnati offers an extensive list of study abroad opportunities, which change every year depending on interest and availability.

Recent destinations have included China, Australia and Costa Rica, in addition to many others.

Freshman basketball player creates new expectations JAELYNNE JOHNSON CONTRIBUTOR

Troy Caupain of the University of Cincinnati men’s basketball team was returning from Wing Wednesday at Marketpointe with freshman guard Deshaun Morman when we met.

We walked into his two-bedroom apartment in University Park Apartments located on UC’s campus and met his roommate, freshman guard and Cincinnati native Kevin Johnson, who thinks highly of Caupain.

Sitting at the counter with his laptop, Johnson praised Caupain.

“Off the court, he is a great person with a great character. He is trustworthy and overall a smart and cool guy,” Johnson said.“On the court, he is a leader and a fun player to play with.”

Caupain and I walked to the back of the apartment and entered his bedroom where it was obvious that one of his interests is shoes. The latest pairs of Jordans, Nikes and Kevin Durants covered the floor.

Caupain is 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 200 pounds but has the demeanor of a gentle giant. He hails from Long Island, N.Y., but his family moved to Midlothian, Va., where he has lived since seventh grade.

The Cosby High School graduate has established himself as a valuable asset to the Bearcats with his successful freshman season. He played in 34 games, averaged 5.4 points per game, 2.3 rebounds per game and 2.2 assists per game, overall.

“Outstanding and rough, but I handled it well,” said Caupain, describing his freshman season at UC.“I learned a lot of lessons from the seniors last year, like how to handle criticism, which is something I will use for the seasons to come.”

According to Caupain, his favorite moment from this season was beating conference rivals, the Louisville Cardinals, on their home court.

He said he chose to play at UC for two reasons. First, while growing up in New York, he always wanted to play in Madison Square Garden, which he achieved at the Jimmy V Classic where the Bearcats beat Pittsburgh 44-43 on Dec. 17, 2013. Second, he was appreciative of how the coaching staff treated his mother, Renee Caupain, like a queen, something that was really important to him.

“She’s my motivation. She’s done a lot for me as a single mother, she never gave up on me and made sure that I had everything,” said Caupain.

Caupain is headed home to Richmond, Va., for a two week summer break and returns to Cincinnati May 12 with many goals and expectations for himself and the team heading into the 2014-2015 season.

“For myself, [next season] I plan to go to sleep earlier, put in more time outside of practice, own ball pressure, read pick-androlls and be a person that people look to for leadership,” Caupain said.“For the team, I want us to do whatever it takes to win, I also want to get to the Final Four of the NCAA Championship Conference.”

Caupain and the Bearcats are back in action Nov. 28 at the Emerald Coast Classic, hosted by UC at Fifth Third Arena.

Junior transfer student and quarterback Jarred Evans steps out on the field every week with the motivation to make his father proud, to prove that he can do everything his father wants him to do and to be everything he wants him to be.

“He put a lot of work into me to become the best. So my inspiration would be doing everything correct for him,” Evans said.

One of 10 children, 21-year-old Evans grew up in New York City, Queens to be exact.

“They [his siblings] are probably my backbone.

I do a lot of it for them and I’m trying to be a good example,” Evans said.

Evans transferred to the University of Cincinnati Jan. 6 from Santa Barbara City College in California, turning down several other universities to play for the Bearcats.

He picked UC because of how welcoming the coaching staff was, especially quarterbacks coach Darin Hinshaw, who Evans sees as a friend and backbone.

Evans’ father made the cross-country commute to about six games in the year and a half he attended school in California. He anticipates his father’s attendance at every home and away game this fall and hopes his mom will make it to some, too.

Evans lives by the motto “dream big.” He has always wanted to become a professional football player, and if he had to pick any team to play for it would be the Miami Dolphins.

“It comes down to who gives you the best opportunities, where you feel comfortable with, but if I had to choose I would probably pick the Miami Dolphins just because it’s beautiful down there,” Evans said.

Evans is excited to play at Paul Brown Stadium this coming season because of his aspirations of being in the NFL, but he wishes he had the opportunity to play at Nippert, UC’s stadium.

“To be able to play in an NFL stadium is probably the most exciting thing ever,” he added.

Evans studies communications with a minor in kinesiology and ended the spring with a 3.3 GPA. He is thankful for the help and support provided by the academics side of the athletics department.

“Everything is basically all checked for you. All the staff is basically helping you focus in the right way. It’s up to you as a person not to just take it and go with it.

If you just follow the directions, I think you’ll be fine,” Evans said.

What Evans enjoys most about UC is his team and how everyone is on the same page.

“All they want to do is win, and most of them have the aspiration to go to the NFL, and I feel that that is something we all connect with. All, every single body, we all want to win and we all have that dream to play football again,” Evans said.

Evans isn’t worried about senior QB Munchie Legaux, who is still recovering from a knee injury sustained during the second game of last season, when he tore two ligaments and damaged cartilage in his left knee.

He also doesn’t think about sophomore transfer Gunner Kiel, who transferred to UC in the spring of 2013 after redshirting his freshman year at the University of Notre Dame. Kiel was required to sit out his 2013 season due to NCAA transfer regulations but will have three years of eligibility left as of this fall.

“I don’t believe in the hype. I feel real confident just because I know I bring a different aspect to the game than the two players. Gunner Kiel’s more of a pocket passer and Munchie does the same thing, and I think they’re looking for something different,” Evans said.

Evans said he doesn’t utilize his speed until pressure is forced and that his “God-given” athletic abilities are used to run the ball and get out of the pocket.

Evans thinks he has a lot to prove. He believes that a lot of people doubt him and that he needs to become

better as a quarterback than he is now.

To ensure he performs his best, Evans does extra work on the field, including throwing around the football with a couple of teammates and working out every day. He also prays and says he thanks God for the opportunity to play football.

“I’m going to go out there and play football the way I play football, and I’m going to have to help my team any way possible,” Evans said. “I’m going to have to become a teammate, a team player, and not be selfish.”

UC’s new AD has big plans for athletics, facilities his goals of renovating two of UC’s athletic facilities and bettering the fan experience.

FIFTH THIRD ARENA Studies are underway to determine if moving University of Cincinnati basketball games to U.S. Bank Arena is a better choice than renovating UC’s Fifth Third Arena.

U.S. Bank Arena offers nearly 4,000 more seats than Fifth Third Arena, and although there are no concrete plans yet to renovate Fifth Third, there is a possibility of removing 3,000 seats, adding all-permanent seating instead of electronic bleachers and improving the upper-deck views.

Mike Bohn joined the University of Cincinnati athletics department in February as the new athletic director with an agenda.

Before becoming the 15th athletic director at UC, Bohn held the same position at the University of Colorado, San Diego State University and the University of Idaho. He succeeds Whit Babcock, who left UC to claim the same position at Virginia Tech.

The News Record sat down with Bohn to talk about

The goal of this estimated $50 million project is to add 10,000 seats for student-driven excitement and energy.

“Our sights are high for basketball, and we have big expectations of that and we recognize that as a part of that, we need to continue to make major investments into the facilities,” said Mike Bohn, UC athletic director.

Already on track is a $1.2 million renovation of the men and women’s locker rooms in Fifth Third Arena.

It’s about the fan experience for Bohn — everyone from the students to the season ticket holders — and that covers all of the amenities that are required to ensure the audience has a good time at UC basketball events.

“We just need to begin to recognize that the University of Cincinnati is a tremendous asset for this community and one that we can all take pride in,” Bohn said.

NIPPERT STADIUM Bohn loves the school spirit UC has and wants to continue to build off of that momentum and “fuel it.”

At the graduation commencement, the student section broke into the “Down the Drive” chant twice, he said.

That is the kind of energy he hopes to continue to harness going into the fall at Paul Brown Stadium.

“The challenge of playing football games in an NFL stadium while our stadium is under construction is a terrific opportunity, but also one that is going to

require a lot work—a lot of partnerships,” Bohn said.

He is confident that the energy of the UC student body will drive students to attend football games this season at Paul Brown Stadium while UC’s Nippert Stadium undergoes a 12-18 month, $86 million renovation.

Bohn puts his faith in the spirit squad — including the cheerleading team, newly named world champion dance team, marching band and Greek life — to keep students hyped and the student heartbeat strong.

Plans are still in the early stages for arranging transportation from UC’s main campus to Paul Brown Stadium.

The Nippert renovations and expansion project began in December as a privately funded project to build a new press box structure, premium seating and scholarship club seating.

Both the east and west sides of the stadium will be expanded, adding approximately 40,000 seats.

The new press box, added suites, scholarship club seats and patio suites will be on the west side of the stadium in addition to a renovation on the west concourse including new restrooms and concession stands.

The west side expansion will add a one and half stories to the height of the current press box for the four levels: a press box level, suite level, scholarship club level and patio suites level.

The east side will have new restrooms and an expanded concessions stand also, as well as a skywalk connecting the upper deck to O’Varsity Way. The construction of Nippert Stadium continues to run on time and on budget, expecting to be ready in August for the 2015 season.

“The game day experience is going to be dramatically improved,” Bohn said.

Bohn recognizes that the move to Paul Brown is going to take a significant amount of energy, time and money, but he does not want to leave UC’s other sports under the radar.

OTHER FOCUSES Soccer, volleyball, baseball, lacrosse and golf programs are sports that Bohn hopes to continue to see grow and develop, especially after predecessor Whit Babcock brought in a number of young coaching staff members.

“We want to make sure that everybody that has Cincinnati on the front of their jersey has the opportunity to be successful, and that their experience is one that they’re proud of,” Bohn said.

Bohn sees these opportunities as a team effort and he wants to work hard to inspire others to be a part of it all and allow the athletic department and university as a whole to continue to grow.

His main, over arching goal is to make this the hottest athletic department in America.
