Ono, Yip recount love story, reflect on marriage UC’s first family shares what love means to them; secrets to maintaining healthy relationship RYAN HOFFMAN NEWS EDITOR

This August marks 25 years since University of Cincinnati President Santa Ono and Wendy Yip tied the knot. Since that day, the first family’s relationship and how they define love has changed rapidly.

“Love really evolves over time and becomes much more meaningful over the years,” Ono said. “It’s much more than a physical attraction. It becomes a feeling where you can’t imagine life without that other person.”

Their relationship is one of compromises and a mutual respect; Yip is the yin to Ono’s yang.

“What works for us is that we can see both sides and even if we get upset … We do both want what’s good for each other,”Yip said. “You both realize you’re both working for the same end goal.”

The two met roughly 28 years ago at McGill University in Montreal. Yip was in her senior year when Ono came to the university to complete his Ph.D. work in 1985.

“To be honest,”Yip said. “The first time we sort of became aware of each other we were just in the same research group, and I just remember he was

The two were simple acquaintances until one day during Yip’s first year of graduate school when she heard Ono play the cello at a graduate-student function. Yip, who also was a musician, invited Ono over to her parents’ house to play with her and another musician. But the other musician backed leaving Yip and Ono. “Her parents came home and saw the trio had become a duo,” Ono said.

However, Yip said she wasn’t as sure about their relationship as Ono was. She never had a serious relationship and she wasn’t sure if he was the right one.

“What works for us is that we can see both sides and even if we get upset ... We both want what’s good for each other. You both realize you’re both working for the same end goal.”

“I think he interpreted it as a sign of interest and I was not in that place,”Yip said. “There were a cute couple of guys around the place and there were possibilities of maybe I might date them. And then he moved much faster and he asked me out after that.”

Once the two began dating, they quickly realized they had similar interests — music, theatre and food.

Still, Yip said Ono moved much faster than she did.

“About six weeks into dating we had gone out to a club … And he said to me basically ‘the way I feel about you right now I would marry you tomorrow,’’’Yip said. “That’s quite romantic. I said ‘Wow, I don’t think I could say that I’m not there yet.’ It took me a couple more months to get there.”

She said Ono wasn’t raised Christian, which added to her hesitation.

“I almost didn’t date him at first because he didn’t grow up Christian,”Yip said. “But we had a big discussion about it and he did start coming [to my church] and what I found out afterwards is that he had explored faith as an undergraduate. That encouraged me because for me it felt like ‘OK, we would be on the same page of wanting the same things and being respectful.’”

Ono remembers one date in particular, when he took Yip to a “fancy French restaurant” — the first time he had eaten at such a restaurant, Ono said. He waited 45 minutes for Yip and was about to leave when he saw her running from a bus to the restaurant.

“I was depressed and I was about to leave and she came running from the bus and we sat down and I had no idea what to do at a fancy restaurant,” Ono said. “I’ll never forget that.”

PROVIDED UC President Santa Ono and Wendy Yip are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary this August. The two say their ability to find compromises is one of the secrets to their relationship.

The two dated for nearly two-and-a-half years before getting married — an event both remember with blissful clarity.

In fact, when the two are asked what memories stand out to them from the past 25 years, they both recount the same events — first house, first move, the birth of both of their daughters.

Ono said there’s a mutual respect that allows the two to maintain a healthy and occasionally exciting relationship.

“She’s an incredibly bright person, and she is someone that thinks deeply and broadly about different questions,” Ono said. “I respect the fact that she’s honest with me and she sometimes challenges me and questions me. That kind of a relationship is a deep one and I think that’s big part of the secret of staying together.”

Currently, the couple spends most of their time racing from university functions to soccer practices, recitals or any of the other numerous activities their daughters are involved in.

For Ono and Yip, it’s all about balance.

“Our relationship is based on trying to find that middle road between what he wants, what I want and what works for the family,”Yip said. “It’s just trying to find harmony.”

Campus brings long-distance couple together at last

First-year journalism student Fernanda Crescente and third-year communications and Spanish student Eric Horner met by chance on Chatroulette.

After meeting online, students maintain relationship on separate continents before attending UC EMILY BEGLEY COLLEGE LIFE EDITOR

Eric Horner rarely averts his eyes from the sunny first-year journalism student at his side, a slight smile playing on his lips as he details the unusual story of how he and Fernanda Crescente were brought together. His gaze indicates an elated awe that such an act of destiny is possible — a simple action that, until recently, was physically impossible.

Their relationship blossomed from a chance encounter on Chatroulette, an interactive website that brought Horner and Crescente together from a world apart: he in Cincinnati and she in Brazil.

“We had to learn about each other through a computer screen,” Crescente said. “And that’s really hard, but it made us so much more appreciative about the relationship we had.”

Horner said it forced them to find contentment with mere conversation.

“There doesn’t have to be anything distracting you. I feel like that’s so hard to find anymore,” he said.

Horner, a communications and Spanish student, frequently utilized the website as a means of expanding his proficiently in the language when he happened across Crescente, who used the site to practice her English. Foregoing the brief connection time typical of Chatroulette, the couple talked for more than four hours before exchanging contact information.

Although their first interactions resembled those of pen-pals, Horner said, the relationship soon transformed into something more significant. The pair increasingly looked forward to coming home and speaking with each other over Skype, which occurred at odd hours of the night due to the three-hour time difference between them.

“It started off as something really casual, and then we got more and more into it,” Crescente said. “It was really weird at first because we started noticing that we were liking each other, but it was really complicated because we were long distance. We’re

not talking different cities, we’re talking different countries.”

For seven months, the couple’s interactions occurred solely online and over the phone until an opportunity came to meet face to face. The two met up in New York, where Crescente flew to stay with a friend and Horner drove to see her. The couple spent a week together exploring the city and, after overcoming an hour or two of initial awkwardness, realizing how natural the relationship felt.

“We spent almost an entire day just laying there and looking at each other, realizing that I could actually touch her now,” Horner said. “I’d been waiting seven and a half months just to do that.”

Parting ways again was one of the hardest moments of their relationship — an experience Horner likened to the pair being forced to separate in Disney’s “The Fox and the Hound.”The two continued to pursue their long-distance relationship, Crescente said, overcoming the typical connotation that doing so rarely works out.

“It definitely takes a kind of person to go into a long-distance relationship, but I just think it’s awful that people say that, because it’s definitely possible.

It’s definitely doable,” Crescente said. “If you want something to happen, it will happen. If you really love that person, you will stay with that person and you will do everything in your power to make that relationship happen.”

Horner and Crescente maintained frequent communication, occasionally visited each other’s families and celebrated anniversaries over Skype, dressing up and cooking the same meals on different continents. Then, against all odds, a common factor brought the two together for good: the University of Cincinnati.

While teaching English and finishing her high school career in Brazil, Crescente discovered a scholarship available at UC for international students, an opportunity that would bring her together with Horner while allowing her to achieve her dream of living abroad.

“I was not only visiting him, I was visiting my college,” Crescente said.

Crescente constantly worked toward obtaining UC’s International Outreach Scholarship which, Horner pointed out, began targeting international students interested in journalism only one year before Crescente’s application.

“It was unbelievable how much it all met up,” Horner said. “That was the only thing that made this whole thing possible.”

As their two-year anniversary approaches, Crescente and Horner will for the first time celebrate the occasion together in the same country, in the same state, on the same campus.

“I definitely think we’re very lucky,” Crescente said.

“It’s crazy that you can meet a person online and then accomplish all of these things.”

Just Friends: Keystone Bar and Grill ($4-$15) This casual eatery offers a variety of menu items and specials that won’t break the bank. Their signature mac and cheese dishes are a perfect comfort food and most items don’t require sharing — since you’re just friends. Keystone’s new feel and open environment won’t make you feel too closed in and intimate. If you would like a change of scenery from Clifton for a night, Keystone also has locations in Hyde Park and Covington with most of the same dishes.

New Relationship: Dewey’s Pizza ($4.95-$21.45) Pizza is always a good choice, and with Dewey’s infamous crust and fresh ingredients, it is the perfect atmosphere for a first date or new relationship. Sans the candle-lit dinner, the dim lighting and private booths are perfect for a casual date. Share one of their seasonal pies like the Rocky Balboa — a Philly cheesesteak pizza — or a traditional red sauce and cheese. Dewey’s salads are also unique with interesting ingredients served with their house-made dressings. If you aren’t up for sharing this early in the relationship, a calzone is also a great choice, and large serving sizes offer up plenty of leftovers.

Established Relationship: La Poste Eatery ($3-$28) Located in the Gaslight District of Clifton, La Poste is a hidden gem of the neighborhood, serving American cuisine with many different influences.

This homey and romantic restaurant serves dishes with beautiful presentations and unique flavor combinations. Although La Poste may not be a place to visit regularly for a cash-strapped student, Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to splurge and impress your boyfriend or girlfriend.

This Mexican restaurant offers an upbeat and urban atmosphere that is perfect for getting together with the girls to share a variety of tacos with chips and salsa. The Eagle also offers a wide range of beers including ciders and many local brews on tap.

The album is a great responsibility because once it’s put on there’s no controlling your body.

That’s what makes this album so great for when that special time comes to show your lover how much they mean to you. It’s so effective in setting the mood that it should come with a warning label: “May cause babies.” As the album progresses into songs such as “Crystalised” and “VCR” listeners will find themselves moving to the rhythm from this sensual world The XX has created.

Marvin Gaye solidified himself as a genuine sex icon with the release of “Let’s Get It On” and since then has gone on to inspire a multitude of R&B artists.

Artists such as R. Kelly and Frank Ocean are all possible due to the ground breaking work of this highly arousing man.

The song is endlessly repeatable and undoubtedly future lovers will feel the fever when those first three notes are hit. The hit single has been used throughout mediums of entertainment.
