From the racing and gaming excitement at Canterbury Park to outrageous re-creations of the 16th century at the Renaissance Festival and the amusements at Valleyfair, Shakopee is an entertainment mecca for people of all ages and interests. RiverSouth, a public-private collaboration, has formed to help promote all the opportunities that exist in the area.

Whatever your hobby or recreational interest, Shakopee offers something fun for everyone. The Community Center is undergoing a major renovation project to ensure residents will enjoy its amenities for years to come. The Community Center has an indoor walking track, fitness equipment, Senior Center and Teen Center, but when the project is complete in 2017 it will also have two ice rinks, an aquatic facility, expanded fitness areas and an indoor playground.

Shakopee is home to the Scott County Historical Society in which the Maurice Stans collection and the county’s historical society collection are housed. It also has a large public library conveniently located in the downtown area.

The community offers both private and public schools, which work together to provide a good foundation for children.

The city also has an extensive park system and the adjacent Minnesota Valley Wildlife Trail is a nature-lover’s treasure.

RIVERSOUTH UNITES SHAKOPEE STAPLES

S

hakopee has long been known as an oasis for family fun, gaming and entertainment, but it’s never had its own brand.

Bill Von Bank is hoping to change that. Von Bank is the executive director of RiverSouth, a partnership between private attractions and public entities throughout Shakopee and Scott County that seeks to make the phrase “south of the river” synonymous with fun.

“We want RiverSouth to be that phrase used when someone says, ‘Let’s get away for the weekend, let’s go to RiverSouth,’” he said.

Launched in 2014, RiverSouth’s motto, “The Land of Big Fun” is an homage to the four major attractions that call the area home: Valleyfair, Canterbury Park, Mystic Lake Casino and Entertainment Center, and the Renaissance Festival.

“We have a 4+4=10 equation, meaning we have four major attractions, four miles apart that receive 10 million visitors each year,” Von Bank said. “Most communities would kill to have one of these attractions to call their own; we’re lucky to have four.”

The 16th annual Public Power Lineworker’s Rodeo is a gathering of public utility workers from across the United States and Canada, competing for bragging rights and a celebration of the craft was held at Canterbury Park in early April. Despite chilly temperatures, the rodeo offered unusual family fun in Shakopee.

RiverSouth scored a big victory in July, when the Renaissance Festival announced it would continue to joust and drink ale in Shakopee through 2019, ensuring it remains the “Land of Big Fun” for years to come.

TRAILS Shakopee has a networked system of more than 60 miles of recreation and transportation trails for walking and bicycling. DNR-owned Minnesota Valley State Trail runs along the river (the federal and state governments own various parts of the river frontage being preserved).

The state trail has a number of access points in Shakopee, including Huber Park, Memorial Park, The Landing and the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge. An access point to the Minnesota River Bluffs Regional trail is located just outside of town on Bluff Creek Drive off County Rd. 101.

Nearby Chaska, Rapids Lake and Louisville Swamp Units combine to provide 4,700 acres of outdoor opportunities such as hiking, bicycling, cross-country skiing, wildlife observation and photography as posted on Refuge interpretive signs. A trail access point with a parking lot is located at Stagecoach Road and County Road 101 in Shakopee.

The Enigma Teen Center is on site and offers games, events, DJs and bands. The space is available for event rentals.

Adjacent to the Community Center is the Shakopee Skate Park, which has more than 25 different pieces of equipment. Designed as a Tier 1 park, riding surfaces are no more than three feet high. Daily admission is free.

The Community Center is undergoing an expansion project to be completed in 2017. The expansion includes a Senior Center, more fitness equipment and two ice rinks.

hether you’re looking for a quick lunch, a casual place to sip a drink or a chance to try something new, Shakopee has the cuisine you need.

The downtown area is home to local restaurants and bars featuring foods from a wide range of cultures. It’s easy to find authentic Irish, Mexican, Honduran, Indian and Southeast Asian fare throughout the city.

Shakopee is also home to a number of authentic Hispanic grocers and markets, allowing residents of all backgrounds to pick up ingredients that may not be commonly carried at big box grocers.

The city has several major dining hubs, the latest of which has emerged in the Southbridge neighborhood. The last year has brought a Smashburger, Chipotle, Jimmy John’s, Five Guys and more into the neighborhood. Southbridge is the area with the most new residential spaces, said city Economic Development Coordinator Samantha DiMaggio.

hakopee has been the center of government in Scott County since 1853. The city plays host to the Scott County Government Center, and in 2016 construction began on a new city hall that will put all municipal services on one campus.

The Shakopee City Council approved construction of the $8.5 million city hall in April, and over the summer construction has been ongoing on the lot adjacent to the Shakopee Police Station and across from Shakopee Public Works on Gorman Street.

City Administrator Bill Reynolds said the new facility will allow the city to house all its 130 full-time personnel under one campus and streamline workflow with unique features such as an internal stairwell.

“It all goes to customer service,” Reynolds said.

His vision for the new city hall is one in which citizens can quickly and conveniently be directed to the proper department to avoid logjams commonly associated with bureaucracy.

The City Council approved the project on the basis that they would not have to raise taxes. Mayor Bill Mars said undertaking the project without an extra charge to citizens “speaks volumes” to how the city is run.

Shakopee is a “Plan A” city, meaning it operates on a weak mayor-council plan; this means that administrative and legislative authority comes from the council unless the council has created an independent board. The mayor and four council members are elected from citizens; each has one vote on the council and represent the entire city.

Shakopee is the county seat for Scott County and hosts the county’s administrative offices, courthouse and jail.

In the Minnesota Legislature, Shakopee sits in State Senate District 55 and State House of Representative District 55A. The city is part of Minnesota’s Second Congressional District, a seat being vacated at the end of 2016 by retiring Republican John Kline.

Founded in 1857, Shakopee has a long history, which is visible in our downtown. The historic downtown is currently undergoing a revitalization thanks to the Main Street Shakopee program. This program supports initiatives that increase

hakopee has taken great strides in the last decade to become a city that is more walkable and bikeable for its residents, with zoning priorities that attempt to link neighborhoods to parks and business hubs with sidewalks and trails.

With a network of walking and biking trails that expands for more than 60 miles and links to some 920 acres of park land within the city of Shakopee, there’s always an opportunity to get out and get your heart rate up with some cardio.

The city’s Parks and Recreation Department holds an annual Wheelies Bike Event in June at Huber Park that includes a police surplus bike auction, door prizes, free refreshments and snacks, kids’ trike and training-wheel races, bike registration, safety and educational handouts, and a helmet giveaway

Paul’s Bicycle Shop owner Paul Ruthenbeck said Shakopee is still not a hub for urban cycling, but changes to city planning have helped create a more robust biking community.

“I think the bike friendly part of downtown is getting a lot better,” he said.

Ruthenbeck said the best area for a road ride is the Minnesota River Valley State trail, which follows the water 14 miles into Bloomington.

This June, Mainstreet Shakopee and the Chamber and Visitors Bureau threw the city’s first “Open Streets” festival, which promotes locally sourced food and active lifestyles in the community. The event included a local artisans market, which allowed Shakopee farmers to sell their fares close to home.

BOILING OVER WITH POTENTIAL Scott County has always been a tourist haven

S

cott County is home to some of the most visited places in all of Minnesota: Valleyfair, Canterbury Park, Mystic Lake Casino Hotel, the Renaissance Festival, and more. However, long before these places were established, Scott County was already a tourist destination, thanks to the area’s natural beauty. The county’s earliest tourist attractions were health spas and resorts, which drew visitors from all over.

In Jordan, guests came for the mud; specifically, to partake in a restorative mineral mud bath at Mudbaden Sulphur Springs.

Mudbaden began in 1906 when founder Ole Rosendahl accidentally discovered sulphur mud on his property. Soon he was “cooking” the mud in order to treat patients.

His experiments proved successful and he opened a spa, “Rosendahl Sulphur Springs” (later known as “Mudbaden Sulphur Springs”).

The spa grew; in 1912, up to 14 trains stopped daily at Mudbaden Station depot. By 1914, the spa could accommodate 200 patients.

However, advances in modern medicine led to a patient decline in the 1940s and sulphur mud baths came to an end in 1952.

Visitors also came to Scott County for the water — specifically, Prior Lake. For close to 100 years, between 1879 and the 1960s, resorts thrived on Prior Lake as commercial and recreation centers. They of fered amenities such as boats, housekeeping services, ice, local farm produce for purchase, and sandy beaches.

Some of the larger resorts offered extra benefits like tennis, golf, dances, and horseback riding.

The resort season began in midMay and ran until early fall. The resorts remained popular tourist destinations until after World War II, when visitors began heading for northern Minnesota instead.

Boiling Springs – also drew visitors to Scott County for a number of years. Boiling Springs is a geological rarity and historic site within Eagle Creek, located in northwest Savage. The water in the spring appears to be boiling, though it is not actually hot.

Boiling Springs is an important cultural and spiritual site for the Dakota, and was the home of Eagle Head’s village in the 1830s. When the land around Boiling Springs opened for Euro-American settlement, it was purchased in 1855 by Gregor Hattenberger, who oper-

ated a farm and grist mill there.

Later, his descendants publicized the site as a tourist attraction, installing a park, benches, and picnic tables around it. For many years, visitors came to see this natural wonder in action. Though it is no longer a tourist destination, Boiling Springs is still active and continues to garner local interest.

To learn more about these and other Scott County tourist attractions, past and present, visit the Scott County Historical Society’s newest exhibit, “Wish You Were Here: Tourism in Scott County.” The exhibit opened in September 2016 and runs through August 2018. This exhibit features incredible photos and artifacts, along with hands-on activities and Instagram hot spots.

PARKS PERFECT FOR PLAYING AND PUTZING S

hakopee has about 920 acres of designated park and open space areas, but how active you want to be when you get there is up to you.

The city of Shakopee, Scott County, the Three Rivers Park District and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources all manage park spaces within city limits. Last summer, a new gaming trend helped give Shakopee parks a boost in attendance and had many families venturing out of their neighborhoods to see what the city has to offer.

Brenda Kostelac has lived in Shakopee for five years, but it wasn’t until her son downloaded Pokemon Go, a game that puts digital creatures in physical public settings, that they began going to all the city parks to catch as many digital critters as possible.

“They get to know Shakopee,” Kostelac said. “They might be looking at their phones, but they’re looking at them outside while they’re moving.”

Shakopee’s parks continue to play host to large public events, such as the Shakopee Diversity Alliance International Festival, which took over Huber Park in July. The festival celebrated the many backgrounds of Shakopee residents with traditional music and food from across the globe.

Lions Park also hosted a large community event this year, when Relay for Life was moved there due to construction at the high school. Lions Park is home to the city’s disc golf course and the SandVenture water park, complete with a 300-foot water slide.

The Shakopee Parks and Recreation Department has a variety of classes, clubs and activities to keep residents of all ages moving and interacting with their neighbors.

hakopee’s growth continued in 2016, as the Metropolitan Council estimates put the city south of the river at more than 40,000 residents. With a developing and diversifying population, Shakopee is rising to the challenge of making all feel welcome.

An excellent example is Julifest, a celebration at the end of July thrown each summer by St. Mark’s Parish.

The name “Julifest” comes from the German word for July, “Juli.” The festival was originally a celebration of the parish’s German roots. As Shakopee has grown, so has its population of Mexican and Central-Americans, a large Catholic group. The festival has expanded, too. Now a night each year is dedicated to Hispanic celebrations.

“I’m very impressed by the energy in the community through the variety of cultures, all united through their faith,” said Father Michael Daly, a priest newly assigned to the parish.

A Friday night dedicated to Mexican dances and food precedes a night of polka dancing and traditional German and Irish celebrations, representing three of the primary ethnic groups within Shakopee.

The city’s public and private schools provide the community with several strong educational options. The Shakopee Public School District serves around 7,500 students from throughout Scott County. This year, Shakopee High School began a $102 million expansion to double the size of the building.

Center, which should be completed by June 2017 and will include a number of activities for Shakopee’s youth and elders.

The Enigma Teen Center will be back and better than ever, and fitness and other activities geared toward senior citizens are planned.

LIVING SHAKOPEE ISD 720 The Shakopee School District serves more than 7,400 students in Shakopee, Savage, Prior Lake, and Jackson, Louisville, and Sand Creek Townships. The district has five elementary schools for grades kindergarten through fifth grade, a sixth grade center, two junior high schools for grades 7 through 9 and one high school for grades 10 through 12. The district also offers a variety of early childhood programs from infants to preschool programs for families, along with Stepping Stones Preschool and all-day, every day kindergarten.

SHAKOPEE SCHOOL BOARD The District 720 School Board is the school district’s governing body. It is composed of seven members, each of whom is a district resident elected by voters to serve a four-year term.

The terms have been staggered, with elections conducted in November of even-numbered years.

School board meetings are usually conducted twice a month. Regular

school board meetings generally take place on the second and fourth Monday of the month at 6 p.m. at the District Office board room at 1200 Shakopee Town Square.

ver the past 20 years, Shakopee has seen enormous growth in both population and retailers seeking to serve residents here. And, as the city’s population has become increasingly diverse, so too have its businesses.

The city has a multitude of “big box” retailers such as Target, Walmart, Cub Foods, Goodwill and Kohl’s. Residents were delighted to learn in 2016 that a new grocery option is on the horizon as Hy-Vee has announced it is constructing a supermarket on the west side of town.

The downtown area has been preserved as a place for specialty retailers and unique businesses, giving it a relaxed, yet cosmopolitan feel.

Shakopee Economic Development Coordinator Samantha DiMaggio said the city requires businesses have a retail element to be in the downtown. This helps the city keep a balance in its selection of shops.

“Shakopee has done a great job of recruiting diversity; not only do we have big box stores, we have a healthy stable of independent businesses,” said Angie Whitcomb, president of the Shakopee Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Bureau.

The Chamber of Commerce has about 300 member businesses, Whitcomb said. Each year, about 45 more add their

The city added to its large roster of big corporations with a Shakopee location in 2016. Amazon has officially begun operations at its new shipment fulfillment center on Shenandoah Drive, and Milestone’s shipping center was recently completed across the street.

hen Shakopee decided to cough up about a million dollars to add an off-leash dog park to the city in 2014, it was unknown how popular it would be. A year after opening, it appears the city was on to something.

“It’s well used,” said Sue Miller, a Shakopee resident who frequents the park.

“The dogs just love it here,” added her friend Diane Lusian.

Since Southbridge Community Park opened its 10-acre offleash area, with walking tracks cutting through natural prairies and oak forests in the summer of 2015, Miller and Lusian have come every Tuesday and Thursday morning to walk and let their furry friends frolic.

“It’s an awesome asset for the city and something Shakopee should be proud of,” said Carol Scheffler, who comes to the park daily with Simon, her 4-year-old Scottish Terrier.

Simon gets to run along his favorite paths, sniff friends and chase the few brave rabbits who have stayed in the area.

Scheffler said she knows people from Savage, Prior Lake and Chanhassen who come to the park on a regular basis and says someone will be there almost any time of the day.

“It’s a wonderful place but people need to have licenses on their dogs so you know they’ve been properly vaccinated,” she said.

The city of Shakopee sells dog licenses for $25 annually or $125 for life. In 2016, Parks and Recreation Director Jamie Polley said the city has sold 267 annual dog licenses, which come with a green tag to attach to a collar, and 79 lifetime licenses.

Per city code, all dogs in Shakopee older than six months are required to have a license, said Shakopee Police Community Service Officer Maurice Smith. The law is especially important for dogs who use the off-leash area at Southbridge Community Park. Smith said the department has not issued any citations lately, but not licensing your dog in the city can lead to fines.

DOG LICENSES Shakopee City Hall 129 S. Holmes St. 952-233-9300 Dogs, age six months or older, must be licensed in the City of Shakopee. Licensed dogs are to wear the license tag number on their collars.

Any dog found in the city without a tag or running at large can be impounded. Cats may also be impounded for running at large. If the owner of an impounded animal is known, notification of impoundment will be given. All dogs and cats placed in the city pound shall be held for redemption by the owner for five regular business days.
