elcome to Shakopee, a community that mixes business and pleasure. From 19th century local history re-enactments at The Landing to outrageous re-creations of the 16th century at the Renaissance Festival and the amusements at Valleyfair, Shakopee is an entertainment mecca for people of all ages and interests. Whatever your hobby or recreational interest, Shakopee offers something fun for everyone. The Community Center has an ice arena, walking/ running track and a teen center. Shakopee is also home to the Stans Historical Center in which the Maurice Stans collection and the county’s historical society collection are housed. It also has a large public library conveniently located in the downtown area. With easy freeway access, residential development has surged ahead especially in the Southbridge area south of Hwy. 169. Today, it is estimated that more than 37,000 people call Shakopee home — making it one of the fastest-growing cities in the Twin Cities metro area. The community offers both private and public schools, which work together to provide a good foundation for children. The city also has an extensive park system and the adjacent Minnesota Valley Wildlife Trail is a naturelover’s treasure. Get to know all of Shakopee. It’s a great place to call home. Scott County

A

s Scott County continues to lead the state in population growth, progress and change are evident throughout this community. From forging a new commuter express transit service to downtown Minneapolis (www.bluexpressbus.com) with its partners in Shakopee and Prior Lake to embarking on a parks and open space plan and more, Scott County is investing and preparing for the future. Residents can watch County Board meetings live and on demand, and learn more about Scott County’s programs, policies and events by visiting the County’s Web site (www.co.scott.mn.us), tuning in to your local government access channel for meeting coverage and other programming, and reading the resident newsletter (Scott County SCENE). Residents are invited to become more directly involved by volunteering to serve on a citizen advisory committee or by attending County Board meetings, which are held on most Tuesdays beginning at 9 a.m. (visit the Web site for schedule information).

Scott County Environmental Health Dept. ...................................................................952-496-8475 24-hour Information Line ............................................................952-496-8787 HHW Information ........................................................952-496-8652 Web site ............................................................ www.co.scott.mn.us/hhw Almost every home contains some household hazardous waste (HHW), hazardous products or chemicals that can harm human health or the environment if handled improperly. These are products normally used in cleaning, home improvement projects, automobile maintenance, lawn and garden care, hobbies, and a variety of other tasks. They might include paint, varnish, pesticides, household cleaning chemicals, solvents, fuels, wood stain or preservatives, rechargeable batteries, aerosol cans, fluorescent lamps (including tubes and CFLs), mercury thermostats or thermometers, automotive chemicals or batteries, appliances, electronics, tires, as well as any other household products that are flammable, corrosive, reactive or poisonous. Each year, thousands of Americans are injured or poisoned through incidents involving hazardous household products. Minimizing the amount of hazardous chemicals stored in your home is always a good idea for the sake of your family’s safety. The Scott County HHW Facility will accept a variety of hazardous materials from Scott County residents. Many of these items are accepted at no charge — visit www.co.scott.mn.us/HHW for details. Please bring a check or cash for those chargeable items, since credit cards are not currently accepted. The facility is located at 588 Country Trail East (Highway 282) in Spring Lake Township, one-half mile west of the intersection of Highways 13 and 282, and County Road 17. The HHW Facility is open at the following times: Wednesday: noon to 6 p.m. Thursday: noon to 4 p.m. Saturday: 8 a.m. to noon (Note: The RE-USE Room closes 15 minutes earlier) The HHW Facility will be CLOSED for major holiday weekends, including Easter, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving, as well as the period of Dec. 20 through Jan. 5. The RE-USE Room is fi lled with a variety of good usable products, including paint, stain, varnish, thinner, putty, adhesives, household chemicals, yard and garden chemicals, automotive chemicals, electronics, etc., and all of these items are available for FREE (to anyone over the age of 18)! A trip to the RE-USE Room as you plan your next home improvement or craft project could certainly save you some money! Reduce the amount of HHW your family produces by practicing “Smart Shopping.” Measure carefully, buy only what you need, and then use what you buy. Store any leftovers carefully, and protect from freezing, so that they will remain usable. Please note: The HHW Facility can not accept automotive chemicals in containers larger than 2½ gallons in size (fluids such as gas, oil, or antifreeze). Other unacceptable items include: household garbage, unknown materials, business waste (call for an appointment), radioactive items or sharps (needles). Regular alkaline batteries can be thrown in your household trash.

You’ll find a variety of offerings every Thursday in the summer at Shakopee’s Farmers’ Market, including this explosion of color. The market sets up in the parking lot of the American Legion Club on Marschall Road.

The council advocates for vital communities and a competitive region. It runs the regional bus system, collects and treats wastewater and manages water resources preservation, plans regional parks and administers funds that provide housing opportunities for low- and moderate-income individuals and families. The council serves the metropolitan counties of Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington. The region encompasses 189 cities and townships and a population of 2.85 million. It is divided into 16 districts. The governor appoints a representative for each, as well as the council chairperson. The council’s Web site provides information about the region and regional services. The Data Center has current data on aviation, demographics, the economy, housing, land use, parks and open space, transportation, and water quality and supply. Forecasts of population, employment and households are available, as are city and township data, regional plans, and water resources, and transportation information. All of the elementary schools are staffed with a full-time high potential resource teacher. There is a half-time high potential resource teacher at each school at the secondary level. The resource teacher develops and implements expanded curriculum activities and assists classroom teachers through team teaching, staff development, consultation on individual students and curriculum development. Resource teachers also work with individual students and small groups. In addition, the district offers after-school enrichment classes and activities. Helping our community learn for a lifetime

CAUTION: The majority of children killed in pupil transportation are not killed on the bus, but OUTSIDE the bus. Many are struck by motorists who fail to stop for the flashing red lights and extended stop arm. This area around the stopped school bus is often referred to as the "DANGER ZONE." PRE-WARNING SIGNALS

A school bus driver activates the PRE-WARNING amber signals at least *100 feet before stopping. When the amber lights flash, you should immediately prepare to stop your vehicle. * If the speed limit is more than 35MPH the driver must give 300 ft. of warning.

RED LIGHTS & STOP ARM

You MUST STOP for a school bus when the red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended; this means that children are getting on or off the bus. Stop at least 20 feet from the bus and remain stopped until lights are turned off.

The students became the teachers last spring, as the Shakopee High School environmental ethics class invited district fourth-graders to the high school campus. High school students set up nature-based stations for the elementary kids about fishing, geo-caching, micro-invertebrates, tree identification and plant life. Here, Shakopee High School senior Alex Arinze talks to elementary students at his water-life station.
