nquiring minds want to know. It’s this burning sense of curiosity that propels us out of our comfort zone and into the unknown. The 2020 Hutchinson Leader Readers’ Choice Awards is a time to share your favorite experiences by recognizing those who have made a difference — the hairstylist who gave you a new ‘do, the insurance agent who provided more coverage for less money, the bartender who shook up the perfect martini or the restaurant that served the best pizza ever.

Like you, we want to know about the best people and the best places to go. A record 28,000-plus votes were cast this year. The winners in 68 categories were culled from submitted online and paper ballots. Remarkably, the number of nominees has skyrocketed, too. Categories that drew many nominees were Favorite Hairstylist, Favorite Sandwich, Favorite Breakfast and Favorite Pizza.

Amelia Becker, a bartender at Birdie’s Bar and Grill at Crow River Golf Club in Hutchinson, was voted the winner in the Favorite Bartender category. When it comes to favorite drinks to make, Becker said she didn’t have one because she “enjoyed the wide variety available of things she could make.” “As for the most popular drink, I make a lot of (the) ‘John Daly’ at Birdies during the summer, she said, (which is a spiked version of the Arnold Palmer with lemonade, iced tea and vodka). “It’s very popular and refreshing for the golfers out on the course during hot days.”

Ashley Briekreitz, who is bar manager at the Elks Lodge in Hutchinson, earned a runnerup mention in the Favorite Bartender category. Last year, she and Amelia Becker earned first and runnerup, respectively. This year, they switched positions. The Elks Lodge also was voted the winner in the Favorite Bingo category. Briekreitz has worked at the Elks for four years. This photo was taken before the bar opened, so no mask was required. Her favorite drink to make is a Sex on the Beach. “I think it looks pretty but I like to make anything fun and different and love learning new drinks and shots,” she said. When it comes to drinks ordered at the Elks, people usually order beer, wine and rail drinks.
