Highway 169 provides easy access to Belle Plaine, which is conveniently located in southwest Scott County as a hub for many major thoroughfares. With a population near 7,000, Belle Plaine has maintained a cozy, small-town feel, yet residents are fortunate to benefit from amenities provided by Scott County, which is one of seven metro area counties. Residents also benefit from being a 40-minute drive into the heart of the Twin Cities, so there’s always something to do on the weekends, whether it be a Twins game, a night on the town, a museum or traveling Broadway show. Located on the Minnesota River Valley Scenic Byway, Belle Plaine is a great place to watch the seasons change, with apple orchards and popular fall activities.

SMALL TOWN WITH BIG ALLURE
T
he city of Belle Plaine — which is French for “Beautiful Prairie” — has an abundant number of parks, trails and green spaces. Even today, the city has select areas of protected, natural prairie grasses. “The Minnesota River Valley Trail starts here in Belle Plaine and it winds its way along the Minnesota River, all the way up to Shakopee,” said former City Administrator Mike Votca. “From Belle Plaine up to Shakopee it’s just a nice grass trail that a lot of people use for hiking. It’s a really nice, rustic trail.” The city of Belle Plaine is home to more than 20 city-owned parks, trails, open spaces and recreational areas, accounting for about 80 acres—or 2.4 percent—of the city’s total acreage. The community is highly walkable, with 18.5 miles of trails and 17.6 miles of city sidewalks, which provide access to all reaches of the city. Outdoor attractions aren’t the only allure of this small town with big-city amenities; take a tour of Belle Plaine and discover the Hooper-Bowler-Hillstrom House, owned by the city and maintained by the Belle Plaine Historical Society. The home, built in 1871 by local businessman Sandford Hooper and on the National Register of Historic Places, has a two-story outhouse, believed by many to be the only one of its kind. Belle Plaine is also home to the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, a Carpenter Gothic-style church that is on the National Register of Historic Places. The city has its fair share of festivals, activities and entertainment options, including the annual German Days and BBQ Days, the latter of which offers barbecue food, a carnival, fireworks and “everything you expect in a good city festival,” Votca said. Another popular city attraction is Belle Plaine Veterans

Belle Plaine is a stone’s throw away from a host of other regional attractions, including Minnesota’s Largest Candy Store (just look for the big yellow barn off Highway 169, south of Jordan) and a handful of area apple orchards. Belle Plaine is conveniently located between the two major hubs of Minneapolis and Mankato, ensuring metropolitan amenities are always within driving distance.

rom baked goods to pizza and from fast food to sit-down restaurants, if locals are hungry there’s a good chance their cravings will be satisfied in Belle Plaine. Many dining establishments are situated along Highway 169 and near the intersection of Main and Meridian streets. Visitors and residents alike can find a wide variety of selections and cultures in local menus spanning from fresh donuts to spring rolls and burgers to salmon. When those hankerings for something sweet arise, take a trip out of town to Minnesota’s Largest Candy Store, where an expansive soda selection, homemade pies and obscure candy can be purchased. The candy store recently expanded to include a science-fiction themed mural completed by local artist and Jordan High School art teacher Jessica Barnd. From May through the second week in October, a farmers market takes place every Wednesday afternoon from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Court Square Park on North Cedar Street. The farmers market is not operated by the city. The farmers market is family-friendly, said coordinator Rick Krant, who sits on the board of the Belle Plaine Historical Society, which sponsors the event. However, many take advantage of the market to visit with friends. “It’s kind of a social setting because people come to the market, but they stay there,” he said, adding in a given week the market features eight to 12 vendors offering things like jams, baked goods, maple syrup, fresh produce, local honey and jewelry. A couple of food trucks are also parked at the market, so customers can grab a bite to eat while they shop. Fair food like ice cream, gyros, pretzels, burgers and

elle Plaine’s city hall contains a license bureau and is located across the street from the post office. A fivemember city council represents the citizens of Belle Plaine in making decisions and creating plans for development. Council members serve four-year terms while the mayor serves a two-year term.The city police department recently launched a “Be seen, be safe” initiative, which provides free yellow safety vests for children and adults to wear while walking or riding their bikes. The vests increase visibility to drivers and make it safer to be out and about, even in low light. The project, which launched in June 2016, was funded with money awarded to the city by the League of Minnesota Cities for creative programming in public safety through Belle Plaine’s Tiger Watch program, launched in spring 2015. The police train Tiger Watch members, including local businesses, school personnel, and religious leaders, on how to respond to people in need and connect them to resources. A sticker is posted in their windows to mark them as a safe place to turn. “If we’re all on the same page, all looking out for our

community, we can create a support system around everyone who needs help, and they’ll know they have a place to turn,” said Police Chief Tom Stolee. Belle Plaine’s city council chambers, located in the city hall, are also home to a 179-foot mural which depicts life and events in Belle Plaine between 1870 and 1917. The Belle Plaine Historical Mural was painted by local artist Lana K. Beck when the building was still a reception and dance hall called “Pavillion Place.” It remained even after the building was converted into a new city hall in the mid-2000s.

or its size, Belle Plaine offers its residents a number of health care options, including a brand-new clinic that opened in June 2017. The new Ridgeview Belle Plaine Clinic at the Ridgeview Health Campus, 165 Commerce Drive West on Highway 169, offers area residents of all ages convenient access to comprehensive primary care and family medicine services. The clinic plans to offer same-day care for acute illnesses and minor injuries, annual physicals and other preventative health services as well as an on-site laboratory and an X-ray. “It will be a nice community clinic with the main services you need,” said former City Administrator Mike Votca. The Belle Plaine area is home to a plethora of health care facilities, including a Mayo Clinic Health Systems branch, and is within arm’s reach of nearby hospitals like the St. Francis Regional Medical Center and St. Gertrude’s Health and Rehabilitation Center in Shakopee. In need of a dentist, vision clinic, orthodontist or drugstore? You can find all of those options in Belle Plaine, too. KingsPath Senior Living, part of the Lutheran Home Association, is scheduled to open its 55-unit senior living apartment facility in October 2017, connected to the new Ridgeview Health Campus. Belle Plaine’s extensive trail system — which connects to a number of parks — encourages activities like biking, running and rollerblading. For those looking for competitive activities, the city is home to the Scenic Byway Half Marathon and 5K, which supports cleanup of a 61-acre site on the banks of the Minnesota River Valley along the northern edge of Belle Plaine. The chip-timed events start at Court Square Park and

rom a peaceful afternoon enjoying nature in one of the city’s many parks to an evening out with friends, Belle Plaine offers a number of leisure-filled activities and attractions. The city is home to about 30 miles of trails and sidewalks, said Community Development Director Cynthia Smith Strack. The community also offers plenty of playing fields, tennis courts, acres of city parks and even upcoming privately owned cricket fields that will be available to rent. Looking to cool off on a hot day? Check out Belle Plaine’s outdoor municipal pool that serves as a popular summertime stop. The pool has diving boards, a water slide, a large swimming area and a smaller wading area for families with small children. Stop by the city’s entertainment district in its downtown to grab a bite to eat at a cafe or enjoy a refreshment at one of the city’s drinking establishments. “My favorite thing to do is get a cup of coffee downtown,” said Strack of relaxing in the city. If you’re looking to take advantage of the Minnesota River, which runs right through Belle Plaine, grab your fishing pole and head down to the banks. The city holds a river fishing contest each summer where fishing enthusiasts go head-to-head on the water. Belle Plaine is home to a number of local parks, including Deer, Veterans Memorial Park, Heritage Union, Prairie, Meadow, Hickory, Century, Chatfield, Townsend, Founders and community area dog parks. Court Square Park — one of the city’s most popular parks — is not only home to a disc golf park, a park shelter, four barbecue grills, horseshoe pits and playground equipment, but it’s also adjacent to the Hooper Bowler Hillstrom Historical House. The house is available for tours provided by the Belle Plaine

The community is a short drive, or about 40 minutes, from the Twin Cities, where theater productions and a number of restaurants can be enjoyed. Minneapolis and St. Paul are home to a number of hotels, but there’s also one in Belle Plaine for out of town visitors. When temperatures cool down come winter, check out a book from the Belle Plaine Branch Library, part of the Scott County Library system, and curl up by the fireplace. The library also gives residents full access online to the library collection from the neighboring communities of Jordan, Shakopee, Prior Lake, Elko New market, New Prague and Savage. elle Plaine residents love the city’s small-town feel and the sense of community, which is highlighted as sunny days draw people of all ages together on the city’s sprawling trail system, and many parks. “Everyone knows each other, It’s nice to be able to say ‘hi’ to someone when you’re walking down the street. It’s real friendly,” said Dakotah Poitra, a Belle Plaine resident and sophomore at University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Close to the Twin Cities, Belle Plaine commuters benefit from the close access to Highway 169 and easy, convenient access to highways 19, 60, and 169 as well as metro transit options.A new overpass near the intersection of Highway 169 and County Road 3 off Meridian Street in Belle Plaine has increased access for residents, city administrative assistant Pat Krings said. The Belle Plaine school district is an attraction for families moving into the area, and prides itself on a caring staff, modern facilities and small classes. Private schools in the area include Holy Family Academy, Our Lady of the Prairie School, and Trinity Lutheran. Belle Plaine Community Education — in partnership with the city and school district — offers learning opportunities for both children and adults interested in learning more about subjects ranging from sports and cooking to business and computer skills. Within the city limits of Belle Plaine, there are several Baptist, Catholic, Lutheran, and Presbyterian churches while nearby communities offer places of worship of other faiths. Citywide festivals and events include a St. Patrick’s day celebration in the spring, German Days and BBQ Days in the
The population of Belle Plaine is 7,009 with a median household income of $71,954. summer, a half-marathon along the river in the fall, and a holiday event in the winter. Other community activities revolve around high school theater, concerts, fundraisers, reunions, and other celebrations. The city’s community swimming pool and many parks and trails are popular with residents and give the community a chance to come together. In the summer of 2017, the city approved a privately funded cricket field, with two regulation cricket pitches and a smaller practice pitch. The pitches are expected to draw cricket players from throughout the metro area, and provide a unique amenity for local residents. Belle Plaine is poised for continued growth, with recent residential development including 44 units of senior housing scheduled to open near the new Ridgeview Belle Plaine Medical Clinic in 2017.

A
leisurely pace, historic buildings, and gently shaded sidewalks make Belle Plaine’s downtown an enjoyable place to shop, dine, and work. In addition to seasonal festivals that draw both community members and visitors from across the metro, downtown Belle Plaine is home to a variety of restaurants, bars, offices, salons, and shops offering specialty goods and services. Shoppers can find a wide variety of gifts, jewelry, bakery goods, clothing, hardware and novelty items at local businesses that specialize in personal customer service. An initiative spearheaded by the city and local chamber of commerce will further brighten downtown, with a series of lights that will illuminate 16 trees and can be colored to coordinate with holidays and events. “These are very exciting times for Belle Plaine,” city administrative assistant Pat Krings said. The downtown, centering on the intersection of Main and Meridian streets, is not the city’s only trade zone, however. The city also has quick service restaurants, a large, upscale grocery store and two pharmacies, which allow residents to buy whatever medicine, pantry staples and personal care items they need without traveling to distant box stores. The town’s economic heartbeat is agriculture and farming, with family-owned farms tucked alongside residential areas and rolling fields of corns, beans, and hay adding beauty and tranquility to the rural landscape. Residents appreciate everything that a rural lifestyle has to

he Belle Plaine Animal Hospital and West River Veterinary Clinic are available to help all domestic pet owners care for their furry friends. Residents can also access a fenced dog park, where dogs have been able to run and play since the Belle Plaine Community Dog Park opened in 2013. It is located on South Market Street and operated through a joint agreement between the city of Belle Plaine and the school district. Dogs can frolic and socialize there during the spring, summer, and early fall, but in winter, the park functions as a hockey rink. Some parks also have plastic bag dispensers to help dog owners pick up after their pets. “That’s very dog friendly,” said Kathy Hinderscheid, a receptionist at the Belle Plaine Animal Hospital and owner of a miniature pinscher, long-haired chihuahua, and a short-haired tabby. “Personally, yeah, it’s a great place to have a pet... we see lots of puppies and kittens. ”Young people can learn about raising farm animals through area programs, including Scott County or Belle Plaine 4-H clubs, whose young members can exhibit animals at the nearby Scott
