Il Palazzo dei Musei BIBLIOTECA ESTENSE Conserva libri a stampa, incunaboli, cinquecentine e numerosi codici miniati dal XIV al XVI secolo. Il testo più prezioso è la celebre Bibbia di Borso d’Este, capolavoro della miniatura ferrarese (XV secolo).
GALLERIA ESTENSE È tra le più importanti collezioni italiane e r i fl e t t e gli inter e s s i d e g l i Estensi per la pittura e la scultura, ma anche per l’archeologia e le arti minori. Pregevoli il busto marmoreo di Francesco I d’Este del Bernini, il ritratto di Francesco I del Velasquez, il S. Antonio da Padova di Cosmè Tura, la Madonna col Bambino del Correggio, un trittico di El Greco, un Crocifisso di Guido Reni. Cospicuo il nucleo della pittura padana dal Trecento al Settecento.
The Estense Library Houses printed books, incunabula, sixteenth-century editions and many illuminated codices. Among its most valuable texts are the famous Borso Este’s Bible, a masterpiece of Ferrarese miniature painting (15th century), the Cantino Map (1498-1502) and the De Sphaera (15th century), which is regarded as the most beautiful illustrated astrological book of the Renaissance period.
The Estense Gallery The gallery contains one of Italy’s most important collections and reflects the Este family’s interest in painting and sculpture, as well as in architecture and the minor arts. Among the most valuable pieces are the bust of Francesco I by Bernini, the portrait of the Duke by Velasquez, the Madonna by Correggio and the small portable altar by El Greco. There are also many paintings by Po River Valley artists dating from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century, as well as important paintings by Cosmè Tura, Veronese, Tintoretto, Palma il Giovane, Guercino, Reni and Guardi.

The Civic Museums
Il Museo Civico Archeologico Etnologico conserva le più antiche testimonianze della presenza umana nel territorio modenese. Accanto a materiali del neolitico, dell’età del rame, dell’età del bronzo e della prima età del ferro si trovano anche testimonianze del dominio etrusco, celtico e gallico e della Modena Romana. Le raccolte etnologiche conservano tessuti, ornamenti, armi, ceramiche della Nuova Guinea, del Perù precolombiano, dell’America del Sud, dell’Africa e dell’Asia. Nel Museo Civico d’Arte quadri, ceramiche, strumenti musicali, strumenti scientifici e armi documentano le trasformazioni della città dal Medioevo all’età moderna. Pregevole la collezione di tessuti antichi del Conte Gandini.
The Archaeological Museum houses the oldest evidence of human existence on Modenese territory, dating as far back as 120,000 years. There are artefacts from the Neolithic, copper and bronze ages and from the first half of the iron age, as well as pieces from Etruscan, Celtic and Gallic domination and Roman Modena. The ethnological collections include fabrics, ornaments, weapons and ceramicware from New Guinea, pre-Colombian Peru, South America and Asia. In the Museum of the History of Mediaeval and Modern art, the paintings, copperplates and objects reflect the changes in the city and illustrate the transformations in figurative art production from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century.
