Murder Mystery Hits Woodland Park Last Friday February 24, local entrepreneuer Reese Rich was stabbed with a butcher knife and murdered at the Stratford Mansion during a fundraiser dinner. The “fundraiser dinner” was actually a murder mystery dinner theater that was put on by Impact Christian Church.

Volunteers from the church put on the mystery dinner to help raise money for two mission trips for church members. The dinner was $20 and open to anyone over age 12 to participate. There was also free childcare offered to children under 12 where they went to the downstairs section of the church and had their own murder mystery and other similar activities. The event sold all of their 125 available tickets to this one of a kind experience.

The dinner started at 5:30 p.m. with nonalcoholic “cocktails” and appetizers. The guests had a choice to be a character in the mystery or a spectator that still had the chance to guess the killer and win prizes. The guests started by receiving a clue about their character and mingling with other guests to get more clues. Dinner was served at 6:15 p.m. about the time a second Characters involved in the Murder Mystery Dinner Theater.

set of clues were given. The murder happened shortly after dinner and dessert. The guests were then given a final set of clues. A number of main suspects then had to stand up in front of the crowd and convince them of their innocence. At the end of the speeches the murderer confessed to the crowd and the crowd decided her fate.

The winner that guessed the correct killer first won the main prize and there were also prizes given out to the best costume and best actor.

The event had around 75 guests that were acting in character. The characters ranged from mayor candidates to newspaper reporters to human test subjects to James Bond wannabes!

In this particular story line the mayor candidate was the killer but was able to escape penalty due to a choice from a random member of the crowd. Overall, the night was fun for everyone!

The Impact Christian Church did a wonderful job of providing a fun thing to do in town on a Friday night. Due to the proceeds of the event a number of church members were able to go on either a mission trip to Ireland or on a trip to Thailand to aid in recovery services for victims of human trafficking.

Rumors proved true to the castle filled to capacity with the gathering of eccentrics, socialites, scoundrels, escaped mental patients and politicians. Dinner proved exquisite and the service impeccable, and the evening never lessoned in riotous banter, as chilling tension was felt

throughout from the time our gracious hosts, the Stratfords’ welcomed us into their castle.

Rumors spilled over into every course from appetizers through dessert as guests became sleuths in part to protect themselves from any mayhem that might develop during the affair. At times debauched and certainly to no surprise, a murder was committed right there during dinner!

Updates became available throughout the evening and guest were apprised to the possible suspects whose eventual fingerprints were found on the murder weapon. Sleuthing was necessitated by all to solve the hideous murder of a character many had become disenchanted with prior to his demise.

It was right out of an episode of Colombo, Perry Mason or CSI as 125 guests pursued the solving of the night’s murder mystery. Then finally, the verdict was in, an admirable and distinguished politician confessed to the murder but was NOT apprehended or charged…does that REALLY surprise anyone?

I enjoy the perspective of one who is not into “survivalism” but rather, thrivalism. I mean I spend much of my life on trails and in mountain settings and I have NO desire to fight for my life. If you offered me money to drop me off in the wilderness in my underwear with a plastic bag and a wet match, I would decline at any price. I LOVE being out there and I am a minimalist but, I want to enjoy the animals, the trees, the wildflowers, the snow capped peaks, the rivers, trails and open skies.

One way to cooperate with nature is to be prepared and to know when to prepare. In other words, to “have an idea what is coming”, gives a person time to prepare. Weather is one of those things that can often leave people groping for survival. Here are a few tips for connecting with the natural world around you and being able to make your own weather predictions.

High wispy clouds: These high clouds (cirrus clouds) typically are a sign of a high pressure dominance and mean good weather.

Low Puffy Clouds: These clouds, when few are fun to watch as you rest on a grassy mountainside. But as pretty as they can be, watch out when they become more dense and populous. These probably indicate a low pressure system and moisture moving in.

Cirrostratus Clouds: These guys are the ones that seem to make circles around the moon and also indicate a low pressure system moving in, and along with dew on the grass during the night, may be alerting you to an increase in moisture and low pressure for the coming day.

Smell: Plants are good at forecasting the weather as prior to a storm or precipitation they release more oxygen into the air and as a result give off that fresh smell. Be in touch with the trees, grasses, flowers and growth around you, it may be trying to communicate with you.

I recently watched Noam Chomsky’s docu-

mentary Requiem for the American Dream. I feel that sometimes information is lost to a hoard of our population because the difficulty in understanding politics and the big words associated alongside them. Those difficult to understand words are intentional and you’ll find out why if you continue to read.

The insights Chomsky displays are certainly not new, not to him and not to many activists. activist ˈaktɪvɪst/noun- a person who campaigns to bring about political or social change.

It is hard to deny activism when these 10 things are happening not right under your nose but literally right in front of your eyes, as your ears listen to the words of the intent: Reduce Democracy.

Chomsky finds this acted on by the very “founding fathers” of the United States, in the creation of the U.S. Senate, and in James Madison’s statement during debate over the U.S. Constitution that the new government would need to protect the wealthy from too much democracy. Did you know the senate was originally opted to be chosen by the wealthy, of the wealthy (for the wealthy)?

Chomsky finds the same theme in Aristotle but with Aristotle proposing to reduce inequality, while Madison proposed to reduce democracy. The burst of activism and democracy in the United States in the 1960s scared the protectors of wealth and privilege so much that they began to lobby for reduction of regulations. Moreover, they went to business school and learned ways to ‘beat the system’ rather than be a part of the system.

Chomsky admits that he did not anticipate the strength of the backlash through which we have been suffering; CEOS of corporations were once the engineers of the entire operation and if you look at the change you’ll find most money-making CEOS were business majors in college.

Shape ideology The division of state and church has always been a highly debated issue since the Everson vs Board of Education decision in 1947. Many of the U.S Supreme Court’s decisions about this matter involve education, therefore, their importance is great to school administrators and teachers who establish executive policy (who are receiving less and less pay as the years progress, with less job opportunities, fancy that huh?

The two men most responsible for the establishment clause’s inclusion in the Bill of Rights construed the clause absolutely. Thomas Jefferson and James Madison thought that the prohibition of establishment meant that a presidential proclamation of Thanksgiving Day was just as improper as a tax exemption for churches. They prohibited Congress from creating a national religion or establishment and placing any one religion, religious sect, or tradition in a legally preferred position.

James Madison would, as president, issue discretionary proclamations of Thanksgiving, calling for a day “to be set apart for the devout purposes of rendering the Sovereign of the Universe and the Benefactor of Man the public homage due to His holy attributes.” Unexplained is why Thomas Jefferson, as president, concludes a treaty with the Kaskaska Indian which, in part, called for the United States to build them a Roman Catholic Church and pay their priest, and subsequently would urge Congress to appropriate public funds to carry out the terms of the treaty.

Federal Judge Orders Fort Collins to “Free the Nipple” — from City Regulation Judge ruled the city ordinance discriminated against women and perpetuated sexualization of breasts.

Fort Collins women are now free to walk down the street without a shirt on — not that they necessarily plan to.

U.S. District Court Judge R. Brooke Jackson granted an injunction Wednesday halting a Fort Collins ordinance that prohibited women from showing their breasts in public, saying it discriminated against women and perpetuated stereotypes that sexualized female breasts.

“I find that the ordinance discriminates against women based on the generalized notion that, regardless of a woman’s intent, the exposure of her breasts in public (or even in her private home if viewable by the public) is necessarily a sexualized act,” Jackson wrote. “Thus, it perpetuates a stereotype engrained in our society that female breasts are primarily objects of sexual desire whereas male breasts are not.”

Although the case has not been finished, Jackson wrote that he would grant the injunction in part because he believes he will ultimately find that the ordinance violates the Equal Protection Clause.

City attorney Carrie Daggett said in a statement that the city will review the judge’s decision and consider its next steps.

“While the Judge has acknowledged the other cases upholding similar laws, he concluded he is likely to find the city’s restriction on female toplessness in public is based on an impermissible gender stereotype that results in a form of gender-based discrimination,” she said.

On Nov. 3, 2015, the city enacted an ordinance that prohibited females 10 or older from exposing their breasts from below the top of the areola in public or on private property if that place can be viewed by someone on public property. This ordinance exempted women who were breastfeeding. Someone who violated the ordinance could be fined up to $2,650 or imprisoned for 180 days.

Free the Nipple, an association of Colorado residents who advocate for gender equality, its founder Brittiany Hoagland and member Samantha Six filed for a preliminary injunction on May 31, alleging that the public nudity ordinance was one of the most restrictive in the nation.

In his decision, Jackson ruled against the city’s claims that law maintained public order and protected children. He also ruled against their contention that the order did not discriminate because male and female breasts are different, therefore do not raise an equal protection issue.

similarly situated. The court noted physical differences but said that was not enough to warrant different treatment from the government.

Jackson wrote that the mere sight of a female breast does not endanger children because — due to breastfeeding — it is one of the first things a child sees. Additionally, a child of any age might see a woman’s breast while she is breastfeeding, which is allowed by the ordinance, but no one has suggested that they are harmed by that experience.

“It seems, then, that children do not need to be protected from the naked female breast itself but from the negative societal norms, expectations, and stereotypes associated with it,” he wrote.

A law that allows women to show their breasts in public would not have a significant negative impact on the public, Jackson wrote.

“Frankly, even if this ordinance were not on the books I doubt that women would be regularly walking through downtown Fort Collins with their breasts exposed, or parading in front of elementary schools, or swimming topless in the public pool, as defendant cautioned us during the hearing,” he wrote.

“As with many other legal behaviors, common sense and sensitivity to the feelings of others tells us that there is a time and a place,” he continued. “It seems to me that the primary focus here is the equal right of women to expose their breasts in public, not necessarily a plan to make it an everyday, everywhere routine.”

He recognized that his decision to strike down the law would upset many Fort Collins residents.

Last Saturday many local chefs tried their secret chili recipes out at the 6th Annual Woodland Park Senior Citizens Center Chili Cook-Off. Every year the local senior center hosts a cook-off as a fundraiser and as a chance for locals to show off their cooking talents. The chili entry fee was only $10 and the admission fee only $7 that including tastings of the chili and lunch. Anyone who wants can enter then the Senior Center picks members from the community to be judges.

This year there were ten chili entries and four judges. The judges the Senior Center picked were Pikes Peak Regional Hospital Chef: Beverly Bouissou Chief Of WPPD: Miles DeYoung, Undersheriff: John Gomes, EMT: Stephen Monroe (from NE Teller County Fire Protection District). There were a total of seven red chilis and three green chilis entered in the contest. The winners were Kyle Rein, 1st Place for Red, Aline Goodchild, 1st Place for Green & People’s Choice, and Pat Key, Ent (one of our sponsors) 2nd Place Overall.

Teller County Economic Forecast: Sunny, with a 90% Chance of Repetition

The Ute Pass Cultural Center opened doors early with coffee and hot breakfast provided by the Circle H Smokehouse and Donut Mill last Wednesday for the annual Teller County Economic Forecast Event. Open to the public, the roomful of citizens of all backgrounds settled in for a full morning of forecasting provided by 10 featured speakers and ample question and answer time.

The Keynote Address presented by Brad Spivey, Chief Investment Officer & Vice President of the Park State Bank offered a visually supported forecast and comparative to his 2016 forecast, Spivey supported his projection of a slight overall economic increase by explaining, “Economic growth of 2% is not horrible, it sure beats negative growth. It supports a stable environment for business development, job growth, low inflation stability in financial markets and creates an environment of certainty for policy makers, businesses and consumers.” He concluded his presentation by reassuring audience, “I expect demographic trends,

However, what seemed lacking was a synopsis on business growth and a forecast of the town’s business environment, new business marketing and plans of city efforts to foster a positive environment for small business commerce which drives the ability for the City to pay for public works projects such as Memorial Park and The Aquatic Center.

Reports of area real estate trends repeated last year’s forecast of increasing property values and construction of new housing continuing strong yet unable to meet the demands of the shortage of available and affordable housing.

The Teller County Economic Forecast is hosted by Teller County Assessor Betty Clark-Wine, Fidelity National Title and the Woodland Park Chamber of Commerce.

Follow up story from “Operation 1 Charlie 3” Move Over Enforcement Detail from February 16, 2017.

A total of twenty-six law enforcement agencies from around the state, including the Teller County Sheriff’s Office, joined together on February 16, 2017 to enforce the “Move Over” law and educate drivers of its importance. Today, we report the following stats as a follow up to the efforts from February 16th: Total stops: 909 “Move Over” Violations: 585 (194 citations / 391 warnings) Driving while under the Influence of drugs arrest: 1

This was the third iteration of “Operation 1 Charlie 3,” named in honor of Colorado State Trooper Cody Donahue who was killed when a driver failed to move over, striking the trooper. We are seeing that our efforts are making a difference.

One report indicated that during the first enforcement campaign in December, approximately 70% of the drivers were not moving over. Last week, the report indicated that the number had dropped to approximately 30%.

Two more “Move Over” operations

are scheduled in the near future; one in March and another in April. Additionally, the Teller County Sheriff’s Office recently applied for a state grant to conduct seat belt enforcement during scheduled statewide enforcement periods. Last year, thirty drivers were arrested by Teller County Sheriff’s deputies for Driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol during these special enforcement details.

Keeping Woodland Park Beautiful Keep Woodland Park Beautiful earned the Keep America Beautiful President’s Circle Award at the recent Keep America Beautiful National Conference held in Washington, D.C. The award is in recognition of certified affiliates of the national non-profit in creating clean, green and beautiful communities. Mayor Levi presented award to KWPB members during the monthly City Council Meeting held Thursday night.

In qualifying for a President’s Circle Award, KWPB has met Keep America Beautiful standards of merit by conducting an annual Community Appearance Index, calculating the affiliate’s Cost/ Benefit Ratio, and administering activities in the areas of Ending Littering, Improving Recycling, and Beautifying Woodland Park’s Community.

And you thought no one was watching! Here are a few things KWPB had to submit proof of accomplishment: KWPB uses the Community Appearance Litter Index, a tool used to visually assess overall appearance of communities through indicators such as litter, illegal signs, graffiti, abandoned or junk vehicles, and outside storage. A team of community, business and city government representatives conduct the visual analysis using a scoring system ranging from 1-4, with “1” rated as “no litter” to “4” being “extremely littered.” Each year, KWPB volunteers grade their communities during a drive-by examination of the same areas at the same time of the year.

This provides an indication of the success of our town’s anti-littering education and other anti-littering programs.

The Cost Benefit Analysis is a measurement tool enabling KWPB to demonstrate their ability to leverage community resources by determining the dollar value returned to the community for every dollar invested by government.

And lastly, KWPB must engage in ongoing projects creating innovative ideas and proven strategies to help End Littering, Improve Recycling, and Beautify America’s Communities and ensure beauty is our lasting signature. The projects must continue to inspire and educate people to take action every day to improve and beautify their community environment.

Woodland Park has been involved as an affiliate to Keep America Beautiful since 2004. Keep America Beautiful, established in 1953, consists of a national network of more than 620 community-

based affiliates whose programs, initiatives and efforts, supported by millions of volunteers, help transform public spaces into beautiful places.

3/4 tsp(s) oil - olive 1/4 whole onion(s) - medium 1/2 whole garlic clove(s) 4 whole asparagus spears 1/2 tbsp(s) dill 1 whole lemon(s) to taste white pepper to taste salt 1/4 cup(s) Greek Yogurt - nonfat, plain 1 tbsp(s) cheese - Parmesan (grated) 5 oz sirloin - steak (1 steak is 4 oz) 5 whole strawberries 1 slice(s) bread - whole wheat

1. Chop onion and mince garlic. In a large soup pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the garlic and sauté for an additional couple of minutes.

2. Cut asparagus into 1 inch pieces, chop fresh dill. Add the 1.5 cups water, asparagus, dill, 1/2 tsp. lemon juice, 1/4 tsp. lemon zest, pepper, and salt. Simmer until the asparagus is very tender, about 20 minutes. Remove from the heat.

3. Add the yogurt. Puree the soup until smooth.

If you are making larger portions, you may need to puree the soup in small batches. Heat the soup without bringing it to a boil.

4. Meanwhile, grill sirloin and chop strawberries.

5. Pour the soup into a bowl and sprinkle with the Parmesan (add some finely chopped scallions if you prefer). Enjoy with grilled sirloin and bread for dipping. Serve strawberries for dessert.
