By Marian SAMPSON READING is key to a child’s education, and Port Stephens Council Library at Raymond Terrace is running Read and Rhyme to help young children develop an interest in reading.

Read and Rhyme is a free program offered by Port Stephens Council through the libraries.

The sessions are held weekly, from February to December, on Wednesday mornings at 10.30am at the Raymond Terrace Library and everyone is welcome.

Better Beginnings says that, “Reading aloud to children is the single most important activity for building the skills and knowledge necessary for children to successfully learn to read when they begin school... Children who are good readers are usually successful learners.”

A 2017 survey

conducted by Dymocks and YouGov, found that one in three kids has fewer than a dozen books at home and 39 per cent had 10 or less books.

There are concerns that access to books and developing reading skills impacts students in High School and the Workplace.

The Council’s free Read and Rhyme sessions are a great introduction to books and reading for children, you can find out more about taking part in Read and Rhyme in 2018 at the Raymond

In recent years, the provision of sandbags for residents during major storm events has been invaluable.

Kate Washington MP told News Of The Area, “Port Stephens SES is an impressive crew of volunteers and this addition to their Raymond Terrace base will help them do what

they do best - support our community.”

“Last summer we saw flooding in Raymond Terrace and bushfires in Karuah, and whilst the Christmas break is a time for celebration, it is also import to be prepared for all that an Australian Summer can bring.”

“The $10,000 grant will go towards the construction of a sandbagging area. I’m pleased to be able to support Port Stephens

SES and the important work that they do, on an entirely volunteer basis.”

The bagging of these sandbags is a massive task for Port Stephens SES volunteers, so this community sandbagging facility is a much needed asset for our community, making sure that even more people will be able to utilise the sandbags when needed.

Ms Washington said, “With the history of flooding and extreme

weather events in Port Stephens, this will be an important addition to Port Stephens SES’s facilities.”

Church donates to the Community

THE invaluable breakfast club program at Irrawang High School was given a special christmas celebration during the last days of term for 2017.

Trudie and Rodney Jenner from Woolworths MarketPlace Raymond Terrace played Santa to the students at Irrawang High School when they arrived to cook up bacon and egg rolls for Breakfast Club.

In addition to the delicious, fresh cooked rolls, the students were served Juice, candy canes and a HUGE tub of chocolates from the naughty but nice Santas helpers.

Lue Fagan said, “A huge thanks to Rodney and Trudy for volunteering their time and cooking skills, and to Woolworths for providing everything to make this possible.”

“Also a big thanks to Renee and all the volunteers who come along at 7am every Tuesday to prepare food for Breakfast Club.”

The Breakfast Club is a project that has been running now at Irrawang High School for a number of years.

It is an invaluable program, providing a nutritious breakfast for students, ensuring they start the day off on the right foot.

Liaison Officer Lue Fagan told News Of The Area, “ We were thrilled when Woolworths at MarketPlace offered to cook a special BBQ for the last Breakfast Club of the year.”

“Not only did they cook, but they brought everything with them to do so.”

“We very much value this wonderful community partnership,” she said.

“The smells wafting down the playground to the arriving buses had the students running up to enjoy the feast!” she added.

The students relaxed while breakfast was cooked, playing card games of Chinese Snap and just sitting around having a chat, which many of the students reflected was one

by the local community to the Tea Gardens Anglican Church Op Shop, it has been the practice over recent years to donate all proceeds from their Myall River Festival stall and the Op Shop Santa’s Christmas Toy Shop to local charities,” Parish Secretary Marie

“This year we are pleased to advise that this year’s proceeds of over $4,000 was shared equally between the Pindimar/Tea Gardens Rural Fire Service, the Tea Gardens Clinic Bus, Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Surf Life Savings Club and the Tea Gardens Public School. Each group received $1,000.

Celebrating Australia Day at Raymond Terrace

By Marian SAMPSON THE planning for a huge Australia Day on 26 January in Port Stephens is well underway with a program that is driven by the community and organised by some of Port Stephens Councils volunteers for the community.

Raymond Terrace will host the annual awards this year at Riverside Park and there is a huge program of activities and things to see and do with the family planned for the day.

Liz Akerman, Council’s Acting Community Development and Engagement Coordinator told News Of The Area, “The theme for Australia Day this year is ‘Everyone, every story’ – celebrating the fact that we’ve all come from different backgrounds and we all have a story to tell.”

She believes that it is important for everyone to come along and be a part of the celebrations across Port Stephens, with events being held at Nelson Bay, Raymond Terrace, Tilligerry and Karuah.

“There’s something for the whole family, with a BBQ breakfast and live music at Tilligerry, speedboats and jumping castles at Raymond Terrace and a fireworks finale at Karuah.”

I spent a lot of time coming up with appropriate gifts for my husband for Christmas. He opened the first one and said nothing. I jokingly suggested I regift it and he agreed. He opened the second one, which I had unfortunately left the price tag on, and he said, “You didn’t pay that much for this did you?”

Your husband sounds like the Christmas grinch. He obviously hasn’t been taught the subtleties of gift receiving. This is a skill developed over many years of receiving things that we don’t actually want, or even need, but we still have the ability to show, even feign, delight. It is a key learning area.

Perhaps your husband has a deepseated resentment of Christmas that stems from childhood. Nothing short of the psychoanalyst’s couch will be able to cure that one. But you could offer him some cues for the future.

These are appropriate comments when you receive a gift you don’t really like: “You shouldn’t have.” (You really shouldn’t have).

“I have no words.” (If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything).

“I’m feeling overwhelmed.” (I’m going to need a couple of drinks to come up with an appropriate response).

“Oh, wow, it matches the gift that you gave me last year.” (There’s a whole range of this hideous stuff?).

“I know the perfect spot for this.” (I knew that storage cabinet would come in handy).

“It’s perfect. Did you keep the receipt in case I need the next size up?” (My left leg wouldn’t fit into those shorts, you moron).

I hope that 2018 is an improvement on this year, Mrs JF, and that your husband becomes the man you deserve.

Port Power in the big league

PORT Stephens Power AFC have officially joined the Black Diamond Women’s AFL for 2018.

2018 will see the BDAFL Women’s field 16 teams across the Hunter & Central Coast with Port being one of four new clubs joining the league.

“It is a great sport to be a part of, we will welcome anyone who wants to have fun while putting in the effort to contribute towards developing us into a competitive football club in the BDAFL” Mel Nelson, player in the Women’s team and President of Port Stephens AFC told News Of The Area, “Female footy is growing at a rapid rate in the Hunter and I cannot wait to run onto

the oval for Round one, and experience it first-hand with my children cheering me on from the sideline.”

Mel’s three children also play AFL at Port in the junior league.

She said, “I know that them watching me play a game of their favorite sport on Saturday, and then me cheering them on in their games on Sunday will bring us closer as a family and create memories that will last a lifetime.”

PROPOSAL TO UPGRADE A MOBILE PHONE TELECOMMUNICATIONS FACILITY IN SOLDIERS POINT Optus plans to improve the telecommunications services in Soldiers Point and surrounding areas with the installation of a telecommunications facility at an existing site to improve coverage and mobile phone services in the area.

Optus proposes to install a new telecommunications facility at: - 5-7 Mitchell Street, Soldiers Point NSW 2317 (RFNSA No. 2317002) Involving: • The replacement of three (3) existing panel antennas with three (3) new Optus antennas at a height of 15.7m on new mounts; • The installation of twelve (12) new Remote Radio Units (RRUs) at a height of 15.7m on the existing tower on new mounts; • The installation of a new GPS antenna at a height of 16.7m; • Associated and necessary ancillary works to ensure the proper functioning of the telecommunications facility including cabling, earthing, signage, safe access, electrical works and replacement or strengthening of the existing mounting arrangement.

The proposed works do not require development approval. The proposed works are defined as “Low-impact Facilities” in accordance with the Telecommunications (Low-impact Facilities) Determination 1997 and “maintenance activity” as defined in Schedule 3 of the Telecommunications Act 1997. The proposed infrastructure complies with the ACMA EMR regulatory arrangements.

2nd Grade - After starting the season with a bang thanks to a convincing victory against Norths in Round, they have been winless since.

David Farmer, secretary of Raymond Terrace Cricket Club, told News Of The Area, “Even Mother Nature has been against this team, with rain robbing them of certain victory just two weeks ago.”

“They are a young team on the improve, and with a bit of luck, a semi final appearance may not be beyond them.”

1st Grade - The top graders are showing the rest of the club how to do it.

The team is undefeated and currently lead the First Grade competition.

It is clear to see that this team is out to make amends after last years disappointing exit in the semi finals.

They are determined to win the competition this year.

SO here we are, deep into another summer full of barbecues, aerogard and Australia’s national sport, cricket.

The Ashes may have already been regained but there are several battles going on on a cricket field near you, thanks to the Raymond Terrace District Cricket Club.

Here is a quick update on how each team is doing so far this 2017-18 season.

U12’s - Have four wins from eight games and are currently sitting fifth on the ladder.

U13’s - Unfortunately, they are yet to win a game so far this season, but they are showing encouraging signs.

U14’s - Have only won the one game but have been very unlucky having narrowly lost more than their share this season.

U15’s Have been impressive, especially since the team consists of mainly U14

players.

They have won four out of six games with 1 loss and a lightning affected draw, and are currently second on the ladder.

U16’s - It’s been a tough end to 2017 for this team as they haven’t been able to record a win in their six matches.

However, they are showing signs of improvement, and hope to see a big 2018 coming up.

5th Grade - These guys are a young team on the improve.

They currently have one win in the longer 40 over version of the game, but have also won two T20’s.

4th Grade - Are currently leading the competition in the 40 over format, having only lost one game all season. Unfortunately, they narrowly missed out on the T20 finals, on percentages, after finishing equal fourth.

3rd Grade - After a slow start to the season, the team have lost only one match, a T20, in the past seven weeks to be second on the 40 over points table, and have also qualified second in the
