By Rachael VAUGHAN LAST week, Irrawang High School, along with schools and and groups across Australia, stood united to celebrate the 8th National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence.

This annual day provides an opportunity to strengthen consistent messages that bullying, including cyber bullying and violence at school, are never okay.

Brand New Fire Truck

MINISTER for Emergency Services Troy Grant last week joined Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald to hand over a $325,000 firefighting tanker to Raymond Terrace Fire Station.

Mr Grant said the new Mercedes Benz fire truck will increase the capacity of Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters to deal with fires, road accidents, chemical spills and other emergencies in the Hunter region.

“The NSW Government is committed to providing our dedicated firefighters with the best equipment and technology available,” Mr Grant said.

“This state-of-the-art vehicle, known as a ‘Class 2’ pumper, features a highpressure pump capable of delivering 3,000 litres of water per minute.

“It is fitted with all the safety features expected of a modern firefighting vehicle and the rear of the truck has been remounted and modified to provide more room for fire and rescue equipment.”

This new truck will help firefighters better protect Raymond Terrace and surrounding communities and improve the overall quality of emergency response.

WHILE Port Stephens is already seeing grant funded projects being rolled out at Nelson Bay and Anna Bay, Council is working hard to deliver to more of the villages within the Local Government Area(LGA).

Nelson Bay has landed two grants one for the upgrade of Apex Park and another for the street scaping of the township seeing an overall investment

of $440,000 coming into the township.

This week we visited Irrawang Public School and learned about their SLSO program, and how it benefits the children.

Irrawang Public School Principal Stacy Mathieson told News Of The Area, “At Irrawang Public, we cater for the needs of our learners through differentiation and support for all.”

“Every classroom from

K-6 has an SLSO in their room for three hours a day, which is during the key learning times for literacy and numeracy.”

“They support students and teachers to access the curriculum in a fair and equitable way,” she said.

Mrs Mathieson added, “We also have SLSOs working full time in our onsite Department preschool and also in our three support classes.”

Year 5/6 teacher Mrs Lisa Ping said, “It’s fantastic to have an SLSO in the classroom every morning, so that all students have an opportunity to work with either the classroom teacher or the SLSO to support their

Easter activities

By Rachael VAUGHAN EASTER is a special time.

Whether it be for religious reasons or because of the opportunity to see family and friends, the Easter weekend is often a greatly anticipated period.

Over this long weekend, there is a plethora of Easter activities available to locals and visitors alike in Raymond Terrace and surrounding areas.

Terrace Central Plaza has Easter activities running all day on Saturday, 31 March.

From 11am-2pm children can meet the Easter Bunny, do some Easter craft and get their face painted.

At 11:30am, 12:30 and 1:30pm an Easter Egg Hunt is taking place.

Terrace Central will also be opening their new indoor jungle playground this weekend.

Bunnings at Heatherbrae have Easter workshops on both Saturday and Sunday.

The great MarkeeP Easter Egg Hunt is back and running until Monday, 2 April.

Kids have the chance

to win a MarketPlace Gift over the weekend, along the Voucher by simply walking riverside or a favourite park, to around the Centre noting enjoy a relaxing day while the down the number of MarkeeP weather is still warm.

DOGS communicate in lots of subtle and not-so-subtle ways, as I’m sure you know.

When they rip a hole in your new leather lounge, they are actually saying, “You know, I’m feeling a little bit disgruntled with the way you leave me at home all day, on my own, and you somehow think leaving the television going will make me think that you are still home. Well, I’m not quite that stupid.”

When they bring a furry and now unidentifiable creature to your doorstep, they are saying, “Sorry, for a moment there I actually thought I was a cat; I thought I was a feral cat, but now I remember I am a placid dog and I should just wait until 6.00pm when you serve me my kibble and mince.”

As dogs age, they slowly stop doing many of the things they used to do: making their own doggie doors in the flyscreen, jumping up on the legs of unsuspecting visitors, burying your old socks in the compost heap, salivating under the table as you try to enjoy dinner, and so on.

Instead, they take on mannerisms that match their age. They stare vacantly at open pastures, they sleep all day, they get stressed and start ‘sundowning’ at night, they lose their appetite, they hobble, they have more difficulty breathing and some even start slowly removing themselves from the family. With all these signs they are trying to say, “I still love you, but I’m really struggling, and if I could talk I would ask you to start considering whether I have the quality of life that I should have, or whether you are holding on for your benefit and not mine.”

Only you and your vet can make the ultimate decision, but I hope this has, in some small way, helped.

PORT Stephens Council has taken out the award for ‘Best Work Health and Safety Improvement (Large Organisation)’ at the 2018 Hunter Safety Awards for its leading workplace mental health program.

The program was developed in response to a review of Council’s existing mental health procedure, with an aim to reduce stigma, get people talking and provide highquality support to workers experiencing mental health issues.

Nicole Le Grange, Council’s Work Health and Safety Manager, says it’s an incredible achievement for Council to be recognised for its progressive approach to

mental health.

“Usually when people think about Work Health and Safety, they think of hard hats and hi-vis. At Port Stephens Council, we’ve moved beyond the physical to think about our workers’ overall health.

“We want to send our workers home in the same or better condition than how they came to work – and that goes for mental health just as much as physical health,” Ms Le Grange said.

Ms Le Grange said this award win brings Council’s total to six safety-related awards in as many years.

“It’s wonderful to be recognised as a leader in the WHS space, but what’s really gratifying is the real and

lasting changes we’ve been able to implement in our workplace.

“We set out to get people talking and reduce the stigma that so often comes with mental health, and I think we’ve been able to achieve that.

“But the job isn’t over – we’ll continually work to ensure that Council provides a platform for consistent and high quality management of mental health in our workplace,” she said.

The awards were announced on Friday 16 March and recognised companies and individuals in the Hunter region who demonstrated best-practice and innovative approaches in workplace health and safety.

PRINCIPAL of Hunter River High School, Mrs Deb Dibley, shared her empowering story at this year’s International Women’s Day breakfast in Raymond Terrace.

Deb is featured as this week’s News Of The Area ‘Human of The Area’ and shares just a small part of her admirable journey.

Deb’s childhood was not a picture perfect experience, with loving parents in a safe and happy home.

Deb Dibley said, “When I grew up, it wasn’t easy, it was tough.”

“I lived in a home of extreme domestic violence, I went to bed scared of a night and woke, scared in the mornings.”

“It’s tough living like that every day.”

“It took my mum until I was 19 to escape this life,” she said.

“She is a tough and resilient lady but, did not have the support or resources to leave earlier,” she added.

Because of her experiences growing up, Deb knew that education was her ticket to a life where she could make a difference in other people’s lives.

Despite school being tough because of what was happening at home, Deb stuck with it, even turning down a job offer to leave school and work full-time in year ten.

Deb completed her HSC, and despite knowing very little about university and what it offered, she thought she would give it a go.

Deb graduated from the University of Newcastle with a Bachelor’s degree

and a Graduate Diploma in Education.

After a plethora of enriching teaching experiences and roles, Deb gained the most rewarding position of her career, Principal of Hunter River High School.

Deb said, “My goal initially was to provide staff and students with a safe, harmonious and positive school environment.”

“By surrounding myself with staff of similar values, we have transformed the culture of our school.”

“We have growing enrolments and a positive culture that has led to improved parent satisfaction and public perception.” “We have high expectations of our students, they are happy within our school and are proud to say they attend HRHS,” she said.

“My message to our students – male and female

alike - education provides choices,” she added.

Deb is married with two children, and has instilled strong values in her children.

“My children have been very fortunate to have both a mum and dad who have encouraged and supported their education.”

“Please allow me a moment of gloating, my son Jacob, graduates this year with first class honours in a double degree of chemical engineering and business and my beautiful daughter Charlie, is an amazing young lady who is in her third year of architecture at the University Of Newcastle.”

Deb is certainly a survivor of a childhood that crumbled so many others just like her.

She said “It saddens me to think that in 2018, we still have such a problem with domestic violence within our society.”

the fight for tougher laws, education programs in all schools and resources in all towns and suburbs to support victims of domestic violence.”

“I share my story in the hope that I can inspire young people and particularly young

women and I hope that what I have spoken about may also empower you to reach out and mentor a young person, to allow them to see the potential within themselves, for they are our future.”

Secretary Kathy Young told News Of The Area, “We are looking forward to a great year, with lots of activities planned.

Raymond Terrace Senior Citizens has a fun weekend trip coming up on the 24 and 25 March.

The group will travel to Wingham, Kempsey and Port Macquarie.

They will host their annual Christmas in July, which will this year be held at Ettalong Diggers with lunch and a show.

Kathy said, “There will be lots of other fun activities and getaways, like our annual

trip to Scone Seniors Club and their return visit in August and September, and a week’s holiday to Tallengatta down south in October.”

“Then of course there’s our annual Christmas luncheon in December.”

New members are more than welcome to join, and enjoy these fun activities and make some new friends.

The club is open twice a week and enjoy spending time together on various activities.

The newly elected office bearers are: President Pat Burke; Vice president Merrilee Doyle; Secretary Kathy Young; Minute Secretary Margaret Almond; Treasurer Dianne Marsh; and Assistant Treasurer Robyn Campbell.

New flag for the Knitting Circle Memorial

By Rachael VAUGHAN THE Seaham Knitting Circle Memorial has received a wonderful gift this week from Dr David Gillespie MHR, in the form of a giant ceremonial sized Australian flag, measuring at four yards, for their memorial flagpole.

Mr Bill Garrett from Raymond Terrace RSL Sub Branch told News Of The Area, “This is a really special and historically significant memorial for our area, so it’s really great to see it presented with such an important and special flag.”

“We give thanks to Dr David Gillespie and his office for making this happen.”

The Seaham Knitting Circle ladies fundraised for, and built, a ten metre tall flagpole and memorial plaque one kilometre east of Seaham across the William River to commemorate the men from Seaham who enlisted in World War One. The memorial is thought to be one of very few in the country that was created solely for the soldiers of World War One, entirely by the women of the community.

The Seaham Branch of the

Red Cross was established in October 1914, with a woman by the name of Mrs J W Boag as President and Mrs Burt Adams as Secretary.

The group preferred to be known as the Seaham Knitting Circle.

At the conclusion of World War One, the people of Seaham welcomed back their sons, and mourned those lost.

Other memorials were created in the town, one being a memorial tablet in the Presbyterian church, and another being memorial gates at the School of Arts.

The knitting circle members decided to fundraise for, and erect a memorial flag pole, and did so on a patch on land on the eastern side of the river, donated by Mrs Boag’s family The memorial was placed at the front of the Boag property, on the eastern side, as the western side already had two memorials.

In the latter part of 1921, the flagpole was erected, not long before the Seaham Knitting Circle was disbanded.

Their legacy lives on in the memorial they created to honour the memory of the valiant Seaham soldiers.

By Rachael VAUGHAN WOMEN’S sport is growing in numbers, stature and importantly commercial viability in what has traditionally been seen as male dominated market.

Sports such as rugby, rugby league, Australian rules football, soccer and of course cricket have become a source of inspiration for many girls and women all over the country.

In the case of cricket, the rise in popularity of the Big Bash has forced broadcasters to not only televise the men’s competition, but also televise the women’s competition on free to air television.

This has enabled more

people to be exposed to women’s sport like never before, and it has been clear that those watching at home now want to be the ones playing.

But they have to start somewhere, and for many female cricketers in regional New South Wales, their travels will lead them to Raymond Terrace.

Raymond Terrace’s own King Park will host the Under 15s and Under 18s Women’s Country Cricket Championships later this year.

The Championships will consist of 16 women’s teams from across the state vying to become the Country Champions.

“Starting from Under 15s, which is their first step in rep cricket, you don’t know where they can go from there,” Country Programs Manager for Cricket NSW Bruce Whitehouse told News Of The Area.
