By Rachael VAUGHAN THE Rotary Club of Raymond Terrace hosted their ‘Annual Primary School Debating Competition’ this week.

The Rotary Club has organised the Annual Primary School Debating Competition for the best part of forty years, making it a well known and respected event on the Port Stephens schools calendar each year.

Year five and six students from eight local primary schools competed this year.

Participating students in the 2017 competition were; Raymond Terrace Public School, Irrawang Public School, Grahamstown Public School, St Brigid’s Primary School, Clarence Town Public School, Seaham

The final was held on 13 November 2017, between Seaham Public School and Wirreanda Public School.

Both Seaham and

Wirreanda had not reached the finals for the last eight years, so the experience was exciting for both schools to reach this level.

Wirreanda team members were; Eden McAusland, Ella Clayden, Lana Christie, and Kimrena Joe (Wirreanda Team Adviser).

Seaham team members were; Charli Codrington (Chair), Bridie Gillon, Veronica Nunan, Clare Moir (Seaham Team

Adviser) and Tahlia Jarvie.

The closely contested debate was won in the end by Seaham Public School, who argued in the affirmative “That society has become too politically correct”.

Seaham were awarded the much coveted Perpetual Trophy, which also included a cash donation to the school.

The Rotary Club of Raymond Terrace also generously gave a cash donation to each of

the eight schools that participated in the competition this year.

Every participating student also received a certificate.

Sharon Chambers from the Raymond Terrace Rotary Club told News Of The Area, “We would like to thank all the schools that participated, and especially the teachers for their time and effort involved in furthering the skill of public speaking.”

A SERIES of proposed minor amendments to the Port Stephens Council Development Control Plan 2014 (DCP) have gone on public exhibition for community feedback until Friday 1 December.

Local Environmental Plans guide planning decisions for all local government areas through zoning and development controls.

The DCP supports the Port Stephens Local

Environmental Plan 2013, providing detailed planning and design guidelines for how land can be used.

Jeffrey Bretag, Council’s Strategic Planning Coordinator, says feedback is now being sought on how these changes may affect the community.

“When the DCP was adopted in 2015, there was a commitment to continually review the plan and this amendment

addresses an array of matters that have arisen since its adoption,” Mr Bretag said.

“We believe the amendments will mostly affect those who regularly submit development applications, but there are several changes we really would like for the community to be aware of, especially around secondary dwellings, shipping containers and sheds.”

Mr Bretag says submissions can be made in a variety of ways up until 5pm Friday 1 December 2017.

“Submissions can be posted, emailed or dropped into Port Stephens Council during the exhibition period,” he said.

“Some of the key changes we’d like feedback on include revised drainage and water quality controls for developments, additional notification requirements related to subdivisions and new control requirements for secondary dwellings, multi dwelling housing, seniors housing, shipping containers and sheds on rural residential properties,” he added.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics released results of the non-binding postal survey undertaken on behalf of the Federal Government.

The question posed, Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry? Was answered by 79.5% of citizens.

In evidence that Australia has undergone a significant cultural shift in the past couple of decades, 61.6% (7 817 247) responded Yes and 38.4% (4 873 987) replied No. Of those who returned their postal votes in the Federal electorate of Paterson, which encompasses the Port Stephens Local Government Area, 65.5% (60 915) voted to change the Law, higher than the national average.

“Not really just for my son and his partner, but for my granddaughter Hazel.”

“My son has stood bravely against the criticisms and also embraced the positives, but Hazel is a baby and deserves to be treated as any other child living in a happy family with parents who adore her, which they do.”

“Instead, the Liberal Government wasted $122m of public funds to conduct an opinion poll.”

“I hope that the Marriage Act will be changed swiftly and without obstruction in the Parliament.”

“The Paterson electorate’s strong ‘yes’ vote vindicates my arguments around why I put that motion to Council.”

“All levels of Government exist to provide leadership on issues, and failing to pass that motion was a failure from Council to show leadership in our community; who, as it clearly turns out, support that very issue.”

THIS week’s PBL winners are the final awardees for 2017, bringing a successful year of rewarding our valuable young people to a close.

The PBL program, which stands for “Positive Behaviour for Learning” is a behaviour program in all five Raymond Terrace schools, that concentrates on rewarding good behaviour and not focusing on the less than positive.

Each week, News Of The Area will feature the winners within our Raymond Terrace publication, giving further public acknowledgement of the efforts of these students.

This week’s winners are; Felicity Webb, Hunter River High School - Awarded for raising awareness of the ‘Riding for the Disabled’ Association.

Illuminate Boomerang Park

BOOMERANG Park was lit up by a sea of lanterns over the weekend, with the coming together of community to put together the first ‘Illuminate Boomerang Park’ Festival.

Illuminate Boomerang Park was organised as a free, family-friendly event for all Port Stephens residents and visitors to attend.

The Festival featured a parade of lanterns created by residents over a series of months at public craft classes, skateboarding under lights, live music, circus performers, an exhibition of the park’s history, a glow room and an exciting fireworks finale.

The dedicated volunteers of the Men’s Shed had timber lanterns available for purchase, with all proceeds going to charity.

Food trucks and vans selling ice creams, coffees and fairy floss were on site for those wishing to purchase, and the hill was covered in families on rugs and camping chairs enjoying a picnic dinner together.

Councillor Paul LeMottee officially opened the event, praising the community groups and residents for banding together to pull off such a wonderful event.

Steve Brereton performed the smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country, moving up to the stage arena with the lantern parade, greeting locals, and welcoming them to celebrate on the land of the Worimi people.

Penny Amberg, Council’s Integrated Strategic Planning Manager, said this was truly a community event, with more than 30 community groups involved.

STUDENTS from the Support Classes at Irrawang High School have been working on a big project on the school farm for a considerable time now and have finally begun to reap the rewards of their hard work, and the fruits of their labour so to speak.

These dedicated students have been hard at work in their garden up on the school farm, planting, watering, cultivating and harvesting the most beautiful array of fresh vegetables.

“I’ll be continuing to push Council to invest even more into the park, as it is an historically underutilised asset and we need to be making better use of it.”

“I will be working hard to make sure this event comes back even bigger and better next year and into the future,” Cr Arnott said.

I am an only child and therefore responsible for my parents as they age and eventually pass away. My father wants to be cremated.

My mother wants to be buried. I think it would be nice for them to stay together in the one spot. Any advice?

Mr NB, Salt Ash Dear Mr NB, WELL, this is a macabre little Jasminda problem.

As if there isn’t enough sombre news at the moment with rare dugongs being caught in commercial fishing nets, Trump on the back foot after trying to put elephant trophy imports back on the agenda, and various other calamities. And now your email.

As much as I don’t want to think about death while eating my afternoon tea, Mr NB, can I use this opportunity to say that the best way to dispose of the dead is in a pod.

Now, I don’t know if these are legal in Australia yet, but I certainly hope, when my time comes, that my family will arrange a burial pod which will turn me into a lovely tree.

Can you imagine how much more aesthetically pleasing graveyards would be if people were put into a pod, complete with seeds, that then sprouted to life (with a bit of help from the organic matter). Grey gravestone or green tree? Spooky graveyards or lush forests? The choice is pretty easy.

Now, with your particular problem, if dad goes first, you can just pop him on the shelf in a little pot and then place him in the ground with your mother.

If your mother is the first to go, you can always sprinkle your father’s ashes over her burial place.

I really must go now, because my husband is looking over my shoulder, wondering why I am researching burial methods, when I am supposed to be helping him with the gardening.

Jeremy Bilson takes the stage on friday night from 7:45 pm, and it’s a performance you don’t want to miss.

Jeremy is a musical ‘jack of all trades’, suited to all musical tastes and preferences.

He was originally classically trained, and is a graduate of the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music.

Jeremy has branched out with his musical performances, and now gravitates towards soulful pop, rock and folk and soul covers.

He is a singer, songwriter and keyboardist, who is well suited to any private or public function/event including weddings, parties, business functions, café’s, restaurants and bars.

Jeremy has released two studio EP’s so far of his

music, ‘Head Above Water’ and ‘Fingerprints’.

His music draws on inspiration from artists such as Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, Elton John, Sam Smith, Billy Joel, Adele and John Mayer.

Jeremy has been performing regularly around the Newcastle region at local venues, weddings, corporate events and functions, as well as touring up and down the Australia’s East coast playing shows in Brisbane, Byron Bay, Wollongong, Sydney and the Gold Coast.

When Jeremy isn’t performing he teaches music full time at the National Music Academy where he specialises in teaching piano and song writing lessons.

Jeremy told News Of The Area, “After touring the New South Wales and Queensland coast performing and releasing my second EP,

I’m so excited to be playing an incredible night of live tunes at Bulahdelah Bowling Club.”

P-Tech launch

HUNTER River High School P-TECH students are becoming ambitious thanks to the commitment time. and dedication from dedicated teachers and industry partners.

P-TECH (Pathways to Technology)is the model being delivered at Hunter River High School, a partnership between education, industry and community.

It is a partnership with a clear purpose; to provide an industry supported pathway for young people to achieve, that strengthens their employment prospects.

Activities that link to The Pathways to Technology (P-TECH program) program has been offered to Year 10

students at the school since February this year.

Students took part in specific activities, events and information sessions that broadened their minds towards a P-TECH pathway in 2018.

A cohort of students have selected to study specific P-TECH pathways in Years 11 and 12 from next year.

This month, Hunter River High School opened their doors to reputable training providers; the NSW Department of Education Training services NSW, AMPcontrol Group, the University of Newcastle, BAE Systems, Tomago Aluminium, UAV Air, Varley Group, Department of Education NSW, Jetstar Airways, AiGroup and RDA Hunter, by hosting

By Rachael VAUGHAN RAYMOND Terrace Public School students have attended the ‘First Lego League robotic competition’ for the third year in a row, this year coming home with two trophies in their first double win.

Two teams of six students each competed, aptly named the “Terrace Terrors” and the “Terrace Titans”.

They received the ‘Research Award’ and ‘Inspiration Award’ respectively.

The Regional Final

was held at Baulkham Hills North Public School and the Raymond Terrace Public School team was the only Hunter based school competing besides Cessnock Public.

They competed against both private schools, homeschool groups and Public Education groups.

Raymond Terrace Public School teacher Mrs van de Wijgaart told News Of The Area, “The double win highlights the excellence of our 21st Century learners and is a celebration of quality Public Education.”

THE Australian Government will extend blood testing, water connections and participation in the epidemiological study to newly defined management areas previously not part of the Investigation Area at Williamtown.

The First Lego League robotic competition challenges young people to think like scientists and engineers.

Teams work together to choose and solve a real-world problem. of the health advisories regarding PFAS in the area around RAAF Base Williamtown.

Earlier this week, the NSW EPA announced new health advisories, consisting of the creation of management areas better reflecting the extent and concentration of PFAS identified in the Defence investigation.

These management areas extend beyond the boundaries of the

manufacturing and engineering, aero skills and aviation - remote piloting.

Hunter River High School is grateful to have such great facilities, teaching staff and P-TECH partners, who bring together all the relevant elements for their students to be their best version and industry ready.

They are also required to build, test, and program an autonomous robot using Lego mindstorms technology to solve a set of missions in the Robot Game On Friday 24 November, Investigation Area established by the NSW EPA in 2015 and are consistent with the findings from the Defence investigation.

Defence intends to continue its collaboration with the Hunter Water Corporation to connect residents to the town water network. This will now be extended to residents within the newly defined management areas where it is feasible to do so. Defence will be engaging with these

by PSSC, Club Lemon Tree and entry fees. It has been running for some 15 years under the umbrella of TACE (Tilligerry Adult and Community Education), a not for profit group connected to Port Stephens Shire Council.

This year drew entries from every Australian state with local writers from Medowie, Tea Gardens and Tanilba Bay featuring in the top 21 awards.

First prize ($500) went to Sophia Field from Victoria with her story ‘Chocolate Milk’. The same story also won the $50 Judges’ award.

Second prize ($300) was taken out by Tasmanian Freya Cox with her entry ‘A Colour of Loss.’

The News Of The Area award ($150) was for ‘A Child Named Warrior written by Rob Viskovich from Lane Cove in Sydney.

“On this day children will learn to code rescue, soccer and dance programming, using the same Lego Mindstorm EV3 robots.”

A community information session will be held at the Murrook Cultural Centre on 5 December 2017, and two community walk-in sessions will be held to present the finding of the final Environmental Site Assessment and Human Health Risk Assessment reports for Williamtown.

These reports will be released prior to the walkin sessions.

By Rachael VAUGHAN THE Raymond Terrace Disability Bowls group has just celebrated two successful years of operating at the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club.

Founder Adam Nicholas is looking forward to many more years and smiles on faces, and told News Of The Area, “This sport is for any person of any gender or age.”

“Our group is one of few in the country that accepts all types of disabilities and challenges.”

Lawn Bowls is a low impact sport where people with a physical disability can participate equally with ablebodied competitors.

There are no changes to the standard competition rules of Bowls applied when the disability teams play.

Lawn bowls is a fun and social team sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness abilities, disability or not.

The group usually run on a Wednesday night from 5.30 to 7.30 pm, and are affiliated with Endeavour Group Australia.

They are also supported by their sponsors, Optus Raymond Terrace and Raymond Terrace Bowling Club.

This week the Raymond Terrace Disability Bowls group had their Presentation night and Christmas party.

The trophy winner for 2017 was Maddie Petith, who proudly accepted the award.

The trophy was presented by Sigrid Jones, the Branch Manager of National Australia Bank Raymond Terrace Branch.
