007 Leaders at Raymond Terrace Public

By Rachael VAUGHAN RAYMOND Terrace Public School is proud to announce not only their 2018 elected School Leaders, but their whole Year Six leadership team.

The School offers a wonderful program for Year Six students, challenging them to all rise up and be leaders for those students in the Grades below them.

Year Six students all complete three days of training, involving one day at school with an external trainer, before heading to Riverwood Downs for one night and two days.

At Raymond Terrace Public School, “Big Looks After Little” and it’s this cohort of Year 6 students’ turn to take pride in leading their school.

Leadership is formally taught to the students through their intensive 007 ‘Licence to Lead’ training, which not only takes place on those three days, but continues throughout the year with ‘007 catch-ups’ and open student forums.

007 leaders have responsibilities to lead through playground activity duties, where they engage the younger kids in turn-taking, game activity and positive supportive dialogue.

Raymond Terrace Public School Deputy Principal Andrew Price told News Of The Area, “We actively aim to take this special training and help these students use them in practical examples, so that when they return, they can walk

the walk and talk the talk.”

“Traditionally Schools only train the small number elected, but we want to give the entire grade transferable skills that can then be used at home, school, sporting teams, dance, church and anywhere else.”

When Year Six students graduate from these three days of 007 training, they receive their own ‘Licence to Lead’ card, which has been generously supported by local businesses like the Aussie Pizza Company who offer card holders ‘Cheap Tuesday’ prices on their menu all week.

The School 007 Leaders are expected to lead the School by the core values of Raymond Terrace Public School - Show respect, keep hands off, use friendly talk, do as you are asked and be in the right place.

AT the upcoming Port Stephens Council meeting on 27 February 2018, Council will consider a Notice of Motion proposed by Cr Giacomo Arnott, West Ward Councillor, to facilitate the purchase and installation of defibrillators at sports venues across Port Stephens.

At a recent West Ward Sports Council meeting, Sports people from all sports and all Clubs joined together to support defibrillators being installed at each sports complex, to ensure that if and when they are needed, they

can be accessed and potentially save lives.

The discussion emanated from a recent incident at Lakeside Sports Complex, where the quick-thinking actions of local cricketers ensured that a defibrillator was sourced from the nearby Lakeside Leisure Centre for a player who had suffered a heart attack.

Medowie Clubs already benefit from this safety feature, with all Clubs currently fitted with a defibrillator machine, and it would a fantastic asset to see this same statistic carried across all Clubs in Port

Aunty Margo FROM Page 1 In 2013, Aunty Margo (Margaret Beaven) visited Irrawang Public School (IPS), as she had heard about an Art project that had been funded through the local Council, in partnership with Thou-Walla School Community Centre and Irrawang Public School.

The project provided an opportunity for Aunty Margo to paint and tell her story of growing up and being part of the ‘Stolen Generation’.

a large mural and wrote a poem “My Journey” telling her story, which she gave to the School to display in the School Hall.

Aunty Margo’s painting tells many stories of her life, and also includes areas where she grew up that are very special to her in the Port Stephens area, but most importantly how her and her family were impacted by the ‘Stolen Generation’.

In November 2015, Aunty Margo commemorated the 60th anniversary of her siblings returning home, by inviting IPS and Hunter River

High School communities to be part of this journey.

Since then Aunty Margo has worked and volunteered at IPS and Thou-Walla, supporting children with their identity, sharing her culture and raising awareness of the Stolen Generation.

Aunty Margo has shared her poem with numerous people, from Principals, Teachers, Service providers, at School assemblies and Health Organisations to give an insight into her life.

through a local Aboriginal Council Grant, Aunty Margo has had her poem turned into an animated short film that she is hoping to share with the wider community and for generations to come.

Principal of Irrawang Public School, Stacy Mathieson told News Of The Area, “As a School community, we feel blessed to have Aunty Margo here.”

“By sharing her story, she is raising awareness of her culture, of her journey as part of the Stolen Generation and her healing process.”

“Her story is empowering to our children and families and demonstrates how we can move forward together,” she said.

On Thursday 22 February at 12:30, Irrawang Public School and ThouWalla will be acknowledging her story and the great knowledge she has passed on to our community, as part of a commemorative event marking the 10th year anniversary of Kevin Rudd’s Apology to the Stolen Generation.

Help with School Supplies

By Rachael VAUGHAN A GROUP of communityminded Mothers in Logan in Queensland have created an online community to assist parents who are struggling to meet their children’s Backto-School needs, and their compassion has extended all the way down to New South Wales and into Port Stephens.

Organiser Renee Hancock created a Facebook community entitled “Children Are The Future - School Supplies Donations”, which has created a place online where parents who need help can reach out for support, and where others who have spare supplies can donate them, knowing that the books, pens, pencils, stationery and uniforms they donate will go to families that really need them.

Only created on January 28 2018, the Group has proven to

be very successful, with already 1,832 users signed up and the Organisers have been inundated with offers of support and from families reaching out for help.

The community was the brainchild of Mother of two Renee Hancock, who has explained what inspired her to create the Group.

“We all know someone who has struggled in the past to purchase school items, I know what it is like myself: and so I have come up with the idea to create a Group for parents or carers struggling with getting school supplies.”

“The aim of this Group is to get donations which will help those parents who are in need or struggling to be able to get anything School-Supplies related.”

Jodie told News Of The Area, “We need anything School related, pencils, pens, lunch boxes, but also items for the senior students who are often overlooked.”

“We are in need of items for High School students, like scientific calculators, geometry sets and headphones for computer work.”

“Anything you have spare will be welcome, there are so many families in our local area in need,” she said.

Celebrating 70 Years of Wedded Bliss

AS milestones go reaching a seventieth Wedding Anniversary is pretty special.

Betty and Allan Rowe are going to celebrate their 70th Platinum Wedding Anniversary on 6 March.

Allan is 92 and Betty is 90 years old but they are both young at heart.

The couple are friendly, chatty and enjoy their lives together in their villa, where they play a game of Rummikub every day to keep their minds sharp.

Allan spends time on his computer while Betty reads nearly every day in the sunroom.

Allan started using computers at the age of 75 and still manages to touch type, a skill he learnt during his working life.

Betty Rowe told News Of The Area, “The secret to their marriage comes down to faith in Christ, as it is he who has kept us day by day.”

She believes that she and her husband have also had great support from family and friends throughout their marriage.

Allan and Betty will be celebrating their 70th Anniversary with Family, which means that they will be surrounded by their three sons, Bruce, Geoffrey and Phillip, their seven surviving grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

They will also be joined by their honorary grandchild from the United States who they opened their home to in 1988 as she is flying back out to Australia for this very special occasion.

The team at News Of The Area wish the Rowe’s a wonderful Platinum Wedding Anniversary and a year filled with health and happiness.

Groovin’ the Moo sounds pretty placid. When I say those words I imagine a small group of happy hippies in their 60s, blissed out in a meadow with some cows, a flute and a tambourine. They are singing songs such as Sounds of Silence and California Dreamin’.

Maybe they are smoking some cow dung, but that’s about as radical as it gets. They can’t cause too much mischief because they keep tripping over their flares and falling over.

As the sun sets, they sit in a circle singing Kumbaya and drinking kombucha.

Of course if that was the reality of Groovin’ the Moo, your 14-year-old daughter wouldn’t want to attend. So think about what she would like to attend. I’d imagine it would be an event with hundreds of young people full of euphoria listening to suggestive lyrics, making sweaty human pyramids, moshing and getting lit (I’m not sure what getting lit is, but it can’t be good thing).

The positive in all of this is that these events are well organised with lots of security.

There will also be a whole lot of parents, just like you, Mrs LK, who will attend the event wearing some sort of camouflage to spy on your offspring to make sure they are safe.

And the 14-year-old kids will be thinking: What are all these hippy has-beens doing at our event? Didn’t they get over all of this at Woodstock? Why are they gate crashing?

And now they are dancing! And now they are moshing! And now they are getting lit!

Aaaaaargh, Sebastian, is that your father dancing with my mother to Grinspoon? Oh my God, she’s getting up on his shoulders. My eyes are burning with embarrassment. Let’s get out of here and watch a movie. This is so hideous.

Mayoral Academic Scholarships awarded THE 2018 Port Stephens Mayoral Academic Scholarships have been awarded to 18 talented and inspiring students, thanks to the financial support of local businesses.

Fifteen businesses generously contributed $36,000 collectively to the Scholarship pool the largest amount ever received.

Valued at $2,000 each, the Scholarships provide financial assistance to residents from the Port Stephens Local Government Area who are starting university or TAFE in 2018.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says the program highlights the capability and dedication of our local students.

“It’s fantastic to see the students of Port Stephens so committed not only to their own professional development, but also wanting to give back to their community through their professional choices,” Mayor Palmer said.

“From student Paramedics, Doctors and Chemical Engineers to Wildlife Conservation and Environmental Studies, the talent and determination of

PORT Stephens District Scouts are hosting an Open Day at two different locations for young people to come and give scouting a go.

The two locations hosting events are the Tilligerry Park next to the RSL and Sports Club, and Raymond Terrace at Lakeside Sports fields.

The Open Days will take place on Sunday 25 February 2018, giving members of the community the opportunity to come along and try out the adventures their local Scouts have to offer.

Jane Hogno, District Commissioner Port Stephens, says the event

is a great opportunity for young people and their parents to learn more about Scouting, and the programs and activities in place to help youth members develop confidence, resilience and responsibility.

“Youth will be able to join a free six-week trial period, meet the Leaders, and get a glimpse of what activities the Group has planned throughout the year,” she said.

Scouts is a world wide Organisation for youth aged from six to twenty-six years.

Over the Australia Day long weekend, seven Raymond Terrace athletes competed at the NSW Country Championships held in Wollongong.

They won a total of 12 medals, eight Gold, three Silver and one Bronze.

Under 12 Sienna Newton won Gold in Long Jump, 100m and 200m, and her sister Under 14 Ebony, finished with Gold in the 100m, 200m and 200m Hurdles; and Silver in the 80m Hurdles.

Under 16 Jack Kenny won Gold in the Javelin with a throw of 48.32 which was an incredible 16.16m ahead of second place.

Under 17 Ellen Ditton won Silver in the 100m Hurdles, Under 18 Duncan Akerman finished with a Silver in Shot Put; and 17 year old Belle Leonard, in the Under 20’s won Gold in the 100m Hurdles and Bronze in the 400m hurdles.

Competing again in the Under 20 100m hurdles, seventeen year old Belle Leonard, turned in a Gold medal winning performance.

Athletics is approaching the end of the current season, but the Under 7 to Under 17 athletes especially will be trying to finish with their best performances at the three remaining meets at their Centre - the Little Athletics Regional Championships and concluding with the Little Athletics State Championships.

GRAHAMSTOWN ROAD TEMPORARY CLOSURE Due to construction work Grahamstown Road will be closed for approximately five weeks from Tuesday 20 February 2018.
