CONFIRMING that it was the season to be jolly, the Fingal Bay Probus Club’s home ground hosts, the Fingal Bay Sports and Recreation Club, prepared a special area for our Christmas lunch. Beautiful seasonal table settings were enhanced by organiser members Edith and Rex Sneyd who provided a variety of nibbles to enjoy as well as bon-bons and other delights. Paper hats were soon donned and groans were heard as punning jokes were read out.

Before lunch entertainment was provided by Ukelestra, an obvious choice as it is a talented group meeting at the Sports Club as regularly as the Probus Club – and

Landcare Change Creates Opportunities

THERE has been a core group of volunteers enhancing the parklands of Corlette for many years.

As they work to beautify the region and preserve the endemic species, the wider community gets to enjoy the changes that they make.

This includes regularly repainting the Council tables and chairs as well as planting, weeding and seeking additional funds for their projects, like installing BBQ

table shelters..

In 2019 the structure of the group will change, but little else will change for the regular volunteers who just want to turn up and work.

Volunteers for the Group are able to pick and choose which sites they work at and the pace they want to work.

Margaret Wilkinson of the Landcare Group told News Of The Area, “I will still be coordinating working bees with the help of Shirley Harvey and Richard Davis.

Petty theft might not seem much or even come up on some people’s radar, but when it literally steals the joy of Christmas from children it needs to be addressed.

NSW Rugby develops local Juniors

MEDOWIE and Districts Rugby Union Club is going big in preparation for the 2019 season.

The newly elected Club executive committee has been working hard over the last two months planning and brainstorming ideas that will promote Rugby Union in the Medowie and surrounding communities in the future.

The new Club President Johan Kruger said, “I am

very proud of my executive team and believe the positive energy and enthusiasm that comes from the new members will make the coming season a successful one.”

On Tuesday 4 December the team met with Michael Howell, the Junior Rugby development representative from NSW Rugby Union to discuss some ideas that will benefit the Medowie and surrounding communities.

The meeting was considered a major success as

NSW Rugby steps up to lend a hand in developing junior players.

Under nine Junior Lucas Stokes said, “I love being part of the team and can’t wait to be on the field.”

There are some promising events coming up early in the new year starting with a junior rugby development camp hosted in Armidale from 13-17 January 2019.

The development camp is designed to improve players skills supported by high profile coaches including NSW Rugby Union representatives.

Keep Making a Difference

By Heather SHARP IN MAY 2018, a Port Stephens resident started a transformation that would forever change him physically and mentally.

Mr Darren Bisson was offered a place on a 25-person International team to represent Movember at the TCS New York City Marathon as one of three Australians on the team.

For Darren the journey was personal.

Earlier this year Darren started to experience chest pains and mental distress.

This was at the culmination of what had been a very dramatic period in Darren’s family environment over the previous 18 months.

He realised he needed help and reached out to ask for it.

Test results showed there were no physical or medical issues with his heart and more than likely his symptoms were linked to anxiety.

During this time, an opportunity to run the TCS NYC Marathon came up and this gave Darren something to focus on for his physical and mental health.

Through training and his regular visit to his psychologist, Darren managed his diagnosed anxiety and depression through exercise and did not require medication.

Darren went from completing his first 5km training run in May to competing in the 12km

Maitland River Run, 14km City2Surf, Half Marathon Lake Macquarie Running Festival, and Half Marathon Forster Running Festival.

Most importantly, Darren raised $5000 for Movember, thanks to the support of friends, family and work.

He is currently the highest individual fundraiser within the Australian Defence Force and his TCS New York City Marathon team has collectively raised $198,629 for Movember.

Darren’s wife Rebecca continued to support him and was able to join him in New York to support him as he ran toward the finish line.

He completed the TCS NYC Marathon in 5 hours, 50 minutes and 49 seconds.

Darren told News Of The Area, “With thousands of supporters lining the streets through Brooklyn, The Bronx, and Manhattan yelling out

their support, it was very easy to forget that you were running 42.2km and just soak up all the atmosphere of the day.”

His marathon running days are not over with plans already underway for 2019 and beyond.

Darren would like to continue to support Movember into the future and help raise awareness for Men’s Health, in particular Men’s mental health.

Darren says, “Don’t be afraid to ask for help”.

“It might be the hardest step to make and things may feel like they will get worse after this step but in time, things can and will improve,” said Darren.

Toddler Drowns in Pool A TODDLER drowned in a backyard swimming pool at Bobs Farm last Sunday.

At about 6.40pm

(Sunday 16 December 2018), Police were called to the Marsh Road home at Bobs Farm, after a 19-month-old boy was found unconscious in the pool.

Ambulance paramedics attended and performed CPR,

however the boy died at the scene.

Initial investigations suggest there were no suspicious circumstances involved.

Students making a difference

IRRAWANG High School are well known for their Creative and Performing Arts, and sporting achievements.

However, this year Irrawang has evoked a strong sense of community spirit and generosity.

Throughout this year they have held many charity donation and awareness days at school.

The students and staff have all been involved in organising the various events and collecting the donations.

Irrawang has raised a whopping $18,122 for charities such as Buy a Bale, Cerebral Palsy Alliance, Beanies for Brain Cancer, Legacy, Red Shield, Stewart House and Beyond Blue.

This tally doesn’t include the thirty or more cartons of much needed goods, that were collected by Buy a Bale for the farmers, or the products

donated for the ‘It’s in the Bag’ appeal just this month.

Principal Paul Baxter said, “What I love most is the feeling of being part of our wonderful community both within the school and in our wider community.”

Each year Share the Dignity calls on Australians to donate essential hygiene items as part of ‘It’s in the Bag’ Christmas donation drive.

Since 2015 the charity has collected more than 1.2 million packets of sanitary items.

A local Port Stephens ‘Shero’, Ms Yvette Taylor told News Of The Area, “I am constantly humbled by people’s’ generosity and willingness to ensure that the women we provide bags for feel valued and supported.”

“One of my responsibilities is to facilitate the transportation of bags from the bulk donations in Sydney to our regional and remote areas of New South Wales.”

“It’s a logistical challenge and requires some planning but so rewarding when we are able to deliver areas like Coonamble, Wilcannia and Narrabri before Christmas.”

Port Stephens donations will make this Christmas a little easier for many women and girls in need.

Many handbags full of sanitary and personal items were donated at Bunnings to

help homeless woman and girls.

Every small donation goes a long way in the lives of those

who need it the most.

Rick, Raymond Terrace HI Rick, Beside from my usual advice of always presenting a home immaculately, stylishly and clutter free, one of the other things I love to see my sellers doing is to assist in the promotion and ultimately help sell their own property. So when you see your home FOR SALE online, jump on board and share the link to the listing with all your friends and family on your Facebook and social media pages.

You may think that your friends and family won’t be interested or that you’re spamming them with your personal advertisement but seriously, who cares? One of them might actually be interested in buying it or they may know someone who is seeking a home just like it.

A lot of the time people have family who want other family members to move closer to them as well, so it’s certainly worth sharing. Request that your friends and family share it too.

Another tip is not to just promote it once, share your property and talk about your property whenever an opportunity arises. Give yourself every possible chance of a successful sale!

Tomaree Ladies Probus Club Celebrates Christmas

IT has been a wonderful year for the members of the Tomaree Ladies Probus Club, with plenty of social activities occurring right through the year.

The Probus Club is an Association for active members of the community and for those no longer working full time to join together in Clubs for a new lease of life.

Probus is a community service activity of Rotary Clubs.

The Club’s purpose is to advance intellectual and cultural interests amongst adults, and to provide regular opportunities to progress healthy minds and active bodies through social interaction and activities, expand members’ interests and to enjoy the fellowship of new friends.

The Tomaree Ladies Probus Club delivers on all the Probus tenants with the ladies enjoying many outings and activities throughout the year.

Recently the Club celebrated the Christmas season together by holding a lunch where the

members and their spouses came together.

Julie McAllister told News Of The Area, “It was wonderful to see all the members getting together to celebrating Christmas.”

The event was the final one for the year with the Tomaree Ladies Probus Club already set for action in 2019.

Dear Mrs EL, IN theory I think Secret Santa is a fantastic idea. Being a one gift option, it saves lots of swearing and lots of landfill. In reality, it can be just as fraught. First of all, because it is ‘secret’, you go through the rigmarole of picking a name out of a hat. Then the complaints start: ‘I don’t want Maria. She’s too difficult to buy for.’; ‘I got Jim last year, I’m not having him twice’; ‘I just selected my own name.’ And on it goes. It can actually go for longer than a game of UNO with a sevenyear-old, which is a mighty long time.

The next thing that happens, from my experience, is your other half will say, ‘I got your mum, but you know her so much better than I do; can you just pick something up, you’re going shopping anyway.’ Thus defeating the entire purpose of the stress-free Secret Santa concept.

Then there’s the price issue. We always had a fifty-dollar limit, but my mum would not only buy something double the price, but make disparaging comments about those who managed to abide by the rules, thinking they were doing the right thing. The phrase ‘tight as a fish’s arsehole’ springs to mind.

This year, to keep things simple, all adults are buying their own gifts, wrapping them themselves, and then feigning surprise when they unwrap something they actually want, within their price range, and without any withering gazes, or ‘I feel as though you don’t even know me’ eye rolls, or ‘Did you keep the receipt’ rudeness, or ‘Where on God’s green earth will I wear this? Do you think I’m a prostitute?’ glares. I think the day will go off swimmingly, particularly after sixteen rum balls. I can’t wait.

Marina Goes Platinum Scholarship Pool Port Stephens’ Soldiers Point Marina Ranked Best in the World

IT’S Official - Soldiers Point Marina is one of the best in the world.

The Marina has been awarded the coveted Platinum Anchor accreditation under the Global Gold Anchor Scheme.

Platinum status is the highest possible level of the Anchor accreditations, with only seven Marinas in the world accredited to this level.

The Award was acknowledged at a ceremony on the Marina attended by Mayor Ryan Palmer.

The Marina is committed to offering service of the highest standard and a memorable boating experience.

Darrell Barnett General Manager of Soldiers Point Marina told News Of The Area, “We take pride in our ‘can-do’ attitude and for our experienced and knowledgeable staff, nothing

is too much trouble.”

Only marinas that achieve an extremely high assessment score in all categories from infrastructure and facilities through to customer service are then recommended by the Gold Anchor Standards “It is truly an honour to be internationally recognised alongside some of the best marinas in the world.

“We are very proud of this achievement; however, this accreditation keeps us on our toes striving harder to maintain our excellent reputation and exceed our customer expectations at all times,” he said.

$32,000 in financial support up for grabs for Port Stephens students

PORT Stephens students have an opportunity to receive $2,000 to help pay for their studies with the Port Stephens Mayoral Academic Scholarships opening today.

Thirteen businesses have generously contributed $32,000 collectively to the scholarship pool. Valued at $2,000 each, the scholarships provide financial support to residents from the Port Stephens local government area who are starting university or TAFE in 2019.

Will is a dedicated swimmer who is steadily improving and is attempting races across all his strokes. Our newest swimmers to compete were the Slater siblings, Jack (9) , Matthew (8) and Ella (11) from Medowie. Jade Smith (13) from Clarence Town again had a good solid carnival and achieved a significant PB of 1.44 seconds in her 100m freestyle.

The Slater family attended their first carnival and were able to record official times and even won medals.

Much thanks to all the parents who assisted with timekeeping - Warren, Claire, Slater family and Gray family.

Coach Michael Abel believes the new swimmers are progressing well and will soon be able to compete at qualifying carnivals and the Country Regional Carnival to be held at Armidale.

Swimmers take Medals

ON Sunday 9 December a team of 12 swimmers from Stroud Seals attended the Development Carnival at Beresfield and won a total of 3 gold medals, 6 silver medals and 7 bronze medals.

Medowie and Raymond Terrace swimmers featured prominently in the medal grab.

Medowie Swimmer Hosanna Gray (12) took gold in the 100 freestyle and the 50 freestyle. Silver medals were awarded to Hosanna Gray in the 50m backstroke, Ella Slater (11) from Medowie in the 50m freestyle and Raymond Terrace swimmer Caleb Whitter (11) in the 50m Breastroke.

Clarence Town sisters Georgia (8) and Caitlin McDonald (9) competed for the first time at Beresfield with Caitlin winning gold in the 50m breaststroke and silver in the 50 freestyle and the 50m butterfly. Sister Georgia claimed a silver in the 50m breastroke. Bronze medallions were awarded to Caitlin in the 50m backstroke and Georgia in the 50m freestyle.

The purpose of the Development Carnival is to encourage new swimmers to learn how to race and to experience competition rules in a relaxed environment. A number of new swimmers who had not raced attended to obtain their first qualifying time.

Other swimmers attended to improve existing times and obtain a Personal Best (PB) while striving to reach regional qualifying time.

Will Bradshaw (11) from Raymond Terrace was present at just his second carnival.
