Alesco College Wins Grant

ALSECO offers an alternative learning environment for some students who have found the mainstream schools unable to meet their needs.

The Alesco College at Nelson Bay is hosted by the PCYC and has 27 students participating in years nine and ten.

The local Westpac branch has pitched in to help the Alesco Senior College in Nelson Bay, so they can continue the great work they are doing in our area.

Jason Russell, manager of the Nelson Bay Westpac Branch told News Of The Area, “Personally I think they deserve broader recognition and awareness of the service they are providing to our community.”

The Alesco Senior College specifically targets those young people who are unlikely to find success in a traditional school environment.

SeaFaring Scenes at Arts Centre

School gains mores trees from Rotary

WHEN you are an artist living in the Bay it makes sense that at least some of your works will have a maritime theme.

At Port Stephens Community Arts Centre artist have been working on works that depict all things maritime, seafaring and their related industries.

The resulting body of work features beautiful ships, boats and seascapes.

Meryl Miller of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre told News Of The Area, “The Annex features “Nature of the Bay” where each work captures the character of local eye-catching scenes, the freshness and freedom that wildlife enjoys in its natural environment and we invite the whole community to join us for a nautical experience.”

Cory Acorn is one of the contributing artists and the Exhibition showcases her interpretation of Marine & Industrial Art. Cory has loved living in Nelson Bay for the past seven years, leaving Canada for our beautiful Bay and she has been a contributing member at the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre since 2014.

ROTARY International has challenged every local Rotary club worldwide to make a difference by planting a tree for each of its members.

Rotary Salamander Bay had been made aware that Soldiers Point Public School had lost many trees due to storms and tree risk/safety assessments over the years, the result being that many of koala feeding trees were gone.

They saw this challenge as a great opportunity to arrange the planting of koala friendly trees at the school and coincide it with ‘Schools Tree Day’, held on Friday 27 July.

With a generous donation of trees from Port Stephens Council, a group of children were assigned to their trees and they will now be responsible for watering them and watching them grow.

Soldiers Point Public School is known for sharing

The Art Prize competition is anticipated to feature hundreds of original paintings by local and Australian-wide artists. A Committee is in place to run the successful Art Prize and the team is working hard to secure sponsorship from supportive businesses.

their playground with the koalas. The children monitor their whereabouts, helping to keep track on numbers. Port Stephens Koalas also appreciate being able to release their koalas from care into their safe playground.

With such a huge

decline of koalas in the area, they hope to encourage more back to where they don’t have to worry about losing their homes or avoiding the neighbourhood dogs.

We need to ensure that future generations will get to have recess and lunch with the koalas too.

Motorama sprinkles Horizons $15K of funds Results

AT the annual Presentation Dinner recently, Tilligerry Motorama once again waved its magic wand and some $15,000 of fairy dust was sprinkled amongst deserving community groups.

The John Hunter Children’s Hospital was the major beneficiary with a cheque for $7,500 being handed over to Dr Kristy McCarthy and Carol Doherty.

Total donations over the years to the hospital are now nearing the $150,000 mark.

On top of this generous donation, local junior Sports Clubs each received $1500 to assist with the purchase of equipment.

Gifts from the Heart HUNTER River High School (HRHS) students have been participating in a unique collection of goods, destined for a special school in the Kingdom of Tonga.

Sione Finefeuiaki, a retired Knights and NRL player, has been working with the HRHS students to collect items to assist him in an organisation he has founded.

Sione’s Academy & Pathways is a not for profit registered organisation, where volunteers travel to the Kingdom of Tonga each October to work with the schools and villages.

HRHS joined forces with Sione and this week packed a truck full of their collected goods.

The Academy’s mission is to give the people of Tonga an opportunity to excel in sport and to assist with their wellbeing.

A trip in October 2018 will focus on Rugby League, Rugby Union, Netball, Soccer and Athletics.

They will run coaching clinics in all the schools and villages and the schools have also requested that they ‘teach the teacher’, so that the great work can continue after this visit.

Sione will have 54 volunteers travelling with him this October, some of whom are tradesmen, doctors, nurses, teachers, coaches and everyday people just willing to come with him and make a difference.

While the sports coaching is taking place, his tradesmen will work on fixing the classrooms in Kolonga Public School.

This school is in need of urgent repair.

There are holes in the roof, no glass in the windows, walls are either mouldy or falling in and the watering system is poor. Children sit on the floor with no desks or chairs.

With this in mind, Sione’s Academy has been seeking assistance by way of donations to help rebuild this school.

Each year his Academy take gifts to give to the schools and villages.

These consist of sporting uniforms, books, computers, clothes, shoes, toys, toothpaste, old computers, whiteboards and basically anything you can think of.

HRHS set a goal to give to each of the 150 students of Kolonga Public School (Sione’s own Primary school), a bag containing everything they would

need for returning to school.

Each bag consisted of writing books, a pencil case, coloured pens, lead pencils, an eraser, a pencil sharpener, glue, highlighters, a ruler, a calculator, coloured pencils and texters, a water bottle, a reading book, a colouring book or puzzle book, a reading book, a handball and a little

THIS week’s Positive Behaviour for Learning winners were presented with their Awards by Inga Kasch from the Lions Club of Raymond Terrace.

Inga holds the position of Youth Chair within the Lions Club, and is also heavily involved in other lions programs involving youth - including Youth Exchange, Junior Public Speaking and Youth of the Year.

The winners awarded this week were; Nicholas Williams from Irrawang

Public School, who at Saturday sport cleaned up the soccer fields that were not being used, assisted with packing away soccer equipment and generally tidied up, all without being asked.

Nicholas showed great pride in assisting his soccer club.

Isis Sheedy from Grahamstown Public School, for her outstanding sportsmanship at a PSSA knockout competition match.

Isis was positive and encouraging towards both teams.

Caitlin Anderson from Hunter River High School, for her

considerate and helpful manner, helping a teacher to find her lost keys and then offering to organise her a lift home if she wasn’t able to find them.

Amelia Sloane from Medowie Public School, for picking up a lot of cardboard that had been blown all over the road without being asked.

Isaac Bills from Karuah Public School, for outstanding behaviour at the Sports Carnival.

Isaac was always offering assistance and was very helpful at setting up and packing up on the day.

and effort in the school choir, extending to Daniel becoming a shining star for the onstage choir at Starstruck.

Premier Rugby raises funds

IT is not often that game day at Boyd Oval, Medowie is about a lot more than the action on the field but this was the case when the Medowie and Districts Rugby Union Club held their annual Charity Match.

With four games on the program, the footy purists would be kept happy, but the day was all about raising much needed funds for the Medowie Foodware Program as well as the current Bale Out The Drought fundraiser.

The Medowie Foodware Program, run by the Medowie congregation of the Assembly of God Church, assists over 1200 families in Port Stephens with donations, including long life food, bread, fruit, vegetables, emergency parcels and hot meals.

As always, any charitable event requires help from the general public, as well as a more than helpful hand from sponsorship.

The major sponsor for the day was Glen Towers Off Road Racing, who not only had some of their offroad racers available for the crowd to inspect and have photos next to, but also sponsored the special jerseys worn on the day.

Fullers Racing who provided speedway cars, Medowie Social Riders who conducted the raffles throughout the day, Medowie Tyre and Auto, Port Stephens Toyota and the Nelson Bay Rugby Club.

The results on the field were a little disappointing for Medowie, with the visiting Merewether

q There was something for everyone at the annual charity match day at Boyd Oval, from Off Road Racers to jumping castles for the kids, and all in the name of two great charities.

Carlton Rugby Club taking most of the honours, but the winners on the day were definitely the two charities.

On a successful day of fundraising, the mighty Medowie Marauders raised a very impressive $2800 for the Medowie Foodware Program and $500 for the Medowie Bale Out The Drought campaign.

Well done to all involved.

Is Marketing Essential?

The old saying “you can’t sell a secret” is so true today.

With competition hotter than ever you need your property to stand out from the crowd.

That’s one of the reasons why I always recommend professional photography to my home sellers.

It is a fact that today the biggest source of real estate enquiry comes from the internet.

Buyers are mainly on their electronic devices, usually an iphone or ipad, scrolling through thousands of thumbnail sized pictures of properties.

Unless your home’s photograph catches their eye they will possibly scroll straight past it and onto someone else’s property.

When choosing an agent you need to have an in depth conversation with each of them about what their marketing strategy is.

Ask them who they believe the target audience is for your style of property, what areas do these buyers come from and how will the agent attract these buyers to your property.

These are all essential questions.

Real estate marketing is certainly worth the investment in time, energy and money. Chat to your agent about what they offer and what you can afford to invest in.

SPORT IT was a disappointing day for Nelson Bay at Singleton on Saturday with both men’s sides struggling to field sides and the women suffering their second consecutive loss.

In the Black Diamond Cup, Nelson Bay was no match for semi-final bound Singleton going down 22.16.148 to 4.2.26.

The Nelson Bay team’s effort at Rose Point Park on Saturday could not be questioned.

Is it okay to put on a bit of weight over winter? I’m sure I’ll lose it again in spring.

Dear Mr AB, What are you talking about when you say ‘a bit’ of weight? Do you mean that your jeans are tight, or do you have to get dressed horizontally so you can squeeze into your tracky-dacks? There’s a world of difference between these two stages and only you will know how far you’ve let yourself go.

There are a few positives to your dilemma, so I’m going to try to make you feel a bit better. Firstly, you are not alone. Most people put on weight over winter, unless they are those annoying types who jog roadside and wave when you’re on your way to the shop to buy a family block of chocolate. If you like to feel part of the community, it is probably a good idea to commiserate with fellow weight gainers, rather than join that patronising group of body mass index sustainers. Killjoys, the lot of them.

Secondly, your weight gain goes back to times of food scarcity when long winters meant a store of fat came in quite handy.

Think of gophers. Now there’s an animal that knows a thing or two about storing weight over winter. Who could argue with a gopher? They are adorable. They must be doing something right, because they are under no threat of extinction, apart from a couple of obscure gophers like the big pocket gopher who must store contraband items in his big pockets that he goes and snorts in dodgy places with his fellow big pocket gopher mates to keep his weight down (I digress, Mr AB).

Finally, in the cold winter months, it is quite nice to cuddle up to someone who is carrying an extra kilo or two. I mean, at this time of year would you rather be snuggling up to washboard abs and protruding hip bones or a stomach as soft as a feather and down pillow?

I hope this eases your mind.

Ethan Smith of Surfing NSW told News Of The Area, “Mike is fast becoming a major threat on the Australian Junior circuit, whether it be State or National Titles or in the Pro Junior events.

“Over the duration of the NSW Junior Titles, he showed extraordinary heat nous and strategy to claim the win,” he said.

The success of the Clayton-Brown siblings follows that of Josh Stretton winning his category at the NSW Junior Men’s NSW SUP and taking out second place in the 10 foot men’s surfing division which was held at One Mile Beach in June.
