THE Raymond Terrace VIEW Club are a special collection of women making an impact in our community.

Chances are you may not have heard of them, so you are invited to come along to a meeting and see what they are all about.

VIEW stands for ‘Voices, Interes and Education of Women’ and is a much valued part of The Smith Family.

The emphasis for the VIEW Club is on friendship and fun, and they are looking for new members to welcome into their group.

They hold monthly meetings on the first Friday of the month at Muree Golf Club, with an 11.00am for 11.30am start.

Their calendar year includes a variety of events and special celebrations.

At each monthly meeting and at functions, interesting

They also organise regular raffles supporting their four “Learning for Life” students that the club contributes to assist.

The Club also hold an Autumn and Spring Fashion Parade each year, and various other functions with funds raised going towards the four students.

The ‘Learning for Life’ program is a Smith Family initiative that provide educational support for disadvantaged Australian families.

Stationery supplies are also collected for use by the local schools for these students.

All proceeds from Raymond Terrace VIEW Club events go towards supporting these students in their educational endeavours.

Membership cost is $20 per calendar year and an initial $20 joining fee which includes the cost of your membership badge of this special group of ladies.

Shine for Emma a wonderful success

By Rachael VAUGHAN THE Raymond Terrace Community came together last weekend to take care of one of their own.

The ‘Shine for Emma’ event at the Clare Castle Hotel in Raymond Terrace was a resounding success.

Despite the sweltering temperatures, the venue was packed with more than 200 people who came to support Emma.

Emma has been personally fighting Melanoma for the past 3 years and it progressed sadly into stage four around 18 months ago.

A fabulous afternoon filled with raffles, auctions and entertainment was held, with a whopping $35,500 raised.

Organisers were so overwhelmed by everyone’s raffles purchases that a search had to be undertaken mid celebration to find a bigger barrel to hold the tickets to draw from.

The community of Raymond Terrace truly showed their heart by standing together to support this local family.

Runners off to Japan FOUR Port Stephens women are about to embark on the trip of a lifetime, as they head to Tateyama, Japan to compete in the Wakashio marathon on Sunday 28 January 2018.

Committee Chairman Nigel Dique says the runners will be put up in homestay accommodation and will have the opportunity to experience the Japanese way of life.

“Our local runners will be participating in the Wakashio Marathon, an annual event attracting more than 9,000 participants from around the world,” Mr Dique said.

“This really is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see another country, experience another culture and test yourself both physically and mentally with the challenge of a marathon.”

Mayor of Port Stephens Ryan Palmer says the exchange is an important part of Port Stephens’ relationship with Tateyama.

“Tateyama has been the sister city of Port Stephens since 2009 and the marathon exchange is an important part of our long-standing friendship, with participants from Port Stephens

invited to send runners each year,” Mayor Palmer said.

“But this is much more than a competition. It’s a cultural exchange, and an opportunity for our local participants to form lifelong friendships and memories.

“These four local runners are wonderful ambassadors for Port Stephens, and I have no doubt that they will do our region very proud in Tateyama,” he said.

Mayor Palmer says the Sister Cities Committee is invaluable to this exchange program.

“It’s a credit to the Port Stephens Sister Cities Committee that we have such strong ties with Tateyama, as it has worked tirelessly to maintain connections with our sister cities,” he said.

“I’m proud that Council has been able to make a contribution to our representatives and I’m really looking forward to hearing about their trip when they return,” he added.

Council and the Port Stephens Sister Cities Committee provided each participant with $300 to help cover airfares, passport costs, meals and other travel costs.

“I got to learn some new skills and do some fun drills with

my friends, but by the end I was exhausted!”

Another participant, Sophie Cieplechowicz, also got a lot out of the session.

“The coaches were lovely,” Sophie told News of the Area. “It was a great start to get ready for the season ahead and even though it was hot, it was fun.”

Nettyheads Clinic

WITH Port Stephens Netball Association opening their registrations for the upcoming season in the next couple of weeks, the time was ripe for local netball coaching duo ‘Nettyheads’ to hold a coaching clinic on the Raymond Terrace courts last Saturday.

Twenty young netballers, between the ages of 10 and 12, took the opportunity to further develop their skills in the game of netball with two of the best coaches in the land.

Nettyheads, created by former Hunter Jaegers and Sydney Swifts goal attack Tiffany Gilmour and NSW Institute of Sport junior Nat Hilder, put the group through their paces for three hours on what turned out to be a hot summer’s day, but the effort was no doubt worth it.

Despite the warm weather, the players were focussed and engaged in all of the drills that Gilmour and Hilder put them

through, an experience that will hopefully assist them when competition starts in the coming months and possibly beyond.

“We want to bring all those skills and what we’ve learned in our careers to netball courts across the Hunter,” Nat Hilder told News of the Area.

Women’s Rugby for Port Stephens

WOMEN’S Rugby 7’s is coming to the Port Stephens.

Hunter Women’s Rugby Union in collaboration with Hunter Junior Rugby Union to give girls in the Under 15 and Under 17 age groups a dedicated first time club based sevens competition in Term 1 of 2018.

Will Scully who is organising the competition told News Of The Area, “The competition is endorsed and supported by the Hawthorne Club, who provide philanthropic support for various rugby campaigns in the Hunter, and NSW Rugby Union.”

It is planned that the competition will run over 6 weeks, with a group training round, 4 series rounds and a finals day hosted at grounds across the region on a Friday Night from 9 February.

Eight clubs have shown strong interest in participating in the competition including Nelson Bay in both age groups, Hamilton, Easts, Maitland, Merewether Carlton, Lake Macquarie, The Wanderers and Southern Beaches.

Terrace Potential

Gloucester Rugby Union have shown a willingness to travel the 2 hours each week to play as well.

Host grounds for the competition includes the Tomaree Sports Facility.

“The competition will allow girls to further their rugby union careers beyond club levels if they so choose, with representative pathways in sevens and fifteens for Hunter, NSW Country and NSW 7’s open to anyone who plays.”

While the competition can be used as a step up the ladder for those seeking to further their rugby union careers, it is also for anyone who simply wants to have some fun with their friends as well.

The competition demonstrates the continued commitment of Hunter Women’s to the sevens game, where we have had multiple players play for NSW or enter Australian development deals since 2012.

The competition will be managed by Will Scully and Kate Gilbert, who is a current player and coach with some assistance from NSW Rugby.

Pink Stumps Day

RAYMOND Terrace District Cricket Club (RTDCC) will again host a Pink Stumps Day this year, but they do it with a twist that is not seen at other

clubs.

On Saturday 3 March RTDCC will host their sixth annual Pink Stumps Pamper day to support the Jane McGrath foundation.

The McGrath Foundation

was founded by Australian cricketing legend Glenn McGrath and his late wife Jane after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Jane unfortunately lost her fight with dreaded

disease in 2008, however the foundation has helped many affected by breast cancer in the years since.

The foundation has been instrumental in increasing breast health awareness, but

also in building a network of McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities across Australia through fundraisers such as “Pink Stumps Day” and the “Pink Test held at the Sydney Cricket Ground each year.

The unique RTDCC Pink Stumps event will see over 120 women fill the King Park function centre to be pampered, enjoy an amazing High Tea and be treated to an afternoon of fun and festivities.

One of the event organisers, Carolyn Lilley, told News Of The Area, “Guests will be greeted with a glass of champagne to start their day of feeling important and treasured.”

“This years theme looks at cancer risk and the importance of keeping our own well being and health in check.”

Guest speaker for the day is local Dietitian Rebecca Muddle discussing Women’s Health and the importance of healthy eating.

Carolyn said, “The ladies will be able to visit certain demonstrations/stalls on the day, be presented with a fashion parade, and at the end of the day we will draw our major raffle.”

“All prizes for the day are donated by local businesses which is really appreciated.”

“We also have a Tombola which is an enormous success,” she said.

The group organisers are this year on the lookout for some prizes valued at $20.00 or more to put together a brand new game this year, their ‘Pick -A -Box’.

Carolyn added, “The afternoon is filled with fun, games, laughter and the feeling of all our sisters coming together to value ourselves and our families.”

“In saying that there is some families have 3 generations attend which is brilliant in supporting this very important foundation.”
